It's not good to peek into other people's windows, but for statistics it's okay. Pay attention to the balconies of any high-rise building and see how the residents use these rooms. The obvious conclusion arises: the rational use of additional space is still a novelty for us. In the best case, there is a flower greenhouse on the glazed balcony; in the worst case, there are bicycles, out-of-season tires, a clothes dryer or household rubbish. But you can turn these square meters into a gym, where you can work out at any convenient time.
A glazed and insulated balcony is an ideal place for a home gym. Panoramic views, plenty of natural light, ease of ventilation are all pluses. The only downside is the cost of equipment.

Balcony design with plasterboard
- The material can be used if the surface of the walls on the balcony is uneven. Drywall sheets are mounted to a metal frame, and insulation is placed between the sheet and the wall.
- To design a balcony, use drywall that is not afraid of moisture. Externally, this canvas is ugly, so it is painted and covered with wallpaper.
Plasterboard
Finish Balcony
- The material is easy to install, so you can get the job done quickly. In addition, drywall is inexpensive, any buyer can afford it.
How to turn a balcony into a gym
Before deciding what exactly the mini-room will be like, you need to think about arranging a balcony. The main thing, of course, is that it is glazed and insulated, but there are a number of nuances, some of which I would like to examine in more detail.
Glazing
When glazing, it is advisable to install high-strength glass. Since the space on the balcony is still limited, it is worth paying attention to how the frames open. Sliding ones would be an ideal option.
Wall decoration
It is undesirable to cover walls with tiles and especially with plastic panels. It is necessary to prevent moisture from settling on the walls, so plaster and non-toxic paints are what is needed.
If it is expected that the gym will be used with weights, dumbbells and other free weights, the best option for wall cladding would be cork panels. They are more difficult to damage by an accidental blow.
Flooring
For subfloors, a floating screed is best; it insulates noise well. You can lay carpet or cork on top of it. Linoleum and laminate are placed on a rubber backing.
Lighting
Only the top one, with white spectrum lamps, so that the light in the hall looks like natural daylight.
Ventilation
It is imperative to ensure constant ventilation of the balcony. The ideal option would be a climate control system, but if the budget does not allow, then you should at least install a fan and a humidifier.
Design
When decorating a gym on the balcony, it is better to choose light, natural shades. The exception is green in all variations. In the “green room” you want to relax, not exercise.
Study
One of the most popular balcony design ideas today is a mini home office. For small apartments, where there is nowhere to be alone and to work in peace, this is just a godsend.
It is possible to organize a business office even in a small space - just a small table for a computer (and even a stand for a laptop) and a couple of chairs are enough. You can place shelves on the walls and small cabinets in the corners so that everything you need for work is at hand. During the day, with natural light, such a balcony will be especially comfortable, and in the evening, a table lamp will save you.
Typical gym options
The balcony is completely ready to be converted into a gym. Now we need to understand what this hall will be like.
Hall for men
So, there is a task - to turn the balcony into a hall for a man. Due to the limited space, it will not be possible to build a full-fledged “rocking chair” on the balcony; more than one exercise machine simply will not fit on it, so you will have to choose between functional and strength training.
The complex for functional training already includes a horizontal bar and a monkey bars. You can hang a punching bag or other attachments on it.
If you focus on strength exercises and building muscle mass, then you can put a block weight simulator on the balcony.
Weight block simulator on the balcony
The photo shows a weight block simulator that works the muscles of the torso and arms. Exercise machines of this type are perfect for training at home, since working on them does not require special sports skills and is absolutely safe. There is a boxing bag in the corner - you can hang it up and warm up before the main workout.
The approximate cost is 70,000–100,000 rubles, depending on the level of equipment.
Any of these options will fit even on a small balcony without any problems.
The room can additionally be equipped with dumbbells and a universal bench.
Hall for women
Women who care about their health and body most often want to work off extra calories and tighten problem areas. To stay fit, you can place a bicycle ergometer or treadmill on the balcony. This is the most common option for a balcony room.
Balcony with bicycle ergometer in eco-style
This mini-hall (decorated in not recommended green colors) has a bicycle ergometer, which allows you to warm up, get rid of excess calories, lose weight and strengthen your heart muscles. In the corner there is a gymnastic wheel with different grip options for tidying up the muscles of the back, abs and shoulders.
The estimated cost is 70,000–150,000 thousand rubles (depending on the sophistication of the bicycle ergometer).
If you need to focus specifically on tightening women’s problem areas (back, abdomen, hips, buttocks), then you can equip the balcony room with exercise equipment for working with your own weight, for example hyperextension or an abdominal bench. Both will easily fit onto the glass balcony of a modern house.
Estimated cost: 12,000–30,000 rubles.
Hall for the older generation
