Roller blinds for plastic windows: how to measure, attach, instructions and photos

Roller blinds are the most compact of the existing ones. They allow you to decorate a window opening with a minimum of funds, while at the same time reliably closing the room from prying eyes and sunlight. When making blinds, some companies offer clients a discount if they measure the window size themselves.

Before buying roller blinds, you need to measure the dimensions of the windows

What are standard size roller blinds?

The most popular option is medium-sized fabric roller shutters. The width of the fabric fabric for such products is 600 millimeters, height – 1300 millimeters. In standard sizes you can find different types of roller blinds:

  • Classic plain in any shade;
  • With a design (pattern or photo printing);
  • Day-night is an option that allows you to regulate the flow of light into the room by shifting dark and light stripes;
  • Blackout is an option that provides complete blackout.

Also considered standard is the width of roller blinds from 300 to 900 millimeters. Standard length is 1000-3000 millimeters. Such roller shutters are most often presented in stores and are very popular among customers.

Common mistakes when measuring blinds

The most common errors are:

  • Confused “width” and “length” parameters. When ordering online, people often confuse these two indicators and end up with a product that does not fit the window.
  • 1-2 cm not deducted when ordering blinds with installation in the opening.
  • Inaccurate measurements. We recommend using a metal tape measure to take measurements, but this advice is not always applied in practice. There are cases when people measure the opening with a ruler, a tailor's meter, or use a program on their phone.
  • No measurements taken. Yes, that happens. It may seem that the plastic windows in the same house are all the same. But the width of the sashes in these windows can be different. You can, of course, order blinds into or onto the opening, knowing the approximate width, at your own peril and risk (but not necessary), but you definitely shouldn’t order light filters for the sash in this way.

Measurements with a tape measure and other measuring instruments often differ

Differences from other species

Roller blinds (fabric roller shutters) can be classified as blinds for the home, since they have a similar fastening system and control mechanism. However, this decor does not have lamellas; instead, a single fabric surface is used.

In addition, the method of controlling the canvas is different: the slats rise, tightly compressing each other, and in roller blinds the material is wound onto a shaft and a neat roll is obtained (hence, in fact, the name).

Roller shutters combine the positive qualities of all options:

  • due to the variety of colors and materials, they will fit well into any interior;
  • they can be combined with traditional curtains;
  • provide protection from the sun and prying eyes;
  • the treatment of the fabric gives it a dirt-repellent effect, and therefore the products do not require special care.

If you decide to give up fabric curtains and are wondering what to choose: roller blinds or better blinds, then don’t hesitate - take the former. They are more practical to maintain and look more advantageous, while blinds add a certain touch of office style.

Advantages and disadvantages

When choosing suitable roller curtains to protect windows from light, it is important to know about their strengths and weaknesses. The advantages include:

  • Budget price. The cost of such devices is not too high. The cheapest option is the Mini roll system. It is small in size and is not equipped with a cassette. Allows you to close each door separately.
  • Space saving. In small apartments, curtains and tulle can “eat up” most of the space. When assembled, the roller shutters are practically invisible, and when opened they cover only the opening itself or even a separate transom.
  • Selecting the degree of shading. The canvas can be made of different fabrics. They provide varying degrees of shading: from complete light transmission to 100% impenetrability. This is very convenient for different types of premises.
  • Protection of the canvas from dust and dirt. The fabric of roller shutters is usually impregnated with a dust-repellent, non-flammable or moisture-resistant composition. This makes them invulnerable to fire, spoilage and pollution.
  • Application in any premises. Roller curtains are used in different types of premises: residential and non-residential. Suitable for any room in an apartment, private house or office.
  • Easy care. All you need to do is wipe the roller shutters 2-3 times a week. To do this, you need a dry cloth or a slightly moistened sponge for cleaning.

Roller blinds take up little space and keep the window sill clear.
The disadvantages of roller blinds include vulnerability to moisture and low temperatures. The fabric cannot be washed, only dry cleaned. Among the disadvantages is the simple design, which often has to be supplemented with tulle or curtains.

Varieties

There are two main types of systems, differing in design.

  • Open

Consists of a shaft and canvas. They are not protected by anything and are clearly visible. Therefore, this type is called open.

The equipment is inexpensive, but in some cases the mechanism can have a negative impact on the design of the room. Also, be prepared for the fact that light will still penetrate from the sides: this is especially important when you are buying decor for a bedroom or nursery.

A weighting agent (made of aluminum or plastic) must be provided in the lower part. It is needed for the fabric to stretch.

  • Closed

Here the base is closed on top with a protective cassette, and guides are installed on the sides of the opening. This ensures that the curtain fits snugly against the window and minimizes sun penetration.

The design can blend so well with the profile that in the folded position it is practically invisible. Or, on the contrary, you can choose a contrasting frame that will become an effective addition to the interior.

But the system will cost more, and its installation is more difficult.

Conclusion

Measuring a frame for blinds is not a difficult process, but it must be approached very carefully. An error will result in the work having to be redone, which will incur additional costs. When the position of the handle on the frame is not taken into account or the blade is slightly longer than necessary, the owner, feeling the inconvenience of the mistakes made, will want to get rid of them: he will have to spend money again.

