How to choose curtains for tulle: tips for choosing

In addition to the color scheme, when selecting curtains for tulle, the types of fabrics and the rules for their compatibility are taken into account:

  • The combination of natural materials and synthetics is considered undesirable. Next to each other they contrast noticeably, creating dissonance.
  • In the composition you can use curtains made of cotton and viscose with tulle made of polyester and viscose. Both fabrics drape well, and the viscose used in them adds shine.
  • For multi-row curtains, it is recommended to combine fabrics that are similar in composition. Taffeta can be used together with chiffon. Linen and chintz will not suit it.
  • Satin curtains with a glossy sheen look good with tulle and emphasize its airiness.
  • Linen fabrics are combined with tulle in the form of a fine mesh.
  • Massive dark curtains are combined with organza tulle.
  • In order not to overload the interior, in small rooms tulle is used without heavy curtains.

Types of cornices and their features

There are different designs of curtain rods. They all have their own advantages and disadvantages. Initially, the type of design was determined by the material of manufacture, but the development of technology has practically eliminated the difference and made it possible to manufacture samples of any shape and size. Today, the choice of design is determined by the features of the interior and the structure of the ceiling or walls of the room. Let's look at the types of curtain rods.

String

Such structures consist of two rigidly fixed brackets, between which a steel wire is stretched. A special feature of these products is the ability to adjust the length to the size of the room with an accuracy of millimeters. Typically, string cornices are attached to the ceiling slab. This somewhat limits their use due to the widespread fashion for suspended or suspended ceilings. The tension force of the string requires a strong and very rigid supporting plane, otherwise it will be deformed or completely destroyed.

The appearance of string cornices leaves much to be desired, so they are usually covered with decorative panels or hidden under the ledge of a suspended ceiling, plasterboard structure or other masking element. The cost of such products is the lowest, they will suit almost any interior, which has made string samples the most common of all alternative varieties.

Tubular or rod

This design is a tube supported by two (for longer lengths, three are used) brackets. A special feature of this type is the open placement of the tube, so it should look attractive. There are metal, wooden or plastic products of rod construction. To attach curtains, rings with hooks (hooks, clothespins or “crocodiles”) are strung onto the tube.

There are tubular curtain rods for plastic windows without drilling, which are a telescopic type structure. They form a spacer installed between the frame slopes. This is a type of mini cornice, sometimes called a "cafe". A good option for rooms that do not allow attaching conventional types - with suspended (suspended) ceilings or plasterboard walls.

Tire

These are flat slats with longitudinal channels in which curtain hooks are installed. They are mounted only on the ceiling, which somewhat limits their use in high rooms

The advantage of such structures is that they are compact, neat, and do not attract attention. Suitable for any interior, although in rooms with expensive furniture sets made of natural wood it is better to look for other options

The disadvantage of tire kits is the difficulty of replacing hooks, which often break. For installation, holes are made in the strip and sockets are drilled for dowels in the ceiling slab. If a suspended ceiling is installed, it is necessary to pre-attach support platforms at the level of the tension web. The tires are attached to them through the film. The method is rather dubious, since any damage to the canvas is fraught with its destruction. This must be kept in mind when planning the installation of a cornice.

Profile

This is a type of rail curtain rod designed for installation on a wall. It is a durable aluminum profile that is mounted on brackets. The advantage of this design is that any height of the cornice from the ceiling is allowed. Disadvantage - can only be used for light curtains or curtains made of tulle. The reason for this is that the distance of the profile strip from the wall is about 20 cm. This creates a lever that, with great force, is capable of tearing the cornice away from the load-bearing plane.

Sometimes profile and tire types are confused with each other. It is easy to distinguish them - the profile is attached to the wall on brackets, and the bus can only be screwed to the ceiling.

Baguette

Stylish, visually attractive option. It is a strip of baguette covering a string, profile or bus support structure for curtains. You can use a single-row or double-row system. It is noteworthy that the baguette itself performs only a decorative function, being, in fact, only a decoration.

Its advantages are:

  • wide choice of sizes, materials and colors of baguette profiles.
  • the ability to combine an unattractive system with any interior, furniture, wall decoration style or curtain material.

The use of baguette cornices makes it possible to correct installation defects, hide unattractive curtain hangers, and decorate the supporting system. This made baguette designs popular and in demand.

Types of curved cornices

To curtain windows on a protruding facade, you need an arched console with multi-row highways. The semicircular model for curtains consists of sections of rods connected by hinges or adapters. Unlike solid curtains, due to the fastening features, they are inferior in reliability, although they are made of durable materials:

  • aluminum and steel;
  • wood;
  • hard plastic;
  • combined invoices.

Profile

The main advantage of curtains is the ability to repeat the architectural shape of the opening. Samples with a polyurethane or aluminum base are durable and bend within a radius of 10 cm. The bending coefficient of plastic curtains is higher, but metal curtains are more reliable. The kit includes sliders, clamps, and side plugs. Some manufacturers include adhesive tape in their kits.

Tire

Cornices are made of plastic and metal specifically for the design of non-standard openings. They have 3 rows of guides and can support voluminous curtains made of jacquard, velor, and tapestry. The canvases cling to hooks and move in the grooves with runners. The fabric decor is held on by Velcro tape. Wall and ceiling mounted. Busbar and profile curtains are usually equipped with an electric drive that automatically regulates the throughput of the light beams.

Plastic

For curtains with an external rail, the fastening elements are located at the top. The canvases are held by rollers that roll freely back and forth. To hide technical details, the system is installed in a niche. If you attach an LED strip nearby, backlit curtains will uniquely decorate the interior.

