Review: IKEA Schottis blinds - Budget blinds!
Not long ago we moved into a new apartment.
Of course, we had to invest a lot of money in renovations and furniture. Therefore, we decided to purchase some necessary, but less important things as funds became available. The plan was to buy blinds, but 2 all-glass balconies and 2 doors would have cost a lot of money. And one friend suggested to us a cheap and practical option - to purchase Ikea Schottis blinds. There are no Ikea stores in Crimea, but there are many intermediaries who are ready to deliver the necessary goods to order. We purchased Schottis blinds for 210 rubles. And on the official Ikea website they cost 159 rubles.
The blinds are packed in a regular transparent thick bag.
Of course, it was interesting to look at the miracle blinds. Initially, they reminded me of thick paper, crumpled into an accordion.
“Schottis” is made of polyester. It is one of the most popular synthetic fabrics used for clothing, upholstery, etc.
The size of the Schottis blinds is 90*190 centimeters. The length is good for us, because the windows are large. But the width is large. Our windows range from 40 to 60 centimeters. You can’t really combine the remaining stripes with each other.
You can immediately see care recommendations. There are absolute nos here: do not wash, do not bleach, do not iron, do not take to dry cleaning) Such products are cleaned with a brush or vacuum cleaner with a soft attachment.
Inside the package, in addition to the blinds, there are instructions for “installation” in the form of a strip of paper with text, 2 polypropylene clips and a strip of Velcro on double-sided tape.
Schottis blinds are manufactured in Taiwan.
The most exciting moment is the “installation” of the blinds. For those who have encountered such a product, detailed instructions are attached. You definitely can't go wrong using it.
Initially, you need to measure the window on which the blinds will be attached. We measured clearly on glass. Perhaps someone will want the fabric to cover part of the frame as well.
I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to cut the required piece of blinds straight. But everything turned out to be simple. When folded, the blinds can be cut perfectly with a knife in one movement.
There is tape glued to one of the edges of the blinds. The protective strip is removed and the product is attached. We attached the blinds to the glass itself. Because the material is light, the blinds hang like an accordion. Their bottom is attached with Velcro in the selected location, or remains in that position.
The only thing I didn't like was the label that was firmly sewn to the blinds. I had to work hard to get it off on the first product. By cutting the rest of the blinds, we were smarter. They just cut a strip without a label)
Now I’ll show you everything in practice. Our windows are mostly narrow and long. They all face the sunny side, so the sun wakes us up at 5-6 in the morning. After we attached the Shottis, sleep became more comfortable. Polyester does not protect 100% from bright light, but it diffuses it well. At the same time, the balcony began to look stylish!
We fixed the blinds with Velcro on the balcony and balcony door. I was worried that they wouldn't last long in the sun, but I was wrong. They have been reliably “holding” polyester for several months now.
And on the second balcony we fix the bottom of the blinds with plastic clips. This way you can adjust the length by pinching more or less fabric.
With the help of clips you can create an oriental flavor in the room. To do this, you need to secure the edges with a clamp. In general, there is room for creativity)
After several months of use, there are no complaints about the Schottis blinds. I am very glad that such a budget option was finally found. By the way, my friend “Schottis” has had Ikea on her windows for several years now. During this time they have not lost their appearance, shape and color. And she recently ordered a couple more of these for the nursery to use as curtains.
Popular colors and sizes of Schottis blinds
When you don’t have enough money to buy curtains, and you need to cover the window with something, good old newspapers or a sheet immediately come to mind. But the aesthetic appearance of such “curtains” leaves much to be desired and spoils the overall impression of the brand new renovation and furniture.
The ideal way out of this situation would be to buy SchottisIkea blinds. This is an example of temporary pleated window curtains that are very easy to install and cost much less than full blinds. And their appearance is quite pleasant and neat. The photo shows examples of placement on the window and on the balcony.
Which blinds are the best option for a balcony?
Before you start placing blinds on plastic windows, you should understand whether they are needed at all.
Will they become a hindrance when closing or opening the window? One thing can be said for sure - if a loggia or balcony is converted into a separate room, then blinds are definitely needed.
When choosing blinds, in addition to design and appearance, special attention should be paid to the following points:
- functionality and practicality of fasteners;
- It should be taken into account that not all types of fastenings are suitable for window units;
- practicality of blinds;
- It is better to choose plastic or fabric material for the balcony; wood and bamboo can create unnecessary noise.
What are the best blinds for a balcony?
For balconies and loggias, plastic blinds are best suited because:
- they are easy to clean and wash;
- do not lose their appearance over time;
- resistant to sunlight.
Before taking measurements, you need to decide where you want to install the blinds:
- on the window sash itself;
- on part of the wall above the window;
- into the window opening.
Advantages and disadvantages of Schottis blinds
Thanks to polyester canvas, Schottis blinds from Ikea allow light diffused light to pass through, protecting from direct sunlight. Inexpensiveness, ease of installation and maintenance, as well as a pleasant appearance have made these filters a favorite not only among residents of houses and apartments, but also among summer residents. Some are especially relevant for ground floor windows, as they protect residents from prying eyes.
