Tilt and turn mechanism: general information and recommendations

During operation, buyers often realize that the type of sash does not meet their needs: it is inconvenient to wash the window, it is impossible to ventilate the room. How to modernize installed windows to increase comfort and safety, in the material WINDOWS MEDIA.

Many owners of modern windows eventually realize that not all functions were originally included in the package. A large number of blind elements in the window, the absence of tilt-and-turn sashes, and micro-rotations are the reasons for discomfort when using new windows.

Photo: diagrams for opening a three-leaf window: top row - incorrectly (X), bottom row - correctly (V). Below: transcript of the image of various types of sashes. The top row of the photo shows incorrect versions of windows with blind elements. The bottom row contains convenient and safe types of window openings. Having lived with “wrong” windows, owners are increasingly asking the question: “How to convert them into opening ones?”

Blind sash - pros and cons

A blind sash is a non-opening element of a window or the entire window. In a blind window, the double-glazed window is inserted into the frame, and not into the sash. There are no fittings or sash in this window.

Advantages

The advantages of a blind sash are:

  • large area of the transparent part due to the absence of a fold - more light;
  • the lowest price, cheaper than installing a sash by an average of 2,200 rubles.

Flaws

1. Dangerous to the life and health of citizens when washing windows

Washing windows with fixed sashes can result in a person falling out into the street from a height, causing serious injury or even death. To clean a blind window, you need to lean out into the street through the open opening of the adjacent opening sash, holding onto the vertical impost (partition) of the window. On the smooth surface of a window sill or external ebb, you can easily slip and fall out.

In this regard, the requirement of GOST 23166-99 “Window blocks. General technical conditions”, clause 5.1.6, reads:

“The use of non-opening sashes in window blocks of premises of residential buildings above the first floor is not allowed, except for sashes with dimensions not exceeding 400x800 mm, as well as in products facing balconies (loggias) if such structures have devices for ventilation of the premises...”

2. Inability to ventilate the room

In most cases, standard ventilation in residential buildings in the Russian Federation is designed so that the influx of fresh outside air is carried out through the windows. To do this, the window must have opening sashes. With blind doors, ventilation of the room is impossible. During the hot season, such windows can cause discomfort to residents.

The device of the folding mechanism of plastic windows

This mechanism works on the rotary principle. Accordingly, it consists of the same parts. The only difference is that the canopies are not located vertically, but in a horizontal plane. This system provides only ventilation. It will not be possible to open the door completely. The advantage of the folding option for opening a plastic window is to protect the room from penetration from the street. It also allows you to save space, place the necessary decorative elements on the windowsill, and hang roller blinds. Such devices are safer for animals and small children. But caring for double-glazed windows will be more difficult. However, this option is often chosen. And often this is due to its reasonable cost. There are plastic windows with transoms. These are standard designs with a folding window located on top. They are rare. As a rule, large window openings are equipped with transoms.

Pivot sash - pros and cons

A rotary sash, or hinged sash (GOST terminology) is a sash that rotates around a vertical axis.

Advantages

The advantage of a pivoting sash over a fixed sash is the ability to open it, which means:

  • safety - you can wash such a sash easily and simply without risk to life;
  • the possibility of ventilating the room - to allow air to flow from outside, you can slightly open the swing door;
  • safe evacuation in case of fire.

Flaws

Photo: ventilating a room in winter using a swing flap leads to hypothermia in the room

  • it is impossible to fix the swing sash in the open position. To fix different degrees of opening on such a sash, you can install a “comb” - a step regulator for fixing the rotary sash;
  • not suitable for ventilation in the cold season - will lead to rapid hypothermia of the room;
  • ventilating the room during rain using a swing flap can lead to water flowing inside;
  • heavy loads on hinges and window profiles in the open position. The wider the sash, the greater the load. If the glass unit is unfastened with poor quality (wedging, adjustment) during window production, a swing sash that has been open for a long time may sag. As a result, the bottom of the sash clings to the frame and blows through. Correct fastening of the double-glazed window allows you to transfer the weight of the double-glazed window to the lower hinge, preventing the sash from sagging;
  • higher price compared to a blind sash, on average 2200 rubles higher.

