Everything in the interior of the room should be perfect. In this case, not only facing materials and furniture, but also decorative elements play a significant role. Many housewives pay special attention to the choice of curtains and cornices, of which there are a large number. A shade for a ceiling cornice is an excellent option for a decorative element that can give the room some zest, attracting the eye.
Advantages
Ceiling and wall-mounted baguette curtain rods have a number of advantages over other designs, which is why they have gained popularity.
Read more: Curtain rods are capable of holding multi-layer fabrics, regardless of the type and weight of the fabric. For example, thin rods are incapable of such “feats”, since they require several rows, and even more so strings - they will sag even from a piece of cotton. Rail grooves allow fabric structures to move easily in different directions without getting stuck inside
It is important to ensure that the number of hooks is sufficient even for small folds - you will have to insert additional ones only after removing the structure. The appearance is great
A specially selected width will allow you to hide unsightly edges of curtains or protruding hooks, as well as imperfections in the wall or covering. Cornice holders come in different shapes, making it easy to frame a non-standard opening. For example, arches, bay windows and other architectural delights. Due to its volume, the curtain rod will increase the space if you choose the ceiling option and reduce it otherwise. These types of curtain holders are easy to maneuver with the visual vision of the room.
Not a single design can be without its drawbacks. The molding strip for the cornice does not escape them, although there are few disadvantages:
Frame holders are not suitable for all interior styles. For example, minimalism or hi-tech generally does not accept this type. They experiment with simple strips of strict shape and color, but wide stripes do not fit into the overall concept of the room - a stainless rod or string would be best suited there
Baguette strips are used with caution in country or rustic interiors. The best option for a cornice molding remains classic, retro, modern, empire and other styles where luxury is welcomed.
Hanging curtains under a wooden cornice is difficult
To do this, folds are first formed before fixing the canvas on the cornice, cleaved with clamps if necessary, and then hung. Also, the following curtain options are not suitable for holder options - puffs, Austrian canvases. Multi-layer drapery will make the structure so heavy that attention will constantly shift to the window opening. The best option is straight floor-length fabrics, without multi-layering. Traditional textiles will do. If the curtain rod made of fabric for curtains is made in a single version, then such a set is considered the most successful for a window opening.

Plastic cornice
Designs of ceiling cornices for curtains
Plastic cornice for the ceiling is considered the most common and budget solution. Despite the low price and simple design, such models are not inferior in terms of functionality to expensive options.
The features of plastic strips include the following points:
- neutral white design matches any interior design of the room;
- The bar design can withstand light and medium curtains;
- models come with rounded ends;
- The elastic material of the product allows them to be used on ceiling surfaces in the form of a semicircle.
Plastic models go well with decorative elements.
Paste over
Another spectacular type of decorating a ceiling cornice for a ceiling is pasting it with various materials. The selected material is glued onto the pre-abrasive surface using PVA glue. After drying, everything is also treated with a fixing varnish. Lace fabrics, strips of tulle, decorative ribbons, beads, rhinestones, buttons and many other materials can be used as finishing materials. Give free rein to your imagination, don’t be afraid to show originality and creativity, combine different materials, and you will certainly create a unique decor for your room.
Illuminated cornices
Types of LED ceiling lights for home
You can create an interesting finish to the ceiling surface by installing cornices to illuminate the ceiling. Such models can be mounted when finishing a rounded ceiling surface.
Illuminated cornices on the ceiling visually increase the height of the room, while the light source becomes invisible. The lighting in this case will be diffused, coming from the ceiling.
Important: the backlit strip must be matched to the color of the ceiling covering, so as not to visually reduce the area of the room.
The disadvantages of this design include the delay of light by the niche. A large amount of light will simply be absorbed by the profile and ceiling covering. Another negative point. This profile requires frequent cleaning. If you ignore cleaning, the brightness of the lighting will be reduced to zero due to accumulated dust.
Types of cornices

The hood, just like cornices, is made from a variety of materials, but it is still recommended to pay attention to the following indicators:
- moisture resistance;
- strength;
- durability;
- environmental friendliness.
Ceiling cornices with decorative plastic trim are a modern and at the same time practical detail that will fully complement any design solution. A durable cornice, the material for which is PVC, can be used without fear for curtains that are heavy in weight or voluminous due to the number of layers, consisting of several types of fabric. It should also be used if the arrangement project involves the use of curtains, lambrequins, and also when the placement of drapes or light curtains is part of the finished style in the room.
