Cold glazing
Standard cold glazing for balconies and loggias is an aluminum profile. Unlike the warm and semi-warm options, where double-glazed windows (double glass) are used, here, as a rule, single glass is installed.
Advantages of cold balcony glazing:
- Price. The price of glazing will be much cheaper than in the case of PVC products.
- Light weight. Lightweight aluminum profile and single glass will not add significant load to the parapet and base plate. The danger of the loggia collapsing is eliminated (relevant for old houses), there is no need to obtain permission for redevelopment (the living space does not increase, there is no reason to formalize your actions).
- Easy installation. In most cases, it is not necessary to specifically strengthen the parapet to install aluminum frames.
Finishing and insulation of the space is done at will. The aluminum profile does not retain heat; the use of insulation does not play a significant role.
- Protection from dust, wind, rain, snow all year round.
- Ease of use. Sliding systems allow you to save space when opening the doors. Washing glass is also not particularly difficult.
Disadvantages of aluminum structures in glazing:
- The temperature on the loggia in cold weather will differ little from the temperature outside. If low temperatures often occur in your region in winter, using the loggia will be uncomfortable.
- In winter, when the doors are opened, the glass fogged up from high humidity quickly freezes. In St. Petersburg, due to high humidity in the cold season, this phenomenon is not uncommon. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to wipe the glass from moisture before opening the sashes.
Otherwise, cold glazing is a cheaper option compared to warm glazing. There is a difference in functionality, so you need to weigh the pros and cons before choosing.
How to reduce costs
Find out from your upstairs neighbors whether they have insulated the floors on their loggia. If yes, then only finishing work can be done on the ceiling. And this is a significant saving.
If the room has a cabinet or shelves, then it is better to replace the side glass unit with a sandwich panel; it will cost much less.
Insulation work is expensive, but the costs will be recouped during the operation of the premises.
This technology is preferred when glazing open spaces. This creates a comfortable, constant temperature at any time of the year.
Warm glazing
Warm glazing prevents heat loss and allows you to organize a separate office or corner on the loggia for complete relaxation. Glazing for balcony areas is made in the same way as windows for apartments: from a multi-chamber profile with double-glazed windows. The level of energy efficiency of the structure can be increased if desired.
Advantages of PVC profiles when glazing a loggia:
- Equally comfortable microclimate in winter and summer.
- Stylish and presentable appearance, appropriate on the facade of any home.
- Micro-ventilation system, adjusting fittings for different seasons to optimize the cost of heating the area.
- You can implement any option for opening the doors: swing, tilt, turn-tilt, sliding.
- Any design option, the ability to paint the profile in any RAL color.
There are features that are associated with the production technology of PVC products and may influence the decision to glaze a balcony:
- Significant weight of PVC blocks. This factor should be taken into account when drawing up a glazing project. If the balcony area is planned to be added to the apartment, you will have to obtain permission from the BTI. An increase in living space is considered a redevelopment, so the consent of engineering supervision is necessary.
- The cost is higher than for aluminum profile products.
- Installation often requires preliminary preparation of the balcony. It is necessary to carry out interior finishing, strengthen the parapet (weld reinforcing metal structures). These works are auxiliary and are not included in the cost of the basic glazing kit. The estimate for them should be taken into account when planning the budget for glazing.
The costs of warm window systems are justified: you get durable and practical glazing that will last longer than an aluminum profile.
Double-glazed windows
For warm windows, double-chamber energy-saving and multifunctional double-glazed windows are used. Three-chamber ones with ordinary glass are not used for safety reasons. The excessive weight load they create can cause the collapse of the balcony structure.
They are equipped with glass with energy-saving coating or thermal film.
The peculiarity of multifunctional packages is their ability to reflect heat not only inside the room, but also outside. If the warm loggia faces the sunny side, this is an indispensable quality in the summer.
This way you can save not only on heating, but also on air conditioning the room.
Which glazing option to choose
Cold glazing is a budget solution when you want to clean up your loggia and have no plans to use it all year round. In what cases should you choose to install warm glazing:
- Are you planning to use the balcony in winter?
- Do you want to remove the partition between the balcony and living rooms to increase the area of the apartment.
- You are going to equip an area with a comfortable microclimate and amenities.
There is an intermediate option between warm and cold glazing - metal-plastic sliding frames. They are cheaper than full-fledged PVC window blocks made from a 5-chamber profile. In cold weather, the temperature on the glazed loggia and in the house differs by an average of 10-15 degrees. If this is a normal indicator for you, you can opt for semi-warm glazing. Heat savings can be increased through insulation and high-quality interior finishing.
What to consider when ordering
Before you make a final decision, you need to decide on the details.
The first thing is to study the technical condition of the balcony. The specialist will tell you whether additional work is needed to strengthen the base slab and whether the structure can support the weight of the window blocks.
The choice of installation company should be taken with responsibility. View offers in the city and study reviews of completed work. Ask friends who glazed their loggia a couple or three years ago about the quality of the structures. It is much better when the company does the full scope of work on a turnkey basis and guarantees high-quality insulation of the room.
The type of glazing depends on the customer’s personal preferences and financial capabilities.

Installation of windows on the balcony
Most often, plastic windows are chosen for installation on a balcony or loggia because they have excellent characteristics and an affordable price. Before glazing, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work - check the reliability of the concrete base and balcony railing, adjust the thickness of the external walls in accordance with the goals of landscaping (this may require the construction of brick or foam blocks).
After this work, measurements of the opening for the manufacture of windows are taken. After delivery, they check their compliance, the presence of all parts, the absence of scratches and damage:
- Before installing the window, it is necessary to disassemble it - remove the sashes from the hinges, remove the double-glazed windows, remove the glazing beads, and remove the protective film.
- Anchor plates are attached along the perimeter of the frame.
- Install the frame in the opening of the balcony or loggia and align its position horizontally and vertically.
- Fix the anchor plates and fill all the cracks around the perimeter with foam.
- Double-glazed windows are inserted into the installed frame and the sashes are hung.
- After completing the glazing, they begin to insulate and decorate the balcony.
Warm glazing allows you to create an additional room on the balcony or loggia for relaxing, working or storing things. At the same time, in winter, the air in the adjacent room will warm up faster, which will save on heating costs. Modern windows made of different materials can be used - plastic, aluminum or euro-timber; a double-glazed window with heat-saving film will increase the efficiency of glazing.
