Sooner or later, any owner of a private house, apartment or office on the first floors thinks about security. Unfortunately, simply closing plastic windows is not enough to prevent criminals from entering. The statistics are inexorable:
- In private homes, 52% of penetrations occur through breaking into balcony doors, 27% through windows, only 13% through entrance doors, 7% through basements, garages and other objects.
- In apartments, 69% of thefts are carried out by breaking window sashes, 21% through balconies and 10% through doors.
Of course, the first thing a homeowner thinks about is installing an alarm system.
Undoubtedly, an electronic alert system for attempted entry is an effective method. But, even if you have an alarm system installed, security physically cannot arrive immediately after the sensor is triggered. Therefore, the thief has a few minutes at his disposal to take what is located in a visible place and successfully escape. Another option is to install video surveillance. Here the drawback is obvious: cameras do not prevent hacking, but simply record the fact that it is happening. Experienced thieves have long dressed so that their face is not visible on camera. Practice shows that alarms and video surveillance work much more effectively if they are supported by mechanical reinforcement, namely, anti-burglary methods that physically prevent intruders from getting inside. Most often in this case we are talking about roller shutters or grilles.
But what if both of these options are not suitable for technical or aesthetic reasons? For example, they visually spoil the facade, are prohibited from installation, or are simply inconvenient for owners.
Many are opponents of bars also because it is extremely difficult to get out of such a room in the event of a fire.
What to do if this option is not suitable? — Refer to modern industry developments:
- anti-burglary fittings
- safety double-glazed windows with triplex
It is these additional protective functions of modern glazing that will be discussed in our article today.
Anti-burglary window - why is it so important?
According to statistics, about 70% of burglaries are committed through windows, and not through doors, as it might seem at first glance. Burglary causes not only financial damage to homeowners, but also great moral harm.
Important : standard plastic, wooden and aluminum windows are not burglary resistant and can be opened in just 1 minute. |
If the windows are on:
- first floors;
- second floors, in the presence of canopies or other extensions that facilitate access to the window;
- top floors,
then they need protection.
Cost of installation and replacement services
On the Internet you can also find many offers from various companies about installing, replacing or adjusting trunnions. Average cost of a service performed by professionals :
- Adjustment of one element – from 100 rubles.
- Adjustment of all standard trunnions on one leaf - from 200-250 rubles.
- Adjustment of the position of anti-burglary pins along the perimeter of the sash - from 300-500 rubles.
- Installation of fittings - from 1 thousand rubles.
- A set of works to equip the door with anti-burglary fittings - from 1.5 thousand rubles.
All the services described above are offered not by private craftsmen, but by companies that have been operating in the market for a long time and provide a long-term guarantee on the result.
Anti-burglary classes of windows according to GOST
Anti-burglary class (burglary protection) - the degree of resistance of a window to force aimed at breaking the window and entering the building. |
According to GOST 31462 “Window protective blocks. General technical conditions”, burglary-resistant windows come in 6 classes (from lower to higher degree of protection):
- PV1;
- PV2;
- PV3;
- PV4;
- PV5;
- PV6.
Anti-burglary classes with PV1-PV2 are available in all manufacturers of window fittings.
The PVZ burglary resistance class, confirmed by a certificate, is provided by fittings from European brands.
Classes PV4-PV6 - do not belong to the window market. Security devices for windows of these classes are manufactured by special security companies. Windows of classes PV4, PV5, PV6 are intended for bank vaults, museums, special facilities, etc.
Photo: special anti-burglary windows of classes higher than PV-3 (RC-3)
Anti-burglary classes differ in:
- hacking tools;
- burglary resistance time.
Main classes of window burglary resistance according to GOST 31462-2011
Anti-burglary class | Hacking Tools | Burglary resistance time, min, not less |
PV1 | Burglary using physical force without the use of tools: kicking, shouldering, pulling out the door. | There are no burglary tests without tools. |
PV2 | Screwdriver, pliers; Wooden or plastic wedges; Metal saw; Gas key; Pipe wrench | 3 |
PV3 | Set of tools for PV2 and: Nail puller (crowbar), light hammer, mandrel, mechanical drill | 5 |
Note: the table does not show classes PV4 - PV6 (window fittings provide protection classes PV1 - PV-3). The burglar does not have information about the burglary resistance class of the product, is limited in time and tries to avoid noise. The burglar is willing to take little risk/only under certain conditions |
In the Russian window market, it is also customary to use European burglary resistance classes: RC1 - RC6 (or outdated European WK1 - WK6), which, in many respects, coincide with their Russian counterparts. Russian GOST was made on the basis of European requirements.
