Platbands for plastic windows from the street: which is better - metal, plastic, decorative or polyurethane

Platbands for plastic windows are a special device that is used to protect the internal space from drafts. The product also performs a number of additional functions. After installing a PVC profile, usually the double-glazed windows themselves do not let cold air into the apartment. But problems are observed in the joints, the space between the profile and the opening. It is this problem that platbands partially solve. Partially - because openings cannot be left unfilled, polyurethane foam or other alternative materials will still have to be used.

What are they and their functions

These are special parts made from different materials that allow you to solve several main problems at once:

  1. Eliminate the possibility of a draft through the opening that is formed when installing a window between the frame itself and the wall.
  2. They also allow you to solve the decorative problem.

At the same time, such accessories are very convenient to install, and they are also easy to care for; periodically it is enough to simply wash the surface.

Varieties of platbands by shape and material of manufacture

Platbands for plastic windows can be of various types and profiles, made using a variety of materials:

  • Flat strips made of plastic, aluminum, polyurethane and wood.

The simplest ones are platbands in the form of flat plastic strips

Most often, flat-shaped platbands are used to frame plastic windows, since they are easy to install, create a neat appearance, are easy to maintain and have the most affordable price of all existing configurations.

  • Carved platbands, which are made of plastic or natural wood.

Carved platbands can give any home a completely unique look

This version of the parts is made mainly to order from wood, and therefore is quite expensive. Plastic versions of carved window frames are not easy to find in construction stores, since their mass production is not organized everywhere and is not large enough.

  • Shaped-type platbands can have a smooth semicircular shape or almost flat, but with a relief pattern in the form of stripes of different depths. This type is made from almost all of the listed materials.

Shaped-type platbands usually have one or another textured surface

  • Profile trims are made of plastic, wood, polyurethane or aluminum. They have a certain cross-sectional shape, sometimes made in a rather intricate configuration.

The peculiarity of profile platbands is their complex cross-sectional shape

Kinds

Modern window frames are available for sale in a wide range. They can have different profiles and types.

Flat

Made from aluminum, polyurethane, plastic and wood. This type is the most popular because it is not expensive and at the same time easy to care for during operation.

At the same time, it is worth mentioning about easy installation. As a result, the opening looks neat and aesthetically pleasing.

carved

These options can be made of either natural wood or plastic. However, this option is not suitable for everyone, due to design features.

Carved type models are not too cheap, as they are mainly made to order.

It is quite problematic to find carved window frames on sale, since their mass production is not organized everywhere and not on such a large scale.

Shaped view

In this case, the part has a smooth semicircular surface. It has a relief pattern, which is made of special strips that are sunk to different depths.

This option is made from almost all materials used in production.

Profile

They can be made of polyurethane, wood, aluminum and other bases. In cross-section, such models may have too intricate a shape.

Arrangement of platbands

Classic window trims consist of four elements: an upper and lower trim, two side strips. They can be connected using a single spike (as in the figure). They can also be connected end-to-end, as they do not carry any load. In this case, they simply fit the planks tightly one to another, securing each element separately.

Classic four-piece version

If the window has a window sill, there is no need for a bottom trim. When installing, first fix the window sill, then the side strips and lastly the top trim.

If there is a windowsill

The width of the platbands is selected individually each time, but is usually in the range of -100-250 mm. When choosing the width, we proceed from two technical parameters:

  • the platband must extend onto the frame by at least 5-10 mm;
  • in order not to interfere with opening the windows, they should retreat from the hinges by 10-20 mm (the further, the wider the shutters open).

The final width is selected based on the style of the house. In some places narrow planks are more suitable - 100-130 mm wide, in others wide ones - 200-250 mm are required. To avoid mistakes, you can “try on” the planks by pinning them on a couple of nails and see from afar which option you like best.

Installation of a classic wooden frame for windows

The thickness of the planks for the manufacture of platbands is 20-35 mm. In most cases, a board 20-25 mm thick is used, since this is the optimal size for DIY work - not too difficult to process, but quite voluminous for making a decorative pitchfork.

Step-by-step installation instructions

The method of fastening depends on the location of the plastic platband - on the street or inside the building.

From the street

Since the aggressive environment on the street affects not only the platband, but also the glue, in order not to take risks, experts recommend using mechanical fasteners, for example, self-tapping screws.

Important. If the windows are installed deep, the slopes must be placed first.

After installation, their outer edge is filed at an angle of 45 degrees to make it convenient to install platbands and hide the mounting seam. The cut is made with a special tool – a miter box. If the window is flush with the wall, the platbands are installed partially on the frame, without slopes.

