Blinds are a comfortable, beautiful, easy-to-handle replacement for conventional textile curtains. But dust periodically accumulates on them and stains appear. Then there is a need to disassemble them and remove them for cleaning or washing. This work must be done extremely carefully, taking into account the design of the curtain, so as not to break the cord system or wrinkle the slats.
How to remove vertical curtains
Modern models of blinds are treated with a special protective impregnation. It protects from moisture and fading in the sun, does not allow dust to settle, and prevents deformation. To prevent the material from deteriorating and the need to repair the entire structure, you need to remove vertical fabric blinds carefully, avoiding bending or stretching of the slats.
Before starting work, it is recommended to clean the curtain with a vacuum cleaner or walk over the slats with a dry cloth. This way, dust will not scatter throughout the room. To remove the fasteners you will need a screwdriver.
Tips on how to remove vertical slats without damaging them
Before starting work, all chains and laces are twisted, tied with a rope or elastic band and removed. This prevents them from getting tangled and greatly simplifies the task.
Important!
A stepladder is used for work. It allows you to keep your hands low so that they get less tired.
Vertical blinds for cleaning or washing are removed step by step so as not to get confused:
- Open the blinds to the limit, gather them to one edge.
- Weighting agents are pulled out from the lower parts of the lamellas.
- Disconnect the chain.
- The lamella is taken by the upper part and slightly directed upward towards the cornice. Turn your hand towards the long part of the runner. With a characteristic click, the eye of the lamella jumps off the hook.
More information on how to properly remove vertical lamellas is described in the following video story.
The removed strips of fabric are placed in a neat stack on top of each other, and then rolled up and sent for washing or storage. Slats made of wood or plastic are removed in the same way, not forgetting to remove the fasteners. They cannot be bent, so these strips are simply folded, being careful not to scratch them.
Removing aluminum blinds
Such a curtain is attached with bolts with clamps or plugs in the side. Removing horizontal blinds from a window for cleaning is easy. Metal bolts or clamps are removed by turning them out with a screwdriver. If aluminum blinds are fastened using plugs, they are pulled out. Then the clamps are pulled towards themselves and shifted to the right. After this, all the planks are carefully removed and folded.
Important!
Details on how to properly remove blinds are usually included in the assembly instructions on the packaging. Therefore, there is no need to throw it away immediately after installation.
How to get rid of stains from fabric roller blinds?
This question arises quite often and is complicated by the nature of the occurrence of certain stains. If you have roller blinds hanging in your kitchen, it is advisable to collect them while cooking. But often we forget about this and then stains of grease, stains from berries and vegetables, and coffee appear on the curtains.
To begin with, you can use a stationery eraser. If this method does not help, then use special stain removers. For this purpose, there are special, gentle, natural-based cleaning products on sale that will make it easier for you to get rid of difficult dirt and stains. The main thing is to carefully study the instructions, and before washing, test the product on an inconspicuous area of the fabric to make sure that it will not affect the color and structure of the fabric. You can also use hydrogen peroxide or ammonia to remove stains, but be very careful so as not to spoil the fabric.
Removing horizontal curtains
There are several types of fastening curtains with horizontal slats:
- Plastic fasteners are used for fastening short curtains. To separate them, the clasp is simply moved to the side. This releases the curtain from its fastenings.
- The L-shaped fastening consists of a pair of plastic clamps that extend over the side of the cornice. To dismantle them, carefully bend the cornice strip towards you and hold it with your fingers. After this, remove the fastening. To simplify the work, you can bend the wall of the cornice with a nail file or a narrow screwdriver.
- The narrow twist holder is a clamp that rotates around a bolt and securely holds the curtain. It is convenient to detach it if there is access at the top. Then the latch is moved towards you with your fingers. If this option is problematic to implement, the lower part of the holder is pryed up with a narrow screwdriver and moved in a circle to the right. This releases the fastener.
- The wide twist holder is stronger and more reliable. It is removed in the same way as a narrow twist holder.
If all manipulations are performed correctly and carefully, the curtain control system will easily separate from the brackets holding it. If difficulties arise, you should completely disconnect the system from the frame, without separating it from the brackets.
Important!
To avoid breaking parts of the blinds, do not pull the fasteners too hard.
Most blinds are attached to the frame without the use of additional corners. If they are present, they are disconnected from the frame by unscrewing the hexagon screws with a special key. Only after disconnecting the corners do they begin to remove the curtain itself.
Before starting work, it is necessary to understand by what principle the brackets are attached. Most often, a socket wrench is used for fastening, turning it clockwise. Then, to remove the system, the fasteners are turned in the opposite direction.
Care Tips
Proper care is the key to long service life of products. It provides not only the need to open or close the blinds, but also regularly apply preventive measures. These include the following:
- To maintain the appearance of your blinds, you need to clean them every month.
- If fabric curtains are used in the kitchen, they should be replaced with metal or plastic ones. They are much easier to remove dirt and grease from.
- The planks should be checked regularly for damage. If necessary, these structural parts can be replaced with new ones.
- If it is not possible to remove the blinds, they should be cleaned using a vacuum cleaner.
