/Accessories and decor/Curtains/

Decorating a kitchen in today's fashionable country style variations requires a “rustic” style of curtains. These can be cafe curtains, curtains with lambrequins or beautiful arched curtains.

Pros and cons of curtains, tulle arch for the kitchen

From the name you can understand that these curtains look like an arch. These curtains are usually used in country style rooms. They pair well with natural materials and other rustic decor.

The advantages of arch curtains include:

  • Due to their short length, they free up a lot of space on the windowsill.
  • They do not interfere with the penetration of light, fresh air and heat from the radiator into the kitchen.
  • They do not hide space like longer options.
  • Suitable for small kitchens with a work area near the window.

Arch curtains are convenient for a small room, as they do not take up much space.
This type of curtain also has its disadvantages:

  • They do not shade the room, which is especially noticeable on south-facing windows.
  • You can’t close them at night, so it’s better to use roller blinds or blinds with them.
  • You cannot hide batteries and pipes behind them.
  • It is dangerous to hang them next to the stove.
  • Arch curtains will not fit into the modern interior style.

Arched curtains have several disadvantages.
Such curtains are perfect for a rustic-style kitchen, where it is important to keep the window sill space free and where there is no need to diffuse sunlight.

A few words about fastening

As is clear from the above, there are several options for attaching arches to the cornice. To attach it to a curtain strip, you need a cornice with a rail structure on hooks. To attach to decorative hinges, choose a cornice with a round cross-section; for Velcro, you need a square cross-section. Due to the lightness of the textile, the curtain rods can be quite thin. They can be attached both to the wall and to the ceiling (this is especially true if the ceilings in the room are low).

Arch curtain design options

The design of the arch curtain can be completely different. Depending on other details in the room, choose a curtain with pleats or a plain one, made of transparent fabric or a denser material.

Arched curtains can be of different designs.

They also differ in length. In the classic version, the edges of such a curtain reach the window sill, but it is also possible to make a shortened model that will cover only the upper part alone.

Arched curtains can be decorated with various elements. It can be:

  1. fringe;
  2. decorative cords;
  3. lace;
  4. ruffles.

If necessary, the window textiles can be combined with other decorative elements, you can use contrasting ribbons.

The arched curtain can be combined with light curtains along the edges.

Different fabrics are used to sew curtains. There is a different option for each interior:

  • linen;
  • organza;
  • tulle;
  • net.

Transparent fabrics look good on eastern and northern windows, where there is a problem with lack of light.

Natural fabrics are a good solution for a rustic style. The advantage of this curtain model is its shape, thanks to which it gets dirty less, so you can choose the fabric based on external features, and not on performance characteristics.

It is better to give preference to natural materials.

Semicircular windows: style direction

Semicircular window openings today are an innovation in the architecture of houses and attract the attention of others, but such frames arose many centuries ago and were considered an item of luxury and high status for the owners of the premises. Walls with semicircular windows look stylish, noble and simply attractive. It is worth noting that if the bay window is decorated with semicircular windows, then such decor will 100% attract the attention of others.

Such window frames are especially common in buildings of such styles as:

  • Romanism;
  • Russian tower;
  • Gothic;
  • Classicism;
  • Morocco;
  • Arab;
  • Modern;
  • Postmodernism.

Unfortunately, in especially standard-type apartments there are not many options for where semicircular arched windows can be installed. Their placement locations were thought out during the design of the structure, and therefore it is only possible to replace the usual square frames with more modern and stylish ones.

Citizens prefer to experiment and install arched windows:

  • To the balcony;
  • To the loggia;
  • For bathrooms;
  • Kind of fake;
  • On the partition between the room and the balcony.

The difference between arched windows and standard ones lies in the way the design is carried out, as well as in the upper contour, which is not flat, but semicircular or oval. The design of the window directly depends on the designer of the model and the consumer. They are made from: wood, plastic.

Thanks to modern technologies, it is possible to produce rounded windows of various radii, which allows you to choose original designs.

Window shapes can be: completely round or in the form of a porthole, in the form of a horseshoe, in the form of a half circle, asymmetrical type, in which there is a different radius of curvature, with a quarter circle. In a rectangular frame, completely different sides can be rounded, for example: side, top, part of the top, bottom. Such arched structures significantly expand the limit of possibilities regarding the design of premises, and thanks to the large assortment, you can make a choice towards the most original products in shape. Using rounded frames, you can create unusual architectural designs.

Which color to choose

First you need to decide on the color scheme of the room:

  1. monochrome;
  2. multi-colored.

In the first option, the choice of colors is very limited, so the curtains should be the same color as the rest of the interior details. If we choose several shades for the kitchen, then we combine them with other objects and surfaces.

The curtain can be combined with:

  • kitchen set;
  • walls;
  • decorative elements.

Curtains should be in harmony with the interior of the kitchen.
Attention! Window textiles should not blend in with the color of the walls. This combination looks very boring.

A universal option for any kitchen is curtains in light shades. They can be plain or with a small pattern. This color scheme is suitable for small spaces with a lack of sunlight.

Light-colored curtains are suitable for a small kitchen.

Dark rooms can be diluted with bright colors. Choose shades of yellow and lime. An ornament in warm colors will also look appropriate.

In discreet interiors, preference should be given to pastel shades without patterns. Natural fabrics will look very appropriate and stylish in this version.

Plain pastel fabrics are suitable for a restrained interior.

