At one time, fine binding was the only possible glazing option. In those days, they did not have the technology for manufacturing large-format sheet glass, and small plates were obtained by rolling out the molten mass, which, after cooling, was cut to a rectangle or square.
At the same time, stained glass windows appeared, which differed from windows with colored glass of various sizes inserted into a patterned lead frame. Nowadays there is no need for binding with medium bars; this format in most cases is decorative in nature, and is provided by spros (in Russian terminology - gorbylk).

Kinds
In the retail chain today you can find enough offers for window frames.
They
are grouped by functionality :
- constructive;
- decorative;
- at the installation location on the outside of the double-glazed window or from the inside;
- invoices;
- Viennese and Venetian.
They all differ in their characteristics and installation method.
Interglazed
These are layouts made of aluminum/synthetic material, which are placed inside the glass unit in a strict rectangular shape or with a certain pattern: star, sun and others. They may be double tinted and look different on the inside and outside of the window.
Thin 8 mm metal plates are bent according to the author’s plans, giving them a variety of shapes. At the factory, they are painted in bulk, can be varnished, covered with film or have decorative overlays.
Interglazed spacers are installed inside the glass unit at the factory; for this purpose, there is a specialized hole in the spacer frame of 12-16 mm. After which the sprocket plates are fastened with a special cross-shaped connector.
Advantages:
- high factory quality of production and installation;
- thoughtful dimensions to create a unique design look for the window;
- does not violate the characteristics of the window unit;
- is not a source of window contamination and does not create problems during routine maintenance of the structure from dust and dirt.
Flaws:
- may affect the increased cost of the window unit;
- impossible to install and replace yourself;
- If the internal spacer shock absorbers fail, a rattling effect may occur when the sash operates and there is a loud sound.
Constructive
Structural layouts are part of the frame. They are integrated into the window system to divide the window surface into several zones. Each such part is equipped with its own double-glazed window and impost profile, similar to the frame material: aluminum, wood and PVC.
This option is preferable for large windows located in areas with high wind potential. In order to install such a layout on a window, you will need to perform complex calculations so as not to overload the window structure.
These modifications of sprocket bars have recently been rarely used, since despite their small advantages they have quite a lot of disadvantages. And besides, today the industry has launched the production of more effective models of decorative window layouts, which are in great demand.
Advantages:
- high strength;
- no additional maintenance or cleaning required;
- factory installation quality.
Flaws:
- high weight;
- high cost of production and installation;
- impossibility of self-assembly;
- impossibility of use for balconies due to significant weight;
- high risk of depressurization of the structure due to the large number of connections.
Invoices
Overlay modifications refer to false frames and can be made from 18 to 45 mm wide from different materials for different types of window systems.
In practice, this type of window frames can be installed on wooden frames; in this case, they are made with a separate patterned design that imitates separate panes.
The wooden layout can be secured to the window frame with strong hinges, allowing it to be removed for maintenance and cleaning of the window. In addition, the slats are not located close to the glass, which does not interfere with the free flow of atmospheric water.
Advantages:
- easy installation and dismantling, which you can do yourself;
- simple maintenance;
- does not affect the energy efficiency characteristics of the window;
- low price;
- possibility of antiseptic surface treatment.
Flaws:
- cannot be used for swing-and-hinged sashes;
- short service life;
- does not affect the strengthening of the window.
Venetian
This is another modification of false bindings , but more modern than wooden ones.
They are factory-made, so they have sophisticated, modern shapes made of plastic or aluminum. They can be removable with double-sided tape or installed “forever” by gluing with sealant.
This type of binding can be easily modified over time, which is preferable for many window owners.
Venetian decorative shutters are installed on the outer surface of the window . If an additional parallel layout is made inside, the imitation of the window frame will be of the highest quality. The owner can realize any of his creative plans using the Venetian layout, since the retail chain today sells both individual planks and ready-made grilles of different shapes and designs in large quantities.
When choosing means for fixing Venetian layouts, you should not use liquid glue so that it does not flow down the window, forming streaks on it. Also, you should not overload window openings, especially small ones, with decorative elements, as this will reduce the light flux into the room and affect the thermal air balance in the room.