About a third of Russian adults live with their parents. And if young people lead an active lifestyle and are ready to visit fitness centers far from home, then for the older generation this becomes a problem: they are lazy, they don’t have time, and often it’s just hard. To solve this problem, you can set aside a balcony as a living room for elderly parents.
Serious exercise is contraindicated for older people, but daily light exercise is the opposite. In such a room you can install a simulator for kinesitherapy. The exercise machine will help restore joint mobility and increase the elasticity of ligaments and muscles.
Estimated cost: 19,000–47,000 rubles.
Children's happiness
If adults need discipline and motivation to play sports, then a normal healthy child is ready to move constantly (with breaks for sleep and rest). Any family with a child will enthusiastically accept the idea of sending the child to hang and jump somewhere outside the family room.
Children's sports complex on a standard balcony
Setting up a room for children on the balcony is probably the easiest and cheapest thing to do. A wall bar, a horizontal bar, rings, a climbing rope that can easily be used to make a swing or a “bungee” - this is all a child needs for natural physical development and health.
Approximate cost: 19,000–25,000 rubles.
Independently setting up a small gym for your home will not result in prohibitive financial costs. Some of the options considered are comparable in price to a fitness club membership for 2-3 people. So, with a stable interest in an active lifestyle, a gym on the balcony will be profitable, and most importantly, useful!
Rest zone
When looking for an idea for decorating a balcony, you don’t have to choose complex options, but simply organize a mini-living room where you will only relax and receive guests.
There are many design options here, from minimalism (soft pillows, a bean bag chair, a couple of comfortable chairs, a small table) to the most luxurious design. The most important advantage of a balcony seating area is that it can be placed both on a small balcony and on a huge loggia.
Even a modest unglazed balcony will do, although it can only be used in summer. But this will not make the coziness any less - boxes with flowers, rattan furniture, a glass of lemonade or a glass of wine on a mini-table - and now the best place in the world to relax is ready.
Important points
When equipping a gym, some important points should be taken into account:
- Color solutions. Psychologists recommend using shades called “ecological” - grass, soft blue or sand. Avoid patterns that irritate the eyes, as well as combinations that lead to rapid fatigue.
- Flooring. If the training is carried out on an orbit track or an exercise bike, then it does not make much difference what material the floor is covered with. The main thing is that it is practical and durable. When performing physical exercises on the floor, the best option would be a cork floor or carpet. A simplified version is a rubber mat. All these materials have increased sound insulation.
- Wall surface finishing. For a home gym, where fitness will be the main activity, it is better to use natural materials: decorative plaster, paper wallpaper, cork panels. When performing exercises with heavy equipment, the third option is the most optimal, since this coating is shock-resistant. Even if dents appear, they quickly disappear, especially since they are easy to correct.
- Ventilation. During physical exercise, it is desirable that the air is always fresh. When installing windows, you should take into account the opening trajectory of the window. A very convenient option is top transom ventilation.
Balcony design with wood
- Wooden lining is ideal for a balcony where you plan to relax and drink coffee and tea in the morning. Wood is considered an environmentally friendly material. Thanks to it, you feel as if you are outside the city or on a comfortable terrace.
Stylish
Wood
Design
- A good, high-quality wooden lining is easy and quick to install, since it has grooves. The assembled surface is smooth and has no cracks.
- Repairing wood trim is also easy. The part that is damaged is removed and replaced with a new one. Wooden lining made of coniferous wood is an inexpensive option for balcony design.
- If you are interested in high-quality, reliable material, give preference to aspen or oak, and then the design of the balcony will definitely surprise you.
Location of sports equipment
Along with the factors described above, it is important to consider the order of placement of sports paraphernalia:
- Place for shells. To ensure that there is always order in the gym on the loggia, it is necessary to equip a closet for storing various equipment. It can be installed at the end of the room.
- Exercise equipment. First, you should analyze the relationship between the size of the balcony and the types of training that will be carried out. If the balcony is very small, you can limit yourself to one universal sports device: a treadmill, an exercise bike or an orbitrack.
- Swedish wall. Its most practical location is the end wall. If you have a large balcony, you can purchase a model that has a rope, rings or trapezoid. Lay a thick mat on the floor.
- Free exercise area. Even before starting training on the machines, a light warm-up is necessary, which also requires a certain place. Perhaps the exercises will be carried out on the floor with apparatus, so there should be no sharp corners or protrusions in the room. If there is not enough space, and there is a desire to place a corner for relaxation, you should install small chairs that fold and a folding table.
It is not recommended to clutter the room too much, and replace the strength training machine, which takes up a lot of space, with dumbbells or kettlebells.
Children's playroom
If a child does not have his own room or there are several children in the house, it is possible to develop such an interesting idea as a games room on the loggia.