Flat curtain rods are a winning solution for any setting and room, since they can be easily attached to both the ceiling and the wall using other devices - wall brackets. If the size of the cornices turns out to be larger than necessary, then you can easily adjust the size. In order to do this, you will need to remove the rotating element, then move the decorative tape, after which you can easily saw off the excess part of the cornice. Then you have to put on the rotating element and attach the hood to it, after which its excess part will have to be sawed off. At the end you will need to tighten the hood onto the rotating element
A typical problem for plastic curtain rods is damage to the structure due to carelessness, so before installation it is better to first mark the places where screws or other fasteners will presumably be screwed in. Additionally, you will need to mark the places where the holes will be made on the ceiling itself.
It is best, if you choose cornices from a practicality point of view, to choose PVC materials, since they are practically not subject to deformation or drying out. The characteristic feature of plastic curtain rods is that they require virtually no special care. A sufficient measure for general cleaning of the room would be to wipe the decorative hood or the cornice profile itself with a damp cloth. In addition, they are not afraid of the effects of detergents intended for wet cleaning of premises.
The advantages of a ceiling cornice are that it is very easy to remove curtains from them for washing or replacement. The cornices have special paths on each side. It is there that there are special holes designed for inserting hooks into the structure. They are securely fixed with plastic plugs designed to hold the hooks in their intended places. Through these holes you can easily remove the curtain along with the hooks, without having to remove the curtain itself.
Today, the hood is included in the set of curtain rods from many manufacturers and brands, so there will be no problems purchasing it. It is also quite simple to install; a person can do it himself. Thus, purchasing a hood as an additional element to the cornice will be a good option for decorating the room, as well as adding significance, beauty and elegance to the interior
It is necessary to pay maximum attention to the choice of colors, since this interior detail is intended to be constantly in the viewing area. Using a strip for decoration, you can at the same time enhance the reliability of the existing cornice, so you should always install the hood
Hard lambrequins

Lambrequins are a classic method of decorating a cornice. Quite often they are already included with curtains, but this is not always original. In any case, you can always create your own composition. A self-made lambrequin will certainly become the highlight of the interior.
p, blockquote 25,0,0,0,0 —>
You can create a spectacular cornice decoration using openwork lambrequins. They are sold in rolls, come in different widths, you can always purchase the required footage. There are also lambrequins strictly for standard length openings. Their color range is not very wide, but it is selected to suit all styles, so you can always find a suitable model.
CARNICE BEHIND MOLDINGS
One of the simple ways to hide a curtain rod is to mount molded decor on the ceiling - a ceiling plinth. Products made from polyurethane foam, polystyrene foam or duropolymer are suitable for this purpose. Being a type of polystyrene foam, polystyrene foam is not hard, and products made from it are not famous for their rich decor. And if you need an intricate relief pattern, then you should look for a ceiling plinth among a wide range of products made from polyurethane foam and duropolymers.
But gypsum stucco is not used in such cases, since it is heavy, and installation will require reliable embedded parts. The sizes of ceiling plinths vary: from narrow (25 x 25 mm) to wide (200 x 200 mm), the linear length is 2 m. There are also flexible options that allow you to create radius shapes.
To make the curtain rod invisible, the height of the ceiling plinth should be calculated. In this case, we proceed from the fact that the angular space visible when a person looks up with a natural head position is 55°. We take into account that the distance from the front edge of the curtain rod to the ceiling plinth should be about 20-40 mm for light curtains and 40-60 mm for heavy ones, so as not to impede their movement and prevent the formation of creases in the fabric.
The height of the plinth can be calculated using the formula: A = B x tg 55° + C or A = 1,D B + C, where A is the height of the ceiling plinth, B is the distance from the middle of the first groove of the curtain rod to the ceiling plinth, C is the height of the curtain rod cornice to the bottom of the runners. So, in the most “modest” version of a profile with a section of 10 x 15 mm we get: 1.4(15/2 + 20) + + 20 = 58.5 mm, and for a solid profile D 3400 for heavy curtains: A = 1.4 (17/2+ + 40) + 50 = 118 mm. In the latter case, the question immediately arises: “Will a plinth with a height of 120 mm around the perimeter of the room be good?” This calculation helps to find the optimal solution.
