Large round windows – maximum illumination of the house

Home » Plastic windows » Large round windows – maximum illumination of the house

Round plastic windows can be used in any building. Often small round or oval-shaped windows are installed in attics or attic floors. Such a window is most harmoniously combined with a vaulted roof: it will highlight its shape and make the desired accent. However, windows of non-standard shape can be large in size; they look original in rooms and are used in buildings whose design is non-standard. You can find such structures in basements as basement windows.

Round PVC windows can become an original element of the interior; they are actively used as partitions between rooms to delimit space. They can be installed in the bathrooms of private houses, making the room brighter and more spacious. The window is usually installed at a high height.

Types of round windows

A round PVC window can have different designs, depending on the opening method and installation location.

The following types of round windows are distinguished:

The minimum diameter of round windows is 700 mm

Maximum diameter of a plastic window 2000 mm

Blind (non-opening) window. If you decide to choose a model without active sashes, you must take into account that blind structures can only be washed from the reverse side.

Window with an opening sash. Such windows allow you to ventilate rooms and, thanks to the additional lintel, have increased rigidity. However, during operation it is not always convenient to lower or raise the active sash. Also, with a large structure, it may be difficult to access the entire outer part of the glass unit when washing windows.

Semi-circular hinged door system. This round window functions almost the same as a regular rectangular model. The number of active sashes is determined by the customer. It is possible to integrate rectangular vents into a round structure. It should be taken into account that a large number of vertical or horizontal imposts reduces the light transmittance of windows. If there is an insufficient number of active sashes and their small sizes, access to the outer part of the double-glazed windows is difficult.

Mid-hung round window. The sash is located inside the structure and can open in any direction, even at an angle. A convenient model that allows you to easily ventilate the premises and wash the double-glazed windows. Thanks to the improved fittings, even large doors move easily when opened. Such models provide ideal air circulation when ventilating rooms.

Fixed windows

It is used most often because it is the most affordable, does not cause difficulties in manufacturing, and transmits light well. But blind windows cannot be the only ones, since ventilation must be ensured. Blind models are well suited for use as decorative structures indoors or sources of additional light.

With opening frames

There may be two or one, depending on the design. Such windows are usually installed on a vertical or horizontal profile. With the help of such a window you can not only make the room bright enough, but also effectively ventilate it. The sash can open, like the standard design, with a ventilation mode or open completely.

With rotating doors

It opens inwards and is arranged in a transom type. The sash of such a window does not swing open, but rotates around its axis, which allows you to save space and conveniently open the window in rooms where there is not enough space for this. This opening system is well suited for medium-sized window structures.

The weight of the window should not exceed 80 kg, since its suspension is often not able to support heavy structures. It is worth noting that this type of opening is not suitable for small windows, since they will have a small radius of rotation, which is why they cannot open.

Mid-hung structures

They are capable of opening along a vertical or horizontal axis, rotating 180 degrees. The sash is attached at two points, so you don’t have to think about weight restrictions. In order to make round windows with this type of opening safe, they are equipped with special braking elements.

Blitz survey: Do you have plastic windows installed in your home?

Thanks to this, you can lock the sash in the desired position, it will not move on its own and will not be able to slam shut from the wind. The diameter of such windows can be from minimal to 2 meters. These are practically the maximum allowable dimensions for round windows. Opening round windows this way is the most practical option. They are not only easy to use, but also easy to maintain. The open sash allows you to reach any part of the structure and wash it.

What requirements should you pay attention to?

It is almost impossible to find oval or round windows in finished form, since they are produced exclusively to order. Not all companies producing PVC profiles do this, so before purchasing you need to familiarize yourself with the features of product production.

The desired profile shape is obtained by heat treatment of the plastic. Any round window consists of two parts: the membrane of a round window not only gives rigidity to the structure, but is also an important technological process. A high-quality window cannot have a radius of less than 40 cm, otherwise the profile will be deformed. The opening structure should not be less than 50 cm. When choosing a manufacturer, pay attention to the quality of the plastic: it should not be rough or yellow. Study the standard products, after which you can place an order. It is difficult to take measurements, so it is better to entrust them to a professional.

Round PVC windows available in the market today are extremely elegant and stylish, making them attractive even to the most hardened aesthetes. Moreover, such unusual windows provide endless decorative possibilities and will harmoniously fit into any interior, including non-standard and small-sized rooms, reports the WINDOWS MEDIA portal.

