Anti-burglary fittings. What the consumer needs to know

When choosing a metal-plastic window, most consumers do not pay due attention to the fittings. And this is a mistake, since the fittings are perhaps the most important components of a PVC window. By means of the parts of the design under consideration, the window sash is opened, closed and fixed in various positions.

The fittings also ensure a tight fit of the sash to the frame, so the service life of the plastic window or door as a whole depends on its reliability and proper installation.

Maco fittings - what a beast

MACO is an Austrian company founded in 1947 by Lorenz Mayer in the city of Altenmarkt. Originally, the name was later shortened to "MACO". Since then, the company has successfully developed and today has several enterprises in different countries of the world producing high-quality MACO fittings. Quality control of the production of fittings and materials allows the company to provide a functional guarantee for products for 10 years or 20,000 opening cycles.

Despite the high quality, the fittings may require adjustment. We remind you that adjustment of fittings on windows manufactured and installed by our company is carried out free of charge within 30 days after installation. During this time, all the shortcomings in adjusting the fittings during production and after installation usually become apparent. Therefore, during this time, we recommend that you periodically check the operation of the fittings on all sashes of your new windows in order to submit a request for adjustment in a timely manner.

We pay special attention to the fact that if the sash does not open or close, you should not use excessive force - you can damage the wooden window, and the case will not be covered under warranty! In any case, having a technician come out for adjustments will cost less than repairing a window or restoring its paintwork!

If you still decide to make the adjustment yourself, we’ll tell you the main points. First of all, terms relevant to the matter.

Interface system, rebate, overlap, rebate play

Each fitting is created by the manufacturer for a specific mating system, which includes the dimensions of the gap, the width of the sash overlap and the distance to the axis of the fitting groove. In our windows we use the 12/20-9 mating system, where 12 mm is the gap, 20 mm is the width of the sash overlap, 9 mm is the distance to the axis of the fitting groove.

As can be seen from the figure, in the field of production of windows, balcony and entrance doors, the term “leaf size”, unlike interior doors, is not used, since the “leaf” has different sizes. The most commonly used size of the sash is the rebate. It is from the lower rebate of the sash that, say, the height of the axis of the window handle is measured.

The clearance contains fittings, and the reliability and duration of its operation depend on the accuracy of the clearance size. Therefore, if you have problems with closing or opening the sashes, you should first of all check the gap in both the height and width of the window. To do this, the dimensions along the rebate of the sash and window frame are measured, then the size along the rebate of the sash is subtracted from the size along the frame rebate. For a 12/20-9 mating system with a clearance of 12 mm, the difference should be 24 mm in both height and width.

The window sash is locked and the seals are pressed using pins and strikers. Trunnions are installed on the sash, and strikers are installed on the window frame. When the window handle is turned to the “Open” position (the handle is installed horizontally), the trunnions move down and come out of the strikers, which allows you to open the sash. When the handle is moved to the “Closed” position (the handle is vertically down), the trunnions rise up, enter the strikers and lock the window, pressing the seals.

In the “Tilted” and “Micro-slot ventilation” positions (if the window is equipped with it), the trunnions also come out of the counter strips, but in this case the scissors are released (installed on the upper hinge) and the folding support trunnion (installed below on the side of the handle) engages. At the same time, the sash rotates on a folding support and a lower hinge, and the scissors hold its upper edge. If the clearance is too reduced, the trunnions cling to the base of the strikers; if the clearance is too large, it will be impossible to lock the window (the trunnions do not reach the strikers).

Next, we will consider several typical cases of hardware malfunction and ways to eliminate them.

More on the topic How to repair plastic window fittings

What does plastic window fittings consist of?

We found out above that the fittings of plastic windows consist of a large number of elements, each of which is designed in its own way. Let's briefly go over each of them below:

Pen

The standard set includes a screw with fastening, an overlay and the handle itself. The materials are plastic, metal, wood. In addition to stationary ones, manufacturers produce removable handles. Some are equipped with a lock. There are anti-burglary handles that have a built-in mechanism that blocks the window if you try to get inside from the street.