Photo curtains

Curtains with photo printing will be an interesting element of room decor; they are more difficult to match to the interior, because in most cases they are not monochrome, but have a colored pattern:

Corner curtains with an internal rail are manufactured by manufacturers in two versions: aluminum and polymer. Most often found in a single-row design. Mounted on horizontal and vertical walls. As a decoration, a decorative strip is installed on top.

Universal rods

The designs are no different from a regular cornice. Curtains made of brass, aluminum, and stainless steel in various designs filled store windows. They combine perfectly in the interior with wood, plastic, and glass. Combined models with enamel and plastic coating look nice. The original shapes of the tips perform a decorative function. The presence of a connecting rotating element ensures a tight fit to the corner. Curtains are hung with clips, rings, eyelets, and loops. Curtain rod photo:

Strings

Multi-row suspensions with tensioned strings are equipped with clips or hooks. The absence of a decorative strip does not distract attention from the textile design. However, thin steel strings are not designed for long spans and thick curtains. Mainly intended for fixing light fabrics - chiffon, silk, cotton, voile lambrequins. The advantage is low cost, easy installation.

Roller blinds for windows

The popularity of roller blinds has recently been gaining momentum; they got their name because of the twisting mechanism, as a result of which they turn into rolls, due to which they take up very little space in the house, it is very practical, see for yourself:

Flexible curtain rods

They are made of aluminum and polyurethane and differ in bending radius. If necessary, they can easily take the desired shape. Equipped with runners and hooks. If you plan to hang a curtain ensemble of several canvases, hang a separate curtain for each. Suitable for small bay windows, arched openings.

The choice of design depends on personal preference. The cost is determined by the type and material. If it is not possible to purchase a ready-made model, you can make the console yourself. You will need 2 identical rods and an angle adapter for connection.

Types of windows for corner openings

Corner windows in private houses are divided into two types:

  • windows equipped with a corner impost - a special supporting structure;
  • windows without corner impost.

Windows with a support structure are less expensive than those without a support structure. When choosing the color of the impost, you need to take into account the shades of the window trims. Large windows must be equipped with special supports.

Options without a support bar are more expensive due to the design features. They do not have a bar at the joint that forms the corner. Such windows are installed for a panoramic view. They are very popular among owners of private houses, as they allow an unframed view of an unusual area. You can also find such options in multi-storey buildings in Moscow.

Installations without a supporting structure are connected with a special glue that does not spoil the aesthetics of the window.

To open the window, you can install a special sliding mechanism. Special connections are not noticeable and almost invisible. Such windows provide good natural light in the room. To achieve a higher level of thermal insulation, preference should be given to blind options without a strip. Some experts advise making a mixed type of windows: one side should be blank, and the other should be able to open.

Features of corner windows

There are several types of corner windows:

  • one opening located at the junction of the walls;
  • bay windows;
  • two openings located in the corner of the room on adjacent walls.

Despite the different locations of the windows, the design of the curtains should emphasize the advantages and hide the disadvantages of the openings. In order not to disturb the visual unity of the composition, if the partition between the windows is very small or absent altogether, it is recommended to use cornices with a special connecting element or flexible models

When choosing corner curtains, you need to be guided by the style and proportions of the room, it is also important to take into account the functional features of the space

A model of curtains that combines several windows into a complete composition

In the interior

Due to the unusual design, decorating corner windows with curtains often causes difficulties, so we suggest looking at the most interesting ideas in photo examples.

A short lambrequin connecting the corner windows allows light to enter the room. This solution is relevant for shaded spaces or for decorating terraces. In the bedroom and living room, in order to create a comfortable atmosphere for relaxation, it is additionally recommended to hang tulle, compact roller blinds, Roman blinds or horizontal blinds.

An elegant lambrequin will decorate the space, but it is not functional, but only plays an aesthetic role

Asymmetrical curtains, as in the bottom photo, look much more compact than traditional curtains. Mirror models optically push the boundaries and help adjust the proportions of space.

The mirroring effect supports the classic style of the interior, and the absence of heavy drapery in the corner makes the composition easier

Heavy multi-layer curtains are appropriate in the living room; the room becomes especially cozy and solemn. But in a small room, it is recommended to use fabrics that match the main decoration with this curtain design so that the curtain does not look too heavy.

Beautiful decoration of the living room with corner curtains; this design is relevant for all classic, as well as for romantic and modern styles

Corner windows occupy a relatively large area, so in the kitchen it is recommended to abandon heavy curtains in favor of compact and light curtains. The most popular design options for a kitchen window are shown in the photo.

Blinds, airy curtains and elegant lambrequins are the best solution for decorating windows in the kitchen

Modern and minimalist styles do not tolerate unnecessary details, so the design of curtains for corner windows should be restrained and laconic.
To decorate openings, you should choose simple curtains with a minimum of details. Since in this case decorations are inappropriate, it is better to give preference to expensive high-quality fabrics, which in themselves will decorate the interior. In minimalist interiors, when decorating windows, you should rely not on the complexity and pomp of the curtain style, but on the beautiful texture of the fabric

Selection of location and calculation of fastening

Before picking up a drill, determine at what height to hang the curtain rod, and also set the length of the structure and the offset from the plane of the window opening. The minimum requirements for the mounting location of the cornice are as follows:

  • The length of the wall system should be wider than the window opening (protrude beyond) by 30-50 cm.
  • The fastening line is selected at a distance of at least 5 cm from the upper edge of the window slope.
  • The curtain fabric should be located at a distance of at least 5-7 cm from the window frame. This will allow you to open the window comfortably.
  • Leave at least (or preferably more) 10 cm from the plane of the curtains to the wall. This way the fabric will not deform, touching the window sill and radiator.

