Fittings for plastic windows and doors - review of fittings for PVC

Topic: How to choose high-quality plastic windows and doors.
Part 2 – Review of accessories. Dear Readers, if you have not yet read my previous article on choosing a profile system, you can read it here.

We will devote this article to choosing such an important element of your new window (about doors later) as ACCESSORIES...

So let's decide what we expect from her:

3) Reliability of operation;

4) Brands and recommendations.

1. Security: This term means, first of all, “resistance” to hacking. Almost every manufacturer will offer you (most likely) two options - the so-called “basic security” and “burglar-resistant” fittings. Everything is simple here, if you do not store millions of US dollars at home, then basic security will be more than enough. Breaking a window (from the outside) using almost any fittings (provided that all the basic assembly recommendations from the fittings manufacturer are followed) is, I tell you, not an easy task. And if someone sets out to “open up a specific hut,” then even special anti-burglary fittings are unlikely to stop him... But the difference in price for such a window can be quite significant (from 30 to 100 euros per sash!). But since we decided to “get confused” about this, then, in my opinion, the optimal combination of price and quality of “anti-burglary” is implemented in such systems as ROTO, MACO and Siegenia, and in the ROTO line in the best possible way (minimum increase in cost, maximum functionality).

2. Functionality: First of all, we mean different opening positions of the valves (swivel, tilt, micro-ventilation position). We will not go into technical details here; we will make do with recommendations:

a) Avoid “blind” segments as much as possible. You don’t install the window for one day, but the ease of use (for example, washing and ventilation) is obvious!

b) Give preference to tilt-and-turn sashes (the average difference is about 500 - 700 rubles with a rotary sashes), they are more reliable (more in the next section) than just rotary ones.

c) Do not overpay for 4-stage ventilation clamps; limit yourself to a standard micro-ventilator. The fact is that the stroke of a 4-stage “mikrik” is on average 2mm x 4, i.e. from 2mm to 8mm (for comparison on a standard “single-stage”, let’s say Siegenia is 6mm). I very much doubt that you will really feel the difference (air flow) when opening the window 4.6 or 8 mm, but your wallet will! In fact, this is a “left-hand lotion”...

d) Don’t get fooled by installing various supply valves and other nonsense. Understand that this is, first of all, a violation of the integrity of the structure, and the benefits obtained from the use of such “devices” are very doubtful (a pure drain of money).

3. Reliability of operation: As in the previous article, I repeat that there are practically no “bad” fitting systems (as well as profile ones). Most of them are actually produced in Germany and Europe, but Polish and Russian “licensed” analogues are not much inferior to them. The only thing I would advise is to be careful when choosing Turkish (for example Vorne or TTS) and Chinese (for example GQ) systems, they are somehow not very good... Next, we’ll also move on to the recommendations:

a) Make sure that your products will be equipped with false opening blockers (many manufacturers neglect them), in addition to the main purpose (blocking the “falling out” of the sash while simultaneously opening in a turn and tilt), on many systems (for example ROTO and MACO) it also has the function of protection against “sagging”.

b) Give preference to swing-and-turn sashes (versus pivoting ones). There are two points here - in swing doors, as a rule, there is no locking mechanism on the “hinged” side - accordingly, there is no clamp. To eliminate this drawback, either “hidden” clamps. So - hidden clamps on none of the fitting systems known to me DO NOT WORK as they should (especially on Vorne, Siegenia and ROTO), and external ones greatly spoil the aesthetic appearance of the product. In addition, due to a technical feature, on almost all fittings, a blowing effect occurs in the upper hinge corner (accordingly, the cold “drains” over the entire window), due to pinching one of the sealing rubber contours on the sash. On tilt-and-turn sashes (if they are properly “tied”), both of these moments are eliminated automatically, due to the presence of locking elements along the “hinge” segment (in the gruzanul – yes!).

c) Do not order (if possible) sashes wider than 800mm. and above 1500mm, since not a single fitting system will insure you against “sagging” with such dimensions (no matter what the manufacturers say).

d) In addition, do not forget that there are “noisy” and “silent” fittings. For example, WINKHAUS, Siegenia and GU, during operation, emit characteristic clicks and clangs - this is normal for them. At almost the same price, MACO and ROTO, for example, work “smoother” and almost silently.

