Platbands for windows in a wooden house - from simple beautiful to complex carved ones

Why are they needed and what are they?

Platbands are strips of a certain width required to close the technological gap formed during the installation of windows. Thermal insulation material is laid under them to prevent the formation of cold bridges. The cash on the windows must be the same color as on the entire window. Window framing can be external or internal.

External trims are mounted without ebb under the window. It is absolutely necessary to close the foam and remove sediment.

External strips protect frames from climatic influences: blowing, precipitation. They also perform a decorative function to give them an aesthetic and complete look. Internal cashers are only decorative elements. They do not perform a protective function.

Pros and cons of use

Framing window sides for wooden houses is used in the construction of each property. Consumers note many undeniable advantages of this solution :

  1. Attractive appearance, the ability to give the facade architectural expressiveness.

  2. Increasing the thermal properties and heat transfer resistance of the enclosing structure, which helps retain heat in the room and reduce heating costs.
  3. Improving sound insulation due to the installation of additional materials with a high porosity coefficient.
  4. Mechanical protection of foam placed in the installation gap when installing windows, eliminating the risk of penetration of ultraviolet rays.
  5. Strict compliance with the requirements of the detailed design, parts and assemblies provided by the architect.

Some owners of wooden houses also note a number of disadvantages of these decorative elements :

  1. Increased cost of the structure due to the cost of the material.
  2. The complexity of installation, assembly, the presence of additional work on the manufacture of finishing elements that are intended solely for decorative purposes.
  3. Additional labor costs during assembly.
  4. The need for periodic maintenance of the finishing element.
  5. The need to replace elements after the service life of the window unit due to aggressive environmental influences.

Note. Despite the presence of subjective shortcomings, the framing of window openings with platbands is laid down by each developer of the building project, and the rate of sales of materials for their manufacture is growing every year.

Materials from which window casings are made

Cashing on windows is done in different styles. The design of the framing strips depends on the material of the house, its cladding and the wishes of the owner. If the house is brick, then the cash can be plastic or metal. For wooden houses, it is better to take wooden planks. Let's look at the advantages and disadvantages of each of these materials.

Wood

  • environmentally friendly material;
  • wooden planks can be of various configurations with carved patterns. Openwork drawings will give the building a special charm and uniqueness, making it stand out among wooden houses with its intricacy of shapes and the quality of the craftsman’s work.
  • wood is easy to process. Simple strips are cut on a milling machine. To create carved compositions, you will need carpenter skills;
  • Platbands are attached without difficulty. For installation, you can use nails, glue for external and internal work;
  • affordable price. Ordinary planks without carved frills are cheap, especially if they are made of soft conifers: spruce, pine, cedar. This material can last a long time because the resin released by the wood protects it from natural influences;
  • need for frequent updates. The wood must be covered with protective layers of varnish, oil, and impregnations, which should be renewed once every 2-3 years;
  • the high price of some types of wood: oak, walnut, alder. This is due to the strength and durability of the material.

MDF

MDF is made from sawdust by pressing. For better bonding, natural resins are used.

MDF is used only for cashing from the inside, as they cannot withstand changes in temperature and moisture.

  • inexpensive. The low cost attracts the attention of many homeowners;
  • easy care. Simply wipe with a damp cloth. Heavy stains can be cleaned with non-abrasive detergents;
  • Some types, due to the different sizes of the additional boards, can be inserted into any opening.

Unstable, afraid of temperature changes. Therefore they are used indoors only.

Plastic

  • wear-resistant. During their manufacturing process, polymers are added to the material, which prevent the harmful effects of external factors. Dyes in plastic do not change color and do not fade in the sun;
  • plastic is easy to saw and cut;
  • ease of installation is due to the presence of a tongue-and-groove locking connection in many products;
  • easy care consists of wiping them with a damp cloth to remove dirt and dust;
  • acceptable cost. The price of plastic material is low, which increases their popularity for window framing.

Metal

Metal trims are used in houses where slopes need to be installed. They are their continuation.