Installation with an indentation from the ceilingSource www.flatproject.ru

The choice of distance from the cornice to the ceiling does not have clear criteria; it comes down to individual preferences. However, the location of the curtains affects the perception of the window opening and the entire room as a whole and solves different problems:

Installation with a minimum height (10 cm from the top edge of the window). The size of the window opening is visually reduced

This technique can be used if you need to concentrate on interior details. The cornice line runs halfway between the window and the ceiling. Convenient reception for high (above 2.8-3 m) rooms

The window looks neat and fits better into the interior, emphasizing its status. In small rooms the rule applies: the higher the structure is fixed, the more attractive the window looks. Therefore, the installation line can be moved from the middle above, leaving no more than 10 cm to the ceiling. Ceiling installation. The best option for standard premises. The room visually looks higher, and the strip of wall above the window is masked with fabric and does not break the perception.

Assembly and installation

Despite the rather complex design, the corner option is easy to install with your own hands. If desired, you can make a corner curtain rod of the required length yourself. To do this, you will need 2 ordinary cornices and a special rotating element to fasten them. Before hanging such a combination, you need to carefully calculate all the necessary dimensions, including the mounting height.

If you bought a ready-made cornice, then before hanging it with your own hands, carefully read the instructions. This will help protect you from troubles after installation.

Each specific option has its own installation algorithm, but in any case it will consist of the following important steps:

  1. Surface measurement and preliminary marking. This will help you choose the right not only the size of the curtain rod, but also the required height of the curtains and the optimal distance from the window opening.
  2. Unpacking and pre-assembly. After removal from the packaging, the product must be laid on a flat surface and prepared for further assembly.
  3. Installation. The pre-assembled curtain rod is placed in place and secured.

In the photo you can see step-by-step instructions on how to hang a corner cornice in the bathroom with your own hands.

Installation

The work begins with assembling the structure into a finished product. It is most convenient to use the manufacturer’s instructions, which indicate the required number of support elements and the distances between them. Before hanging curtain rods on the wall, you need to transfer the markings to the wall.

To work you will need a tape measure, ruler, pencil or marker. You should also prepare a screwdriver, drill, brackets and fastening material (dowels, screws).

All measurements must be made relative to the ceiling, since it often has a slope invisible to the eye. If you apply markings relative to the horizon line, after installation the tilt may appear and the curvature will be obvious. Work is carried out in the following order:

The first landmark will be the center of the window. This point simultaneously shows the distance to the ceiling (if it is intended to be left).

Marking with a ruler with a levelSource avatars.mds.yandex.net

  • Segments are laid off from the central point in both directions, indicating the places where the brackets are fixed.
  • At the designated points, holes are drilled and dowels are hammered into them, which have different appearances depending on the wall material. If the wall is brick, the dowels are replaced with wooden plugs into which self-tapping screws are screwed.
  • When the dowels are fixed, brackets are hung on them and fixed; A cornice is installed on them, not forgetting to first place rings with clothespins on it.
  • Before the structure is finally secured, it is necessary to evaluate it from afar.

About installing a cornice in a nursery in the following video:

Briefly about the main thing

Window textiles will harmoniously complement the design of the living room or bedroom if you take care that the installation of the cornice on the wall is carried out efficiently. In order for the chosen cornice to reliably perform its assigned functions, it is necessary to understand the features of different models.

The cornice device is selected based on a combination of characteristics. The main ones are the design of the model and the method of fastening the cornice, as well as the material of manufacture, which determines the strength characteristics.

The method of attaching a wall cornice is determined both by its design and the base material. In addition to wall-mounted ones, there are spacer and window options.

Before marking, determine the mounting parameters: distance from the ceiling, length of the cornice. All measurements are taken from the ceiling to level out its possible slope. Each type of cornice and type of wall has its own installation method that cannot be ignored.

Dimensions of suspended structures

Curtain rods are available in a wide range of sizes. Models you can choose:

  • covering a standard window opening;
  • occupying the entire wall;
  • for panoramic windows.

In kitchens and hallways, children's rooms and bedrooms, standard structures are often installed, the length of which is several centimeters greater than the width of the window opening. Single-row, double-row wall curtain rods of this type reliably protect from sunlight, are compact, and do not interfere with the arrangement of furniture.

The cornice is several centimeters larger than the width of the window

If it is necessary to make a visual adjustment, to give the room a solid, presentable look, the entire space of the wall on which the window is located is decorated with curtains. This technique visually expands the room and gives the interior grandeur. The design usually uses three-row, two-row metal curtain rods, which have high strength and reliability.

A cornice spanning the entire width of the wall visually expands the room

When decorating panoramic large-scale glazing, several systems can be used to ensure the required length, which can exceed six meters. A good option for this design are profile models made of plastic and metal. Structures must be equipped with sliding mechanisms to ensure convenient operation of large-scale structures.

Profile cornices are suitable for panoramic windows

Where is the corner option needed?

Corner suspension is especially appropriate in apartments with a non-standard layout. In this case, using traditional ceiling curtain rods may be inconvenient or simply impossible.

