How to hang curtains - choosing a curtain rod, types of fastenings and the best design options for curtains (101 photos)

Selecting a cornice

There are different types of cornices:

Barbell

A classic version, made from a variety of materials: plastic, wood, metal. Curtains are attached to it using rings, eyelets, hooks, clips, and loops made of similar fabric.

Tiebacks will look good. But there is no need to cover the bar with drapery and lambrequins, since unnecessary accessories will only make the structure bulkier.

Optimal distance

By choosing the right profile, you can effectively play with the space. To calculate the length of the cornice, measure:

  • distance from ceiling to window;
  • distance from the wall to the curtains;
  • distance from ceiling to floor;
  • the distance from one side of the window to the other.

The length of the fabric may vary from room to room. For a children's room or kitchen, choose curtains up to the length of the window sill or radiator. Curtains to the floor are hung in the bedroom. In the kitchen, you can attach curtains only to the lower or upper part of the window.

When installing the crossbar yourself, take into account the shape of the window, the height, and even how difficult it will be to subsequently remove the curtains from the hooks or loops. A baguette profile in a classic style looks appropriate. A large window will need more than two brackets. Choose a cornice so that it protrudes 20 cm beyond the edges of the window.

The stretch ceiling hides the profile, and this creates the appearance that the curtains are hanging directly from the ceiling. It looks impressive, but the same look can be achieved with a ceiling cornice. Curtains along the length of the wall visually enlarge the room. For small apartments this is the best solution.

String

For attachment to it, clips, hooks, and holders are used. Suitable for thin, airy fabrics, tulle, veil, organza. A heavier fabric will pull the string cornice down, which will look unsightly.

Almost invisible, it focuses attention on the beauty of the fabric and the texture of the curtains themselves. Does not need to be covered with a lambrequin. Suitable for use in rooms in a minimalist, high-tech style.

Color solutions

The color of the metal curtain rod is selected:

  1. Match the shade of the wall covering. The bar can match in color or act as a contrasting accent.
  2. For ceiling decoration. A bar in the color of the ceiling allows you to visually increase the height of the room.
  3. Depending on the types of curtains. Curtains and cornices should create a single stylistic ensemble.
  4. Under furniture or lighting fixtures. Forged elements that replicate the decor of a chandelier or the shape of furniture handles look interesting.

The metal bar looks great in its “natural” form. The noble shine and specific texture do not require painting.

Baguette

The curtains are simply hung under it, which makes the process the easiest and does not require drapery. The use of grabs is acceptable. Thick curtains, thin organza, muslin, and mesh look equally great on it. Suitable for rooms in rustic, English, classic styles.

Products made of metal

Due to the fact that metal curtain clips are made of fairly durable and wear-resistant material, they have a fairly long service life. These clips are very difficult to break or deform, so handling them does not require any delicacy. They will securely and firmly fix the fabric and will not allow it to jump out. From an aesthetic point of view, choosing such elements will be easy, since any interior uses one or another type of metal. In this case, it is better to choose material of the same color to ensure a harmonious appearance.

The disadvantages of such decorative curtain clips are that during use they can leave unattractive marks on the fabric. And if when using them directly to attach fabric to the cornice, this is not particularly important, since they are not constantly required to be removed and put on, then when used as a grip, this will constantly cause inconvenience. If a metal clip is exposed to moisture and does not have a special anti-corrosion coating on it, traces of rust may appear on the curtains, which will be very difficult to remove.

Spacer cornice

Can be adjusted in length, so it will fit any window. There is a spring inside. This type is used, for example, in the bathroom for curtains. Convenient because it allows you to hang curtains without drilling. It is attached between the internal slopes of the window or (if there are no slopes) between the vertical frames.

After the spacer, it is lengthened and secured by turning one part of it counterclockwise (to shorten it, on the contrary, you need to turn it clockwise).

Types of curtain fastening

First of all, you need to decide what your final curtain should look like. Which fastenings are suitable for your option. They can be hidden from view, or vice versa, become another interior decoration.

  1. The curtain is attached to rings. A very convenient option to use and apply. The curtain is attached using loops.
  2. Fastening occurs using small hooks. One end of which is attached to the guide, the other to the internal loops.
  3. Loop fastening. The loop is sewn to the curtain and placed on a cornice, usually round.
  4. Everyone’s favorite method is eyelets; they are built into the curtain and attached to a round cornice.

