How to determine the size of roller blinds for windows?

Classic cut curtains are always relevant. But they do not always suit the interior of the room or are not to everyone’s taste. In such a situation, the only correct solution is roller blinds. This type of curtain is a piece of fabric that is attached to the top of the window on a shaft. Basically, it spins from top to bottom. The main lifting mechanisms in such products are mechanical and automatic. An automatic lift is more convenient than a mechanical one, but, unfortunately, it is much more expensive.

Before you buy roller blinds, you need to correctly measure the dimensions of the window.

Roller blinds come in two main types:

The mechanism of open roller blinds is much simpler, since it does not have a shaft on top that protects the fabric. They cost an order of magnitude cheaper, but they also get dirty more often. Closed curtains have a protective roller and most often they are equipped with an automatic lifting mechanism. The cost of roller blinds depends on the quality of their components. In addition, this type of product may differ in color and type. It is very difficult to make roller blinds yourself and therefore it is better to order them, taking into account the size of your window.

They can be multi-colored or plain. The materials from which they are made are very different. In a separate group there are curtains called “Day-Night”. They consist of two strips of fabric. When closed they look like a single unit.

Criterias of choice

When it comes to replacing old windows with new ones in a house, the question involuntarily arises about decorative components, more precisely, about curtains or blinds. With the advent of plastic windows, it has become fashionable to use roller blinds in the interior. They are much more practical and modern. You need to choose roller blinds for your room based on a number of criteria:

  • is your side sunny?
  • what density of fabric is required;
  • type of fastening - on the sash, window frame, on the wall, in the slope or ceiling;
  • open or closed system;
  • choice of fabric color.

All these points must be taken into account when choosing roller blinds.

Fabric selection

Fabrics for roller blinds can be divided into four groups according to material density:

  • The first group is light translucent fabrics. They do not provide significant darkening, but play more of a decorative function. These fabrics should be used when it is necessary to achieve a slight darkening effect and use the product only as an element of window decoration. Translucent fabrics are produced mainly with patterns.

  • The second group is dense fabrics that provide significant darkness in the room. They can be either patterned or plain. They should be used in moderate sun. They have both a decorative and sun protection function.

  • The third group is very dense fabrics. The products are best used in very strong sun, for example, if you have a south-facing window or a large window. In addition to their sun protection function, they are also used as a decorative window design element. These fabrics come in patterned and plain colors.

  • The fourth group is blackout fabrics, or complete blackout. They come with a pattern and plain ones. When a roller blind made of this fabric is lowered, even in the middle of the day when the sun is shining, your room will be completely dark.

Types of fastening

We've decided on the fabrics. Now you need to figure out how the roller blind should be attached. If you already have regular curtains or tulle hanging, then the best option for attaching the roller blind is to the sash or to the window frame. If there are several sashes - two, three or more, as, for example, on a balcony, it is better to install the curtain on each sashe separately. It will be more convenient.

If you don’t have regular curtains or tulle at all, or you plan to remove them, then the option of mounting a roller blind on the wall (like a regular cornice) or mounting it to the ceiling will suit you.

Although the first option of mounting on the sash or window frame can also be considered. For example, in the kitchen, instead of regular tulle, because it constantly gets dirty, you can use a closed system of roller blinds. The shaft with the fabric is covered with an aluminum box matching the color of the window, and aluminum guides also matching the color of the window are placed along the edges. They serve to secure the fabric.

Due to the fact that a product with a closed system is attached directly to the window, it is completely removed from the main sources of pollution, such as the stove and sink. That is why the product will last a long time even without additional cleaning.

Device

The curtains include:

  1. Fabric fabric wound on a metal iron or aluminum tube with a diameter of 19, 25 or 32 millimeters.
  2. A chain control unit consisting of a roller with a gear on which 2 or 3 torsional springs are placed, a bushing with a groove for fixing the ends of the springs, a protective bushing with protrusions for fixing a metal tube in the grooves.
  3. Supporting sleeve with protrusions for fastening the second end of the tube with the blade.
  4. Two brackets for fastening the curtain to the window.
  5. Two boards for attaching brackets to the window frame using tape.
  6. Two upper brackets-clamps with a fixing mechanism for attaching the brackets to the tilt-and-turn sash of the window with tape.
  7. Two crosspieces with protrusions for fixing the chain control unit and support sleeve in the brackets.
  8. Guides in the form of a fishing line.
  9. Guides in the form of a PVC profile with an adhesive composition.
  10. Two tensioners for fishing line guides.
  11. Boards for attaching tensioners to tape.
  12. Brackets for attaching tensioners to the bottom strip of the sash.
  13. Fabric weighting material with end caps.
  14. Magnets with fastening to fabric weighting agent.
  15. Round magnets with fastening to the bottom strip of the window.
  16. Chain cord with spherical links.
  17. Screws for fastening.
  18. Scotch tape for fastening.

