What it is

The appearance of the frame and the surface underneath may deteriorate over time and require restoration. Therefore, it is useful to learn how to update a plastic window sill without removing it. For this purpose special products are used. Helps eliminate surface imperfections and signs of wear. Large selection of shapes and shades.

The restoration process is new and consists of selecting and installing a professional window sill trim. A small reconstruction provides an opportunity to economically refresh the appearance of the window and restore its shape, taking into account the functionality of the slab.

This will not take much time, the process will not damage the window structure and finishing elements (wallpaper, paint). The advantage is that you can install it yourself. But a restoration process of this type is only possible if the base slab is up to 6 cm thick.

Thin profiled sheets are used as materials for finishing and surface repairs. The workpiece is used for coating at the finishing stage.

The use of a metal-plastic base allows you to maintain the strength of the structure. The surface is hard, but at the same time durable and thin.

After such work, the window sill becomes resistant to fire, sunlight, moisture, and temperature changes.

Benefits of overlays

You can purchase and install an overlay not only for the restoration of a window sill, but also in cases where you simply want to update the decor in the room or completely change the color scheme of the interior.
Made from the same material as the window itself, the linings look organic with plastic structures, and the profiled edge and special plugs allow you to hide unevenness and other shortcomings of a PVC window sill that has become unusable. The use of overlays provides the consumer with many advantages:

  • quick (about 45 minutes), uncomplicated installation using construction adhesive allows you to complete the entire procedure yourself, without the involvement of professional installers;
  • You can change the color scheme of the window sill at will at any frequency (tired of the color, change the wallpaper);
  • the linings are easy to maintain and, like a regular plastic window sill, can be washed with special cleaning agents;
  • low price category: a white lining costs from 300 rubles/m2, and a colored one from 1300 rubles/m2, while the price of a whole window sill starts from 1000 rubles. and from 3000 rub. respectively.

Installation is carried out on top of the old window element. You cannot use the trim instead of a window sill.

If we compare the advantages of plastic linings, it is worth highlighting:

  • affordable price;
  • installation can be done without professional skills;
  • large selection of colors to suit the design of the room;
  • you can change the shape and size of the main plate;
  • long period of service.

Kinds

There are two types of overlays:

  • PVC;
  • MDF panels.

Each of them is considered in detail. Plastic products come in different colors. For example, white or displaying a pattern of wood or marble. The following materials are used for installation:

  • wooden;
  • concrete;
  • stone;
  • tiled.

Products are selected 2 cm wider than the base. This is necessary to prevent cracks. Additionally, plugs are selected. The material is the same, it should be suitable in width and shape. Standard sizes:

  • width – 15-52 cm;
  • length – 3 m;
  • thickness – 3.5 mm.

MDF overlays with a dropper are used to restore the old plate. They have a limited selection of colors. There are no end caps.

They are less common in sales than plastic products. They need to be chosen wider by 6-8 cm. The drip tray performs the main function and covers the old window sill. The size is selected according to the type and dimensions of the slab.

Before restoring a plastic window sill, the following criteria should be taken into account:

  • the color must match the shade of the window structure;
  • pay attention to qualities and properties;
  • rules of care, the ability to use detergents;
  • calculate the dimensions correctly;
  • the presence of plugs that correspond to the dimensions of the slab.

Self-installation of the lining

Replacing a window sill will require the involvement of professional specialists, while you can install the plastic lining yourself; this does not require special knowledge, complex tools or a long period of time. In addition to the lining itself and the end caps that usually come with it, you will need: degreaser (any solvent), assembly adhesive (liquid nails), silicone, a hand saw with fine teeth, a pencil and a ruler. All these materials and tools are usually in the “arsenal” of a home craftsman; in extreme cases, they can be purchased at a hardware store.