The main thing is maximum care, then the result will not disappoint you

If difficulties arise, the window has a complex shape - it is better to immediately invite a specialist. This will save time, money and nerves.

type of instalation

Curtains can be positioned in different ways, depending on the location of the opening and the need to open it.

  1. On a sash window - the most common option, when the drapery directly covers the glass. This way textiles do not interfere with opening the door and access to the handle is not limited. But you need to take into account that it will no longer be possible to open the window to its full width: the shaft on top will get in the way. There are different placement systems: mini, UNI-1, UNI-2. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages.
  2. For an opening - good when you want to get a curtain similar to a traditional one, because this way the canvas becomes more noticeable. This modification is also chosen for narrow openings, in which the rod on the profile will look ridiculous, and when the installed strip prevents full opening.
  3. In the opening - an intermediate solution between the first and second, when the product is mounted inside the opening. Used in cases where the previous ones are not suitable. It is better not to use this method in the bedroom because of the noticeable gap.

Rules for measuring roller blinds UNI-1 and UNI-2

To obtain the required parameters of the UNI-1 product, you should:

  1. Determine the width - equal to the width of the visible part of the glass.
  2. Determine the height - coincides with the apparent height of the glass.

The parameters of roller blinds UNI-2, which are not suitable for windows with protruding glazing beads, are determined:

  1. Width – along the width of the glass (from the left to the right connection of the profile with the glazing bead).
  2. Height – equal to the height of the sash.

Since the glazing beads may differ in some windows, errors may occur during measurements. It is impossible for a person without special skills and knowledge to prevent this. Step-by-step instructions are powerless here.

Types of window openings and their descriptions

Standard ready-made roller blinds come in two main types:

  • closed;
  • open.

You can understand how to choose roller blinds for plastic windows if you know their main differences. Blinds, which belong to the open variety, are a standard model, fixed on an open shaft. This is the simplest type, which includes fabric and the fastening itself. The roll itself is placed on top of the window. The fastenings are not covered by anything. The advantage is that there is no need to drill the frame or carry out other manipulations. The appearance of the window opening will be preserved if you decide to remove the blinds.

Open roller blinds are mounted on large windows either on the frame or on the opening itself. Products of this variety are usually not very large in width, and magnets are used to fix them. They are installed on the sides and help keep the curtains from sagging and from damage when the doors are opened.

Velcro can be used to attach small items. Additionally, even if you were unable to select the correct width, blinds can in most cases be trimmed at the edges.

Control occurs using a chain mechanism. The fabric is wound on a shaft, so you can adjust the required height. The disadvantage of such decorative elements is considered to be incomplete blocking from light, since they can allow sunlight to pass through on the sides. The advantages include ease of installation and low cost.

Large roller blinds usually require the installation of closed-type fasteners. They provide reliable fixation and, moreover, look more interesting in the interior. The shaft is placed in a closed box, which can be made of plastic or metal. Along the edges of the fabric there are special retaining strips that provide reliable fixation.

This type of product is chosen by those who strive for minimalism. Since all fasteners are hidden under a single-color frame, the effect of completing the window opening is created. You can additionally use tulle in the interior.

Minimalism in the interior with roller blinds

The advantage of this variety is also that it provides complete protection from sunlight. The guides thoroughly fix the fabric, so light will not penetrate into the room. In addition, there are double roller blinds (day - night). They alternate light and dark fabric. If desired, you can completely darken the room or make it bright. To do this, you only need to move the strips relative to each other using a control mechanism. It can be manual or automatic.

Description and types of roller blinds

Roller blinds are a sheet of rigid material attached to a shaft. Using a special mechanism, the canvas rises up and is rolled into a roll. This design on the windows looks laconic and elegant. It does not require complex installation and is easy to maintain. Let's look at the features of roller blinds, their sizes, and what types of such products there are.

A roller blind is one of the easiest ways to decorate a window.

Standard

Designed for double-leaf, standard windows of small dimensions. They can be mounted in the window opening or above it. The height that roller blinds usually have is 2 meters. The maximum width can reach 1.7-1.8 m.

Standard roller blinds are mounted on regular windows of standard sizes.

The average shaft diameter is 25-30 mm. Fasteners and fittings are most often decorated in black, white, bronze, silver or have a transparent structure.

Lux

The shaft diameter here is larger than in the standard version. It can vary between 35-70 mm. Due to this feature, roller blinds can be large in size. Their maximum width reaches up to 3.5 m, and their width – up to 4.5 m. The design also allows you to attach even heavy-weight blackout fabrics. This type of curtains is suitable for windows in spacious rooms: offices, business centers, and factories.

Mini-cassette

Mounted on window sashes. The shaft is very thin, its diameter is no more than 15 mm. When screwed onto the shaft, the blade is hidden under a semicircular aluminum box. Very convenient design. After all, it does not interfere with opening the windows for ventilation.

The mini-cassette roller blind is attached directly to the window sash.

The window sill space also remains uncovered. This makes it possible to use the window sill as a shelf for small items or a flower pot. A good option for small rooms, where the issue of saving space is especially relevant.