Models with electric drive also include a remote control unit for curtains, an electric motor and fasteners.

Measurement Rules

To select and buy suitable roller blinds, you need to measure the window correctly. To do this, you need to find out the following parameters:

  • Width. For correct measurement, indicate the width from the joint of the bead to the frame on one side, and the joint of the bead to the frame on the other side - this will be the width of the fabric. In roller blinds with an open type mechanism, the overall width of the roller blind will be 38 mm larger than the width of the fabric due to the upper side mounting fasteners. The roller blind measured in this way completely covers the double-glazed window and the window bead, which ensures maximum overlap of the opening.
  • Height. To correctly measure a fabric roller shutter, indicate the size from the joint of the bead to the frame at the bottom to the joint of the bead to the frame at the top. The size of the roller shutter mechanism is added to the height of the fabric and is about 70mm (36mm roller shutter +34mm bottom space).

It is worth paying attention to the depth of the roller blind mechanism, which is approximately 36 mm. It is necessary to take into account the distance from the edge of the roller shutter mechanism to the slope. The opening angle of the window depends on this distance.

How to measure roller blinds for plastic windows?

Roller blinds are a modern and quite attractive way to decorate a window. The products combine the simplicity and convenience of blinds, as well as the aesthetics of conventional curtains and curtains. The variety of materials produced in Holland, Belgium, Poland, Germany, Turkey makes it possible to satisfy any design whim regarding the texture, color and density of the material. However, not everyone knows how to correctly measure roller blinds for plastic windows.

How to choose the right cornice?

A correctly selected cornice will help to visually adjust the size of the room and the height of the ceilings:

  • to narrow the window, you need a guide no more than 10 cm longer than it;
  • to increase the width of the opening, take a cornice 1 m longer. This way the curtains will cover the wall without hiding the window area;
  • to visually increase the height of the ceilings, cornices with ceiling mounts are used;
  • small rooms are “expanded” with weightless curtains on light structures: string, rail or very thin round.

Types of roller blinds and rules for their selection, taking into account type, color, size

Narrated by: Alena Vinogradova

Simplicity and practicality of use, the possibility of self-installation and easy replacement of components during repairs are the undeniable advantages of roller blinds mounted on plastic or wooden windows with double-glazed windows.

Peculiarities

Roller blinds easily regulate the lighting in your home. They can completely darken a room or gently diffuse light. Main advantages of the products:

  • protection from the sun, noise and prying eyes;
  • compact design – space saving;
  • simplicity and ease of control;
  • great design possibilities;
  • durability - do not wear out over time and do not lose their aesthetic appearance;
  • do not attract dust, do not fade in the sun;
  • fabrics and mechanisms do not contain harmful substances;
  • reasonable price - depends on the size of the window, fabric and system.

Main types

The products do not require special care, but it is advisable to treat them with care. By appearance, curtains are divided into open and closed types.

Open type products

They consist of fabric and a shaft. The open shaft is usually attached to the top of the window (sash) using brackets. The types of fastening depend on the size and area of the window; brackets of larger and smaller sizes are used.

Small brackets (mini system) are usually installed on the window sash, large ones - on the frame or window opening. The fabric is wound onto the shaft. Open type roller blinds are controlled using a chain mechanism. A decorative strip is installed at the bottom of the fabric, thanks to which the fabric does not sag and is evenly wound.

To fix the product (especially when opening a window), magnetic fixation can be used. With magnetic fixation, an open-type product is fixed using magnets and metal plates (in several places). Fixation on a fishing line occurs along the entire height of the curtain, so it is more practical and effective than magnetic fixation.

Closed type products

Closed roller blinds consist of fabric and a shaft, but the shaft is placed in a plastic or aluminum box, and guide strips are placed along the edges of the fabric, which perform the function of fixing the fabric. Closed-type products are very suitable when you do not plan to use tulle and curtains - for example, when decorating a balcony or loggia. Thanks to the refinement of the aluminum frame, the effect of completing the window design is achieved.

Guides for closed-type products eliminate the possibility of light penetration between the glass and the fabric, so you can achieve complete darkness of the room. Closed-type products can have flat and U-shaped guides.

To add even more sophistication, closed-type products can be equipped with decorative chains of different colors.

