In advertisements and advertisements you can often find a phrase like “Installation of plastic windows according to GOST.” Theoretically, such installation is a guarantee of quality, reliability and durability of installation work, but.

What is “installation of a plastic window according to GOST”?

Manufacturer - today almost all profile systems, with the exception of a few brands, are produced in Russia.

The BRuGMANN company, founded in 1848, is one of the oldest developers and manufacturers of PVC profile systems. The production of PVC profiles for window and door structures has been carried out since 1958 and is located in the north-west of Germany, in Papenburg. Since 2002, the group has united under its leadership two manufacturers of high-quality exclusively German PVC profiles, producing their products under the trademarks “SALAMANDER” and “BRuGMANN”.

The struggle “who is cheaper” continues in the window market, and it seems that customers are not interested in anything else. However, a private buyer by default wants to get warmth, silence, convenience and the absence of problems for many winters for his hard-earned money. Many people also need additional protection of slopes and healthy air. It’s just that customers don’t realize all their needs without the help of a salesperson.

Hidden needs can be turned into real demand, and then the ability to satisfy it turns into a long-term competitive advantage for a window company. EXPROF window systems are a powerful source of such benefits for any SPC manufacturer. Why EXPROF?

Which plastic window profile is better to choose? Selection tips and manufacturer ratings

The profile is the main element of any window; the durability and reliability of the entire structure depends on it. At first glance, the profile for PVC windows from different manufacturers looks almost the same. The difference in quality becomes obvious after a few months (or even years!) of use, when cheap windows begin to warp and cracks form in them. How to choose a good plastic profile for windows? How are the products of different brands different from each other? And does it make sense to save on glazing by choosing an economy class profile?

Profile for PVC windows: characteristics and types

The profile is the basis of the entire structure from which window sashes and frames are made. They determine not only the appearance of the window, but also its strength. Common materials for window profiles are wood (cedar and larch) and aluminum. But most often the profile for windows is made of PVC, or polyvinyl chloride. This profile is reinforced with metal inserts and has air cavities inside that increase the thermal insulation of the structure.

According to the European standard EN 12608 SR “Unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U) for the manufacture of windows and doors” and the similar Russian GOST 30673-99 “Polyvinyl chloride profiles for window and door units. Technical specifications" profiles are classified according to a number of characteristics. In particular, according to the thickness of the external and internal walls, the following are distinguished:

  • class A profiles - have outer walls with a thickness of 2.8 mm and inner walls with a thickness of 2.5 mm; they provide the best thermal insulation and are considered the optimal choice;
  • class B profiles - have outer walls with a thickness of 2.5 mm, internal walls - from 2.0 mm; such windows are not only “cooler”, but also 15% less resistant to deformation;
  • class C profiles - all others that do not meet standards A and B; no strict requirements are imposed on them.

It is important!

There is a so-called “object” profile, which is intended for installation in non-residential industrial premises. It cannot be used in houses and apartments: due to its thin walls, it does not retain heat and is not resistant to deformation. At first glance, such a profile is no different from a regular one - except that you can see the object marking on the protective film. Often, unscrupulous companies offering very low prices for their products sell windows made from exactly this profile.

Choosing the best profile for plastic windows

It is not easy to determine by eye which profile of plastic windows is better, but there are some features that can say a lot about its quality.

Profile uniformity

The plastic must be uniform and absolutely smooth. The grainy surface indicates that the windows were most likely made at home and are fake. The coating should also be uniform, without streaks or gradients.

By the way

To avoid buying a fake at the price of branded windows, pay attention to the factory markings on the inside of the window frame. It should have a stamp with the name of the manufacturer and a series of numbers: shift number, device for producing PVC profiles and date of manufacture.

Profile width

Most often, companies offer a plastic profile for windows with a width of 58 mm - this is a classic option, preferable for residential premises. There is also a profile with a width of 70 mm; this is often installed in high-rise buildings or where the climate is particularly harsh. The 90 mm wide profile is a premium offering and features excellent heat and sound insulation properties. However, not all companies work with such products.

Profile thickness

The profile thickness should be the same, from 2.5 mm to 3 mm. However, thin walls are not suitable for heavy window blocks: in this case, the welding seam is less strong, which means the reliability of the entire structure suffers.

Number of air chambers

The number of cameras also depends on the width of the profile. A 58 mm profile can have a maximum of three chambers, which, however, is quite enough for the windows to retain heat. 70mm - with three, four and even five cameras. The last of those mentioned (70 mm) are most in demand for glazing apartments and houses. The norm for a 90mm profile is six cameras. The more cameras, the warmer and quieter the house will be. However, in fairness it should be said that the difference between, for example, a three- and four-chamber package is not so significant.

