Door weight: standards, selection tips, recommendations, photos

When choosing interior doors, you need to pay attention to their weight. The features of their installation depend on this. For example, if the door is heavy, more hinges will be needed to prevent the door leaf from warping. Massive and heavy fittings are not suitable for lightweight products. The weight of the door leaf with the frame depends on the material of manufacture, dimensions and other factors. It is useful to know how much a door of one type or another weighs, as well as how the weight of a door product is calculated in different cases.

How much does a wooden entrance door weigh?

The weight of a wooden door entrance structure depends on whether it is made from solid wood or laminated veneer lumber. The type of wood material also has an impact. Coniferous trees are lighter than hard deciduous trees. A standard size entrance door made of solid oak weighs about 36-45 kilograms. The weight of panels made from soft coniferous wood types is 15 kg per square meter. The weight of glued products is slightly greater, since they additionally contain glue and elements of various woods.

Also, the weight of the door leaf depends on what kind of fittings are used. The handle, locks, and peephole can make the sash 5 kg heavier.

Why know the mass of the sash?

This value is important for many factors:

  • To open both swing and sliding doors, certain physical efforts must be made. The heavier the sash, the more difficult it is to do this, especially for a weak person - a child or an old man. This point must be taken into account;

Sliding door

  • The opening mechanism affects the permissible weight limit. So, moving the sliding sash is much easier. Therefore, with the same degree of convenience, a larger mass is allowed in the latter case;

Lightweight door design

  • Interior doors must be installed both in the main wall and in the interior partition. The latter do not always have sufficiently high strength parameters. Accordingly, a massive sash cannot be installed here;
  • the same applies to old houses, where the walls of secondary importance are very light and cannot withstand heavy loads:

Doors in light partitions

  • The weight of the sash is important when choosing fittings: hinges, lock. The larger it is, the more durable and expensive hinges should be used, and the more massive the box should be installed.

Interior door weight

The weight of the interior door block may vary. The weight of the product depends on a number of factors. The weight of interior doors is determined by the material of manufacture, density, uniformity, and production technology. As a rule, products made from MDF, eco-veneer, oak, and pine are installed. Factory doors are produced in accordance with state standards and regulations. Therefore, all models are characterized by certain dimensions and weight.

From MDF

Door leaves made of MDF, mounted at the entrance to the room, can have different designs. Hollow versions usually weigh up to 10 kg. If the product is filled with honeycomb cardboard, its weight will be slightly higher. Frame-panelled models made of MDF are heavier. Their weight depends on the finishing cladding (film, veneer, paint), the presence of glass inserts and their quantity. The average weight of such structures is 25 kg.

Made from eco-veneer

Doors made of eco-veneer are characterized by low weight. Because it is a lightweight material. The weight of such doors is usually no more than 10 kg. On average it is 5-7 kg. Glass and mirror inserts make the product heavier.

From oak

Elite interior doors are most often made of oak. They emphasize the status and wealth of the owner of the house. The density of this type of wood is 810 kg/cub.m. Therefore, the sash is quite heavy. The weight of an oak door is 20-25 kg per 1m2. A standard door 900x2100 will weigh about 40-45 kg.

From pine wood

The density of pine wood is low and amounts to 520 kg/cub.m. Therefore, a door made of solid wood for a room will weigh little. The mass of a square meter of pine product is 15 kg. Therefore, a door of standard width and height usually weighs no more than 30 kg.

Characteristics of MDF

Each enterprise produces MDF boards using various technologies and dimensional standards that determine the technical characteristics of a particular product. Thus, the weight of the sheet will be influenced not only by its size, but also by its density. This indicator ranges from 600-850 kg/m³. The average density of the panels is 780 kg/m³.

Initially, MDF board looks like this, but the final product depends entirely on the finishing

Another criterion that affects the weight of the product is the presence of the outer covering of the slab, as well as its type and thickness. This can be one-sided or double-sided lamination with PVC film, laminating with paper film, or veneering with natural wood.

For example, wall panels have a protective and decorative coating on one side, and MDF boards, intended for the manufacture of various relief products (furniture facades, doors, decorative interior items, etc.), are simply produced with a polished surface, which makes it possible to carry out necessary milling operations.

The application of one or another coating is carried out on ready-made elements. There are also different types of MDF with a double-sided finish, most often used for making furniture.

Weight of a plastic door with glazing

Many people install plastic doors. They are durable, lightweight, available in different colors and are easy to care for. The weight of a 1m2 PVC blind door is about 1.5 kg. The weight of the PVC interior door is 15-16 kg. The presence of glass inserts increases the weight of the product. It all depends on their number and dimensions. The weight of a standard PVC door 2000x800 with glass inserts can reach up to 20 kg.

How to correctly calculate the cabinet front

Summarizing everything written above. It doesn’t matter how much you reduce the façade relative to the frame. The main principles for calculating dimensions for cabinet doors or cabinets with drawers, chests of drawers are as follows:

  • The play for hinged and retractable facades for the possibility of adjusting the hinges must be at least 2 mm in width. In terms of height, if there is no limiting canopy and/or protruding bottom, this principle is not important.
  • It is imperative to take into account the thickness of the edge when calculating the final size of the facade. PVC 2mm thick on both sides is already 4mm! This means that you need to subtract at least 7 mm from each side for the gap to take into account the thickness of the edge.
  • The principle of calculating facades must be observed for the entire set of furniture. Especially if there is a certain rowing, the adjoining of several diverse facades to each other.