The device of the turning mechanism of a plastic window

The rotary mechanism is traditional. Provides opening of the sash into the room. The system is thought out to the smallest detail. It is based on canopies that are installed vertically in the fitting groove. This mechanism is basic. Present in almost all plastic windows. Its advantage is the ability to connect automation.

The angle of rotation of the sash depends on the comb and the design features of the handle. Doors with this operating mechanism are available in different shapes: square, arched, trapezoidal, rectangular.

The main disadvantage of this version of a plastic window block is that when open, the sash takes up space. This does not make it possible to place plants and necessary decorative items on the windowsill.

Tilt and turn sash - pros and cons

According to GOST, a tilt-and-turn sash is a sash that rotates around a vertical and horizontal lower axis.

The tilt-and-turn mechanism was invented in 1935 by German engineer Wilhelm Frank, who later founded the world-famous window and door fittings company Roto Frank.

The fittings have become widespread throughout the world and have had a revolutionary impact on the development of the window industry. The Roto Frank concern is a recognized world leader in the production of tilt-and-turn fittings. In Russia, this fittings have also gained well-deserved popularity - every 3rd window is sold with Roto fittings.

Advantages

The tilt-and-turn sash is superior in functionality to the fixed and pivoting sash. Firstly, in relation to a blind sash, it has all the advantages of a turning sash. Secondly, in relation to the rotary sash, it has an additional mode - tilting.

Photo: sash with Roto tilt-and-turn fittings with micro-ventilation in tilt mode The distances between the frame and sash in tilt mode are a triangle with the sharpest angle at the bottom. In the upper part, the sash extends as far as possible from the frame by 140 mm at the top, and in the lower part it comes close to the frame. This gives the following advantages of the folding mode:

Comfortable ventilation in summer:

  • ventilation without rain. When the sash is in the folding position, during rain, water does not enter the room, as when ventilating using a rotating sash;
  • safe ventilation . In the tilting mode, the sash is limited in opening and the position of the sash is fixed due to a special element in the scissors, which prevents the sash from swinging open or slamming shut on its own, as can happen with a rotary sash.

Number of sashes

One of the main characteristics that classify plastic window structures is the number of sashes or the type of structure. In addition to single-, double- and triple-hung windows (discussed below), there are also:

  • balcony blocks. They are a window with a door providing access to a loggia or balcony;
  • windows of loggias and balconies. There are special requirements for this design, since the glazing area is, in most cases, large. Therefore, the window must be at the same time not only light, but also strong and rigid. It is difficult to attribute such designs to a specific type based on the number of doors, since they, as a rule, combine several varieties.

Rice. 2. Plastic glazing of the balcony.

Single-leaf plastic windows

A single-leaf PVC window is rightfully considered the most economical option. Most often, manufacturers make the sash openable; less common is a blind single-leaf window. This variety was almost always used in the construction of residential buildings in Soviet times.

Now single-leaf windows are used much less often, mainly in private housing construction and in the construction of country houses, for installation in small premises, often non-residential. The reason for this is simple and obvious. To ensure comfortable living conditions in a room of normal size, a single-leaf window will not be enough.

Rice. 3. Single-leaf PVC window.

Double-leaf plastic windows

This type of window design involves the presence of two sashes. It is the most common because, in addition to its universal performance characteristics, it also has a relatively low cost.

In most cases, one of the sashes of a double-hung window is made to open, and the other is blind. Although quite often both doors are made to open. The scope of application of double-leaf PVC window structures is extremely wide - they are used almost everywhere, from small private houses and cottages to multi-storey high-rise residential buildings and large public buildings.

Rice. 4. Double-leaf window.

Three-leaf plastic windows

From the name it is obvious that this design has three doors. In most cases, three-leaf windows made of PVC profiles are used in the most spacious rooms, halls, living rooms, dining rooms and similar rooms. They can be manufactured in a variety of options depending on the number of opening doors.

Most often, the opening mechanism is installed on the two outer flaps, but in order to save money, some customers choose the option with one opening flap located in the middle. It is not surprising that the most expensive option in terms of cost is the one when all three doors open. Such designs are also possible, but are quite rare.

