Window decoration for the New Year
Window decoration for New Year 2022
Joint expression of creativity on window panes can become a real family tradition or a prelude to the main winter holiday, which children will definitely observe. After all, they can draw on glass on their own if their parents prepare simple stencils for them.
From the article you can get ideas for creating your own unique winter pictures on glass.
New Year's drawings from paper on windows: ideas, photos
You can cut out figures or entire scenes from paper onto windows and use them to create a New Year’s atmosphere. Such cut out drawings from paper are called “vytynanka”.
Silhouettes of New Year's heroes, snowmen and gnomes, Christmas trees and New Year's balls are cut out for windows. You can cut out forest animals, Father Frost and the Snow Maiden, bells, running deer or a scattering of stars.
- The templates that you choose to decorate the window must be printed and cut out. (templates in the article are in the pictures just below and at the end of the article).
- The window must first be wiped dry, otherwise the paper design will not stick.
- After this, one side of the drawing needs to be greased with soapy water and glued to the window glass.

How to draw New Year's drawings on windows?
Today, window glass can be painted using special washable paints, and templates are used to make the drawing smooth and beautiful. Thanks to such devices, you can draw a picture on the window for the New Year in a rather unusual way.
If you did not have time to purchase washable paint for painting on windows, then do not be upset. You have a few more methods that have worked well when applying a pattern to window glass.
You can draw on windows:
- children's stained glass paints (provided the design is applied not to the window, but to the glass)
- toothpaste
- gouache
- special means for New Year's paintings on glass
- Or use a rather exotic composition for drawing: apply PVA glue to the surface of the window using a stencil, and then stick on glitter and tinsel. The drawing will turn out much more interesting: it will look a little fluffy. Beautiful winter patterns on glass can be created using: finger paints
- artificial snow
- an ordinary piece of toilet soap (example below in the penultimate picture)

Powdered sugar, flour and semolina
This is one of the simplest and most delicious techniques for painting window glass. Small children can participate in the process - for them this activity will become real magic.
Using a direct stencil, we apply an adhesive base to clean glass - honey or sugar syrup diluted in water. Then we spray powdered sugar on it, using a soft sponge or microfiber sponge. Let the patterns dry, then remove the stencil and brush off excess powder with a brush.
To create a transparent design against the background of a sweet “snow fog”, we take a reverse stencil from thin paper. Apply syrup to it so that a wide outline is formed along the outer edge. Next, dust the picture and the area around it with a dry soft brush, barely touching the glass.
To create New Year's patterns on syrup, you can use flour instead of powdered sugar - the pattern turns out almost the same: maybe a little less airy and more contrasting.
And if you take syrup and semolina, the coarse grain and slightly yellowish color of the picture will resemble an old photo from a family archive. Apply the cereal onto the syrup in a thin layer using a slightly damp sponge or hard brush.
Note: this interesting effect occurs only in silhouette drawings—semolina is not suitable for working with reverse stencils.
What should you give up when decorating windows for the New Year?
If you do not want the spirit of the New Year’s celebration, as well as cheerful faces and New Year’s drawings, to stay with you for the entire next year, then do not use the following compositions and paints:
- watercolor paints - they wash off much harder than gouache paints
- stained glass paints used by professional artists - they do not wash off at all
You can also draw using artificial snow.