- To avoid the accumulation of dust and dirt, you can apply a special composition to the slats.
- You need to carefully monitor the condition of fabric blinds and avoid creases in the material.
Removing blinds from windows is quite simple. To do this, you need to understand the mechanism of their fastening and carefully perform all actions. If you manage to complete this job, you can easily wash the curtains and restore their attractive appearance.
Removing cassette roller blinds
To fix roller shutters, magnetic holders or especially strong double-sided tape are usually used. In some cases, the roll is hidden under a cassette or secured with brackets.
Before removing roller blinds, determine how the fastening is done:
- The magnets are simply separated from each other and the curtain is washed.
- To remove the tape, pry it over the edge with the sharp edge of a knife or nail scissors and carefully peel it off. The remaining glue is wiped off with alcohol.
- Rolls attached to the bracket are removed according to the same principle as horizontal ones. In this case, it is important to understand how the holder is fixed.
- To remove the cassette fasteners, first pull out the side plugs. This element is intended for decoration and can be easily snapped off. After this, they determine where the mechanism that folds and unfolds the curtain is located. From this side, take out the gear and pull out the roll with the curtain to the side. Then remove the roller shutter from the pipe.

Built-in blinds in double-glazed windows
Such a curtain is a structure located inside a glass unit made of metal-plastic. It perfectly protects from light, but if necessary, it can be combined with other types of curtains. The advantage of built-in blinds is that they do not take up space in the room and do not require cleaning at all. The double-glazed window reliably protects the slats from dust, grease, soot and other contaminants. Since the built-in blinds are tightly closed on all sides with double-glazed windows, there is no need to remove them for cleaning.
Important!
It is especially recommended to install such structures in rooms with high fire safety requirements and under difficult operating conditions. In an ordinary apartment, built-in blinds will look appropriate in the bathroom, kitchen or on a glassed-in loggia.
What detergents should I use?
Before washing, you need to lay out the dismantled fabric on a flat surface and try to remove dirt from it using a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner with a fabric attachment.
If this does not help and the fabric does not look presentable, it should be lightly wiped with a damp sponge. To do this, take a basin, bowl or other small container and dilute the soap solution.
The easiest way to prepare a working solution is based on liquid soap.
But you can take a bar of ordinary soap and grate it on a fine grater
It is better to use soft water. If your tap comes out with hard water, buy a bottle of plain drinking water
Dissolve the crushed soap completely in warm water until foam forms.
Soak a sponge in it. Please note - the sponge should be slightly damp, but not wet. To do this, you need to squeeze it well. After the washing procedure with a damp sponge, the curtain should not be wet, it can only be slightly damp.
Before bringing the sponge to the curtain fabric, wring it out over the basin each time
Remember! Excess moisture is detrimental to the canvas; moisture destroys the impregnation. Without impregnation, the fabric will lose its shape and become unusable.
This is especially true for products with a pattern that can be hopelessly damaged.
Note! When washing roller blinds yourself, you cannot add other cleaning agents to the soap solution.
When using a sponge, remember to wet the soft side of the sponge, not the hard one. Firstly: it cleans better, and secondly: it is better to avoid contact of the hard part of the sponge with the curtain.
It is much more difficult to damage a curtain with the soft foam side than with the hard side with a float
After cleaning, the fabric base must be left in a horizontal position until it dries completely. Drying should occur gradually, slowly and independently. Using household appliances, including a fan, iron or hair dryer, to speed up the drying of the fabric can completely ruin your curtain.
Simply leave the curtain in a shaded room until completely dry.
Also, to speed up drying, do not leave the material in direct sunlight. Drying too quickly can ruin the shape of the product, so it is better to simply leave the curtain for a while in a dark, dry and well-ventilated room for drying. While the curtain is drying, you can clean its functional mechanism from dust (and hair, if there are pets in the house).
Removing curtains with ceiling mounts
Horizontal models, roller and cassette curtains are usually attached to the wall above the window opening or to a metal-plastic structure. Only vertical blinds can have ceiling mounting. In this case, tapes made of fabric or other material are removed in the usual way, but if necessary, the cornice to which they are attached can also be removed for cleaning.
This part of the blinds is secured with several latches along its entire length. They are not visible from the side of the room, but they are clearly visible from the inside in the form of protruding parts. It is necessary to press hard on these protrusions so that the part gives way and separates from the cornice. This allows you to remove the cornice while leaving the piece attached to the ceiling.
Important!
If the cornice is short and secured only at the ends, the fastenings are removed one by one, holding the part with your free hand.
For long curtain rods with numerous fastenings, they are disconnected alternately from each side, gradually moving towards the center. In this case, you will probably need outside help to remove the last fastener.
Wooden
Wooden panels, like fabric ones, should be removed one at a time to avoid damaging the fragile structure.
Open the blinds, remove the side clips, remove the bottom chain (weights are missing on many models), and then remove the panels, one at a time, unfastening them from the curtain rod.
To clean wooden slats, simply wipe them with a damp cloth. In most cases, you can not remove such blinds, but simply go over them with a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment.
