Windows on the balcony - which ones are better to install? Useful tips from a master with a description of the correct selection of glazing

Advantages of plastic windows for balconies and loggias

Plastic windows do not cause controversy about their advantages. Installing plastic windows on a balcony or loggia is a practical solution that will allow you to save effort, nerves and money. That's because they:

  • durable and last at least 40 years;
  • resistant to external factors, temperature changes, and humidity;
  • not susceptible to fading and mold;
  • They are energy efficient - they retain heat well, protect from cold, and help save money on utility bills;
  • provide an optimal microclimate in the room even with panoramic glazing;
  • equipped with two sealing contours, therefore they guarantee perfect tightness and complete protection from external noise;
  • are not subject to heavy contamination, therefore do not require frequent washing;
  • have high strength due to unique PVC reinforcement;
  • allow you to increase the usable area of your home.

Summary – selection criteria

So, when choosing the type of glazing for a balcony, you need to take into account the following main factors:

  1. Technical condition of the house, permissible loads on the slab. Before you begin work on arranging a balcony, conduct an analysis of the condition of the balcony slab and obtain the necessary conclusions and permits from representatives of the housing office. In general, the older the house, the greater the likelihood that it will not be possible to insulate the balcony and install glazing.
  2. Cold or warm. It makes sense to choose double or triple glazed windows if comprehensive insulation work has been carried out in advance. Otherwise, it is enough to limit yourself to single-chamber plastic windows or even cold glazing.
  3. Budget. The average price category is PVC double-glazed windows, more expensive ones are wooden and warm aluminum. The most budget solution is cold aluminum glazing.
  4. Technical and operational characteristics. To create a comfortable microclimate on attached and insulated loggias, it is advisable to use double-glazed windows with the maximum range of thermal insulation properties. For cold balconies, the most cost-effective solutions are used.
  5. Optimal combination of opening systems. Depending on the glazing area and the purpose of the balcony, provide several swing-out sashes. Their location should provide full access to the outer surfaces of the windows for easy maintenance.
  6. Hardware brand. Give preference to trusted manufacturers, since the durability of the double-glazed window largely depends on the quality of the fittings. Provide the options you need.

Whatever type of glazing you choose, it is necessary to install the window structures with high quality. The tightness and durability of double-glazed windows depend no less on compliance with installation technology than on the quality of the product, so the choice of craftsmen should also be approached carefully. Errors made during installation can completely cover up all the advantages of the most expensive and branded products. Sellers of double-glazed windows usually offer installation services for their products with a guarantee - in most cases it is profitable to take advantage of such an offer.

Cold or warm windows

If you do not plan to insulate the balcony, then it is enough to install cold glazing from an inexpensive aluminum profile. It will protect the space from precipitation, wind and dust - it will be similar to a summer veranda. Lightweight aluminum structures are often the only solution for residents of old houses with weak slabs who want to somehow improve their balconies and use them to maximum benefit.

Aluminum sliding windows

Single-chamber double-glazed windows will provide good sound insulation, but will not save you from heat loss through the floor, ceiling and walls. The use of more expensive 2-3-chamber double-glazed windows for an uninsulated balcony does not make sense at all.

If the loggia will be added to the total area of the apartment or used as a separate living space, then in addition to the mandatory capital insulation work, it is necessary to provide warm windows, at least with double glazing.

Glazing methods

Cold

Characteristic features of this insulation: no material is used to insulate the room, the frame consists of one glass.

Materials for production: wooden frames and inexpensive aluminum profiles.

For cold glazing, elements made of wooden frames were used.

This type of design can eliminate the influence of precipitation and wind. The level of temperature values outside and indoors differs by a maximum of 5 degrees, so it will be uncomfortable in the room when it is hot or cold.

Wooden frame frames.

Warm

The main task: to ensure high-quality thermal insulation inside.

Components: frames with double-glazed windows and insulation; additional heating sources are also installed: underfloor heating system or electric heaters are used.

The main advantage is the ability to use the space all year round. The warm glazing option allows you to continue the living space of the apartment.

Warm way. To create it, a reliable plastic profile is used.

Professionals recommend using a PVC profile as a material for production, which is equipped with a double-glazed window with heat-saving properties. On the construction market you can find a suitable option that will satisfy you both in terms of quality and cost.

The use of this insulation method is not suitable for those structures whose pressure is limited to 500 kg/sq. m. If this condition is not met, there is a high probability that the balcony will collapse.

Pros and cons of double-glazed windows

This material has a number of advantages:

  1. Lots of light (due to the size of the glass) - less money will be spent on additional lighting in the room.
  2. Reducing the penetration of sunlight into the apartment space.
  3. Limiting room heating.
  4. Original, stylish design.
  5. Any sizes to choose from.
  6. Noise protection.
  7. Possibility to expand external glazing.