How to install:

  1. Work begins with the upper horizontal bar. If the window is flush with the wall, put nipples on the screws and place them directly on the window frame evenly.
  2. The platband has grooves-ridges that are attached to the nipple. You need to attach the product to the seat and hit it with a sharp movement so that the nipples fit into the grooves of the comb.
  3. Align the products relative to each other so that the corners match and the cash out looks neat from the outside.

L-shaped products are attached in a similar way, only one of the sides fits the corner and is held in place by the ridge of the main part.

Installation of PVC trim on windows and doors:

From the inside

Inside the opening, as a rule, is complemented by slopes, which need to be installed first. Installation instructions for plastic trims:

  1. Process the corner, level it using guides, which can be ordinary wood blocks.
  2. If you plan to install L-shaped trims, the main part of it is attached to the guides, on which the extension will then be mounted. If the casing is ordinary and will be attached with glue, then installation is carried out directly on the guides.
  3. Installation starts from top to bottom. The first profile is sawed at 45-degree angles so that the products fit tightly and neatly during installation.
  4. The profile is installed from left to right, fastened with light tapping if the installation is carried out using self-tapping screws. Afterwards, you need to level it so that it recedes the same distance on the sides.
  5. Afterwards, the side profiles are installed in the same way and secured.

Indoor window decoration:

Selecting a platband based on material of manufacture

It is important to choose the right platband, which would match in appearance not only the window frame, but also the material of the facade walls or its external decoration.

  • Plastic options have the most affordable price and a very aesthetic appearance, however, they do not have a very long service life.

Plastic platbands are attractive due to their low price

Typically, all manufacturers of plastic windows also have in their product range platbands of the same color as the profile for the frames. Therefore, when placing an order, you can immediately ask which types of decorative trim can be offered.

As a rule, plastic trims are made in different colors, but the most popular option is white. After it, “on the popularity ladder” is brown-chocolate, and then other colors follow, which are used much less frequently. Therefore, not all window manufacturers can offer the profile of the desired rare shade.

If you try, you can find plastic trims with colors that best harmonize with the overall style of facade decoration

The color of the frames is usually matched to the shades of the walls or roof of the house, and sometimes the design of the facade is carried out on contrasting principles.

Plastic framing options are produced in sets that are assembled into a single frame on site, or in a finished, solid form, in the likeness of a frame, which can only be secured around the perimeter of the window opening.

There are special plastic profiles for platbands, which are mounted on the wall and snapped into place with a special locking connection on the slopes installed around the window. This option allows you not only to create a neat frame, but also to securely connect the slopes with the decorative frame of the opening, without any gaps.

  • Platbands made of polyurethane also deserve attention, as they are often used to decorate windows.

Profiles made of this material can have different relief shapes, they are light in weight and can be easily adjusted to size and mounted on a window opening or even directly on a window.

Polyurethane framing options withstand moisture and sunlight, so they will last for a very long time.

Profile polyurethane trims can be repainted in the desired shades if desired.

This material can be coated with paint, so if you decide to change the facade design, there will be no problems with changing the color of these elements. When painted, polyurethane becomes even more resistant to external influences, acquires an aesthetic appearance and is very easy to clean from dust deposits.

Platbands are also made from polystyrene foam, which usually have additional internal reinforcement. Their quality is somewhat inferior to polyurethane foam, but they can also be used for both external and internal finishing of window openings with plastic windows.

  • Natural wood frames are very durable and beautiful, provided they are well treated with protective compounds. Such parts, with high-quality performance, have a fairly high cost.

Wooden trim is, of course, a “classic” façade decoration

Wooden frames for plastic windows are perfect for a house that has wooden walls or is finished with a material that reliably imitates wood. As mentioned above, wooden platbands with figured carvings are most often made by hand and ordered individually for each style of selected facade design.

Can it be used?

Platbands frame the windows on the outside and inside of the building .
Their main task is practical - to preserve materials at the site of the installation seam, between the wall and the window structure.

During construction, a technological gap is formed between the wall and the window opening, which is supplemented with insulation, but this does not save the situation.

Plastic products prevent the penetration of moisture, precipitation, steam and wind . In addition, they externally close the window opening and give it a finished look. All windows in the house are decorated with the same elements to maintain a single style.

Plastic is one of the most convenient and versatile materials for platbands. It is especially suitable for plastic windows; here they not only perform their functionality, but also look beautiful. A special material is used that is not sensitive to dirt, diluted with components that protect the plastic from cold temperatures and heat.

The elements are suitable for both outdoor and indoor placement. Today, manufacturers offer not only white sheet plastic, but also colored materials, as well as materials that replicate the texture of natural wood or stone. The material is universal and can be used for any windows.

Important. When choosing plastic trims, you need to pay attention to the temperature they can withstand. If you plan to install the element outdoors, the material must be suitable for the specific conditions of the area.

What materials are they made from?

