Do-it-yourself roller shutter gates for the garage: the pros and cons of roller shutters for the garage, installing the structures yourself

Our company produces and installs roller shutters, which are widely used in equipping places for domestic and industrial purposes. The equipment we use allows us to create turnkey fencing of various sizes and functionality, as well as install Dorhan and Alutech automation on them. From us you can order a product based on an individual project, which will take into account your practical needs. Thus, we produce roller gates with a free-standing wicket in the same style, with a grille, from a foam-filled or anti-vandal profile.

What are roller gates and why are they needed?

Before installing outdoor roller gates, you need to understand what they are. Garage doors of this type resemble a regular roller shutter, the leaf for which is made from an AG77 profile with a thickness of 14 and a width of 77 mm. These parameters allow you to close even very large openings without reducing the strength of the structure.

Advantages of a roller shutter entry group:

  • environmental friendliness, lack of toxicity of raw materials;
  • maximum preservation of usable space;
  • minimal space occupancy of a compact design;
  • durability of operation, due to the fact that the system is made of practical aluminum slats;
  • the material easily withstands corrosion, is not afraid of moisture, negative natural factors;
  • ease of maintenance of the entry system;
  • high level of resistance to wind force, due to the presence of an end grip;
  • complete opening of the opening, which allows you to easily drive inside in any car;
  • variety of shades;
  • the ability to create space for organizing a partial view of the surrounding space;
  • creating different levels of illumination, organizing ventilation: the ability to order a system with a different number of holes, which allows daylight and air flows to pass inside. Equipping the structure with polycarbonate, transparent inserts

Design

The main part of roller shutters, which affects their aesthetics and functionality, is the canvas. Its surface is coated with a protective substance. The canvas is complemented by the following details:

  • guides with contour filler;
  • gearbox;
  • remote control system;
  • engine;
  • drum;
  • switches;
  • smart protection system against incorrect or security-threatening commands;
  • emergency unlocking system in case of power failure;
  • handle for mechanical opening.

The design may have additional technical equipment according to the developed project.

How the system works

The quality of operation of the gate depends on the correctly selected elements for it, so the components must be from the same manufacturer. An exception may be drive and automation.

Installation of roller gates:

The canvas is made from roller shutter profiles - lamellas connected to each other by longitudinal hooks.

Guides – 2 vertical bars, the width of which depends on the thickness of the canvas elements, and the length depends on the height of the opening and the installation method.

During operation of the gate, lamellas fall into the U-shaped profiles, which are held there by special fastening locks. To protect the mechanism from debris and dirt, special brushes or seals made of tubular polymer materials are installed in the grooves.

Receiving shaft - the leaf of the sash is wound onto it when opening. It is an octagonal prism driven by two ball bearings installed at the edges. Made from high-strength, sometimes galvanized, steel.

The shaft can be in one position or change it, moving closer to the opening while opening or closing the gate. The second option ensures smoother sliding of the lamellas, which immediately fall into the groove and do not experience additional loads.

Box - necessary to protect the roll from external factors, it can be square or semicircular in shape.

Drive – distinguish between mechanical (for manual opening) and automatic. They are selected with a power reserve in case of external natural influences. The exception is drives with an obstacle recognition system; they can take care of themselves, but require strict compliance with the weight of the web. Heavy roller shutters require a more powerful drive.

Drives are also divided into:

  • intra-shaft - usually built into the structure and inaccessible without its dismantling;
  • axial - remote, mounted on the wall near the box and connected to the shaft with a coupling or chain type connection.

The latter are more expensive. Recommended for heavy gates.

Locks – depending on the drive, a deadbolt (key operated) or automatic type of locking device is installed.

Roller gates have size restrictions:

  • width – from 150 to 430 cm;
  • height – from 150 to 270 cm;
  • by weight of the sash - from 4.7 to 80 kg, heavier options are practically not found.

The design has a fairly simple mechanism of action. When opened, the canvas, consisting of lamellas, is rolled into a roll, which is hidden in a special box. It can be located both inside and outside the box.