Products of this type are suitable if you are going to use for window decoration:

  • a classic set of curtains and translucent curtains;
  • a combination of curtains, curtains and decorative lambrequins;
  • "Roman" curtains for the living room;
  • any curtains or curtains with hinges;
  • muslin curtains.

Based on the material from which such products are made, they can be:

  • metal (stainless steel);
  • plastic (can be equipped with external decorative panels).

The corner pendant is also used for the bathroom, as it is not only an original decorative element, but also a multifunctional pendant. It is most rational to purchase metal ones, since plastic ones can become deformed over time.

Narrow openings

Single-leaf narrow options can be visually made larger. The ceiling structure for curtains should be 25 cm longer than the window parameters. Dense or multi-layered draperies on a wide rod will create the illusion of a large opening

When using models that replicate the size of a glass block, attention is focused on compactness

Optical design techniquesSource yandex.ua

If there are several narrow windows on one wall, then it is better to combine them into a single group. Instead of 2-3 short curtain rods, designers recommend using one long one. 10 cm is left on each side. An optical trick creates the illusion of a huge opening.

Kinds

Manufacturers offer various types of PVC plastic corners according to size and application.

  • Standard or U-profile. It is used to strengthen window and door slopes, and is recommended to be installed at the initial stage of installation of slopes. The purpose of this profile is to decorate and protect external corners from deformation. It also helps hide gaps between coatings that are not connected very tightly.
  • Versatile, or L-profile. It is used when installed on figured or arched openings. This profile is a flexible corner, the shelves of which converge at an angle of 90 degrees. Very convenient for installation, because when bent it retains the desired position for installation well.
  • F-shaped. It can be attached to the end sides of panels without much effort, even without glue, since it has a special jumper. Unlike other types, this profile can be easily removed when painting walls or wallpapering. The main purpose of this detail is to hide the gaps between the wall panels, as well as decorate the openings. In addition, it acts as a platband that frames the perimeter of a door or window.
  • T-profile. It is used if you need to achieve an ideal joint boundary between the slope and the panels. It flawlessly connects various finishing materials that have different types of textures, and is easily fixed on any surface. When laying tiles, it hides the unevenness of the tiles at connections with a flat subfloor.
  • Removable. This type of corner piece has a latch and has increased ductility. It can easily be bent by 3–6 mm. There is no need to remove them during repairs - you just need to tuck the wallpaper into the corners with a spatula. This allows assembly to be carried out much faster.

There is also a self-adhesive version of PVC corners on sale, which is versatile, since you do not need to buy glue separately for it. In addition, it has good flexibility, which makes installation extremely easy. For user convenience, they are often sold in rolls up to 50 meters long, and the piece can be purchased in any desired length to avoid joints.

According to the type of finishing processes, internal and external PVC corners are distinguished. In turn, the external angle can be 90 or 105 degrees. The 90-degree corner is mounted so that only one side of the edging is visible, and the 105-degree corner is mounted with both shelves up.

According to their structure, products are divided into a rigid structure and a soft, or flexible, folding profile. The rigid structure is a classic rectangular profile, both shelves of which are formed into one whole. Such products are used when decorating corners where you need to make a 90-degree bend.

To create the final image of the interior, white or colored decorative details are used that match the overall design of the room.

Curtain design for a corner window (or a window with a corner).

When looking at a corner window, the first question that arises is: On what cornice, and in what way should I hang the corner curtains? Therefore, first we will consider the existing types of corner cornices:

  • The tire
    is a profile rail cornice (see Fig. 6 - 8), made mainly of plastic. Rotating elements at 90 and 45 degrees allow you to create a cornice of almost any shape (see Fig. 7). In this case, the movement of the curtain along its entire length is carried out unhindered. There are one-, two- and three-row models. Can be mounted both on the ceiling and on the wall. The curtain is hung from such a curtain rod using curtain tape with loops and special runners with hooks or clips. You can read in detail about the design and methods of its installation in this material.

  • Cornice with a rod
    - a round cornice in the form of a rod (see Fig. 9, 10), is mainly mounted on the wall, but can also be mounted on the ceiling using ceiling brackets (see Fig. 11). To connect two straight rods, curtain rod manufacturers produce special rotating elements with an adjustable rotation angle, clamping (see Fig. 12, 13) and flexible (see Fig. 14). The curtain is hung from it in several ways, using: rings with hooks/clips, open rings (allowing unhindered movement along the entire length of the curtain rod, see Fig. 15 - 17), decorative magnets (see Fig. 18), decorative rings (see Fig. 19), clips (see Fig. 20), fabric loops, eyelets and other fasteners. More information about this type of curtain rod and how to hang a curtain from it can be found in this article.

  • A flexible cornice with an internal rail
    (see Fig. 21 - 23), is made mainly of aluminum, less often of plastic. It can be bent in two planes - bay window and arched, and mounted on the wall and ceiling. Single- and double-row models are produced. To create corner curtains, predominantly single-row curtains are used, since double-row curtains have a larger turning radius. If it is necessary to have two or more rows, the corresponding number of cornices are installed in parallel. Depending on the design of the model, control is carried out manually (by pulling the fabric directly with your hand), using a cord hanging from the side of the curtain, or remotely, using an electric drive installed in the cornice (see Fig. 23). For the latter option, integration into a “smart home” system is possible, with the curtain opening/closing depending on the time of day, lighting and/or indoor/outdoor temperature. The curtains are hung from it using plastic runners with hooks/clips.
Rice. 21, 22. Flexible cornice with internal rail Rice. 23. Corner cornice with electric drive
  • A flexible cornice with an external rail
    (see Fig. 24, 25) is made of plastic and has the greatest bending ability. It can be installed on a ceiling or wall, although the latter case requires a large number of brackets that form the required bend and prevent the cornice from sagging due to its great flexibility. Due to the fact that all its structural fastening elements are visible from the outside, they try to hide it in a ceiling niche or behind a baguette.
Rice. 24. PVC corner cornice Rice. 25. Flexible cornice with external rail