Rice. 5. Three-leaf version with outer opening doors.

Comfortable ventilation in winter using the micro-ventilation option

With the onset of cold weather, the folding mode leads to overcooling of the room, so for comfortable ventilation in winter there is a “micro-ventilation” mode. It is also called micro-slit ventilation (MSV) or slot ventilation.

According to GOST, slot ventilation is limited ventilation of a room through a fixed gap in the narthex of a slightly open sash element (opening area no more than 0.02 m2).

Photo: in micro-ventilation mode, the gap between the frame and the sash is comfortable for winter ventilation - cold air does not enter directly into the room, but at an angle of 90 degrees. The tilt-and-turn sash with micro-ventilation in the upper part moves away from the frame at a distance of about 5 mm, which prevents massive intake cold air. Almost no cold air enters the lower part of the swing-out flap. This allows you to completely abandon the use of windows.

Flaws

The disadvantage of the option with a tilt-and-turn sash is the higher price compared to a rotary sash, on average 300 rubles higher, a blind sash - 2,500 rubles. Single-stage micro-ventilation adds about 300-500 rubles to the price of a swing-out sash.

Characteristics of such PVC products

The technical characteristics of plastic folding windows include material of manufacture, weight, color, seal, mechanism. It is recommended to consider these indicators in more detail :

  • production material – plastic, namely ethylene and combined chlorine;
  • profile class can be A - 3 mm thick and B - 2.7 mm thick;
  • the number of cameras can be 1, 2 and 3 glasses;
  • the number of sashes can be up to 3 pieces;
  • the weight of such a window depends on the glass;
  • color – classic white.

The folding mechanism is installed at the factory, it can be right or left, and can be supplemented with a rotating mechanism. It has a fitting groove of 9-13 mm, can be white or brown, depending on the manufacturer.

Window positions

The sash of a tilt-and-turn aluminum window can be installed in the following positions:

  • ordinary. Rotates around a lateral vertical axis and opens, as a rule, inward;
  • transom Rotates around the lower hinges, like a folding window, used for quick air exchange;
  • for mini-ventilation. The aluminum sash is installed so that there is a gap of several millimeters between it and the frame;
  • closed. In this case, the window fits tightly to the frame, preventing outside air from entering.

Roto NX fittings are the best option for modernizing windows

The 6th generation Roto NX fittings are the latest development of the market flagship. the Roto NT model, which has been popular for many years . The new fittings have received a number of significant advantages:

Photo: Roto NX anti-burglary fittings: 1) anti-burglary striker, 2) anti-burglary striker for ventilation mode, 3) windows in ventilation mode are protected from intruders *Often window owners, leaving the house in the summer, leave the windows in tilt mode. This was used by robbers who easily entered the home, especially on the 1st floor. The new special Roto NX anti-burglary strikers allow the window to maintain a high level of anti-burglary resistance, class RC2, even when the window is tilted.

Subspecies by design and type of glass

Structurally, this type of plastic double-glazed windows can be divided into 2 types:

  • folding;
  • top-hung.

Folding is considered the most practical and safe option for ventilation. Top-hung is the same design, only it opens from below . At the same time, the product can be opened outwards, which is not always convenient, but is important in some rooms.

Based on the type of glass, tilting windows can be divided into those with float glass installed - they come with the basic package. You can also highlight energy-saving glass - they save heat in the room, sun-protection glass - they reduce the transmission of light and solar thermal energy. Also, tempered glass, triplex, reinforced and armored glass are installed on folding double-glazed windows.

Where is the best place to go for window upgrades?

Modern windows allow you to modernize them by changing the design of individual elements, for example, retrofitting windows with tilt-and-turn sashes instead of fixed and rotary sashes, including the possibility of installing fittings of a different brand.

Photo: installation of scissors on a swing-out sash 2 options:

  • contact the window manufacturer or the company where the window was purchased;
  • contact a company that specializes in window repairs.

In what cases should you choose option 1 or 2?

Option 1

This option is suitable if the owner ordered the windows and knows the manufacturer’s contacts.