Control of the automatic system is provided in several options:

  • a button that is installed in the wall near the sash;
  • remotely - from a remote control or a special key fob, range of action - 50 m;
  • using an intelligent system whose sensors react to light, temperature or other changes.

Manual drive - opening with a key, often used as a backup in case the electricity is cut off. Although, with a budget option for small-sized structures, it can be the main one. For such cases, there is a limit on the weight of the canvas - no more than 30 kg.

Design Features

Rolling gate design

The door leaf consists of metal slats that are securely connected to each other. Typically, the metal profile of the lamella has voids inside; under production conditions, its cavity is filled with insulation, usually polyurethane foam. The lamellas are made from high-quality specially rolled aluminum profiles or from extruded profiles. Profiles are produced in different thickness and height parameters. For the manufacture of garage doors, a profile with enhanced burglary resistance and resistance to mechanical damage, with a height of 55 or 77 mm, is usually used.

Rolling gates from the inside

The roller-rolled profile with high-quality double-layer coating has excellent wear resistance. Extruded profiles have increased resistance to solar radiation and negative atmospheric influences. The width of roller-type garage doors is usually up to 5 m. If the garage opening is large, you can install roller doors without a frame. Additionally, the gates can be equipped with special viewing and ventilation profiles.

Rolling garage doors are equipped with an automated control system and a spare manual emergency lift. The automatic drive operates smoothly and silently by pressing a button on the remote control. If necessary, you can open the gate from the inside using a manual drive.

Roller gates have the following advantages in comparison with swing and sliding structures:

  • there is no need to constantly clear snow in front of rolling gates in winter;
  • roller shutters in the garage opening are easy to install, do not require special care and last a long time;
  • roller gates are compact in size, saving space in the garage and in front of it;
  • Thanks to high-quality thermal insulation, they retain heat in the room;
  • the design features of the gate guarantee reliable protection of the garage from dirt;
  • automatic control system allows you to open the gate without leaving the car;
  • This type of gate is distinguished by affordable prices and quick installation.

Features and advantages of the design

Let's look at what characteristics of these gates make them so popular:

  • More modern look than conventional gates;
  • Greater wind resistance thanks to the end grip mechanism;
  • The thinness of the design itself - since the slats are thin, they “eat up” less usable area of the room than standard gates;
  • The freedom of the opening allows the motorist to make maneuvers;
  • Environmental friendliness of products and safety for health;
  • No susceptibility to corrosion and adverse natural factors;
  • Easy to care for products - they only need to be regularly wiped from dust with a dry cloth;
  • A variety of types of products in terms of external finishing - about three dozen types of finishing are produced. Gray lamellas imitating quartz, silver, as well as colors imitating wood species are very popular;
  • Products with transparent inserts allow you to view the opposite side;
  • Possibility to purchase slats with small holes for ventilation. Through them, as well as through the inserts, a certain amount of sunlight also penetrates.

Disadvantages of roller shutter structures

When considering the issue of purchasing a roller shutter mechanism, the question inevitably arises about what possible disadvantages this type of gate may have compared to other varieties. Let's list what disadvantages they have:

  • The need to treat products with antifreeze and compounds that protect products from rain. By the way, when icing occurs, the structure functions worse;
  • The design of the lamella fabric is such that it will not be possible to install a gate in it. It is beneficial where a solid canvas is appropriate or where its presence will not strain the owner;
  • They are not very resistant to burglary by ill-wishers compared to some other types of gates. However, this parameter is variable and depends on the type of lamellas and the control of the mechanism.

Selection of roller gates: sizes, options, prices

Aluminum is most often used to make roller shutters. Firstly, the structures made from it are lightweight and at the same time reliable. Secondly, they are not afraid of corrosion and temperature changes. Moreover, experienced manufacturers apply a paint and varnish coating to the surface of the aluminum profile, which additionally protects the products from fading in the sun, abrasion and minor damage.

One of the most famous companies offering rolling gates is ALUTECH. The brand's assortment includes products in two series:

  • Prestige (gates with increased strength characteristics for particularly demanding owners),
  • Trend (economical option).

What are the types of control systems?

