Cornice for a bay window: types, options for mounting locations, materials, choice depending on the shape

Home / Components and accessories / Features of flexible curtain rods for bay windows

If your home has a bay window, decorating it with curtains can be a challenge due to the shape of this part of the room. You will need to either install several straight cornices arranged in a broken line, or mount a flexible cornice, which is the best solution for a bay window.

Cornices for bay windows

Most often in apartments and country houses there is a bay window in the shape of a “trapezoid” with two corners. The most convenient to use, but laconic in appearance, cornice for such bay windows is made of aluminum profile. It can be white or painted in other colors; due to its design, it is possible to install either a single-row cornice or two, three or more rows. In addition to the convenience of hanging, its advantage is the easy sliding of runners in the corners and various types of mounting: wall (using durable metal brackets of different sizes) or ceiling. When installed in a traditional white ceiling, a white bay window cornice will be almost invisible. And all the nuances of the interior will allow you to take into account the diversity of the line of profile cornices.

How to install

The most important thing in the installation process is marking. The appearance of the entire structure will depend on the accuracy of applying all marking points and lines, therefore, maximum attention must be paid to this process. If the fixation is carried out on the wall, then the markings should be checked for horizontalness.

The option for placement on the ceiling has another, no less important aspect - the distance from the plane of the wall. It must necessarily exceed the width of the window sill. Otherwise, after hanging the curtain, it will touch it. Ideally, the distance should be 5 to 10 centimeters greater than the width of the window sill, and the line of the brackets should follow the line of the wall, if, according to the designer’s idea, the curtain should not be in a different plane.

After drawing the marking lines, holes are drilled on the wall or ceiling for mounting brackets. The distance between the points is about 40 centimeters. It is better to choose a ceiling option for placing curtains, as it will give the effect of visually increasing the height of the room.

Next, brackets are mounted, to which a plastic polymer guide is attached. Its bend and length can be adjusted during installation. After cutting off the excess length of the guide, movable fasteners for hooks - runners - are put on it. After this, all that remains is to put the plugs on the ends of the curtains and you can hang the curtains.

Tip: removing and hanging curtains will become much more convenient if you use special hooks that are firmly fixed to the curtain and then snapped onto the rail.

Profile cornices for bay windows

The most versatile of the aluminum curtain rods for bay windows is the ST 41 profile, white, 25 mm high, easy to install, designed for different weight loads from light tulle to thick heavy curtains. Over the 15 years of working with this profile, we have heard only good reviews from clients about its reliability.

For high ceiling heights or curtains that are difficult to move, it is better to use profile cornices for the bay window of the KS and DS series. Thanks to a fundamentally new system of movement of the runners along the profile, ideal sliding and passage through corner bends is ensured. The DS profile is more decorative and can be produced in matte silver.

The advantages of this solution

In addition to greater aesthetics when installed on uneven or curved walls, such structures have other positive qualities:

  • Flexible cornice for a bay window can be either ceiling or wall mounted
  • The structure does not require special care and dust does not accumulate on it
  • Curtains slide along the entire length of the slats without any difficulty
  • A curtain of this type can be disguised with a lambrequin, for which special fastenings are provided in some models
  • Installation is easy and takes minimal time
  • The design is universal and allows it to be dismantled and reinstalled many times without loss of performance.
  • Plastic polymer guides are not susceptible to moisture and are suitable for installation in important rooms, such as the bathroom
  • Despite the versatility of the solution, its cost is very low
  • The device takes up virtually no space, especially when placed on the ceiling
  • The total length of the guide without extensions can be more than ten meters
  • When bent, the polymer parts do not break, which will allow you to bend the curtain fastening line even by 90 degrees

With such a list of advantages, such solutions do not have significant disadvantages. They are slightly more expensive than standard curtain rods, but only the cheapest models. All other options will either be equal in cost or exceed their price.

Bay window curtain rod with lambrequin

You can also hide a profile cornice behind a decorative lambrequin, sewn to order in our studio. In this case, a special outer row of a profile bay window cornice is installed with Velcro tape pressed into it. The corresponding “soft” part of the Velcro is sewn to the lambrequin.

This creates the illusion of a complete absence of cornice - as if the curtains are floating in the air. For those who love classic reality, we recommend additionally using a wooden molding.

Ideas in the interior of rooms

A bay window cornice can become an accent part of the interior of a room, or complement it.

Kitchen

Apartments with a bay window of the P44T, P44M, etc. series are characterized by a kitchen with a protrusion in the facade. This area is used as a dining, working or relaxation area. For the kitchen, you can choose classic curtains with a tubular cornice or short Roman blinds that follow the curve of the ledge.

