What are thread curtains
Thread (or muslin) curtains are thin strips fixed at equal distances from each other on a base braid. The range of materials used in their production allows you to decorate not only a window opening with this type of curtain, but also to zone the interior space, use it as an openwork partition instead of a door structure, or protect yourself from prying eyes by hanging thread curtains on the balcony.
Designers love to use thread curtains in the interior for their undeniable advantages over other types of textile curtains:
- Rope models are durable, but at the same time have an amazing ability to transform: they can even be used to form additional decorative elements (tiebacks, overblinds, lambrequins made of thread curtains).
- Kisey is universal: both in terms of stylistic solutions and in combining and creating complex multi-layer ensembles with other materials.
A window decorated with muslin always attracts attention with its originality and beauty. You can decorate thread curtains in many ways: by collecting tiebacks in the form of semicircular, wavy structures or strict, with geometrically clear lines of columns. And accessories for filament curtains amaze with the variety of models, colors, and the use of unusual stylistic and design solutions.
- Rich color palette: to decorate the window, you can choose plain thread curtains, combine several shades at the same time, or decorate the window with rainbow sparkling ropes.
- Curtains are easy and practical to care for.
- Kisey requires minimal processing in the studio after purchase. In order to hang thread curtains, it is enough to sew a curtain tape along the top edge: with a grommet or classic (with hooks) fastening.
You can trim thread curtains yourself. To do this, you need to secure the curtains and carefully straighten the jets. The further procedure is similar to cutting hair: with sharp scissors you need to shorten the thread curtains to any length. In this case, a smooth or figured bottom edge is formed: in a wave, cascade or in the shape of an arch.
You can trim it yourself
At the cut site, textile strips do not require processing: special weaving does not allow the fibers to unravel.
How to cut to length
To reduce the length of a muslin curtain, you do not need to contact a sewing workshop. In order to trim the threads of a new curtain evenly, they need to be given time to sag (on average 2-3 days). After that:
- a small number of threads are pinched between the index and middle fingers of the left hand (for right-handers). The required length is measured with the same hand;
- excess threads are cut off with scissors under your fingers;
- With your left hand, a new strand is picked up, it is also clamped between your fingers and aligned with the previously cut one.
There is no need to be afraid that all the strands will turn out different in size, because after the first trimming you can go through the scissors a second time and change the length or shape of the muslin.
The most interesting thing is that, thanks to special processing, the cut threads do not begin to “shag”. This means that they can be given any shape without spoiling the appearance of the curtains.
History of curtain threads
For the first time, thread curtains appeared in the East. It was this structure of the canvas that protected from sunlight and ensured the unhindered entry of fresh air into the room in hot climates.
Hanging string curtains in the interior gently diffuse bright light without darkening the interior space. Translucent fabric, consisting of thin horizontal lines, creates a comfortable interior atmosphere, protected from prying eyes.
Over time, this type of decoration gained popularity far beyond the borders of eastern countries. Thread curtains are used to decorate residential premises and commercial establishments (cafes, restaurants, clubs) to create a unique charm and mood.
Reducing horizontal blinds
There are two types of structures for windows and openings:
- collected along guide cords, they are made dense;
- soft, screwed onto a roller (essentially, these are roller shutters consisting of strips).
We adjust the blinds to the required dimensions from below. We remove the clamps, remove the required number of slats, and cut the cord to the required size. The length of the chain, thanks to which the slats rise upward, is not adjusted.
Assembling structures are reduced in a similar way. It is easier to reduce horizontal structures than vertical ones.
How to shorten roller blinds to length
The choice of design for small rooms and attics is associated with the problem of decorating non-standard windows. The situation can be saved by roller blinds or roll-up blinds. They are tightly attached to the frame. They are convenient and easy to use. One problem is that there are no short models on sale, although the width of the roller blinds can be adjusted to suit your size.
Trimming open structures is simple: just reduce the length of the canvas at the top, tear it off the roller, straighten it, and cut it. We fix the edge with glue on the tube.
