Useful tips: how to connect plastic windows together?

A variety of fittings are used in the production and installation of plastic double-glazed windows.
It is necessary for high-quality, proper operation of the window, as well as for the correct installation of the components of the frame.

One type of such fittings is a connector between plastic windows. Before using this element yourself, it is recommended to learn more about its purpose, functions and types.

How is the frame of a balcony block made of PVC profile assembled?

Installing a balcony block with your own hands poses many challenges for a novice master.
It is necessary to take measurements taking into account a quarter of the window, order and deliver the manufactured structure to the site, properly prepare the opening and, what is very important, correctly assemble the block itself into a single whole. Proper assembly of the frame of a balcony block from a PVC profile is to ensure that the connection between the door and the window is strong, airtight and ultimately does not freeze during the cold season. In this article you will find some useful recommendations on how to properly assemble a balcony block. As you understand, the future junction of two structural elements requires careful sealing. Secure the door frame to the floor with the hinges facing down and apply foam along the top edge of the frame.

The foam layer must undergo a primary polymerization process. These 15 minutes should be spent preparing the window. Using a screwdriver and a 5 mm drill, drill the window profile in three places on the side opposite the hinges so that the holes come out in the center of the fastening part of the frame. It is better to drill from the outside: firstly, it is easier and more convenient; secondly, this will help to avoid damage to the rubber seals by the rotating element of the screwdriver.

While you are working on the window, the adhesive you applied will already acquire a suitable consistency: the foam will no longer be viscous and sticky.

Please note: Compliance with the norm of primary polymerization helps to avoid unpleasant consequences, since accidentally compressed areas of freshly applied foam lose their ability to expand, which deprives this adjacent area of tightness. The dried crust will protect the substance from careless touches. At the moment of joining the parts, it will burst, releasing the adhesive composition, which guarantees the manufacturability and reliability of the joint.

Now install the connecting profiles on one of the structures, having first removed the protective film from the frames. Additionally, apply a little foam for better adhesion and connect the door and window frames. Be sure to align all the parts horizontally before finally fastening them together. For the final stage of assembly we will need a screwdriver, an RN 2 bit and self-tapping screws with a drill.

Important: you should not screw in the screws too tightly so as not to deform the profile, but their length should be sufficient to pass through the first part and secure itself in the reinforcement of the second.

As you can see, assembling the frame of a balcony block is not so technologically complex that you can’t do it yourself, without involving strangers who consider themselves professionals.

Double-glazed window.

It is an integral part of the window. It consists of several glasses, which in turn are separated by a metal spacer frame. Using two layers of sealant, the structure is firmly connected. Double-glazed windows are divided into three-, two- and single-chamber.

The chamber is the gap (gas or air) between the glasses. Example: a single-chamber double-glazed window consists of two glasses that are separated by air space. Double-glazed windows vary in width: 42, 32, 30, 28, 24 mm. If the width of a single-chamber double-glazed window is 24 mm, this means that two glasses 4 mm wide are connected to each other and the distance between them is 16 mm.

The energy-saving properties of a double-glazed window depend on the number of glasses and their type. On a single-chamber double-glazed window, condensation forms already at minus eight degrees, and on a double-chamber double-glazed window at minus eighteen. The main functions of double-glazed windows are sound insulation and thermal insulation (read about the advantages of plastic windows here). Special glasses with a low-emissivity surface layer (i-glass or k-glass) and several air chambers are used to reduce heat loss through the glass unit. You can also increase the distance between the glasses or fill the distance between the glasses with inert gases, this will improve sound insulation.

Types of windows. Part eight. Multi-frame or composite structures.

So now we will briefly go over multi-frame structures . What it is?

A multi-frame structure is a structure that consists of two or more window or door frames that are connected to each other using a special profile into one structure. This is done mainly to bring together windows of different heights. In 90 percent of cases this is the connection between the door and the window.

As an example, look at the following photo.

Here you see a classic connection, a window and a balcony door are connected.

You can see this in a closer view in the second photo.

The number 1 indicates the door frame, 2 the connector itself (kopplung) and its visible, outer part, 3 is naturally the window frame. (4 is the corner that covers the space between the old window sill and the new window. It has nothing to do with this post. About this I'll talk later.)

So, each plastic window has special cutouts in the profile on the side, which help to connect either expanding profiles, a connector, or compensating profiles to the window. The profiles are snapped into these cutouts.

And here is the connector itself.

The connector consists of three parts. Number 1 indicates a plastic profile (there are 2 of them in the connector) which actually provides the connection itself. In this case, the protrusions indicated by the number 3 must fit into the corresponding grooves on the frames being connected when connecting. At number 4 I designated the outer part of this profile.

In order for the connection to be stable and ensure the stability of the connected structure, a reinforcing metal profile (number 2 in the figure) is required, which is inserted between the plastic profiles. But in order to ensure thermal insulation, heat-insulating tape is glued to the connector, naturally, on both sides as shown in the figure under number 5.

