Reinforcement requirements according to GOST
In Russia, there is GOST 30674-99, which provides for the mandatory use of reinforced liners in the manufacture of any window units. It is this profile that is allowed for installation in residential and non-residential premises, and the thickness of the reinforcing metal must be at least 1.2 mm. However, unscrupulous manufacturers of metal-plastic windows often do not comply with this requirement and install reinforcement with a thickness of only 0.7 mm, which significantly reduces the rigidity of the structure, leads to early deformation and, as a result, to a large number of dissatisfied customers.
The features of the reinforcing insert and the relationship between it and the size of the window are prescribed in technical documents, since the thickness and shape of the walls of the reinforcing element limits the size of the plastic sash.
Reinforcement is installed manually. If the liner fits tightly into the chamber, the result may be stretching or even rupture of the window walls (the likelihood of this is high when exposed to temperature). Additional GOST requirements that you should pay attention to include:
- The distance from the edge of the profile to the insert is 10-30 mm;
- For double-glazed windows weighing from 60 kg, liners trimmed at an angle of 450 are required;
- Steel elements with a protective zinc coating of 9 microns or more are suitable as reinforcement;
- Only a solid insert can be used in one profile (tears are not allowed);
- At least two screws are required to attach the reinforcing insert.
Plastic profile reinforcement
Reinforcement of a plastic window (reinforcing liners) is a steel element that is installed in the middle chamber of the profile to improve its functional qualities. Reinforcement provides conditions for counteracting operational loads, fastening fittings and installing the structure.
REINFORCEMENT PROVIDES:
Installing Items | Fastening accessories | Connection of structures | Strengthening the structure | Conditions for installation | Burglary resistance of structures |
Manufacturing of reinforced profiles
In the manufacture of reinforcing inserts, a minimum set of tools is used, including a rolling mill, special shears, etc. In addition to a certain thickness of the rolled product and its galvanized layer, GOST regulates the type of steel suitable for such structures - ST2 or ST3.
The size of the reinforcing profile must match the main chamber of the plastic base. If the insert enters the chamber only with the use of additional force, this will lead to the window structure losing the properties specified in GOST and technical documents.
Despite the existing universal standard, some brands of PVC windows require the use of reinforcement of individual shapes and sizes. A suitable shape is made by cold bending using special equipment.
Purpose of reinforcement in PVC windows
INSTALLING ELEMENTSIn the manufacture of structures, elements (imposts, etc.) are fastened through reinforcement. | INSTALLING ACCESSORIESReinforcement ensures reliable fastening of fittings. For example, hinge groups are designed for sash weights up to 130 kg. |
CONNECTION OF STRUCTURESThe connection of prefabricated structures is carried out through the steel walls of reinforcing liners. | INSTALLATION OF STRUCTURESReinforcement ensures reliable installation. Fastening elements transfer operational loads to the opening through reinforcement. |
GEOMETRICAL STABILITYReinforcement ensures geometric stability of the structure under the influence of temperature and wind loads. | PROVIDING burglar resistanceReinforcement is a mandatory element of structures with increased burglary protection classes. |
Types of reinforcing profiles from various manufacturers
Melke
The profiles of this manufacturer use reinforcement with a thickness of 1.5 and 2 mm. The Evolution 70 and Art 85 systems use an O-shape (has improved characteristics). In Smart 60 systems, O-shaped reinforcement is installed only in imposts; in frames, U-shaped reinforcement is used. U-shaped reinforcement is also added to all sashes: there is no other way to secure the fittings.
KBE
The German brand has immediately developed 4 types of profiles with a thickness of 58, 70, 76, 88 mm. They differ from each other not only in thickness, but also in the shape of the profile, as well as the thickness of the reinforcing insert. In one design, as a rule, two types of profiles are installed at once.
Schuco
In addition to windows, the company also produces PVC door structures using 1.5 mm thick rolled metal. In one design, two profiles are often used at once (both O-shaped and U-shaped).
VEKA
In 2018, the manufacturer released 7 window lines and doors at once. All types of PVC products differ in the size and width of the chambers and design. The reinforcing liner is a closed circuit.
Rehau
To reinforce the PVC profile, the manufacturer uses rolled metal with a thickness of 1.2-2 mm, but has recently been working on the idea of the progressive systems described above.
Plafen
The company uses standard type reinforcement. The only difference is in the sizes, varying from one type of product to another (there are 5 of them). The thickness of the reinforcing inserts is 1.5 mm.
Weltplast
To reinforce PVC windows, it uses a closed loop (1.2-1.5 mm) with insulation sufficient for middle-class metal-plastic products.
Thussen
The company uses in production a reinforcing profile of two forms at once with a wall thickness ranging from 1.5-2 mm (a larger thickness provides a high level of strength and warmth).
Salamander
Uses standard profiles with a thickness of 1.5 and 2 mm (according to GOST).
Reinforcing profiles for PVC structures Rehau
Reinforcing profiles for REHAU glazing structures are produced in accordance with TU 1108-001-02068195-2008. Rehau steel profile reinforcements are designed to effectively transfer all operational loads to the window opening.

