Installation location and window dimensions
The maximum permissible width of a dormer window should be 80 - 120 mm less than the opening between the rafters. If the rafter legs are located with a small step, install two windows in adjacent niches or through one.
The installation height of the window is determined based on the method of opening it and the angle of inclination of the roof. In steep roofs it is better to place it in the lower part, in flat roofs - in the upper part. Windows with lower fittings are installed at a height of 1200 - 1300 mm, with upper ones - at a height of 1000 - 1100 mm.
Work order
The installation of a roof window should begin after the installation of the roofing pie, but before the interior decoration of the room is completed.
First of all, the boundaries of the future opening should be marked with a marker on the waterproofing film. In this case, at least 40 mm should be set back from each rafter leg, and if possible - 60 mm or more.
When the boundaries of the installation are drawn, 200 mm are retreated from them and only now a cutout is made. Thus, on each side of the hole there remains a 20-centimeter reserve of waterproofing under the metal tile. It should be bent inside the room.
Next, you need to make an opening in the roofing material. To do this, it is cut through. The sheathing is cut so that the cut line is 20 mm from the side surface of the rafters.
Securing the mounting beam
The mounting beam is made from the same board from which the roof rafters are made. It is attached between the rafters under the window opening, and the gap between the beam and the sheathing should be 80 - 100 mm.
The mounting beam must occupy a strictly horizontal position, so the correct installation is controlled using a building level.
After securing the timber to it using a stapler, the lower edge of the waterproofing film is nailed to it.
Before you begin installing the frame, the side edges of the waterproofing film should be pulled out, and its upper edge should be stapled to the sheathing above the opening.
The frame is freed from the sash and flashing, after which a piece of mineral wool insulation is nailed to its upper part with a stapler. A fragment of heat insulator intended for insulating the lower part of the window must be secured to the mounting beam. Now the frame can be installed in the opening, following the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
Tip: When installing the frame, leave the top brackets slightly loose. In the future, this will make it possible to correct its position.
After installing the frame, the insulation attached to the mounting beam must be pressed tightly against the opening and secured with a stapler.
Waterproofing a Velux window
Installation of a Velux roof window is unthinkable without installing waterproofing and flashing. They prevent possible leaks and give the window opening a finished look. First, a waterproofing apron is installed. Its inner side is stapled to the outer side of the frame. The remaining surface of this contour is straightened out and attached to the roof sheathing. A drainage gutter is installed above the frame at a slight angle. If water accidentally gets on the roof waterproofing, it will divert it away from the window opening, preventing moisture from entering the room.
Installation of a waterproofing apron
Then comes flashing for high-profile roofing materials. It consists of top and bottom frames and side trims. The flexible seal of the lower part of the flashing allows you to repeat any wave pattern of the metal tile and ensure a tight fit, under which neither snow nor water will get under. The seal is pressed by hand, the flashing is removed and its lower part is slightly bent. Then the flashing is installed in the same place and secured to the frame. The edge of the frame is tapped with a rubber mallet for closer contact with the coating.
And one more nuance. The edges of the protruding waves of the tiles are cut at an angle of 45⁰ so that the porous bottom can fit more evenly. This moment is quite clearly visible in the photograph.
On the left in the photo, under the corrugation of the flashing, you can see the top of the wave cut at an angle
The side covers are installed quite easily thanks to special connections. The edges that go under the metal tiles are bent upward. The design of the connection with the lower flashing does not allow moisture to penetrate to the window. It must be remembered that there are right and left side pads.
After installing the sidewalls, it’s time for the top flashing. The designs of the frames may vary, so before installation you should carefully study the instructions supplied with the accessory. The installed flashing protects the frame from precipitation and gives the product a finished look. Lastly, the outer roofing sheets are secured in the places where they were previously secured.

As a result, the roof may take the same appearance as in the photo.
installation of a Velux roof window into a finished metal roof. detailed instructions
Pre-cut roof waterproofing is placed under it. If everything is done correctly, then in rainy weather, water from the section of the roof located above the opening will flow from the waterproofing into the gutter without falling on the window.
Next, the supplied waterproofing apron is placed around the window.
