By location

There are built-in and overhead structures. In the first case, the fastening is carried out from the inside of the opening, and the roller shutters themselves can be located either inside or outside. Plus - a high degree of protection, minus - the structure can close part of the opening.

The advantages of invoices are ease of installation, do not interfere with the penetration of light and small size. The downside is a slight protrusion from the wall.

By profile type

Foam-filled sheets are made from a non-extruded profile. Soft foam filling inside. Pros :

Installation types

Installation can be overhead or built-in. Each type has its own advantages and is selected depending on the characteristics of the house. Surface-mounted installation is distinguished from built-in installation by protruding elements that can spoil the appearance of the facade.

If the house is at the initial stage of construction or design work has just begun, then experts advise considering installing a hidden box. It is placed in a niche above the opening, which is prepared in advance. This will create the impression that the roller shutters are lowering straight from the wall.

Measuring the opening

We recommend delegating the task of measuring the opening to professionals. Ultimately, this will be cheaper than correcting mistakes made at this stage if you measure the opening yourself. The measurer will not only accurately determine the dimensions of the future canvas, but will also select the appropriate type of installation, show samples of profiles, and also answer all questions.

At the same time, in order to understand what budget you need to plan for the purchase, you can make preliminary measurements yourself. To do this, measure the height and width of the opening at 3 different points - two extreme and one central. Further, depending on the type of installation, either the largest value (overhead) or the smallest (built-in) is taken as the base, from which 5 mm are subtracted.

During measurements, an important point that cannot be ignored is the difference in the diagonals of the opening. It should not be more than 5 mm:

The deviation from the vertical should not be more than 1.5 mm per 1 m and 5 mm per total opening height.
The deviation from the horizontal should be no more than 5 mm.

A number of other nuances. If you choose surface mounting, make sure that the height of the jumper is enough to accommodate the box. In the case of built-in installation, you need to check whether the opening depth is sufficient to accommodate the box.

At the same stage, electricity is supplied for the roller shutter automation (if the control is automatic and not manual). It is better to understand in advance which side of the roller shutter or box - the upper part - the wire will be connected to. Otherwise, you will then have to lay it through the entire box.

How much motor power is required depends on the size of the web and its weight (in turn, depends on the profile). For roller shutters, 200-300 W is usually enough for one window. If you have non-standard size roller shutters or grilles, you may need a motor with a power of more than 300-350 watts.

Requirements in regulatory documents

The main requirements are set out in:

GOST R 54863-2011. The standard is devoted to indicators of additional thermal resistance of products.
GOST R 51222-98. "Blinds (roller shutters)." The text contains a list of the main GOSTs for each product parameter - classification, climatic design, protective characteristics.
GOST R 52503-2005. Describes test methods for roller shutter resistance to burglary and bullet resistance.
GOST R 52502-2012. The document contains a detailed description of the general technical conditions for each criterion.

In addition, there is:

SNiP 2.01.07-85 with a description of 8 wind regions and an indication of wind pressure values for each of them.
EN 13659 is a European standard that describes the classes of roller shutters for resistance to wind loads.

Based on regulatory documents, the main requirements for products are:

Additional window heat transfer resistance of at least 20%.
This is due to the thermal conductivity parameters of roller shutters. The effect of roller shutters can be compared to an additional camera in a double-glazed window. If the product is installed on windows with double-glazed windows, then in winter the outer glass will be 25% warmer. For example, the external temperature is -25°C. In this case, the external glass without roller shutters is cooled to +11°C, with roller shutters to +15°C. This reduces heating costs.
Resistance to load when exposed to the canvas, or rather, its center. The shutters must withstand a 20 J impact load from a 2 kg solid body.
Resistance to wind load. The values of resistance classes are indicated in a special table.
Burglary resistance (by class). Each of them must correspond to one of the points in the special table.
Bulletproof. Protection classes are indicated in the table GOST R 51222-98.

Design requirements:

To ensure protection against penetration into premises, the dimensions of the roller shutters must correspond to the dimensions of the opening. Permissible deviations - no more than 0.1%.
It is mandatory to secure the rolled sheet with a bolt.
There should be no unauthorized unwinding or twisting of the fabric.
The presence of burrs and sharp edges on the elements of roller shutters is not allowed.
Products must demonstrate a trouble-free operating life of 5000 cycles when reaching the extreme points of opening or closing.

All materials used must comply with the requirements for them, and the shutter manufacturer must have all the relevant documents.

The width and height are measured at three points.
The width is measured alternately on the left side of the opening, then on the right and middle.
The height is measured alternately at the bottom of the opening, then at the top and middle.
Diagonals are measured to ensure that the opening is the correct rectangular shape. A difference of more than 10 mm is not allowed.

In fact, there are no ideal openings. Everywhere there are deviations in height and width, which must be taken into account if you want the roller shutter to fit exactly into the opening.

What to do if the roller shutters don't fit

The height turned out to be greater than necessary. Using a hacksaw, reduce the length of the guides and remove one or more slats.
The height turned out to be less than necessary. This problem is rare. If the built-in installation method was chosen, a gap will appear between the opening and the top of the box. You can, of course, leave it this way, but to fully protect the house it is better to fix it by carrying out additional work. It will be necessary to order and install additional slats and longer guides. If this problem occurs during overhead installation, the box will cover part of the window opening.
When installed in an opening, the width is less than necessary. It can be corrected by installing additional inserts between the opening and the guides. Finishing is being done. Note that because of this, the dimensions of the opening will become smaller.
For external installation, the width is less than necessary. In this case, nothing can be fixed. The entire structure will have to be reordered.
The width is larger than necessary. It's not scary if the installation is invoice. When open, the guides will be a little further from the opening, but when closed, no one will understand how big the opening is.

If the installation is built-in, it will take 1-2 hours to fix. You will need to shorten the roller shutter box and slats to the required width. Don’t worry about how the whole structure will look - the box will be covered by a side cover, the edges of the lamellas will hide the guides.