The choice of sizes and cross-sectional shapes of polymer ceiling plinths is unusually wide. With the help of such decor, it is not difficult to hide the curtain rod and at the same time elegantly design the transition from the wall to the ceiling. A wide molded plinth will allow you to install hidden lighting (a, b) and emphasize the shape of the room, emphasizing corners and openings (6)
INSTALLATION OF MOLDED CORNICES
When choosing stucco for the ceiling, it is important to consider the features of its fastening. Products made of expanded polystyrene are glued to special liquid nails, and for the installation of skirting boards made of foamed polyurethane and duropolymers, it is advisable to use adhesives from the manufacturer of the same name
For fastening to various surfaces - universal, and for gluing parts to each other - docking. The moldings are cut to the required size using a hand or miter saw. Without exception, all of the mentioned stucco decorations must be coated with water-based paint. Without painting, the decor will turn yellow over time when exposed to light.
Decorating the cornice with your own hands
Modern fastening systems for curtains are already an interior decoration in themselves. The assortment is represented by a variety of models with carvings, inlays, original shapes, unusual painting, etc. But in order for the design of the space to be truly original and exclusive, designers recommend thinking through individual decoration of the cornice.

Decorating ideas
There are many decoration options, it’s hardly possible to cover everything in one article; we will try to talk about the conceptual design techniques on which the rest of the design is based.
You can update the cornice with your own hands using ready-made decor or you can come up with and make the decoration yourself
Hood
A hood is a decorative plastic tape, in rolls, the maximum length of a single piece is 60 m. Gluing or attaching it to a special lock is the easiest way to decorate a cornice. Suitable for baguette models with a smooth front part. You can cut the bar to size yourself and attach the overlay.
A very convenient decoration option if you bought a curtain holder, but it doesn’t fit the interior or you want to update an existing baguette. Decorative tape on the cornice can imitate natural materials, valuable types of wood, carvings, ornaments, and be decorated in a modern style.
A polymer hood is a real find for designers; it helps to quickly decorate the cornice and update the interior
Paint
Painting the cornice to match the curtains is a quick, economical, creative way of decorating. The idea is suitable for decorating rods made of wood or metal, as well as for baguettes. The surface is first sanded with a fine abrasive so that the paint does not peel off later. To ensure the strength of the decorative layer, it is recommended to apply primer.
When the preparatory work is completed, the cornice is painted in the desired color. Acrylic paints or spray paints are suitable for this purpose. After applying the base layer, you can apply a design using a stencil or by hand with a brush. Next, the coating is secured with transparent varnish. This idea helps not only to decorate the curtain mount, but also to change the geometry of the space. When the curtains and cornice are the same color, it visually raises the ceiling, making the room seem higher.
A wooden or plastic baguette can be painted in an antique style, with gilding and patina applied to the base color. Also, use ready-made sets of paints with different effects: craquelure, velor, leather, metallics, mother-of-pearl, etc.
Unusual painting of curtain mounts will add an original touch and decorate the interior
Paste over
You can decorate the cornice by covering it with wallpaper, fabric to match the curtains, or making decoupage from napkins. The selected fabric is glued onto an abrasively sanded base using PVA, and the edges are folded inward. After drying, apply 2 layers of protective varnish. Lace, strips of tulle, self-adhesive decorative tapes, beads, artificial rhinestones and even beautiful buttons are suitable for decoration.
Decoration with flowers
Artificial flowers and imitation climbing plants are a great idea for decorating ceiling and wall cornices. The finished branches are attached to the bar using paper clips or decorative clips. To save money, you can make flowers from corrugated paper with your own hands and connect them into a composition using fishing line or thin wire wrapped in the same paper.
The photo shows a flower arrangement for decorating a cornice.
Hard lambrequins
Lambrequins are a traditional way to decorate a cornice. Usually they come complete with curtains, but you can make a separate composition. As a rule, this is applique or embroidery on a bandeau, which can be ordered according to an individual project, bought ready-made, or made with your own hands.
Exclusive lambrequin - accent, decoration and highlight of the interior
Openwork lambrequins have become a real find for decorating cornices with your own hands. Accessories are sold in rolls, by the meter, and come in different widths. There are custom models for standard-length openings. The color palette is small, but thought out to suit all styles, so you can always choose a decorative tape, if not to match the color of the curtains, then to match the furniture, floors, and upholstery.