Features of installing roller gates with your own hands require choosing one of the types of system control. It can be manual or automated. The latter option rotates on its own, and the first – with the help of electric current. Here it is possible to equip the device with an “automatic unlocking” function. It will be needed when there is a power outage.

The structure can be controlled in the following ways:

  1. Wall switch.
  2. Remote control.
  3. Connecting intelligent system devices (light, temperature, time sensors).

Tools and materials

To install roller gates yourself, you will need certain equipment:

  • miter saw;
  • metal workbench;
  • tables for workpieces;
  • compressor;
  • machines for cutting lamellas.

You also need to prepare the tools:

  • roulette;
  • screwdriver;
  • perforator;
  • level;
  • pliers;
  • keys;
  • hammer;
  • riveter;
  • drill with drills for stone and metal;
  • glue gun;
  • metal scissors;
  • pliers;
  • wire cutters;
  • electric soldering iron;
  • indicator screwdriver;
  • multimeter;
  • ladder.

When performing construction work, you should wear safety glasses and a hard hat.

To secure the guides in concrete, dowels and anchors are needed; in metal - self-tapping screws. The gaps are hermetically sealed with acrylic or silicone. Polyurethane foam will be required to seal the seams.

Types of gates

All garage door roller shutters are characterized by the same design; the differences are in size, cost, materials from which the slats are made, method of installation and control, as well as the degree of protection.

As mentioned above, lamellas are available in steel or aluminum. Steel is characterized by high strength, reliability and long service life. In addition, the structures have soundproofing and anti-burglary characteristics, but their cost is high.

Aluminum products look presentable, the material is corrosion-resistant, lightweight, but quite durable. The structures are much cheaper than their steel counterparts.

If the device has an electric drive, operation is carried out using a key fob or control unit. Mechanical products are driven by a handle. It should be noted that if the gate weighs more than 30 kg, it is necessary to install an automatic system, because manually lifting such a structure will be very problematic.

According to the degree of protection, all roller shutter structures are divided into several types. Some of them:

  1. Products marked P1 and P2 can be classified as classic designs with a low degree of protection. Their main property is to prevent dust from getting inside, as well as slight sound insulation.
  2. Devices designated as classes P3 to P5 are average in terms of protection. They are often made from steel, which provides structural strength.
  3. Devices with indicators P6-P8 are considered the most durable. These are usually bulletproof and armored products.

Another criterion for the classification of roller blinds is the methods of fixing the structures. They come in several types:

  1. Overlays are installed on the internal or external wall of the room above the opening. The protective box is fixed there.
  2. Built-in ones are placed inside the opening at the top. Experienced craftsmen believe that this is the best option for providing reliable protection against intrusion by strangers.
  3. The combined method involves fastening the protective box in a special recess, which is located above the opening.

Gates are classified according to several bases

To size

In terms of size, roller doors installed on a garage belong to the small-sized category. Their width ranges from 3 to 8 meters. The structures for entering the site have a width of 5 meters. They are designed for the dimensions of the entering vehicle. The opening parameters are taken into account when choosing the height, as well as the thickness of the plates. If we are talking about openings with a small width, then slats with a thickness of 0.5-0.7 mm are installed. The profile height will be from 4.5 to 8 cm.

For large fence openings, lamellas from 0.7 to 1 mm thick are used. The profile height is selected in the range from 8 to 15 cm. The drums in the designs will also differ in size. The width and base material of the roller shutters affect the diameter of the shaft, which has a lower possible limit of 10 cm, and a maximum upper limit of 30 cm.

By material

The most popular materials for the manufacture of door leaves of this type are stainless steel and aluminum. Plastic is used less frequently due to its low degree of strength. Materials are selected based on the size of the opening.

  • Cink Steel. Material used for large openings. Its main advantage is strength. Steel is resistant to physical influences and, with a protective coating, is not subject to corrosion.
  • Aluminum. Lightweight material is used when equipping medium and small openings. Possesses anti-corrosion resistance. Aluminum gates come in a variety of colors and remain attractive for a long time.
  • Plastic. Inexpensive, lightweight material used for structures that do not require burglary protection. Used for small openings. Requires careful use due to fragility.