For decoration you need a thick fluffy carpet, shelves with items for children's creativity, toys, a table, comfortable chairs, and if the size allows - a wall bars. Playing blind man's buff or catch-up on such a loggia will be problematic, but the baby will always be able to be alone or invite friends, draw or sculpt something. The playroom will become a real secret hideout for your child, and you will be free from toys scattered throughout the apartment.
Installation and fastening
After the place for the horizontal bar or wall bars on the balcony has been determined, you can begin to mount them. Some sports equipment does not need to be fixed, especially if they are folding options. To learn how to make a balcony-gym, watch this video:
For safety, it would be a good idea to place rugs underneath them to provide stability.
When installing exercise equipment, including folding ones, you should adhere to some rules:
- simulators should be located at a distance of 1 -1.5 m from each other;
- the interval between the wall and the simulator must be at least 30 cm.
Workshop
If you are a dedicated freelancer or just love to sew, sculpt and embroider, try setting up a workshop on your balcony. The most interesting ideas are suitable for a creative studio - you can place shelves from ceiling to floor with everything you need, put a sewing machine on a small table, or leave free space for your products.
The creative atmosphere will be complemented by light curtains, plants, figurines - everything that puts you in a creative mood and gives inspiration. If the loggia is large and bright, then here you can not only sew, knit or create unusual jewelry, but even set up an easel and paint.
Sports corner design
A small gym installed on a balcony may be simple in design, but has the great advantage of having three windows. If for certain reasons you are not happy with the look of them or there is a desire to do something unusual, then you should carefully consider a new design. About the small gym on the balcony, watch this video:
The main attribute for sports rooms are various posters, inscriptions or leaflets. It is necessary to choose the appropriate set of such motivating elements for your situation. You can also arrange your home gym, especially if there are children living in the house, in the form of a fairy-tale jungle or decorate it with characters from your favorite cartoon characters.
With a well-equipped balcony for a gym, doing physical exercise will be a pleasure. The main thing is to take into account all the subtleties: the choice of finishing materials, the location of exercise equipment and everything that can affect the quality of sports.
Library
Such balcony design ideas are perfect for passionate bibliophiles and those who cannot imagine life without relaxing with a book in their hands.
If you have a small, modest balcony at your disposal, simply place several vertical shelves with your favorite books in the corners, place comfortable chairs and a folding table (easy to make yourself) for sandwiches and iced tea. On a large loggia, you can expand even more - install durable bookcases for all the books accumulated in the house, move a floor lamp, large armchairs, and even combine a library and a study.
Decorating the balcony from the inside
Nowadays, more and more people stop using the balcony as a storage room and arrange it as a living space. Decorating a balcony is quite an interesting thing, because there are many ways to use this room. For example, a balcony or loggia can be attached to an apartment or made into a separate room.
In this article we will look at some ideas that many people have already implemented. Let's look at each of them separately.
Balcony design with vinyl siding
- Externally, this material resembles wood paneling. It has the same shape and has connecting grooves.
- The material is installed simply and conveniently.
- Surfaces can be coated with paint, but initially the construction market offers consumers a wide range of colors.
Simple and beautiful
- Compared to wood trim, siding is non-flammable, easy to maintain, and has a long service life.
- In addition, we note that the material is considered resistant to precipitation and temperature changes. Therefore, it is ideal for balcony design.
Balcony in the form of a children's room
Very often the children's room is too small, so the loggia is combined with the room or arranged separately. Such a “balcony” should be warm, safe and environmentally friendly.
Insulating the balcony is the first task you must complete. When working, do not forget that you need to use only light materials, since the balcony is not intended for too heavy loads. If we talk about glazing, then the work should only be done by professionals.
In addition, when ordering, be sure to inform the master that the balcony will be used as a living space, then he will select windows with good thermal insulation for you. Although you may not know all the intricacies of this work, you should definitely double-check the evenness of the installed window vertically and horizontally.
Children's windows should not be blown out, so it is important that all seals adhere tightly to each other. The easiest way to find out if a window is blowing is to light a match and “walk” near the sashes. If the draft does not blow out the flame, it means the window was installed efficiently, if on the contrary, then it needs to be redone.
As we mentioned earlier, for a balcony that will be used as a nursery, a comfortable temperature is very important. A warm floor will cope with this task perfectly. It can be made either water or electric.
To decorate the interior for the nursery, we recommend involving children. The child will spend most of the time in the room, so he will be pleased if you allow him to choose the decoration, furniture, etc. In any case, a children's room on a balcony or loggia is a very unusual and beautiful solution.
Pantry