The photo shows a finished openwork lambrequin, suitable for decorating ceiling and wall cornices
Figures and accessories
A very original idea for decoration is to attach or place a figurine or soft toy on the cornice; multi-colored butterflies, birds, dragonflies, and bees look beautiful. The choice of accessories is huge, including stylized animals, ballerinas, and fairy-tale characters.
Accessories can be bought in a store, or made with your own hands, cut out of paper, strung with beads, crocheted
Decorating a cornice is an interesting and creative process; you can get by with ready-made solutions or show your creativity. Don't be afraid to experiment, but decor should be in moderation. Remember the combination of colors, the size of the cornice and the proportions of the room: in low rooms, the top decor is recommended in the color of the curtains; if the space has very high ceilings, then you can hang a wide lambrequin several tones darker than the main canvas.
Application of baguette in the interior
If you need to change the interior, then replacing such baguettes for curtains can be done without purchasing a new cornice. The main function of the curtain strip is related to closing the cornice, hooks and brackets that serve for arranging lighting. Illumination of curtains involves subdued light that spreads across the canvas, allowing you to create an intimate atmosphere. Having decorated the children's room with illuminated curtains, the light can be left on at night.
Interior decoration can be done using simple curtains, but there are no additional decorative overlays. Baguette cornices have additional functions that make these decorative elements universal:
- Details allow you to hide wall defects near window openings.
- The curtains are hung on hooks, and their movement occurs along hidden guides.
- The presence of a decorative overlay allows you to disguise defects made during the design of window openings.
- Baguette cornices can fit perfectly into some style decisions in the decoration, which adds significance to these decorative elements.
- Possibility to change the length of the cornice. At the same time, the presence of a baguette strip allows you to make the room quite cozy.
Modifications of such elements, available on the market in a wide range, can be made of metal, wood or plastic. This allows you to select options for any room. High ceilings in the rooms require the use of wide models of baguette cornices. Narrow elements are used to decorate small rooms. At the same time, the living space visually increases. The length of a standard baguette for curtains can be 3 m.
When choosing a pattern and relief, you should take into account the accuracy of joining the elements with each other. They are used not only to close the window opening, but also for the walls that form it. The cornice is positioned in such a way that when opening the curtains are completely removed from the window opening, placing them on the planes of the walls. The projections of the cornice on the sides can be masked with strips similar to a baguette. A semicircular, oval or rectangular protrusion may be provided at the end of the element.
Decorating ideas
Modern decorative materials are incredibly diverse, so there are a great many options for decorating curtains; it is hardly possible to cover them all in one article. However, we will tell you about the basic and simple techniques used to design a conceptual interior. Knowing these techniques, you can easily improvise and even create an original decoration for the cornice yourself.

It is quite possible to improve the window space on your own, without the involvement of designers. You can use ready-made solutions or make the decoration yourself. This is a very good decoration option if you bought a cornice unsuccessfully and it doesn’t fit with the main interior. Buying a new model is a more expensive pleasure, so in such cases they resort to various decorations. After all, decorative strips and ribbons are much cheaper, and they also allow you to decorate the interior much more interesting. Also, this type of finishing will help simply update the look of the old cornice. After all, it happens that, according to the technical characteristics, curtain hangers can still serve and serve, but the appearance loses its presentability, in such cases, the applied decor saves the situation. So let's get started!
Cornice moldings for interiors in different styles
Models can be divided into elite and simple. The latter are located under the ceilings of ordinary residential premises. They have a more modest appearance, since carved decorations are present on them in a minimal amount. Precious wood species are used to produce elite models. They are distinguished by rich carved decoration and inlay. They are often plated with gold, as well as silver or bronze plating. They are purchased for luxury mansions at a fairly high price.
By choosing plastic ceiling cornices, the interior can be decorated with imitation bronze, wood, marble, silver, gold, granite, etc. A flexible polystyrene ceiling cornice is both strong and durable. Latex compounds are used to color fasteners.
Wall cornices for an antique-style interior should imitate luxurious stucco molding. Ivory-colored strips can depict geometric shapes or natural motifs. Individual elements are sometimes painted copper or gold leaf.
