The choice of paint for PVC windows and the technology of its application

Plastic windows are painted in several ways, thanks to which manufacturers have been able to achieve different effects. In this case, the color is given to the products both during the production of PVC profiles and at the final stage. The durability of coatings and the number of decors depend on the choice of technology. There are techniques that allow the client to choose an individual color and order an exclusive product. Thanks to painting technologies, buyers have the opportunity to purchase affordable windows for any architectural projects and even for wooden houses.

Peculiarities

Paint for plastic differs from compositions that are applied to other materials.
Its application also has its own specifics. For example, plastic based on ABS and PVC must be coated with a special primer before painting, which should be purchased at a car dealership or paint store. The mixture is sprayed and wiped, the treated surface dries for at least 60 seconds. Basic requirements for painting:

  • thorough drying and cleaning of the surface, freeing it from lubricating oils, dust particles, and so on;
  • preliminary preparation is necessary in all cases, with the exception of applying acrylic water-based paint to polystyrene or ABS;
  • the temperature of the plastic, dye and equipment used to apply it must be carefully balanced;
  • it is advisable to heat the air to 18 degrees or higher, it should be dried to 80% or less;
  • it is necessary to apply only one layer, the thickness of which is on average 60 microns;
  • When drying, plastic products are kept at temperatures from 18 to 60 degrees, depending on how thick the layer is applied.

Preparing a window for painting

In order for the frame to look neat after applying paint, it is necessary to remove all fittings, the doors themselves, and protect the glass before painting. If latches and hinges are faulty, they are repaired and replaced. Locks and handles that cannot be removed are simply wrapped with masking tape to protect them from paint. This will avoid unnecessary cleaning.

In addition to fasteners and handles, glass sheets also need to be prepared for painting. Most often, white paints and varnishes are used for coating, which after drying are very noticeable on the glass. Therefore, even before mixing the paint, the joints of the frame and the glass are sealed with wide masking tape on both sides. For novice craftsmen, it is better to cover all the glass with newspapers. We paint the frames carefully so as not to create unnecessary work for ourselves.

Note! The adhesive tape is not attached to the frame tightly, but with an indentation of 1.5-2 mm. This distance will allow the paint to penetrate into the cracks of the frame, thereby protecting the wood from destruction and from moisture accumulation.. It is not recommended to use old glazing beads for glass on old frames

Such structures wear out quickly, so it is better to replace them with new ones. To prepare, new glazing beads are sanded, coated with primer and paint. After drying, they are nailed to the frames. We choose high-quality coating materials so that after a while you don’t have to replace some elements with new ones.

Decorative overlays

Decorating PVC profiles with aluminum overlays involves snapping an aluminum overlay onto the frame, painted in any RAL color. An increase in the price of a window with a one-sided aluminum trim will add to the price of the window

Coextrusion

Window decoration can be done using the co-extrusion method. During the manufacturing process, the window frame mixture is combined with a layer of polymethyl acrylate (PMMA). Due to this, elements are fused at the molecular level, and the profile acquires increased strength. Co-extruded profiles are resistant to mechanical damage and scratches. In Russia, decoration using the coextrusion method is not yet used. The cost of colored co-extruded imported profiles will add to the cost of conventional windows

Profile painting

There is a way to decorate PVC profiles using painting. A special paint made of two-component acrylic-polyurethane resin is applied to the frame using an air spray gun. The process takes place on automatic machines, which eliminates defects as much as possible. Painting adds to the price of the window

10%. If you want to paint the PVC profile yourself, you should remember that correct adherence to the technology is only possible in a factory environment and the likelihood of damaging the window when painting it yourself is very high. Trying to cut costs may result in new costs.

Russians often save on windows, ignoring designer color schemes and installing white plastic windows, without thinking about disturbing the balance of colors and materials. The higher the income of the population, the greater the desire and opportunity to think not only about convenience and practicality, but also about the architectural appearance of buildings. In apartment buildings, an unapproved change in the color of windows on the façade side can result in a fine of up to 30 thousand rubles and a requirement to return the windows to their original color.