Number of double glazed windows

The number of air chambers in a PVC profile should not be confused with the number of double-glazed windows. A double-glazed window is several sheets of glass connected to each other along the contour using a special frame and sealants. Sealed chambers with air or other gas inside are formed between the glasses. A single-chamber double-glazed window is the lightest; it consists of two glasses and one air chamber between them. Such double-glazed windows are very light, suitable for glazing large openings, so they are often installed on balconies, loggias and terraces. However, they are not suitable for windows due to insufficient thermal insulation. For a home, cottage, office or apartment, it is better to choose a double-glazed window consisting of three sheets of glass and two air chambers. Three-chamber double-glazed windows made of four sheets of glass are rare, they are heavy and transmit less light than other types of double-glazed windows. Such windows are in demand only in the North, where temperatures in winter can drop to -40°C and below. At higher temperatures there is almost no difference between two- and three-chamber double-glazed windows.

It is important!

When choosing a plastic profile for windows, pay attention to the frame seals. There must be two of them, otherwise condensation will settle under the frame, and this spoils the insulation and creates a favorable environment for bacteria and mold.

Rating of window profiles: comparison of products from key manufacturers

Rehau

One of the most famous companies, which has been producing reliable windows for more than half a century and is considered the main innovator in this field: Rehau engineers are constantly improving the design and profile configuration. Thus, the company pays great attention to environmental friendliness and energy-saving technologies. The company produces profiles with a width of 60–70 mm. Rehau products belong to the middle class.

Another German “giant” whose products are valued all over the world. VEKA produce white and colored profiles that do not fade or turn yellow when exposed to direct sunlight. The seal is made of natural rubber, which does not freeze even when exposed to very low temperatures - a valuable quality for the Russian climate. The line includes models with widths from 58 to 90 mm. In terms of price, VEKA windows are comparable to Rehau.

Trocal

This is a company with a long history, one of the pioneers in the production of plastic windows. The first model was released in 1954. For decorative finishing, the company offers a wide range of options: from lamination to acrylic coating. The profile is manufactured using environmentally friendly Greenline technology and provides impeccable thermal insulation. Profile width - 70 mm.

Salamander

This German company is not as famous as KBE or VEKA, but Salamander products are in no way inferior to them in quality. The profile is produced exclusively in Germany, which means that when purchasing such windows, you can count on truly European quality at a European price. The company produces bags with widths from 60 to 76 mm.

Comparison of PVC profiles

The metal-plastic profile significantly affects the cost of the window. At first glance, the profiles of different companies are the same, but this is not so. Now window manufacturers in Stavropol offer profiles from WDS, Rehau, KTM, Open Teck, Brokelman, Veka and many others. Which metal-plastic profile to choose? Which PVC profile is better? Is plastic toxic? In this article we will answer these and other questions and help you choose the best option for glazing your home.

What is PVC?

Profiles for plastic windows are produced using PVC extruders. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) was obtained by the French scientist Rainier in 1835 and is rightfully considered one of the oldest artificial materials. The first window profiles were produced in Germany back in 1954. Based on its chemical composition, PVC is classified as a thermoplastic. Ethylene (43%) reacts chemically with chlorine (57%) to form dichloroethane, then vinyl chloride, which is converted by polymerization into polyvinyl chloride. PVC is a flame-retardant material, resistant to atmospheric influences, has low thermal conductivity and cost. Titanium oxide is used as pigments to give the profile a white color, and iron oxide is used for brown. Also, to improve the physical and chemical properties of plastic, plasticizers are used, which increase the elasticity of the material when exposed to low temperatures.

Is plastic toxic?

To ensure that windows do not change their color and serve properly for many years, thermal stabilizers are added to the plastic composition. Until 2001, PVC contained lead. Everyone knows that lead is a heavy metal and its fumes can be harmful to health. But lead in production was not used in its pure form, but in a compound. For example, lead compounds are included in crystal. But no one considers crystal to be a deadly material, and products made from it have been used in everyday life for many years. By 2015, it is planned to stop using lead in industry. Please note that after the adoption of the settlement agreement in the production of plastic, instead of lead compounds, calcium and zinc began to be used as a heat stabilizer. All declared profiles are certified and have sanitary and hygienic conclusions that confirm the safety of plastic windows.

Today there are more than 10 manufacturers of PVC profiles on the window market. How do profiles for metal-plastic windows differ from each other? Let's compare the profiles of famous brands: WDS, REhau, KTM, Veka, Brokelman, KBE, Open Teck.

Profile thickness

The main characteristic of a profile is its width (installation depth). Today, profiles with a width of 58-60 mm and 70 mm are actively used on the market. A profile with a width of 70 mm has higher heat-saving and sound-insulating characteristics. You need to choose the profile width based on the intended installation location (a window in an apartment, a window in a house, a balcony or loggia, a door to a store) and the climatic zones of Ukraine.

Number of cameras

The number of cameras is an equally important characteristic of the profile. Chambers are air-filled voids between partitions. Their number depends on the width of the profile and affects the thermal insulation. The more cameras, the “warmer” the profile. The 60 mm thick profile has three or four chambers. The first is designed to drain condensate. In the second, a reinforcing profile is placed in production; in the third, parts of the fittings are fixed. The 70 mm thick profile has four or five chambers. Note that increasing the number of cameras without changing the thickness of the profile does not significantly affect the characteristics of the window.