At all times, the main idea of finishing a balcony remained a storage room. If it is impossible to get rid of this “design decision”, try to make the loggia stylish and functional.
Good to know! Use light colors when decorating - this will visually elongate the room and move away from the image of a frightening dark room.
It is better to place cabinets and shelving in the corners - if the size of the balcony allows, install sliding wardrobes. You can store children's toys, winter clothes in them, if the room is not insulated - even winter preparations.
Natural materials, flowers and paintings will add coziness to a warm room. It is better to leave the middle of the loggia empty to place furniture and relax.
Balcony in the form of a bedroom
Some people are very hospitable, but, unfortunately, they do not have the opportunity to receive overnight guests, or guests simply have to sleep on the floor. If you have imagination and some skills, you can make a good bedroom from a simple balcony or loggia that will be used at any time of the year. For proper rest, it is necessary to provide heat and waterproofing and high-quality glazing.
Finding a bed in a regular store will be very difficult or even impossible. Therefore, furniture will have to be made to order. A podium is perfect for this room. It will not only fit perfectly into the interior, but can also store many useful things. See photo.
Balcony design with plastic
The use of plastic as a material for balcony design is sometimes a dubious decision that causes different opinions. But despite this, the material has the following advantages
- Moisture resistance.
- Little weight.
- Huge range of options.
- Easy to install.
Work zone
Bright
Plastic
- However, at the same time, the material has some disadvantages, for example, fragility . At very low temperatures, plastic can become deformed and crack.
- Also, plastic can break from impacts.
- That is why this material cannot be used on those balconies where children often visit.
Balcony in the form of a kitchen
It is worth noting that to implement this idea, it is necessary to carry out a thorough renovation in both rooms - both in the kitchen and on the balcony. For example, you need to provide the balcony with sockets and good lighting. If you plan to install a sink on the balcony, the room is equipped with a water supply system. It is also important to consider that repairs may require redevelopment. Therefore, to avoid troubles, it is necessary to coordinate this issue with the housing inspection.
If you decide to connect a balcony room with a kitchen, then you need to install high-quality glazing. Three-amp double-glazed windows are perfect for this. In addition, it is necessary to provide good insulation. An example of a kitchen on a balcony can be seen in the photo.
Dining room
This idea for a loggia will be ideal if you have always dreamed of a pastoral picture with a veranda, wicker furniture and a light breakfast and dinner.
It is especially convenient if the balcony is adjacent to the kitchen - it is easy to move a dining table and chairs there, place several cabinets with dishes, and attach pots with plants to the walls. If the room is insulated, such a room can be used all year round, and summer will always reign in your dining room.
A dining room on the balcony is also a very functional idea: if the kitchen is small, you can perfectly unload the room, leaving only a work area there. And on the loggia you can receive guests, have breakfast or have romantic summer dinners under the stars with the windows open.
Balcony in the form of a gym
If you want to take care of your appearance, but you can’t find time for the gym, then an excellent solution would be to make it, as they say, “at hand.” For an active person or someone who works in a sedentary job, it will be very useful if you set up a gym on the balcony or loggia.
In addition, no documentation will have to be changed, because, in fact, there is no need to install water supply or electricity on the balcony; it will not be used as a living space.
For a gym in a loggia, several nuances are important:
- good lighting;
- possibility to place sports equipment;
- proper ventilation.
If you plan to use the balcony as a gym in the winter, then think about insulation and high-quality glazing.
Each balcony has a load-bearing wall, which is perfect for mounting a horizontal bar on it, or even better, a Swedish wall. To attach the horizontal bar, it is advisable to consult with an experienced builder. In addition, an abdominal bench or dumbbells can fit almost anywhere. A unit such as an exercise bike or stepper will also fit perfectly on the balcony.
You shouldn’t be too concerned with the design of the gym; for a motivating atmosphere, you can hang posters or quotes and play workout music to tune your inner world. The photo shows the gym on the loggia.
Key points in planning and making homemade equipment
An obstacle to installing a horizontal bar may be the height of the balcony or loggia. Therefore, measurements and location planning begin with simple measurements. To determine the height of the horizontal bar, stand on your tiptoes and raise your arms up. The horizontal bar pipe should be located at this level. Mark the location with a pencil.
Inspect the mounting area; there should be no hollow blocks in it. In “Khrushchev” apartments with low ceilings, the overlap of the window block can be completed with two or three rows of brickwork, which will not interfere with the fastening. To avoid hitting your head when doing pull-ups, stand on a stool. This measurement approximately corresponds to the height of the pull-up.
Portable transformable exercise machines are well suited for balconies and loggias, which make it possible to use the apparatus as a horizontal bar, parallel bars, or a suspension for a punching bag. The cross handle design allows you to train with a narrow, wide grip. Pillows make it easier to perform abdominal exercises with your back against the wall.