Coloring plastic at home

You can handle painting plastic materials yourself; this will greatly save your budget. Turning to professionals is very expensive. To carry out the work at home yourself, you will need to take care of your own safety by preparing protective equipment, also prepare all the necessary tools (listed above), and perform all stages of the work. They will be discussed in detail further.

Painting methods

The paint coating is available either in cans or in aerosols. Which option to choose depends on the size of the product and the experience of the person who will carry out the painting work.

  1. Spray cans are more appropriate for a small painting object; they are not difficult to work with, but before you start, you should try it out by spraying a little paint on an unnecessary surface, this will help you understand how best to spray to get the desired result. In general, the aerosol method will give a good, even coating. This method does not allow you to mix tones, and thus it will not be possible to apply clear color boundaries.
  2. The jar is larger in volume than the can, but storage in it is only possible for a short time. For this reason, it is often used for large volumes of work. It should also be taken into account that working with a brush is much more difficult and requires skill. Otherwise, unsightly traces of bristles and stains may remain on the product, the coating will be uneven and aesthetically look untidy.

Using a spray gun can make the process easier; a roller is rarely used. For a beginner, the spray can method would be more suitable.

Preparing plastic for painting

As mentioned earlier, you should carefully prepare the product before starting work in order to get an excellent result. This stage includes the following steps:

  1. To get rid of the previous cladding, you can use sandpaper, solvent, or a hair dryer.
  2. Get rid of contaminants.
  3. The product must be degreased using a solvent.
  4. Treat the product with antistatic agent.
  5. If required, use putty.
  6. To ensure good adhesion, the surface is treated with sandpaper no more than No. 180; after completing this stage, the object is cleaned and dried again.
  7. Degreasing is carried out again.
  8. Carry out priming work if required.
  9. Grind and clean again.

The product must be degreased using a solvent.

Plastic coloring technology

Having chosen the type of coloring agent, it is worth understanding the working method. The article will discuss two technologies: painting with a brush and applying with an aerosol.

They work with the brush, making wide, straight strokes, initially moving the brush softly, then pressing harder, so the coating will become thinner, and the finishing touch is also done softly to level it out. If everything is done correctly, then a one-time brush job is enough.

General recommendations:

  • You don’t need to dip the whole brush, just the tip is enough;
  • You should strive to make the layer as thin as possible by pressing on the bristles;
  • Maintain the slope of the working position of the hand.

The spray can process:

  • Place the product on a flat surface, for example on a chair, mark the part to be painted with paper tape, cover nearby objects (with film, newspaper, paper);
  • You must first shake the aerosol;
  • There should be 20-30 centimeters left to the object;
  • Spray the paint smoothly in one layer, holding the can straight;
  • For complete coloring it is worth doing two or three layers;
  • Between applying layers, wait the time indicated on the packaging until dry;
  • After completing the work, remove the tape immediately.

After waiting for it to dry, you can coat the item with varnish to increase wear resistance. Acting in the same way as when painting.

Paint for plastic is a great option to refresh old items and give them new life. The presence of a wide variety of colors allows you to come up with various solutions for decoration. Before painting the plastic, use all your imagination, take on board the tools necessary for this process, and as a result, you can perfectly decorate your home yourself.

Features of PaliPlast paint

  • Window sill paint adheres best to surfaces at a room temperature of at least 30 degrees. This does not mean that you cannot work in a colder room, but drying will take much longer. At a temperature of 20˚C, drying will last from 8 hours depending on the humidity of the room.
  • The buyer will have the opportunity to choose not only the appropriate color, but also the texture. In the line you can find pearlescent paint or metallic.
  • Before applying the paintwork, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work. To do this, the surface that you are going to paint must be thoroughly cleaned of dirt, dried and degreased. You can use special impregnations that will help increase the adhesive properties of the plastic.
  • After this, a special primer is applied to the surface. You can paint the plastic only after it has dried. This will take at least a day.
  • You can apply the paint just like regular paint: spraying it from a can, using a brush or roller.

It’s not difficult to paint plastic; the main thing is to choose the right materials to match it. Using regular paint is unacceptable, as it will peel off the plastic surface very quickly.