Tip: use only those accessories that are designed specifically for your window model. Even minor inconsistencies, unnoticeable at first glance, can lead to leaks in the future.
The apron is attached to the frame with a stapler, then it is brought inside the attic and attached in the same way to the rafters, mounting beam and sheathing. The top edge of the waterproofing apron should be under the drainage gutter.
The finishing touch is to restore the roofing at the bottom of the window.
Installation of the flashing begins with the installation of the lower corrugated apron, which is attached around it after the roof has been covered with metal tiles. Then the same apron is installed on top and only then on the sides. When everything is ready, the covers are attached to the window. All flashing elements should be attached to the sheathing and frame.
This operation largely depends on the design of the window and frame, so its implementation should be coordinated as closely as possible with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Tip: to seal the gaps between the frame and the opening, use only special roofing sealants. Conventional polyurethane foam quickly breaks down under the influence of UV radiation, thereby losing its waterproofing qualities.
The circulation of warm air in the window area depends on the correct installation of slopes inside the attic.
The lower slope should be positioned vertically, that is, perpendicular to the floor. The top one is horizontal.
If the technology is violated, the window will not be blown with a stream of warm air, which will lead to the formation of condensation on the glass. After installation, the slopes should be properly insulated.
Advice: insulation of slopes should be quite effective; it is best to use a good layer of mineral wool for this. Novice craftsmen often underestimate this point, preferring to make do with materials such as penofol. This can also trigger the process of moisture condensation on the surface of the slopes.
As you can see, installing a roof window does not involve any highly complex operations. The main rules remain the same: thoroughness, accuracy, lack of haste and compliance with all points of the instructions. Stick to them, and your attic will always have enough light, warmth, and therefore comfort.

Attic rooms allow the most efficient use of living space, which is why more and more often houses are equipped with rooms in the attic. Like any other living space, the attic needs a sufficient flow of light, which cannot be provided by electric lighting alone. Therefore, they are equipped with windows that have a certain specificity in design, due to the distinctive features of the structure of the attic itself.
The most popular manufacturers of attic windows are Velux, Roto and Fakro roof windows. The sizes and design of windows are selected individually, based on the layout and needs of the attic. Windows are available in various modifications; according to the type of installation, they are divided into:
- Vertical windows are the simplest modification, which are practically no different from windows in other rooms. They are mounted in the front part of the attic, where the wall is located at a right angle or in a slope. Installation of Fakro or Velux roof windows in a slope at right angles is carried out by adding a small additional structure in the form of a birdhouse-like house. Such windows allow you to slightly increase the area of the room, but at the same time let in a small amount of light.
- Sloping windows. Mounted at the same angle with the roof slope. This design lets in more light and has a variety of opening methods. Not only the classic opening of the sash horizontally and vertically, but also the turning of the sash by 180° and much more.
The following classification divides Fakro and Velux roof windows according to features in their design, which also affect the installation process:
- Windows have a standard shape - square or rectangle. They are the most common; in their design they have a frame and a blind or opening sash. The most popular are designs with an opening sash; Velux or Fakro roof windows without the function of opening the sash must be ordered separately.
- Windows transforming into a balcony. This design consists of an inclined frame installed in the slope, the second frame is installed on the side or below. One door opens up, and the second opens to the side or down, forming a small loggia.
- An additional element at the bottom of the window. The opening sash is equipped with a small blind element at the bottom. This addition is used when the size of the slope is not large enough to install two openings, and the lighting from one window is not enough for the entire attic.
- Extensions at the top of the frame. They are made round or triangular. This extension decorates the window and makes it look like a medieval battlement.
- Cornice window. It is installed in rooms with a high wall, in which the view through the inclined frame is limited. The inclined design is complemented by an opening vertical sash.
- Light tunnel. This design does not occur very often and is very specific. Installed in places where the slope does not have direct contact with the room. The design is a window through which there is a tunnel or pipe with a hole in the place that needs to be illuminated. A light-diffusing lamp is installed at the end of the tunnel.
Dormer windows take on a much greater impact than ordinary openings in walls. They are made from special materials that are suitable for use in these conditions. The installation of roof windows also has its differences. The price of these products also differs from the cost of conventional double-glazed windows, this is due to their increased strength and design features. For example, a design with a rotating sash has a higher price than a window with a regular sash movement mode. Based on the capabilities of sash movement, windows are divided into:
- With a centrally located pivot axis that rotates 180°.