4. Brands and recommendations: Almost every system has both its advantages and disadvantages. Below are the top most successful ones, in my opinion:

1) MACO – ideal combination of price and quality, perfectly adjustable, quiet.

2) ROTO - excellent anti-burglary characteristics, not expensive.

3) Siegenia - simple and reliable, a little noisy, but with proper care it will not let you down.

4) Wink Haus – “antique”, simple and reliable, in my opinion, somewhat outdated.

5) GU – not expensive, relatively reliable.

The rest of the systems (not counting China) are approximately at the same level...

It is important to understand that the quality of your window or door (we’ll talk about door hardware systems separately another time) depends not only on the quality of materials (profiles, fittings, etc.), but also to a huge extent on the quality and compliance with assembly standards products by the manufacturer. It is important to first “break through” the reputation of the company you decide to contact, since information resources are abundant today...

I plan to devote the next part of the section on plastic windows and doors to the choice of fillings (glazed windows). Follow the publications...

We kindly request, dear readers! If the presented material turned out to be really interesting for you, or, on the contrary, seems absolutely useless to you, leave your comments so that I can “work on the mistakes.”

The quality of Winkhaus fittings has been proven over the years

Company Aug. Winkhaus GmbH & Co. KG is one of the leading manufacturers of window fitting systems. The company's customers all over the world value the versatile products and services with which Winkhaus has set the standards for the development of the window industry since the very beginning of its activities.

At the origins of the successful family business is August Winkhaus, who opened a consignment store selling padlocks in 1854. The continuation of the store's activities was the Winkhaus trading company with its own production workshop. The 160-year history of the Winkhaus company, interesting, dynamic and successful, begins here.

Today the company is led by the 5th generation of company founders – Sophie and Tilman Winkhouse. The Winkhaus group includes 5 branches in Germany and 8 subsidiaries outside the country. Winkhaus is the largest manufacturer of accessories on the international market. Over 160 years of successful operation, the company is proud of its impeccable reputation.

What is the best hardware for a plastic window?

What are the principles for choosing fittings for plastic windows?

In our analysis we will proceed from the following premises:

1. In reality, fittings from the most prestigious and reputable brands differ in cost from fittings from “second-tier” brands (Turkish, Chinese with German brand names, etc.) by 300-400 rubles. This is the cost of that bottle of vodka, which you will have to give to a master every six months so that he can “correct” your windows.

Moreover, this difference is constantly decreasing. The cost of labor in Asian countries is growing; in terms of energy consumption and hardware and administrative costs, they are already ahead of the West.

Conclusion: saving on accessories is stupid. As the British say, “...we are not rich enough to buy cheap things.” We put the price criterion in last place in importance.

Window fittings production line in Turkey

Despite the assurances that the branches will be certified at the parent enterprises, and that Western specialists will control the technical processes, this is hard to believe.

Conclusion: you need to buy accessories from those manufacturers about whom it is known for certain that they did not move their production to other countries. Or at least those who were actually able to establish quality control of their products in Russia, China, etc.

3. It is naive to assume that hardware products from leading German and Austrian manufacturers differ greatly in quality from each other. It cannot be that two enterprises operate in neighboring cities, sell their products in the same market and at the same time do not exchange experience or copy what a competitor offers.

Conclusion: the consumer’s choice can only be influenced by nuances determined by the traditions of the hardware manufacturer, its experience in a particular market, and other seemingly minor points.

The basis is a full set of functions expected from a tilt-and-turn window, beautiful appearance, durability, ease of adjustment and operation - this is inherent in the products of all leading manufacturers.

It is these nuances that we will pay attention to.

Recommendations

The choice of fittings for windows should be approached responsibly, since the quality and durability of the window structure depends on them. Window fittings must be made of high-quality material, ensuring its reliability and durability, resistance to mechanical damage and temperature changes. It is also worth paying attention to ease of use, aesthetics and comfort. High-quality fittings are characterized by wear resistance and non-corrosion. To care for metal parts, use special products and never use vegetable oil!

Accessories for Rublyovka

Fittings made in Germany Siegenia-Aubi

The Russian luxury buyer rarely lives in an apartment building. As a rule - in a cottage. For furnishing windows in a prestigious home, experts recommend Siegenia-Aubi fittings.