Who said that a window can only have corners? Round windows are an exception in construction, but they make a lasting impression not only inside the building, but also outside. They create a fantasy, surreal atmosphere, divorced from reality.

Disadvantages of round systems

Minuses

The main disadvantage of the round design, in comparison with traditional rectangular analogues, is the lack of reinforcing reinforcement.

The temperature at which PVC softens to a plastic state differs significantly from that for metal. Therefore, it is impossible to bend polyvinyl chloride reinforced with an iron profile. It will also not work to install a ready-made radius element of additional rigidity into an already formed part.

Thus, all the loads are taken by the plastic, which is not critical for relatively small blocks, but will have consequences as the size increases. The outer frame is fixed in the opening and is practically not subject to any critical loads. But the doors of opening structures can become deformed, which in turn will lead to loss of tightness.

It is still possible to further strengthen the round plastic block.
This is a fairly expensive technology, and instead of metal, a composite polymer is used as reinforcement. Related articles:

Pros and cons of using

If you want to create practical, unusual round window openings for home decoration, then it is important to know the main features and advantages of this option. So, the positive aspects include the following factors:

But there are also important disadvantages that must be taken into account.

The main disadvantage of using such elements is the limited number of options. Today, profiles of this shape are produced in limited quantities in size and diameter. Such windows cannot be large, which can negatively affect the appearance of a private home. At the same time, exposure to sunlight will also be minimal, which can create unpleasant living conditions indoors.

Frame material

Tree

Round glazing made of wood is considered a classic option. At the same time, it is from this material that window blocks are made in expensive mansions made in the appropriate style.

Now two manufacturing technologies are used: a set of frames made of lamellas (bent laminated timber); assembly of a circle from segments cut from wide rectangular blanks. The first method requires special equipment and takes a lot of time.

In addition, strict adherence to the technology is important, and with the slightest violation, there is a high probability of frame deformation in the future. Therefore, the second method is more often used. A structure glued together from segments better retains its shape throughout its service life, and modern methods of joining and finishing wood make the joints almost invisible.

Advantages of wooden windows:

pros

Wood is a natural, environmentally friendly material. The main thing is not to deprive it of this property by using varnishes and impregnations of dubious quality.

The service life, depending on the breed, is at least 30 years. Products made of oak or larch – up to 100 years

High degree of noise absorption and thermal insulation

Wood requires periodic renewal of the paintwork. For budget products this period is about seven years; more expensive premium mixtures will last 25 years or more.

Plastic

The most popular option, due to the well-known practicality of plastic, relatively affordable cost and ease of manufacture. The production technology of round PVC windows consists of preliminary heat treatment of the profile, after which it is given the appropriate shape. The actual heating is carried out in a special chamber. The bending radius is calculated in advance, a template is created, according to which the frame circumference is formed.

Blitz survey: Which plastic windows are better: German or Russian?

After cooling, the plastic retains the forum and all the positive properties characteristic of this material:

pros

Low sound transmission

High energy efficiency

Service life more than 50 years

The block is quite sealed

PVC is resistant to weather conditions, changes in temperature and humidity, as well as UV radiation

Aluminum

One of the properties of aluminum is high thermal conductivity. Because of this feature, the most common is the so-called cold aluminum glazing. This type of glazing is relevant in rooms where energy efficiency is of secondary importance, for example, on unheated balconies or loggias.

The possibility of producing warm aluminum structures also exists. To do this, they use complex profile systems in which metal elements are separated by a special thermal insert - a polymer with low thermal conductivity.

Profiles for round aluminum windows, both cold and warm, are made on profile bending machines. A flat workpiece is passed through rollers several times, deforming it in a given direction. The procedure is repeated until the part takes the required shape.

The positive aspects of aluminum windows:

pros

Maximum service life among all available materials (100 years or more)

Aesthetic appeal of glazing on a building façade

The weight of aluminum blocks is less than that of plastic or wooden models. At the same time, the design is characterized by high mechanical strength, which makes its use most preferable if the block will be subject to strong wind loads

The main disadvantage is the relatively high cost, which can be twice as high as that of plastic analogues. In addition, even with warm aluminum, heat loss will be higher than with plastic or wood.