The use of expensive materials in classic interior design involves the use of a rich ceiling cornice. A baguette in such a luxurious setting continues the greatness of this style trend. The planks can contain elements of stucco, imitate marble, granite, and various rocks. Expensive silk or leather are used to create fabric decorative elements.
Natural wooden baguette, made in warm colors, completely eliminates the presence of textured surfaces. A small drawing should be unobtrusive. For example, it could be a cell.
If the room has a country style, the baguette must be chosen from natural materials. The use of cornices and strips made of metal or plastic is not appropriate here. They are best suited for high-tech style. Decorative elements for curtains made of glass or polyurethane are ideal for this design direction. Colors can be white, beige, shiny, gray, silver.
Modern window decoration with baguettes for curtains is not only a profitable purchase, but also comfort in the home. A huge selection of models and colors makes it easy to choose the most suitable decorative element.

Hood for curtain rods: how to use and choose
The end of renovation or interior decoration1039 only seems like a good chance to relax, since many modern decoration elements or decorative elements appeared relatively recently and have not yet gained popularity among people. The curtain rod hood is one such innovation.
Varieties of cornices with baguette strips
There are three main types of baguette cornices: plastic, aluminum and wood.
We will tell you about the most popular product models below.
Colored laminated molding. It is a moisture-resistant material made from extruded polystyrene and has natural hardwood corners. With the help of colored molding, you can add sophistication and elegance to the interior of the room. The range of its application is not limited to apartments and rooms. Colored molding can be used to decorate the verandas of cottages, interior spaces, as well as balcony bays. The high-tech coating of the baguette allows it to be used in rooms with high humidity. Anti-corrosion treatment of metal elements does not allow moisture to destroy them. Molded baguette cornices with a pattern. Molded decor of a baguette cornice is currently a fashionable trend in the world of interior design. With its help, the interiors of apartments, cottages, dachas and country houses are decorated. It’s impossible to get used to this finish; it attracts the eye every time. Figure painting or relief is often used to decorate the outer part of the plank. The peculiarity of this type of plank is that, if desired, the product can be painted in any color and thereby change its external image to your liking. Wooden baguette cornices. Wooden cornices made from natural wood look especially luxurious. They are produced in a wide range, using various decorative elements: neat carvings, noble wood species, various ornaments and motifs. The most popular are wall cornices that have three guides. A lambrequin is usually hung on the front rail, a curtain on the middle rail, and tulle on the back rail. The external finishing of the planks is usually matched to the color of the furniture or parquet. Metal baguette cornices. They are widely used mainly for decorating the kitchen.
When choosing them, you need to pay attention to the color of the furniture fittings. The cornice-baguette should be in harmony with it and emphasize the beauty of the finish
Metal framing strips typically have no more than two guides. This is due to the fact that air permeability in the kitchen should be as high as possible, so you should not cover the windows with extra curtains. The most successful from a design point of view are the tulle/curtain and tulle/lambrequin compositions. Plastic baguette cornices. This is the cheapest type of cornices. When choosing, special attention should be paid to the material from which they are made. It must be environmentally friendly and harmless to others. If desired, the plastic profile can be painted in any color that will be in maximum harmony with the surrounding interior. In addition, plastic baguettes can be modeled to your liking, giving them round, oval and rectangular shapes. Such baguette designs are convenient for finishing rooms that have a window that is not entirely proportional or has an unconventional shape.

By giving preference to baguette planks, you are making the right choice. During their operation, you will definitely be convinced of their functionality and practicality.
The cost of baguette planks depends on the material from which they are made. In any case, you can always choose the molding cornice you need at an affordable price.
Purpose and features
Nowadays, you can easily create a harmonious interior in any way. To do this, you need to correctly select all the components of the situation. You can emphasize a particular style of the room with the help of beautiful cornices. You can add brighter colors to their design using a blend. The main purpose of these additions is to decorate the front part of the ceiling cornice.
Moreover, such inserts can well hide the unsightly hooks to which the curtains are attached. These decorative strips are present today on many profile cornices made of plastic and aluminum. As a rule, the hood is a thin plastic strip, trimmed on the outside with various materials. Such elements are equipped with special fasteners with which they are attached directly to the cornice.
Options for attaching curtains to curtain rods
A diverse range of ceiling and wall curtain rods implies the use of specific curtain mounts suitable for a particular curtain rod.