As can be seen from the above, there are quite a lot of different solutions for installing a curtain that allow you not to limit yourself in choosing the design of corner curtains, so the first thing it is recommended to start selecting curtains is to decide on their model. So these could be:

  • A combination or single version of sliding drapes and curtains. The top of such a curtain can, if desired, be supplemented with a lambrequin, throws, or hidden behind a decorative baguette strip (see Fig. 26 - 29). More photos and information, using the example of a straight window, can be viewed here.
  • Lifting Roman blinds. Installed on a special aluminum lifting cornice. Some models can be bent by a small amount, which is often practiced to create a bay window Roman curtain, but for the corner version (with an angle of 90 degrees) such a design is technically impossible. In this case, two straight curtains are installed end-to-end, one on each wall (see Fig. 30). This type of curtain is described in detail in this article.
  • Roller curtain (see Fig. 31). It can only have a straight shape, therefore it is installed on each side separately, mainly as additional sun-protection curtains. See this material for more details.
  • Curtains with eyelets or hinges. Not the most practical option for such a window, but nevertheless possible (see Fig. 34). More information here and here.
  • Thread muslin curtains. Used as a curtain or decorative curtain hung over curtains. During their manufacture, the threads are woven along the upper edge into a fabric fabric, thanks to which they can be attached to the cornice in many ways using: hooks, clips, eyelets, loops and other fasteners. Curtains with eyelets in the design of a modern home

In the process of creating an original and current design, window decoration is not the last place. If you follow the trends of new products for 2022, you can observe that curtains are equipped with eyelets in almost all rooms - but for each type there is a special approach. Depending on the function that the room performs, a suitable material, a harmonious type of eyelets, and the required size are selected.

Living room

To hang eyelet curtains in this room, you need to consider what kind of atmosphere you want to create in it. If it is a more business-like atmosphere, then it is better to choose plain curtains or a dim combination of two colors, and make the eyelets to match the fabric or furniture.

In the living room, you can combine eyelet curtains with Roman blinds - a practical novelty of recent years on our market. Moreover, they should be made in the same color scheme, but in different shades. As you know, Roman blinds are excellent protection from the sun, but at the same time the room does not “turn” into an office (as happens with blinds). Roman blinds will take on the function of shading, while curtains with eyelets can be light and airy - made of tulle. In this case, you will not overload the room by hanging thick curtains - which is especially good for small rooms. When fastening the tulle, the distance between the folds can be made thicker due to the lightweight structure of the fabric.

Bedroom

Here, curtains with such fastenings are perfect - after all, this room should be a place of complete relaxation. You can hang thick matting curtains on the eyelets, which will block the penetration of light.

Since the bedroom, first of all, should be cozy, then in its design you can give preference to the classics - in this case, you can choose eyelets for curtains made of dark wood that will harmonize with the color of the headboard. But don’t think that only classics can be cozy. Interior designs in ethnic style - Japanese, African - were very popular in 2022. In this case, you can hang photo curtains with a panoramic view or with a traditional ornament.

Photo of an example of decorating a window with eyelets in a bedroom

Kitchen

If in other rooms when choosing curtains, only the design and model are of paramount importance, then here the issue of functionality is also added - the distance between the curtain and kitchen appliances.

Before hanging curtains in the kitchen, you need to choose the material and color wisely. Regarding the material, give preference to natural or mixed fabrics that will be easy to wash. As for color, when deciding this issue, take into account the size of the room and its illumination. Curtains with eyelets for a small kitchen located on the north side can be hung light, light, made of tulle with a small pattern or without it at all. Also in this case, you can give preference to short curtains.

Photo of an example of short curtains for kitchen decoration

If conditions allow, then curtains with metal eyelets for the kitchen can be made long, with a large pattern. Only in this case you need to take into account the distance to the kitchen stove - after all, a gust of wind can blow such curtains towards the lit burners. At the same time, you can protect yourself from the bright sun by hanging Roman blinds in the kitchen.

If you are planning a kitchen design in a country style, then you can make curtains yourself - they will create exactly that unique atmosphere of a country house. One of the best solutions would be to use matting in such an interior. The matting is perfect for an interior whose goal is environmental friendliness and simplicity.

Children's

In a child's room, eyelets will help solve several problems at once. First of all, this is the bright design of the nursery. You can hang photo curtains with images of your favorite cartoon characters or panoramas of wildlife if your child is interested in animals. In general, in this way you can make any wish of the little owner come true

Another important task that eyelets can handle is safety in the nursery. A child can accidentally pull the curtain, but will not tear it or tear it off the curtain rod thanks to the durable metal fasteners

For convenience, you can make short curtains with your own hands.

On the Internet you can find many photo examples of interiors for children.

Types of curtains

Almost all types of curtains are suitable for decorating window openings located in the corner of the room:

  • classic multi-layer drapes and curtains with eyelets or hinges;
  • models with hard and soft lambrequin;
  • lush French and stationary Italian styles;
  • short Austrian and original light asymmetrical curtains;
  • Roman and roller blinds.