Open curtains "Mini"

Like the previous type of curtains, it is mounted on separate window sashes. But there is a difference - the absence of guides. Thanks to this, the cost of “Mini” curtains is less than that of mini-cassette curtains. They are mounted either on plastic brackets or by drilling frames. The first option is only possible if the doors open. It is impossible to install brackets on fixed windows. You'll have to drill the frames.

Depending on the degree of light transmission, there are the following types of roller blinds:

  • Transparent. They let in daylight well. They must be supplemented with curtains and tulle. The main role is decorative.
  • Dimout. Partially lets in daylight. They can also retain heat. They are used in offices, as well as small winter gardens and greenhouses.
  • Blackout. Prevent the passage of daylight into the room. The fabric is multi-layered, light-proof, and creates complete protection from outside light. Suitable for bedrooms, children's rooms, conference rooms, home theaters.
  • "Day Night". The canvas consists of dense and translucent horizontal stripes. The light saturation of the room can be adjusted by shifting the transparent stripes in relation to the opaque ones.

What sizes are roller blinds available?

Roller blinds can have dimensions from 30 – 34 cm. To understand what the dimensions are, you need to refer to the table and the specific manufacturer. The minimum width is 0.3 m. It can be 45 cm, 60 - 65 cm, 75 cm, or more.

Manufacturers often invite customers to decide for themselves what size roller blinds they need. When ordering blinds, you can specify not standard dimensions, but those that are necessary. Most often, this opportunity is used by residents of the private sector, in whose houses window openings of non-standard sizes are usually installed.

Roller blinds in the interior

Roller blinds can reach widths of 110 cm, 130 cm, 190 cm. Some manufacturers offer roller blind widths of 200 - 210 cm, and some even higher than this - 220 - 240 cm and even 300. But more often, roller blinds with an average width of 70 cm are found .

The height of the products is standard in most cases. The dimensions of roller blinds for plastic windows usually have a margin of 180 cm. This is more than enough for a standard frame. However, at the request of the customer, manufacturers can change the dimensions and produce roller blinds with a height of 210 - 250 cm or more. Standard configurations have dimensions 90x160, 120x200, etc.

If you have standard window openings, then you can choose roller blinds for plastic windows according to the standard size.

In other cases, you will need to order the product separately and entrust the measurement of the width of the roller blinds to an employee of the company where you place the order.

Peculiarities

When choosing left- or right-hand control systems, it is necessary to create such a control so that the chain does not get caught in the handles of the structure during operation. This control method is quite simple and ergonomic. The length of the chain component is adjusted depending on the preferences of the owner.

Although roller blinds are quite reliable, simple and cheap, they will not always be appropriate for tilt-and-turn window systems. After all, the maximum recommended height of the material is 150 cm. The fastening system will definitely support it. This is relatively little. With such glass parameters, a small gap may form due to the size of the fastening elements.

When taking measurements of roll systems, it is worth carefully studying the details. Especially when installed using self-tapping screws.

At the customer's request, the canvas is equipped with a top box, as well as directional details. Curtains with a decorative box are mounted with special elements. In this case, there is no need to use spring control elements for the slots and chain. The products are produced in ready-to-install kits. The box is attached to the surface using special clamps, which are located separately for all walls.

How to take measurements - video for reference:

Canvases are produced from materials that are resistant to stains. For rooms with high humidity levels, special types of fabrics are used. Caring for them involves using a brush and a vacuum cleaner.

It is not recommended to use detergents with chemical composition. There may be exceptions where necessary.

Silicone aerosol is used to lubricate the mechanism. It is not recommended to use excessive force when working with spring or chain mechanisms. They will last for a long time.

What errors occur during measurement?

Even if you are sure that you know how to measure a window for roller blinds, sometimes it is impossible to avoid mistakes. To ensure that further installation does not cause difficulties, you need to try to provide for everything. If you do not want to install roller blinds that are too large or narrow, then you need to take measurements at several points.

The most common mistake is to take measurements in only one place. However, sometimes the width or height of typical window openings may vary at several points. Therefore, it is better to measure it in 3 places, and when ordering, indicate not the maximum, but the minimum value so that the decorative element fits.

For roller blinds, it is also important to take into account the dimensions of the roller shutters. The difference due to fastenings may differ by several millimeters. If this is not taken into account, you may end up with blinds that are too wide and extend beyond the frame. This option is primarily inconvenient because the day-night curtain can block access to the handles and touch other elements. In this case, there is a high risk of tearing it off during use.

We recommend: Environmental friendliness or quality: do you need to make a choice?

Determining the dimensions required for installing roller blinds is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. Since the height of most finished products is standard, experts advise paying more attention to the width. If you make a mistake with it, then there may be gaps in the window openings through which light will penetrate. For open type fastenings, the fabric can most often be cut, so the wide fabric can be adjusted to the desired size. Write down all the information you receive so you don't forget anything. And remember that individual double-glazed windows sometimes require rolls of different widths. Do not forget to measure each glass so as not to make a mistake with the size.

The video shows how to measure and install roller blinds:

How to avoid mistakes

Simple rules will help you avoid errors in measurements. By following them, you can choose the perfect curtains for each window.