- With a rising pivot that opens 2/3 from the bottom edge of the frame.
- With a combined opening axis that allows you to turn or lift the sash.
- With a side-mounted axle that functions as standard.
- With a bottom-mounted axle that moves forward.
- Remote controlled windows. Necessary if they are located in an area that is difficult to reach.
Dormer window systems are a complex structure that can withstand significant loads. This structure consists of a frame, sash and fittings that rotate the sash and fix it. The price for Fakro company products and Velux roof windows is determined by these factors, as well as the presence of additional installation elements.
Installation of Velux and Fakro roof windows is carried out with the addition of a design apron for protection against moisture and steam, a gutter for water drainage, temperature-resistant material, a protective flashing and internal slopes. These elements complement the installation kit at the request of the ordering person. In general, the installation price for Velux windows and Fakro roof windows varies, depending on the number of basic and additional elements installed. Self-installation of windows significantly reduces the cost of all work.
Do-it-yourself installation of roof windows begins with choosing the installation location. It is selected according to the following rules:
- The window sizes are selected based on the size of the attic and the gap between the rafters. When making an opening, it is not recommended to violate the integrity of the rafters; an opening is made between them.
- The optimal window area is 10% of the total area of the room. The side edges of the frame are mounted at a distance of 4-6 cm from the rafters. If the gap between the beams does not allow installing a window of sufficient size, an additional opening is made.
- The installation height is selected according to the slope of the roof. At large angles, openings are made at the bottom, at flat ones at the top. The position of the handle is also taken into account; if it is attached at the top, the window is installed at a height of 100-110 cm, the lower position of the handle involves installing the window at a height of 120-130 cm.
- The installation of a window depends on the material of the roof covering; there are no cuts in ceramic tiles, the window is located above a row of covering. Openings are cut in sheet material at any convenient height.
- Methods of movement of the sash are selected based on personal preferences and desires.
After determining the installation location and dimensions of the structure, the selected areas are marked on the internal wall. To install roof windows from Fakro, Velux or another manufacturer, it is recommended to select all components from one model line.
Let's consider installing Fakro or Velux roof windows on an already built roof in a room with unfinished walls. In this situation, a waterproofing film has already been placed on the inner surface of the wall, and the area for installation is marked on it. The gap left from the frame to the rafters is 2-3 cm, installation is carried out on the lower mounting beam. When marking the bottom line, leave 9 cm for profile roofing materials; for flat roofing materials, leave 4-6 cm. Along the top line of the window, leave 9-15 cm up. Then proceed like this:
- According to the marks, a cut is made in the waterproofing layer, retreating 20 cm on each side. The remaining areas are wrapped inside the room, and the roofing material is removed.
- Stepping back 2 cm from the rafters, cut off the lattice.
- The mounting beam is fixed along the bottom line; it is selected from 50 mm in thickness. The timber is fixed at a distance of 8-10 cm from the sheathing. Check the horizontal position of the timber using a building level.
- The lower edge of the waterproofing material is attached to the beam with a stapler. The upper edges are attached to the top sheathing, the side edges extend outward.
When installing the frame, you must follow the installation instructions for skylights from the manufacturer whose products were purchased. Windows from different brands have design differences. Some companies make rectangular brackets that attach to the rafters, while others offer products with angle brackets that attach to the rafters and sheathing. In all brands, the frame is fastened to the window in different positions. For example, for Fakro roof windows, the instructions describe two grooves marked V and N, which determine the seating depth of the frame. This indicator varies with different types of roofing and flashings. In general, the installation looks like this:
- The sash is removed before installation; this process is described in detail in the instructions for the window. The flashing is also removed; at the initial stage, only one frame is mounted.
- The brackets are mounted in the designated places on the frame. Thermal insulation is attached to the top of the window and secured with a stapler.
- Heat-insulating material is laid on the mounting beam, pressed down with a frame and fixed.