Some people prefer not to disassemble the roller; the fabric is cut from the bottom, leaving an allowance of 5 cm. It is necessary to make a drawstring for the weighting material. Without it, the canvas will dangle.
It is more difficult to trim closed roller blinds or curtains. We carefully remove the fabric from the guides and reduce it to the required length. The guides themselves also need to be reduced. We take out the plugs from them, cut the plastic with a knife, aluminum with a hacksaw or jigsaw. We remove the burrs, straighten the cut, tuck the blade into the guides, and install the plugs in place.
How to cut roller blinds to width
It is necessary to reduce the fabric, tube, and weight. We lay out the roller shutter on the floor, unfold it, take out the weighting material, it can be easily felt.
It is difficult to trim roller blinds made of organza and other soft fabrics evenly. Instead of markings, thermolena is glued onto the canvas, and a cut is made along it.
You can reduce the support roller of roller blinds with a hacksaw or jigsaw. The support shaft should be 0.8–1 cm wider than the fabric so that the fabric does not deform at the edges when twisted. All that remains is to cut off the weighting material. It is made several millimeters smaller than the width of the fabric.
So, let's summarize. Roller blinds and blinds can be adjusted to the required size yourself. To do this, it is enough to arm yourself with a small set of tools. They are in every apartment. When thinking through the interior, you should not give up roller shutters and blinds. They are practical, comfortable, modern.

What is muslin made of?
In the production of thread curtains, not only textile materials are used. Rhinestones, metal elements, feathers, beads, etc. are used for decoration. Decorations and fibers can be combined and complement each other.
Conventionally, thread curtains can be divided into the following categories, depending on the material of manufacture:
- With solid fittings. It can be distributed along the entire length of the thread (at certain intervals) or act as the basis of the curtain: for example, beads strung in a continuous row.
With solid fittings
- A completely textile product consists of threads (muslin) attached to a braid.
It is easy to work with muslin curtains (both at the stage of creating a decorative ensemble and during operation). They are obedient: they retain the shape given to them, do not get confused, do not wrinkle or deform over time.
- The last type of curtain includes a combination of thin strips of fabric and decorative threads of fishing line with solid decorations strung on them.
The minimum price for thread curtains is approximately 1000 rubles. This is the cost of the simplest single-color product made from artificial materials; an increase in price will provoke:
- use of natural fibers;
- solid jewelry;
- weaving threads: decorating the surface with dense textured butterflies, flowers, animal figures;
- product size.
Fabrics with patterns
If there is a drawing, it also needs to be analyzed. The pattern can be directional or non-directional.
If the pattern is non-directional and the fabric does not have pile or shading, you can safely lay out the parts both in one direction and in the other, as well as in a jack to save material.
If the pattern is directional, you need, firstly, to immediately decide where the pattern will be directed, for example, to the shoulder seam or to the bottom of the product, and, secondly, to respect this choice when laying it out.
We also analyze the size of the drawing. If it is small, most likely there is no need to join the parts, but if the pattern is large, you need to think about proper combination of details, for example, if you want the flowers to go strictly along the waistline. In this case, fabric consumption increases due to natural reasons. It’s best if you can take the pattern with you to the store and figure out the layout on the spot before purchasing the fabric.
Interior decoration with rope curtains
The ability to vary the length, transform the threads into numerous woven, flowing waves or stripes designs allows you to decorate any rooms and openings with rope curtains.
Living room
The design of thread curtains for this room is largely determined by the stylistic decision of the interior space. For a classic interior, it is more appropriate to choose textile curtains without decoration, forming an ensemble with curtains based on color. Thread curtains look interesting, repeating in shade the contrasting details in the design of the curtains: braid for edging, lambrequin, rich colors of tiebacks.