Loops

They have several variations:

  • Overheads can be detachable or one-piece, as well as rotary or tilt-and-turn.
  • There are anti-burglary ones with special plates that cannot be disassembled when the sash is closed.
  • There are screw-in hinges on threaded pins.
  • Inconspicuous loop designs are appreciated by lovers of stylish interiors. Elements of such hinges are not visible from the front side of the window. Invisible hinges seriously improve thermal protection.

Seals

They conserve heat and provide the sash with reliable contact with the window profile. They resist deformation well, are elastic, and come in different colors and cross-sections. Made from modified plastic, rubber, rubber.

Brush seals, which combine a polypropylene-coated woven base with silicone-treated bristles, are popular in sliding windows.

Window latches

Latches for plastic windows allow you to fix the sash without using a handle. You can simply push the open window and when it closes, it will lock and will not dangle back and forth.

Of course, if you press on the window from the outside, the sash will open, so you shouldn’t rely on the latches alone. It is best to use them in conjunction with window handles.

Locks for plastic windows

Window locks are not even a superfluous element of plastic window fittings, because... they will protect your life and property.

Window locks are divided into:

  • Single-locking – locked at one point.
  • Multi-locking – when locked, they are fixed at several points using a movable bolt.

You can additionally install overhead decorative bolts or latches. Currently, they are available in abundance in various shapes and colors.

Window sills

Window sills for plastic windows are:

  • External - they are also called ebb tides.
  • Internal - they are located indoors, respectively.

For low tides, the best material is painted or galvanized sheet metal. As a result, the ebb looks nice and does not cause any trouble.

There are also plastic external flashings, but you should not choose them, because... when exposed to low and high temperatures, they often become deformed.

Internal window sills are made from the following materials:

  • Wood shavings (chipboard, MDF) - on the outside, such window sills are covered with a laminated layer of any color at your request.

  • Plastic (PVC) is the most common type of window sills and the most reliable. Maintenance of such a window sill is minimal.

The handle is hard to turn

The most common reason for this phenomenon is unlubricated fittings. Modern window fittings require lubrication of moving parts at least once a year. You can time this work to coincide with spring or autumn window washing, or better yet, both. Lubrication points are shown in the figure below.

If lubrication does not help, then perhaps the trunnions are set to a strong clamp, and large deformation of the seals when closing the sash leads to a large force on the handle. The pressure is loosened using a spanner wrench (or pliers if it is not available) for conventional trunnions and a 4 mm hex wrench for iS trunnions, guided by the figure below. It should be noted that excessive loosening of the clamp can lead to loose locking of the sash and blowing.

So, in the following figure, turning the trunnion along the blue arrow will weaken the pressure, and turning it along the red arrow will strengthen it.

Blowing from under the seals

Blowing from under the sash seals can occur due to weak pressure through manipulations with the trunnions described above. If it is blowing in the area of the top hinge, you can adjust the pressure on the scissors using a 4 mm hex key, following the drawing. By rotating the key, the eccentric should be moved towards the sash.

Another source of this defect may be an old, dried out, lost elasticity or even torn seal. Such a seal should be replaced, especially since it is not difficult - it is installed in the grooves of the sash and is not glued to anything. Simply remove the old seal from the groove and insert the new one, cutting it at the corners as you did on the old one. To prevent seals from drying out, use liquid silicone grease at least once a year.

The sash touches the frame at the bottom

The most common cause of this malfunction is the leaf being left in the open position for a long time. This is especially true for large and heavy balcony door leaves, which remain open almost throughout the warm season. In the fall, it turns out that the edge of the sash farthest from the hinges is clinging to the frame. In such cases, they say that the sash is “sagging”.