- The brackets in the lower part are fixed firmly, but the upper ones are not completely fixed, since the frame still needs to be leveled. Mount the sash and check the smoothness of its movement. If there are distortions, adjust the level using the upper mount. A fully fixed window must be level; the gaps on the sash should not vary. If you do not adjust the window at this stage, then it will no longer be possible to correct the misalignment.
- The installation of roof windows is completed at this stage by tightening all fasteners until they stop. Side fastening systems are also installed to the rafters. Side insulation is attached to the window, and insulation is laid on the sides.
A waterproofing apron is included with almost all brands of windows, this applies to Farko designs and Velux roof windows. Installation of waterproofing material begins after installation of the window base. If this material was not included in the kit, then it is purchased and manufactured independently. The cost of installing roof windows in this case will increase slightly. The process of installing waterproofing material looks like this:
- A section of sheathing is cut out along the top line of the opening; its width is measured according to the dimensions of the drainage gutter.
- The waterproofing film is cut along the opening. Slide the drainage gutter under the film and install it in the gap between the sheathing. In this design, water will flow not onto the window, but into the gutter.
- The apron is unpacked, laid out and its location is marked so that both the window and the roof are protected from moisture penetration. The apron is fastened with a stapler, the fastening points are frame, mounting beam, rafters, top sheathing. The apron is tucked under the sheathing, along the top line it is brought under the drainage gutter.
- After fastening the apron, the roof at the bottom of the opening is mounted again.
After laying the apron, the technology for installing dormer windows involves fastening the flashing. The process starts at the bottom and then moves up, the algorithm looks like this:
- At the first stage, the lower corrugated apron is laid, then the parts on the sides and the top, the last ones are installed on the windows.
- In these works, it is necessary to strictly follow the information in the instructions, since each manufacturer has its own distinctive points. This also applies to Fakro and Velux products; in some cases, roof windows are installed using a sealant. For example, Roto windows are equipped with a seal, under which you need to insert a flashing and fix it there. Fakro windows do not have such an addition; the frame is fixed on the frame, and is covered on top with special elements that mask the joints and connections.
- The flashings are joined and securely fixed to the frame and sheathing.
- The lower apron is fixed at the top of the roof.
- Upon completion of the work, a special element is attached to the flashing, creating a tight seal between the window and the roof.
The manufacture of the window opening in the attic is completed, followed by finishing work and equipping the window with sun protection elements. The cost of installing a turnkey roof window also depends on what materials are chosen for this. When sealing joints, do not use polyurethane foam, but purchase specialized sealants. Slopes for attic windows also have their own distinctive features; the lower part of the slope is always installed vertically, and the upper part horizontally. This design will ensure optimal movement of warm flow from heating devices. As a result, condensation will not form on the glass.
Installation of a roof window, video tutorial:
Owners who want to turn the attic above the bathhouse into a functional living space need to take care of the free flow of fresh air and daylight. These problems can be solved by installing roof windows, the rules of which differ from the standard technology for installing façade analogues. If the owner of the bathhouse decides to equip the slopes with windows rather than the gables, the structure with a light-conducting element should become part of a multi-layer roofing system. The window must not only be reliably strengthened, but also ensure that the technical characteristics of the roof are preserved, which guarantees a competent installation.
Constructed according to the rules, the complex “pie” of the roof retains heat, does not accumulate condensation on the surface, and serves for a long time thanks to perfectly functioning under-roof ventilation. Equivalent responsibilities are placed on the “fragile shoulders” of skylights, which, moreover, must open freely and not cause difficulty in closing. Windows, along with the roofing system, will have to repel atmospheric attacks. Therefore, it is recommended to equip attics with special structures:
- with tempered glass or triplex glass;
- with an energy-saving light-transmitting element;
- with hermetic seals and linings;
- with a durable frame, protected from constant exposure to moisture and UV rays;
- with devices that provide shading, easy operation, ventilation in summer and winter, protection from insects and dust particles.
If you want to look at projects of bathhouses with an attic, we recommend that you read the article https://stroy-banya.com/proekty/proekty-ban-s-mansardoj.html
It is desirable that using and caring for them should not be difficult, so that fogging and damp finishes do not irritate the owners. All requirements will be satisfied by the precise selection and impeccable installation of roof windows, carried out in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and generally accepted technological standards.