Photo: the best option for upgrading a window is to find a contract for the purchase of windows and contact the seller or window manufacturer. If the manufacturer works with the same components, then the algorithm of actions is as follows:

  1. Find a contract for the purchase of a window.
  2. Find your order number.
  3. Find contact details of the manufacturer or seller.
  4. Contact the company and explain what needs to be changed.

However, if the window was purchased several years ago, there is a possibility that the manufacturer no longer works with this profile and fittings. Then there is option 2 to resolve the issue.

Option 2

This option is possible if the owner does not know from whom the window was purchased and from what materials it was made, or the manufacturer has closed and no longer works. Then you will have to contact a window repair company. Option 2 is less preferable, since there are a large number of companies on the market with a low level of professionalism and overpriced services.

Photo: you need to be careful when choosing a service company so as not to be left without money. Basically, such service companies work with a single manufacturer. If a window needs to be modernized, and the manufacturer uses other components (profiles and fittings), then specialists will convince the owner to replace the window with a new one. The owner of the windows will have to independently understand the design of his window and look for companies that work with such profiles and fittings. This is necessary so as not to change the mounted frame, but to make changes only to the design of the sash and fittings.

Attention! Recently, many fraudulent window repair companies have appeared. Companies offer free diagnostics and then sell services at significantly inflated prices - the price of a new window!

Algorithm of actions for option 2:

  • search on the Internet or other sources for contacts of service companies for window maintenance and repair;
  • study reviews on the Internet, find out if there are anyone among your friends who can recommend a trusted company;
  • monitor prices for such services in different companies;
  • call specialists from one, or better yet, several companies to your home for an inspection (free of charge), evaluate each one for a final decision;
  • pay attention to the warranty provided.

Any window can be upgraded, even if:

  • the window is made from the profile of another model;
  • the window is made from fittings of a different brand.

Service companies, as a rule, only offer the option of replacing the entire set, regardless of the need to replace individual elements or the sash assembly.

For example:

  • replacing a fixed double-glazed window with a pivoting sash;
  • replacing a fixed double-glazed window with a tilt-and-turn sash;
  • Replacing a swing sash with a tilt and turn sash.

In some cases, it may be necessary to replace the window. This happens when the installed window is of poor quality. In this case, it is better to order a new high-quality window, taking into account the improvement of the design, than to modernize a window of poor quality, so that it does not work out, as in the well-known proverb: “Changing an awl for soap.”

How to choose?

You have already realized that there are quite a few different systems for opening PVC windows, each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages.

When choosing a window unit, experts advise paying attention not only to the beauty and thermal insulation properties of the structure, but also to its functionality:

  1. Be sure to evaluate the presence or absence of free space near the window opening. It is quite possible that there will be no such space at all, and it will be problematic for you to open and close a certain type of window sashes.
  2. You also need to evaluate how often you will have to ventilate the room. For example, if the window is intended for a children's room, then it would be better to order a window with a folding mechanism. On the one hand, this is safer for the baby, and on the other hand, you can ventilate the room more often.

The method of opening plastic windows plays a rather serious role when using them. These include ease of use, safety, space saving, and many other serious factors. That is why experts who install such window units always advise not to rush into choosing a design.

Types of execution

Aluminum windows of tilting, turning and mixed types can be manufactured in two versions:

  • A 68 (warm). The profile system is intended for installation in heated residential premises, as well as where a high level of thermal insulation is required. The basic size for the window sash is 68 or 76 mm, for the frame – 68 mm. The basis of the A 68 system is a structure of two aluminum profiles connected by thermal inserts made of reinforced polyamide. The use of the latter allows you to create a thermal break in the structure and significantly increase its thermal insulation properties.
  • A 50 (cold). The aluminum profile of this series is intended for the manufacture of internal windows or those structures that do not have high thermal requirements, for example in unheated rooms (attics, attics). The standard size of the aluminum sash is 60 mm, the frame is 52 mm. The thickness of the filling can vary between 3–41 mm due to the use of different combinations of seals and beads. The series allows you to install locking beads on the desired side and select the desired direction for opening the sash.
