How to make carved frames for windows in a wooden house

Selecting the material

We talked in detail about what platbands are made of in our article “Features of decorative finishing of windows in wooden houses.”
Types of wood

Let us remind you here that when making cash, you must be able to find a balance between the technological qualities of wood and its climate resistance.

In general, the following rules should be followed:

  • for volumetric carving, use soft wood species (linden, cherry, alder);
  • For the manufacture of frames, use strong and stable types of wood (larch, oak, ash, pine).

Let us separately emphasize another advantage of the slotted technology - ordinary plywood can be used to make such decor. Surprisingly, this material, after impregnation with water-polymer compounds, becomes as strong as oak, while remaining the most convenient for cutting out patterns.

Moreover, three-dimensional compositions can be made from plywood by gluing several layers into one overlay block.

The only disadvantage of such glued compositions is that to cut out large patterns you need a stationary machine that allows the installation of a round-shaped jigsaw. It is almost impossible to go through all the curves of the design without errors and serifs, using only classic flat files on such a thin material.

Double-glazed window installation

The glass unit is inserted into the window opening after the adjustment plates are secured. It should not be pressed too hard against the window posts, as the frame may become distorted due to weather conditions, and the glass may simply burst. The absence of a gap between the counter and the glass unit is a reason to contact the manufacturer of the glass unit, who must eliminate this design defect.

The glass unit is installed level, its fixation is carried out with dowels that have special spikes, which are inserted into the grooves of the frame by tapping on the beads. When the tenon reaches the groove, a click will be heard, indicating that the dowel is firmly fixed.

How to frame a window with wooden frames?

In a wooden house, it is better to install double-glazed windows and wooden slopes, and the same facing strips for them. The excess gap between the wall and the frame is reduced with the help of an additional strip. It is attached with screws or nails close to the logs. If there is no excess gap, these strips are not needed.

Fastening is carried out with self-tapping screws or finishing nails with a high head (the second option provides a neat appearance).

You can get original platbands if you use threads. Finishing with patterns will give the house uniqueness. Even at the stage of manufacturing these elements, the lumber is given a shaped surface, the edge is decorated with scallops (teeth) along the long side.

All types of wooden window trims have 4 subtypes in external design:

  • flat;
  • smooth;
  • curly;
  • rounded.

The material for production is solid wood or laminated veneer lumber. The term “solid wood” means that a joint technology was used, rather than a single piece of wood. Otherwise, the workpiece will become deformed over time.

The more valuable the type of wood, the higher the price of a window element. The most expensive ones are made from cedar, oak, and merbau. Traditional breeds popular in mass production and custom production:

  • oak;
  • pine;
  • larch.

Pine planks have a warm golden color and natural amber veining. Oak trims have a reddish tint, the beauty of which is emphasized by varnish.

The surface of wooden elements is processed after installation to hide fasteners (nail heads, self-tapping screws). Here are the possible options:

  • varnish coating (it’s better to take ship’s varnish);
  • painting in any color with wood paint.

Due to the fact that pine is a soft wood, the blanks are impregnated with special chemical compounds before installation. After such treatment, the wood does not allow air to pass through, does not expand, does not bend - it retains its integrity and correct geometry throughout its entire service life.

Varieties

Window openings are decorated using different types of platbands.

They are divided into:

  • Invoices. This type is used most often. It is placed on top of the frame. After its installation, the penetration of dust, moisture and sun rays into the cracks is eliminated.
  • Telescopic. Installation of such platbands is carried out in the space between the wall of the house and the window frame. The design is characterized by the absence of fasteners. There is no need for it, since the material is precisely fixed in its position. The advantage is the protection of window frames from deformation. However, during installation it is necessary to remove the frame, and this is fraught with difficulties in a wooden house.
  • Special. Included in the glass unit.

Basic Rules. What not to do

Below is a list of rules that will help you avoid the most common problems.

It is recommended to use a board 3-4 cm thick as the starting material. Do not immediately grab onto complex patterns

First, it is better to practice on ordinary round parts that are easy to make with a drill. The width of the workpiece should be such that it is enough to cover the ends of the walls and protect it from moisture. Carved elements should be placed along the grain of the wood - this will prevent cracking. When choosing a stencil, it is better to pay attention to patterns with large elements, because

small ones will look crumpled, as a result of which the finish will not have the desired decorative effect.

Moreover, it is advisable to first familiarize yourself with photographs of different products. This way you can find a suitable option or get inspiration for creating something yourself.

