Windows that will save you from the heat: what you need to know about sun protection

Having decided once and for a long time to rid your apartment of the scorching sun, heat, and glare of the sun, you can do this:

order plastic windows with sun protection, install them and enjoy comfort;

Simply apply a special film with sun protection coating to existing windows and get rid of not only the heat, stuffiness, but also views from the street.

Please note right away that the first option will require considerable material costs and all the difficulties associated with choosing a company, ordering and replacing windows. The second option is budget-friendly, but durable enough, so you don’t have to replace the windows. The process of gluing a special film takes only a couple of hours!

But let's look at these options in more detail and find out other advantages and features.

Solar control plastic windows. What is it and what are they?

These are modern window designs that limit the entry of ultraviolet radiation into the room. It is recommended to install solar control windows on the south side, and also to glaze greenhouses and verandas with them.

Sun protection and ultraviolet reflection are made possible thanks to titanium and chromium oxide. This composition is used to coat window glass in double-glazed units. It also prevents heating and slightly absorbs radiation.

Another way of spraying windows against the sun is to use 4 layers of metal and silver oxides, which effectively reflect ultraviolet radiation, but at the same time transmit harmless scattered light.

It is also possible to tint double-glazed windows, when a sun protection film is applied to the glass directly at production. And finally, a combined method based on pyrolytic or magetron technology. Such windows are low-mirror, they transmit light well, protect from ultraviolet radiation and retain heat.

Full blackout options

With the help of certain types of curtains you can provide reliable protection from the annoying sun.

In addition, there are many other ways to get rid of excessive light intake. Before choosing one of them, you should carefully study, selecting the optimal protection option. This will allow you to avoid possible mistakes and unjustified expenses for inadequate protection.

Option 1. Hanging curtains

Traditional ways to get rid of the sun include hanging blackout curtains . This method will not require significant expenses, and organizing its use will be simple. Almost any homeowner can afford such a darkening option.

Following the recommendations of experts, the use of thick curtain fabric will bring maximum effect from the heat and sun:

  1. The color of the curtains should be light - this will reduce the degree of heating of the room and limit the passage of solar heat inside.
  2. Blackout curtains will provide maximum protection . The specificity of the three-layer fabric will not allow light to pass through, allowing you to darken the room as much as possible and effectively reflect sunlight.

If you hang blackout curtains, homeowners provide themselves with the most reliable protection from letting excess light into the apartment.

  1. You can do without heavy curtains and at the same time get an excellent darkening effect if you use a combination of several protection options: combining curtains of different densities, structures, and designs will create an interesting interior decor option and provide the required protection from excess light.

Heavy curtains are used with caution in home interiors, as they have many disadvantages:

  • The passage of fresh air is seriously limited, which reduces the degree of ventilation of the room.
  • Heavy curtains are a good reservoir for dust, which reduces the quality of indoor air and also forces you to resort to frequent, tedious washing.

At the same time, the presence of thick curtains eliminates the need to seal windows.

Option 2. Blinds

The leader among all existing ways to limit the passage of light are curtains made of lamellas (blinds) . This option has gained great popularity in the design of modern housing, as well as administrative and public premises. Window openings with them look impressive, respectable, and stylish. Blinds can be installed both from the outside and from the inside. Depending on the needs of customers and the specific situation. The issue of choice is decided taking into account several indicators.

Internal installation option

It’s no wonder that most property owners love to take advantage of the benefits of blinds. Lamella curtains owe their popularity to many reasons.

The first idea that comes to mind when thinking about options for protecting balconies and loggias is the production of stylish and practical blinds. However, for housing this method is also no less effective. The slats will provide reliable protection from light and allow you to stylishly design openings in rooms.

The advantages of this method include:

  1. The ability to easily adjust the incoming light flow. The rotation function will allow you to dose the incoming light and heat.
  2. Easy fixation in the window opening allows you to quickly solve the problem of excessive light in the room.
  3. There are so many different model options that choosing a design that fits organically into the interior will not be difficult.
  4. Blinds can be easily combined with the traditional form of curtains, expanding design possibilities.

Blinds have no equal when it comes to protecting your interior space from prying eyes!

The disadvantages include minor difficulties in maintaining and cleaning the blinds. A large number of slats that will have to be wiped with a damp cloth will hardly allow the cleaning process to be called easy and unburdensome.

Outdoor option

Things are a little different with the manufacture of blinds intended for installation outside. Firstly, the requirements for the material used are different - a material of increased strength is needed. Secondly, the design contains wider slats. Otherwise, outdoor systems have a lot of advantages, among which paramount is protection from prying eyes and an effective means of controlling the amount of incoming sunlight or artificial street lighting. The topic of such protection is especially close to residents of the first floors.

Even the brightest sun on the hottest day will not enter the room, providing comfort to the eyes and improving the well-being of those inside.

In the production of blinds, the most common material is metal, in some cases wood is used. Adverse environmental influences (rain, dust, snow, bright light) contribute to the rapid loss of the original appearance and damage the structure.

Option 3. Roller blinds

Rolled structures for protection from light are no less popular among homeowners, and for good reason. They are convenient, practical, economical. Studying the advantages and disadvantages of these curtains will help you understand whether these devices are suitable for protection.

How to choose and how much does it cost?

If you decide to replace old windows with new, solar-protective ones, keep in mind right away that it’s not cheap! The price for such window designs is always higher than for conventional double-glazed windows. Moreover, the cost will depend on several factors:

type of glass : what will be the degree of ray transmission, level of thermal protection, presence of tempering, thickness, degree of color distortion. All this affects not only light transmission and protection from the sun and heat, but also the price of the window.

square footage of the room;

manufacturer.