Recently, it has become fashionable to combine compact blinds and textile curtains or tulle on windows. Such compositions are very functional and practical, they help to reliably protect the space from light and at the same time decorate the opening and support the style of the interior, making it more cozy and comfortable.

Asymmetrical light curtains coupled with thick blinds are an aesthetic, functional and compact solution that is ideal for decorating windows in small spaces

General recommendations

Curtains for angled windows should delicately emphasize the unusual openings and at the same time create the effect of unity of the ensemble. To decorate openings in the living room, it is better to choose beautiful, rich fabrics in combination with organza or tulle. If the design of the hall is made in a modern or minimalist style, then in such interiors, modern types of curtains would be appropriate for the corner windows, for example, Japanese screens or roller models combined with simple, light curtains.

Classic multi-layer curtains on corner windows look luxurious and elegant, but are appropriate only in large rooms, for example, in the living room or bedroom; in the kitchen it is better to abandon this idea

In the bedroom it is important to take into account functionality; in these rooms it is necessary to be able to create twilight even on a sunny day. Modern blinds in combination with light curtains with eyelets or classic curtains with tulle, as well as curtains made of fabric with a blackout function, are relevant here.

When choosing corner curtains for the kitchen, you need to take into account the specifics and size of the room. When designing kitchen window openings, you should be guided not only by aesthetics, but also by practicality. Here it is recommended to choose fabrics that are easy to wash and clean, do not fade or deform when washed. Curtains should be easy to remove from the curtain rods. And given that kitchens generally do not have a large area, it is recommended to abandon bulky and multi-layered styles in favor of compact ensembles.

Composition

There are several basic compositions for decorating corner windows:

  • A single ensemble, which consists of the main fabric and side curtains. Here, the windows and the walls between them are most often decorated with a solid translucent curtain, and thick curtains are hung along the edges, which beautifully emphasize the unusual shape of the opening. In the bedroom you cannot do without additional thick curtains, but in the living room you can safely abandon this detail by covering the windows only with translucent tulle. If two windows are located end to end, in modern interiors and small rooms curtains are often replaced with roller blinds and Roman blinds, as well as blinds of various types.

It is better to decorate a small bedroom space with corner curtains in pastel colors, so the interior will not seem overloaded and heavy

  • The whole ensemble is relevant for the design of complex corner windows, for example, bay windows. In this case, each opening is curtained with tulle or blinds, and each junction is decorated with a separate curtain. The composition is combined with a complex lambrequin or draperies. The same technique is used for two corner windows if it is necessary to correct the proportions of the opening and the room as a whole, for example, to emphasize the junction in order to visually reduce the width of the opening, or to hide an awkward partition.

Intermediate canvases break the opening into segments, making the room seem higher

  • Separate corner curtains are only appropriate for decorating large window openings or if there is a wide partition between them. Here it is important to choose the right curtain rods; the curtains must be identical. Nowadays it is popular to decorate corner windows with asymmetrical curtains; this design is relevant if you want to combine space; it helps to straighten the proportions of the room if the windows are of different sizes. Usually, long curtains are hung on the sides of the opening, and the addition is asymmetrical lambrequins, swags, ties, as in the photo below.

It is recommended to decorate corner windows in small rooms with curtains of a laconic cut

Stylistics and features of the room

This is probably the most interesting part: choosing a model that will decorate the room, harmoniously complement it and not look out of place. Of course, there are no inviolable dogmas here, and there will be exceptions to every rule, but I advise you to take into account some of the designers’ recommendations.

In apartments with high ceilings, it is better to use wall cornices that balance the space. But in rooms with low ceilings, hidden options will look more advantageous.

  • Simple string models and a hidden profile are appropriate for such trends as minimalism and hi-tech. White and silver will look good here.
  • Hidden fastenings are suitable for any design, since they are not visible and the emphasis is transferred only to the textiles.
  • Carved wood and forged metal products are used for classical and modern designs. The shade should also be luxurious: copper, gold, silver. In this case, the wood is coated with varnish, emphasizing the beauty of the solid wood.
  • For country and Provence, there is no better choice than a laconic wooden pipe.
  • Modern styles can complement baguettes with leather trim, white and black samples.
  • There is a special type of curtain rods in the shape of branches that are now fashionable. Very beautiful and impressive.

What can we know?

Decoration of bay windows

Ceiling cornices and curtains are indispensable attributes of any living space. For ordinary windows, choosing them is not difficult, but buying them for decorating bay windows is problematic - not all stores have them in stock, and the price is much higher than ordinary ones.

In order not to make a bad choice, you need to clearly know what you are buying and how suitable it is for you. Let's look at the main classifications of cornices, of which you will definitely like something.

Material

Hidden under a baguette

Several types made from different materials:

  • Plastic ones are the most common. They are easy to install and available to buyers with any budget. The flexibility of plastic makes it possible to produce cornices of any shade and modification. The disadvantages include a short service life and limited choice of fabric for curtains. Plastic fasteners that are too heavy will not hold up and over time the structure itself and the hooks may break.

Round, plastic

  • Aluminum ones are also no less popular than plastic ones. They are very light, but more durable. However, it is not much more durable than plastic models. Basically, they have a tubular shape, and you also need to purchase curtain rings along with them.

Metal

  • Reinforced plastic . There are also hybrid curtains made of a plastic body and reinforced with an aluminum profile.

Combination of plastic with aluminum profile

  • Stainless steel has become an indispensable material for rooms with high humidity, such as balconies, terraces, bathrooms, baths and saunas. But, it can also be used in the living room, as it looks quite solid and has a long service life.