The sash can also “sag” after prolonged use, especially in the case of frequent opening and closing. The point here is that the trunnions rise upward when closing, overcoming friction with the counter bars. In this case, the sash experiences a force directed downward.

If the sash just drops down, with no or very slight distortion, the easiest thing you can do is to lift it on the bottom hinge. To do this, remove the plastic cylinder-shaped cover on the bottom hinge; to do this, simply pull it up. You will need a 4mm hex key.

How to do this is shown in the figure below. Rotating the screw along the red arrow will raise the sash, rotating along the blue arrow will lower it (if it touches from above). In most cases, such adjustment is sufficient to eliminate the defect.

Different gaps around the perimeter of the sash

Symptoms of this malfunction may include the sash touching the frame in various places or the inability to lock the window (the pins do not reach the strikers). The first thing to do with this defect, before adjusting the fittings, is to make sure that the frame and sash are in the correct rectangular shape. The easiest way to do this is by measuring the diagonals - they should be equal on both the frame and the sash.

If the diagonals are significantly different and the window has acquired the shape of a parallelogram, then adjustment may not help. This will require serious repairs or even the manufacture of a new product. If the sash touches the frame approximately in the middle of the height (or width), you should check the vertical (horizontal) bars of the frame for straightness.

This happens when “saving” anchor plates - when expanding, the mounting foam presses the frame inward. In this case, the window should be remounted by installing more anchor plates on those sides where there is deflection and re-foaming the mounting seams.

If everything is in order with the geometry, then you can start adjusting using a 4 mm hex key. The most important thing is to correctly understand exactly how the sash is skewed in relation to the frame and what needs to be turned where. The skew of the sash can be determined by placing a sheet of paper on the frame and pressing it with the sash. Next, on the sheet with a pencil (carefully, without pressing, so as not to damage the paint), mark the position of the overlap of the sash. We remove the sheet and measure the distance from its bend to the drawn line.

Fortunately, in addition to the height adjustment already discussed, there are only two left. The first moves the sash left and right at the top hinge, the second moves the sash left and right at the bottom hinge. Each individual adjustment, of course, also ensures rotation of the sash relative to another hinge (the upper one relative to the lower one and vice versa). The upper adjustment is located on the scissors, the lower adjustment is located in the lower hinge hinge, both adjustments are made by rotating the screws and are shown in the pictures below.

How to adjust the sash horizontally

Adjusting the sash horizontally in the bottom hinge

Sometimes the window sash takes incorrect horizontal positions (↔). In this case, we will “build” the lower loop and tilt-and-turn scissors.

Adjusting the bottom loop

Let's start with the loop. To adjust the horizontal position of the window sash, look for the second screw in it - on the side at its base. Found it? So turn it around.

Moving the key clockwise means moving the door closer to the hinge, counter-clockwise means moving it away.

Adjusting the scissors

Screw for horizontal scissor adjustment

Next, adjust the top of the sash. That is, adjust the scissors. To do this, open the sash and find the adjusting screw on them - it should be on the fixed bar of the scissors.

Proceed as in the previous case. When finished, check the position of the sash with a plumb line. Or measure the overlap of the side of the sash - at the bottom and at the top.

Micro-lift, micro-ventilation and false opening blocker

A very important element of window fittings. Thanks to the microlift, the sash will serve you even longer. A microlift is a special mechanism located on the side of the sash and designed to lift the sash at the moment of closing.

This happens as follows: At the moment of closing the sash, the microlift first comes into contact with the counterpart on the sash frame, thereby lifting it. Thus, the aggravating load is removed from the hinges, and the sash closes more softly. Also, a microlift will not allow your window sash to sag.

Another important advantage of the microlift is that it functions as an erroneous opening blocker. When the sash is in the folding position, the upper hinge moves away from the frame along with the sash.