Platbands

Installing the bottom trim at an angle

The lower strip of the casing can simultaneously serve as protection from precipitation. To do this, it is installed at an angle. The choice of inclination angle is no different - close to the roof inclination angle.

By installing the bottom bar at an angle. solving the problem of precipitation flowing in

The installation of this strip is simple. It is supported from below by triangles cut out of wood and fixed to the frame. The water will not flow down the wall, but at some distance from it. Here it is important to properly drain wastewater from the house so that the water does not wash away the foundation.

One at a time or in bulk?

Carved platbands usually consist of repeating elements. At least two vertical slats on each window are made identical. And since several windows are usually decorated, a lot of identical elements are required. If you are going to make slotted trims, you naturally want to cut out several pieces at the same time, stacking the boards and somehow securing them.

The applied carved platbands are also interesting

The desire is understandable, but difficult to implement, and the benefits over time are not as great as it seems. The first difficulty is that home craftsmen usually have jigsaws that are not very powerful. To cut through several boards, you have to move the saw more slowly along the intended pattern. On straight lines the speed is still tolerable, on curves it is low. And the smaller the bend radius, the slower you have to move the file. If you work with one board, there are no such problems. So, in terms of time, if there is any gain, it is very small.

One more thing. Even thick, good, expensive files with a large thickness of the workpiece are deflected. So, when cutting several boards at the same time, the quality of the slot on the bottom (or two) remains a big question.

Furniture filling for the living room

Before purchasing furniture for the living room, you should determine for what purpose it is needed:

  1. For placing and storing things.
  2. For receiving guests.

The standard option for the living room interior is the presence of:

  • Wardrobe.
  • Armchairs.
  • Sofa or sofa.
  • Coffee table.
  • Showcases.
  • Dining table (if space allows).

The most important attribute of the living room is a place to relax - a sofa. Many people are concerned with the question: “How to choose a sofa for the living room so that it is beautiful, comfortable and functional.”

First of all, you need to decide on the size of this piece of furniture, because if the area of the room is limited, a large product will not be appropriate

When choosing a sofa you should pay attention to several details:

  • Shape (straight, angular, U-shaped).
  • Degree of hardness (soft, medium hard, hard).
  • Quality frame and upholstery.
  • Manufacturing materials.
  • Execution style.

For small-sized apartments, designers advise choosing a classic or corner shape of a sofa, since this way you can significantly save space. You need to choose the degree of rigidity yourself, as you like.

Natural materials are preferable because they are more durable and safer for health. The execution style is selected in accordance with the main style of the living room.

Window casing materials

The traditional material is wood. But the care and maintenance of such platbands is expensive. And since most installed windows are plastic, the most commonly used material is plastic. And yet, for lovers of extraordinary solutions, there is a fairly large selection.

When choosing material for the casing, it is important to understand that it should serve as protection for the window.

Made of wood

The quality, durability and aesthetics of wood window elements directly depends on the selected species and its characteristics. Hardwoods (beech, ash, oak) and conifers are preferred. Soft-leaved trees require additional treatment with protective impregnations.

The most popular decorative trims are made of wood.

The advantage of wooden material is the almost limitless choice of patterned elements. The downside is that it is difficult to care for. It is necessary to inspect wooden elements annually and, if necessary, carry out additional impregnation, painting or treatment with antiseptic compounds.

Plastic

Products made from plastic panels are considered the most modern, because they are easy and convenient to care for.
The downside is the limited models and design solutions, and a small range of colors.

MDF

The most budget option is MDF trim. These are compressed wood and shredded wood fibers formed into the required product. The top is covered with laminated film of various colors. Imitations of stone, wood, marble, etc. are possible.

Typically, such platbands have the form of a plank with a pattern similar to natural wood.

This material does not require special care. But there is one drawback - the complete lack of moisture resistance. Elements made from MDF should absolutely not be installed outside the house.

Metal

Metal decor is a fairly inexpensive solution for window decoration that suits any style. Such platbands will maximally protect the house from moisture penetration. Suitable for brick or stone houses. In wooden residential premises they are installed quite rarely, mainly on metal-plastic windows.

Their production requires sheets of metal with a small thickness, which makes it possible to produce structures of various shapes.

The metal casing has the form of a galvanized narrow strip with a surface coating of wear-resistant paint. This decor will add rigor to any interior.

Purpose and classification

Platbands are long narrow strips that frame windows or doors. Based on this principle, a distinction is made between windows and doors. They usually differ in width, but in order to maintain a unified style, they must be made of the same material. In addition, they are made in a similar manner, using repeating elements and painting in the same color.