It is worth noting that today protective parts can be made from different components.

The most common are the following:

  1. PVC casing.
  2. Polyurethane.
  3. Tree.
  4. Metal.
  5. Aluminum.

In order to pay attention to a certain option, it is worth taking into account the peculiarities of a particular basis.

Plastic

Despite the fact that PVC platband for windows is very popular, it has both disadvantages and advantages. In particular, this option can be quite simply matched to the design of the entire house, and it is also easy to install, maintain and maintain, and the cost is low.

But there is also a minus. Experts concluded based on the use of plastic structures that the model for designing a slope is not durable.

Each manufacturer of plastic structures offers not only the main parts for installation, but also additional accessories made of plastic in different colors. The most popular is white, but you can try and find painted material.

Made from polyurethane

Polyurethane structures are also not so rarely used to decorate the opening. Profiles can have a wide variety of relief shapes. The advantages of such parts are that they are lightweight and easy to adjust to size. Installation is almost always done on the window opening itself.

Also, the advantages of finishing structures are that during installation they withstand exposure to sunlight and moisture. Therefore, such options will not change their appearance for a long time and will please the eye.

Also, many choose decoration accessories made from this material only because they are easy and simple to repaint. At the same time, when painted, polyurethane models are distinguished by their high ability to withstand negative external influences.

Wooden

If we talk about the classic design of a window opening from the street side, then installing platbands on windows involves the use of wooden models. It demonstrates durability and reliability, but only if it is pre-treated with special compounds.

But you should be prepared for the fact that the cost of such options is much higher.

At the same time, wooden models are made in the original carved style. Suitable for a building made in a classic, original design.

The disadvantage of wooden products is that they need to be painted more often than polyurethane ones, since natural wood is subject to fading.

Platband dimensions

It is very important to correctly calculate the dimensions of the platband so that it does not turn out that after the work is done completely, the element will not fit the cocoon opening by a few millimeters.

It is important to calculate the dimensions correctly so that the platbands fit perfectly at the corners

Calculations are made as follows:

  • The height and width of the window opening are measured - these will be the parameters of the internal perimeter of the platband.
  • Then, the width of the platband is measured from the opening line to determine how much it will cover the wall. This is especially important when the window frame is in the same plane as the wall.
  • The height of the platband should be equal to the height of the window opening plus two widths of the platband panel. Thus, the calculation is carried out if the horizontal top and bottom bars of the frame being created will have the same width as the vertical ones. If the horizontal panels are planned to be made wider, then the vertical panels should have a height equal to the height of the window opening plus the width of the upper and lower sides of the casing.
  • The size of the sides of the platband will also depend on which corner joint will be chosen, so before you start cutting the board, you need to carefully consider all the nuances.

Installation

Installation work directly depends on what type of platbands was chosen. But you can still make out an approximate diagram according to which the products are installed:

  1. Surface preparation. The window opening will need to be leveled. As a rule, it is not only filled with polyurethane foam or other alternative materials, but also plastered a little. It is better to make the surface perfectly flat. To do this, use a building level. Otherwise, the platbands will not fit tightly to the surface, so their functions will suffer;
  2. Choosing a suitable method of fastening platbands. They will also need to be cut if you do not buy a full standard set;
  3. Install the panels, use the selected and most convenient fastening method for this;
  4. Treat the joints with special sealants.

Some individual trims are complemented by fastenings on the sides so that they can be fastened together using the “groove-to-groove” technology. They are a little more expensive, but easier to install and also more airtight. If the installer has never interacted with platbands before, then he is recommended to choose these particular models in order to create not only a beautiful window, but also a functional one.

  • Fastening with double-sided tape. This is how the central part of the platband is secured. The method is suitable for installation in a region where there is a relatively favorable climate throughout the year. For sudden temperature changes, double-sided tape will not work.
  • Use of special mounting elements. In this case, the platbands are attached to the frame. It is imperative to use a fixed surface of the profile, and not a movable one.

Platbands are one of those elements of window construction that can be installed independently if the consumer has enough time to study and implement the instructions. Therefore, it is quite possible to save money on the services of specialists.

Drawings for carved frames

Ordinary platbands with a smooth surface will not be able to complete the composition of the facade of the house. You can make carved parts yourself or choose ready-made ones.

First, you should select designs for carving, and then use these designs to make cardboard stencils for window trim.

If you have the appropriate skills, sketches can be made independently. They can also be found in special publications and the world wide web.

To accurately select a subject for carving, it is recommended to make a drawing of the facade with all the decorative details. Next, you should establish the compatibility of the elements, and only after that make the final choice.

Cardboard stencils are made from the drawings, which are then placed on the frame blank, and their contours are transferred to the wood.

The best option for wooden planks are pine planks without defects.