Installation without calculations is money down the drain. To avoid wasting money, you first need to calculate everything, select windows in accordance with the tasks being solved and the type of roofing material, and determine the location for their installation.
The formula is extremely simple, the result depends on the floor area. Every 10 m² must be illuminated by 1 m² of glazing, regardless of the window size. There is a nuance that slightly adjusts the amount of light coming through the attic window. The higher the window opening, the more daylight passes through it. However, a too high location will interfere with admiring the surrounding nature and such an installation is more suitable for flat roofs with slope angles of 15-20º.
Unwritten laws and architectural aesthetics force roofs with steep slopes to be equipped with windows, the lower line of which is at an average level of 1.00 to 1.40 m. The lower limit is considered to be 0.80 m, the upper limit is 1.90 m. However, the height of the location is practically does not affect the size of roof windows. In any case, the total area of elements transmitting light should be calculated using the above formula, and the owner will want one, four or two windows - a choice based on personal preferences.
The buyer is now offered a lot of different designs with numerous functions, which are not worth listing in this article. The difference is not only in dimensions, but also in the mechanisms of action, in the location of the rotary axis and the window handle. The last characteristic affects the installation height of the window in the attic. The handle is too high - it’s inconvenient to open if the window is not supplied with a remote control; too low - it’s dangerous if children are resting in the sauna attic. In addition to the handle, as a point of application of constant forces, the type of roofing material influences the choice of window. The higher its relief, the greater the height of the outer window frame should be. Products bearing the Fakro brand, for example, have special markings according to which windows are selected for attics with tiles, ondulin, metal profiles or smooth roll coverings.
Typically, the factory equipment includes fasteners, mounting angles, a waterproofing apron with a vapor-removing effect, a special sealant and adhesive tape. Of course, it is better to purchase a complete kit with all the necessary accessories for installation. However, in the absence of insulation, waterproofing and a corrugated vapor barrier membrane, all this can be purchased separately or made from materials offered by hardware stores.
Important! The installation of a drainage gutter above the top line of the attic window is a mandatory condition. If it is not included in the kit, you can make a gutter from a piece of waterproofing material folded in half.
It is difficult to say what the owner of a bathhouse who wants to install attic windows with his own hands needs to decide initially. Determination of the installation location should be carried out in parallel with the selection of the optimal design. More precisely, these issues are resolved together.
Location is an important factor that determines the service life of the entire roof, interior decoration and aesthetic properties of the building. Before figuring out how to install a roof window, you should find the optimal location for its installation.
Valuable professional advice. There is no need to arrange window openings:
- on the slopes of the valley, since sediment will accumulate in the internal corners formed by it;
- near ventilation vents and chimneys, the operation of which will cause the formation of condensation;
- near junctions with horizontal walls due to accumulation of precipitation and possible shading.
Professionals advise not to get carried away with the close proximity of any components of the roofing system.
The height limits of the opening for the attic window have already been mentioned. There are no clear technical instructions on this matter, so it is impossible to say for sure what has a greater impact on the choice.
- Definitely the type of roofing material. Any soft rolled variety can be cut anywhere. Shingles are not allowed! It must be positioned so that the bottom line of the window structure is located above a row of “uncut” whole shingles.
Attention. If it is not possible to create an opening over a row of solid tiles, they will have to be disassembled, and after installation, cut or shaped elements should be laid on top of the window casing.
- A significant criterion is the pitch of the rafters. It is advisable not to violate the integrity of the rafter system. It is recommended to buy windows whose size allows them to be freely installed between two adjacent rafters with a margin of 7-10 cm. The margin is necessary for laying the thermal insulation layer. If the pitch of the rafter system is not sufficient to install a large window, it is better to purchase and install two or three small ones side by side.
Note. If it is necessary to remove part of the rafters to install a window, a horizontal beam is installed in the window opening to increase the strength of the rafter structure.
- Top or bottom handle. Dormer windows with upper handles are installed at a height of up to 1.10 m, with lower handles - at a height of up to 1.70 m.
The owner choosing a place for installation must take into account that a heating device must be installed under the glazed structure, because rational heating of roof windows will prevent the formation of condensation. This factor also affects the installation height. And one more thing: the buyer of windows with remote control needs to worry about cable routing.
