For which buildings and premises is it suitable?

Since the 1990s, standard plastic windows began to be installed en masse in homes. This made it possible to significantly reduce the level of heat loss in buildings. When replacing with energy-saving designs, there is an effect, but not as significant.

Such structures should be installed if the glazing area of ​​the house is at least 40%. In multi-storey glass buildings using heat-saving spraying, you can save up to 20% of heat.

The effectiveness of using energy-saving windows will also be extremely low if the general condition of the house does not meet thermal insulation standards. This option is suitable for premises where everything has already been provided for in terms of energy saving (the building’s energy efficiency class is not lower than B+).

In apartment buildings with central heating, it is effective to install “warm” windows on the north side. They are also useful if the building has heat problems.

In an individual house, such designs will save heating costs.

The tightness of an energy-saving window prevents outside air from entering the room. To maintain the required level of humidity and a favorable microclimate, you need a good ventilation system.

- a two-chamber standard double-glazed window with ordinary glass and having a thickness of 32 mm (4m?-8-4m?-8-4m?), has a coefficient R? equal to 0.49 m2°C/W. If you install heat-saving glass in it, the parameter rises to 0.88 m2°C/W.


Notes on formulas:

4m? - means glass having a thickness of 4 mm, grade M1;

numbers 16 and 8 are the width of the spacer frame.

That is, instead of a double-chamber 32 mm double-glazed window, you can install a single-chamber 24 mm with low-emissivity glass. Moreover, the weight of the structure will decrease by about 10 kg per 1 sq. meter.

The only disadvantage of such a replacement may be sound insulation, since sprayed glass dampens sounds, just like regular glass. The difference in sound insulation will be 24 dB. versus 37 dB. for three glasses.

Why are some types of energy-saving glass impossible to distinguish?

The best way to determine the presence of special glass is to use all three methods. There are serious reasons for this.

— Determining an energy-saving double-glazed window by the color of the flame does not give a 100% accurate result

Depending on the type of spraying and its functional features, the color of the flame may differ slightly and is indistinguishable to the eye. In particular, during the experiment it was not possible to determine multifunctional double-glazed windows by the color of the flame.

— Checking with a detector indicates the presence of coating, but does not determine the type

The second method of identifying an energy-saving coating, although more accurate, is not specific. In addition, special devices for assessing the presence of energy-saving glass are not sold in regular stores. The third method does not give an answer about the type of double-glazed window, but can give an assessment of its properties. To do this, it is enough to know the temperature outside and have a heat map of the window opening obtained using a thermal imager. A real assessment of efficiency is the advantage of using a thermal imager (compared to assessing the presence of a metal layer on glass).

Varieties, method of determining energy-saving double-glazed windows

Most often, there is air between the glasses of a simple double-glazed window. The energy-saving package is filled with inert gas; most often it is argon. Thanks to this technology, the glass does not freeze or fog up when there is a difference in temperature outside and inside the room.

When choosing a design, carefully study the markings. A regular window is designated by the following combination: 4-16-3, a double-glazed window with energy-saving glass is designated as 4-16 Ar-4I. The last letter indicates that a special coating has been applied to the glass. The combination Ar indicates the presence of argon between the glasses. Installing such glass can significantly save money, since a single-chamber energy-saving kit is an analogue of a three-chamber plastic window. What is a double-glazed window with energy-saving glass?

Spraying has no effect on convection. But filling the cavity between the glasses with argon, which is practiced when assembling energy-saving double-glazed windows, can reduce heat loss due to convection by 10-12%. The effect is associated with the higher viscosity of argon compared to air, as well as its lower thermal conductivity.

  1. How effective is energy-saving window film??

High-quality film from reputable manufacturers (for example, Nanofilm) truly provides filtration in the infrared part of the spectrum and has an efficiency approaching that of i-glass. At the same time, it practically does not darken the room.

In addition to energy-saving, there are mirror and color light-protective films. They are useful on the south side of the house to protect against heating of the room in sunny weather and from excess light.

  1. How to properly stick such a film with your own hands?

To apply the film, I strongly advise you to remove the glass unit from the frame. There are two reasons for this:

  • When cutting it along the contour of a double-glazed window installed in the frame, it is very easy to damage the rubber seal;
  • The inevitable gaps around the edges will look untidy and collect dirt.

To remove a glass unit from the frame, you need:

  • Pry the middle of one of the beads (the longer one) with a knife blade or a thin steel spatula and pull it out of the frame. Don’t be afraid of the bead bending, it won’t break;
  • Repeat the operation with the remaining glazing beads one by one. The last one to be removed is the top one: it will hold the glass unit in the frame until the last moment.

Dismantling double-glazed windows begins with removing the glazing beads.

The released glass unit is placed on a table covered with a cloth and thoroughly washed to remove any dirt - first with water and any detergent, then with a glass cleaner.


By the time the film is applied, the glass should be clean, transparent and dry.