1. Ideally combined with baguette and profile ceiling cornices, less often with rod cornices:
special hooks that facilitate easy sliding along the cornice. To do this, fabric loops, decorated, for example, with buttons, or curtain tape with ready-made loops are sewn onto the curtains;
a variety of clamps fixed to the cornice in various ways.
2. For rod type cornices the following are used:
rings that come with the cornice. In this case, the rings are sewn to the curtains and then strung on a rod, or the curtains are hung on hooks attached to the rings;
clamps attached to rings. In this case, the rings are put on the rod, after which the curtains are attached to the cornice using clamps. The use of rings with clips allows you to easily adjust the length of the curtains;
The eyelets located in the upper part of the curtains serve not only as a way to attach curtains, but also perform a decorative function, completely or partially hiding the wall cornice. When sewing curtains, the eyelets are attached directly to the fabric, so when placed on a cornice, the curtains fall in voluminous, even folds;
loops on ties. The curtains are sewn on the front or back side and then tied to a rod. They look good in a child’s room, but moving/moving curtains with such fastenings is quite difficult;
magnets;
drawstring A strip is sewn at the top of the curtain, serving as one “large” loop for threading a rod through it. The simplest mounting option, which causes inconvenience during operation, since such curtains are difficult to move on the eaves.
3. Suitable for string cornices:
small rings attached to tulle or rings with clips;
magnets. They allow you to change the design of the curtains at any time, you just need to disconnect the magnets.
4. For any type of curtain rods:
Velcro loops. This type of fastening of curtains does not allow them to be moved along the cornice, therefore it is used only for fastening decorative curtains and lambrequins.
Based on the above, before you begin directly attaching the cornice, you need to decide on the choice of wall or ceiling cornice, as well as the type of fastening of curtains on the future cornice.
Installation of cornice strips. Features of curtain products. Fastening and making fabric strips
Both the overhang of the roof and the device for attaching curtains to window openings are called cornices. Oddly enough, both of the homonyms have a cornice strip. Each of them performs different functions. We will talk about what they are used for and how to install the cornice strip correctly.
Using a curtain rod you can improve the window space
Curtain rod curtain rod
As already noted, the cornice exists not only at the roof of the building, but also at window curtains. The latter are available in several versions depending on the material and method of fastening:
Item no. | Type of cornice
according to material | according to the method of fastening
1 | Plastic | Ceiling |
2 | Metal | Wall |
3 | Wood |
All cornices made from one material or another can be made with both methods of fastening. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. To improve the interior, a decorative cornice strip is often used.
Purpose of the cornice strip
Not all housewives know what a cornice strip is for. However, a comparison of interior solutions with cornices without an overlay and with it is clearly in favor of the former. The use of a strip allows standard curtain hangers to match a particular room decor style.
Types of wood planks
In addition, when changing the owner of an entire apartment or a separate room, to change the interior of the room, it is enough to leave the existing cornices and replace only the decorative trim.
Attaching the decorative strip
Currently, the most widespread are cornice strips made of plastic and fabric. For some species, changing decorative overlays is not difficult. The manufacturer makes special grooves into which flexible plastic strips are inserted.
A textile decorative overlay is also quite convenient, since you can attach a strip for a fabric cornice using the following devices:
- Double-sided tape , which is attached directly to the base with one adhesive layer, and the cornice strip is installed on the second side;
- Velcro fastener , which consists of two parts, one of which is equipped with plastic loops, and the second with soft hooks.
Fastening with tape
Note! Using any of these methods, it is not difficult not only to secure the fabric strip, but also to remove it if necessary to clean or replace it with a new one. The convenience of textile overlays lies in the fact that they can be made with your own hands from scrap materials with a minimum of tools.
Making a fabric strip
Decorative strips for ceiling or wall cornices can be made of durable, dense fabrics. They are better processed by cutting tools and retain the resulting shape. The price of such products, as a rule, is significantly lower than those offered by specialized companies.
To work you will need:
- A template for the future design, which will be located on a decorative fabric overlay;
- A piece of dense fabric made of natural or synthetic fibers, the length of which is equal to the length of the cornice, and the width is the desired value, which usually does not exceed 15-20 centimeters, depending on the height of the room, the area of the room and a number of other parameters;
- Small scissors with curved edges for ease of working with complex designs;
- A soldering iron with a sharp tip for cutting fabric by fusion while simultaneously processing the edges of design elements.