Advantages:
- simple installation and dismantling;
- high popularity among decorative models;
- wide choice of shapes and materials;
- original design;
- possibility of self-installation;
- low cost of material and installation work;
- versatility, suitable for any window systems.
The main disadvantage of such false bindings is their low service life. In addition, such linings become clogged with dust, making them more difficult to maintain.
Viennese
This hybrid type of window layout is based on the Venetian and structural models . The first part is mounted with sealing gaskets on the outer glass, and inside the double-glazed window, similar to the original installation, a spacer frame is installed parallel to it, which imitates the division of glass.
This technique allows you to achieve the greatest resemblance to real sprockets. The width of Viennese models is 20-70 mm, and the height above the glass surface ranges from 8 to 12 mm.
Viennese frames and patterns are made from lightweight, non-corrosive metals and plastic. For wooden windows, they can be made from thin wood veneer. The choice of finish should match the type of covering of the main window profile of the window, or at least match it in color.
When laying out metal, the energy efficiency of the window will become lower.
Advantages:
- elegant and fashionable look of the window, you can choose a pattern that will best match the design of the facade;
- increasing the resistance of the glass unit from distortion during sudden temperature changes;
- partial load transfer from the glass unit to the frames;
- high decorative level.
Flaws:
- the inability to install Viennese sprasses yourself;
- the spacer frame becomes a cold bridge, which reduces the energy efficiency of the window;
- high installation cost;
- the weight of the window structure increases;
- difficulty of maintenance due to the deposition of sediment and dust on the Viennese patterns due to the fact that they protrude above the glass from the outside.
Installation of decorative layouts
The internal layout is fixed to the spacer frame of the glass unit during its manufacture. With the help of connecting elements, decorative strips are connected at angles of 90°, 135° and 180°, forming various geometric shapes. The tightness of the inter-glass space ensures the safety and cleanliness of the decorative binding.
In a static state of the structure, the sprockets do not touch the glass. When closing the doors, due to inertia, the layout may touch the glass. Contact between glass and layout can be observed in large glass units under conditions of low ambient temperature.
In what cases are interrogations appropriate?
A modern window with shutters can be safely attributed to the “retro” style, and when choosing this format, you need to remember that it corresponds to the architectural appearance of the house. Naturally, developers will not install windows with shutters in a new apartment building - they are more expensive than standard models. But for a private or country house, such window decor is not uncommon, but it does not suit all styles.
If we talk about the already established “designer” stereotype, sprocket bars will be in place when the house is built in one of these styles:
- Mediterranean;
- Provence;
- country;
- English;
- American;
- Tuscan;
- Monterey (a mixture of French and Spanish style);
- Gothic and neo-Gothic.
As can be seen from the list, all of the listed architectural styles are historical, but they are still relevant today. And in those countries where English (American) and arched windows are common, sprocket bars are necessary both as a decorative element and as a way to improve the rigidity of the frame.

Features and installation rules
Structural and interglazing frames are installed by specialists at the factory or at the installation site of the double-glazed window; other types of false frames can be installed on your own.
Algorithm for installing overhead false layouts on windows:
- Measure the window opening.
- Make a sketch of the overlay for the planned decor.
- Calculate the required profile footage.
- Mark the location of the decor on the glass surface.
- Using a thin knife, cut the pieces to the required length.
- The surfaces are treated so that they are free of burrs and roughness; this will help create thin seams.
- Apply it to the glass and check that the dimensions of the workpieces are correct.
- Treat the glass surface with acetone.
- Remove the protective film from the back of the decor.
- Glue the element very carefully, using light pressure.
- The joints are sealed with silicone sealant.
Arrangement of frames with layout
Ready-made windows come with structural, interglazed and Viennese layouts. There are two installation methods for them:
- installation of a solid window;
- with disassembly.
The first option can be used when installing standard window sizes and at a height no higher than 9th. The second option is required for window sizes over 3 m in width, over 2 m in height and for construction and installation work at a height above the 9th floor.
Interglazed and Viennese joints are installed in the glass block, so they are mounted together with it using standard technology with sealing of seams and installation of fittings. The structural frames are integral with the frame; each individual section is equipped with its own double-glazed window, followed by sealing the seams and installing fittings on the assembled window.