This last principle is especially important for kitchens. Let's look at it in more detail.

Calculation of door weight using specific examples

The weight of the door can be calculated. To do this, you need to know what material it is made of and what its dimensions are. You also need to take into account the presence of inserts and their material of manufacture. Most often, wooden doors are installed 2100x900, plastic models with glass 2000x950, doors made of eco-veneer 2000x800. Therefore, it is advisable to consider examples of calculating the mass of such products. To calculate the weight of the door, you need to multiply the mass of one square meter by the area of the door leaf, add the frame, fittings, and inserts.

Weight of a wooden door 900x2100 with frame

A wooden door (oak) is given. Its height is 2100 mm, width 900 mm, and thickness 20 mm. The height of the frame is 2145 mm, and the width is 965 cm. The density of oak is 680 kg/cub.m. The weight of a wooden door 900x2100 with a frame will be 2100x900x20x680 = 25.16 cubic meters.

How much does a 2000x950 plastic door with glass weigh?

Plastic doors with glazing look presentable. Therefore, they are often installed at the entrance to offices or in apartments as interior spaces. To calculate the total weight of the structure, you need to add the weight of the plastic door and the weight of the glass insert.

Let's say a door is given with a height of 2000 mm and a width of 950 mm. The size of the glass insert is 1000x500 mm. Thus, the area of the plastic product will be 1000x450=450000 sq.mm or 0.45 sq.m. The mass will be 0.45x1.5=0.68 kg. The weight of the glass insert will be 1000x500=500000 sq.mm or 0.5 sq.m., 0.5 sq.m. x 12.5 = 6.25 kg. The total weight of a plastic door with glass 900x2100 will be 0.68+6.25=6.93 kg.

About eco-material and its difference from PVC

In online articles answering questions about eco-veneer, what kind of material it is for doors, I see some confusion. It is widely believed that these are wood fibers compressed in polymer or resin, which are rolled out during the production process and polymerized under pressure into a film.

In fact, in Russia, eco-veneer means a polypropylene film with wood decor. On sale under this marking you can find doors with two more types of coatings:

  • Cheap paper-based film coating . This finishing film is a layer of paper impregnated with synthetic resins. The cost of the product (usually a drawstring design) is low, and outwardly it is sometimes indistinguishable from the real thing, eco-veneered. You should be wary of the unusually low price, because the difference will appear during operation.

Model in modern style Source aviarydecor.com

  • PVC films . The toxicity of the polyvinyl chloride film itself is a myth. But this, unfortunately, cannot be said about the composition of the outer coating. If the color or fixative contains resins based on formaldehyde, such a polymer cannot be called safe. Dangerous additives are indirectly indicated by smell, but it is not always present, or may appear later, for example, when heated under the sun's rays.

Therefore, answering the question, PVC doors or eco-veneer, which is better, I would say that, in a certain way, in terms of basic performance characteristics, they are interchangeable. At the same time, the quality of the decor differs, namely, it decides how accurately the coating will convey the natural texture of the wood.

Eco-veneer is a covering made of polypropylene, a plastic that is safe for health (for example, medical containers are made from it). The material is relatively new; in production it is not much more expensive than polyvinyl chloride film. Thanks to edgeless technology, the coating is durable and reliably imitates natural material.

Both polypropylene and PVC are not afraid of water, both are available in matte and glossy textures, but the resemblance to wood is determined by the quality of the decor. The prefix “eco” in the name of polypropylene film is a marketing ploy that evokes associations with natural veneer.

How to calculate the area of facades

The most convenient way to calculate the area of facades is to create a table in Excel and enter the corresponding formulas for multiplying height*length*quantity and total summation.

It's based on simple mathematics. To calculate the area of the facade, you need to multiply its length by its width. Next, multiply by the quantity. And add it up with the rest if you need to calculate the total area of the facades.

Are eco-veneer and PP (polypropylene) the same thing or not?

The safety of polypropylene has made it the No. 1 synthetic material in Europe. Greenpeace dubbed it “the resource of the future.” It is thinner than PVC, and in terms of external and tactile characteristics it is very close to natural veneer and solid wood. To design the canvases, a variety of decors with rich, deep shades are used, including matte, silky, glossy embossing, as well as modern three-dimensional 3D effects - all this can be seen on doors with PP coating.

The film looks great in abundant artificial lighting, and every time the angle of the light flux changes, it becomes different, changes shade, becomes deeper. In technological terms, PP has two undeniable advantages:

  • It is not affected by ultraviolet radiation, its condition remains unchanged even at a temperature of 150 degrees;
  • The small thickness allows you to imitate the pattern of natural wood with high accuracy, which means that in design it is not much better, but still outperforms PVC.

And now the main thing is what is better: eco-veneer or PP? The answer lies in the composition. The fact is that under the eco-veneer lies the so-called Continuous Pressure Laminates (CPL for short), which means multilayer polypropylene material. Those. eco-veneer is also polypropylene, but with the addition of cellulose fibers, modifiers, synthetic binders and adhesive composition. Eco-veneer has not been subjected to an attempt at standardization, so there are a great many other names for this coating on the market, for example, Nanotex, ultra-veneer, etc. Whatever it is called, eco-veneer is essentially the same polypropylene, which means that we are unlikely to find it in them cardinal differences, just like in doors covered with these types of films.