The film together with the base (the so-called liner) is cut to the size of the glass unit using ordinary scissors. You cannot cut the film after sticking it with a stationery knife. This is simpler, but there is a high risk of breaking the seal of the double-glazed window around the perimeter of the glass.

Then the glass lying on the table is generously moistened with soapy water. This will prevent the formation of air bubbles under the film.

The next stage: the film is peeled off from the liner (it’s best to do this together), after which its adhesive surface is also moistened with soapy water. Then the film is placed with the adhesive side on the glass. All that remains is to drive the water out from under it; this is done by sliding movements of a dry cloth or plastic card from the center to the edges.

If there are still bubbles of water under the film, don't worry about it. It will quickly evaporate.

All that remains is to install the double-glazed window. It is displayed on plastic spacers with a small gap between the bottom edge and the frame; then beads are installed and driven into the frame one by one, starting from the top (with a rubber mallet or a hammer through a block).


The most convenient way to hammer in the bead is with a rubber mallet.

The last bead is pressed into the frame along the edges and hammered in the middle.

Technologies

  1. What technology is used to produce energy-saving glass??

Until the 1990s, the only technology available was the so-called hard coating (K-glass). It is produced by applying a layer of metal oxides to the hot surface of a glass plate.

During pyrolysis (high temperature chemical reaction) a layer of InSnO2 (a compound of indium, tin and oxygen) is formed on the surface. The main feature of K-glass is the high mechanical strength of the spraying (which is why, in fact, it is called hard).

At the turn of the century, first abroad and then in Russia, i-glass with soft coating became widespread. It is multi-layered; the main components are silver and titanium oxide. The coating is applied in a vacuum by cathode sputtering: metals are deposited on the surface of the glass under the influence of an electromagnetic field.

The advantages of i-glass compared to older technology are greater light transmittance in the visible part of the spectrum (90-92 percent versus 70) and lower permeability to infrared rays.


K-glass transmits only about 70 percent of the light in the visible spectrum.

Currently, K-glass accounts for no more than 10% of market sales. The bulk of the market has been successfully captured by more advanced technology.

  1. The coating is applied over the entire glass area?

Initially, yes. But the 10 mm edge along the entire perimeter of the i-glass is cleared of spray when assembling the glass into a double-glazed window. This is necessary in order to ensure adhesion of the sealant. K-glass does not require surgery: its spraying has sufficient strength and adhesive properties.


When assembling a double-glazed window, the edges are cleaned of i-spraying.

  1. How long can energy-saving glass be stored before being assembled into a double-glazed unit??

With hard coating - indefinitely, with soft coating - no more than 3 months.

What else affects the energy efficiency of windows?

The energy efficiency of windows depends not only on the type of heat-saving layer, the injection of inert gas and the number of chambers in the double-glazed window. It is directly influenced by profiles, fittings and installation quality. If you don’t take at least one of the points seriously, the windows will retain heat worse.

PVC profiles

The stability of the shapes of window structures and their tightness depend on the choice of these elements. Also, they should not serve as cold bridges, causing a decrease in temperature in the interior and the formation of condensation. To do this, high-quality profiles must have:

  • thickness of external and internal walls corresponding to GOST;
  • reinforcing liners made of steel;
  • smooth surface without defects or yellow spots.

If PVC profiles do not meet the listed criteria, then purchasing energy-efficient double-glazed windows makes no sense. Due to the low quality of plastic and the lack of reinforcement in winter, the structure of the frames and sashes is deformed, and the windows become depressurized.

Fittings and sealing contours

These elements of window structures also provide airtightness. The tight fit of the active sashes to the frame structure will depend on their quality, reliability and functionality. As a result, it is recommended:

  1. Choose two-chamber silicone seals to complete the windows and care for them regularly - wipe and lubricate with glycerin every 6 months.
  1. Order the integration of microlifts that prevent premature wear of fittings.
  1. Ask the manufacturer to use hidden hinges for hanging the sashes, which have a higher level of tightness.
  1. Additionally, install micro-slit ventilation devices or supply ventilation valves. This is necessary to reduce heat loss in winter when ventilating rooms.

All these measures are best taken at the stage of ordering windows. Such timely actions will help reduce heat loss by approximately 3-5%.

Installation

Energy-efficient windows made of plastic, wood or aluminum will automatically lose all their heat-saving qualities if the installation is not carried out in accordance with GOST. Ignoring this recommendation entails depressurization of structures around the perimeter of the frames. Other unpleasant problems are also possible - deformation of the window frame, regular fogging of windows due to poor ventilation and the appearance of mold. Buyers are advised to independently familiarize themselves with the list of standards that are displayed in GOST 30971-2012. If the installation was carried out incorrectly and problems arose during the operation of the windows, the client has the right to demand that the deficiencies be corrected. In this case, all responsibility rests with the company that performed the poor-quality installation. When ordering plastic energy-saving windows, the PVC profile can be selected in such a way as to achieve visual similarity with products made from natural wood. This can be done using lamination technology.