Living room
For modern high-tech, models with silver and metal details, in harmony with sparkling chrome surfaces, are suitable. The laconicism and rigor of minimalism requires free-falling monochromatic streams for design. You should not use thread curtains in the design, forming complex multi-layer structures. The maximum decoration is an asymmetrical length of the product or bunches collected in discreet tie-backs.
To emphasize the naturalness of rustic and eco-style, pay attention to the choice of material for rope curtains: these can be country thread curtains made from natural fibers of flax, cotton or bamboo.
Thread butterfly curtains look very elegant and festive in the interior. The dense texture of the material, forming the outline of a moth, and the delicate transparent streams of the background will create an atmosphere of a magical garden in the living room.
Bedroom
Here, thread rope curtains must match the character of the owner of the room. Curtains decorated with feathers or beads will suit gentle and romantic young ladies. Designers recommend that married couples opt for traditional beige or light warm colors: free-flowing or gathered textile streams will bring a homely, but at the same time romantic mood to the bedroom.
Thread curtains in the bedroom are used not only to decorate the window opening. Fixed above the bed or on the wall, they will create a charming and magical decoration of the room - a canopy in an oriental style.
Bedroom
Children's
In your baby’s room, don’t limit your imagination and don’t hold back in choosing colors. Rainbow thread curtains in the interior of a children's room will lift the spirits of its inhabitants, maintaining a bright and cheerful atmosphere of the interior space in any weather and circumstances. The design can be draped and assembled with tiebacks in the form of flowers and fairy-tale figures. Decorate the threads themselves with all kinds of decorations: beads, rhinestones, feathers and miniature toy animals.
Advice! Thread curtains will not provide sufficient sun protection in a child's room. Therefore, complement the window design with roller curtains or drapes made of thick, light-proof fabric.
Kitchen
For your workspace, use options made from synthetic fibers. They do not absorb odors and moisture, and repel dirt and dust. A practical and convenient length of freely hanging streams is up to the window sill, but braided and gathered curtains are often used to decorate windows.
By hanging thread curtains in the kitchen in the interior space, it is easy to zone the working and dining areas. The translucent and openwork curtain of jets does not clutter up or make the room smaller. In addition to its separating function, such a curtain will become an original and elegant design decoration.
For any small areas, rope curtains are an excellent method of transforming space. Falling jets create openwork barriers in the right places, separating personal territory or work area. But as soon as you collect, lift or tie the thread curtains, the room again turns into a spacious room, not cluttered with solid and solid partitions.

Installing brackets on a frame or on a wall
Determine where the first bracket will be located and mark the locations for the holes. If you are mounting the bracket on a window frame, drill the holes using a thin wood drill bit (2.5 mm).
If the bracket is mounted on a wall, then use a brick drill with a diameter of 6 mm and dowels of the same size. Install the first bracket and lightly tighten the screws.
Using a long piece of wood and a spirit level, level the shaft horizontally. Then mark points for drilling holes for the second bracket.
High-tech style
If the kitchen interior has a lot of chrome and glass items, curtains with lurex, silver threads with metal beads look harmonious.
Caring for filament curtains
Thread curtains, due to their surface texture, are not too susceptible to contamination, especially when it comes to residential recreational areas: bedroom, living room, office. There are several ways to clean curtains:
- Professional dry cleaning.
- By hand: with a mild soap solution.
- When machine washing, gentle cycles are used for delicate fabrics. But this type of cleaning requires preliminary preparation of the fabric: the strands are divided into 3 parts and braided. Then, to protect the surface of the fibers, the curtains are placed in a laundry bag for delicate items.
Thread curtains do not require ironing. To restore their appearance and shape, simply hang them wet on a curtain rod and straighten the fibers.
Important! Threads decorated with hard fittings are washed only by hand, using a soft cloth and a mild soap solution.
How can I close an arched doorway?
Instead of curtains, the arched opening can be closed
curtains, for example rope type.
If the interior allows, then plastic curtains are not a bad option. Another option is curtains, perhaps
with lambrequins, but they are not suitable for every interior.