Arched windows: a stylish solution for a modern home

By the external design, type and number of windows, one can judge not only about the house - the time of its construction, design style and interior furnishings, but also about its owner - his tastes, habits and well-being.

The unusual shape of windows is a distinctive feature of each house - its interior and exterior. Round, triangular, diamond-shaped, asymmetrical or polygonal windows are a kind of “highlight”, a design solution that is not always appropriate everywhere and can actually be implemented in the project. But there is still a worthy alternative to ordinary rectangular structures - arched windows, which will perfectly highlight the facade of the house and fit into the interior decoration.

A little history

The concept of arched windows and arched structures first appeared in Ancient Rome. The architects of that time understood: in order to increase the space between the columns and light transmittance, it was necessary to use not beams to cover the opening, but arches rising to the top of the structure in the form of a semicircle. This design of space looks more solemn and majestic, which is why ancient palaces were decorated with numerous arched openings and windows.

In the Middle Ages, arched windows were especially popular in the construction of temples. The upper rounded part became pointed, resembling a dome. Such arches are called Gothic or pointed. Similar designs are also used in modern construction, when it is necessary to emphasize the mystery of the Gothic style.

Arched windows in the countries of the East received a particularly complex and sophisticated form - they repeated the outlines of minarets and were used in the construction of mosques and palaces.

In modern housing construction, arched windows have become especially popular: they not only transmit light well and visually enlarge the space, but also make an ordinary house bright, original and attractive.

Modern materials

Modern arched windows repeat traditional forms using new, technologically advanced materials - PVC, aluminum, wood and others. In private housing construction, plastic and wood are most often used.

Plastic arched windows in their production are no different from standard rectangular openings. Round arches are made from the same profile and double-glazed windows; they also have heat, sound and noise insulating properties, and are used for glazing residential buildings.

Wooden arched windows are another popular type of glazing. Modern methods of wood processing, while maintaining its environmental friendliness and at the same time significantly extending its service life, allow the use of wooden windows on a par with PVC window structures.

For the production of wooden arched structures, larch, pine or oak are most often used. During the processing process, the wood is coated with antiseptic compounds, special paints, varnishes and impregnations that protect the wood from temperature changes, humidity and UV rays.

Circle window sizes

Due to the peculiarities of manufacturing and operation, the dimensions of round windows differ from the dimensions of rectangular windows. This parameter is also influenced by the material of manufacture.

Round window sizes (min/max):

Window material PVC Tree Aluminum
Max. size with flaps (mm) 4600 3500 4000
Min. size with flaps (mm) 1080 1000 900
Min. size with fixed doors (mm) 800 500 700
Max. size with fixed doors (mm) 2000 1800 3000

Since manufacturers work with different types of profiles and types of wood, the maximum and minimum diameters of round windows may differ.

Due to the existence of restrictions on the size of these products, a round window in a brick wall or concrete plane must be designed during the construction phase of the building. After all, adapting the size of the opening will be too difficult or completely impossible.

Round products are non-standard glazing, so when manufacturing them it is necessary to take into account a number of requirements and restrictions. Such windows are made only from wooden (pine, larch, oak) and plastic profiles (Rehau and KBE).

With a diameter of less than 1000 mm, but more than 520 mm, only one sash of the structure can open; to make both sash openable, two semicircular windows should be installed, docked together. You can get more accurate information by calling a technical specialist.

Circle magic

The circle is a mythological symbol of harmony. Oval shapes are better for people, both spatially and in terms of perception, because in nature there are very few objects that are square in shape or formed entirely from straight lines. The circle, as an ideally shaped figure, is associated with improvement and completeness.

Psychologists assure that a person who prefers round windows is sincerely interested in good, warm interpersonal relationships. For him, the highest value is people and their well-being.

The magical effect of the circle, as practice shows, is expressed in strengthening relationships, both in the work team and in the family, bringing warmth and comfort, love and harmony into the room. That is why round windows work best in rooms that are characterized by large crowds of people - in the kitchen, living room, nursery, and also in banquet halls.

Such windows make the interior of the room brighter, lighter and more memorable. Round windows will fit perfectly into the atmosphere of geometrically strict interiors, but will be especially good for marine-style rooms. To do this, it is enough to install several small windows next to each other so that an ordinary home space turns into a ship's cabin.

