Our readers do not recommend: 6 products from Ikea that you should not buy

SCHOTTIS blinds

IKEA SHOTTIS blinds, 599 RUR, Ikea

Another, but failed, attempt by Ikea to produce a product accessible to everyone. The idea is good - light curtains that perfectly dim the light when you just need to make it not so bright. But no one has yet managed to break the laws of gravity. After a few months, the SHOTTIS smooth out and turn into a smooth sheet of paper. So it's better not to experiment. Moreover, Ikea has excellent analogues. For example, the Roman blind RINGBLUMMA.

Shottis paper blinds from Ikea will stylishly replace newspapers and sheets on the windows.

No wonder they say that there is nothing more permanent than temporary! Self-adhesive paper blinds are a good option for temporarily covering windows during renovation, construction, or simply until full curtains or blinds are purchased. Shottis blinds from Ikea are also a good budget way to protect a room from the hot rays of the sun and prying eyes. They are inexpensive and look much better than newspapers and sheets on the windows.

I first saw them on my sister’s windows - very neatly, and most importantly, they actually protect from the sun and views from the neighboring house opposite. I decided to order one for myself too. Our house is located in the letter L and when the neighbors go out onto the balcony, they can watch everything that happens in our kitchen. And opposite the bedroom windows there is also a high-rise building. There I have transparent Japanese panels, and the fabric curtain only covers half the window, or rather, it only falls on the window, then it rests on the crossbar on the curtain. The width of the pleated Schottis is 90 cm, so one set is enough for one sash.

For the kitchen, I cut one paper curtain for the window and balcony door. We ended up with small gaps, although ideally we should have bought two sets here and cut them exactly to the width of the glass. And all the same, I’m happy with the result; now, when the sun shines all day, the thick pleated fabric does not let the rays through. And I don’t see the unpleasant gaze of my smoking neighbor either. All that remains is to decorate the kitchen window with any tulle.

Regarding installation. Everything is simple here, you need to wipe the frame, I also degreased it with vodka. Then, while it dries, we measure out the pleated fabric, mark the excess with a simple pencil along the ruler and cut it off with good scissors or a stationery knife. Then we glue the curtain to the frame using Velcro. I have a plastic one, but you can also glue it to a wooden surface. Also included are Velcro with double-sided tape. We cut them into three parts and fasten two - at the edges and one - in the center on the lower frame. Also, the Velcro halves need to be glued to the lower end of the curtain. That's it for installing Schottis blinds from Ikea.

The composition of the fabric is polymer, similar to the masks that we buy at the pharmacy when we have a cold, only thicker. They are not washable, so you can only remove dust with a slightly damp cloth. They also recommend cleaning with a vacuum cleaner, I haven’t tried it.

I didn’t like the plastic clips that, when you want to put an accordion on top of the curtain, constantly fly off. I replaced them with large paper clips. Also, after using it for two weeks, I noticed that the pleated pleats are smoothing out and are not as elastic as when they are new. In general, my accordions sagged a little. That is, in the upper part of the window the pleated looks more straightened, and in the lower part there are more gathers. At the beginning of operation, the canvas on the window had to be stretched to the bottom, like a spring. The photo shows the curtains on the first day of installation and on the last - already stretched.

Conclusion: As a temporary option, you can use Schottis paper blinds from Ikea. Cheap and cheerful, as they say.

PS I hope that the glue from the Velcro will come off easily when I want to remove these accordions or replace them in the new season.

MICKE desk

MIKKE desk, RUB 6,499, Ikea

MICKE's Scandinavian white desk looks charming: it's comfortable for a student and suitable for a study. But this is at first glance. In fact, it turns out that it is very short-lived: with intensive use it becomes covered with dirty chips and scratches, and from the first contact with water it swells.

It is much better to choose a table with a wooden top. For example, such as FJELLBO - durable and in fashion trends of recent years.

The main advantages of roller blinds

Ikea is a huge chain hypermarket that has several furniture departments. There you can buy not only furniture, but also branded ikea curtains. For example, many Ikea fans choose wooden horizontal blinds. The so-called Roman blinds and one of their varieties are roller blinds. Roller blinds and roller shutters look fashionable, beautiful, modern.

Before you make your final choice, you need to clearly know what roller blinds are. In fact, this option for sun protection has been known since antiquity. Archaeologists claim that such curtains often hung in the rich houses of the ancient Romans. This is a rectangular piece of material, mounted on a vertical support and equipped with a drawstring with a cord. When you pull the cord, the curtain gradually rolls up into a neat roll (hence the name of such curtains) and rises, leaving the window open. Similarly, you can lower the curtain over the window when daylight is not needed (for example, while sleeping).