Therefore, if you tilt the sash and then, from the tilted position, try to open it by turning the handle, the sash will open and will hang on just one hinge. In this case, if you pull it carelessly, you can break the sash. The erroneous opening blocker will not allow you to make this movement. It will protect your sash from turning the handle in tilt mode.

Over time, window sashes may sag. This can happen if your sash is too heavy and spends a lot of time in the open position. It is in the open, not in the folding one. In this case, under the force of gravity, the sash sags over time. A sagging sash catches the frame at the moment of closing. If you do not take any action, then over time the sash may already scratch the frame.

If this happens, you will need window repairs or adjustments. But, fortunately, Maco fittings provide the ability to freely and easily adjust the sashes. Everything is very simple. It’s so simple that you can’t even imagine it. Due to its complexity and the presence of a huge number of parts, Maco fittings are easily adjusted even by a child.

How to adjust the window sash yourself? Very simple. To do this, it is enough to have a regular hexagon and a key. Each hinge has 3 or 4 holes, by acting on which you can easily adjust the sash. It can be tilted, raised, lowered, slightly changed the angle, the pressing force. In order to adjust the window sash, there is no need to call a special technician, you can do it yourself.

Additional protection methods

Anti-burglary fittings for windows are far from the only element of protection. The profile itself is also of great importance. In our work, we use exclusively the German Rehau profile, which is not only highly reliable and durable, but also has a special design: the Eurogroove (element for fastening fittings) is shifted closer to the center of the profile section, which significantly increases its resistance to burglary using a mount or other similar tools designed for pressing out sashes.

Even if an attacker breaks a double-glazed window, which in itself is a noisy and labor-intensive task, he is unlikely to be able to get inside due to protruding fragments, which are almost impossible to remove. In addition, at the request of the client, we can equip burglary-resistant plastic windows with a special anti-vandal film, which significantly increases the impact resistance of the glass. It is extremely difficult to break a glass unit equipped with such a film, but even if an attacker manages to break the glass, the film itself will remain intact in any case.

Burglar-resistant windows are the best guarantee for the safety of your home! In our work, we use the most modern technologies and high-quality materials - this gives us confidence that each of our clients is reliably protected from any possible trouble.

Installation of plastic windows in winter

Many apartment owners are skeptical about installing plastic windows in winter. They say that sub-zero temperatures negatively affect the quality of installation and can even lead to damage to the window structure. However, practice shows that this opinion is absolutely wrong. In fact, winter is an even more convenient period for installing windows than summer. Of course, weather conditions impose their limitations on the installation process, but in general there are no contraindications to work during this period of time.

Converting fittings to summer or winter mode

Maco fittings have two opening modes. summer and winter. In summer mode, the sash is pressed weaker than in winter mode. Translating the fittings is quite simple. In order to switch the fittings to summer or winter modes, just turn the special oval pin on the side of the sash.

The trunnion is made in the shape of an oval and is located on the side of the sash. The larger the sash, the more counter pins it has. They can be located on the side, top and bottom of the sash. Switching the fittings to summer or winter mode is done with ordinary pliers. By turning the trunnion just 90 degrees, you will switch the fittings to summer or winter mode.

Also, the trunnions in Maco fittings have a longer stroke compared to other types of fittings. Thanks to this, your sashes are more protected from burglary, and also keep your windows in the closed position more securely.

The best fittings for plastic windows: manufacturer ratings

Sophisticated buyers choose products from manufacturers with a good reputation. Although their product is more expensive, in the future it will cost much less than expensive repairs. The well-known phrase about the miser who pays twice is still relevant today.

The first lines in the ranking of companies producing high-quality accessories are Roto, Maco, Siegenia-Aubi, Winkhaus, Gu, Vhs.

Note: you can find the brand name by slightly opening the window sash: usually the markings are applied to the steel parts of the equipment.