Thickness of the outer walls of the profile

According to DSTU B V.2.6-15-99 C.14 and the European standard RAL GZ 716/1 (part 1, 7), the thickness of the profile walls must be at least 3 mm. A number of manufacturers save on profile production and supply the Ukrainian market with a profile with a wall thickness of about 2.6 mm. When welding profiles, their large deformation is observed, the quality of the welds deteriorates, the strength of the corner connectors is weakened, and the time for safe operation of the window is significantly reduced.

Profile class

Metal-plastic profiles are divided into 2 classes: A and B. Class A has a thickened outer wall (more than 3 mm ± 0.2 mm) and is considered the optimal profile for apartment windows, child care facilities, entrance and interior doors. Class B - a profile where the wall thickness is less than 3 mm, used for glazing commercial buildings. The advantages of this profile are lower cost compared to class A profile.

Profile reinforcement

To give the structure strength, a metal profile made of galvanized steel, 1-2 mm thick, is installed in the inner chamber of the frame, sash and impost. The metal profile compensates for possible deformation of the structure, since plastic and steel react differently to temperature changes. Reinforcement can be C-shaped, U-shaped or closed. The installed metal is not visible to the end user, as it is located inside the window or door. You should be wary if they offer very low prices for windows. It is likely that there is thinner metal inside the structure.

BEWARE OF ECONOMY SYSTEMS

BEWARE OF ECONOMY SYSTEMS

When purchasing new windows, most of us first think about their price. Without understanding their specifics, the consumer bets on what he really understands - on price. Meanwhile, choosing PVC structures can be compared to choosing a car. Like cars, they differ in class, equipment and place of production. In this article we will tell you how to choose a window of a suitable class and configuration, as well as the dangers of “economy systems”.

PROFILE UNDER RAL CONTROL

Some manufacturers of profile systems, for example VEKA, have deliberately placed themselves under the control of RAL specialists - the most stringent industrial standard in Europe. And they did this to confirm their high quality with recognition from an independent organization. But in Russia, so-called “object systems” are increasingly being offered. They can be called differently (lightweight, tender...), but their essence remains unchanged: we are talking about profile articles with a reduced thickness of the outer walls. Their appearance is understandable. Each manufacturer strives to produce the maximum amount of products at minimum costs, that is, from a minimum amount of raw materials. The difference in reducing the wall thickness is “only” a few tenths of a millimeter.

And yet this difference exists. It is real and tangible. It can have very real consequences both for manufacturers of window units and for end consumers. When we talk about this, we do not mean an abstract “deterioration in quality,” but a very specific increase in consumer risks. Which ones?

— The need to change the welding mode

Profiles with a reduced thickness of the outer walls exhibit more pronounced deformation during the welding process. To weld such profiles, it is necessary to change the welding operating mode, loosening the clamp.

When welding profiles with normal outer walls (3 mm), the cross-sectional width of the welded surfaces due to the natural shrinkage of PVC and subsequent stripping is 2.4 mm. When welding “economy systems” this figure is 1.9 mm. The consequence of these changes is a deterioration in the quality of welds. They become more fragile.

— Weakening the strength of corner joints

Even in the case of 100% correct welding of “economy systems”, the strength of corner joints applicable to them when tested for mechanical load is only from 61% to 81% in comparison with RAL profiles. The average value is 73%. Thus, the strength of fillet welded joints of RAL profiles is more than 25% higher than that of profiles belonging to the “economy series”.

— Reducing the time of safe window operation

In order to comply with the calculated periods of safe operation of the window in accordance with the requirements, the value of the permanent mechanical load of thin-walled profiles must also be reduced by 25%. That is, if the load on the corner connection of a profile corresponding to RAL is within the average standard value, then the ultimate strength of such a connection occurs after 50 years. If a window made of a thin-walled profile is subjected to the same load, the service life of its corner connections will be only 5000 hours, that is, 208 days.

- Poor weather resistance

Thin-walled profiles have a shorter safe service life. Thus, measurements taken on profile samples after 40 years of their use in the finished product showed that the thickness of the outer wall during this time decreases by an average of 0.7 mm. Thus, after 40 years of operation, the economy series profiles will have a wall thickness of only 1.8 mm, which means the window will turn into a “house of cards.”

"Economy systems" - the collapse of the window business

There was already such a page in the history of the window business when the passion for dumping led in Italy to a catastrophic decline in the image of plastic windows, which turned from a high-quality product into a kind of “tender ersatz”. The desire to make money by constantly reducing prices and increasing turnover led to the fact that turnover began to decrease over time, and along with them, earnings. In order to adjust the profitability of the business at least a little, all market players had to conduct expensive campaigns that pursued only one goal: returning the plastic window to its good name.

In the conditions of Russian construction, which does not already have a special technological culture, the widespread use of “lightweight profiles” will inevitably lead to a decrease in the quality of construction and an increase in claims.