The entire process of installing a window in the attic can be divided into a number of technological stages:
- preparing the opening for the window to be installed;
- installation of a frame with a previously dismantled double-glazed window;
- laying insulating material, waterproofing;
- attaching a factory gutter above the top line of the window structure or constructing it from a piece of waterproofing;
- installation and fastening of flashing parts;
- returning the dismantled glass unit to its place in the reverse order;
- interior finishing with installation of vapor barrier and construction of slopes.
The manufacturers' instructions describe in detail the installation of skylights: a bathhouse owner who has no experience in this field can carry out the installation with his own hands, strictly following the instructions. We will only note the key points that may be left unattended. But taking them into account is a guarantee of high-quality installation.
- Since thermal insulation material is to be laid between the frame and the opening along the entire perimeter, an allowance of 2-3.5 cm should be left on each side of the rectangle, depending on the thickness and density of the insulation.
- A technological gap must be left between the bottom line of the window structure and the roofing material, the size of which depends on the type of roofing. For an attic with tiles, for example, you need to leave 9 cm.
- 4-10 cm are left between the upper mounting beam and the roofing material. They are necessary so that the window does not “warp” in the event of shrinkage of the wooden rafter structure.
- The window frame will be attached to the rafters or to special slats fixed level in a strictly horizontal direction. The slats are made from timber with dimensions equal to the sheathing timber.
- On the inside, an outline is drawn along the waterproofing or existing finishing according to the calculated distances.
- Waterproofing is not cut along the contour of the window! You need to cut it with a kind of “envelope” so that there are overlaps of 20-25 cm. The overlaps are then turned outward, stapled to the frame or to the sheathing, and the excess is cut off. A waterproofing apron will be placed on top of them so that the insulating shell is completely sealed.
Mounting brackets are attached to the frame as specified by the manufacturer. The window manufacturer Fakro recommends dismantling the double-glazed window before fixing the brackets; the manufacturer Velux recommends removing the double-glazed window after attaching the brackets and “fitting” the frame into the opening. It is more convenient to lay thermal insulation material along the top and bottom lines of the window system and secure it with a stapler before installing the frame in the prepared opening.
Advice. Thermal insulation can be laid in the opening before installing the frame and attached to the upper and lower mounting beams.
- The lower brackets are fastened firmly, but the screws of the upper brackets are not fully tightened. A slight play is necessary for adjustment.
- It is during this period that with a level , and adjustments are made using plastic corners if deviations are detected. Experts advise temporarily putting the sash in place to check how it will fit against the frame. There is no need to be lazy; after fixing the salary, it will no longer be possible to correct shortcomings and serious mistakes.
- The distances between the opening and the frame on the left and right should be equal.
- After adjustment, all fasteners can be tightened tightly, a waterproofing apron can be laid around the frame, and thermal insulation can be stapled along the side lines of the frame.
To install a drainage gutter in the sheathing above the window, you need to cut two pieces, the size of which is equal to the height of the drainage device, and cut a piece of waterproofing to these dimensions. The gutter must be placed under the cut-out section of waterproofing and attached to the sheathing. Note. The condensate drainage gutter is placed at an angle so that moisture does not linger, but spontaneously flows into the ventilation gap of the roof.
The penultimate touch is that the installation of the salary must strictly comply with the manufacturer’s instructions. The general rule: always start with fastening the lower element, and all parts of the flashing are placed under the elastic seal. Then, in the reverse order of dismantling, they put the frame in place. A vapor barrier material is laid on the inside and the roof window is decorated by installing slopes.
Important. The plane of the lower slope must be installed strictly horizontally, that is, perpendicular to the floor surface. The top slope must be perfectly vertical.
This is not a complete, but rather “expanded” list of nuances according to which the installation of roof windows is carried out. More precisely, the article is a list of general recommendations that must be followed regardless of the specific features of window designs from a particular manufacturer. The strict rule is to comply with the installation technology supplied with the product. It will help the independent installer to eliminate errors, and will allow the service customer to competently control the process.