  1. Take measurements in 2-3 places. Often the width and height of windows differ at different points. Therefore, it is necessary to take measurements at several points, compare the results and select the most appropriate value.
  2. Take into account the dimensions of the roller shutters.
    Roller shutters come in open and closed types. The first option is cheaper, it can be adjusted in width if it was not possible to measure the width correctly. But there is a significant drawback - the curtains quickly become dirty. For closed-type products, the canvas is hidden in a box and does not get dirty so quickly, although the price is higher. Due to the plugs and fastenings, the width of the roller shutter is 0.3-0.5 mm greater than the width of the fabric. If you do not take these dimensions into account, the canvas will have to be trimmed after installation. It is also necessary to clarify the depth of the mechanism. This parameter will determine whether the sash will open normally or not.
  3. Pay attention to the location of the handles for opening the sash. When opened, the roll should not extend beyond the handle. Otherwise, the canvas will interfere with opening and closing the window. If the curtain catches on anything during use, the structure may break. The overhanging lower part will become dirty and deformed, touching the window sill.

To avoid mistakes, you should remember that you need to take into account the dimensions of the roller shutters and the location of the handles on the window.

We calculate the sizes ourselves

To avoid possible discrepancies in the sizes of your windows and roller curtains, you need to take careful measurements. Only then will the product you choose match the window slot as closely as possible and allow you to install the curtains on the frames as accurately as possible.

The easiest way to take the necessary measurements is to use a handy measuring tape. It is best to measure the frame at several points in order to take into account all uneven places and small distortions.

Important! Before starting measurements, you must take into account which curtain system will be used, as well as the method of its attachment.

We take measurements.

  1. If installation will be carried out on a wall, measure the width of the opening and add 1 cm on all sides.
    This will avoid the occurrence of gaps on the sides of the slopes. Calculate the required size of roller blinds
  2. In the same way, we measure the height of the opening, adding another 5 cm to the result obtained. If the window has a protruding window sill, then the canvas should not touch it, take this into account.
    We measure the width and height of the glass and window sash
  3. If the roller shutter is attached to the opening, then it will subtract 1-2 cm in height and width from the measurements obtained.

    We measure the depth of the glazing bead in order to determine which roller blind system will suit us best

  4. When installing on a window frame, the starting measurement points should be located at the outer edges of the glass. Add another 4 cm to the height.
  5. If you are planning a floor-length vertical roller blind with a ceiling mounting system, then you need to measure the height of the wall to the ceiling, it is advisable to take into account the width of the cornice, if present.
    Do not forget that you will have to subtract 1-2 cm from this size to avoid the canvas coming into contact with the floor and deforming it. The standard length of the canvas is 160-170 cm, cut to the desired length on site
  6. If you need to attach a roller curtain to only one window sash, measure its width from the outer edge to the handle. We subtract half a centimeter from the obtained value, this is necessary so that the edges of the canvas do not break when opening the sash. You need to subtract one to two centimeters from the length of the sash.
    Determining the size of a roller blind on a window with a handle

    When choosing a ready-made roller blind for a balcony door, you need to take into account that its standard size is 68*215 cm

In order for roller blinds to fit perfectly and serve for a long time, you need to take into account several important factors.

  • fastening type;

    Mounting options for roller blinds

  • features of materials;

    Variety of fabrics for roller blinds

  • the style in which the room is decorated;
    Striped roller blinds look great in a country style kitchen
  • the level of illumination in the room and the level of transparency of the curtain material.

Most of these criteria are easy to find out; just carefully study the product catalog provided by the curtain store. You can take measurements yourself. But if you are not confident in your abilities, it is better to involve specialists in measuring manipulations.

When you need to visually stretch a room, install roller blinds from the ceiling

How to take measurements

You need to measure 2 parameters: width and height. Since the height of curtains is usually standard, special attention should still be paid to the width. Measurements are taken with the window closed. To do this, you will need a regular tape measure with a measurement accuracy of up to a millimeter. Depending on the type of installation, measurements are taken differently:

  • To the opening. The desired allowance on both sides is added to the width of the window opening.
  • Inside the opening. For this type of installation, the height and width of the window opening are measured to the nearest mm. But it is necessary to take into account the unevenness of the window opening.
  • Separately for each transom. It is necessary to measure the width of the glass to the frame. Then add 2-3 cm on each side. If there is a handle on the sash, then add the distance to the handle to the width of the glass. Then we make an allowance of 2 cm on the other side of the curtain.

Important! Due to the design features, roller blinds of the “Day-Night” type require more space in depth - 30-50 mm.

Height is measured from the top to the bottom edge of the sash. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the presence of a bead. If it is figured, rounded or beveled, then 2-5 mm is added to the measured height to overlap the bead.

Depending on the type of roller blind, window measurements are taken in different ways.

Measurements for “Mini” curtains

Open roller blinds “Mini” are usually used as a decorative element on any type of plastic windows, giving them an attractive look. From a functional point of view, Mini roller blinds can perform both the function of shading a room from bright sunlight, and serve as an element that isolates the room from prying eyes, especially if they are installed on a door with transparent glazing.

Typically, in typical apartments, window and door sizes are standard. Therefore, in stores you can find roller blinds of standardized widths that comply with current GOST standards for windows and doors. But, if you decide to install roller blinds on the windows of a private house, in which the windows or doors differ from the accepted SNiP, you will have to either order the production of such curtains in a workshop, or in a company that installs windows and doors from PVC profiles and completing its products with various accessories.