The choice of material is made taking into account the purpose of the gate and its parameters.

By profile

Rolled structures can be single-sided or double-sided. The first option is used at facilities that do not require protection against burglary. Typically, a one-sided profile is used for zoning. It may have a perforated structure to provide air exchange and improve visibility.

The double-sided option helps to ensure reliable protection of the object. It guarantees excellent heat and sound insulation. During manufacturing, the double-sided profile is filled with polyurethane foam or any foamed polymer. The design can be blank or supplemented with embedded bicarbonate glass. The second option is installed to allow viewing of the surrounding area.

Step-by-step installation of roller shutters

After preparing the opening and collecting the necessary tools, you can begin installation. Self-installation of gates with roller shutters includes the following steps:

  1. Assembling a frame consisting of guides and a box. Drill holes in the frame for attaching the canvas. The first hole with a diameter of 8 mm is made 10 cm from the edge, then every 50 cm. You also need to prepare a hole for the drive. A box with a shaft is attached to the top of the frame.
  2. Marking the installation locations for dowels. To do this, you need to attach the frame to the opening.
  3. Fastening the structure. When fixing the frame, you need to adjust their position according to the level. This will prevent distortions in the structure.
  4. Checking the horizontal and vertical planes with a level and plumb line.
  5. Assembling the web from lamellas, attaching them to the shaft. It is important to carefully secure the latches in the closed and open positions. Install crossbars and springs on the canvas.
  6. Installation of the web on the shaft with fastening of the traction elements.
  7. Installation of stoppers.
  8. Installation of lock, escutcheons, plugs, accessories.
  9. Connection of the electric drive with the control mechanism. Setting up the drive system.
  10. Sealing seams and holes to prevent corrosion.

After installation is completed, you need to check the functionality of the roller shutters. The check is carried out by opening and closing the gate up to 10 times in a row. This will make sure that the shutters are installed without distortions and that nothing interferes with their movement.

Selecting a door leaf

The lamellas are selected depending on the degree of protection required for the box. They come in two types - steel and aluminum.

Roller-rolled ones are the weakest, retain heat well and suppress external noise. They are used only inside industrial or commercial premises, as well as in warehouses.

With foam filler or rollforming - they have a relatively low weight and the same low level of protection against burglary. Suitable for boxes in protected areas.

Extruded ones are hollow inside, but have additional stiffening ribs, which means high protective characteristics. Installed in detached garages or used for entry to a site.

Extruded ventilation lamellas are equipped with slots or holes to maintain normal air exchange. Sometimes several plates, or even all, are made of polycarbonate, which provides the room with natural light and makes it possible to observe the enclosed space. Designed for unheated boxes.

Steel can also be used as a material for lamellas. Such gates are stronger, but heavier and more expensive. Aluminum lamellas, compared to steel ones, are resistant to moisture, do not form corrosion, are lightweight, less noisy and have much wider decorative capabilities.

Maximum width of the canvas at a height of 2 m:

  • made of aluminum - from 2.5 to 4 m;
  • from aluminum extruded - from 4.5 to 7 m;
  • made of steel - from 7 to 11 m.

Advantages and disadvantages

The popularity of roller shutters is explained by their versatility. The design has the following advantages:

  • protection against burglary and robbers;
  • resistance of the roller shutter material to temperature changes, mechanical damage, and corrosion;
  • presentable appearance;
  • compactness - the canvas is rolled up and does not require additional space for opening;
  • raising or lowering the lamellas is a matter of a few seconds, especially in automated mode;
  • in rain or snow there is no need to get out of the car to open or close the gate;
  • maintaining the indoor microclimate;
  • protection from street dust and noise;
  • possibility of self-installation;
  • ease of care.

The design also has disadvantages:

  • high cost;
  • freezing of lamellas in winter frosts.

You can reduce the cost of gates by installing them yourself. Possible icing of openings in cold weather can be easily eliminated with a shovel or antifreeze.