Primary requirements

The main requirement that such paint must meet is high adhesion. Unlike wood, plastic has a smooth, slippery surface and a very hard, dense structure that does not provide a high level of adhesion between materials.

Also, the coloring composition must have the following characteristics:

  • water resistance;
  • strength;
  • resistance to mechanical stress;
  • resistance to UV rays;
  • color preservation throughout the entire service life;
  • the absence of toxic and poisonous substances that can be released when heated;
  • resistance to temperature changes;
  • long service life;
  • wide range of colors;
  • the ability to give an object a certain texture.

The ease of application of the composition also plays an important role, since plastic windows are often painted with your own hands.

Characteristics of various paints

In addition to the above coatings, oil, enamel and adhesive paint compositions are used to paint wooden windows. To decide which paint to use in your home, compare all the climate characteristics: humidity, precipitation and temperature differences

It is also important to consider the condition and type of wood being painted.

Polyurethane and acrylic coatings

Acrylic and polyurethane based paints are considered the most resistant to adverse conditions, especially moisture. Such coatings contain toxic organic solvents, which make the composition durable. Among these two types of paints, polyurethane paints are more durable and extremely wear-resistant, which is why they are recommended for use in exterior decoration. However, polyurethane paints have one drawback - high cost. In this regard, acrylic ones are inferior to them, which is why they are more popular among novice craftsmen

It is also important that acrylic coatings can be diluted with water and mixed with pigments to obtain complex shades. However, white paint is most often chosen

Alkyd paints

Today, alkyd paints are increasingly being chosen. In addition to resistance to weather conditions, this type of coating has another advantage - it can withstand treatment with aggressive detergents and oils. The paint composition applied to the primed surface can last up to 5 years. Such paint can withstand temperatures from plus 60 to minus 50. This paint is good for application to coatings located outdoors.

Nitrocellulose window coverings

Nitrocellulose paints are also suitable for treating wooden window frames. The only feature that is worth remembering when using such coatings is the mandatory active ventilation of the premises during operation and drying. The paint contains acetone, which releases vapors after application. In addition, the paint burns very easily, so it should be stored away from sources of ignition. White coatings are very popular.

Increasingly, homeowners are coating their window frames with transparent compounds. Varnishes perfectly protect wood and allow you to admire the natural structure of the material. The composition of transparent varnishes is identical to alkyd enamels, with only one difference - coloring pigments are not added to the varnishes. Choosing such a material is the best solution if you want to preserve the texture of the wood. The main condition is that the selected material must meet the operating conditions.

Additional protection

Acrylic dyes have good adhesion to PVC. But you can increase the service life of the coating by additionally protecting it with a glossy water-based plastic varnish. In addition, the product acquires shine and a beautiful appearance.

This additional protection is relevant for window sills and windows in the kitchen. The impact of aggressive factors is reduced.

The protective layer is applied with a brush. There are no difficulties in the work, so you can apply the varnish yourself.

If the window sill or plastic pipe is located close to the fire source, then they are covered with fire-retardant CM. These are compositions intended for coloring metal.

Types of paints for PVC products

Painting plastic

Today, the market for paints and varnishes offers a huge variety of paints that can be used to properly coat PVC structures. They can be either in the form of an aerosol or spray, or in the form of conventional paint for application with a brush or roller, which can be either matte, glossy or pearlescent.

Technical characteristics of paints suitable for plastic are given in the table.

  1. Maraplane is a wonderful example for working on PVC structures.

Finishing work with this paint is carried out using a roller, sponge, brush or spray. If such paint on plastic is applied at a temperature of 20 o C, then after 20 minutes you can begin applying a second layer, and after another 4-5 hours the product will be absolutely ready for use. Maraplan paint is very resistant to ultraviolet rays and is also resistant to mechanical damage. But it is better not to subject the film to mechanical overload until the coating has completely dried.

  1. Rainbow-180 is an absolutely white glossy coating for PVC sheets.

This plastic paint is used to decorate windows, window sills, baseboards and other hard plastic, which can be used for both exterior and interior decoration. In addition to PVC, the aerosol is also suitable for various surfaces, as well as putty and wood. You can work with this paint at 15-75 o C, and the next layer can be applied after 1-2 hours. This paint is great for exterior decoration.