Typically, roller blinds are installed in such a way that they completely cover the window opening - in case the window does not open or is rarely used. In this case, the size of the curtains should be 5 cm wider than the window opening on each of its sides and 1-15 cm longer than the height of the window opening.

It is not difficult to take measurements in this case. It is enough to measure the width of the plastic window along the edge of the slopes facing the room and add 10 cm to the resulting value. Depending on how you want to install roller blinds - right under the ceiling, or at some distance from it, to determine the length of the curtain you need to measure distance from the selected installation point of the cornice to the bottom edge of the window sill and add 10-15 cm to the resulting length.

Roller blinds are usually shortened and do not extend to the floor. Yes, this is not necessary. Because their purpose is similar to blinds. If necessary, block off excess light and adjust the lighting in the room.

Another option for installing roller blinds is to install them directly into the opening of a window or door sash. In this case, the cornice with a winding device is attached directly to the plastic profile. Since the profile of a plastic window or door has different widths and the bead holding the glass unit can be straight or beveled, the width of the roller blinds may vary slightly.

If the glazing bead has a right angle, then the dimensions of the roller blinds in width are measured according to the size of the glass - width and height. In this case, the roller blinds will fit tightly to the window or door glass and almost completely cover it.

If the glazing bead is beveled, the dimensions of the roller blinds in width are determined by the edges of the side glazing beads, and in length - they must correspond to the length of the side glazing bead. In this case, the roller blinds will be slightly spaced from the glass and light from the street will be visible through small gaps between the curtain and the window profile.

In order to prevent the roller blind from sagging when the window is tilted to the “ventilation” position, several magnets can be installed on the glazing bead of the window sash, at different heights in those places at which the roller blinds most often open.

Professional help

Practice shows that when measured, standard windows are not rectangular; their size varies slightly at different fixation points. For large sizes, roller blinds are needed specifically for panoramic glazing, the measurement of which is best entrusted to a specialist. For large-scale structures, it is necessary to take into account several attachment points and take measurements several times.

Unfortunately, window openings are often uneven, as are the windows themselves, even plastic ones.

For window openings of non-standard shape, only a specialist can determine the size measurement algorithm. For options with a rounded top part, it will be difficult to make blinds due to the way the roller blinds are attached. Measurements include determining the parameters of the circle, choosing a fastening method - this cannot be done without knowing exactly what tools and technologies the company has.

Decorating an arched window using roller blinds is quite difficult

Important! Such designs are created only on an individual basis; it is impossible to find them in the catalog.

Perhaps the best solution would be to abandon roller blinds in favor of other models that allow you to design non-standard window openings, for example, pleated curtains look good in an arch

It is difficult to figure out how to install blinds in a bay window - it is better to invite a specialist to take measurements. He will offer several options for placing roller blinds so that there are no gaps at the edges, and all the windows look like a single composition.

It is important to choose the option that is optimal for each window in the bay window

Depending on the availability of free space for the fastening mechanism, the following designs are used:

  • open or closed type;
  • mechanical or automatic;
  • a professional selects the shape of the guides.

Dimensions of cassette curtains

Measurements of “cassette” type roller blinds are made somewhat differently. They come in two standard sizes UNI1 and UNI2, depending on whether they are intended for installation on an opening window sash or on a non-opening window. The method of attaching them to the plastic profile is also different. In the first case, the mounting brackets are L-shaped and snap onto the upper end of the window frame and are additionally fixed with double-sided foam tape. And UNI2 curtains, instead of L-shaped brackets, are equipped with flat fasteners, which are fixed to the PVC profile only with double-sided tape.

The second difference between “cassette” roller blinds and “Mini” curtains is the presence of two guides along which a weight bar attached to the end of the curtain slides, thereby preventing sagging in any position of the window or the curtains being rolled up by the wind or draft.

For windows with straight glazing beads, measurements are made in the same way as for “Mini” - according to the size of the window glass. The guides are attached to the inner surface of the side beads and the curtain fits very tightly to the glass.

If the glazing bead is beveled, then the width of the roller blinds of the “cassette” type UNI2 is determined by the outer edges of the side glazing beads, since the guides in this case are glued to the front plane of the glazing bead. The length is also determined by the outer, frontal length of the side beads.

Installation instructions

As an example, consider one of the options for installing the Uni system.

  1. After carefully unpacking, check the completeness of the product. The control chain is released. By slightly lowering the fabric, remove the side covers from the control unit located on the cornice.
  2. The product is applied to the window to check (on both sides) the symmetry of the gap between the canvas and the window bead. Use a pencil or awl to mark the locations of the fasteners.
  3. Using self-tapping screws, secure the cornice to the vertical glazing beads of the window.
  4. Place the covers on the control unit and check the functionality of the product.
  5. The places where the side guides will be glued are degreased with acetone or solvent.
  6. Remove the protective film from the side guide, insert its upper edge under the side cover of the control unit and, pressing, evenly glue the guide.
  7. Do the same with the other guide.
  8. Using a control chain, the panel is lowered until it touches the rubber seal of the window bead. Install a control chain limiter.
  9. Install the control chain retainer using self-tapping screws. Place the lid on it and snap it on.