Installation of roof windows in metal tiles: steps and tips
1. Selecting a window and location for installation 2. Preparing the site 3. Installing the frame, leveling it 4. Creating waterproofing around the window 5. Installing the flashing
It should be admitted that installing a roof window is not an entirely simple matter. Therefore, if you have no experience in construction, it is better to entrust the installation of windows to specialists. It is preferable to order installation from the manufacturer - in this case, you can be sure that the work will be completed quickly and efficiently. The cost of installation depends on whether the roofing work is completed and the finishing is done. If interior work has not yet been carried out and roofing material has not been laid, installing windows will cost less.
If you have practical experience in the field of construction and repair, it is also possible to install roof windows yourself. The operating technology is common to windows from different manufacturers.
Installing the outer box
After the window openings are cut, you need to begin installing the outer box. To do this, along the entire perimeter you need to lay strips of cut foam insulation - a heat-insulating material, which is attached using double-sided adhesive tape and paper clips.
After this, insert the window, previously freed from the sashes, into the prepared opening. Having secured the frame with clamps, you should check its horizontal and vertical position, and then you need to insert the sash into it to make sure that the structure is working. If there are no defects, the frame should be securely fastened using self-tapping screws.
Preparing the site
As for how to properly install a roof window, it is better to do this before finishing the interior of the room. The roof may already be ready. First, from the inside of the room, they mark on the waterproofing film where the window will be located. The distance on the sides from the rafters on the right and left should be 4-6 centimeters. Install the window on the lower mounting beam or rafters. Then mark the lower border of the window, retreating 4-6 centimeters for flat roofing materials and 9 for profiled ones. Then mark the top point, putting another 9-15 centimeters on top.
When cutting out waterproofing material, leave a margin of 20 centimeters on all sides. The rest of the linen is wrapped inside the room. The roof covering is removed or cut out, and, stepping back 2 centimeters from the rafters, the sheathing is cut off.
Before installing the roof window, a mounting beam with a thickness of 50 mm is nailed down below; the distance to the sheathing should be 8-10 cm. Using a level, the beam is set strictly horizontally. The lower edge of the waterproofing is attached to the mounting beam with a stapler, and the upper edge is attached to the sheathing above. The side edges are pulled outward.

Frame installation and alignment
The delivery set indicates how the roof windows should be installed - instructions are provided by the manufacturer. It must be followed, since the products of different manufacturing companies differ. For example, the brackets can be rectangular and attached only to the rafters, or coal, which are mounted both to the sheathing and to the rafters, and they are also fixed to the window frame in different positions (for more details: “Installation and installation of roof windows in the roof - sequence of work "). Thus, although the installation of windows from different manufacturers is similar in general terms, it has its own characteristics.
For ease of installation, it is better to remove the sash. How to do this is written in the instructions. If there is a frame on the window, it is also removed. The result is a bare frame.
Mounting brackets are installed on it in the places intended for this. Then you need to perform thermal insulation. Before you insulate your attic window, you need to purchase mineral wool. Thermal insulation material is placed on the top of the frame and secured with a stapler. At the bottom of the window, the thermal insulation is placed on the mounting beam, and then the frame is installed in the opening and the insulation is pressed against it.
Model range for the attic ↑
The range of Velux windows is very diverse: four modifications with a central axis, two with an upper axis, balcony designs and others.
Let's highlight the most common ones:
- “Economy” (GZL) is a basic model with a central opening axis. The profile is covered with two layers of varnish. Equipped with a washing filter, ventilation is carried out through the top;
- “Classic” (GGL) – a wooden product, opening along the central axis, treated with three layers of varnish. For ventilation, a window valve is used, equipped with a washing filter, and allows installation of electrical equipment
- “Smart” (GGL or GGU Integra) - equipped with an electric drive to adjust the position, there is a remote control, as well as a rain sensor. Allows installation of curtains and roller shutters.
- “Moisture resistant” (GGU) is a white product, the surface of the wood is covered with monolithic polyurethane. There is a valve-window, as well as a washing filter. Allows installation of electrical equipment.
- GPL - has two opening options: central axis and top 45⁰.
- Window-balcony (GDL) – has an interesting design solution: when the upper sash is lifted, something similar to a roof is formed, a fence is created by slightly opening the lower sash. “Coming out” onto such a balcony, although a person continues to remain indoors, he is practically in the fresh air.