The main argument: the high flexibility of this system: it can be equipped with a window of the most complex shape: triangular, oval, etc. It’s no secret that cottages are often built according to individual and sometimes very bizarre designs.

Other advantages of this fittings: it is produced exclusively in Germany; its quality is impeccable. It is durable, although it requires service (lubrication) approximately every six months. But I think this is not a problem for the owner of the cottage.

Many parts for the left and right wings are interchangeable - it will be more difficult for installers to blame their problems on the fact that “now there is no such thing in the warehouse, we will come and change it later, but for now we will put this one in.” Yes, and planned repairs will be painless.

Siegenia-Aubi fittings are ideal for luxury developments

For those who are concerned about security, Siegenia-Aubi is among the most difficult fittings to crack: its “defensive” elements can withstand a record load of 1.5 tons (usually this figure does not exceed 600 kg).

And for those who are afraid of drafts, we can inform you that the design has seven pressure points on the sash to the frame instead of the standard five.

In terms of price, Siegenia-Aubi is in the higher segment, but, let’s say, this is not the most expensive fittings on the Russian market. There are also more expensive ones, and in domestic prices, quality and price exist as if in different dimensions, without touching each other.

Summary: Siegenia-Aubi is No. 1 for a wealthy Russian who wants to equip the windows of his cottage with good fittings.

Window seal

The main criterion that determines the quality of window structures is the resistance to penetration of external influences into the room. The quality of the seal for plastic windows significantly determines the tightness of the connection to the window sash in the frame, and hence the presence of window ventilation. A poor-quality seal can easily lead to cold and drafts in the apartment, fogging and icing of the window.

We use sealants from SCHEGEL (Germany). The Schlegel brand is widely known in Europe and other parts of the world as a reliable supplier of door and window components. Schlegel seals differ from the most common rubber seals (EPDM, TPE, PVC, etc.) primarily in their excellent thermal and physical properties, which are achieved through the use of polyurethane in the seal structure.

SEALERS SCHLEGEL (GERMANY) The internal porous structure of the Schlegel seal consists of highly elastic polyurethane - a complex 5-component material, with special additives, providing high elasticity and durability for more than 20 years. Schlegel seals have low deformation force and excellent ability to restore their shape (residual deformation less than 15%) down to critically low temperatures -50C - 60C. Accordingly, there is no blowing/freezing along the sash in winter.

The high degree of elasticity of the material ensures better pressing of the sash and a larger contact patch between the frame and the sash on the vestibule. This provides an additional opportunity to seal large gaps.

  • Does not lose elasticity at low temperatures down to -60C
  • Has high restorative ability
  • Does not require lubrication or maintenance throughout its entire service life
  • Gives the effect of soft and tight closing of the window sash
  • Built-in fiberglass thread - prevents compression or stretching

For the normal elite

Austrian fittings MACO INVISIBLE

But our wealthy compatriot spends the second half of his day in his prestigious office. And he can live not in a cottage, but in an elite high-rise building - a settlement, as they now say.

Without at all detracting from the advantages of Siegenia-Aubi, for such options (prestigious office, settlement), experts often recommend fittings from the Austrian company MASO.

Reason: a large set of different kinds of options that will ensure a comfortable stay in a room with windows equipped with such fittings.

Its advantages:

  • Easy closing function
  • Up to six degrees of burglary protection
  • Final wax coating of parts providing increased anti-corrosion resistance
  • Presentable appearance
  • All kinds of limiters, protection against impact on the jamb, micro-lifting of the sash when closing, multi-position designs for ventilation

All MACO fittings are produced at two factories in Austria.

Summary: MASO fittings are No. 1 for office premises and prestigious apartment buildings. In terms of price characteristics, it occupies one of the first positions. But she's worth it!

Micro ventilation function

Micro-ventilation (1st position) - when you turn the sash handle 45 degrees upward, the sash is pressed away from the frame of the window block by 2-3 mm along the entire perimeter.

WINKHAUS microventilation provides an influx of fresh street air and its further natural circulation, which prevents condensation from forming on the surfaces of glass and windows. This is an effective solution for ventilation during the cold season.

When viewed from the street, a window opened in microventilation mode gives the impression that it is tightly closed. This illusion significantly reduces the likelihood of penetration into the premises.