How to choose a gate

Rolling gates are selected taking into account their intended purpose. They can be installed outside, inside or in the opening. For garage buildings, you need to choose double-walled foam-filled profiles. They have reliable sound insulation properties. A varnish coating applied to their surface protects the canvas from corrosion. Such profiles reduce heat loss and are suitable for garages.

Lightweight single-wall profiles are recommended for use in industrial premises where there is no connection to temperature stability. This type of rolls is inexpensive.

When choosing a roller gate, it is important to consider how it opens. If you plan to install automation, you must choose an electronic control system. Often, due to a lack of space, opening the entrance group using an electric drive becomes the only possible solution, for example, if the vault has an arched or even more complex shape. It is especially convenient to control opening and closing remotely using a remote control.

Pros and cons of rolling gates

In order to have a complete understanding of roller shutters, you need to highlight the pros and cons of such a garage structure.

Advantages:

  1. To open a garage door, there is no need for free space on either side.
  2. They perfectly perform their direct functions in winter, when the weather is snowy outside (there is no need to clear the snow).
  3. The vehicle can perform various maneuvers.
  4. They can be equipped with an electric drive at a reasonable cost.
  5. Aesthetic appearance (roller shutters are in perfect harmony with the blinds on the windows).
  6. Easy to use.
  7. Can be placed in an arched opening.
  8. Relatively light weight.

Flaws:

  1. Not burglary resistant when compared to other structures.
  2. If the gate becomes icy in frosty weather, this will negatively affect its functionality.
  3. The gate needs protection from precipitation.
  4. It is impossible to install a wicket into gates that consist of slats.

Installation

If you have an engineering education and assembly skills, installing roller shutters in your garage is not difficult. For automation, the mandatory connection of a specialist is required.

There are three main installation methods that determine the position of the box and guides:

  • invoice - the box and guides are attached to the outside of the garage;
  • built-in - a niche for the roll is equipped in the upper part of the opening, guides along its vertical posts, of course, if the thickness of the facade wall allows;
  • combined - the cover for the canvas is located immediately behind the opening, already inside the garage, the movement slats are also installed in the room, immediately behind the entrance.

There are also more complex options, for example, when the box is located inside the box and the guides are built-in. It all depends on the required degree of protection and the financial capabilities of the customer. Overhead installation is especially simple.

In addition to standard tools for such types of work, such as a hammer or drill, you will need: a hammer drill, a gun to make rivets, and a multimeter to connect an electric drive. Finishing involves the use of sealants - silicone and acrylic, for seams - polyurethane foam.

Installation of roller shutters

The company's specialists professionally carry out a full range of work on installing protective fences in the shortest possible time. We successfully install Dorkhan roller shutters, observing all the manufacturer’s requirements, which allows us to provide guarantees for the operation of the product. Installation work includes fastening the winding shaft and box, guides for the sash, as well as the sash itself. We quickly and efficiently install products equipped with automation in various configurations.

There are several options for installing protective fences:

  • surface mounting with the box facing outwards,
  • surface mounting with the box inside,
  • built-in installation with the box facing outwards,
  • built-in installation with the box inside.

The preferred option is determined by the architecture of the building, as well as the wishes of the customer.

Installation of the structure

According to the diagram, on the surface of the wall or the upper part of the opening (for the built-in version), it is necessary to place marks for future fastenings, and drill holes in the box itself:

  • overhead installation - on the back side of the box;
  • built-in - at the top of the box.

Another hole must be made for the drive cable. At the next stage, the connection with the guides occurs. Next, you need to try on the box, check the marks and punch holes. Insert dowels into them, and a protective spring into the recess for the drive.

When installing the roller gate frame, you should carefully ensure that the notches and the corresponding holes are aligned, and that the structure itself is positioned strictly horizontally in relation to the floor level. Tighten the fasteners evenly to prevent misalignment in the future.

Control and automation, if provided, are installed strictly according to the instructions, observing all safety precautions. For these works, consultation with a professional is required.

At the last moment, the web is assembled, wound onto a shaft, and the edges are passed through the tires.

Installation ends with checking the operation of the entire structure. If everything is in order, plugs and gaps are inserted and sealed, and all technical seams are covered with polyurethane foam.