GOST recommends installing burglary-resistant windows of a class not lower than PV2.
Why is a PV2 class anti-burglary window a good anti-burglary option?
A 3-minute “resistance” to burglary does not mean that the window will be opened during this time. This is the minimum permissible period that the window must withstand. In Europe, there are the same requirements for anti-burglary windows. When purchasing real estate on credit, a mandatory requirement of insurance agents is the presence of anti-burglary windows and an alarm system. In the event of a break-in attempt, the police must arrive at the facility within 3 minutes, and the task of the window is to “hold out” during this time.
Triplex
Most people believe that glass is a fragile material. This is true if we are talking about simple glass, and not systems designed for increased strength and safety, such as triplex. It is these glasses that are used for the production of shop windows, windows in transport, as well as safety double-glazed windows for glazing private houses, shops, offices and apartments.
Triplex is an excellent option for protection against penetration through a broken window. In addition, such double-glazed windows have a number of advantages, which we will also talk about.
What is triplex?
This is a translucent structure for universal use, consisting of several glass sheets connected to each other by a polymer film. The main physical properties of the finished structure: resistance to aggressive physical influences and safety for humans. It perfectly protects the room from the penetration of noise and cold, and also gives the room a finished look with the proper use of design tools.
Such glass is much more difficult to break, but even if this happens, it simply cracks and does not crumble.
The degree of protection directly depends on the number of layers and thickness of the triplex. This value can be varied and it determines the functional purpose of this product.
Manufacturing technology
There are two similar methods for producing triplex: lamination using a layer of film and cast-in technology.
- In the first option, polyvinyl butyral film (PVB) is placed between two crystal clear glass sheets. Then, the resulting set is placed in an autoclave, where the film polymerizes at temperatures above 100 C, ensuring strong bonding of the layers without distorting their transparency.
- The second involves pouring liquid polymer between glass sheets. Polymerization (gluing) occurs due to heat treatment under the influence of UV radiation.
Mechanism of action
It is important to understand that the properties of glass themselves do not change during the manufacturing process of triplex, it does not become harder or denser. The polymer acts as an adhesive, and strength and safety are ensured due to the two-layer structure and the fact that when broken, the fragments will not crumble, but will remain in place. Externally, such a coating will simply crack.
Also, the triplex structure has increased flexibility due to the film, which means it is less susceptible to deformation.
Most specialists offer the installation of triplex structures, as they perform several basic glazing functions at once:
- They ensure safety when installed in children's rooms, rooms with a large flow of people, when using panoramic glazing, balconies with solid double-glazed windows, as well as in rooms where there is an increased likelihood of damage (entertainment centers, bars, gyms, schools, special institutions, etc.). Another area of application for such glass in a multilayer design is transparent and decorative floors between floors or on balconies (withstands a load of more than 500 kg/m2).
- They have a certain protective effect against burglary. We can talk about this if we are talking about double glazing (6.38 - * - 6.38).
- They guarantee reliable sound insulation, especially in the 6.38-6.38 or 6.38-5-6.38 or 4-6.38-4 versions. They are recommended for use in objects with increased noise (near tram or railway lines, airport, industrial zone, highway, noisy street). Triplex reduces noise levels by at least 15-20% more than standard double-glazed windows (up to 38 dB is lost)
- Almost 100% protects against the harmful effects of UV rays (burnout and overheating of nearby objects). Therefore, they are widely used for installation on shop windows and large façade structures.
- Has high light transmittance. Additional illumination helps save on energy and plays an important role for rooms where high-quality color rendering is important (beauty salons, photo studios, galleries, etc.).
- Offers wide design options. In production, you can use not only transparent, but also colored polymer films. This means that various color solutions are available to order, as well as tinted options. Another example of stylish decor is glass with stained glass and fabric patterns, the use of overlays and sandblasting technology, which allows you to create different effects and patterns, including a matte surface.
Anti-burglary window – comprehensive protection
Compliance of a window with the anti-burglary class is achieved only with comprehensive protection. You can equip a window with PV2 class fittings, but you should understand that under protection there will only be a risk of pressing the sash. The glass unit will remain unprotected.
A burglary-resistant window according to GOST must be comprehensively protected by:
- profile;
- accessories;
- glass unit;
- window installation, etc.