Necessary measurements before installation

They need to be completed not even before installation, but at an even earlier stage - before purchase. If you miss the width and height, the fabric may interfere with the opening and closing of the window. After a few weeks of use, the corner of the cornice will easily crumble the putty on the slope and hollow out a small but unsightly depression in it. Moreover, clinging to the handle of the glass unit, the cut edge will fray, and the structure itself will fall off the Velcro. And problems with darkening cannot be avoided - there will always be gaps.

Measurements are performed with a regular tape measure. Having decided what type of roller curtains you want, determine the width, height of the opening and individual sashes. Let us remind you that you can adjust a long open-type roller shutter to the desired size. This is generally not difficult, but you will have to tinker.

You will need:

  • pencil
  • tape measure or ruler
  • scissors, stationery knife
  • metal hacksaw for shortening the rod
  • file (sandpaper will also work).

You can work on the floor, because not every home has tables that can accommodate an unfolded curtain. You will have to disassemble it into individual components: shaft, fabric (or bamboo), weighting material.

How to shorten a curtain

  1. Cut the rod exactly to the required width. Finish the edge with a file or sandpaper to remove nicks.
  2. Mark the canvas exactly how you want to cut it. It should be 8–10 mm narrower than the shaft. Use only well-sharpened scissors.
  3. Using a hacksaw, adjust the length of the finishing strip so that the curtain is 10–15 mm wider than it.
  4. Now you can assemble the components again into a single system: tuck the curtain into the weighting material, put it on the shaft, secure the plugs and roll the material into a roll.

How to shorten without disassembling the structure

  • remove the weighting material,
  • cut the curtain
  • Make a “pocket pipe” at the bottom along the diameter of the bar and insert it there.

  • From the inside. Measurements are taken at least at three points b and h. The height of the opening is the minimum. For angular slopes, a mark is made at the point where the canvas is supposed to be hung in the future. b = b opening – 5 mm. h = h of the opening.
  • On the frame. Measure the data for b glazing bead and h frame. The minimum distance between the fabric and the base of the handle is about a centimeter. Marks are made on the fabric.

Window measurement

In order for roller blinds to have an aesthetic appearance and high practicality, you need to understand how to measure correctly. Roller blinds are divided into several types, and each has its own characteristics of taking measurements.

Classic version

To correctly measure curtains that will subsequently be used for plastic windows, you first need to find out exactly where the roller blinds will be mounted. They can be attached to the window frame itself or on the window opening.

What measurements need to be taken:

  1. Curtain width – “B”. Minimum width – 50 cm, maximum – 300 cm.
  2. Height – “H”. The minimum curtain height is 50 cm, the maximum is 300 cm.
  3. The length of roller blinds is marked “L”. The minimum length is 27 cm and ad infinitum.

Each type of roller blind has its own acceptable dimensions. They directly depend on the type of material from which they are made. The control length cannot be less than 2/3 of the finished product.

Fastening directly to the window opening:

  1. “H” depends on the length of the protruding parts of the window sill. If the window sill is flush, then the dimensions are at your discretion.
  2. If installation is carried out on a wall, boundaries must be respected. The distance between the roller blind and the ceiling must be at least 7 cm; it must be carefully measured.

Cassette

Uni-1 cassette roller blinds are measured as follows:

  • “B” is measured along the width of the glass unit, along the vertical of the window. The measurement is taken very accurately.
  • “H” measurements are carried out in the same way as “B”, only horizontally. Which side the control will be located on is determined individually - at the request of the customer.
  • Level “H” depends on calculations and is 2/3 of the length of the product.

Uni 2 must be measured very carefully. The location of the fittings on the plastic window is of great importance when taking measurements:

  • “B” is equal to the width of the glass unit + 6.8 cm. We must not forget that the width of the product is 2 cm less, that is, a minimum of 25 cm and a maximum of 120 cm.
  • “H” is equal to the distance between the top of the upper plug and the bottom of the lower plug of the guidance system. The minimum is 20 cm and the maximum is 150 cm.

Determining the size of roller blinds according to the Mini type:

  1. The mount is installed on the window frame. To do this, measurements are taken “B” (directly of the double-glazed window itself), then you need to add the width of the glazing bead, it is approximately 0.4 cm. The remaining dimensions are calculated in the same way. Then you should choose a convenient side to control the curtain mechanism. The approximate length of the lace is 2/3 of “H”.
  2. In the event that a metal-plastic window is opened for ventilation, fixing chips for curtains are attached to its lower part. The clamps are needed so that during ventilation the roller blinds or blinds do not sweep away everything on the windowsill.

The following locking options are available:

  • magnetic latches;
  • fishing line

There are several ways to attach a curtain rod:

  • using screws;
  • on special double-sided tape;
  • suspended structure.

Roman

First, you need to decide where exactly this curtain will be located. Such a curtain can also be installed on a metal-plastic window or on the window opening itself. You need to be very careful when taking measurements during internal installation.