Hidden hinges in Maco fittings

Innovation from the Maco company (Mako) - hidden hinges. From us you can order plastic windows with hidden hinges. Windows with hidden hinges are a revolutionary innovation in the window fittings market. You will not see the hinges on the windows that we are all used to; they will be hidden. This will give your window originality, and will also increase its security, since windows with hidden hinges are very difficult to break into.

Windows with hidden hinges can open 110 degrees, providing almost full opening. In addition to aesthetic properties and increased safety, windows with hidden hinges will protect your windows from blowing in the hinge area. You will be surprised, but sometimes, in some cases and under certain conditions, this happens. Well, the last advantage of windows with hidden hinges is the ability to fix the sash in a rotary mode.

If you open a regular sash, releasing the handle will cause the sash to wobble in its position by a few millimeters; also, if the wind blows, the sash may slam shut, since it is not secured in any way in the open position. In windows with hidden Maco hinges, in the open position the sash comes into contact with the frame, thereby creating such a frictional force that the sash will be fixed in the open position.

Types of fittings for plastic windows

The characteristics of window mechanisms are varied. This helps you calculate your budget and decide which features you need most. Manufacturers of window fittings focus on different target audiences. One product is suitable for elite mansions, another for middle-class housing, and a third for any residents of panel high-rise buildings.

I don't recommend saving. Those manufacturers of accessories for plastic windows that have proven themselves and are generally recognized provide more guarantees that repairs, adjustments and replacement of parts will not be needed throughout the entire period of use.

The fittings are selected according to the following characteristics:

  • opening method;
  • installation method;
  • degree of reliability;
  • materials.

The classic method of opening is a hinged one. Another common method is a folding one, suitable for ventilation. The main hardware components here are complemented by limiters that prevent sudden swinging due to gusts of wind. The sliding mechanism, which has its own differences, is gaining popularity.

Fasteners can be installed in an open or closed manner. The open one is more accessible, but closed structures are more attractive in appearance, which allows you to carefully consider the design of the room.

Manufacturers of window fittings for plastic frames pay particular attention to strength. On high floors windows are exposed to strong winds, on lower floors there is a risk of burglary. The mechanisms must withstand the weight of the doors and stop intruders, if not completely, then for enough time for the security systems to react. Reliability is achieved by using special locking devices and high-quality materials. I recommend avoiding flimsy plastic.

For families with children, it is better to install window handles with a key. An alternative is removable handles and special locks that prevent a child from accidentally opening the sash and falling out of the window. The main thing is to keep the keys out of the baby’s reach to avoid tragedy. If pets live in the apartment, it is worth installing a reinforced mosquito net or “anti-cat” so that the animal cannot jump out while hunting for flying birds.

Appearance becomes an important characteristic. Manufacturers of fittings for PVC windows produce, in addition to white handles and hinges, parts of any shade (the most popular metal ones are gold, silver, titanium, copper, chrome, etc.) and textures. This allows you to keep the entire house or apartment in the same style.

Where is the best place to use Maco fittings?

On good windows. Why? Because there is no point in installing good window fittings on average quality windows. It is for this reason that we install Maco fittings in our windows. That is why we have no complaints from customers regarding any defects in window fittings. We don't skimp on good things. Moreover, we include in each of our windows an erroneous opening blocker, a micro-lift, micro-ventilation, and the ability to switch the fittings to summer and winter modes. And you don't have to pay for it separately. We do this at our own expense!

Recommendations for adjusting MACO fittings

What distinguishes MASO fittings from others, except those of purely European origin?

