Selecting curtains for trapezoidal windows: how to get out of the situation

Features of trapezoid-shaped windows

These products have their own characteristics:

  • the minimum corner radius must be at least 35°, otherwise the structure will not have the required rigidity and strength;
  • plastic profiles are used only with reinforced reinforcement;
  • if there are opening flaps, they are divided into several parts (the opening flap, as a rule, has a standard rectangular shape).

Windows of complex shape are often complemented by imposts and decorative partitions.
This is used not only for decoration purposes, but also to increase the rigidity of the product. When choosing trapezoidal windows, you need to take into account a number of requirements for their manufacture and installation. To learn more about this, watch the video.

Types of trapezoidal plastic windows

Deaf

They don't open. Usually small in size. Mounted in attics and attics for better lighting.

Single leaf

They can open and close by turning, tilting or a combination.

Bivalve

With one fixed and one opening leaf. They open similarly to single-leaf structures.

Multi-leaf

Combined systems with a large area are often installed in rooms under roofs.

What are beveled trapezoidal windows made of?

Non-standard window structures consist of the following elements:

  • profile. Wooden, made of oak, pine or larch wood, plastic with reinforced reinforcement - from German manufacturers Rehau and KBE, or budget domestic Novotex, as well as aluminum Provedal can be used;
  • functional double-glazed window, which can be energy-saving, multifunctional, shockproof or noise-proof;
  • fittings used in the presence of opening sashes.

How to design trapezoidal bevels?

First, let's figure out what ways out of the situation exist. It is clear that you cannot simply hang curtains on sloping cornices - they will slide down. So some tricks will be required. The second nuance is whether the curtains will cover the window tightly, move apart or go up. The third is whether the shape of the cornice will follow the outline of the window opening, or will hide it. Fourth, is it planned to completely decorate the window with textiles, or can the top be open? Depending on the answers, design options may vary.

What types of curtains can be used to frame non-standard window openings:

- pleated;

- blinds;

- Roman models;

- curtains or drapes with eyelets;

- ordinary rectangular curtains or curtains.

What situation - what veils?

Now let's apply each model to a specific situation.

If you plan to close the window opening tightly to protect it from the bright sun (for example, if there is a home theater on the attic floor), it is most practical to install pleated curtains. They can be used to decorate windows of the most broken outlines. The only clarification: such curtains need to be ordered.

If the height of the ceilings allows, you can successfully use ordinary straight cornices and curtains for the same purposes. This option is suitable for adherents of traditional canons. At the same time, the textile fabric will hide the geometry of the structure and turn the window into an ordinary rectangular one.

If you need practicality, conciseness and functionality (for example, in the bathroom), vertical blinds are also suitable. They are also made to order, based on the specific shape and size of the desired window. Unlike pleated curtains, these curtains can, to a certain extent, regulate the amount of light entering the room.

When good lighting is required (usually in the kitchen), you can use the Roman model. The rim will also have to be made to order (although with some skills you can sew it yourself), from three canvases: two of them will have beveled upper parts, and the middle will be straight. Lifting mechanisms will allow you to regulate the amount of light entering and shade the room in the sun, and when more light is needed (for cooking time, for example), the canvases can be raised.

Double-glazed windows that improve heat and sound insulation

The use of functional double-glazed windows will help improve the heat and sound insulation performance of installed products:

energy-saving double glazing

suitable for the southern and southwestern sides of buildings, provides warmth in cold weather and coolness in hot weather, thanks to the ability to reflect heat into a warmer space;

multifunctional double glazed window

reflects warm air into an environment with a higher temperature, promoting heat loss in the cold season and coolness in the summer, is optimal for installing glazing on the sunny side of the house;

soundproof double glazed window

reduces the noise level in the room and creates comfortable living conditions in buildings located close to the source of constant sounds;

impact-resistant glass unit

resists targeted impacts for a long time and does not create traumatic fragments when broken.

Design methods

Decoration becomes a whole problem with such windows. After all, to hang curtains, you will need a special cornice. In addition, you should take into account the design style of the room, and, taking it into account, choose the shape, color and texture of the curtains.

Constant sliding is the main problem with curtains on triangular windows. To solve this problem, you will need special wooden blocks at the bottom of the cornice. Let's look at the step-by-step installation of bars:

  • Initially, you should carefully take measurements from the structure.
  • You should purchase ready-made bars or cut them yourself.
  • Secure the block under the window.
  • Attach Velcro to the block.
  • Take a braid with fringe; it can be used to drape curtains and secure with Velcro.
  • Hooks are installed on the top at equal distances.
  • You should attach rings or loops to the curtain; they will be used to regulate the closing and opening of the curtains.

If it is necessary to open curtains or curtains, elements should be provided with which they will be fixed in the open or closed position.

You can use pleated curtains instead of ordinary ones. A wide variety of colors allows them to be used in almost any interior. In addition, pleated curtains are made from many materials such as fabric and plastic. Their advantages include:

  • Long service life, thanks to coating with a special composition to increase resistance to external irritants.
  • They fit harmoniously into almost any interior style.
  • It is possible to install them on windows of any configuration.
  • Pleated curtains are mounted on a frame, so it is possible to install a device for opening and closing.
  • Models with grommets will perfectly decorate triangular windows, especially those installed in baroque or classical style. There are several varieties of them, and each has its own configuration and special style.
  • These curtains come in various shapes (round, triangular, multi-faceted), various colors (multi-color, two-color, with rhinestones, glossy). Also, these curtains can imitate natural wood, stone, and steel.

These curtains are made from steel or plastic. The grommet ranges from 15 to 50 mm. Such curtains can be installed without a cornice. To install them, you only need to have hooks made at the same distance from each other.

Flaws

They are limited by peculiar technical features. As mentioned earlier, their minimum angle is 39 degrees. The minimum angle for opening windows is 40 degrees in the sashes, this is what ensures their full operation. The maximum number of cameras in such a window is a three-chamber profile. It is difficult to order with a large number of cameras due to the complexity of manufacturing.

We sew ourselves

There is another way to fix the curtains on the sloping sides of the windows so that the fabric does not “move”: attach it to the curtain rods using Velcro tape (Velcro). You can sew this model with your own hands. To make a pattern, you need to measure the length of all the upper parts and the length of the product down. In terms of width, depending on the splendor of the model, the assembly factor is set (it can be small - 0.5-0.7 or larger (up to 2.5). Multiplying the total width of the window by this figure, we get the required width of the canvas. We calculate the length taking into account allowances for processing seams.To build patterns, you need to include an assembly factor in the design in each of the three sections (center and sides) and take into account the bevel angle.

Next, we sew the side and bottom sections with a hem seam. You need to attach the soft part of the Velcro to the upper cut.

Instead of a cornice, it is better to take a wooden beam, which we cover with the same fabric from which we sew the curtain (or a denser one, in color, if it is a curtain). Using a furniture stapler, we shoot the hard part of the Velcro tape onto the beam. That, in fact, is all the wisdom. We iron the curtains and attach the cornice to the wall. Just remember that such a curtain will not move apart. If a sliding model is needed, it is cut from two parts and then the finished curtain is secured with tiebacks. Variants of such curtains, in which both halves have a middle horizontal part, look beautiful. Then with the tiebacks they will also look crossed crosswise in the center.

As you can see, designing even the most non-standard window openings is not such an insurmountable task. The main thing is to take into account the necessary functionality of the future window decoration and decide whether the curtain will be purchased to order or made in-house.