To work you will need the following devices and mechanisms:

  • feather drill ⌀1.2 cm;
  • screwdriver;
  • grinding machine.

After transferring the pattern onto wooden blanks, it is recommended to drill several holes in the blank along the contour of the pattern. By inserting a jigsaw into these holes, the elements of the platband are cut out.

For a high-quality result, cutting should be done without interruption, in one movement.

After cutting is completed, it is necessary to get rid of burrs and other defects using a grinding machine, cover with a protective solution, and then paint the finished product.

Manufacturing technology

Platbands with slotted threads. Such a thread has no background and is otherwise called through. The color of these trims should contrast with the color of the walls.

Platbands with applied thread. Such platbands are made of individual parts that are attached to a wooden base and create a three-dimensional effect.

To make platbands you will need wooden planks 3 x 10 cm, abrasive paper, a plane, as well as power tools: a jigsaw, a grinder and a milling cutter.

The workpieces are first processed with a plane and cutter, and then with sandpaper. For carved parts you will also need curly chisels. The first experiments should be carried out on simple drawings, then complicating the tasks.

Production of overhead platbands:

  • processing workpieces with a plane;
  • preparation of blanks for 100 mm overlays;
  • preparing stencils;
  • marking overlays using stencils;
  • drilling holes along the contour of the pattern;
  • forming carved elements using a chisel;
  • sanding the finished product;
  • attaching the lining to the platband with screws, nails or glue;
  • assembly of all elements of the platband;
  • installation of platbands in the required place.

In most cases, platbands are mounted on the sides and top of the window opening. Less commonly installed at the bottom of the window.

The edges of the platbands are cut with or without a miter box at the desired angle.

The platbands are attached to the concrete wall using dowels and screws.

Types of plastic platbands

By appearance:

Flat.

Rounded.

Carved (relief).

According to the composition of the material:

Made from sheet metal-plastic. It is used to produce flat platbands because it has the lowest tensile strength compared to other types of material.

Planks made of polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane. Carved relief products are obtained from such materials. They can be used both outside and inside the house.

By color:

Colorless (white).

Colored.

Depending on the purpose:

External.

Internal.

The modern building materials market offers a wide range of plastic finishes that imitate natural wood in different shades (oak, walnut, cherry, etc.), various metals or with the application of designer patterns.

Platbands with a cable channel inside are also very easy to use. Their installation is carried out using a special fastening device and does not require special skills.

Performance Requirements

Documentation has been developed for window structures; it regulates the technical characteristics of PVC platbands - this is GOST 30674 of 1999. According to it, standard product sizes are: length 150-250 cm, width 3.8-9.8 cm, thickness 1-1, 3 cm.

Requirements for plastic platbands:

  1. The plastic is waterproof.
  2. The material is non-flammable; at high heating temperatures, the product does not ignite, but melts. This property helps to contain the spread of fire.
  3. High coefficient of thermal expansion. When exposed to temperature, the material changes its physical properties. To maintain the shape of the product, they are supplemented with stiffening ribs. They also give strength to the entire product.
  4. Thermal conductivity – 0.19 W/m x °C.
  5. The material must contain light stabilizers. These substances help preserve the color of the product when exposed to sunlight. Their presence in external structures is especially important.
  6. Service life of at least 20 years, depending on the aggressiveness of the external environment and conditions inside the building.
  7. Insensitivity to temperature changes, precipitation, wind, dust and other environmental influences.

Important. Noise insulation and throughput of plastic platbands largely depend on operating conditions, quality of materials and installation work. The accuracy of work along the entire window block and slopes also affects.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

  1. Modern design.
  2. Plasticity of the material.
  3. Biological stability.
  4. Low weight of finished products.
  5. Independence from weather conditions.
  6. Resistant to temperature changes.
  7. Variety of colors.
  8. Absolutely waterproof.
  9. Ease of installation.
  10. Easy to care for.
  11. Retains color during use.
  12. Resistant to rot and mold.
  13. Durability.

Flaws:

  1. Low environmental friendliness.
  2. During the combustion process, the material quickly melts, releasing toxic substances.
  3. Deforms under the influence of mechanical loads.

A little about finishing plastic windows

Please note that the finishing of plastic windows consists precisely in the installation of platbands, window sills and slopes.

At the same time, everything should look harmonious. This will be the main topic of the article.

Initial preparation for finishing

Usually, after installing the frame, we are presented with a view of a bare span with polyurethane foam. According to standards, everything from the inside needs to be covered with a vapor barrier membrane, which is what should be done if careless builders forgot about it. This must be done before you begin finishing work. Such an overlap will guarantee the outflow of moisture from the thermal insulation, since water has an unpleasant property for construction to penetrate everywhere.