1. Silber-look silver surface. 2. The ability to replace any element of the fittings, regardless of the year of production, with a new one; all elements are interchangeable. 3. Stamp with the production date on all significant elements, 10-year warranty, or 20,000 operating cycles. 4. Three anti-corrosion layers protect the fittings from corrosion: - zinc is applied to steel, 4-15 microns thick; — three-valent chromium is applied to the zinc layer using the chromate method and gives the surface a silver color; — the last layer is a wax coating, which improves corrosion protection, reduces friction of mechanisms, we get a uniform surface without purple tints. 5. Lifter-blocker of erroneous action in standard equipment: - prevents sagging of the sash during window operation; — eliminates the possibility of mistakenly opening and simultaneously tilting the sash. 6. Micro-ventilation - in standard installed scissors, providing air to the room in cold weather, in accordance with hygienic standards accepted in Europe 45-50 m3 per hour. At temperatures down to -15°C outside and indoor temperatures of 22-24°C, the room does not become overcooled. 7. Many adjustments and their wide range, allows in 100% of cases to ensure good operation of the product 8 Manufacturing of fittings in only two factories in Austria is a guarantee of high reliability of fittings elements and their quality.

How to properly adjust a window

The key to your success is compliance in the workshop with all technical conditions and recommendations of the hardware manufacturer for its installation. The foundation of these requirements is compliance with clearance. Rebate is the gap between the frame rebate and the sash rebate, in which, in fact, the fittings work. It should be 12 millimeters.

Compliance with this value is very important, since the overlap of the sash on the frame directly depends on it. If the FL is reduced, the likelihood of seasonal visits to adjust fittings during the warranty period increases.

The linear expansion of the PVC profile reaches 3 mm per 1 linear meter of the profile. If the FL is increased, the likelihood that the sash seal will rest on the edge of the frame increases.

The first thing you should do is check the overlap around the perimeter. Ideally, it should be 8 mm, because... overlay - 20 mm, 12 of them go to clearance. With the window closed, draw the edge of the overlap along the frame with a sharp pencil, open it and measure the distance from the frame fold to the pencil mark. If the overlap is greater or less, or the sash does not lie level, adjustments must be made.

We recommend starting with the bottom loop.

To align the sash vertically, you need to use the adjustment on the lower sash hinge. It is made with a 4 mm hexagon. When the screw is screwed in clockwise, the sash rises to the top; when turned counterclockwise, the sash lowers.

There are 2 horizontal adjustments: the first adjustment is on the bottom hinge support.

The second one is in scissors. It is necessary to check the result of both adjustments, because activating only 1 of them can lead to misalignment of the sash. Special cases that may hinder you: a crooked frame due to foam, or stretched by anchors; poorly unpacked sash. The second is adjusting the lifter.

This is a very important unit that helps prevent the sash from sagging when the window is closed.

There is an opinion that the sash only sags in the open position. This is wrong. When closing the window, the trunnions go up, and, meeting the strikers, due to the force of friction, as well as overcoming the resistance of the compressed seal, they push the sash down.

There are always small gaps in the sash, for example, between the double-glazed window and the sash itself, and small deformations of the sash also occur in the corners where there is no reinforcement. For this reason, static load on a closed window will inevitably lead to sagging unless the window is equipped with a lifter.

A correctly adjusted lifter is actually the third point of support for the window, and by transferring part of the weight of the sash to the impost, onto the frame, it unloads the hinge group.

The lifter is adjusted so that its lower edge is 1-1.5 mm below the strike plate area.

Using a T15 Torx wrench, loosen the screw and move the slider to the desired position. Adjustment range – 6 mm. For your convenience, there is a millimeter scale on the lifter, and the slider itself moves along notches in 0.5 mm increments. Thus, MASO engineers provided the possibility of precise adjustment of the lifter.

If you are working with a balcony door, you need to adjust the balcony latch so that its plastic tongue engages the lifter striker by 2 mm. Adjustment is made with a 4 mm hexagon, its range is 4 mm. When the screw is screwed in, the plastic tab rises, and when turned out, it lowers.

Third, check and adjust the pressure. The pressing of the sash to the frame can be checked with a caliper using a depth gauge.

In addition, there is another method, using simple office paper with a density of 80 g/sq.m. A corner of the paper is placed under 1 contour of the seal between the pressure points, the window closes, and your task now, when pulling out the paper, is to remember the force with which it is removed. Having found the place where this force is weakest, you need to compensate for the insufficient pressure with adjustments. The pressure at the bottom hinge is adjusted with a TORX 15 key.