How to draw New Year's drawings on windows with gouache and paints: tips, description of the process
Do you want to turn into a wizard and create a unique winter ornament on your window? Then arm yourself with colors and go ahead: create a warm and joyful mood for the Christmas and New Year holidays!
The process of applying a multi-colored picture to a window:
- To make the images even and symmetrical, use stencils to apply them to glass. If you haven’t stocked up on them in advance, then choose from those presented in this article.
- After we have decided what will be drawn and where, we apply the stencils to the window glass to see how the pattern will be approximately located and how much space it will take up on the window.
- If one drawing is not enough, we will select another one in a similar theme.
- We apply the stencil to the glass, fix it with tape, and use a brush to fill the empty areas inside the stencil with paint or toothpaste.
- After all the empty areas on the stencil are filled with paint, you need to wait until the picture dries.
- We add details and erase with a stick all the lines and strokes that spoil the picture.
- Take a thin brush and add small details.
- For the splashing effect we need a toothbrush. Take some paint and water onto a brush and spray it over the surface of the glass.
Applying paint using a stencil After the paint has dried, you can add details with a stick
No Color
As the name suggests, selecting this option will leave the shape with no fill, with empty pixels inside. What is it for? Well, in some cases you may only need the circuit itself. Also, often you only need a stroke with transparent pixels inside.
Below is a simple example of what a form looks like without a color fill. All we see is the main outline of the form, which is called “Path”. The outline only appears in the Photoshop document, so if you save your work as a JPEG or PNG, or print it, the outline will not be visible. To make it visible, we must add a stroke to it, which we will look at how to add next:
Rectangle shape without fill or stroke.
How to draw New Year's pictures on windows with toothpaste?
The frosty pattern on the windows is drawn with toothpaste using cotton swabs like this:
- buy toothpaste (the cheapest one will be snow-white, or with a bluish tint)
- stencils are prepared (purchased or cut out of cardboard)
- cut small pieces of tape to secure the stencils to the glass
- the window is washed first (after you draw a New Year's picture on the glass, you will have to wash it again after the holidays)
- prepare a toothbrush or a thick brush for painting (if the stencils are large enough, then the voids in them can be filled with paint with your fingers)
- frosty patterns are drawn with a cotton swab, as shown in the picture below
Here's a frosty pattern you can draw on a window with toothpaste and a cotton swab
Before starting work, cut out the stencil. Find any interesting drawing that fits the theme and transfer it to cardboard or thick paper.
- Have you chosen snowflakes? Then cut out large snowflakes using nail scissors (after all, there will be a lot of small parts) and for small ones use a shaped hole punch.
- After the figures are cut out, we divide the stencil into separate elements and secure them well with transparent tape on the glass.
- We put toothpaste on a brush or on a finger, or on a toothbrush (which you will no longer use) and put it into the holes cut out in the stencil.
- We wait a little until the toothpaste “sets” and remove the stencil, trying not to smear the edges.
- Again we look for a place for the drawing and repeat the whole procedure again.
- A stencil is necessary for those who find it difficult to apply the correct lines on the glass the first time.
- You can use a drawing template, printed or redrawn on a sheet of Whatman paper, which is taped to the outside of the window. You can draw along the finished contour.
- Another way to apply a design to a window is to use a stencil. The drawing must be printed and cut along the inner contour with scissors.
Before applying the design, the paper or cardboard stencil is moistened with water so that it stops “riding” on the glass.
Even a small child can fill in the empty areas of the stencil.
Methods for applying paint, artificial snow or toothpaste:
- blow out the gaps with artificial snow
- Spray the holes with toothpaste (the toothbrush must be wet first)
- dip the sponge into the paint and fill the holes in the drawing
In the picture below you can see how the application process occurs.
Application in the interior
Every person wants to see beautiful landscapes from their windows in the morning. But not everyone has such an opportunity. Most city apartment windows overlook other buildings or city roads. You can transform the interior of a room with the help of a false structure, which will open up to sea beaches, picturesque valleys, and flower fields.
Modern designers are able to realize any wishes of clients. They intelligently expand the space of the rooms, making blank walls look into another world.
Thanks to the variety of materials when creating false windows, structures of any shape and size can be made. The use of 3D technologies makes it possible to create realistic pictures that change the perception of housing.
Interior decoration using window imitation
Most creative people use false structures in their homes to lift their spirits in the morning and as decoration. The advantages of installing them include the ability to:
- admire the beautiful view from your room;
- visually enlarge the space and bring maximum light into it;
- highlight the interior of the house, make it original and as comfortable as possible for living.
With the help of false window openings, you can conveniently use non-functional niches, corners, and problem areas in the house. By decorating the imitation with curtains, you will make it more realistic.
Hiding design flaws
In addition to decorative functions, false windows will help hide minor wall defects and mistakes made in construction. Sometimes situations develop in such a way that you simply cannot do without them. This happens if:
- The space between the windows is inappropriate and non-functional. In this case, mirror false structures are used;
- The room (library, study) is located in a bad place and in a dark corner of the apartment. The false structure will fill the room with additional light;
- small room. It is important to use photographic images here;
- The corridor is too dark, some light needs to be brought in.

Now you need to make a snow-covered window by spraying toothpaste.
Ready-made stickers
You can decorate glass not only with stained glass pictures, figures made of paper and glue, or drawings with toothpaste.
If you don’t have time, and the New Year’s window as a result is more important to you than the process of creating it, ready-made self-adhesive stickers are at your service.
Their variety will not let you get bored: white, colored, plain transparent, matte with glitter and mirror, paper and vinyl.
Simply remove the sticker from the mounting backing, place it on the glass and smooth it out. That's it - the drawing is ready!
How to spray toothpaste with a brush over a stencil to create a snow-covered window and outline of the design?
See the pictures below for the process of spraying toothpaste with a toothbrush on glass.
- Wet the toothbrush in water with dissolved toothpaste.
- Spray on the glass as shown in the pictures below.