If you have budgetary difficulties, you can make a simple horizontal bar using a homemade method. This will require a strong water pipe and welded brackets. When ordering an angle bracket for a welder, please note that the wall strip must (with a length of at least 30 centimeters) be equipped with three holes for fastenings.
How to arrange a mini-gym on the balcony?
A fairly spacious balcony or loggia can and should be used wisely. For example, set up a sports corner here to conduct training, exercise, while admiring the view from the window. The RMNT website will give you advice on setting up such a mini-gym on a balcony or loggia.
Of course, converting a balcony or loggia into a gym needs to start with glazing and insulation. After this, it will be possible to install here, for example, a convector, so that you can exercise during the cold season. And proceed directly to arranging a mini-gym, guided by our advice:
- As the portal Rmnt.ru has already written, there is a large selection of flooring for home sports corners. On the balcony it is advisable to use sports linoleum, cork or just a rubber mat;
- We also recommend using cork panels for wall decoration. They are an ideal choice if you plan to do strength training with weights. On cork wall coverings, dents from impacts will be less noticeable, and in general this material is resistant to mechanical damage. In addition, you can simply paint the walls, cover them with wallpaper, use decorative plaster - you have a wide choice. You can leave the brickwork if it looks attractive and you have just such walls in your house. But we don’t recommend covering the walls of a mini-gym with plastic panels! They are easy to damage, and it’s worth thinking about environmental friendliness;
- The Swedish wall is always placed at one of the end walls of the loggia, and in the case of a balcony - in the corner outside the window, against the wall from the entrance to the apartment; there are simply no other options. If dimensions allow, the wall can be supplemented with rope and rings;
- The color scheme should be neutral, not irritating. Bright colors and patterns on the walls will be tiring and distracting during training;
- There is not much space on a balcony or loggia, so we advise you to choose a universal exercise machine that will fit exactly. A regular bicycle, orbitrack, treadmill, or cardio machine will do. Instead of a volumetric strength training device, it is better to buy just weights and dumbbells;
- Be sure to worry about where you store your sports equipment. It could be just a cabinet near the end wall, which can easily fit not only your dumbbells, but also sleds, skates, rollers - everything you need for active pastime in the fresh air. Get additional storage space that is never superfluous;
- Do not clutter up the entire space of the loggia or balcony - you should have a place to warm up before you start exercising on the simulator. If you want to simultaneously use the balcony and as a relaxation area, choose folding chairs that can be easily removed during sports training;
- You need to take care of protection from too bright sun and ventilation. It is best to hang blinds, roller blinds, roller blinds or Roman blinds on the windows - ordinary curtains can get in the way. Ventilation is usually provided by simply opening the windows during classes, but in the summer a fan will definitely not hurt you - the balcony and loggia warm up very quickly in the sun.
We are sure that the idea of turning a balcony into a sports corner deserves attention. Moreover, it is not that difficult to implement.
Is it possible to install a treadmill in an unheated room?
Treadmills take up quite a lot of space, and they don't always match the decor of the room. A tempting solution is to place the treadmill in a place such as a garage or balcony. However, manufacturers strongly do not recommend this, especially if the garage is unheated, as this can lead to damage to the simulator.
Most manufacturers provide a number of recommendations that must be followed when placing the simulator. These recommendations are usually found in the owner's manual and typically areas such as a garage, balcony, outdoor patio, or area near water are on the "prohibited list."
Temperature changes can cause damage to equipment.
Even if you don't live in the snowy north, it's likely that at certain times of the year the room where your treadmill is located gets cold. Cold is the enemy of the mechanical components, belt and screen of the treadmill. Electronic components can also freeze and stop working. The cold can cause the running belt to harden and crack, causing premature wear. The cold also affects the screen in a similar way: it can freeze and crack.
Also, during use of the track, condensation may form due to temperature changes, which negatively affects the operation of the equipment, in particular its electronic components. A short circuit may occur at any moment due to the resulting moisture.
In addition, it is worth paying attention to the fact that when using exercise equipment on balconies, if exposed to direct sunlight, namely ultraviolet radiation, the plastic will deteriorate, the paint will burn out, and the display may fail.
The garage is usually not the cleanest room in the house. This is where dust, dirt, grass or leaves accumulate over time. This debris will end up inside the treadmill. The exercise machine must be cleaned regularly when it is in the house, let alone in “open spaces”. Debris can cause premature wear on the walking belt, motor, and other components of the treadmill.
Warranty terms
The manufacturer's instructions usually list safety precautions for positioning the treadmill. Failure to follow these guidelines will void your warranty. Warranty conditions may vary slightly among different manufacturers, brands and models of exercise equipment. For complete information, please refer to the instructions.