There is no point in saving money by ordering such windows. After all, if you choose a cheap product, then there is a high probability of poor quality coating and lack of declared properties.

Curtains

Modern curtains, allowing you to escape from the scorching rays of the Sun, can be classified into classic ones - sewn from various fabrics and completely or partially blocking the light coming through the windows, and louvered type curtains: “Roman”, “Japanese”, “day-night”, the operating principle of which is based on the use of materials of different densities and light transmission, or on the ability to adjust the width of open sections of the window by dosing the flow of sunlight into the room.

A smart alternative: solar control films for windows

If you are not ready to install solar control glass for windows yet, pay attention to special window films that:

reflect 50-80% of solar energy;

eliminate stuffiness and heating of the apartment;

reflect infrared radiation by 60%, preventing eye diseases;

block harmful ultraviolet radiation;

preserve the original color of wallpaper, carpets, and furniture.

These films are easily applied to the glass of any windows (plastic, wooden), to window structures of balconies, verandas of various sizes, to shop windows, glass doors.

Awnings

A canopy or awning stretched over a frame made of metal or wood can be in the shape of a wing, sail, semicircle, umbrella, etc. There are a lot of options. The market offers a lot of ready-made structures for balconies, terraces and pergolas. The sun protection fabric is most often simple canvas, but there are more durable options made from rubberized and synthetic fabrics.

Large area awnings can be equipped with a control system (manual or electric), which allows you to remotely roll up and unfold the canvas. Moreover, “smart” automation can do this independently, depending on weather conditions.

Blinds

Modern blinds are one of the most effective ways to protect a room from excess sunlight during the summer months. Compared to other devices, they have a number of undeniable advantages:

  • simplicity and reliability of design;
  • a variety of colors, allowing them to successfully fit into the interior of the room;
  • ease of care and maintenance;
  • long service life;
  • a variety of engineering solutions that allow installation of a wide variety of designs on windows;
  • low cost.

In order to install some models of blinds on windows, you don’t even need to drill holes. Installation using snaps and double-sided tape takes just a few minutes.

Roller blinds

The peculiarity of roller blinds is their convenience, practicality, and low price. Their use has the following positive aspects:

  • A large selection of similar products allows you to choose the best option that fits well into the interior;
  • By attaching the products directly to the glass unit, the curtains adhere to the window. This allows you to achieve maximum sun protection by eliminating the transmission of light rays from the sides;
  • High-quality structures, when installed correctly, completely prevent the entry of light rays. Thanks to this, the air in the room does not heat up on summer days;
  • Most roller blinds are treated with a dust-repellent solution that reduces contamination;
  • You can choose products that have an opaque, reflective, and light-diffusing effect.

Operating principle

When choosing regular windows, more attention is paid to the quality of the profile. In energy-saving windows, the main role is given to the double-glazed window.

First, let's look at the design of the “warm” camera:

  • A transparent coating with silver ions is applied to the inner glass. The coating is located inside the chamber, i.e. it “looks” onto the street. This is the main element of the energy window.
  • Dried air or inert gas - argon, krypton - is pumped into a sealed chamber. Inert gas increases thermal protection parameters by approximately 14%.
  • Granules that absorb moisture are also placed inside the chamber. They prevent the formation of condensation, which is harmful to silver plating.
  • The outer glass is standard.

The profile for framing a double-glazed window can be made of PVC, metal-plastic or wood. Polymers and treated wood provide good sealing and thermal insulation.

The operating principle of a single-chamber energy-saving double-glazed window: silver ions do not transmit infrared radiation and reflect long waves, including thermal ones. Thus, only visible (short) spectrum radiation passes through the metallized coating. And heat from the street and from heating devices is reflected back.

In essence, energy glass is a two-way mirror, and the entire glass unit is identical to a thermos. In the cold season, “indoor” glass is 5-7 °C warmer than “outdoor” glass.

The metallized layer can be applied using two technologies:

  • Hard – k-glass.
  • Soft – i-glass.

K-technology

K-glass (Low-E) is the first technology to apply a metallized coating to the surface of the glass itself. A layer of silver ions is applied chemically (pyrolysis) during the glass production process and becomes one with it.

Spray thickness ranges from 0.4 to 0.6 microns. This is 10 times thinner than a human hair. Such production is quite complex and expensive. But the coating cannot be damaged during transportation and installation. It is even suitable for single glazing.

I-technology

I-products (Double Low-E) eventually replaced K-products. A coating of metal oxides is applied to the finished glass in a vacuum environment.

The layer thickness is only 0.08 to 0.12 µm, which is significantly less than K-glass. The thermal insulation of such products is better, and the light transmittance is higher. But spraying is not resistant to mechanical and chemical influences. It requires a vacuum environment during transportation and storage. That’s why the I-glass is located inside the chamber so that it cannot be damaged, for example, when washing.

Inert gas

Dried air is a poor conductor of heat because it contains few water molecules, the main conductors of heat. But in inert gases they are completely absent. The thermal insulation of a double-glazed window is better if gas is pumped into the chamber.

  • Inert gases are absolutely safe for humans and the environment.
  • They do not enter into chemical reactions with other substances, are odorless and colorless.
  • In addition to low thermal conductivity, they also have better noise insulation.

If the seal of the glass unit is broken, the gas will escape.