  • metal cashing is made of galvanized steel. The material is durable and will last a long time. The top of the metal is coated with polymers that protect against rust;
  • wear resistance;
  • easy installation. Screwed on with self-tapping screws with heads to match the windows.

Advantages of plastic door frames

Depending on the material, door trims come in several types: wooden, metal, ceramic, stone, plastic, chipboard or MDF.

Wood is a relatively durable, environmentally friendly, but not a budget option. MDF and chipboard have a lower cost, but are not suitable for rooms with high humidity (kitchen, bathroom, loggia). Metal ones can be installed not only on the outside of the front door, but also to decorate interior doors in loft or hi-tech styles. Doorways are trimmed with ceramics or stone where the walls are made of tiles (for example, in the bathroom or outside the front door of the house). The plastic platband also compares favorably:

  • easy to install - attached to liquid nails or special nails without heads;
  • easy to care for (can be washed using ordinary household chemicals).

The corners of the box can be designed in different ways. The profile is trimmed either by 450 or by 900 (and then the vertical profile frames the opening to the very top). Whatever option you choose, you need to very accurately calculate the dimensions and make precise cuts without chipping. With PVC trim it is easy to make a beautiful 450 angle - using a connector that will hide the joint.

Such profiles are suitable for any interior doors, including bathrooms and loggias.

Arrangement of platbands in a wooden house

Installation of platbands on windows in a wooden house is ensured using a single tenon. The frame has 4 components. The top and bottom strips, called the trim, are connected by two side strips. They are attached end to end. Each strip must be installed separately. If you plan to install a window sill, then the bottom trim is not needed. First, install the window sill, then the side strips.

The installation ends with the arrangement of the upper trim. When installing platbands, you should pay attention to the fact that they overlap the frame by 0.5-1 cm. In order for the sashes to open wide, the platbands should be located at a distance of 1-2 cm from the hinges.

Types of wooden platbands

Only from wood can you make platbands of any shape and size with your own hands. From other materials they are ordered, having previously made measurements.

Platbands are:

  • simple purchased ones;
  • homemade;
  • carved.

On the Internet you can find a lot of examples of carved cash stencils for windows

Simple from moldings

If a wooden house is furnished in a minimalist style, then ordinary planks are best suited. They are smooth. Some have a chamfer, others are available without it. Sometimes only the edges or the entire surface are rounded. Planks are also available with curved edges. They are joined at an angle of 45 and 90 degrees. If the slats are cut at an angle of 45 degrees, then the frame looks neat and beautiful.

Right angle platbands give the window a more expressive look. The length of one plank is 2 m. To frame the frame, you need to cut the strips from the molding according to the measurements.

Homemade platbands

Homemade casings differ from molded building materials in that the planks are also made independently from edged and unedged boards. They are also processed with their own hands. If the board is unedged, then remove the bark from the wood and sand its surface, removing flaws. You can limit yourself to only removing its top layer in order to emphasize the naturalness and beauty of the tree.

You can also make brushed burnt window trims yourself

If the board is edged, then it is first sanded using coarse sandpaper 40-60, then fine sandpaper 80-100 until the surface becomes even and smooth.

Carved platbands

Carved cash panels look impressive, emphasizing the individuality of a wooden house, turning it into a mansion with openwork patterns.

Such cash cards come in slotted and overhead types. The slotted ones are distinguished by an openwork pattern cut out using a jigsaw. The drawing is printed, transferred to plywood and made into a stencil. Then it is placed on the board, outlined and cut through. The cut out pattern is polished. Slotted cashers look impressive, striking with the whimsicality of the patterns and the skill of the carpenter.

Watch the video to see how you can make different platbands with your own hands.

Invoices are done differently. They make a sketch. Prepare the elements that make up the pattern. Each part is cut out separately. These can be geometric shapes, curls, flowers, leaves. They are then placed on a wooden plank and secured. The pattern turns out voluminous. Planks and details can be painted in different colors, which will emphasize their convex shapes.