The locking pins are adjusted with a spanner. The pressure in the scissors is adjusted with a 4 mm hexagon.

How not to make a mistake in choosing

Fittings of mediocre quality will not last long, because PVC windows are used intensively and are opened and closed many times every day. What you need to do to avoid regretting your purchase later:

  • Decide for yourself which method of opening the doors in a particular case will be optimal.
  • Measure the parameters of the window and choose a set of fittings that corresponds to the obtained dimensions.
  • Buy products with the brand of a company with a good reputation.
  • Choose components made from quality materials. Do not be seduced by cheap plastic parts: their service life is short. It's better to stick with metal kits.
  • Make sure that there are no burrs on the parts; the metal parts must be perfectly smooth and even.
  • Make sure that the parts have at least 2 holes for fastening.

Note: a large variety of decorative overlays with a limited choice of fittings itself should alert you: there is a high probability that the product has flaws that need to be disguised.

How to adjust MACO fittings yourself?

What to do when you need to adjust the window sash, but you can’t call a technician, for example, on weekends? Global hardware manufacturer MACO has developed convenient and clear instructions for users on how to properly adjust their products. Moreover, specialists from a well-known brand have created a guide that allows you to prevent and avoid problems with fittings. It turns out that learning this tricky business on your own is not at all difficult.

Adjust the sash horizontally (right-left)

Incorrect horizontal position can be corrected by adjusting the lower, upper hinge and swing-out scissor mechanism.

Bottom Hinge Adjustment

First the loops. Find the second screw on the side, near the base of the sash. We will regulate it. By moving the key non-clockwise, you move the door away from the hinge; by moving it clockwise, you move it closer.

Adjusting the top hinge

We open the sash: on top, near the hinge, there is a slot in which there is an element, by adjusting which we correct the incorrect position. We use a hex key, turning it left or right.

Adjusting the scissors

Now you need to adjust the scissors, which are located at the top of the sash. Locate the adjusting screw on the stationary bar of the scissors. Operate it clockwise or counterclockwise as in the previous description. At the end, you need to check the position of the sash with a plumb line. You can measure the overlap by going around its entire perimeter so that it is uniform.

Checking the pressure. Correct adjustment

The pressure on the sash over the entire surface of the window should be uniform. To check the pressure, use regular office paper. Close the window by placing a wide strip of paper over the seal. After this, try to pull out the paper and feel the force with which it comes out. If the paper stretches out easily in some places, it means that the pressure is weakest here and adjustments are necessary. Thus, check other pressure points around the entire perimeter of the window. Specialists check the quality of the sash pressure using a caliper and a depth gauge. But it’s easier for the average user to do this with paper.

Adjusting the pressure of the lower Maco loop

This loop is unique because it is adjustable on three sides: vertically, horizontally and for clamping. To adjust the sash pressure from below, you need to find the adjusting screw at the base of the hinge. Use TX 15 key.

Adjusting the pressure of Maco scissors

When the pressure of the scissors at the top of the sash is not tight, it may sag. You will have to adjust the screw in the scissors near the top hinge. Find it and tighten it with a hex wrench. As usual, approaching the frame ensures that the key moves clockwise.

Why is it necessary to adjust the locking pins?

Locking pins are movable oval-shaped metal heads. You can identify them by opening the sash and moving the handle a little. Adjustment of the trunnions is necessary when the window sash is not tightly pressed to the middle part of the frame.

There are summer, winter, and intermediate setting modes. The neutral position is when the trunnions are at an angle of 45 degrees. For the tightest clamping, you need to turn the spanner or pliers clockwise to a horizontal position. The house will be warm! For summer mode, a counterclockwise rotation and a vertical position of the trunnions are required.