To determine the size of the Roman model, you need to take measurements “H” and “B”. Using the measurements taken, carry out the necessary calculations:

  • add 15 cm to “B”;
  • add 20 cm to “H”;
  • at the end of installation, “B” and “H” are approximately 0.8 cm smaller.

"Day Night"

This type of curtains can also be installed on a metal-plastic frame or on a window opening. When it comes to Day-Night curtains, you need to calculate the following: add 1.5 cm to “B” and 15 cm to “H”.

If the curtain is attached directly to a metal-plastic frame, measurements are taken in three places “B” and three places “H”. We take the smallest values as the height of the opening. If there are corner slopes, measurements are taken from the place where the curtain will hang in the future. “B” is equal to “B” of the window opening minus 5 mm. “N” equals “N” of the window opening.

For frame allowances, measurements of the height of the glazing bead and the width of the window frame are used. The distance between the curtain and the handle on the window should be approximately 1 cm, you can mark it on the fabric. It’s worth trying on as carefully as possible.

How to correctly take window measurements for roller blinds with fastening inside the opening

If you choose a model with fastening inside the opening, try to measure as accurately as possible, taking into account every millimeter. If you determine the dimensions incorrectly, the curtain rod you purchased may simply not fit into the window opening and further installation of the curtain will become impossible.

When measuring the width of a window opening, you need to take into account the unevenness of the walls, so measurements are taken in three places, and the minimum value is selected for calculations. It is also necessary to do the same when measuring the height of the opening.

  • From the smallest value of the opening width, subtract 1 cm and get the overall width of the product. Taking into account the fastenings, the width of the curtain fabric will be 1.5 - 2 cm smaller.
  • We calculate the height of the product in the same way - subtract 1 cm from the minimum value. The length of the fabric in this case will correspond to the height of the window opening to the window sill.

The next step in the design of a window group is the choice of the type and location of the lifting mechanism, the density and design of the curtain fabric.

We install the structure without drilling

The roller blinds are assembled according to the same principle as described above. The main difference is the method of attaching the brackets. Without screws or drilling, they are glued to the sash, or attached to special hooks to the upper edge of the sash.

Hooks are applicable if the width of the sash and the seal allow this. The bracket is assembled according to the manufacturer's instructions. The shaft is mounted on the installed brackets similar to the drilling method. In this method, it is important not to forget to check that the bracket latches do not interfere with closing the window.

As for fasteners with an adhesive layer, everything is simple. The first step is to thoroughly degrease the surface where the structure will be glued. Then everything follows according to the instructions. By the way, the adhesive base can be additionally lubricated with glue - this will be more reliable.

Mini

How to measure dimensions in a Mini type design:

Installation is carried out immediately on the window sash. In this case, b of the light opening is measured. b beading bead and mechanism are added (about 0.4 cm). Other values are calculated in the same way. Next, select the control side. The size of its chain is 2/3 of h.

If the sash has a tilt-and-turn mechanism, an additional lock for the lower cornice is installed. This will help to ventilate so that the flaps do not hang over the window sills.

The lower cornice clamp can be equipped with:

  • by installing magnets on the sash with screws;
  • construction of a fishing line with brackets.

The upper cornice is attached in three ways:

  • screws;
  • using a special pad on adhesive tape;
  • hanging brackets - for the sash.

Features of caring for roller blinds

Favorite places for dust and dirt particles to accumulate are the folds of the fabric and the upper surface of the roller. As a rule, this happens if the roller blind has not been used for more than one week.

The simplest and most effective way to dry clean roller blinds is to use a vacuum cleaner. To do this, you need to remove the roller with the canvas, after first lifting the roller blind.

Carefully spread it on a flat surface and use a vacuum cleaner at a low power level to prevent the fabric from “chewing” or bending.

If there are fresh stains on the fabric, for example, left by fingers. An alcohol wipe works great; just gently rub it over the stained area to completely get rid of the new stain.

You can also use a regular eraser for this purpose.

If a stagnant stain is found on the roller blind and the methods described above did not help, then you can use the wet method of cleaning the roller blinds.

The simplest and most accessible way is to use a regular sponge and dishwashing detergent. Apply a few drops of detergent to the soft side of the sponge, squeeze the sponge a little until foam appears, and then walk the damp surface over the dirty area.

If the contamination is extensive and it is not possible to remove it with improvised means, then the most correct decision would be to seek professional help from a dry cleaner.

The open control mechanism also requires a little attention, which will have to be lubricated from time to time, no more than once a year. Any silicone-based lubricant is suitable for this.

Using a cassette roller blind on a plastic window with blackout fabric in a children's room together with patterned tulle. It will completely isolate the room from daylight. And the side guides will prevent the penetration of angular light by hiding the gap between the edge of the fabric with plastic guides.

  • The fabrics of roller blinds are impregnated with a special composition. This will allow the roller blinds not to fade in the sun and are not afraid of dirt.
  • Dust and pet hair do not stick to roller blinds. Luckily, the housewife doesn’t even need to wash them, but simply wipe them with a cloth.
  • In some models of roller blinds, antibacterial substances are used in the impregnation composition
  • Roller blinds do not wrinkle
  • The lowering and raising of the fabric roller shutter is controlled using control mechanisms, which eliminates touching the fabric, allowing you to avoid unnecessary contamination. And making the light supply process smoother and more accurate.
  • Combine decorativeness and functionality
  • Compact, when closed the roller blind is practically invisible.