Lightweight white arch curtains can be combined with brighter curtains or lambrequins. The main thing is that the tones match other kitchen details.

How to sew a curtain for the kitchen with an arch with your own hands

Ready-made arch curtains are sold in showrooms, but if you wish, you can make them yourself. Creating such a curtain is a rather labor-intensive process, but the result will be a unique product.

First you need to decide on the size of the future curtain, its design and fabric for sewing:

  1. The width of the arch curtain corresponds to the length of the cornice with an extra five centimeters for finishing the edge.
  2. We also add a few centimeters to the desired length for allowances.

To sew an arched curtain, you will need a pattern.
Note! To form folds and pomp, up to 15-20% must be added to the width of the curtain; sometimes it can be two or even three times the length of the curtain rod.

Sewing arch curtains for the kitchen with your own hands requires a pattern. This can be a simple model, when the length and width are marked on the fabric, and the bottom is cut in a semicircle. Or a more complex option:

  1. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise. From the top point in the center we begin to draw a semicircle. Its radius should correspond to one third of the window width.
  2. Cut the resulting semicircle until it becomes a straight line.
  3. We sew a gathering braid onto it.
  4. From the bottom point of the curtain on the side where the arch should be, draw an oblique line to the beginning of the cut out semicircle.
  5. Cut according to the markings.

Sewing an arched curtain takes place in several stages.
You also need to decide on the mounting method:

  • duct tape;
  • rings;
  • hooks

If necessary, attach the fasteners from the wrong side, having first pulled the curtain together.

For a 3x2 window

To sew an arch curtain on a 3x2 meter window, we perform similar steps. The diameter of the semicircle for such parameters will be one meter. We calculate the width of the future curtain based on the expected pomp, size and number of folds (from 3.05 to 9 m).

Useful tips for beginners

If you completely lack cutting and sewing skills, but you really want to transform your kitchen design by making curtains yourself, don’t despair, this is a completely solvable task.

Tips to help make the sewing process easier for beginning needlewomen:

  1. There is no need to immediately take on complex models with a large number of decorative elements. It is better to start with simple classic or modern styles. If you do the work carefully, then even an ordinary curtain will look beautiful.
  2. It wouldn’t hurt to practice on pieces of fabric to ensure the stitching is even, so that you don’t have to rip and redo the finished product later.
  3. It is better to start creating your first “creations” using ready-made patterns and sketches for beginners, following the recommendations step by step. Ideas can be taken from the Internet or magazines; it is recommended to leave independent design until you have acquired at least a little experience.
  4. Be sure to strictly follow all instructions, especially if this is your first experience.
  5. Do not forget about the mandatory combination of curtains and the surrounding interior.
  6. Curtains assembled from scraps are sewn with lining.
  7. The upper part of the curtains is often reinforced (especially for soft tissues).
  8. If you use a fabric with an edge to make a curtain, you will not need additional processing of the sides.
  9. Lambrequin and tiebacks are calculated and cut out separately. For the first decorative element you will need approximately 1.5 m of fabric. It will take about a meter to pick it up.
  10. For decoration you can use: ribbons, straps, fringe, beads, embroidery, applique.

There is no need to worry if something doesn’t turn out the way you wanted at first, a little practice and everything will definitely work out. In any case, every thing made with your own hands is unique and inimitable, and kitchen curtains, sewn yourself, even the simplest ones, will transform the room, bring warmth and comfort to it.

How to hang and tie curtains correctly

Arch curtains can be hung in different ways. The easiest option is to use adhesive tape. To do this, we attach one part to the back side of the canvas, and fasten the other to a flat cornice. This mounting option is very convenient for frequent washing.

You can also use rings. Usually they are equipped with special clothespins, are easily attached to the curtain, and then put on the curtain rod.

A popular option for attaching curtains is with rings.

Another option is ties or loops. They must first be cut out of fabric and sewn to the canvas, then hung on the cornice.

This window textile is designed for a country-style interior; it goes well with wooden cornices, but metal and white plastic are also allowed.

Arch curtains are widely used in country style.

An arched curtain is an excellent solution for a small rustic-style kitchen. It emphasizes the lightness of the design and does not take up much space, freeing up space for the work area.

Such curtains are made from various materials, but it is better to give preference to light fabrics in light colors, primarily natural ones. The shade of the window decor should be combined with other items. This could be wallpaper, furniture or decor.

In addition to ready-made options, you can make an arched curtain yourself. This is more troublesome, but it will turn out to be exclusive and will definitely fit into the interior.

What to do with large windows

If the window is too large in relation to the size of the room, this can also be corrected with the help of curtains, without taking away the light transmission from it. This is very easy to do in two ways - using color and using the cut of the fabric. For example, if the window is disproportionately large and you want to visually lower its top edge, you can use dynamic and active colors. By the way, you can choose curtains by color, guided by the following principles:

  • on the cardinal side - red shades are suitable for the south side of the house, blue for the north;
  • according to the season - for autumn, white and shades of gray look good, for winter, bluish shades look great, for summer - curtains in red tones, and for spring - green, although you can, on the contrary, play on contrasts.

For example, if you place a bright accent or pattern at the viewer's level, no one will look at the height of the window. Another option for decorating a large window is to make curtains exactly the size of the opening and turn them into stained glass, or rather, choose a pattern and color so that the fabric works like stained glass. You can visually reduce the height with a combined cut.