One of the factors for preserving heat in the balcony space is a high-quality double-glazed window.
There are also disadvantages:

  1. A large amount of money that will have to be invested in converter radiators for floor surfaces. If they are not installed, the loggia will not be suitable in winter.
  2. Large size means more care.
  3. For safety, reinforced (tempered) glass is used - additional costs.
  4. During frosty winters, ice and condensation may form due to sudden changes in weather conditions.

Panoramic double glazed windows

Continuous glazing allows you to create a bright space not only on the balcony, but also in the adjacent room of the apartment.

Panoramic windows with sliding system.

The main task when choosing this type of structure is to ensure thermal insulation of the room, as well as take into account excessive heating of the loggia space on hot days.

Panoramic windows with hinged opening.

Main advantages:

  • Good level of room illumination, regardless of the weather;
  • The opportunity to enjoy the panorama of the city or nature outside the window;
  • A large amount of light visually increases the area.

Disadvantages of panoramic windows on the loggia:

  • For those who are afraid of heights, being on the upper floors can cause a feeling of discomfort. This disadvantage does not apply to low-rise buildings;
  • The living space is clearly visible.

Which profile to choose for glazing a loggia

The load-bearing element of a window structure is called a profile. A double-glazed window and fittings are installed in it. Previously it was called a frame. Modern modifications are more complex. Several chambers can be located inside, the size and number of which determine the insulating characteristics of the system. The material from which the frame is made matters. There are three possible options.

Wood

Traditional material for window systems.

Advantages

  • It can withstand a glass unit of any width and weight; the strength of wood allows this.
  • Natural wood is environmentally friendly and completely safe for people. It does not emit toxic substances, provided that it has not been treated with uncertified impregnations.
  • An attractive appearance, especially if valuable wood was used to make the elements.
  • The frame is durable. If necessary, repairs and partial restoration of parts are possible.
  • Low thermal conductivity. Wooden frames retain heat well.

Flaws

  • Heavy weight, which often requires reinforcement of the base.
  • The tree is quite capricious to care for. Before assembly, it must be impregnated with special compounds, however, from time to time it needs additional processing.
  • Natural wood is an expensive material. Therefore, the price of such systems is high.

All this explains why wooden frames for balcony structures are rarely chosen.

Aluminium alloy

The frames are made of an alloy based on three metals: aluminum, magnesium and silicon. The first gives the frame the necessary strength, the second improves the casting characteristics of the material, the last increases reliability.

Advantages

  • Durability. On average, the design lasts 80 years without changing its performance characteristics. This is more than its PVC counterpart.
  • Resistance to adverse influences. The alloy is not sensitive to any weather changes. Neither precipitation nor ultraviolet radiation spoil it. It is not subject to corrosion and deformation.
  • Fire safety. Metal parts do not burn. This ensures that there is no fire spread or accidental combustion.
  • Light weight. Aluminum is a lightweight metal; it does not place additional load on the concrete base. Therefore, there is no need to strengthen the slab.

Flaws

  • The disadvantage of an aluminum alloy profile is its high thermal conductivity. It gives off heat very quickly. Therefore it is used only for cold glazing. This shortcoming is leveled out in frames with thermal inserts, which can be installed in “warm” systems.
  • Another disadvantage is the high price.

PVC (polyvinyl chloride)

The frame is made from a mixture, the main element of which is polyvinyl chloride. This is plastic that is safe for living organisms. Modifiers and other substances are added in small quantities to give the finished product the desired characteristics. For example, UV resistance, color, etc.

If the composition of additives or their quantity does not meet the standards, the PVC frame acquires the ability to release toxic substances. Therefore, they buy only certified products.

Advantages

  • High insulation characteristics. Plastic systems retain heat well and do not allow sound to pass through.
  • Resistance to deformation processes, moisture, mechanical damage and any weather influences.
  • Easy to care and maintain. Almost any contamination can be easily washed off with a soap solution or a special product for plastic windows.
  • Large selection of colors, textures and designs. It is possible to produce a frame of any shape, even the most complex.

Flaws

The disadvantages include a relatively short service life. Plastic windows will last 20-25 years. True, their price is the lowest of all analogues. Metal-plastic lasts much longer, more than 50 years. This is polyvinyl chloride reinforced with metal elements. Such systems do not differ in appearance from plastic ones, but they are more durable and reliable. Metal-plastic is considered the optimal solution to the question of what is better for glazing balconies: aluminum or plastic.

Types according to the type of opening of the valves

Based on the type of opening of the sashes, double-glazed windows are divided into sliding and hinged.

Swing ones have:

  1. High tightness
  2. Soundproofing
  3. Thermal insulation.

Cons: they take up a lot of space when opened. If you have a small balcony, this is inconvenient.

Not all companies produce five-chamber windows, since such a product is not in wide demand

Advantages:

  1. Low price.
  2. Light weight.
  3. Easy installation.
  4. Noise and heat insulation.
  5. Ease of use.

In winter, ice may freeze on the outside, which increases the difficulty of opening the window.