Stages of arrangement
Before choosing what your own gym will be like, you need to evaluate the available space on the balcony or loggia. Next, you need to draw up a plan for arranging additional premises. Here are the main steps.
When glazing a balcony or loggia, it is better to give preference to high-strength glass, and also to provide for the possibility of opening the frames using a sliding mechanism.
The best option is plaster or non-toxic paints. You can also cover part of the balcony with cork panels if you plan to store weights, dumbbells or other free weights here.
If you plan to use laminate or linoleum, you will need to first lay a rubber backing.
Of course, before the very beginning, when the stages are distributed, you will need to develop a design project. This is necessary so that there is something to build on when choosing finishing materials, lamps and even exercise equipment.
Keeping pigeons away from your balcony
Question: Are there pigeons on my balcony?
Please help me get rid of the pigeons on the balcony. I've tied up tin foil plates, bells and colored plastic bags to scare them away, but nothing works. I live in an apartment building so I am not allowed to install any kind of screens or permanent structures.

I also became interested in laying eggs, watching and hatching litter, but was disgusted by the mess the pigeons left behind. Was horrified when they came back the next year, but still couldn't throw the eggs away. I was absolutely determined not to repeat the whole unpleasant story this year, so when they started their regular balcony meetings, I pulled on about a dozen CDs and I can't believe it! I haven't seen a pigeon since then! I don't know how it works, maybe when they fly towards the CD the holographic effect disrupts their homing radar or something - but whatever it is, I'm absolutely delighted!