Preparation

Before installing rolling gates, measurements are taken and the method of fastening the structure is determined. Rolls can be installed at entrances with roofs or awnings. When located under the roof, they are placed above the gate. Any jumper is suitable for their installation. At the preparatory stage, openings and walls where the rolls are installed are inspected. The points for attaching the guides are marked.

Installing guides

After the marking is completed, the guides are installed at the designated points. They must be connected to the shaft holder. After fixing the guides, the blade casing is mounted.

Shaft installation

The winding shaft holder is connected to the visor using screws. The shaft is aligned along the slope and secured with bolts. Then it is connected to the canvas using screws.

Installing the drive

After placing the chain in the drive mechanism, the winding shaft is installed. The connection of the drive to the control unit is made following the introduction of the emergency braking system. After installing the mounting belts, the rolled web is lifted up through the drive until the upper closing profile is connected to the grooves.

Preparation for installation

Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare the opening and all places for future installation of structural elements. They must be freed from unnecessary communications, cleaned, leveled, plastered, etc.

The permissible height difference on the surface is no more than 5 mm. If it is difficult to achieve such accuracy, it is necessary to provide and prepare gaskets that will correct flaws during assembly. As soon as everything dries, you get the instructions and all the parts of the gate, except for the automation.

First, the locations of future holes in the wall or vertical part of the opening are marked and they are punched with a hammer drill; they are drilled into wooden structures. Then holes according to the marks plus one for the plugs are made in the guides.

Preparatory work

To install roller gates, you will need the following equipment: tape measure, drill, level, wire cutters, screwdriver, hammer drill, hammer, knife. If the garage is built from materials such as brick or gas block, you must additionally purchase a metal corner. The opening must be level.

With high-quality preparation, the installation of the gate will bring only minimal costs to the owner.

To install the gate yourself, it won’t hurt to buy reliable guides. It is also worth checking the rest of the set of parts: the box, the electric drive with the housing, the lamella panel.

Rolling garage doors, in comparison with traditional ones, do not face the road, thereby creating no obstacles for maneuver. For this reason, there is no need for free space near the wall or under the ceiling of the building. Such a design is made to personal order, after which its installation does not cause any problems.

The main component of the gate is the door leaf, which consists of small profiles secured with a hook lock. A detail is provided at the bottom to ensure that the gate adheres to the floor. Amplifiers are installed on top, thanks to which it is fixed to the shaft. The lamellas themselves are made from aluminum, using roller rolling, or produced by casting.

Drawings and calculations

Drawings are usually made at the design stage of the garage structure, when it is necessary to clearly indicate the required dimensions. The size of the gate mainly depends on what type and type of vehicle the owner plans to store in the garage. The width of the gate is designed based on the fact that it will be no less than the width of the vehicle, adding an additional 60 centimeters so that entry remains free.

Material selection

To make roller shutter gates yourself, you need to prepare the following tools and materials:

  1. Profiled sheet.
  2. Stone.
  3. Broken brick.
  4. Metal pipes.
  5. Welder.
  6. Shovel.
  7. Cement mortar.
  8. Brushes.
  9. Coating.
  • Self-tapping screws.
  • Loops.
  • Bulgarian.

List of required tools

Tools that will come in handy:

  1. Riveter.
  2. Wire cutters.
  3. Hammer.
  4. Screwdriver.
  5. Level.
  6. Marker.
  7. Knife.
  8. Keys.
  9. Drill.
  • Hammer.
  • Roulette.

Gates are different

To avoid unpleasant surprises during the operation of garage doors, it is best to study the distinctive features of different types of structures before purchasing.

Swing gates.

They consist of 2 sashes that are attached to hinges on the sides of the opening. The simplicity of the design makes such gates affordable. However, it should be remembered that opening swing gates requires free space in front of the garage, and in winter you will have to clear a fairly large area in front of them from snow.

Up and over gates.

When opening or closing, the blade moves along guides. Along the vertical axis, movement runs parallel to the walls, along the horizontal axis, parallel to the ceiling, so having free space in front of the garage is no longer necessary. Lift-and-turn structures have two drawbacks: they are often not tightly adjacent to the opening, which is why they do not retain heat well. In addition, there is a need to regularly balance the springs.