How to make round PVC windows beautiful

If desired, round windows made of PVC can be made unusual, both in the frame of the structure and in the glass. In this case, using lamination technology, the frames can be given a color different from standard white, and the glass can be decorated with a layout that divides the light-transmitting fabric into bizarrely shaped zones, or with a stained glass pattern.

Let's take a closer look at what each method is.

Lamination

The use of this technology in relation to a window, regardless of its shape, involves applying a special laminating film to the frame of the structure. The range of shades of such a film is simply huge, and therefore it is not difficult to give the window frame any color that the customer wishes - it all depends on the price of the issue, because in this case the cost of the final product increases by 10-20%, depending on a number of factors.

Today, brown and black plastic windows are very popular, as well as windows finished in wood, preserving the structure of various tree species.

Layout

Layout is the name given to the strips that divide the window glass into zones that form a specific composition. The strips can be applied in the form of a grid, diamonds, or intricate divisions (see the figure below) and installed both inside the double-glazed window and on top of the glass, from the outside. There are any colors, but the gold layout looks especially luxurious.

Stained glass drawing

Windows with stained glass have been held in high esteem at all times - since manual labor was used to make the design on the glass. Such products look expensive and are not suitable for all homes, because there may be a clear dissonance between a luxurious window and a modest building.

Materials and their combinations

Round wooden windows are a classic design option. Natural material harmonizes perfectly with almost any interior style. To save money, you can use models made of MDF or chipboard: they look the same in appearance, but are cheaper.

Stained glass windows are bright and unusual, so they instantly attract attention. They are suitable for Victorian or fusion style interiors. But this element is also appropriate in modern design, although it requires careful elaboration of the design idea.

Plastic is still the leader when choosing material for window frames. It is practical, cheap and environmentally friendly. Plastic frames do not have to be white - they can be painted any shade.

The window frame, designed in the form of bookshelves, looks unusual. Its edge is a wide strip separated by partitions. You can store books, textiles or original figurines on them.

Decoration of the window space

Windows will look much better if you carefully think through all the design details - external and internal, and draw up a plan for the location of structures and elements that will complement the window. Platbands play an important role, giving it a finished look.

To frame the window from the outside, materials that are resistant to various weather conditions are chosen, and the top is covered with a special protective compound. Platbands are chosen taking into account the material and the general style of knowledge. For brick houses, plastic is more suitable; in a wooden house, it would be more logical to make platbands from wood, which you must remember to periodically care for by covering it with a special primer. Platbands can have decorative elements in the form of carvings and figured inserts.

Plastic trims are easier to maintain; they just need to be wiped clean from dust.

Implementation of the idea

First there was a drawing by hand, the size was determined by eye and based on the remainder of a sheet of moisture-resistant plywood 500x1500 mm, thickness 15 mm.
Let's start implementing the idea. We cut out circles (rings) from plywood for the base of the frame and slightly smaller ones for the door. From two more rings we make the basis for the landing flange, to which we screw a strip of galvanized steel sheet, twisted into a cylinder without a bottom.

We glue the frame ring with two flange rings, additionally using self-tapping screws around the perimeter. We make the door a little smaller than the frame, and instead of glass we use transparent plexiglass from old stock. We fasten it with self-tapping screws from the inside. We fasten the door to one furniture hinge. I decided to make it from above, so that the window would open slightly from the bottom up, in case of slanting rains.

A simple aluminum corner and a galvanized 6x50 bolt are responsible for fixing the door. The corner must be movable, it is secured using the same furniture hinge. The first hole in the corner secures the door in a position tightly pressed to the frame. The other two holes are used for fixing in the middle and maximum open position for ventilation. For some kind of tightness, I glued a door seal in the form of a D-profile around the door.

The tin flange was bent to fit, secured with rivets and screwed with self-tapping screws with a press washer to the plywood flange. It has a depth of about 30 cm, designed taking into account the insulation of the wall with foam plastic 10 cm thick. The second one will be inserted from the inside, after installing the hatch window. Then the entire structure was disassembled and impregnated with Tikkurila Valtti antiseptic impregnation (Valti Primer) and after drying, painted with Valtti Color façade glaze. Graphite color looks good. It took about 4 hours to assemble, 1 hour to install the scaffolding and about an hour to knock out a hole in the wall (30 cm gas silicate block).

Curtains for windows in the form of a circle

Protection from excess street light and prying eyes, in the case of round windows, requires a slightly different approach than when designing conventional rectangular structures. In some cases, you can do without curtains, for example, when it comes to opaque glazing or when installing stained glass models.