- Iron with steamer;
- Double-sided tape or Velcro, the length of which is equal to the cornice being decorated.
Making a fabric cornice strip with your own hands begins with selecting the appropriate pattern for the product. Print and transfer the design onto the fabric using carbon paper, after pinning it to the canvas from the wrong side.
Possible pattern options
If there are artificial fibers in the workpiece, it is convenient to carry out further work using a well-heated soldering iron with a sharp tip. In this case, the fabric curtain rod - made by yourself - will look neater, and the edges of the pattern will not crumble during use and cleaning. (See also the article Ceiling plinth: features.)
Velcro on decorative fabric strip
Fabric made from natural fibers will have to be cut with nail scissors. They have the necessary rounding of the working edges. Carefully pierce the design inside the pattern elements and cut along the contour. It is convenient to punch round holes with a special hole punch for fabric or leather.
After making the pattern, the cornice overlay must be ironed. Then, glue double-sided tape or sew one of the Velcro strips along the entire length of the fabric tape in the upper part from the inside out.
The second tape, if you use a fastener, will have to be glued to the curtain rod you are decorating.
You can transform the interior with your own hands and without special expenses.
Roof cornice and eaves strip
The roof crowns any building, and the durability of the structure itself depends on its quality and performance. The abundance of materials for the manufacture of roofs, their different costs, allows you to save significantly. But often novice builders try to reduce the construction budget by refusing to purchase roofing accessories.
Roof eaves strip
Not everyone can tell you that this is a roof eaves.
At the same time, it is an indispensable part of many types of roofs and performs a large number of functions:
- Directs moisture flowing from the roof to the elements of the drainage system;
- Prevents wetting of the lower wooden bars of the roof or sheet wood materials installed under soft tiles and other types of roofing materials;
- Protects the under-roof space from icing and destruction in winter.
Note! Roof eaves are usually made from galvanized sheet steel. Depending on the material of the gutters, an additional cover additionally coated with a multi-colored polymer material is used. In addition to different shades, fusing plastics allows you to obtain an additional protective layer.
Photo: cornice strip - a necessary part for any structure
Attaching the eaves roofing strip
The correct operation of the roof eaves strip depends on compliance with the technology of its fastening. To work, you will need metal screws and a screwdriver. It is better to choose galvanized or painted fasteners to match the color of the gutters.
Fastening the strip for the cornice is carried out after installing the drains in place before installing the roofing material. The extension is secured by screwing self-tapping screws through it into the roof sheathing. In this case, one of the edges should go into the drain. The second shelf is placed on the roof under the roofing material.
Roofing installation diagram
The eaves strip used to remove moisture from under the roof is called a drip line. The drip line is installed under the gutters. After attaching the drip line to the sheathing, an overlapping vapor barrier is installed on it, which prevents moisture condensation on the roof parts. Its absence can cause rapid wear of both the sheathing and the roof itself. Therefore, do not think, but install a drip line to protect the facade of your house!
Instead of an afterword
As part of the article, we not only looked at two completely different products, but also got acquainted with their purpose and installation. The video in this article contains some more information on the topic, in particular how to attach these products.
How to attach
When we settled on a specific type of curtains, with the material and design of the brackets, all that remained was to find out how to attach the ceiling cornice to the ceiling.
When choosing ceiling strips, the place for their fastening is prepared during the covering of the ceiling surface. The most difficult fasteners for cornices to the ceiling are considered to be for plasterboard coverings and tension fabrics.
So, for a plasterboard ceiling, a special groove is installed during installation. Then the bar will be fixed directly to the ceiling. You get an interesting solution when the curtain falls straight from the ceiling surface, since the profile is not visible.
The ceiling cornice is attached to the suspended ceiling after installing the timber under the canvas. Then the structure is fixed using self-tapping screws.
Nuances of fastening on concrete
If the profile needs to be attached to a concrete base, then markings are first made. Next, perform the following steps:
- use a hacksaw to cut the required length;
- plastic plugs are placed on the ends of the bus, which are supplied with the moldings;
- Holes are drilled in the middle of the plank. First, make a hole the size of the screw head, then use a thinner drill. Similar drillings are performed along the entire cornice strip. A step of 60 cm is observed. If the curtains are heavy, then the step distance needs to be made smaller:
- the profile is installed parallel to the window opening;
- through a hole drilled in the middle of the plank, make a mark on the ceiling surface;
- The hole for the dowel is made with a hammer drill.
