How to connect two plastic windows together

What types of plastic window connectors are there?

What types of plastic window connectors are window + window or window + balcony door?
You need to know what system your plastic window is, since each manufacturer has different types of connections and can differ greatly from each other. Even windows from the same manufacturer can have different types of connections. So, for example, window profiles produced under the “GOODWIN” brand have at least two of the most common window systems, such as group 583 and group 705

In each group, the profiles are different from each other, although they have the same names. They differ in their article numbers, which consist of four numbers. Below are the profiles themselves and their components, including fasteners.

And additional fasteners.

Connecting profiles are used where it is necessary to connect structural elements consisting of several frames; moreover, thanks to connecting profiles, it is possible to join window frame profiles at the desired angle.

Here are some examples of connectors from .

Connecting profile, 58 series, article 150-t, 350-t, used, more often on balconies when connecting several blocks.

The “H-shaped” connector from the same company, article numbers 152-a and 352-a, are reinforced connecting profiles and are used when installing larger (larger) structures.

There are also universal connecting profiles, with their help you can join window blocks at the required angle.

Corner connectors, articles 155 and 355, for 58 and 70 series.

Allows you to connect window blocks at right angles.

And this is only one manufacturer, there are others (VEKA, REHAU, etc.), they have their own profiles.

Here are some photos of the connecting profiles,

How to connect a balcony frame from 2 parts?

When choosing aluminum or PVC glazing, you have to think about how to connect a balcony frame from 2 parts so that the joints between them fit tightly, and the structure itself is strong, durable and does not loosen under gusts of wind, has no cracks, does not serve as a source of cold penetration and looks decent , aesthetically pleasing.

The design of window frames provides for this need. For this purpose, the profile has side cutouts designed specifically for the use of a connector, compensator or expander. Let's consider this possibility.

Connection of two balcony frames

Connection piece for composite frames

If the balcony is glazed with two or more frames, to ensure a reliable connection, a special profile is used that presses them tightly at the junction points. The part brings together window configurations of any height well.

Kopplung - connector is an element consisting of 3 parts (3 mm):

A double profile: PVC and a metal one that reinforces it ensures the strength of the connection.

The side projections that fit into the grooves of the frames being joined are necessary for their coupling.

Aesthetic exterior, visible from outside and inside.

In order to thermally insulate the joints, adhesive tape is additionally used.

How is assembly carried out?

For example, consider a connection in the vertical direction. You will need a connector, which is first attached to the lower frame, inserting protruding elements into its grooves. To avoid distortion, you can knock on the surface, but only on the metal profile, not on the plastic one.

A hole is drilled in the metal part of the profile, crossing the frame, and a fastening screw is screwed in (has a temporary function and is only necessary for the vertical arrangement of frames).

The prepared lower frame is installed on the balcony railing, a second frame is built on top, inserting the protrusions of the connector into its grooves. They straighten it by lightly tapping it with a wooden hammer, make sure that there are no distortions, and begin fastening.

Using a long drill, make through holes for screws 100 mm long and 5 mm thick, passing them through the profiles of the first frame, connector, and second frame. When screwing in the screws, they are recessed into the profile so that there are no subsequent problems with installing the double-glazed window.

Important! In accordance with safety rules, the joining of balcony frames must be carried out by at least 2 people - no less.

These must be experienced professionals who know how to connect a balcony frame of 2 parts in a vertical or horizontal position, and not cause harm to others.

Types of windows. Part eight. Multi-frame or composite structures.

So now we will briefly go over multi-frame structures . What it is?

A multi-frame structure is a structure that consists of two or more window or door frames that are connected to each other using a special profile into one structure. This is done mainly to bring together windows of different heights. In 90 percent of cases this is the connection between the door and the window.

As an example, look at the following photo.

Here you see a classic connection, a window and a balcony door are connected.

You can see this in a closer view in the second photo.

The number 1 indicates the door frame, 2 the connector itself (kopplung) and its visible, outer part, 3 is naturally the window frame. (4 is the corner that covers the space between the old window sill and the new window. It has nothing to do with this post. About this I'll talk later.)

So, each plastic window has special cutouts in the profile on the side, which help to connect either expanding profiles, a connector, or compensating profiles to the window. The profiles are snapped into these cutouts.

And here is the connector itself.

The connector consists of three parts. Number 1 indicates a plastic profile (there are 2 of them in the connector) which actually provides the connection itself. In this case, the protrusions indicated by the number 3 must fit into the corresponding grooves on the frames being connected when connecting. At number 4 I designated the outer part of this profile.

In order for the connection to be stable and ensure the stability of the connected structure, a reinforcing metal profile (number 2 in the figure) is required, which is inserted between the plastic profiles. But in order to ensure thermal insulation, heat-insulating tape is glued to the connector, naturally, on both sides as shown in the figure under number 5.