Common types of curtains for decorating round windows:

  • Pleated blinds . Affordable and easy to install option. In addition, in the modern market it is not difficult to find a suitable color and texture. To purchase a kit that matches the frame specifications, you will need a frame template. It’s not difficult to do it yourself, but it’s better to turn to specialists - order blinds and installation. Pleated fabrics are perfect for both round and semicircular designs. Therefore, if it is necessary to decorate the top of an arched window, such blinds can be considered.
  • Regular blinds . A type of design that is more complex to manufacture and install. The rounded shape of the frame and non-standard mounting hardware significantly increase the cost. However, the result is durable and practical. Traditional blinds are easy to use, functional and allow you to control the amount of ambient light.
  • Straight curtains . The least common option for round windows, and so that it does not spoil the overall appearance, it is better to approach the issue creatively. For example, choose unusual, beautiful fittings, use an alternative method of fixing it to the cornice, or buy an arched cornice.

For rooms decorated in a classic style, lambrequins are suitable.

This solution is quite simple to implement, and you probably won’t need to call a specialist. In addition, with the help of a lambrequin it is easy to design any diameter, which allows it to be used even for large openings.

Round windows on the facade and in the interior

There is no fundamental difference in where to install such a window block, but some options are more preferable:

  • On the gable or attic. A glazing element at the top of the building will look best under a vaulted roof. With this arrangement, the shape of the roof is emphasized and the decoration of the facade takes on a complete look. At the same time, the issue of natural lighting in the attic space or attic room is resolved.

  • Ground floor. The implementation of glazing in basements or semi-basements with small round windows is a fairly common option. This not only improves the overall appearance of the facade, but also makes these rooms brighter during the day.

  • In the interior walls. Partitions between rooms are usually glazed with solid-type products without sashes, imposts or sashes. This has a beneficial effect on the interior, making adjacent rooms more comfortable and brighter.

Another fairly popular place to install round blocks is the bathroom. A window with a layout, glazed with opaque or frosted glass, would be relevant here. If the interior and facade design allows, you can install a stained glass window.

Average prices

The cost of the design depends on the type of profile, double-glazed window, dimensions, type of opening, complexity of manufacturing and brand of the manufacturer.

For PVC products

The complexity of the manufacturing process increases the cost of structures. Average price for round windows:

  1. Deaf - from 7,500 rubles to 17,300 rubles.
  2. With one leaf - from 22,500 rubles to 26,500 rubles.

The price usually includes delivery of the product.

For specialist services

Installation of the structure costs about 25-30% of the cost of the product . Installation of a blind door will cost from 2,000 rubles to 4,000 rubles, single-leaf from 4,500 rubles to 6,000 rubles, depending on the size.

Round plastic windows

These models are the most popular due to their good performance and ease of use. Round plastic windows are made using thermal bending technology. In a special chamber, the profiles are heated and then, using pre-prepared templates, they are given the desired shape on a table with a perfectly smooth surface. Frozen plastic does not straighten and retains its previous properties.

Features by room type

Usually, a bay window is made in the kitchen to increase the functional space. The favorite formats are: a kitchen combined with a living room or a small winter garden.

Bay window in the kitchen

The ledge is furnished as a dining room or compact living room. Interior designers often add a sofa with the same geometric shape. A more expensive zoning option is an individual set along the bay window walls. Together with natural light, these formats create a unique atmosphere.

Bay window in the bedroom

A bed is installed in the geometric part of the private room, with the headboard by the window. Symmetrical bedside tables fit perfectly on the sides. The space above them is sometimes (if there are no windows) reserved for shelves.

Bay window in the living room

The classic option is to fill a geometric space with a large sofa and a coffee table. When the room has thick curtains, a TV is placed opposite. A rarer way to use meters with a bay window in the living room is in the winter garden.

Bay window in a children's bedroom

There are a lot of fantasies here: they place a children’s tent and a play castle with stairs and towers, they make beds of extraordinary shapes (to match the walls) to order. In a child's room, it is extremely important to take care of the safety of panoramic glazing. Particular attention is paid to the possibility/impossibility of opening windows.

In the bay window area it is possible to equip a cornice and a computer desk, a home theater, and a cosmetic table. Then, the windows are complemented with curtains for the convenience of being in this area.