The leveled cornice strip is fixed along its entire length using dowel nails.
How to glue a cornice?
Plaster and polystyrene foam cornices allow you to hide wiring and communications. The main thing is to know how to glue cornices to the ceiling so that the material is not damaged during operation.
To glue the cornice, you must perform the following steps:
- First the glue is prepared. For polystyrene foam cornices, a polymer adhesive composition based on acrylic is suitable. These are liquid nails. When choosing glue, you need to carefully study the instructions. The adhesive composition should not contain substances that corrode the foam cornice;
- Next, the working surface is inspected and prepared. If necessary, defects in the form of cracks and crevices are eliminated, and the ceiling surface is leveled;
- They start gluing from the corner, which is better visible. Before installing the cornice, its ends are trimmed to form a joint for installation in a corner;
- To give the cornice the desired angle, it is trimmed using a hacksaw and a miter box. A sharp knife is suitable for a product made of polystyrene foam;
- The fillet is inserted into the miter box with the side that will be fixed to the ceiling. Pressing the plinth tightly, the end of the cornice is trimmed;
- glue is applied from the back. The polystyrene foam plinth with glue applied is pressed to the attachment point with little force;
- As soon as the molding is fixed, you need to quickly remove the excess adhesive. You can remove the glue with a soft cloth;
- use the same method to glue the second strip of the element into the corner;
- each subsequent element of the ceiling dumbbell is connected to the previous one;
- The joints are sealed after the glue has hardened. A sealant is used for this purpose.
After installing all the foam panels, they are painted.
Tip: in places where corner elements join, it is better to attach long cornices. Thus, the joints will be almost invisible.
How to decide on sizes
If you want the curtains to be from wall to wall, then the cornice should be almost the same length. It can be 10 cm shorter, but it can be close. If you are only going to close the window, then the length of the cornice should be at least 50 cm greater than the width of the window opening. More is possible, but less is not advisable.
In general, everyone determines the length for themselves. You can proceed from the following considerations:
- If the window is large and there is more than enough light in the room, you can take a cornice of minimum length: the width of the window opening + 40 cm (20 cm on each side). In this case, open curtains will slightly block the window.
The minimum distance from the edge of the window opening is 20 cm - If the window is already small and faces north, then it is better to leave at least 30 cm on the sides. In this case, even thick curtains in the assembled state will fit on the side of the window.
- Two windows on one wall with a small partition. It is best to make one long curtain holder. It will look much more modern.
There is one note that should be taken into account when choosing the length of the ceiling cornice. It must be secured so that the farthest row of curtains (tulle) does not touch the heating radiators. This is worth considering, because not all of our rooms have ideal geometry.
BASE FOR FIXING THE CORNICE
The installation technology provides that when decorating the upper part of the walls, the plinth is attached with glue in two perpendicular planes: to the wall and the ceiling. But in order to cover the curtain rod with it, you need to create a vertical base on the ceiling. In shape it can be a straight base or a more complex U-shaped one, enclosing the cornice and the sides. In any case, to create it, you can use either sheet material (plasterboard, plywood) by attaching it to connecting corners, or an aluminum corner. The cross-sectional dimensions of the latter are very different, there are, for example, unequal flanges 150 x DO, 200 x x 20 mm, which allow you to attach even a high ceiling plinth at the minimum permissible distance to the curtain rod.
NICHE USING GYPSUM CARDBOARD F The easiest way is to create a niche using a false beam made of gypsum plasterboard (a); lowering the ceiling in the entire room (6) makes sense only if you need to hide communications, for example ventilation ducts 1 - curtain rod; 2 - drywall; 3 — guide profile; 4 - ceiling profile; 5 - polymer cornice; 6 — suspension
To reliably fix linear products to a concrete ceiling, it is recommended to use dowel plugs, which are a plastic sleeve with stiffening ribs and “whiskers”. When the screw is screwed in, the dowel-plug is deformed, creating a reliable fastening. Under them, holes are drilled in the ceiling slab in increments of 0.9-1.2 m.