Prevent sash sagging

Unfortunately, sagging does not only occur in the open position. The friction that occurs when closing a window from the contact of the locking pins with the strikers contributes to the fact that, over time, the sash sags.

To prevent this annoying phenomenon, Maso manufacturers have included a micro-lift blocker in the fittings, in other words, a lifter. This is a special lever that is activated by the window handle. When the window is closed, part of the load is transferred to the impost and frame.

The microlift has another important option - blocking the handle when turned incorrectly, which prevents the sash from operating incorrectly when it opens in two positions simultaneously.

Precise adjustment is necessary for the bollard to function properly. Pay attention to its lower edge - it should be 1-1.5 mm below the counterplate. Take the Torx T15 key you know and loosen the locking screw by moving the slider to the side (movement increments - 0.5 mm) - try several positions until you adjust it as needed. The millimeter scale on the lifter will make the task easier.

When and how to adjust the sash in a vertical position?

Does the bottom edge of the sash touch the frame? Vertical adjustment of MACO fittings is required. It is difficult to see deviations from the norm with the ordinary eye. Sometimes during installation the gap gap (the gap between the frame and the sash folds) is set incorrectly. If it does not correspond to the value of 12 mm, problems with fittings are guaranteed in the future.

How can you check the size of the clearance yourself?

With the window closed, use a sharp pencil to outline the edge of the sash overlap along the frame. We measure the distance from the line to the edge of the sash with a ruler. Considering that the entire overlap is 20 mm, of which 12 is occupied by the clearance, then 8 mm should remain. If you deviate from this figure, the overlap will have to be adjusted.

The shutters are adjusted vertically in the lower hinge, namely in its upper part. To get there, you need to release the loop from the cap.

We use a 4 mm hex key. To raise the sash, turn the screw clockwise, to lower it, counterclockwise. Do this as carefully as possible.

When and how to adjust the sash vertically?

Typically, the sash of Maso fittings is adjusted vertically (↑↓) only when its lower edge touches the frame . But sometimes deviations from the norm are not so visible. For example, when a careless installer did not leave the required gap of 12 mm (the gap between the folds of the sash and the frame). And if the sash is not tightened in time, expect troubles with the fittings.

Vertical adjustment stroke ±2 mm

There is an easy way to measure the clearance yourself . Take a sharp pencil and, with the window closed, mark the edge of the sash overlap along the frame. Next, measure the distance from the line to the edge of the sash with a ruler. Since the entire overlap is 20 mm, 12 of which go to the clearance, you should get 8 mm. If there is less or more overlap, it needs to be adjusted.

The vertical adjustment of the sashes is located in the lower hinge , or more precisely, in its upper part. But before you look for it, do not forget to remove the cap from the loop.

Then grab a 4mm hex wrench and off you go! If you need to raise the sash, screw the screw clockwise; if you need to lower it, turn it out. Just be less enthusiastic, you’re not starting a clunker.

Each fitting has its own adjustment features. On the website you will find information about this. For example, in the article: How to adjust Kale-Sapfir fittings yourself? How to adjust the headset of the Turkish brand GEVISS (what if this is exactly what you have?), read this article.

Or perhaps you have little-known German GU fittings? Then this is the place for you.

The handle is jammed: how to fix it?

If the handle is turned incorrectly, the lock may become stuck. If this happens while opening the window, then try to press the micro-lift lock on the side of the sash, at the same time hold it with one hand, and with the other at the same time try to turn the handle.

Press the scissor lever to release the handle lock. Did not work out? The reason may also be the jamming of the lock from slamming the sash, located on the scissors. What you need to do: feel for the lever on them with one hand and press it. Use your free hand to turn the handle at this time.

If you are unsuccessful in trying to fix everything yourself, contact the window company’s service department. Often the cause of problems can be a simple breakdown of scissors or a handle. The sash is closed but the handle is stuck? It needs to be disassembled, and this issue is already in the competence of specialists.