The choice of these window components is intended to provide the appropriate burglary resistance class.
The regulatory framework in Russia in the field of burglary-resistant windows is limited, in contrast, for example, to the European one, where more detailed (clear) requirements for window production and installation are imposed. The main Russian requirements for the profile and glass unit of a burglary-resistant window are given in the table below.
Requirements for a regular window (GOST 30674) and a burglar-resistant window (GOST 31462)
Window element | Parameter | Regular window | Anti-burglary window |
Window profile | Share of secondary raw materials to primary | Not standardized | No more than 15% |
Presence of steel reinforcement in the frame, sash, impost:
|
| Always | |
Steel reinforcement thickness:
|
| Not less than 1.8 mm | |
Step of fastening steel reinforcement:
|
|
| |
Double-glazed window | Exterior glass | Standard | Triplex (recommended) |
Additional fixation of the glass unit | Not required | Gluing of double-glazed windows (allowed). According to European requirements, depending on the anti-burglary class, the insert is required. Also, instead of gluing, you can install aluminum corners on the inner glass side, which are attached to the sash reinforcement and do not allow the glass unit to be squeezed out from the outside. |
Quality mark RAL RG 607/13
If the hardware successfully passes the initial tests carried out by the Association for Quality Control of Locks and Fittings and complies with all current standards, the hardware manufacturer has the right to apply for the assignment of the RAL quality mark
.
A window equipped with similar fittings, with a handle with a locking device and hooks that are attached to PVC profile reinforcements, can be designated as a “window that complies with the AhS Standard
or
Extra according to RAL-RG 607/13
". This name can be confirmed by a certificate issued by one of the accredited institutes.
What should be the fittings for a burglary-resistant window?
The anti-burglary window fittings differ from the usual kit. First of all, it is characterized by the following requirements, presented in the table below.
Requirements for fittings in a burglary-resistant window according to GOST 31462
Fitting element | Regular window | Anti-burglary window |
Striker | Standard | Reinforced |
Mounting the strike plate | 1 point in plastic | 3 points (1 in plastic, 2 in steel) |
Locking pin | Standard | Mushroom reinforced |
Distance between hinges and locking points | No more than 700 mm | No more than 650 mm |
Window handle | Standard | Special with key |
Steel plate from drilling | Not required | Mandatory |
Elements of anti-burglary fittings:
1. Anti-burglary pins on the sash fittings. Conventional pins are cylindrical in shape, while anti-burglar pins are mushroom-shaped. They are also called mushroom-shaped. The figure below shows the different types of trunnions using Roto fittings as an example:
- locking pin E – a standard cylindrical pin for a regular window with adjustable pressure of the sash to the frame;
- locking pin P – anti-burglary mushroom-shaped pin with adjustable pressure of the sash to the frame;
- locking pin V – anti-burglary mushroom-shaped pin with adjustment of the pressure of the sash to the frame and the height of the pin (required if the size of the sash is smaller than necessary or the size of the frame is larger than necessary - the height of the pin can achieve the required depth of engagement with the strike plate). For a burglary-resistant window, this is a must.
Photo: different types of locking pins in Roto* fittings
2. Anti-burglary strikers. The anti-burglar strike plate differs from the usual one in its more durable design and a larger number of attachment points - 3 versus 1 for the usual one. The shape of the anti-burglary strip is such that the anti-burglary pin included in it cannot be disengaged from its engagement by pressing the sash away from the frame. With this movement, the protruding “mushroom-shaped” (like a mushroom cap) part of the trunnion will rest against the protrusions of the anti-burglar strike plate. The designs of regular and anti-burglary strikers, as well as the direction of movement of the trunnion when pressing the sash, are shown in the figure below using Roto fittings as an example.
A burglary-resistant window has more locking points than a regular one, at least 6. For a regular window of a standard size - 4. A large-sized burglary-resistant window can have 10 points, a tilt-and-turn balcony door - 12. The basic principle is that the distance between the locking points should not be more than 650 mm.
Photo: designs of the standard and Roto anti-burglary strikers, and the engagement assembly of the anti-burglary pin and the plate (left). The green arrow shows the direction of movement of the sash when pressed away from the frame
An important point is the correct fastening of anti-burglary strikers. One self-tapping screw fastens the strip into plastic in the same way as a regular strip, and 2 are required into the steel reinforcement of the frame or impost. To do this, the reinforcement must have the correct shape and a certain position of the walls in the window profile.