Additional accessories for installation and operation of roller blinds

  1. Box This element performs decorative and protective functions. It masks the fabric wound onto the shaft, protects it from fading, dust accumulation, and exposure to moisture.
  2. Guides. Promote the correct position of the fabric and prevent it from moving during movement.
  3. Magnetic latches. They are used to hold the canvas near the frame when tilting the sash.
  4. Chain holder. This fastener allows you to secure the chain and make it less accessible to children or pets.

Window measurement

In order for roller blinds to have an aesthetic appearance and high practicality, you need to understand how to measure correctly. Roller blinds are divided into several types, and each has its own characteristics of taking measurements.

Classic version

To correctly measure curtains that will subsequently be used for plastic windows, you first need to find out exactly where the roller blinds will be mounted. They can be attached to the window frame itself or on the window opening.

What measurements need to be taken:

  1. Curtain width – “B”. Minimum width – 50 cm, maximum – 300 cm.
  2. Height – “H”. The minimum curtain height is 50 cm, the maximum is 300 cm.
  3. The length of roller blinds is marked “L”. The minimum length is 27 cm and ad infinitum.

Each type of roller blind has its own acceptable dimensions. They directly depend on the type of material from which they are made. The control length cannot be less than 2/3 of the finished product.

Fastening directly to the window opening:

  1. “H” depends on the length of the protruding parts of the window sill. If the window sill is flush, then the dimensions are at your discretion.
  2. If installation is carried out on a wall, boundaries must be respected. The distance between the roller blind and the ceiling must be at least 7 cm; it must be carefully measured.

Cassette

Uni-1 cassette roller blinds are measured as follows:

  • “B” is measured along the width of the glass unit, along the vertical of the window. The measurement is taken very accurately.
  • “H” measurements are carried out in the same way as “B”, only horizontally. Which side the control will be located on is determined individually - at the request of the customer.
  • Level “H” depends on calculations and is 2/3 of the length of the product.

Uni 2 must be measured very carefully. The location of the fittings on the plastic window is of great importance when taking measurements:

  • “B” is equal to the width of the glass unit + 6.8 cm. We must not forget that the width of the product is 2 cm less, that is, a minimum of 25 cm and a maximum of 120 cm.
  • “H” is equal to the distance between the top of the upper plug and the bottom of the lower plug of the guidance system. The minimum is 20 cm and the maximum is 150 cm.

Determining the size of roller blinds according to the Mini type:

  1. The mount is installed on the window frame. To do this, measurements are taken “B” (directly of the double-glazed window itself), then you need to add the width of the glazing bead, it is approximately 0.4 cm. The remaining dimensions are calculated in the same way. Then you should choose a convenient side to control the curtain mechanism. The approximate length of the lace is 2/3 of “H”.
  2. In the event that a metal-plastic window is opened for ventilation, fixing chips for curtains are attached to its lower part. The clamps are needed so that during ventilation the roller blinds or blinds do not sweep away everything on the windowsill.

Measurements for “Mini” curtains

Open roller blinds “Mini” are usually used as a decorative element on any type of plastic windows, giving them an attractive look. From a functional point of view, Mini roller blinds can perform both the function of shading a room from bright sunlight, and serve as an element that isolates the room from prying eyes, especially if they are installed on a door with transparent glazing.

Typically, in typical apartments, window and door sizes are standard. Therefore, in stores you can find roller blinds of standardized widths that comply with current GOST standards for windows and doors. But, if you decide to install roller blinds on the windows of a private house, in which the windows or doors differ from the accepted SNiP, you will have to either order the production of such curtains in a workshop, or in a company that installs windows and doors from PVC profiles and completing its products with various accessories.

Typically, roller blinds are installed in such a way that they completely cover the window opening - in case the window does not open or is rarely used. In this case, the size of the curtains should be 5 cm wider than the window opening on each of its sides and 1-15 cm longer than the height of the window opening.

It is not difficult to take measurements in this case. It is enough to measure the width of the plastic window along the edge of the slopes facing the room and add 10 cm to the resulting value. Depending on how you want to install roller blinds - right under the ceiling, or at some distance from it, to determine the length of the curtain you need to measure distance from the selected installation point of the cornice to the bottom edge of the window sill and add 10-15 cm to the resulting length.

Roller blinds are usually shortened and do not extend to the floor. Yes, this is not necessary. Because their purpose is similar to blinds. If necessary, block off excess light and adjust the lighting in the room.

Another option for installing roller blinds is to install them directly into the opening of a window or door sash. In this case, the cornice with a winding device is attached directly to the plastic profile. Since the profile of a plastic window or door has different widths and the bead holding the glass unit can be straight or beveled, the width of the roller blinds may vary slightly.