  1. Snezhka is an acrylic-based enamel for decorative framing of hard PVC and other materials.

According to the advice of experienced craftsmen, it is better to apply this coating in 2 layers. After applying the paint, the surface of the plastic will be matte after 5-15 hours, and this coating can be used for both external and internal work.

  1. Acmilight is a coating that can glow blue or green in a dark room.

We paint plastic with our own hands

This paint is widely used for work on PVC, ABS, polystyrene and polypropylene. It has an increased level of strength and weather resistance. This paint has proven itself well in the restoration of pots, furniture, souvenirs, window and door blocks using a spray or by dipping from 1 to 3 layers, as indicated in the instructions for use of the material. Before starting painting work, as well as during the painting process, the paint must be thoroughly mixed all the time, because additives tend to settle, and the drying time for the finish varies between 2-4 hours.

  1. Gamma – acrylic paint, presented as an aerosol.

The palette of this finishing material contains about 25 shades, which are applied to plastic, wood and steel, and it is also excellent as a spray for applying graffiti. The decorative coating obtained in this way will be weather-resistant, have a deep color and a muted shine. To achieve the best result, it is better to choose a white base (if we are talking about a fluorescent version, this requirement is mandatory). Sometimes it is necessary to apply the material in 2 layers to increase contrast and enhance color, but reapplying the material is allowed only after 30 minutes, so that the bottom coating has time to dry properly.

It is also worth highlighting a separate category of paints that contain chromium. Chrome is also called “mirror paint” and is most appropriate in mechanical engineering. To apply chromium to the surface of a product, both an aerosol and a galvanic method are used, the difference will be almost imperceptible.

Today, finishes such as chrome (especially in aerosol form) are becoming increasingly popular. Chrome, with its mirror-like features, captivates the eyes of passers-by, which is why motos and car enthusiasts love to use it.

In addition to high strength, chrome can withstand high temperature changes, and it does not matter whether an aerosol is used for application or whether the painting was done at the factory. Chrome can be gold or silver in color, which can also be an interesting detail when decorating the interior of your apartment.

In addition, chromium has excellent physical and chemical properties and an affordable price.

How to dry painted plastic profiles?

We paint PVC ourselves

The paint of PVC products dries at temperatures that exceed a threshold of 40°C. Treated fabrics need to be placed in a heated dryer after 5-10 minutes. after painting.

If the air humidity is 65% and the temperature is 50°C, the wet film (with a thickness of 80-120 microns) will dry in about 180 minutes. You should not immediately find out the level of adhesion, wait a day, and complete polymerization is possible only after 5-7 days.

Remember that the drying time of the product may increase due to:

  • thick, undried layer;
  • low temperature;
  • large size of processed area, etc.

As it became clear from the above, painting plastic is not a tricky matter. The main thing is to thoroughly prepare the surface and remove all kinds of contaminants. Only after this should you think about the color and quantity of material.

Painting the frame in several layers

After puttying, the frame becomes smooth, which means the paint will lie evenly. To ensure that the coating has a dense surface, a multi-layer application method is used. Painting is quite simple:

  • the working surface is cleaned of dust and dirt so that the fresh paint does not form lumps;
  • the composition is opened, mixed and filtered through a fine mesh.

Some craftsmen apply paint from a can to the prepared coating, which is highly not recommended. As a rule, various coating materials are sold very thick, and a thick film of paint and solvent forms on their surface. When applied, this composition produces a thick layer that will drip down and form thick accumulations of paint. Such a coating will not look aesthetically pleasing, and will quickly crack over time.

It is not recommended to pour the entire jar into the dilution vessel. Add a little paint to achieve the desired consistency. You should not choose the solvent yourself; ask a consultant about what composition is recommended for this coating.