Useful tips

Professionals shared practical tips for installing roller blinds. Study them carefully:

  • the same curtain will be of different lengths depending on the chosen attachment option.
  • When attached to the ceiling, it is easier to model curtains. It’s okay to make a mistake of 1-2 cm, since the fabric will cover the window opening. Take the roller shutter fabric 10 cm wider than the window frame, and as long as you need;
  • when mounting to the wall, take into account the box size of about 5 cm;
  • when installing in a window frame, the material should be 4 cm narrower than the window niche;
  • The width of the fabric for roller blinds with PVC guides should be equal to the width of the glass. In this case, the guides are attached to the glazing beads;
  • for Mini roller blinds, canvas = glass width + 3 cm: one for the glazing bead at the window handle, two on the hinge side;
  • if the roller blind has a guide string, then the width of the material should be equal to the width of the glass plus 3 cm so that there are no gaps;
  • Before installation, measure the length of the bracket. It should be sufficient so that the shaft does not touch the wall;
  • with any type of fastening, the uncovered section of the chain mechanism must be directed downward. If you place it incorrectly, the roller blind will not work;

Measurements with installation in front of the opening

If the method of installation on the wall in front of the opening is best suited for your window, then you have more opportunities to choose the height and width of the curtain according to your own needs. You can choose roller blinds that cover only the outline of the window, or you can purchase a model that will hide part of the wall around it. Using this type of installation, Blackout products are often installed, which provide the greatest protection from sunlight. Read more : Features of choosing Blackout Blackout roller blinds

For standard sizes of roller blinds, the following calculation formula is applicable:

  • Width = Opening width + 10 cm.
  • Length = Opening height + 15 cm.

It should be remembered that the height of the product is measured from the place where the curtain is attached to the window sill or lower, as necessary. The width is also selected taking into account the desired overlap on both sides of the window opening.

In this case, the control cord for the lifting mechanism can be located on either side of the curtain, whichever is more convenient for you - left or right. Read in detail : About all the mechanisms of roller blinds

Due to the variety of shapes and types of window frames, some disagreements may arise with the measurement schemes presented in the article. If your window was installed according to an individual project, or has a non-standard shape or size, in order to avoid mistakes, it is better to contact a specialist installing roller blinds. In any case, regardless of which method of measuring, purchasing and installing fabric roller blinds you choose, the main thing is that the end result brings you only positive emotions.

How to hang it correctly

This type of Mini is installed on the window sash:

  • self-tapping screws

Having attached the brackets to the frame, screw them into the mounting holes with two self-tapping screws. Next, having inserted latches with gears into the pipe with the canvas, insert it into a standard bracket. It is enough to press lightly on the pipe, the latches with gears will go inside, and a click should be heard. Finally, bracket covers are installed as a decorative structural element. • using a metal or plastic spring bracket

Installation is carried out only on the opening frame sash. Hinged plastic spring brackets snap into standard ones and repeat the same steps as in the installation method with self-tapping screws.

In the case of metal hinged brackets, the only difference is the process of connecting them with standard ones - the hinged petals are pre-bent when connecting;

  • on sticky tape

The gluing attachments snap onto the brackets. Degrease the areas of the window profile where the product will be glued, and heat the tape with a hairdryer. Remove the protective film from it and, pressing tightly, glue it to the surface. The remaining steps are the same as standard. Read more : How to hang curtains on windows without drilling

It must be remembered that, regardless of the chosen fastening method, the uncovered section of the chain mechanism must face down.

Roll-cassette types

Mini-cassettes are practically the same as roller blinds, only they are assembled into a cornice that looks like a compact cassette.
This type is optimal for folding sashes of Euro windows: plastic or aluminum and even wooden. Therefore, the name was assigned to them - roller blinds for PVC windows. Today, the most popular options are those with a box and guides of the Uni and Rollite systems. The box and guides are made of aluminum. In both designs, strips of double-sided tape are provided on the side rails, with the help of which the guides are glued to the window sash.

Rollite types can be mounted on plastic windows with a minimum glass depth of 6 mm. At the same time, the side guides are equipped with thick double-sided tape.

with U-shaped guides

If Uni systems are mounted on PVC windows with slightly recessed glass (less than 14 mm), then use their modified version Uni 2, which has U-shaped side guides and is equipped with special linings under the frame that move the panel away from the glass.

Cassettes are controlled by one chain. With its help, you can raise or lower and fix the curtain fabric at the required height. A special lock installed on the frame protects the chain from sagging. It holds the chain when opening the window for ventilation.

How to measure cassette-type roller blinds

Correct installation of this system requires competent and accurate measurements of the window structure.

If the beads are straight, then:

  • the width is equal to the width of the glass, that is, the distance between the vertical glazing beads;
  • the height is equal to the height of the glass, that is, the distance between the horizontal glazing beads.

If the beads are beveled, then:

  • the greatest distance between them is taken as the width.
  • Measurements are carried out with an accuracy of 1 mm.

Each kit necessarily includes detailed instructions for installing roller blinds (with pictures).