On houses in a modern style, carved window frames look good

Door and window frames serve not only to give the building/room a finished look, although this is also important. They also close the technological gap that forms between the door or window frame and the wall. After installing windows and doors, this gap is filled with insulation, but this does not improve the view, and water, dust and sound continue to penetrate into the room, albeit in smaller quantities. So they once came up with the idea of closing that gap with slats, and even decorating them.

Window trims: one of the classic options with shutters

Depending on the installation site, the platbands can be external or internal. The protective role is played mainly by platbands for external installation. Therefore, they are made from materials resistant to climatic factors (or coated with protective compounds) and the thickness of this material is usually greater. Internal platbands mainly perform a decorative function. They are operated under gentle conditions, therefore the requirements for the properties of the material are different - decorativeness is important, not resistance to climatic influences.

Adviсe

  • If you want to decorate your house with wooden trim, you can purchase selected material that has been kiln-dried. In such a chamber, moisture is rapidly removed from the wood, bringing its level to a maximum of 12 percent. Boards that are cracked and warped during drying are rejected, and only a high-quality product reaches the consumer. Therefore, when buying it, you don’t have to worry about the fate of future products.
  • It is better to look for boards that have undergone special treatment in hardware stores or sawmills. In no case should specimens have large knots, resin residues or other traces of a negative property that could make themselves felt when creating a pattern. It is best to order boards whose width is 10-15 centimeters and thickness 3-4.
  • Before starting the actual creation of platbands, it makes sense to hone the carver’s skills and the skill of creating a specific design on cheap boards.

When creating platbands, the owner of the house was given the opportunity to express himself, conveying certain information to others. For example, the sun in the center of the upper part of the casing means energy and life. The snake as a decorative element represents fertility and wisdom. The cross, inscribed in the carved decor of the window frame, symbolizes the harmony of spiritual and material aspirations.

Floral ornaments personify unity with nature, and such a common element as earrings signals the hospitality of the owners of the house. The frog is a sign of continuity of life and resurrection.

Kinds

Carved window frames can be made from plastic, MDF, fiberboard, metal and wood.

The most common and common option is wooden. They look great, often striking with rich carvings, and can be restored. Maple, alder or birch, as well as pine, are often chosen as the basis for creating figured elements. Such wood cannot be called particularly resistant and durable, but it is easy to cut and inexpensive.

For the manufacture of small elements, apple or cherry trees are often chosen.

There are several types of wooden platbands:

  • Flat. There is no “decorative subtext” in them. Such models are used for only one purpose - closing cracks in the house in the most economical way.
  • Shaped. The models have a convex surface. They may have protrusions and depressions in the form of cut-out patterns. In such “frames” the windows look very elegant. Window shutters are often especially expressive.
  • Curly. Such products are distinguished by their special individuality, originality of shapes and slotted elements. They can fully be called decorative elements of the house. To make these products, you need a vertical milling machine.

The problem with wooden frames is that over the years the material can darken, crack or rot. To prevent this, they must be periodically treated with a protective varnish.

Metal trims look no worse than wooden ones and organically fit into the appearance of a facade decorated using siding. The material allows you to decorate the product with complex patterns and combined colors. Such platbands are durable and can be installed without much difficulty. But we should not forget that metal is susceptible to corrosion, so measures must be taken to prevent traces of rust from appearing on the frame around the windows.

PVC windows are best decorated with plastic trim. Unlike wooden ones, these can be made in any shape and color. They will not crack over the years, will not rot, and will not be eaten by insects. The products are easy to install. They last a long time and do not require special care.

The only problem is that these products cannot be made independently, and manufacturers do not offer options with truly fine relief carvings.

Fiberboard allows you to make any designs on it and is easy to process. That is why it is often used to decorate windows. To prevent such products from absorbing water over time and deteriorating, they must be laminated before use.

The carving itself also differs by type.

  • Proreznaya. It is created over the entire area of the casing and resembles airy lace.
  • Invoice. In this case, the openwork elements are placed on a solid base, to which they are glued or nailed. With this approach, thinner, lighter and clearer ornaments are obtained than when using blind carvings (not through).

Platbands also differ in the type of installation.

  • The overlays are simply attached to the wall near the window and nailed with nails without heads, or glued on.
  • Telescopic ones with L-shaped protrusions are inserted into the gaps between the window frame and the wall. Installing them is not as easy as overhead ones, but they provide more reliable isolation of the joint from external influences.