The first layer of paint is made liquid so that it penetrates into the structure of the array. Before applying a second coat of coating to an already painted surface, the first one must be completely dry. The third layer promotes adhesion to wood. For two finishing layers, the composition is made thick to prevent drips. If drops and accumulations of paint form, they are removed with a cloth with a solvent. You should not wait for the drips to dry; they quickly harden and spoil the appearance of the entire frame.

When painting a window frame, the brush is lowered into the vessel only halfway. This will protect the instrument from the formation of excess and constant leaks. Coating begins on the side that faces the street.

Note! It is best to work with several brushes of 3-4 sizes. To cover a large area, use a thick one, and for difficult areas a small one, a couple of centimeters wide. The window frames are painted with a flat brush, it creates a flat and even stroke

To ensure an even line, place the brush on top of the frame bar and release it, allowing the brush to move under its own weight. Under gravity, the tool draws a straight, almost perfect line

After completely painting the window, you need to wait until the frame is completely dry. Only after the coating has completely dried is the protective tape removed. It is worth remembering that before work you should remove the paint from wooden windows.

Once you become familiar with the features of different coatings and application rules, you can paint the windows yourself without the help of specialists. When choosing a coloring composition, you should correlate its characteristics with the operating conditions of the coating.

Reviews from our clients

Irena Koroleva 08/27/2019

We ordered a design project for renovation of a house. The designer advised us to paint our Rehau windows to match the color of the walls. It looked absolutely bomb in the pictures, and I was inspired to do just that! Friends recommended a good craftsman, it turned out that he works at Window Repair Service. I ordered painting and it was done in just a couple of days. And indeed, it turned out no worse in real life than in the designer’s pictures! I am delighted! Thank you!

Nikolay Morozov 08/21/2019

The plastic frames were all yellowed and in some places the children scratched them. I decided to save money and paint them during the renovation rather than replace them. It turned out cheap and looks good. Sincere gratitude to the masters.

Types of paints for plastic surfaces, which one to choose, criteria

There is a wide variety of paint for plastic on sale. In order not to get confused and choose the appropriate and most convenient option, you should study all their features. After studying all the information, it will be easy to choose what to paint the plastic with. The most common types will be described below.

There is a wide variety of paint for plastic on sale.

Water-based compounds

Paints and varnishes are suitable for painting plastic products, also called acrylic enamel on water.

Typically, these coloring products are created from two elements:

  • The base is the dye itself;
  • Hardener is a component that makes acrylic enamel for plastic more reliable and resistant to external influences. This component is transparent and odorless.

It helps the paint apply easily, is stable, does not lose its color brightness for a long time, even ultraviolet radiation is not harmful to it, and it looks aesthetically pleasing. When using these paints, priming and other additional work are not required, with the exception of surface contamination. Great look for outdoor use.

When using these paints, priming and other additional work are not required.

Matte soft-touch paints

Things that are often touched by hands should be as pleasant to the touch as possible. This type is an excellent choice for painting telephones, furniture handles, plastic toys, cosmetic bags, and construction tools. In addition to providing a comfortable touch, this dye also muffles sound and light and can give an object an aesthetic appearance.

They are often purchased for painting vehicles due to their wear-resistant properties and the ability to cover vertical planes, and also has the effect of smoothing corners.

In addition to providing a comfortable touch, this dye also muffles sound and light and can give an object an aesthetic appearance.

Water-based polyurethane-acrylic paints for PVC

This type is used when it is necessary to carry out a large amount of work. They are not matte; more often this water-based plastic paint with polyurethane and acrylic components is used to cover siding, panels, PVC profiles, window frames, etc.

They are distinguished by their quality and stability. The paint is waterproof, indelible, covers the surface with a protective layer, giving the object hardness, elasticity, and is not sticky. Shows good results during application and drying in terms of the absence of sticking of products to each other, the absence of the formation of defects, and the preservation of decorative properties.

PVC itself is actually colorless, which is why it is painted to make it more pleasant to look at. The composition of the coloring material is as follows:

  • Basic acrylic paint of the required color;
  • Thick white or milky liquid, i.e. a hardener that can give either bed tones, or, on the contrary, bright colors (red, yellow, brown, green, anything at all). It is possible to obtain an unusual texture by adding textural elements to the composition that will give the appropriate effect: wood, mirrors, plaster and others.