If the glazing bead has a right angle, then the dimensions of the roller blinds in width are measured according to the size of the glass - width and height. In this case, the roller blinds will fit tightly to the window or door glass and almost completely cover it.

If the glazing bead is beveled, the dimensions of the roller blinds in width are determined by the edges of the side glazing beads, and in length - they must correspond to the length of the side glazing bead. In this case, the roller blinds will be slightly spaced from the glass and light from the street will be visible through small gaps between the curtain and the window profile.

In order to prevent the roller blind from sagging when the window is tilted to the “ventilation” position, several magnets can be installed on the glazing bead of the window sash, at different heights in those places at which the roller blinds most often open.

How to measure a roller blind. How to measure a window correctly before purchasing roller blinds

Roller blinds gained popularity when double-glazed windows appeared. A simple design consisting of a dense material fixed to the shaft. A simple control system allows you to quickly open and close the window. Due to its high aesthetic qualities, ease of use and ease of maintenance, this version of blinds is in constant demand. To determine the dimensions, you will need a measuring meter and a pen with a notepad to record the result.

How to take measurements for wall and ceiling installation

Before purchasing such curtains, the horizontal indicator is determined and 10 cm is added to it. It is recommended to measure the length after choosing the installation variation. First, the height of the opening itself is measured. If the box is mounted above the window, then 10 cm is added to the resulting result. This is where it should be screwed. For ceiling mounting, measure the distance from the ceiling to the window sill. The standard length of similar products available in stores is 180 cm.

Placing roller blinds on the window frame

The disadvantage of screwing blinds in one of the most common ways is the lack of access to the window and restrictions on opening and closing it. There are mini-cassette blinds that are mounted directly on each section. The canvas is rolled up and stored in a box located on top of the frame of the opening element. Manufacturers offer another modification of such curtains - UNI 2. This type differs in that the guides are installed on both sides of the glass.

How to measure a roller blind when attaching it to a sash? It is important to know two values - horizontal and vertical size. The width corresponds to the distance between the glazing beads framing the glass. To determine the vertical value, the entire sash is measured.

Roller curtains installed in fragments most often have to be ordered from a specialized organization. In addition to the dimensions, it is important to decide on which side the closing mechanism should be located and choose the material.

Roman blinds are a modern solution for owners of double-glazed windows. First you need to determine the location of their placement and measure it. And also decide on accessories and fabric. If all the steps are completed correctly, then the chosen option will please you for a long time.

conclusions

Taking measurements to determine the size of roller blinds that are ideal for your plastic window is not at all difficult. The main thing is to first decide on the model and before going to the store, take and write down the dimensions of your window or door.

When taking measurements, use only a construction tape with metal tape. Do not use school rulers or tailor's measuring tape on an oilcloth base for measurements. They may not have the correct scale or may stretch during the measurement process. And it is necessary to measure windows very carefully, with an accuracy of 1 millimeter.

Measuring and selection of roller blinds

One of the advantages of roller blinds is the ability to be attached in different ways:

  1. To the ceiling or wall. The canvas can be located in front of the window opening or inside it in close proximity to the glazing. Designs with a width of 120 to 170 cm are suitable for such installation.
  2. To the frame. Locking clips allow you to secure the guides to blocks of wood or plastic. In this way, models with a width of 37-115 cm can be installed.

The installation technology is determined by the characteristics of the window opening and the requirements of the design project.

Measuring diagram for cassette roller blinds

Rules for measuring cassette roller blinds Uni 1

It is recommended to install on windows with a rectangular glazing bead at least 16 mm deep.

  • Height - along the edges of the bead +20 mm.
  • Width - along the edges of the glazing bead.

In UNI 1 systems, the fabric moves vertically between the guides and the glass. The friction of the bottom bar of the curtain against the glass leads to unclear opening and closing of the blinds. With a bead with a depth of more than 20 mm, the fabric dangles between the guide and the glass, which is also not always comfortable.

The low cost of Uni 1 determines the low consumer quality.

The cassette and guides can be installed on tape (included with the blinds).

In most cases, windows are not rectangular. Measurements must be taken both in width and height in THREE places. Specify the minimum value.

Rules for measuring cassette roller blinds Uni 2

It is allowed to install on windows with any glazing bead, except for protruding ones.

  • Width according to the external dimensions of the guides.
  • Height according to the external dimensions of the product (take into account the height of the box 70 mm). We recommend taking the height of the product with a margin of 10-20 mm, since if you make a mistake with the dimensions, then you can remove the plugs from the guides and cut them to height.