Perhaps you have noticed plastic plugs on the outside of the frame before? Sometimes there are assumptions that these are installation elements that are not related to finishing. But these plugs block the holes that lead to the built-in double-glazed window. This helps eliminate the suction cup effect caused by multiple rubber seals, which can be made worse by moisture inside.

But how? Very simple. In any case, moisture will penetrate inside the window through the seal, which will make it difficult to open the sashes in the future, as well as, if necessary, remove the double-glazed window.

For successful operation, practice has shown that the above actions will not be superfluous, which means that a vapor barrier membrane is also needed to keep the insulation dry. We strongly do not recommend changing it to polyethylene.

Installation of platbands and slopes on plastic windows

I would like to add that when laying a vapor barrier film, excess polyurethane foam should be trimmed. After this, finishing begins. To begin with, you should use a starting profile that looks like the letter G. But there is a small problem: from the end of this “G” a stick will hang, which is equal to a third of the base. This profile should be screwed with semi-cylindrical screws outwards with the long side along the entire perimeter of the window. With its upper edge, our L-shaped profile will lie on the edge of the window, and a beautiful joint will be obtained.

The sheathing should be laid on the other side of the slopes. We nail a thin strip along the inner perimeter of the window opening. How much will it be in cm?

You can choose one of two options:

  1. The wood should not crack when installed with dowels and nails.
  2. When using pressure screws in installation, they should enter at an angle of 45 degrees. Select the thickness and width of the slats specifically for this parameter. And again, taking into account the fact that the tree should not crack.

The next step is installing slopes

Their inner horses, which adjoins the room, bifurcate into an F-shaped profile.

After installing all the elements, we come to the most interesting part - installing the platbands. Plastic window casings have many advantages over wooden ones: they do not dry out over time, do not rot, and will not be affected by fungus. But their functions are the same: cover the joints of the window frame with the wall, prevent moisture from entering the gaps, increase the sound-insulating and heat-insulating properties of windows.

Carved plastic window frames

PVC is often used for structures, but sometimes they are combined with wood: the design, color and texture are so varied that sometimes you can even find samples with imitation wood. The material can be easily matched to the facade (if the house is faced with siding), or, conversely, contrast the windows.

Important! New elements should not violate the unity of the façade style. For example, on the windows of a house made of timber, snow-white PVC will be out of place.

But plastic trim with a wood-like texture will look great in a log building. PVC window frames are not the only ones of their kind, as polyurethane analogues can also be found. This material is resistant to temperature changes, lightweight, not capricious, and also quite plastic and aesthetic.

Polyurethane trims

They don’t have to be straight, as you can even make a porthole-shaped window out of them. They are not used as a separate decorative element, but, on the contrary, for general design: using polyurethane, you can make chic bas-reliefs for stucco molding and other decorations, examples of which you can find on the Internet.

Made from foam plastic

There are also window frames made of high-density foam plastic, but even with these parameters they are fragile and therefore are almost never used.

In appearance, the platbands can be telescopic or overhead: the former are something like a construction kit (especially if you take the accessories included), where each element will be connected to each other with ready-made locks. Often, plastic platbands are also installed on slopes along with them.

Advice: it will always be better if you buy platbands with additions - this will make it much easier to choose a single color scheme, which is very important when decorating windows in different shades or wood.

Platbands on plastic windows for external finishing are installed and fixed with self-tapping screws, synthetic adhesives, and nails. If there are no locks to secure the elements to each other, you need to cut the ends at an angle of 45 degrees.

There are also removable products: in this case, metal fasteners will need to be installed on the windows, and the platbands will snap onto them. This is very convenient, especially if you constantly change them or just need to replace a damaged element.

If the installation is carried out on outbuildings, the platbands can also be attached with double-sided tape. But this method is far from reliable and will not withstand gusts of wind.

The shape of plastic platbands can be flat, convex or profiled. The profile itself can be asymmetrical and symmetrical, combined and curved, and the composition includes convexities and all kinds of combinations of angles.

Interestingly, shaped platbands can be used both to decorate the facade and the room.

Typically, plastic window frames do not have a high coefficient of thermal expansion. The plastic will not swell from water and will not get wet. It is quite easy to install and does not require technological gaps.

Carved plastic window frames

It is generally accepted that plastic trims are just a flat profile strip. It's not like that at all. Plastic is a fairly flexible material from which relief structures can also be made. Polyurethane and PVC strips are installed not only on plastic, but also on wooden windows. In appearance, they are difficult to distinguish from natural wood, compared to which plastic has a number of undeniable advantages. So, it does not dry out over time, does not swell from moisture, and has a low cost.

A real find will be carved window trim for a house lined with siding. You can choose a frame of the desired texture and color depending on the appearance of the base material.