They are distinguished by their quality and stability.

Aerosol paints for plastic

Many people believe that only professionals can spray paint. In fact, they are very convenient to apply paint; there is a large selection of colors; there is no need to mix the composition. With the aerosol, a person who for the first time decides to paint plastic on his own will feel confident.

These paints in spray cans are produced in two types:

  • The previously mentioned soft-touch, which after complete drying is pleasant to the touch and slightly rough, which allows you to hide some of the shortcomings of the product. It is also an excellent option for adding zest to the interior;
  • Monad enamel, on the contrary, will give gloss to the surface, it will sparkle in the sun, suitable for PVC.

In this variety, it is easy to choose the necessary canister for a specific purpose.

Advantages of aerosols:

  • There is no need to buy brushes, rollers, etc.;
  • Easy to use;
  • The paint composition covers the product with an even and smooth layer;
  • With their help you can reproduce any coating (mirror, metal, wood, etc.);
  • Retains brightness for a long time;
  • Subject to long-term storage;
  • Economical;
  • If you decide to apply it to a different color, it will be easy to paint over it.

The paint composition covers the product with an even and smooth layer.

Object painting is a new solution for your interior.

It is worth noting that the Swiss-made paints that our company offers are easy to clean with ordinary dishwashing detergents, which simplifies window cleaning and saves time.
They are also easy to restore. Paint is easy to combine with lamination. There is a selection of colors that are very close and ideal for laminated windows. But the most important advantage of this paint is that it dries “touch” within 5 minutes, so dust does not have time to settle on the paint and the surface will be perfectly smooth without inclusions. This is a huge advantage over other PVC paints and an excellent opportunity to use it for on-site painting. Paints are applied by air spraying. Before starting painting, specialists mask the room, cover it with a special film, the ceiling, floor, walls, furniture, rubber seals, double-glazed windows, etc., that is, everything that paint should not get into. The most time consuming part of painting on site is the camouflage of the room itself, while painting an ordinary standard window itself takes no more than one hour. In just five minutes you can safely touch your painted window, and in an hour you can use it, open and close it.

How to paint a PVC window sill with your own hands

The first is to visually assess the evenness of the surface, identify chips, cracks, and other defects. Now you need to wash the surface, including the joints with the window frames, and dry it well.

After preparation, the algorithm of actions is as follows:

  1. Cover the frames with masking tape to avoid getting paint on them. If possible, it is recommended to remove the sashes and install them after drying the window sill. I can’t remove it, stick it with tape as high as possible, not forgetting to protect the glass. Protection is especially necessary when using an aerosol - the dispersed substance tends to settle on all surfaces.
  2. Clean the surface of the window sill from glue, lubricants, and pieces of film. If the surface was previously painted, remove the decor with a special remover for PVC window sills.
  3. Treat the surface with a primer. The composition should also be selected for PVC surfaces. Impregnation is also useful - the price of the compositions is high, but the coatings provide excellent adhesion, and the paint then goes on much smoother.

Expert opinion Vladislav Ponomarev Design engineer, inventor

The primer must be applied after cleaning the surface from dirt. The window sill is treated with impregnation before applying a layer of paint, that is, after repairing defects. If there are no defects, you can immediately treat the washed and dried surface.

  1. Defects - chips, cracks should be covered with putty. Before sealing the area of chips and cracks, clean it with medium grade sandpaper. After the restoration area, dry it and sand it with fine sandpaper - the surface should be perfectly flat.
  2. Treat the dried, leveled window sill with impregnation. Apply generously, but without leaving any puddles of the mixture. Be sure to dry the surface before starting to paint.

Now all that remains is to paint the window sill with the selected composition and dry it. It is better to leave the paint to dry naturally. For aerosols it takes up to 4-5 hours, other mixtures dry up to 9 hours.

Work progress

A very important stage of work is the preparation of paint and the method of applying it.

Paint and tools

There are several options to choose from:

It is best to use special paint for PVC and apply it with a spray; Let us remind you that to work with such paint you need to meet the conditions of the surrounding atmosphere - the temperature is within 18 degrees, and the humidity is as close to 80% as possible.