How and why to attach platbands in a wooden house

Frames in a wooden structure are inserted into the casing. Wooden cashers are also fixed to the pigtail at a distance of 10-15 cm from it. The following are used as fasteners:

  • finishing nails. They have almost no hats. They are galvanized or painted in different colors. They can be matched to the tone of the trim and frame;
  • dowels. These are wooden cylinders of small diameter. The dowel is lubricated with glue, inserted into the casing to the full depth of the hole, and then into the hole in the strip. In this case, the hole in the bar is not through. The fastening is strong and invisible, although more complex in execution.

How to attach platbands to a log wall

It is easier to attach cash to the timber because it is even and smooth. The log wall is voluminous and fixing the platbands is not easy.

There are 2 ways to attach them:

  • along the perimeter of the window along the casing, logs are cut off at a distance of 35 cm. Platbands are attached to the leveled wall;
  • The bars are fixed to the casing, which allows you to move the casings outside the wall. Technological gaps are sealed with polyurethane foam. As soon as it polymerizes, the excess is cut off and covered with silicone sealant on top. Putty is applied. The cracks can be caulked and then filled with putty.

How to prevent moisture from seeping under the trim

To prevent water from flowing over the top bar, several methods are used:

  • install the visor. It can be wooden or metal;
  • an inclined strip is mounted at the bottom of the frame.

Platbands with wooden canopy

The platband in a wooden house with a wooden canopy is called Finnish. Such canopies are installed in many houses in Finland.

A canopy is installed on top of the top trim at the same angle as the roof. The visor is supported by small consoles attached to the side bars. To make the canopy more stable, a cut is made in the log and its edge is hidden in it. Seal the gap. Silicone sealant is used for sealing. But such cash cards are ordinary, not carved.

With metal visor

The metal visor is part of the low tide. It is made in the form of the letter Z. A cut is made in the wall. The edge of the visor is inserted into it. Only the cut was much smaller than that of a wooden canopy, because the thickness of the sheet iron is small.

Installing the bottom trim at an angle

The lower trim is installed at the same angle as the roof. Triangles are screwed to the frame, which will support the plank in an inclined position. The water will not touch the wall, flowing to the ground.

Types of cash deposits

The market offers a wide range of platbands for wooden houses. Below is a detailed classification of decorative elements of the category under consideration, which depends on the material, design and other criteria.

According to the material of manufacture

Depending on the materials used, the designs of platbands for framing window openings on the front side are divided into categories.

Indoor and outdoor

Depending on the architectural or design project, platbands can be installed in the following areas of the window opening :

  1. On the front side of the building - they are installed in almost every residential building, giving the facade a finished look.
  2. From the interior side - as a rule, they are used to mask the gaps between the finishing elements of the slopes and the main plane of the inner edge of the wall.
  3. At both sides.

Advantages:

  • cashing from the interior helps close the joints between mutually perpendicular finishing elements;
  • increases the energy efficiency of the space being used.

Flaws:

  • increased material consumption;
  • high level of labor costs;
  • cost of window opening finishing elements.

By design

Depending on the type of design and decorative surface treatment, platbands for windows in wooden structures are divided into the following categories.

Advantages:

  • manufactured in a factory;
  • high quality processing of each product.

Flaws:

  • the difficulty of creating an exclusive design;
  • high cost when placing an individual order.

Stamped

Referring to metal or plastic products, patterns are formed on the surface of the platbands using a factory matrix.

Advantages:

  • possibility of ordering a large batch with an identical surface shape;
  • wide range of different finishing options.

Flaws:

  • metal products are subject to deformation;
  • low level of maintainability.

carved

The most complex type of cashing, wooden, plastic or polyurethane products are subject to multi-stage processing, as a result of which an exclusive pattern is created on their surface.

Advantages:

  • individual design;
  • the ability to place an order according to the customer’s wishes;
  • full compliance with design solutions.

Flaws:

  • high retail cost;
  • difficulty of replacement in case of accidental breakdown.

Important. For modern wooden buildings built in the spirit of minimalism, in country style, or using Scandinavian architecture techniques, the use of smooth cladding is recommended. In the case where the building was built in the classical Russian style, the installation of carved elements is allowed.