The figure below shows the options for “correct” and “incorrect” reinforcement inside the profile.
Photo: Correct reinforcement numbered “1” (closed reinforcement) and “2” (“p”-shaped reinforcement with a wall inside the profile). “Incorrect” reinforcement is shown in option “3”. The red dot shows where the self-tapping screw will be for attaching the anti-burglar strike plate. In option “3”, the self-tapping screw will only secure the strip into the plastic.
3. Handle with key . For a burglary-resistant window, GOST requires a window handle with a key. In the closed position of the window, the handle can be locked so that a burglar cannot move the locking pins and open the window;
4. Steel plate from drilling . A hardened steel plate is attached to the main lock of the sash from the outside and does not allow the window handle pin to be drilled out from the outside.

There are a number of other requirements for anti-burglary fittings.

Anti-burglary fittings
This article discusses the basics of a burglary-resistant structure from the point of view of the use of fittings.
Anti-burglary in tilting mode – new possibilities for anti-burglary windows
A common case of breaking a modern window is when the window was in the tilt ventilation mode. This applies not only to windows with a standard set of elements, but also to burglary-resistant windows. Owners of the latter often believe that if the window is burglar-resistant, then even in tilting mode it retains its protective properties. Actually this is not true.
The option of window protection in the tilting ventilation mode appeared on the window market not so long ago - since 2022. Burglar resistance in the tilting mode maintains the protection class at the PV2 level. Special anti-burglary strikers (3 pieces per window) of a more complex design are used, which make it possible to maintain the engagement of the sash with the frame in the tilting mode. The appearance of the strip and its operation are shown in the figure below using Roto fittings as an example.

Summarize
Anything can be hacked, but the main question is how long will it take a thief to do this? In our opinion, the use of anti-burglary fittings in combination with triplex double-glazed windows and electronic means, such as alarms and video recording, will allow you not only to sleep peacefully at night, but also not to worry when you leave home or dacha for a long time. This guarantees that it will be quite difficult for a criminal to enter the premises, and it does not matter whether he decides to break the window or tries to open the sash. It is the long time and difficulties that arise in the process that will most likely become decisive in the failure of criminal intentions. Often, it is the psychological factor that is triggered, and the attacker abandons the idea of hacking into a protected object. This way you will not only preserve your property, but also avoid unpleasant moments associated with replacing broken glass, locks, etc.
Burglar-resistant fittings Roto NX – reliable window protection
The world leader in the production of tilt-and-turn fittings for windows and doors, Roto Frank, has in its assortment all the necessary elements for burglary-resistant windows:
- when closed, such a window can correspond to the highest class among window fittings - PV3 (RC3). Roto NX window fittings have voluntary RC3 conformity certification;
- in the tilting position of the sash, class PV2 (RC2) is achieved when the window is equipped with special anti-burglary strikers. The figure below shows the fitting diagrams for a burglar-resistant window (RC2) and with safe tilt ventilation (Tilt Safe RC2).
Photo: Roto NX sets with burglary resistance class RC2 and Tilt Safe RC2 (RC2 in tilt mode)* The basic package of Roto fittings includes 1 anti-burglary element - a tilt-and-turn response film. Together with the mushroom-shaped P axle, it allows the axle to remain engaged with the strike plate, preventing the sash from being pressed out. This will make it more difficult for an intruder to finally open the window.

What it is?
A pin for PVC windows is one of the most important elements of fittings, which is designed to lock the movable sash of a window structure. When you turn the handle, the bolt in the window lock rotates, which activates the lever with the bar mounted on the end surface of the sash.
The bar slides vertically up or down, and on its outer plane are fixed cylindrical steel parts - axles, which extend behind the clamping bar mounted on a stationary frame of the translucent structure. Thus, when turning the handle, the window sash is securely locked.
Anti-burglary window or grille?
Metal bars still “spoil” the lives of property owners on the first and last floors. Life behind bars is not the most comfortable option.
Photo: bars on the window - when the house is like a prison
In addition to psychological discomfort, bars can cause death in a fire, when it is impossible to find the key and get out through the window. The statistics of such consequences are sad. For a burglar who knows that there is a grill on the window, it is not difficult to remove it in a minute using modern hydraulic shears.
A burglary-resistant window is no different in appearance from a regular one, and will come as a big surprise to a criminal.