  • acrylic varnish - it will create a soft matte surface, here you will only have to work with a brush;
  • auto enamel also performs well;
  • nitro paint - some successfully use this too, although we advise you to constantly ventilate the room.

During painting work, we never forget about the rules of personal safety; the price of neglecting these rules is the health of you and your loved ones

Painting

The main stage of work will consist of:

  • in applying one layer of paint 80 microns thick;
  • or, if you need to get a metallic effect, you will have to do the entire painting in two layers:
  • the first is the main one, still 80 microns thick, which should dry for at least 10 hours;
  • the second is an auxiliary one made of colorless varnish.

It is worth paying attention to the experience of those who have already conducted these experiments with their windows. Here are tips from those who tried to get these chestnuts for us with their own hands:

Here are tips from those who tried to get these chestnuts for us with their own hands:

  • before applying the paint, it is very useful to treat the entire surface with fine sandpaper until it has a matte color;
  • after cleaning and sanding, some use a special primer for painting PVC; American versions of such a primer cost 2,000 rubles for 4.5 liters, but it will last for a very long time; (See also the article How to make a primer for putty.)

Such harmony is achieved by painting plastic windows and cornices to match the color of the surrounding decoration; instead of the combination of white - green - red, the result was only green and red

  • for cleaning, you can use a domestic cleaner for PVC - “Galamix”, its liter costs 150 rubles;
  • some do not at all hope for window protection in the form of all kinds of stickers and solve the problem radically - they completely dismantle the window structure;
  • and some generally consider painting plastic windows a wasteful task that should be avoided in every possible way, and if suddenly there is a need to change the color of the frames, then it is better to use all kinds of colored adhesive films, which are produced in a mind-blowing range of colors. (See also the article How to paint a window sill with your own hands.)

Whatever you say about the desire to be different from others, white window frames are still the best solution, but, indeed, the paths of aspirations are inscrutable

Materials and tools

To work with plastic you will need:

  • white spirit, alcohol or other solvent;
  • primer;
  • putty for filling irregularities;
  • fine-grain sandpaper: after processing the primer and the plastic itself with it, the paint sticks better;
  • aerosol can, for covering large objects with a spray gun, roller or brush;
  • rags or wipes for wiping;
  • masking tape to cover the surface that is not being treated;
  • sealant.

If you plan to use plastic in outdoor conditions, choose a special heat- and water-resistant paint for plastic. Such compositions should also not be afraid of ultraviolet rays.

To obtain an even, smooth surface, it is better to apply them using an aerosol. To coat large plastic objects, it is more convenient to use spray guns or rollers. When using brushes, choose products with the softest bristles that do not leave streaks.

Water-based acrylic paints

This is a fairly popular paint for wooden windows. It has high technical characteristics, the price of the material makes it affordable for buyers. The main substance is acrylic resin diluted with plain water. The paint is odorless, well suited for wood products, and does not emit harmful substances.

Positive properties include the cost-effectiveness of paint, the ability to dry quickly, and the ability to form a plastic coating, due to which the paint layer is not damaged by temperature changes. If you use colors, you can get any desired shade. The paint does not fade in the sun and does not lose color saturation. The material is not afraid of low temperatures, moisture, and is suitable for use both outdoors and indoors.

acrylic water-dispersion enamel for windows

Paint for window frames may contain other additives that enhance its characteristics, for example, various antiseptics to combat fungi and mold. When certain components are added, the material can become a serious fire hazard.

When coating the frame with fire retardant, coat the other components of the window with it; do not forget about the window sill, slopes, and other structural elements, which also consist of wood and can be damaged in a fire.

If the window includes metal elements, you cannot use paint designed for wood. For them, you should choose a similar one, but designed specifically for metal structures. For example, high-quality fire-retardant paints include Polistil.