If you want the drawing to dry faster, you can turn on the hair dryer on a low setting with a cold air stream and dry the paint or toothpaste.
Children will be happy to help you decorate the house and paint the windows. And it’s always more joyful for adults this way.
Tell your child about the intricacies of painting on windows and show them with an example. This activity contributes to the development of real taste and awakens artistic talent.
Having drawn a New Year's drawing with your child, you will be surprised next time how rich the child's imagination actually is and how inventive he can be.
While drawing on windows together, it’s a good idea to tell your young assistant about the safety rules:
- you can't eat the paint
- You can only paint a window from the inside, without opening it
- You can't lean on the glass

What can you draw on the window?
The tradition of decorating windows with simple pictures arose in the distant past.
- for the Celts to decorate shutters and window sills. Fir branches were used for this purpose. The Celts believed that in this way evil spirits were driven away from the house.
- for the Chinese to hang bells in front of the windows, which made various sounds. The purpose of such jewelry is to scare away evil demons with their pleasant sound.
- In Russia, they began to decorate glass from the time of Peter I. In one of his decrees, it was ordered to decorate not only the forest coniferous beauty, but also the entire home for the holiday.
- During the Soviet period, apartments were decorated with paper snowflakes, fabric compositions, and simple patterns were applied using toothpaste.
What can you draw on the window?
Even if you were not born a talented artist, then, using original templates and paint, you can easily create a real “window” masterpiece that you won’t want to wipe off after the holidays.
“Snowy” paintings on the windows help create an indescribable feeling of a warm family celebration. What New Year's scenes can you most often see on windows:
- frosty patterns, snowflakes
- Father Frost and Santa Claus with constant bags of gifts
- Christmas trees and snowmen
- Santa Claus rushing across the sky in a sleigh pulled by reindeer
- large Christmas balls and garlands
- stories from fairy tales about winter
New Year's theme is not the only option for applying a picture to the window. The traditional plot will be complemented by the following drawing:
- funny face, gnomes and bunnies, snow slides
- bear cubs and snow-covered Christmas trees
- houses against the backdrop of winter landscapes
Christmas scenes look impressive on windows:
- angels
- candles
- Bible scenes
The main thing to remember is that any picture on the window must meet the following requirements: be light and airy. You cannot overload the drawing with additional elements and draw out all the details.
And this is what Santa Claus draws on the windows
Types of false windows
There is a wide variety of false windows. The most common are fake windows:
- drawn;
- photo wallpaper;
- mirrored;
- ceiling;
- with backlight;
- virtual.
Painted windows and photo wallpapers
Imitating window openings using photo wallpaper allows you to reveal landscapes with exotic beaches, sandy coasts, and majestic architectural spaces. On the wall you can depict an opening with a frame, from which a view of the picturesque landscape will open. Photo wallpapers are in great demand among consumers, as they are available in a wide range.
Photo wallpapers are glued to a perfectly flat and smooth surface. A wooden frame can be attached to the edges. To make the image realistic, designers use real window sills and plexiglass. Here it is appropriate to hang curtains that match the overall interior of the room. You can place fresh flowers on the windowsill.
Drawn pictures can depict not only landscapes, but also curtains, frames, a window sill, a curtain. Frames can be either open or closed. Open frames will bring lightness and freedom to the room. You can draw an imitation of a window opening in any room by using an empty corner or niche. Designs where one curtain is painted and the other is real look very interesting.
Artistic depiction is not a cheap pleasure. But with it you can diversify the interior, make it exclusive and original. A good artist will be able to draw any picture, based on the requirements and wishes of customers.
False windows with lighting
A backlit window will create the illusion of daylight. This design solution will significantly change the main lighting of the room. You can backlight using different light sources:
- LEDs;
- energy saving lamps;
- LED strips.
When designing a structure with lighting, electrical wires and cables must be laid in advance.
Ceiling openings with lighting look original. They are recommended to be installed in children's bedrooms.
If you make a fake illuminated window using stained glass or frosted glass and depicting a colorful spring landscape, you will get rid of apathy and depression. A colorful picture will dispel any melancholy and despondency.
Illuminated framed windows will fit perfectly into any interior design. They are recommended to be installed in dark rooms.
The use of illuminated stained glass will fill the room with sophistication and aristocracy. This option will suit any classic style.
Mirror false windows
Mirror imitations can visually enlarge a room. They are made from a whole mirror or mirror tiles. The mirror is attached to a prepared, flat surface. There are several options for attaching mirror false products:
- A frame made of wood, metal or plastic is attached to a mirror attached to the wall. Next, the structure is decorated with curtains, a window sill and other accessories.
- First, the frame is assembled, then mirror tiles, polystyrene or plexiglass are inserted into it. This design is attached to the wall in a ready-made form.
It is not recommended to cover mirror structures with thick curtains, otherwise they will lose their aesthetics and individuality.
Ceiling false windows
False ceiling windows can be mounted on a wall or ceiling.
A window on the ceiling will provide a view of the starry or cloudy sky. It is best to mount it on a suspended ceiling, although a flat surface can also be used.
Despite the complexity of installation, such techniques are used by designers quite often. It will be relevant to use an imitation ceiling window in attics. A combined version of a suspended structure and a stretch ceiling will help you create any design: images of space, sky, stars, treetops.
In such false openings it is recommended to use lighting. The light level can be controlled depending on the time of day.
Virtual window
In Europe, virtual openings are a common phenomenon. In our country they are extremely rare. Their main advantage is a live picture. At the request of the owners, the image of the fake window can be changed regularly. What is it? These are LCD panels connected to a computer. They are controlled by a special program on a PC. Thanks to modern technologies, the video displayed on the screen makes the picture very believable and realistic.