How to connect two windows together? First of all, at least two people are needed in order for the installation of this structure to proceed without problems. Believe me, one person will spend 3-4 times more time than two people. And this is not to mention the danger of some problems during assembly.

In order to connect two windows, we assemble a connector and attach it to a frame that is smaller in height, making sure that the connector fits tightly and without distortions into the grooves on the frame; if necessary, you can knock on the metal, and in no case on the plastic profile . After making sure that the connector is installed correctly, drill a hole in the metal profile and screw the fastening screw into the frame. One will be enough since its function is temporary. It is only needed so that the connector remains in place while assembling the entire structure.

"Seven times measure cut once"

So, you finally decided to install new beautiful windows yourself. In this case, before ordering frames and double-glazed windows, the most important thing is to make all measurements absolutely accurately, so that the result does not disappoint you, but pleases you for many years.

To do this, you need to carefully measure the window opening where you plan to install a new window, from the inside - its width from the base of the wall, and not from the existing slopes. If there are any, they must be dismantled before measurements. Then we measure the height of the window opening, taking into account what kind of window sill you have in your house. If it is possible to remove it, the height is taken into account from the base of the slab on which the window is supposed to be placed. The next parameter is the depth of the opening. These measurements should also be made taking into account the presence of dismantled elements such as old plaster, slats and slats of the old window. Thus, we have completed internal measurements.

You also need to be extremely careful with the external dimensions of the window opening. Here we are dealing with the same parameters - width, height and depth. In this case, you again need to take into account the presence of dismantled parts such as old plaster, cement or edging at the bottom of the window opening.

When taking measurements, it should be taken into account that the window can contract and expand under the influence of temperature fluctuations. To do this, it is necessary to leave appropriate space in the window opening, the minimum size of which is strictly defined.

So, for windows up to 1.2 m in size, a gap of 15 mm is sufficient, for windows up to 2.2 m in size - 20 mm, and for windows up to 3 m in size - 25 mm.

Do not forget that the window does not completely “sit” into the window opening, but only extends into it a few centimeters. In other words, you need at least 4 cm of distance between the edges of the double-glazed window and the sash itself in order to make slopes. Thus, it makes sense to order windows only after all measurements have been taken, taking into account the window edging and all details have been taken into account. Don’t forget about the fittings and all the necessary elements - a handle, a mosquito net, fastenings for it, ebb and window sill.

Removing the old window

Dismantling an old window is a troublesome and quite dirty task, since there will be a lot of dust. Therefore, it is worth at least covering all interior items in the room with film. However, the best option is if the room is completely free of furniture, especially soft furniture.

To dismantle the old window you will need a chisel, hammer, pry bar, hacksaw or jigsaw. The chisel and hammer can be replaced with a hammer drill. First of all, we get rid of the old window or the window sash that is the smallest in size. Then remove the large sash. After this comes the turn of the internal partition between the sashes - it must be sawed and then removed from the frame. Next, we “disassemble” the lower part of the old frame, also using a hacksaw or jigsaw, and then dismantle the remaining parts of the window.

After the old frame has been dismantled, it is necessary to level the surfaces where the new window will be placed. To do this, use a hammer drill or a chisel and a hammer to chop off all the irregularities, and in order to be able to install a new window sill, the same tools must be used to prepare grooves along the openings of the future window.

Now you need to prepare for the relatively “clean” process of installing a new window. To do this, completely free the window opening from debris and dust. The crumbling surfaces of the opening must be treated with strengthening primers.

Particular attention should be paid to those places where the sealing tapes will be glued to ensure their reliable fixation. For this purpose, special primers (primers) can be used.

Preparing the profile for installation

Before installing a new window, you need to disassemble it: remove the sashes and remove the double-glazed windows from the blind parts of the window. Since the outside of the window profile is covered with a protective film, you must remove it before installation. It is also necessary to immediately fix the fastenings for the mosquito net, and close the drain holes with decorative plugs.

An important stage in preparing a window profile for installation is compliance with the requirements for protecting the installation seam or installation of windows in accordance with GOST. In the Russian climate with high temperature changes, even with the most careful installation and use of windows, the problem can be the appearance of condensation, and then fungus on the walls adjacent to the window opening. To avoid this problem, it is recommended to use vapor barrier and waterproofing vapor-permeable tapes. At this stage, before installing the window frame in the opening, on the inside of the quarter of the opening or on the frame profile, where it adjoins the quarter, it is necessary to stick PSUL (vapor-permeable self-expanding sealing tape).

This will ensure a tight connection of the profile to the window opening. To ensure sealing of the seam from the inside of the room, in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, vapor barrier tapes are glued to the profile. To seal the junctions of additional elements, expansion and support profiles, it is recommended to use self-expanding tape.

Anchors or plates?

One of the main points that you should decide on before installing a new window is the mounting method. You may prefer to “mount” the window profile on anchors or on mounting plates. Each of these methods has its own characteristics, and therefore, to make the right choice, you need to take into account a number of nuances of your room, and first of all, the material from which the walls are made.