Hanger KOMPLEMENT

Multifunctional hanger KOMPLEMENT, 329 RUR, Ikea

The Swedish store is far from a champion in producing useless goods, but the KOMPLEMENT hanger takes a worthy place in this ranking. Designed as a multi-functional accessory storage solution. Everything looks wonderful in Ikea's perfect pictures.

What's the reality? The white fabric surface of the hanger quickly gets dirty and cannot be cleaned. And most importantly: hanging scarves, belts and tights look very careless. So let's go back to the classics! Since Ikea is famous for its excellent storage modules, SKUBB boxes will save us.

How to choose quality blinds

In order to purchase truly high-quality products, it is recommended that you first study the Ikea product catalog presented on the Internet. During a personal visit to a store, you can ask the administrator for a classic paper catalog. If the buyer is clearly interested, a store employee may even give such a catalog to his home for free. It contains detailed information on each model, namely:

  • Photo;
  • Maximum length and width;
  • Minimum length and width (these dimensions may vary depending on the individual characteristics of the windows in the customer’s home);
  • Purchase price including home delivery and installation.

Decanter with stopper 365+

Decanter IKEA 365+, 229 RUR, Ikea

Our favorite section is dishes. The laconic and sleek carafe for water and drinks 365+ is designed to delight us both in summer and winter. Lemonades and compotes look perfect in it. Everything would be fine if it weren’t for the traffic jam! This traitor absorbs everything she touches, and not only: some readers write that even smells remain in her forever! So, you bought 365+ - use it for bulk products, but for liquids it is better to change the lid. Or buy SELSCAPLIG or VARDAGEN decanters right away.

But where IKEA is definitely ahead of everyone is in its love for home warmth and comfort. So if you've decided to update your kitchen, check out these 6 cool products from Ikea.

Mounting features

Shottis, like other Ikea products, requires self-assembly. Usually buyers do not have any difficulties with installation. The design of the blinds is very simple: the set consists of an accordion-style canvas, on the top of which there is an adhesive layer for fastening, Velcro to fix the lower part in full deployment and a clip to adjust the degree of window opening.

Before installation, you should wipe the surface of the frame from dust and other contaminants and let it dry. Schottis blinds can be attached to both plastic and wood. If necessary, you can adjust the size by cutting off the excess with ordinary scissors. Next, remove the protective film and attach the sticky edge to the surface. The kit also includes three pairs of Velcro that block the folding; they need to be glued along the edges and in the middle of the lower part of the canvas, and the second pair at the bottom of the window frame, respectively. They help keep the accordion unfolded. You can clearly see the installation process in the video.

Summer is ending, and I’m just ready to write a review about blinds from the IKEA store. )) But, better late than never..

From the manufacturer:

Easy to install on the window, no drilling required. Can be easily cut to required size.

And now I would like to talk in more detail about the installation process.

    We carefully read the instructions, or rather look at the pictures, IKEA is laconic.)

No BEFORE and AFTER photos , where would we be without them..)

The material of the blinds is 100% polyester.

  • Easy to install.
  • They block the light perfectly (I have my blinds installed on the sunny side).
  • They don't turn yellow.

Before purchasing, I read a couple of negative reviews here. I took the risk of buying at my own risk and did not regret it. What more could you want for this price? For me, they are ideal as a budget option!

Glad to be useful to you. Always yours Nyushka.

Popular colors and sizes of Schottis blinds

When you don’t have enough money to buy curtains, and you need to cover the window with something, good old newspapers or a sheet immediately come to mind. But the aesthetic appearance of such “curtains” leaves much to be desired and spoils the overall impression of the brand new renovation and furniture.

The ideal way out of this situation would be to buy SchottisIkea blinds. This is an example of temporary pleated window curtains that are very easy to install and cost much less than full blinds. And their appearance is quite pleasant and neat. The photo shows examples of placement on the window and on the balcony.

Features of blinds

The use of blinds in the interior is applicable quite often. If previously they could be seen mainly in offices, now the variety of types of blinds allows you to choose exactly the type that suits the desired style.

Blinds prevent bright light from entering, protect from harmful ultraviolet radiation, block the visibility of rooms from the street, and also do not cover the window sill, which makes access to it free.

There are horizontal, vertical, roller, pleated and Roman blinds made of various materials. But the most practical and easy to use are the pleated paper ones, which are attached without drilling walls, additional screws and fasteners. It is a fabric or paper sheet assembled into an accordion; it can be used for inclined windows.

Such blinds can be purchased at the Ikea store or ordered through the company’s official website.