In UNI 2 systems, the fabric moves vertically along “U-shaped” guides. The guides can be installed both on the glazing bead (if it is not semicircular) and on the frame (if the installation will not be interfered with by the window opening handle).

Installation on the frame is recommended when black-out fabric is used. In this case, maximum overlap in width is achieved and gaps (gaps) at the edges of the fabric are reduced.

ATTENTION! In most cases, windows are not rectangular. Width measurements must be taken in THREE places. Specify the minimum value.

The cassette and guides can be installed on tape (included with the blinds). The tape on the box is about 30mm wide at the top. When measuring, it is necessary to take into account that at least 40 mm must be left at the top to secure the box on a flat surface so that the tape adheres correctly. Often the bead is recessed, and if you try to attach the cassette with tape to a recessed bead, the product will soon fall off.

Rules for measuring Uni 2 cassette roller blinds with springs

It is allowed to install on windows with any glazing bead, except for protruding ones.

  • Height - along the outer edges of the bead (the line where the bead meets the frame) (+) 20 mm.
  • Width - at the junction of the glazing bead with the frame (according to the external dimensions of the glazing bead) or along the edges (indicate in the form which measurement option). For details, see the section “Measuring Uni 2”;
  • The cassette and guides can be installed on tape (included with the blinds).

Dimensions of cassette curtains

Measurements of “cassette” type roller blinds are made somewhat differently. They come in two standard sizes UNI1 and UNI2, depending on whether they are intended for installation on an opening window sash or on a non-opening window. The method of attaching them to the plastic profile is also different. In the first case, the mounting brackets are L-shaped and snap onto the upper end of the window frame and are additionally fixed with double-sided foam tape. And UNI2 curtains, instead of L-shaped brackets, are equipped with flat fasteners, which are fixed to the PVC profile only with double-sided tape.

The second difference between “cassette” roller blinds and “Mini” curtains is the presence of two guides along which a weight bar attached to the end of the curtain slides, thereby preventing sagging in any position of the window or the curtains being rolled up by the wind or draft.

For windows with straight glazing beads, measurements are made in the same way as for “Mini” - according to the size of the window glass. The guides are attached to the inner surface of the side beads and the curtain fits very tightly to the glass.

If the glazing bead is beveled, then the width of the roller blinds of the “cassette” type UNI2 is determined by the outer edges of the side glazing beads, since the guides in this case are glued to the front plane of the glazing bead. The length is also determined by the outer, frontal length of the side beads.

Measuring free-hanging roller blinds

  • Width – indicate the dimensions of the PRODUCT (if necessary, install in the opening). This is the maximum width at the top of the roller blinds, fastening the fabric winding mechanism. The width of the fabric will be 2.5–4 cm smaller (depending on the dimensions of the product).
  • Width – indicate the dimensions ACCORDING to the FABRIC (if necessary, install on the opening and the window sash). Take into account the dimensions of the free opening so that the window handle or hinge does not interfere.
  • Height indicated in the form is the actual height of the product (i.e., the dimensions of the finished product along with the height of the shaft).
  • The length of the control cannot be less than 2/3 of the height of the finished product.
  • Large product sizes (more than 1.5 m in height or width) may be limited by the size of a particular fabric (each roll has its own dimensions).
  • The curtain winding mechanism (shaft) can be secured using tape (included with the blinds).
  • The bottom bar of the curtain can be fixed in the lower position using magnets that are attached to the frame at the bottom of the window. If necessary, indicate in the order.
  • It is necessary to mark on the form whether the roll is visible or not (see figure).

ATTENTION! This technique for measuring blinds is not standard. Due to the variety of window frame shapes, measurement rules may change. Responsibility for the provided dimensions when purchasing blinds (without the services of our measurers) lies with the buyer!

Measurements of roller blinds attached to walls/ceilings

If it is necessary for the curtains to be located in front of the window opening, they must be attached to the top of the wall above it.
The dimensions of the structure should be as follows: opening width + 10 cm. On each side, the fabric should overlap the wall by 5 cm to avoid the formation of sloppy gaps. When measuring the length of the curtain, you should take into account that it cannot be unrolled to the very end, as in this case it may break. Therefore, the length of the canvas must be measured with a margin - 7 cm more than the height of the opening. When installed in an opening, the width of the structure should be 4 cm less than the width of the window. It is necessary to leave a gap of 2 cm on each side so that when moving the canvas does not cling to the slopes. The length is calculated in the same way as in the previous case: the height of the opening + 7 cm for incomplete unwinding.