You don't actually need to hang a lot of CDs for it to work. All I did was stick 2 CDs on my balcony railing and I haven't seen a single pigeon on my balcony since!
Although I could just be lucky.

I also came home from vacation and found two pigeon eggs on my balcony and I didn’t have the heart to get rid of them. I have to say this was the biggest mistake I've ever made because now they just won't go away! They were finally old enough to fly so I bought a plastic Owl and let me tell you it was a waste of money. Now they just hang out with the owl. The amount of pigeon feces on my balcony is simply enormous! I cleaned it with beach and water. I'm going to try the CDs and see if they work, but I've also heard that moth balls work too. Apparently they don't like the smell of it. Thanks for all your suggestions!

I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment complex and I have a balcony with a garden. There are wide bars on the balcony. The pigeon menace was insane, they were dirtying my balcony and most of all destroying my plants!
Considering I live in a rented house, I didn't want to spend too much money on mesh, so I tried scarecrow, hung CDs, put aluminum foil flags in pots, and none of them worked for over a week. I finally decided to imitate netted balconies using a ball of twine and cut up mosquito net and it works wonders! A month passed and there were no pigeons on my balcony.
Here's how I did it: The top three quarters of the balcony grill have horizontal metal bars running parallel to each other about 1 foot apart with parallel vertical bars 1 foot apart. The lower part of the balcony grille has only horizontal slats parallel to each other. This would allow the pigeons to come and go freely and pretty much destroy all my plants.
So, I started with a ball of twine at one end of the balcony and criss-crossed it over the bars. For the bottom, I bought a cheap, light-colored mosquito net (so it wouldn't block the light) and cut it into one long piece, which I then tied to the bottom of the balcony.

Question: Do pigeons build a nest on the balcony of an apartment?
I live in an apartment with my two-year-old boy. We have two pigeons that are trying to make a nest in the corner of my balcony. It's been a battle the last 2 weeks, they bring in twigs and branches every two minutes and I sweep them away every two hours. I can't use chemicals around my baby so I'm at my wits' end. I need help! Please, how can I stop them from building a nest in the corner of my balcony?