What parameters does the installation of reinforcing liners require?
What kind of inserts are required is largely determined by the design of the box and the way its elements are connected. The state standard also provides for certain requirements here: for example, it is impossible to allow liners to be joined along the length in one profile. The insert should not be attached to the front side of the product; this can only be done from the back side. The metal structure is secured with at least two self-tapping screws. The fastener should be located no further than 80 cm from the weld seam of the product.
If the profile is white, the screw fastening pitch is 40, if colored - 300 mm. For a frost-resistant profile, this figure is also 300 mm.
To protect the reinforcing profile from corrosion, it is coated with zinc. The thickness should not be less than 9 microns, according to GOST 9.303, the coating should be uniform, without gaps or damage. An important role is played by protecting the steel structure from rust, since a profile that does not have a special coating will quickly become unusable and the structure will be greatly weakened.

Is it possible to reinforce a window using alternative methods?
First of all, you need to figure out why you need a reinforcing profile for PVC windows. This reinforcement, invisible from the outside, is required to ensure that the plastic system does not sag or collapse when installed in a window or doorway. It can be influenced by various physical factors, including weather conditions and operation, which is why the window needs to be reinforced. However, the metal reinforcing profile also has a number of disadvantages: the main one is its inability to retain heat.
Alternative reinforcement options include glass composite materials. They are not inferior in strength to steel, but are able to resist freezing, have less weight, and are not able to rust. Such an insert is placed in plastic profiles by such famous manufacturers as REHAU. To strengthen structures, the concern uses modern composite material RAU-FIPRO, which is a high-tech fiberglass. It does not have steel reinforcement and the Geneo profile; the materials are replaced with composite ones. At the moment, such windows are gaining popularity in Europe, as tests have proven their strength.
When choosing a reinforcing profile for plastic windows, what it is, you need to understand quite clearly. While GOST standards are provided for metal products, such standards have not yet been adopted for composite materials. By choosing products from reliable manufacturers that have been known on the market for many years, you can be sure of the high quality and durability of the products.

To complete a line for a reinforcing profile (roll bending equipment for a reinforcing profile), it is recommended to proceed from the required productivity and range of reinforcing profiles. The re-adjustment of the reinforcement mill from one profile to another can be carried out using both rollers and cassettes , i.e. blocks with stands, shafts and already configured profiling (rolling) rollers. As an intermediate option when producing 3 or more reinforcing profiles, 2 cassettes can be offered for delivery to save money. In this option, the manufacturer does not waste time on readjustment of profiling rollers, i.e. While one cassette is working on the line, changeover is carried out on the second cassette with rollers. We note that with a large number of profiles that are planned to be produced with an equal percentage of performance, it makes sense to calculate the option of purchasing 2 or more lines.

Are there standards for reinforcement?
A reinforcing profile for PVC windows is an element made of steel, which is located inside a plastic structure and is invisible to the eye. It is installed inside plastic profile chambers to make the structure more durable and rigid. This technique is effective not only in the production of window products, but is also used to create plastic doors or glazing.
There are strict regulations that manufacturers must adhere to. What the reinforcing profile should be is regulated by GOST 30674-99; the standard establishes not only the wall thickness of the reinforcing profile and the quality of the material from which it should be made, but also obliges manufacturers to introduce a metal structure into any plastic window.

Characteristics of PVC profile
The lion's share of all installed window units is made up of plastic products. The market offers windows from the profiles of dozens of manufacturers, which at first glance look the same. Often, a low level of quality manifests itself only after some time of operation, when it becomes obvious that the profile cannot cope with its functions and does not provide the proper level of thermal protection. When choosing a product, it is useful to know the main significant characteristics of a PVC window profile.
Wall thickness
According to this indicator, 3 product groups are distinguished:
- Class A. This includes products that have an outer wall thickness of 2.8 mm and an inner wall thickness of 2.5 mm. Such indicators are considered optimal for ensuring the best thermal insulation of a living space.
- Class B. Products with an outer wall thickness of 2.5 mm and an inner wall thickness of 2.0 mm. Such products provide less reliable protection against heat loss and are more susceptible to deformation during operation. The main purpose is installation in shops and public institutions.
- Class C. Products with thinner walls than in previous classes. Windows made from it are intended for glazing non-residential, warehouse, and industrial premises.