Due to their high plasticity, carved platbands can be installed even on round-shaped windows and porthole windows, and they can be sculpted and bas-relief patterns can be made on them.

Application of door frames

A door frame is a frame consisting of a frame, platbands and additional elements that are attached to the opening. And the door is attached to it using hinges.

The extension is a board that covers the end walls of the opening if they are wider than the thickness of the box.

Plastic door trims are needed to:

  • hide the gaps between the frame and the wall after installation;
  • protect these gaps from moisture and dust and extend the service life of the entire structure;
  • give a complete and beautiful look;
  • if additional sound insulation is needed, you can install a seal under the door frame.

Video description

An interesting way of making carved parts using wood crowns is shown in the video:

  • It is easier to make an overlay decor by cutting out various geometric shapes, curls or flowers from wood along the outer contour and fixing them on the surface of a flat plank. The result is a three-dimensional pattern, the convexity of which can be emphasized by painting the substrate and decorative overlays in different colors.

Note! When renewing the paint coating, it will be more difficult to accurately apply contrasting paint than at the installation stage, when all the parts can first be processed and then connected.

How to attach platbands to interior doors

Simple fastening of flat platbands is performed at an angle of 90 degrees. The vertical planks fit tightly at the top with the horizontal one. When installing wooden or MDF elements of complex shapes, the ends are cut at an angle of 45 degrees. There are 4 methods of fixing the planks.

Using finishing nails

Wooden or MDF door casing is easier to nail with nails with flat heads. The fastening is reliable, and if necessary, the planks can be easily dismantled. You can use nails of a different configuration, and so that the heads are not visible, they are removed with side cutters. The length of finishing nails for platbands is about 40 mm. The size can be calculated individually, taking into account the thickness of the cash. Having passed through the bar, the nail must enter at least 20 mm into the body of the door frame.

Attachment points are marked on the workpieces, maintaining the same distance. Typically, a pitch of 500 mm is maintained. Using the markings, drill through holes with a diameter corresponding to the thickness of the nail. After joining to the door frame, the platbands are carefully nailed. For aesthetics, hats are painted over with a wax pencil.

Liquid nails

To attach cash to interior doors without nails, use an adhesive - liquid nails. The advantage of this method is that there is no visible fixation site. The downside is the weak fastening, as well as inconvenience during dismantling. In addition, liquid nails are only applicable if the adjacent walls are perfectly level.

The door frames are installed after sawing and fitting of the blanks. The plank is lubricated on the back side with adhesive and pressed tightly against the wall. To glue platbands for interior doors, it is enough to hold each strip pressed for no more than a minute.

Fastening with self-tapping screws

The method is similar to fastening with finishing nails, only instead of them, wood screws 25 mm long and 6 mm thick are used. Places for holes are marked on the workpiece in increments of 500 mm. A drill of the same diameter or with a margin of 1 mm is used.

It is advisable to recess the hats into the body of the plank. On the front side of the workpiece, the hole is expanded with a drill of a larger diameter to a depth of 1–1.5 mm. Now all that remains is to attach the trim to the interior doors with self-tapping screws. You need to tighten the hardware so that the head fits into the recess. The place of fixation is painted over with a wax pencil.

Attachment by beaks

The method does not require the use of screws, nails or adhesive. The cash box is equipped with a beak-shaped lock. The connecting pin is inserted into the recess on the box and pressed until it clicks.

The advantage of this method is ease of installation and invisibility of the mounting location. A negative point is the delamination of MDF trims during dismantling. Over time, spontaneous destruction of the joints may occur, which requires additional treatment of the joints with glue.

Sequence of installation work

To correctly attach platbands to windows, you need to consider installation options, then choose the best method:

  1. Mount to a frame or wall using mounting elements.
  2. Special fastening latches are installed on the frame, overhead strips are placed on them and snapped into place like a clothing button.
  3. Installation is carried out using double-sided tape, which is glued to the frame on one side, and overhead strips are glued on the other side. This method is not reliable enough, so it is used extremely rarely.

Attention! Before buying decorative trims for the facade, check the availability and serviceability of the fasteners that come with the kit.

To correctly install overlay trims on windows with your own hands, you need to carefully take measurements, make markings, and cut the product, which is sold in linear meters. These works are performed in the following sequence:

  1. Measure the height of the frame; two parts of this size will be needed.
  2. Measure the width of the frame; if the window has a molding, you will need one piece; if plastic trim is provided around the entire perimeter of the window, you will need two pieces.
  3. Since window frames are sold by linear meters, parts are cut from the main product according to the measurements taken and of the required length.
  4. To connect horizontal and vertical elements at an angle of 90 degrees, the ends of each part must be cut at an angle of 45 degrees, this makes it possible to correctly join the elements.
  5. The dimensions of the platbands must correspond to the dimensions of the window frames.