Reasons for repainting windows

Windows made of polyvinyl chloride profiles are rarely touched upon during cosmetic renovations of buildings. But in some cases it is necessary to paint them too. This happens in the following situations:

  • the coating turned gray;
  • the plastic has turned yellow;
  • scratches and other defects have appeared that cannot be washed off or cleaned out;
  • the interior changes, and the snow-white color of the frames becomes inappropriate;
  • I had a desire to make my windows original, not like everyone else’s.

Manufacturers of PVC windows do not prohibit painting their products. Professional painting of plastic windows in various colors is often done using the lamination method - when a special laminating film is applied to the plastic. This can only be done by specialists with professional equipment. After this treatment, the windows receive, in addition to the new color, additional protection from ultraviolet radiation, high and low temperatures, aggressive chemicals, and precipitation. Another technology for processing window frames is spraying a layer of polyurethane enamel. Recently, window manufacturers, at the request of the client, paint polyvinyl chloride not in white, but with brown wood-like paint. But even the structure of this PVC is different. If the windows are already standing, then you will have to paint them yourself. In this case, you can get any color. This is interesting: painting wooden windows.

Advantages and disadvantages

The films produced by acrylic varnish are easy to clean; any detergents other than solvents can be used on them. Acrylic varnishes show high wear resistance; no defects form on them over time. An important plus is that this material is harmless to people. On a smooth PVC surface, one coat is enough for most paints; double coating is required only when applying compositions with a metallic effect, or in case of significant defects. This cost-effectiveness is one of the advantages of PVC painting.

What's suitable

It is clear that these problems can be solved in production, because in construction stores all MDF products are high-quality painted and smooth to the touch. Can you achieve this effect with your own hands?

We will return to the surface preparation process later. The main thing is to first figure out how to paint MDF at home. We will need special compounds with high covering power.

These include:

  • acrylic enamels and aerosol paints.
  • enamels made on alkyd-urethane, alkyd or oil based;
  • polyurethane enamels.

Acrylic enamels

This group is considered environmentally friendly because it is a water-dispersed composition based on acrylate or latex copolymers. Most manufacturers recommend their use in residential areas and even children's rooms.

Another plus is good protection of surfaces from moisture and temperature changes, which is quite important for furniture and sliding MDF screens in bathrooms.

The following formulations can most often be found on sale:

NameOptionsprice, rub.
Belinka AQUA EMAILThe composition is endowed with good hiding power, and upon application creates a glossy film. The manufacturer allows the composition to be applied over old paints and varnishes.
Be sure to use an insulating primer.

Among the features of this composition are:

  • high resistance to ultraviolet radiation;
  • Drying time for the layer is 4 hours.
590 for 0.75l; 1720 for 2.5l

Some of the presented compositions can also be used as an insulating primer. For such purposes, the manufacturer recommends diluting them with water in a ratio of 70% paint and 30% drinking water.

Before you paint a white MDF door to look like wood, be sure to:

  1. first apply a base layer of light paint, after which you can apply darker colors;
  2. Using a special rubber brush, without waiting for the second layer to dry, treat the surface to obtain the wood structure.

Alkyd and alkyd-urethane enamels

Another fairly large group of coloring compounds that allows you to paint MDF surfaces. If you don’t know how to repaint MDF furniture with your own hands, then for independent use I can recommend the products of the following manufacturers:

Polyurethane enamels

Polyurethane compounds are primarily interesting for their wear resistance and durability. Agree that even if you spend money on expensive paint, its service life should be maximum. In the case of the type in question, manufacturers guarantee at least 20 years!

So, what can you buy from this group in our country? Below we will take a closer look at some of these compositions:

Is it possible to paint already installed structures?

Already installed PVC windows can be painted if necessary. The process is complex, labor-intensive, and requires a certain skill. You can carry out the procedure yourself, following the painting technology, but if you do not have confidence in your abilities, it is better not to take risks, but to contact a specialized organization.

When is this required?

Painting profiles a different color may be required in certain cases:

  • yellowing of the original color due to time or exposure to the rays of the sun;
  • changing the interior of the room, into which white double-glazed windows do not fit;
  • the appearance of scratches on the frame, which occur due to mechanical stress from the use of prohibited care products.

Another reason to change the color of the window frame is simply to experiment with the color scheme of the frame.