Creating waterproofing around a window
The roof window kit includes a waterproofing apron. The finishing of roof windows must necessarily include waterproofing, since they are located under the window and are directly exposed to precipitation.
In the upper part of the future window, a sheathing equal to the width of the drainage gutter is cut out on both sides. The waterproofing in this place is cut in the middle. Then it is placed under the drainage gutter and installed in the gap between the sheathing. Thanks to this, water from above will flow from the waterproofing not into the window, but into the gutter.
Then the apron is unrolled and laid around the window so that it is protected from leaks. The apron is stapled to the mounting beam, frame, top sheathing and rafters. The edges are brought under the sheathing, and the upper part should be under the gutter. After this, the roofing material can be re-laid at the bottom of the window.

How to choose a roof window
The Velux company has been on the roof window market for almost 75 years. Its representative offices and production plant have been operating in Russia for more than a quarter of a century. During this time, many people trusted the experience and quality of this company’s products. The company produces not only windows. A complete Velux roof window kit also includes:
- waterproof aluminum flashing (flash code EWR);
- hydro-, heat- and vapor barrier, compatible with windows of the OPTIMA and PREMIUM segments;
- PVC slopes for the interior decoration of the attic around the window (match the size of the windows and do not require additional processing).
Important! Choose a kit specifically for your Velux window. In this case, you can avoid problems with the appearance of subtle cracks around the perimeter of the window and moisture inside the room.
The company produces a fairly wide range of windows. They differ in the manufacturing method, frame material, and double-glazed windows with different preset properties. In addition, each window is equipped with a special ventilation valve. With its help, you can easily ventilate the attic without opening the windows. The valve is equipped with a replaceable filter, which makes your stay in the house more comfortable. The slope of the roof slope, for which the Velux roof window kit is designed , is quite large and ranges from 15⁰ to 90⁰ to the floor plane.

And, of course, the company provides a large selection of standard sizes. The main rule that is used when choosing a window is the ability to place it between the roof beams. Moreover, its width should be 7–16 cm less than the distance between the rafters for further thermal insulation of the opening.
When choosing window sizes, the degree of illumination in the room is of no small importance. Using the table located in the figure below, you can calculate the sizes of Velux roof windows and their number.
For a budget option for an attic, when the rafters are set at a distance of 70 - 80 cm from each other, and natural lighting is planned to be supplemented with artificial lighting, a Velux attic window 55x78 cm is quite suitable. Under such a window it is later convenient to place, for example, a desk for your child. A good solution would be to install a second window of this size in the adjacent opening between the roof rafters. It is recommended to place the bottom of the window at a height of 90–130 cm to the level of the finished floor, depending on the slope of the roof. In this matter, you can get advice from a specialist when purchasing windows or from a designer.
Salary setting
Installation of the flashing begins from the bottom up. First, install the lower corrugated apron, then the upper and side ones. At the very end they put covers on the window.
Flashings from different manufacturers have their own installation characteristics, so you need to follow the attached instructions. For example, some windows have a rubber seal on the frame, while others do not. The flashing can be wavy or flat; the choice depends on whether the roof windows are installed in flat or wavy metal tiles. All parts of the flashing are joined and attached to the sheathing and frame. The lower apron is attached to the roofing material from above. At the end of the work, a special element is attached to the flashing, to which the roofing material will fit tightly.
To seal the joints between the opening and the frame, you can use only special sealants, and not polyurethane foam. After hanging the sashes, remove the protective covering from the window. Installation of roof window slopes must be done indoors. The lower slope is made vertical, and the upper slope is made horizontal. It is this arrangement that promotes the best air circulation.
If the installation was carried out correctly, repairs to the roof windows will not be required soon, and their operation will be convenient.

Preparatory stage
Installing a Velux roof window in a metal tile involves first selecting the desired window design model, as well as its type. Before installation, the number and sizes of windows to be installed are preliminarily determined. This is necessary to place them between the rafters in the roof, without violating the integrity of its frame, as well as above the heating radiators indoors, to ensure air circulation and prevent condensation. Taking into account the design features, windows should be located at a distance of at least 80-90 cm from the floor surface, and in some cases twice as high.