Sectional doors.

They are considered the most “warm” and convenient to use. A web of sandwich panels filled with polyurethane foam to increase thermal insulation moves along guides under the ceiling. So the space in front of and inside the garage remains free.

Rolling gates.

The design of roller shutters is simple: they are practically no different from conventional window-door roller shutters (except for the size and, as a consequence, the type and width of the profiles used). Such gates are burglar-resistant, they are simple and easy to use, and protect well from bad weather: the thermal characteristics of the product are comparable to 15-centimeter brickwork or a 7-centimeter layer of oak. However, this is not all of their advantages. We propose to consider the designs in more detail.

Installation work

After the owner has fully studied the installation instructions for roller shutter gates, he will install them with his own hands without much difficulty. Before starting work, it is necessary to check the readiness of the portal for installation of the structure (how and why to do this was described earlier). When planning to connect an electric drive, it is worth thinking about the wiring.

In order to ultimately obtain a complete product, it is worth checking the components of the future product, and then proceed directly to assembly and installation.

Fastening the guides

To install roller shutter fastenings you need:

  1. Mark where the holes will be.
  2. Drill the walls for fasteners.
  3. Use a drill to make holes for the plugs.

Possible malfunctions and their repair

The troubles that can happen with roller shutters are quite common. They can be divided into the following groups:

  • Electric motor failure . A simple user can check whether the plugs are knocked out, whether the wire is in order and whether gray smoke is coming from the engine. If the plugs are knocked out, they need to be inserted; if the wire is not in order, it needs to be replaced or put in order. If the electric motor is noisy, suddenly turns off, sparks or smokes, there is a breakdown inside and you need to call a technician.
  • Web blocking . A lot of unpleasant things can happen to the canvas. If it is icy, the ice should be melted or knocked down. If it is stuck due to something caught in the slats, it is worth removing the obstacle. If they tried to break it, or for some reason it rises or falls sharply, jams or does not want to open, you should also call a specialist and do not try to fix the breakdown yourself. It can only get worse.
  • Damage to the box . The problem may be in the guides, and if the gate jams, creaks, or does not want to close, it is worth checking whether everything is in order with them.

Apart from very simple problems, such as icing or a broken wire, a non-professional, as a rule, cannot fix anything on his own. Therefore, it is better not to jeopardize all the gates because of one small breakdown and contact a specialist in time.

Stages of setting up and adjusting the gate

To adjust the limit switches, you need to use a hexagon (plastic or metal), which is usually included with the finished gate. It is worth finding out the maximum and minimum position of the canvas (lower and upper). The lower is set thanks to the lower limit switch, the upper – thanks to the upper. The switches are located on the side of the box.

The upper position of the blade is adjusted so that one of the lamellas is in the opening of the guides, then electrical connections are made. Then we proceed to installing the front part of the box, securing it with rivets or self-tapping screws. The quality of the fastenings is carefully checked here.

Open and close the gate several times in a row to adjust how the track moves. After such a check, the installation is considered complete. All that remains is to remove the film from the lamellas and remove the dust.

Installing a doorway in a roller shutter

First of all, the garage owner must decide how to carry out the installation - overhead or built-in.

The fact is that the decision will affect what preparatory work is needed to mount the hole in the gate. In addition, it is worth taking into account the installation features that relate to the passage for the gate.

At this stage, the following requirements must be met:

  1. The surrounding foundation should be as level as possible. There should be no cracks or protrusions.
  2. The level of the mounting surface should be controlled, allowing a maximum error of 5 millimeters.
  3. There must be a free area for the gate. If there are pipelines or other communications, they are removed if possible.

Application areas for rolling shutters

Due to their low weight and affordable cost, roller shutters can be installed in a variety of places, including where there are restrictions on the weight of the protective fences. The most common uses for products of this type are private garages, door and window openings of buildings, internal passages in domestic and industrial premises, warehouses, office buildings, and retail pavilions. Such a wide range of applications is due to the attractive appearance and performance characteristics of the fences, which pose a serious obstacle to burglars due to the unsurpassed strength of the materials used. If the product is used in an administrative building, then the function of raising the fence allows you to hide the sash from prying eyes, and its use at night will not affect the appearance of the structure.