If the window opening is in a brick or panel wall, then there is practically no difference which type of fastening to use. But you should definitely choose mounting on mounting plates if you are installing windows in a building made of aerated concrete or foam blocks.

It is better to drill from the outside: firstly, it is easier and more convenient, and secondly, it will help avoid damage to the rubber seals by the rotating element of the screwdriver.

The main mistakes when installing plastic panels with your own hands

When assembling a plastic profile for the first time, mistakes are made. It is better to study them before installation, so as not to collide or prevent them in time. Common mistakes are related to incorrect measurements of the opening or the window itself when purchasing.

The window size is incorrect

All measurements are carried out carefully and several times. The slightest errors will lead to the fact that the entire system will not last long.

If the design is chosen to be smaller, over time excess moisture will begin to enter the room. At the same time, the Euro-window will not retain heat in the room.

A structure that is too large will leave no room for a layer of insulation. This means that incorrect measurements will not allow you to install double-glazed windows correctly.

Poor preparation of the window opening

Polyurethane foam forms a good adhesion only with a cleaned substrate. It is necessary to get rid of debris and dust.

The old seal is also removed. Otherwise, the foam will not attach and the panel will not be assembled correctly.

Ignoring wall insulation

Thermal insulation plays an important role when assembling Euro windows. With its help, heat remains in the room, and cold air does not enter inside.

If thermal insulation is ignored, all the advantages of the PVC system will be negated. This issue deserves due attention. This especially applies to residents of the northern region. After all, a Euro window will not protect you from strong winds and cold weather.

Incorrect distance between the window frame and the slope

Such an error will result in a poor-quality seal. To prevent this from happening, follow the prescribed distance standards. There remains 3-4 cm between the slope and the frame. The distance between the frame and the platband is no more than 1.5 cm.

Incorrect size of window sill

The window sill is an important part of the structure. The ebb and window sill are attached to it. If it is not there, or its size is incorrect, installing a drainage system will not be possible. This will lead to frequent wetting of the profile and wall. Water can get under the window frame. In this case, corrosion of the dowels may begin.

Poor quality fastening of PVC window to the wall

To install a plastic window yourself, you also need to know about the fastening rules. It can be carried out in the middle of the wall, next to the insulation or in the plane of the thermal insulation.

In this case, the difference lies in the wall itself.

  1. In a single-layer wall, the fastenings are in the middle.
  2. The system is mounted next to the insulation in a double-layer wall.
  3. For a three-layer insulation, the location of the fasteners in the perimeter of the insulation is typical.

An insufficient number of fasteners will also negatively affect the condition of the structure. Over time, the panel will change its position. The condensation process will be disrupted. Strong winds will cause frame deformation.

Not enough polyurethane foam

The absence of a sufficient amount of mounting foam will result in the panel being poorly fixed in the opening. Over time, it will change its position, which will cause many problems for the owner.

In addition, the foam helps maintain the temperature in the room and prevents moisture. It is worth remembering that the foam should cover the openings by 90%.

A large amount of it will also negatively affect the result.

No insulation tape

There are several types of insulating tape. They are classified according to weather periods and other features.

What types of plastic window connectors are there?

You need to know what system your plastic window is, since each manufacturer has different types of connections and can differ greatly from each other. Even windows from the same manufacturer can have different types of connections. So, for example, window profiles produced under the GOODWIN brand have at least two of the most common window systems, such as group 583 and group 705

In each group, the profiles are different from each other, although they have the same names. They differ in their article numbers, which consist of four numbers. Below are the profiles themselves and their components, including fasteners.

Sash.

The sash of a plastic window consists of a five-chamber or three-chamber plastic profile. Inside this profile there is a galvanized steel reinforcing profile, which has a U-shape. The sash is designed so that a plastic window has parts that can open (types of plastic windows).

The frame , like the sash, consists of a five-chamber or three-chamber plastic profile. Inside this profile there is a galvanized steel reinforcing profile, which has the shape of a rectangular pipe or a U-shape. The frame always contains a reinforcing profile. Steel and plastic profiles are connected to each other using screws. The frame gives the structure rigidity. It is through this that the window is attached to the opening (read about installing plastic windows here).

Window accessories system

First of all, we need to define the subject of our discussion. There is no consensus among experts in the window industry regarding the interpretation of the term, so I will give both definitions used:

  1. According to one point of view, window components are those parts that are not directly included in the window structure. That is, this includes only what is not a part of the frame, sash, glass unit or fittings.
  2. On the other hand, many window industry experts define window components as a set of elements, the installation of which is possible after the structure has been manufactured/installed. In this case, the list of parts is expanded primarily due to the fittings - if necessary, it can be “upgraded” by adding the necessary parts.

Accessories.

It combines all metal fixed and movable elements of plastic windows (hinges, locks for locking the window, counterparts of locking locks, window or door handles, etc.). The fittings are necessary to connect the sash and frame together. In addition, thanks to the fittings, windows can be opened in various ways. Fittings also include accessories for plastic windows.