  1. The linings offered in stores have different dimensions (length, width), you can determine the necessary parameters by measuring the existing window sill and adding a few centimeters in reserve. The overlay can be easily “adjusted” to an individual size, taking into account, for example, the angle at which the slopes are located. To do this, we carefully measure the parameters of the existing window sill, carefully make markings on the purchased part and cut off the excess with a hacksaw.
  2. In order for the product to fit perfectly to the window, you need to make a paper template and fit the side edges of the lining according to it.
  3. We glue the prepared element onto the window sill. To ensure a strong and reliable connection, before applying glue to the surface, it must be leveled, if there are any unevenness, and degreased with a solvent. You should not “spread” the glue over the entire surface; it is enough to make a dense dotted line along the edges, and a zigzag in the middle.
  4. Carefully apply the overlay, carefully aligning the edges. Then we press evenly over the entire surface and place a load (a stack of books) on top. Particular attention should be paid to the side edges.
  5. Let the glue “set”, this will take no more than 15-20 minutes, after which we remove the load and remove the thin transparent protective film from the lining.
  6. Slowly, carefully fill the gap formed between the wall, window frame and trim with silicone. To do this, squeeze the silicone out of the cartridge, and before it hardens, smooth it with your finger, previously moistened with plain water.
  7. We also carefully measure the end caps, cut them off and glue them to the side surfaces of the window sill. We also fill all the gaps with silicone, smoothing out the seam.

A little more than half an hour has passed, and you have a new beautiful window sill that harmoniously matches the interior of the room. However, we should not forget that the durability of the window sill and the entire window structure depends not only on the technical characteristics of the product, but also on compliance with operating rules. Do not place hot objects on it, do not overfill water when watering indoor flowers, do not expose it to mechanical damage, and do not use aggressive cleaning agents. In this case, the restored element will serve you for a long time. And when you get tired of it, the cover can be removed again and replaced with a new one.

How to choose overlays?

Thanks to the availability of different colors, you can take into account and beautifully “beat” the tone of wallpaper, curtains or window frames. There are different colors - from white to “marble”. The cheapest usually (as with windows and window sills) are white products. The proposed surface, and it is glossy in this case, makes it easy to clean such a window sill and does not accumulate dust in cracks (as previously, after damage). But not all detergents are suitable for cleaning (abrasive ones are not).

When planning to install such an overlay yourself, keep in mind that you can save money on a specialist, but installing it yourself is incorrect. It will be much more difficult to tear off and dismantle the defect. Well, and most importantly, the price of such products is 2-3 times cheaper than if you decided on a more radical method of restoration - installing a new window sill.

So don’t save at least on the cost of the lining, so as not to start updating and repairing again, in a few weeks or months. If you are willing to take responsibility and take risks, you can calmly solve the problem of old or damaged window sills. We hope our advice will help you with this.

More light, cleanliness and space

A white window sill board is an elegant element of the interior that looks advantageous in any design style: strict classics, romantic Provence, laconic minimalism and modern loft. The light finish of the lower slope instantly transforms the space, erases its boundaries and creates the illusion of infinity, which is very important in miniature living rooms. However, this does not mean that snow-white panels are not used to decorate the openings of large rooms. On the contrary, light accessories unload the space, making it weightless and “transparent”. In such a room you can relax, forget about problems and immerse yourself in relaxation.

And snow-white plastic boards are a universal basis for rich accents. To understand this, it is enough to place pots of raspberry, light green or azure color on it. You will see - the room will instantly be transformed, filled with dynamic and playful colored notes. Decorative pillows in rich colors will be an equally effective addition to the window. And if you decorate the window with bright Roman blinds, you will get a truly bold tandem.

If you are not a supporter of bright inclusions in the interior, then ordinary, standard panels will definitely suit you. This is a classic that never loses its relevance. Unlike colored products, these attributes will not lose their relevance either in a year or in ten years. In addition, they look natural with decorative decorations (vases, flower pots), wall coverings and furniture in any style. And if red products look great in the High-Tech style, they will not fit into the gentle Country at all. But white accessories look great everywhere, so you can change the design of the room at least every year.

Eventually

Thus, if the appearance of your window sill has become unusable, although it itself is still durable, or you are not satisfied with the color scheme, you can easily order an inexpensive overlay for any size and color and install it yourself.