To ensure that the joints of the overlay strips are even and the angle is exactly 45 degrees, use a special device - a miter box.

If you install plastic windows yourself, you need to remember the following:

  1. For vertical elements, the cut is made on one side if there is a low tide, on both sides if the plastic platbands have a closed space.
  2. Horizontal pieces should have a 45-degree cut on both sides.

The next stage is installing the parts on the window slope. If the slats have special grooves, and the window slopes have tenons, then you just need to align them and snap them into place. If there are none, try on the parts, applying them to the window, and after the final adjustment of all the elements, you need to remove the platbands from the window, apply “liquid nails” type glue to the underside of the parts and the joints of the corners, then glue the strip.

Platbands for PVC doors: types and installation features

Recently, the range of products for entrance and interior doors has expanded significantly; you can often find frames made of aluminum, precious wood, even glass, but it is the finishing of doors made of plastic that has gained the greatest popularity among the population.

PVC trims are light in weight; sufficient strength; Available in a wide range of colors and textures; practically do not support combustion; do not react when exposed to moisture; retain appearance and geometric shape; easy to install and, if necessary, quickly replaced.

One of the positive qualities of PVC door frames can be considered affordability - the material has a low cost and can be purchased at any construction supermarket.

But not everything is so rosy; these products have some disadvantages:

  • plastic trims are not allowed to be installed on external entrance doors - the material is subject to rapid deterioration when exposed to low temperatures;
  • prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation negatively affects the appearance of the planks - some types of plastic lose color under sunlight, warp, quickly dry out and crumble;
  • low resistance to mechanical damage is another disadvantage of plastic products. Plastic door frames are not able to withstand mechanical influences (impacts), even short-term ones - there is always a fear that the door filling element will be damaged even with minor rough touches.

The surface of the plastic frame is easily scratched, but it is easy to care for - a light wash with the addition of a regular product will not cause any difficulty in removing dirt.

Varieties

To begin with, it is worth mentioning the sizes of plastic door frames; their width varies from 30 to 80 mm, and the length has no limit, since the material is often sold in linear meters.

What width to choose depends on the size of the door leaf and the presence of an open gap after installing the frame. In any case, it is worth choosing the option when the gap is reliably blocked.

Agree that white trim will look inappropriate if the room has a dark brown door.

Manufacturers offer consumers door frames of various shapes: paneled, figured, flat, carved, L-shaped and telescopic. The last two options are used for finishing non-standard doors. For more information about installing platbands, watch this video:

Based on the material used, plastic door decor elements are divided into two types:

  1. Framing elements of the doorway are made of PVC sheet, which, in turn, can be monolithic and with a heterogeneous structure. Such platbands have a more rigid shape and are less deformed from thermal and mechanical influences.
  2. Products made of polyvinyl chloride - such platbands are made by pressing (casting) with a relief surface. The use of polyurethane or polyvinyl chloride in the production of platbands allows you to create relief products. It is allowed to use polyurethane platbands to frame the entrances of external doors; they are less susceptible to low temperatures than plastic ones.

Platband design and installation

Platband installation diagram

PVC door trims consist of two parts. The bottom strip is attached directly to the surface of the walls and has special grooves for masking wires and cables.

The upper decorative part is inserted into the channel of the lower strip, which is pressed tightly in a special groove. It is the top panel that has an applied texture, pattern, relief surface, and a certain color tone.

To do this, you need to determine the method of installing the platbands, of which there are only two: with an oblique cut and with a straight cut. The choice of notch option determines the amount of material that needs to be purchased to design the doorway. To learn how to properly install the trims and platbands with your own hands, watch this video:

The main methods of fastening the platband depend on the installation features of the door. For installation, liquid nails, self-tapping screws, regular nails without heads and finishing nails are used.

Making platbands on your own

Self-made platbands will forever remain unique and will express the aesthetic taste of the owners of the house.

Various designs

  • The flat cornice represents the wealth and conservative style of the inhabitants of the house.
  • Platbands with an arched top are ideal for non-standard shaped windows with a semicircular top part.
  • Openwork platbands give the house a unique personality and attractiveness.
  • Attachment parts complement the structure and give it a voluminous and finished look.

When making platbands with your own hands, it is important to find the right combination of material, color and decor.

If it is not possible to manufacture it yourself, you can purchase ready-made products. Platbands are supplied with the necessary fasteners, and their installation is carried out without difficulty.

Cost indicators

The cost of accessories for decorative window decoration and sealing cracks depends on the following factors:

  1. Manufacturing material.
  2. Trade brand.
  3. Plate sizes.
  4. Functional purpose.
  5. Decorative design (color, texture, presence of artistic carvings and similar artistic excesses).