Ceiling cornice

Manufacturing material – plastic. The kit includes special mounting hooks. They can be mounted in 1, 2 or 3 rows. They occur with and without a turn.

When choosing a cornice, you should pay attention to whether the product will move and slide along it with ease. This largely depends on the mount used.

Safety precautions

    When fixing ceiling cornices or wall structures, do not forget about the safety rules:
  • Before starting drilling, put on a respirator and safety glasses.
  • Please note that working with a hammer drill involves the formation of a large amount of dust, so it is recommended to use a professional power tool with an industrial vacuum cleaner included.
  • Only use stable stools or stepladders.
  • Make sure that there are no wires in the drilling area that could cause an electric shock if you touch them.

If you doubt your abilities, it is better to call a master who will quickly and efficiently do all the work for you.

Hanging tulle correctly

Tulle is used both in combination with curtains and independently. It visually enlarges the window and makes the room more spacious. It is good to use in a recreation area.

How to hang tulle without making a mistake in size? The width should be 2-3 times the width of the window. If there is a ribbon (braid) on top, then you need to pull the 2 cords hanging at the edges of the braid, gathering the tulle to the desired width. When assembled, it is permissible to exceed the window width by no more than 30 cm. The hooks are inserted at the same distance from each other into pockets along the strip.

When fastened using loops or eyelets, the folds are distributed manually, at an equal distance from each other. Hooks are inserted into loops or eyelet holes. If the tulle is hung together with the curtain, it is necessary to use a double curtain rod to be able to open and close them separately.

Samples in the interior

There is a video on how to hang curtains. A variation of tulle and curtains in calm shades is suitable for the living room. The beauty of the drapery attracts admiring attention, leaving the supporting system invisible.

For rooms in a minimalist style, a curtain rod made of metal would be a suitable option. Heavy curtains with shiny thread on the eyelets create large folds.

Light curtains create contrast with the baguette cornice. Careful ruching at the top is held together with tape.

Curtains with hooks will create coziness in both the living room and the apartment in an ethnic style.

An easy way to create coziness on your balcony is to hang a Velcro curtain. Curtains can be hung on plastic windows.

You can create coziness in the room by correctly making accents in the interior using elegant window decoration. By decorating the window in an unusual way, you will be able to disguise certain shortcomings in both large and small rooms.

Features of thread curtains

To give the room an exotic, original look, you can hang thread curtains on windows or doorways. They do not need additional decorations; with their help you can separate part of the room. You can install in different ways:

  • simply hanging it on a rod where it can be easily moved;
  • sewing a braid to the top, gathering the threads into a thicker muslin, attaching it to a cornice with rings and hooks;
  • sewing the braid with hooks into a fan, which will create the effect of straight folds;
  • attach the threads with adhesive tape.

The threads can be braided into braids, separated into two parts by tiebacks, etc.

Proper installation with appropriate fastening and design of curtains will be an excellent way to decorate your home, make it more cozy, attractive and comfortable for human habitation.

Loops and ties

These types of fastenings are usually made of textiles. A loop is a strip of fabric not exceeding 20 cm, the ends of which are sewn directly onto the top edge of the curtain.

The loop thus formed is strung onto the cornice. If both edges of the loop are stitched, then in order to hang the curtain you can remove the cornice. There is an option when one end of the loop is sewn to the curtain, and the other is secured with a button, snap or Velcro, which makes hanging the curtain easier.

With this method, moving the curtain along the cornice is somewhat difficult, because the fabric of the loops does not slide as much as, for example, metal rings. But with some skill, any housewife will quickly learn how to move the curtain easily and simply, forming beautiful, even folds on the fabric.

Ties are a method of fastening that resembles loops. Externally they look like a bow or a knot.

  • Curtains can contrast in color with the main background, serving as a decorative detail, but are often made of the same textile as the curtain itself and are simply sewn to the main fabric.
  • There is also an option when a strip of fabric (tie) is made separately and simply inserted into the hole at the top of the curtain.

Hanging curtains with ties requires a lot of time and patience; the fabric is not easy to evenly distribute along the cornice, but this option looks elegant, adding a feeling of joy and celebration.