Stainless steel

  • Polished steel has become a refined material for the elite class. In modern designs you can find not just cornices, but real works of art. In addition, they are strong, durable and can withstand even the heaviest tapestry curtains.

Steel, various modifications

I would like to note that the cornice can be effectively disguised under a special baguette, which can be made from absolutely any material - plasterboard with wall finishing, wood with gilding, plastic with different textures and colors. So, you don’t have to worry about a not-so-successful purchase of products that looked better in the store than in the interior.

Differences by type

It seems that all ceiling cornices are almost the same.
But it is not so. They are also classified by type of construction:

  • The rod has a round profile and is attached to the ceiling, wall, or a combination. Such rods are usually made of metal. Installation takes place on special brackets. Curtains can be hung on rings, magnetic or metal eyelets (see How to hang curtains on a ceiling cornice).

Barbell

  • Bus - a similar profile type of construction is a flat cornice for ceiling mounting. Available with one, two or three rails. Usually made of plastic. Thanks to its lightness, processing and the presence of various rotating elements, it can be hung on any corner glazing. There is nothing to impede the passage of hooks on the rails, but very heavy curtains can weaken them.

Three rail tire

  • Flexible, with internal rails, they are made of both plastic and aluminum. Their special feature is the single-row curtain fastening system, which does not interfere with bending them under any bay window. For multi-row curtains, hang several pieces.

Flexible

  • The flexible external type rail is made exclusively from dense and durable materials that can follow any bends. Mounted on special metal brackets. The hooks can also be made of metal, although the body itself is made of high-quality plastic. Usually they are disguised as a suspended ceiling or baguette.

They can be divided into several types according to shape. For example, cornices are most often used to decorate bay windows, as in the photo below.

Corner

You also cannot do without them with continuous glazing of the room.

For the corner of the room

For an elegant design of curtains, a round profile is most suitable. It visually rounds the room and smooths out the corners. They are often hung not only on bay windows, but also on balconies and loggias.

Round

Purpose

A round ceiling cornice, like a corner cornice, can rightfully be considered a universal decorative element.

It can be used to solve several problems:

  • Window decoration is the direct purpose for which any cornices were originally created.

Chic bay window in the bathroom

  • Zoning space with textiles has become an integral design solution in small rooms. At the same time, with the help of a flexible system you can create the most bizarre shapes.

Textile zoning

  • Enclosing the shower area using curtain rods is also not new. They can be either partial or made over the entire diameter of the shower area.

Round

Stainless steel is recommended, although plastic products are also great for areas with high humidity.

Curtains for a corner window: elegant solutions to a complex problem (26 photos)

The corner window is one of those architectural solutions that cause a lot of difficulties when developing interior design. However, the design of such window openings is a solvable task, and the achieved result may well be elegant, stylish, and effective. This is confirmed by a selection of photographs with examples of the decor of various corner windows - single, located on two adjacent walls and bay windows.

No need to be afraid of difficulties! A corner window is a challenge, but a professional answer will allow you to create a truly extraordinary, and maybe even truly unique, interior.

One-piece curtain for a corner window

As a rule, corner windows are larger in size than standard straight ones and add a special sophistication to the room. Therefore, it is customary not to hide such windows, but to make them an effective detail of the overall interior, the main decoration of the room. To emphasize the elegance of corner windows, curtains are chosen long, to the floor, from soft, flowing fabrics. The richer the window decor, the more impressive the selected corner will look.

The most common technique is a one-piece curtain covering the entire window. Translucent fabrics in light colors are ideal for the main curtain. Firstly, they do not clutter up the space (considering that the area of corner windows is usually large). Secondly, such a transparent and weightless base allows you to play with the color and texture of additional elements.

As additional decorations, symmetrical lambrequins, swags, ties, drapery look great - in general, everything that will allow you to decorate the upper part of the window. The fabric for additional elements is selected to match the overall palette of the interior - to match the furniture or other textiles in the room. Thick curtains allow you to highlight a corner window - they create something like a visual “frame”, as a result the entire window seems like a single whole.

Options for placing curtains:

  • Curtains can be placed only on the sides, decorating them with beautiful tiebacks.
  • If the top part of the curtains is decorated to a minimum, then you can place separate curtain panels on the sides and in the corner. Such a curtain seems to be a single composition, and in addition, it allows you to emphasize the broken line of the window.
  • The lighting installed along the cornice line will add originality to the window frame. This technique will not only highlight this part of the room, but will also create an original effect of a play of colors and light.

Curtain rods: determining the parameters

What should non-professionals follow when choosing the type of cornice and curtains? There are several basic criteria.

Cornice length

To prevent open curtains from blocking the window, choose curtain rods that are larger than the window opening. The amount of extension depends on the width of the curtains and the window:

  • For windows with a width of 90-150 cm, the general recommended extension is 30, 50 and 70 cm (small, medium, large). Accordingly, on each side the cornice will protrude 15, 25 and 35 cm from the window opening. This value depends on the density of the fabric, the design of the curtains, and the characteristics of the room.
  • For openings from 150 to 200 cm - 50, 70 and 90 cm.
  • From 200 to 250 – 70, 90 and 110 cm.
  • 250–300 cm – 90, 110 and 130 cm.

How to choose a cornice for wide curtains? It should be remembered that wide, weighted curtains, when assembled, take up more space than narrow ones. For curtains with eyelets and pencil pleats, you can choose a small elongation of the cornice. For curtains with glass-shaped pleats, in French and European styles - on medium. For fabrics with bow pleats or drawstrings, use the large one.