The cost can be determined by the price per 1 linear meter or per measured product (for example, 2.2 meters) as a whole.

Let's compare the prices of several products:

  1. Vinyl trim "Holzplast Premium" (Germany) 3.66 meters long, golden oak color, semicircular section costs 605 rubles.
  2. A similar product made of polyvinyl chloride, 2.2 meters long, produced in Moscow Region, will cost the buyer 150 rubles.

In order not to get confused by prices, which today are sometimes simply logically inexplicable, you can adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Russian parts made of polyvinyl chloride, 2.2 meters long, plain or “wood” colored, cost about 60, 0-140 rubles.
  2. Functionally similar products with a cable channel will cost the buyer at least 140 rubles.
  3. If the plastic profile is made in Germany, then the minimum price is 220-250 rubles per 3.66 meters.
  4. A semicircular flat strip for sealing cracks and without any decorative frills costs 55-70 rubles per linear meter.
  5. A self-adhesive polyurethane casing in a single color will cost at least 75 rubles.

A separate category of products intended for decorative external cladding of window openings consists of sets that include two horizontal and two vertical strips of various artistic designs and 4 corner overlays for masking the joints of these strips.

Their sizes are standard and correspond to the size of a plastic window. The minimum price for a set is 450 rubles. The advantage of these kits (despite the relatively high price) is that there is no need for preparatory work (sawing planks, adjusting sizes) - the individual parts of the kit are simply assembled onto the window opening

Criterias of choice

For the ideal combination of the flashing with the window, you should follow a number of points when choosing and purchasing. In this case, you can not only ensure an elegant appearance of the window group, but also effectively protect the seams from the effects of ultraviolet radiation and dampness.

  • The trim strips should be selected to match the color of the window frame, the color of the façade or the interior decoration. In this case, the flashings will not discord with the surrounding colors, looking like eye-catching patches.
  • The texture of the material should also match the window. For example, wooden flashings will look bad on white plastic windows. They are best used for finishing frames made of natural wood, or plastic, stylized to resemble the texture of wood. In the same way, white additional elements made of metal or PVC are not suitable for wooden frames.
  • Before purchasing, you need to measure the width of the joining seam between the window and the wall opening. The width of the plank should completely cover the seam, extending onto the facade wall.
  • When choosing, you should give preference to products from companies that have proven themselves in the market. The price of such flashings will be slightly higher, but all costs are compensated in the long term, thanks to their long service life.

As practice shows, the highest quality flashings, as well as other additional components, are produced by well-known companies that produce profiles for plastic windows. Some of these brands include:

  • "Centuries".
  • "Rehau".
  • "KVE".
  • "Mont Blanc".
  • "Proplex".

It is recommended to purchase sash strips in specialized stores that sell components for plastic windows. Or directly from official representatives of window profile manufacturers. The cost of flashings depends on the material of manufacture and the manufacturer. Flexible plastic self-adhesive elements will cost an average of 20-50 rubles per linear meter. Rigid PVC planks will cost from 50 to 300 rubles per meter. The price for wooden and metal ones, depending on the width, decorative finish and type of wood/type of metal, ranges from 100 to 1000 or more rubles per linear meter.

Recommendations

Boards for carved platbands should have a thickness of no more than 30 - 40 mm. Thicker boards are difficult to process during artistic cutting.

If you have no experience in wood carving, you should start with the simplest options and, after gaining experience, move on to more complex ones.

When determining the required width of the platbands, one should not forget about their protective function. The platband must cover all the gaps between the window and the wall of the house.

When placing stencils on the workpiece before cutting, you should take into account the direction of the wood grain.

In the process of learning wood carving, large ornaments should be used. In small work, imperfections will be more noticeable.

Working with platbands requires patience and thoughtfulness. Having finished the carving, you should not lose attention, but carefully process the platbands and prepare them for long-term use.

Finally, the platbands are installed in their intended place. After this, you can evaluate the work done.

Advantages of PVC decorative strips

PVC door frames are now widespread and in high demand due to the following advantages:

  • Wide range of options for decorative characteristics. PVC suggests the possibility of creating any textures and colors. The platband can be painted or wallpaper can be glued to it.
  • Moisture resistance. PVC products do not deform and do not lose their appearance in rooms with high levels of humidity (bathrooms, bathrooms, kitchens).
  • A light weight. This parameter is important both in terms of transportation and installation. Light planks can even be secured with liquid nails.
  • Easy to install. Such platbands are installed as simply as possible using a minimum of necessary tools.
  • Affordable price. Plastic products will cost less than wooden or metal counterparts.

The material also has its drawbacks. Thin PVC products are not impact-resistant enough, which is why they can be easily broken during installation or careless operation. The platbands are not frost-resistant enough, so they should be used indoors; they are not suitable for the street.