How to connect two windows together? First of all, at least two people are needed in order for the installation of this structure to proceed without problems. Believe me, one person will spend 3-4 times more time than two people. And this is not to mention the danger of some problems during assembly.

In order to connect two windows, we assemble a connector and attach it to a frame that is smaller in height, making sure that the connector fits tightly and without distortions into the grooves on the frame; if necessary, you can knock on the metal, and in no case on the plastic profile . After making sure that the connector is installed correctly, drill a hole in the metal profile and screw the fastening screw into the frame. One will be enough since its function is temporary. It is only needed so that the connector remains in place while assembling the entire structure.

Now you can install the frame with the connector in the window opening. Then the second frame is installed and tightened with clamps from the first. If the plastic profiles do not fit into the grooves of the second frame, you can lightly tap the frame with a hammer. Just be careful, in cold weather the plastic becomes more fragile and can be damaged. In any case, I recommend, if possible, either a hammer with a plastic tip or a wooden one. At the next stage, after making sure that the connector is installed correctly (In order to check whether the connector is installed correctly, it is enough to measure the distance from the connector to the edge of the frame. Top, bottom and in the middle. The distance should be the same everywhere.) you can begin fastening the connection . To do this, using a long drill, we drill the frame, connector and second frame to the depth of the screw (we use screws 5 mm thick and 100 mm long) as shown in the photograph. The diameter of the drill is preferably slightly larger than the screw. For example 5.5 or 6 mm. If necessary, apply a little technical grease to the screw when twisting the connection.

If you are connecting a window to fixed glazing and drilling from the side of the window, then be sure to recess the screw under the surface of the frame, otherwise you will have problems installing the glass. That's probably all. A couple more tips when measuring, take into account the thickness of the connector plus a couple of centimeters of free space depending on the thickness of the connector so that you can connect the windows freely and without problems. And secondly, if you are connecting windows in a horizontal plane, and not in a vertical one as I described to you, then you do not need a temporary screw.

Next we will talk about roller shutters, their types and installation methods. Including electric motors.

PVC window sill connector

In order for a new metal-plastic window to have a finished appearance, it is necessary not only to finish the slopes, but also to install a window sill. At first glance, it may seem that installing a plastic window sill is a fairly simple procedure. However, it is necessary to understand that situations may arise in which installing a window sill may cause certain difficulties. So, for example, if the width of the window opening is more than six meters, it will be necessary to “increase” the length of the window sill. It is for such purposes that the connector for PVC window sills is intended. It may also be needed if the walls are not on the same straight line, but at a certain angle to each other. In such a situation, the window sill must have a decorative connection. Quite often situations arise when a standard-length window sill is very difficult to transport to the installation site. Then the standard six-meter canvas has to be divided into small fragments. When installing them, a connector for PVC window sills is used, which allows you to cover the joints with decorative elements. It is worth noting that when installing window sills of plastic windows, it may be necessary to connect them at an angle of 90 degrees or on the bay window. Special bay window connectors will help you cope with this task. Many people believe that the presence of any connectors on plastic window sills significantly worsens their appearance. However, this is a mistaken opinion, because modern connectors have an aesthetic appearance and fit perfectly into the overall interior of the window structure. It is also worth noting that in some cases of installing plastic window sills, such connectors are the only option for proper installation. Recently, bay windows (rounded loggias) have become especially popular. And if no difficulties arose with its glazing, then you will need to work hard on installing the window sills here. Of course, in such a situation it is hardly possible to do without special connectors that will allow you to connect several plastic panels into one solid structure.

We do not sell the profile and we do not advise you to!

Here's a fact: it works with the Rehau profile. What does this say about the company itself and the quality of its products? The correct answer is absolutely nothing.

Are you surprised? Then let's figure out what a profile is

The profile is the basis of a translucent structure, made of polyvinyl chloride and consisting of several air chambers. The more there are, the higher the thermal insulation characteristics of the finished window structure will be. In accordance with the requirements of GOST 30673-99, there must be at least two cameras, but manufacturers today are increasingly offering systems of three or five cameras.

To be honest, a profile is just a plastic frame into which a double-glazed window is subsequently installed, seals are installed, and fittings are hung. All that may interest the client when choosing a profile is its correct geometry, neat seams, as well as color stability during further use of the window. Moreover, only the latter can be guaranteed by profile manufacturers, since the geometry and processing of connections is already the work of the company that sells you the finished window.

Does the quality of the profile determine the physical characteristics of a plastic window?

Yes, but only partly. In the end, everything will depend not so much on the quality of the window structure, but on compliance with the installation technology: an illiterate installer can negate all the advantages of both the profile and the double-glazed window, and even the fittings.