For the middle class

Winkhaus fittings - German brand

What should an average city dweller, let's say, a skilled worker with a good salary, a small entrepreneur, a manager who is valued at work, an official, do, if he wants to install a window with reliable, but not too expensive fittings in his apartment?

Answer: Winkhaus. The oldest hardware company produces products for every taste and budget - from very prestigious to quite budget ones. What speaks in its favor is that, according to expert estimates, it is the only one that was able to establish production in Russia, but according to German standards.

There are modifications of Winkhaus proPilot , which are cheaper in price than Turkish models, but higher in quality and functionality. When analyzing the market, we found enterprises that are ready to supply Winkhaus fittings in bulk for 600 rubles. It is clear that these are some basic configurations with a minimum set of options, but this is one and a half times cheaper than Turkish fittings!

Not to mention durability. There are testimonies of people who operated Winkhaus for ten years without service. And they would have used it longer if the window had not broken.

Perhaps Winkhaus is inferior to Siegenia-Aubi in terms of elasticity and MASO - in terms of softness and number of options. But installing a plastic window and forgetting about it for 10 years means a lot in domestic conditions!

Summary: WinkHaus is No. 1 for a person with average capabilities. Moreover, if these capabilities continue to grow, then a person will simply need to switch from one Winkhaus model to another: from proPilot to autoPilot, and then, as ultra-modern modifications of ActivPilot are introduced into the domestic market, one can safely switch to them.

For those who don't have to choose

Turkish fittings Kale

But not everyone in Russia enjoys the right to choose.

What happens if, say, the authorities of a large city decide to resettle pensioners from a depressed central area somewhere on the outskirts, and open shopping and entertainment complexes in the center? And he transfers the order for the construction of a new microdistrict “for grandmothers and grandchildren” to some Turkish construction company? And she, in turn, orders accessories from someone who is closer, who is related?

In most cases, Kale Kilit turns out to be “closer and dearer”. Or simply Kale, as it is already commonly called in the vast expanses of 1/6 of the land. Its fittings are simple and reliable. Cheap. It is easy to install. And it was done quite conscientiously. It may not have a multi-position micro-ventilation option, but it won’t draft like a chimney on blizzard February evenings.

Summary: Kale is #1 for those who don't have to choose. It goes not only to new buildings. Currently, we are capturing the widest market, cooperating with many companies producing profiles and installing them throughout Russia.

And don't be afraid of this! If you are a modest Soviet pensioner and are not afraid that your diamond necklace with pearl pendants will be taken from your home, then you do not need fittings with six degrees of protection. And Kale has everything else!

Market outsiders

Don’t be surprised that many giants of the hardware market were not included in our rating. Specifically ROTO. To reinterpret a well-known phrase, we can say that “You may be a major, but, alas, you must know the market.”

ROTO fittings - for domestic consumers, produced in Russia

Obviously, the famous company overdid it, opening, in the pursuit of profitability, a dozen factories in all parts of the world. Including in China and Russia. And having failed to establish control over the quality of products produced in the branches.

As a result, it is impossible to buy a real ROTO in the Russian Federation, and there are such reviews about Chinese and domestic crafts that it is embarrassing to even remember.

In addition, when the author of these lines tried to find out the price of the company’s products, the remaining unknown manager quoted an amount 1.5 times greater than the cost of a purebred German Siegenia. Perhaps many copywriters suffer from excessive suspiciousness, but still, it seems that this is not entirely the case. This is more like a case where they are trying to take the consumer for a sucker.

“Personnel decides everything!” - Grandfather Stalin used to say. And he was right. One such response from one such manager can cost the company its place in the market.

Varieties

The oldest brand on the market since 1854, and for a century and a half it has been confirming its leadership in the quality and reliability of its products. Winkhaus fittings are the key to comfortable operation of PVC windows. There are cases when the double-glazed window already needed to be replaced, but the German mechanism worked as well as on the day of installation.

Winkhaus fittings are presented in various modifications:

  • - for rectangular windows;
  • — for large double-glazed windows on verandas, terraces, in country houses and modern business centers;
  • - for massive double-glazed windows, sliding doorways, office partitions, etc.

Customers can choose the option for their needs and enjoy the design aesthetics along with the flawless functionality of the mechanisms.