Customers often leave reviews about the quality of the product on the Ikea website. Having analyzed them, we highlight the following positive qualities of curtains:
- simplicity and accessibility of installation - no need to drill holes or have a special tool, anyone can attach them without any special skills;
- protection from bright sun - the white color of the canvas muffles the solar flow, but does not block it completely, so there will be pleasant diffused light in the room;
- standard parameters and design features make it easy to adjust to any window size;
- occupy a minimum of space - they are attached directly to the window sash;
- the neutral appearance and neatness of the product fit pleated into any room, any interior and style;
- the design allows you to adjust the window opening height;
- easy to maintain - just vacuum or brush off the dust with a dry brush;
- low cost.
Analyzing customer reviews, we found out the main shortcomings of the product:
- the adhesive tape with which Schottis blinds are attached to the window sometimes holds poorly and does not resist the wind well;
Tip: if the adhesiveness deteriorates, use regular double-sided tape according to the same principle.
- you cannot wash, wash, dry clean - this will cause the curtains to lose their appearance and not be able to perform their functions;
- a special clamp that regulates the degree of unfolding of the fabric weakly holds the pleated folded;
Tip: If the clip does not secure the pleated tightly enough, use clothespins or hair crabs to block the unfolding.
Despite the disadvantages, the price-quality ratio is absolutely justified, which makes the Ikea product popular in its niche.
Bed box VARDO
If a bed or sofa for sleeping does not have built-in storage, a special drawer will be an excellent addition, allowing you to use the space more efficiently. You can store clothes, bedding or bags inside - the textile lid will protect things from dust.
The size of the boxes is 65x70 cm, available in white and black.
Mounting features
Shottis, like other Ikea products, requires self-assembly. Usually buyers do not have any difficulties with installation. The design of the blinds is very simple: the set consists of an accordion-style canvas, on the top of which there is an adhesive layer for fastening, Velcro to fix the lower part in full deployment and a clip to adjust the degree of window opening.
Before installation, you should wipe the surface of the frame from dust and other contaminants and let it dry. Schottis blinds can be attached to both plastic and wood. If necessary, you can adjust the size by cutting off the excess with ordinary scissors. Next, remove the protective film and attach the sticky edge to the surface. The kit also includes three pairs of Velcro that block the folding; they need to be glued along the edges and in the middle of the lower part of the canvas, and the second pair at the bottom of the window frame, respectively. They help keep the accordion unfolded. You can clearly see the installation process in the video.
How to attach blinds to windows with drilling
Almost all types of blinds are mounted on brackets, so the first thing you need to do is fix the holders. If you want to place curtains in a window opening or attach them to the ceiling, the grooves will have to be installed using self-tapping screws. To do this, you need to mark the surface and make neat holes with a drill.
Installation of blinds with drilling
Important! When fixing curtains to a window sash, you can do without drilling. However, if the structure is too heavy, it is better to secure it thoroughly. Holes for brackets must be made in the corners of the window frame.
Types of pleated Schottis
This popular light filter has one standard size - 190 by 90 cm. In case of discrepancy with the size of the window, you can cut off the excess width or assemble it from several canvases. Color variations allow you to choose the most suitable option for a specific interior.
White Schottis blinds are the most popular among consumers. White tone is universal, suitable in any design. If the room has north-facing windows and you are concerned that the curtains will make the room dark, then this option will leave the light in the room, softening it slightly. A good choice for a nursery, living room, kitchen.
For rooms with south-facing windows, gray Schottis blinds are suitable. They will protect the space from bright lighting. The dark gray option is suitable for a bedroom or recreation room, home theater, as shown in the photo.
A simple and convenient way to replace traditional curtains at a fairly low price has made this product incredibly popular. There is nothing better for temporary use during renovation or for the first floor.
Sunlight doesn't always bring joy to people. Especially early years
The presence of curtains does not always protect the room from the penetration of hot sun
Blinds are universal curtains that are used in the most
Reviews
According to user reviews, the blinds are very convenient both to use and to care for. They can be opened at different levels, fit windows of any width and height - they are quite simple to cut and arrange, and are lightweight.
Since the curtains are made of paper, especially creative people can draw something on them or place them in the nursery for the same purpose. They block light well, which is very important in hot weather or when a person wants to relax during the day. They are not visible from the street side.
Blinds look stylish, beige ones softly transmit light, scattering it, while dark ones almost block it. On the Ikea website or in the catalog you can see interior design options using paper blinds.
Some buyers purchase such blinds for the duration of the renovation, so that later they can be easily and without leaving a trace, but many, according to reviews, still leave their favorite temporary option. This option is ideal for garden and country houses.

Summer is ending, and I’m just ready to write a review about blinds from the IKEA store. )) But, better late than never..
From the manufacturer:
Easy to install on the window, no drilling required. Can be easily cut to required size.
And now I would like to talk in more detail about the installation process.
- We carefully read the instructions, or rather look at the pictures, IKEA is laconic.)
No BEFORE and AFTER photos , where would we be without them..)
The material of the blinds is 100% polyester.
- Easy to install.
- They block the light perfectly (I have my blinds installed on the sunny side).
- They don't turn yellow.
Before purchasing, I read a couple of negative reviews here. I took the risk of buying at my own risk and did not regret it. What more could you want for this price? For me, they are ideal as a budget option!
Glad to be useful to you. Always yours Nyushka.