Pigeons can really be a nuisance. Many apartments here have balconies, protecting them from others. If you're renting, talk to your landlord and see if they'd be willing to help with the installation. Putting a plastic owl there might scare them away. You can also try an old gardening trick: placing aluminum pans or CDs on strings so they flutter in the wind and scare the birds. Although your little boy might find them very interesting!

Take a plastic realistic owl and place it on your balcony. We use one on the boom of our cranes to keep the osprey from nesting on the boom, works like a charm.
We bought ours at Ace Hardware, but have seen them at other home improvement stores like Lowes or Home Depot. Answer this question
Question: Should pigeons not be allowed on the balcony?
They like my balcony. They nest there and stay there constantly. Due to the design of the balcony, fences cannot be built. I tried everything! Where can I get spikes? Maybe I can straighten out the balcony ledge.

Try tying bright, long plastic strips to the roof of your balcony to make them flapping and making noise. The noise and movement should scare them off... if not, get one of those big artificial owls from the garden store and hang it there... which usually scares them off. Good luck.

Question: Should pigeons not be allowed on the balcony?
I have problems with pigeons. They can steal, and on my balcony they poop on the chair and my lamp. I would like to know what I can do to keep them off my balcony. My kids play here and there's poop everywhere.

Try using water mixed with cayenne pepper, cinnamon or curry powder and spray it on the balcony. They also don't like shiny pinwheels. You can buy them at the dollar store. If all else fails, try tying bird netting around the perimeter of the balcony.

You can hang old CDs. Shiny surfaces and movement will scare them away.

I have people who swear by keeping fake dollar tree snakes on the grass. Change them every other day or so to let the birds know they are the real thing.
Fake owls also help, and you can even make them solar powered so they turn on every few minutes.

The repellent method will work well, but may not be very decorative. You can purchase nylon and plastic mesh from home stores to hang it over the entire area of the balcony. By attaching a net at the top and over the balcony ledge, pigeons will not be able to land on your balcony.

You could probably spend an entire day reading all the problems and suggestions on how to get rid of pigeons that appear if you ask this question. The funny thing is that what works for one person doesn't work for another. Maybe pigeons are different for different residents? Suggestions vary greatly: hang CDs on a wire or hook from the balcony, hang strips of aluminum foil, buy a large fake owl or snake, spray various combinations of items on the balcony (how do you get to them to spray?), etc. It seems , is most praised for hanging CDs, but it may not work for you either. I'm not affiliated with this site, but if all else fails, you might want to look into electronic methods. www.bird-x.com/

Reflective tape, which is actually double-sided silver tape and is available on Amazon for about $10. Birds also don't like the smell of WD-40.

I don't know if it works, it looks like it really can. Although I know that pigeons are seriously afraid of cats.
You might even be able to make one of these by looking closely at what they have and how they tore the head off with a spring.
You can buy a stuffed cat (cat) or make one out of dark colored fabric and (cut off the head) attach it with a very long springy "spring" like they did. It seems that every time the wind blows, or if you use a "long spring", even a slight breeze will cause it to sway.

Do you have a bird feeder? If so, get rid of it as soon as possible!
If you are just getting them willy nilly (no feeders) and you have tried all the usual things…. The only thing I can think of is to try spraying large Mylar balloons on the deck - different heights (use helium if that's still used in your city). Use heavy rocks to hold them down...they will move in the wind and should keep birds away.
Best wishes!

MDF balcony design
- MDF is a pressed panel made from dried wood fibers. They are covered with PVC film on top.
- In stores you can find a wide variety of colors and textures. Externally, the MDF board is attractive. The material perfectly retains noise and prevents warm air from quickly escaping into the street.
- The material is easy to install and does not require special care.
MDF Light On the balcony
- MDF has a high degree of wear resistance and is perfect for the design of a balcony in an apartment. At the same time, the cost of the material is significantly lower than the price of wood.
- There is one negative point - MDF does not like strong moisture, the material is flammable, and therefore is not considered durable.