Lock for roller gates

During assembly, automatic locks - crossbars - are attached to the last end element of the roller shutter. They are needed for a tighter connection to the floor. Side plugs and a locking cylinder allow the box to be left unattended for long periods of time. Without installing automation, a lock on a roller shutter gate is required, because the door leaf, although not by much, can be raised by a few centimeters.

The time and money spent on designing and installing roller shutters will ensure their uninterrupted operation and comfort of use. New times require new forms that correspond to the spirit of the times, and roller shutters respond to the challenges of the new millennium.

How to adjust roller shutters?

Setting up roller shutters with manual drive

Adjusting mechanical roller shutters is a fairly simple task that anyone can do. It consists of several stages. You need:

  • Screw the spring onto the drive shaft (a few turns will be enough);
  • Securely fix the spring on the shaft;
  • Close the roller shutter (they should screw onto the shaft), and then open it again.

If the winding of the web occurred without any problems, then the adjustment can be considered successful. If sagging or uneven lifting of the gate is noticeable, try tightening the spring a few more turns until the problem disappears. The entire adjustment process consists of tightening the spring to the desired level and checking that the web is wound correctly.

Please note: if the sagging and/or uneven winding does not disappear after adjusting the roller shutter, this may indicate a structural failure. We recommend that you immediately contact a specialist: a specialist will diagnose the roller shutter, identify and eliminate the malfunction. By continuing to use a faulty gate, you can completely disable it.

How to adjust the electric roller shutter drive?

The most important stage in adjusting the automation is the correct setting of the limit switches. It is these elements that give a signal to the drive to stop the web at a certain height. If the adjustment is carried out incorrectly, various kinds of problems are possible: for example, bending of the canvas at the bottom, its uneven winding on the shaft.

Attention: before setting up the electric drive, be sure to read the instructions!

So, let's go directly to the adjustment:

  • Locate the adjusting screw on the electric drive;
  • To set the top position, turn on the automatic lift. If the drive turns off before the web is completely wound onto the shaft, rotate the screw in the “positive” direction until it is completely on the shaft. The fabric is already wound, but the drive is still working? This means that you need to lower the canvas down and repeat the procedure again according to the same scheme;
  • Setting the lower position follows a similar principle. But the adjusting screw must be rotated in the “-” direction until the blade reaches the bottom edge of the opening.

Remember that all procedures must be carried out with the utmost care, as well as following the recommendations of the automation manufacturer.

Adjusting automatic gates is a task that is much more profitable and easier to entrust to a specialist. We recommend doing just that. This will be the key to an excellent result.

How to choose them?

Choosing a gate is a responsible matter that requires an integrated approach. They must serve for a long time, so you cannot spend just half an hour choosing and decide that this is enough. You need to act sequentially:

  • Select manufacturer . There are three options to which the choice comes down: Foreign manufacturers. These include companies such as the German Hormann, Normstahl, Novoferm, the Italian Bremet, the American Clopay and the Finnish Meswas. Their products are delivered to Russia fully equipped and ready for sale, which means true European quality.
  • Domestic manufacturers using foreign components. These include, for example, Alutech. Due to local assembly, these products are cheaper, but may not fully meet international standards.
  • Domestic manufacturers producing gates themselves. These include Tehnoprof, Erin, Doorhan, which also boast a large number of satisfied customers.
  • Read reviews of the manufacturer and find out how other buyers’ relationships with them ended.
  • Select a specific gate, guided by:
      The extent to which they suit a particular garage in size and design.
  • The quality of them is evidenced by an adequate price, the absence of mechanical damage, the warranty provided by the manufacturer and the absence of damage to the parts connecting the lamellas.
  • How they fit into the budget.
  • Whether they are automatic or manual, and how convenient it will be for the user to interact with them.
  • You should not buy gates that are too cheap, as the stingy one pays twice and they can break down very quickly. It is better to take a quality item that will last for many years.