Bedroom

For a bedroom with a bay window, you should choose light-proof curtains on a durable cornice. They must be combined with the overall interior. If there is furniture nearby, long canvases will not work.

Living room

For the living room, tulle and thick curtains with a double-row profile fastening are suitable. The color must be combined with wallpaper and furniture.

Cornices for arched bay window

Less common, but no less impressive, is the “arc” bay window. Due to its shape, the choice of curtain rods for it is much smaller. The most convenient, as for other types of bay windows, are aluminum profile cornices. Certain models of round rods can also be made with a bend. In some cases, our designers combine rods and fittings from different manufacturers to complete the intended design project. However, the more complex and larger the shape of the bay window, the more wall fasteners will be used in the cornice, which greatly limits its functionality.

When the cornice you choose cannot be a bay window

If the cornice you like cannot be made into a bay window, we install several separate products. Despite the functional limitations, even in this case there is a feeling of integrity of the cornice. It is also possible to decorate windows with cornices in different planes.

When it is impossible to install a bay window cornice

In some cases, it is simply not possible to manufacture bay window cornices:

  • did not calculate the dimensions of the ceiling niche for the cornices,
  • they didn’t think through the embedded parts in the suspended ceiling, and it’s impossible to attach the brackets to the wall,
  • the distance between the ceiling and the window opening is less than 1 cm,
  • or the options for cornices for the bay window are not suitable in principle.

In such cases, we recommend mechanisms that can be attached directly to the windows, opening the sash along with them. These are all kinds of mini-roller blinds, mini-cassette systems, pleated, horizontal blinds “isolight” and “isotra” and miniature curtain rods “cafe” for mounting directly on the frame. In almost all cases, measuring these products is quite complex and painstaking, and requires calling a specialist.

Bay window shapes

There are several forms of bay windows:

  • Triangular (for 2 windows). Usually located in the corner part and consists of two windows. It is possible to install a continuous or separate cornice.

  • Rectangular or trapezoidal (for 3 windows). One window is located in the center and two on the sides.

  • Round. The bay window has a soft turn. Characteristic of the classic style.

  • Polygonal (4 windows or more). Consists of several windows and has more than two corners. Creates additional space in the room. Sometimes it is equipped as a separate part of the house.

String cornice

This type of design consists of a string and compact brackets similar to staples. The string itself resembles a guitar string. Its length can be up to five meters, and to create a multi-row composition requires the attachment of two or three cornices. Curtains are hung with hooks, rings, grommets or clips. The obvious advantage of a string cornice is its low cost.

The use of a design of this kind is limited by the following factors.

  • You cannot hang heavy curtains.
  • The design is too simple, although not without elegance. The string is suitable for high-tech style or an interior designed according to the principles of minimalism.
  • The metal string may rust or sag. Over time, it will have to be tightened periodically.
  • The curtain fabric moves only in a straight line to the turning point.

In general, a string cornice is best used for a bay window of simple shapes with pronounced angles.

Round curtain rod

Such designs can be single-row or double-row. This type of ceiling cornice consists of sections of round pipe connected to each other by special hinges. Thanks to such connections, you can adjust the angle of rotation of the rod using a clamping bolt. The curtains are fastened using rings, eyelets or decorative loops.

Advantages of round cornices:

  • decorative appearance;
  • no need to hide it in a ceiling niche;
  • You can hang tulle and curtains on one cornice.

The disadvantages are the following:

  • To freely move the curtain along its entire length, special rings with a connector are required.
  • Only a broken line is created.

Such a cornice can be used for those bay windows where, according to the design concept, it is not necessary to extend the curtains all the way to the edge of the wall opening.

Tire cornice

The ceiling rail cornice is made of rigid material. But, unlike other designs, it can be used to create smooth turning lines. This is achieved thanks to rotating connecting elements, which can have different angles and lengths. Standard parts are produced with an angle of 45 and 90 degrees. By connecting two elements, an angle of 135 degrees is obtained. Many modern designs are produced with notches along the inner radius, which allows the element to be trimmed to add a bending angle in increments of two and a half degrees.

Advantages of this design:

  • You can hang one, two or three rows of curtains on one strip.
  • The cornice can be decorated with a baguette, attaching it to the outer surface of the tire.
  • The reliable and lightweight design ensures good sliding of the runners.

To bend the bar, connecting rotating elements are required, so the design is not suitable for highly curved lines. The ceiling rail cornice looks best on rectangular or corner bay windows.