The amount of indentation of the cornice from the wall

In order for the curtains to look beautiful and not touch the window sill or radiators, you need to take this parameter into account. It is calculated as follows:

  • Measure the distance from the wall to the most protruding point (window sill or radiator).
  • Add 5-7 cm to the resulting value. This is the interval between the wall and the cornice guide closest to it.
  • The next guide is placed after another 5-7 cm.

Curtains with grommets are hung at a distance of 10-15 cm from the most protruding part and the adjacent row of curtains.

Cornice mounting height

Traditionally, wall cornices are mounted 10-15 cm above the window opening. If the structure is installed lower, this will have an unfavorable effect on the visual perception of the window: it will be visually smaller.

Also, the choice of accessory depends on the style of the interior, curtains, and fabric density:

  • For heavy curtains, use durable rod curtain rods made of metal or wood. Plastic ones may bend.
  • Lightweight sheer curtains look good with string and thin metal systems.
  • Japanese curtains are a set of long rectangular panels on a rigid frame, which are conveniently placed on multi-row rail structures with an electric drive.
  • Curtains with lambrequins are hung on three-row systems.
  • You can visually increase the height of the ceiling using ceiling cornices. In this case, it is better to refuse lambrequins.
  • A cornice and wall-length curtains will help visually expand the space.
  • In small rooms, light translucent curtains on string, rail, or thin round cornices look good.
  • To visually increase the width of the window, designers recommend using a cornice that is 1 m wider.
  • Durable metal and wooden curtain rods are more suitable for velvet curtains. If the interior is decorated in the Empire, Baroque, Rococo style, a combination of curtains with a forged or carved cornice is desirable.
  • Short cafe curtains look good when combined with a wooden plank.

Which curtains are suitable for corner ceiling systems

Heavy curtains combined with light tulle

And the last criterion that influences the choice of curtain rods is curtains. A variety of types and designs of hailstones are suitable for one type or another.

Classic curtains

Regular curtains can be hung on any type of ceiling cornice. But you need to consider the quality of the fabric itself. For example, it is best to hang heavy curtains on metal hailstones, but any flow of tulle will withstand plastic.

Lightweight chintz curtains

Rolled products of any modification are hung on a special curtain rod with a curtain movement mechanism. It is made mainly of plastic and comes complete with curtains.

Roller blinds

Roman blinds are supposed to be hung on aluminum structures. It is important, during installation, to very accurately align the position of the cornices in relation to each other in order to obtain the most accurate window design.

Thread curtains are most often used to zone a space or to complement regular curtains. It is preferable to hang them on rail curtains, although they can be used with curtain rods. In the latter case, a special ribbon for rings is sewn on.

Kiss curtains

“Bishop's sleeve” looks most impressive on rail hidden curtains. Although, armed with a wild imagination, you can create a unique design for dumbbell-type curtain rods.

Chic curtains

All types of curtains with loops or grommets can be attached to curtain rods. Again, do not forget about the weight of the curtains. Also think about how best to open the curtains. And it is advisable to purchase hinges with rubberized inserts so that when moving the curtains they are silent.

Shower curtains can be hung on any curtain rods. The main thing is that when moving they do not get stuck and do not break off at the most interesting moment.

Installation of ceiling and wall baguette curtain rods

In order to assemble and attach a baguette for curtains to the ceiling, you need to have a special set of tools on hand. To work you will need:

  • hammer drill or screwdriver;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • dowels;
  • building level;
  • a simple pencil;
  • roulette.

During the installation process, you should observe certain parameters:

  • the location of the decorative element should be symmetrical in the center of the window opening;
  • the edges of the baguette should extend beyond the window opening by about 15-30 cm;
  • the distance between the protruding part and the window sill in the horizontal plane should vary within 2-5 cm.

Since the width of the window sill can be different, during installation work on installing a wall molding, it is recommended to take into account the distance by which the brackets will move the canvas forward. The ceiling decorative element requires the correct location from the wall.

To take measurements, it is recommended to take a thread with a small weight attached to the end, for example, a nut. In the place where you plan to secure the baguette in the future, you should attach the thread and lower the load down. If the distance between the thread and the protruding edge of the window sill is from 2 to 5 cm, then the attachment location has been chosen correctly. If the thread touches the edge of the window sill, then it is worth increasing the indentation step.

The wall molding is installed according to the following algorithm:

  1. 2 to 3 holes are drilled in the wall using a hammer drill. A dowel is inserted into each hole made in the wall.
  2. Using self-tapping screws, it is necessary to install the brackets and secure them securely.
  3. The next step is to install the rods with baguette. If there are rings on the bar, they must be put on first.
  4. When the baguette includes decorative fleurons, their installation is done last.

Installation of the ceiling molding is carried out according to the following algorithm:

  1. Using a hammer drill, several holes are made in the wall to install a decorative element.
  2. Dowels are installed in the holes.
  3. The baguette strip is fixed using self-tapping screws.
  4. After this, the curtains are hung.

It is important to take into account the fact that the number of holes depends entirely on the selected model. For example, if your plans include hanging fairly heavy curtains in the room, then you should make additional holes in the baguette for fastening

Otherwise, the reliability of the design will be questionable, and during operation there is a possibility that the curtain baguette will fall.

Advice! When carrying out installation work on attaching a baguette for curtains, it is necessary to take into account the weight of the curtain. This is due to the fact that the decorative structure will be subject to load every day, as a result of which it is worth choosing reinforced fasteners.
