Door opening limiter - types, design, which one to choose

Application cases

Door stoppers are small and inexpensive, but very useful accessories. They are used in everyday life, public institutions and industrial premises. Main advantages and reasons for using a retainer:

  • ensures safe swinging of the sash, which prevents the doors, furniture and walls themselves from accidental damage;
  • fixes the door in a given position in rooms with high traffic or, if necessary, to carry large objects;
  • prevents sudden closing of the sash and its possible damage from a gust of wind or draft;
  • allows pets to move freely throughout the entire area of the apartment or house;
  • allows you to leave children unattended in the room for some time.

Manufacturing materials

The material used to make it is of great importance as a stopper. Fasteners can be:

  • Silicone;
  • Aluminum and steel;
  • Plastic;
  • Rubber.

When purchasing a stopper, it is very important to pay attention to its quality and the strength of the material, because, as practice shows, the stronger the raw materials used, the more reliable the product will be. In addition, such a product will serve for a long time. This statement does not apply only to retainers made of soft materials.

If the door leaf installed in the room is made of wood, then it is recommended to install magnetic floor stops made of steel or aluminum for doors. They are additionally equipped with rubber inserts. If the stopper needs to be installed on the wall, then silicone clamps will be very useful here, because they have a soft texture and will not damage the canvas.

Open position clamps, opening angle limiters

Magnetic door lock
A wide category of locks, both in appearance and in the method of fastening and principle of operation. It is useful to have them at home, since situations periodically arise when you need to temporarily lock the door in the open position to carry things in or ventilate. In public spaces with active traffic, such accessories are indispensable.

Another type of magnetic latches

Floor (wall) clamps

Common and easy-to-install types of limiter. They are characterized by ease of installation and use, low cost and long-term reliability. Such devices can be either stationary or portable:

  • Mobile. They are placed on the lower part of the sash, open in the desired position, or simply placed under it. They act as a wedge and serve to fix the door in the desired position. The variety of shapes and colors allows you to turn this simple device into an original and stylish interior detail.

  • Stationary. They are attached to the floor or wall and prevent the door from opening completely. Made from metal alloys: stainless steel, copper, brass.

  • Magnetic (auto-stop). They are a variant of a stationary stop, supplemented by a magnetic plate, which is attached to the door leaf at the same level as the floor fixed part. When the two parts come into contact, the sash is securely fixed in a stable position. A similar magnetic limiter can be attached not only to the floor, but also to the wall.

Installation details

You can install limiting devices yourself, since manufacturers equip the fittings with the necessary mounting holes.

The following tips will help you properly attach the fasteners:

  • do not install the mechanism at the level of the door hinges;
  • choose a place closer to the end of the canvas. This way the doors will last longer and will not be damaged by impacts;
  • pay attention to the size of the handle. The latch should not allow the wall to come into contact with the handle.

Installation of floor limiters is carried out according to the following recommendations:

  • wide passage. Do not install the clamp in the path of people;
  • Maintain maximum proximity to the end when installing the clamp. This will preserve the integrity of the door leaf longer;
  • Consider the dimensions of the handle. Failure to comply with the dimensions will result in damage to the wall.

Attaching the limiting devices is not difficult. Installation of clamps occurs according to the following plan:

  • Selecting the location of the fastener and making marks with a pencil at the designated points.
  • Drilling holes for dowels in the marking areas.
  • Fixing the device on the wall or floor using self-tapping screws.

Closed position latches

These types of stops are installed to fix the sash in the closed position and are used for interior and balcony doors in residential premises, entrance doors in public places and shops. There are several types of structures, each of which has its own characteristics and advantages.

Ball (roller)

They are mounted on the end of the door leaf; when closing, the ball-tongue with a spring enters the hole in the strike plate, fixed to the door frame at the same level, and securely fixes the door in the closed position.
A fairly reliable and time-tested mechanism that can withstand many opening and closing cycles. The principle of operation and design of the roller stops are similar to the ball mechanism, but the shape of the tongue is more elongated. Ball (roller) latches are not associated with the door handle - to open the door you just need to press the door leaf. Such mechanisms are convenient for equipping doors that need to be closed most of the time, but easy to open when necessary.

Installing such a latch does not require dismantling the door handle and locking device - this is an additional device that is usually located a little higher or lower. It is necessary to observe the relative correspondence of the levels of the tongue and the hole on the strike plate horizontally.

False

They have a beveled tongue, which also, when closing, fits into the corresponding slot in the metal strike plate installed on the door frame.
To open the door, you need to turn the door handle - the latches, unlike ball latches, are associated with it. This type of latches is more reliable than ball (roller) latches - such a door will not be opened by a strong gust of wind or a small child. When installing a halyard lock on a balcony door, it is recommended to provide a double-sided rotary handle, otherwise it will be impossible to open such a door from the balcony side.

Why are locking mechanisms needed?

Door clamps, or limiters as they are also called, make it possible to ensure that doors do not open beyond a certain position and are fixed at one point. As a rule, the mechanism allows you to secure two positions - fully open, or slightly open.

When the door is locked, there is no way to open it from the outside, and the lock is not used, that is, the door formally remains open. Another advantage of the latch is that you can set a certain angle of door opening. This prevents it from hitting the wall.

Thus, limiters can be divided depending on the functions they perform:

  • Mechanisms used to stop the door, preventing them from opening completely (stoppers);
  • Devices that prevent doors from closing (floor holders). Such latches are suitable for doors when it is necessary to limit closing from children;
  • Devices that perform the functions of a door lock (latches);
  • Universal mechanisms that perform both a restrictive and a retaining role (magnetic lock for an entrance or interior door).

Which manufacturer should you prefer?

Door hardware manufacturing companies, in a constant race for customers, are trying to improve their offers, product quality and professionalism. Here are some of the leading companies:

  1. USK (Germany) produces practical models of stoppers that are completely compatible in color with other accessories of the company. 4. Dorma (Germany) is a world-famous company with numerous representative offices. The quality of products has been tested not only by time, but also by millions of buyers and manufacturers. They produce a wide range of different door fittings.

Installation

The floor door opening limiter is installed in several stages. So, at the first stage, the necessary tools are prepared. This is a hammer drill, drill, screwdriver and marker or pencil. When purchasing a product, it is important that it is equipped with special fasteners.

At the second stage, you need to select a suitable location. The main thing here is to choose exactly the right place. To do this, open the door leaf and then fix it in such a position that about 5 cm remains from the door to the wall. At the same time, make sure that the distance from the door to the wall is no less than the length of the door handle, otherwise the stop will not work. If the product will be installed in a walk-through room, then it should be mounted as close to the wall as possible.

Next is the marking stage. At this stage, mark the place where the device will be placed. Then two holes are drilled in the floor - one for the dowel, the second for the pin. A dowel is hammered into one of the holes and the products are installed in this place. It is important that the pin also fits into the second hole. Then you can fix the element.

Limiters are very useful and practical products. They protect walls and furniture without worrying about children's fingers or pets.