Window accessories system

First of all, we need to define the subject of our discussion. There is no consensus among experts in the window industry regarding the interpretation of the term, so I will give both definitions used:

  1. According to one point of view, window components are those parts that are not directly included in the window structure. That is, this includes only what is not a part of the frame, sash, glass unit or fittings.
  2. On the other hand, many window industry experts define window components as a set of elements, the installation of which is possible after the structure has been manufactured/installed. In this case, the list of parts is expanded primarily due to the fittings - if necessary, it can be “upgraded” by adding the necessary parts.

Comparison of PVC profiles

The metal-plastic profile significantly affects the cost of the window. At first glance, the profiles of different companies are the same, but this is not so. Now window manufacturers in Stavropol offer profiles from WDS, Rehau, KTM, Open Teck, Brokelman, Veka and many others. Which metal-plastic profile to choose? Which PVC profile is better? Is plastic toxic? In this article we will answer these and other questions and help you choose the best option for glazing your home.

What is PVC?

Profiles for plastic windows are produced using PVC extruders. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) was obtained by the French scientist Rainier in 1835 and is rightfully considered one of the oldest artificial materials. The first window profiles were produced in Germany back in 1954. Based on its chemical composition, PVC is classified as a thermoplastic. Ethylene (43%) reacts chemically with chlorine (57%) to form dichloroethane, then vinyl chloride, which is converted by polymerization into polyvinyl chloride. PVC is a flame-retardant material, resistant to atmospheric influences, has low thermal conductivity and cost. Titanium oxide is used as pigments to give the profile a white color, and iron oxide is used for brown. Also, to improve the physical and chemical properties of plastic, plasticizers are used, which increase the elasticity of the material when exposed to low temperatures.

Is plastic toxic?

To ensure that windows do not change their color and serve properly for many years, thermal stabilizers are added to the plastic composition. Until 2001, PVC contained lead. Everyone knows that lead is a heavy metal and its fumes can be harmful to health. But lead in production was not used in its pure form, but in a compound. For example, lead compounds are included in crystal. But no one considers crystal to be a deadly material, and products made from it have been used in everyday life for many years. By 2015, it is planned to stop using lead in industry. Please note that after the adoption of the settlement agreement in the production of plastic, instead of lead compounds, calcium and zinc began to be used as a heat stabilizer. All declared profiles are certified and have sanitary and hygienic conclusions that confirm the safety of plastic windows.

Today there are more than 10 manufacturers of PVC profiles on the window market. How do profiles for metal-plastic windows differ from each other? Let's compare the profiles of famous brands: WDS, REhau, KTM, Veka, Brokelman, KBE, Open Teck.

Profile thickness

The main characteristic of a profile is its width (installation depth). Today, profiles with a width of 58-60 mm and 70 mm are actively used on the market. A profile with a width of 70 mm has higher heat-saving and sound-insulating characteristics. You need to choose the profile width based on the intended installation location (a window in an apartment, a window in a house, a balcony or loggia, a door to a store) and the climatic zones of Ukraine.

WDS 400WDS 500KTM Terma

Number of cameras

The number of cameras is an equally important characteristic of the profile. Chambers are air-filled voids between partitions. Their number depends on the width of the profile and affects the thermal insulation. The more cameras, the “warmer” the profile. The 60 mm thick profile has three or four chambers. The first is designed to drain condensate. In the second, a reinforcing profile is placed in production; in the third, parts of the fittings are fixed. The 70 mm thick profile has four or five chambers. Note that increasing the number of cameras without changing the thickness of the profile does not significantly affect the characteristics of the window.

Thickness of the outer walls of the profile

According to DSTU B V.2.6-15-99 C.14 and the European standard RAL GZ 716/1 (part 1, 7), the thickness of the profile walls must be at least 3 mm. A number of manufacturers save on profile production and supply the Ukrainian market with a profile with a wall thickness of about 2.6 mm. When welding profiles, their large deformation is observed, the quality of the welds deteriorates, the strength of the corner connectors is weakened, and the time for safe operation of the window is significantly reduced.

Profile class

Metal-plastic profiles are divided into 2 classes: A and B. Class A has a thickened outer wall (more than 3 mm ± 0.2 mm) and is considered the optimal profile for apartment windows, child care facilities, entrance and interior doors. Class B - a profile where the wall thickness is less than 3 mm, used for glazing commercial buildings. The advantages of this profile are lower cost compared to class A profile.

Measuring the inner wall of the profilePVC profile chambersMeasuring the outer wall of the profile

Profile reinforcement

To give the structure strength, a metal profile made of galvanized steel, 1-2 mm thick, is installed in the inner chamber of the frame, sash and impost. The metal profile compensates for possible deformation of the structure, since plastic and steel react differently to temperature changes. Reinforcement can be C-shaped, U-shaped or closed. The installed metal is not visible to the end user, as it is located inside the window or door. You should be wary if they offer very low prices for windows. It is likely that there is thinner metal inside the structure.
