Double-frame wooden Twin windows (Finnish windows)

Double-frame (Finnish) windows

It has been established that in cold weather, almost half of the heat from living quarters escapes through windows. This provides a serious reason for a more careful selection of window systems during construction or renovation. Such designs provide a high level of heat and noise insulation, and are also easy to operate.

Advantages of wooden windows

Environmentally friendly wood is much more beneficial for human health than any plastic. Therefore, we offer to buy wooden windows with double glazing, which can not only retain heat in your home, but also decorate its interior. A special feature of the double window design is the presence of two frames connected through wooden slopes. The internal sash includes a single- or double-glazed unit, the external one can be either double-glazed or single-glazed. The advantages of double wooden windows include:

  • maintaining an optimal indoor microclimate;
  • increased sound and heat insulation;
  • strength and reliability of the structure;
  • durability;
  • ease of use;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • stylish and attractive design.

Characteristics of Finnish windows

Scandinavian windows have the highest rates of heat and noise insulation , not least due to their unique design. As a rule, they are made of high-strength wood that will withstand any weather troubles. Another undeniable advantage of Finnish wooden windows over plastic and other types of windows is that they “breathe”. This is possible not only due to the natural structure of the wood material, but also due to the existence of a specially designed gap in the street seal or ventilation valve that cuts into the top of the windows. Such a valve allows fresh air to enter the room without drafts, both in summer and winter.

The production of Finnish windows is carried out, most often, from coniferous wood. Usually it is spruce, pine or larch. The first is good because it has a low cost with excellent thermal insulation performance. It can also be painted in any color, which is a definite advantage when creating a variety of design options for both interior and exterior. Larch has greater wood hardness compared to pine, and in this indicator it is on the same level as oak. However, in strength it surpasses both types of wood, surpassing them in fire resistance, resistance to rotting and other characteristics. But the price of larch windows will be slightly higher.

Description and key differences

The closest and most familiar analogue of Finnish windows to domestic consumers is wooden window and balcony blocks manufactured in accordance with GOST 11214–86. The quality and reliability of these products varied greatly depending on the place of production, but some samples still serve well to this day.

Unlike Soviet wooden windows, Finnish ones are not designed for periodic adjustment of technological gaps during operation. The internal sashes and frame are made of multi-layer laminated timber, which undergoes bioprotective and water-repellent impregnation, becoming resistant to shrinkage due to fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

The outer sash is made of aluminum; the frame also has a protective aluminum screen that protects the wood from precipitation and frost. Thanks to this, the maintenance of technological gaps is guaranteed throughout the entire service life.

Finnish wooden double-frame windows with glass or double-glazed windows are the warmest and most noise-efficient windows.

The high quality of the material allowed us to make wooden frames more durable, with an average service life of 40-50 years.

Our production is equipped with modern equipment, which allows us to make windows made of laminated veneer lumber more affordable compared to imported analogues.

Manufacturing technology of Finnish double windows

Finnish wooden windows have production features. They are always made from laminated veneer lumber. The most common material is pine. In individual orders, oak and larch are used.

Gluing the timber allows you to eliminate the vagaries that are inherent in solid wood - twisting, cracking, wood dragging.

Installation of double windows

Installation of this type of windows has its own peculiarities. Finnish windows are heavy and require special care and precision during installation. Successful installation is facilitated by the exact size of the window opening parameters. Self-installation may increase the cost of repairs.

We suggest using the services of our specialists. Measurers will be able to take into account all your wishes and individual features of your home. Our teams of professionals install windows quickly and efficiently - this is our specialization. By contacting the manufacturer of Finnish wooden windows directly, you will not only save on products, but also get a team of professionals with extensive experience.

The plant produces wooden windows, cheap economical frames and windows with high technological and aesthetic qualities.

Technical characteristics of Finnish windows

Finnish wooden windows have some design features. Mandatory features unique to them:

  1. presence of two frames;
  2. glazing option for each frame individually. Sometimes the outer frame is made with one glass, and the inner one with double-glazed windows. It is possible to make a window with two double-glazed windows;
  3. rotary ventilation mechanism;
  4. made from glued timber and solid wood.

The distance between the frames of Finnish windows allows you to place blinds between them and carry out ventilation using valves. Precise joining of parts and multi-stage processing of wooden surfaces using grinding equipment allows you to obtain perfectly smooth and pleasant-to-touch surfaces.

Advantages of Scandinavian windows

As you can guess from the name, these products came to our market from the Scandinavian Peninsula, where they became the most popular due to their advantages. Let's look at them:

  • optimal thermal insulation performance, which helps save on heating in frosty winters and cooling in summer;
  • wooden doors together with an air valve ensure optimal air circulation in the room without drafts, dust or the spread of humidity. This means you can save on air conditioning;
  • windows are 4-6 dB better at absorbing noise compared to plastic windows of a German design (these are ordinary plastic);
  • special design and high-quality wood allow them to serve for a very long time, and if an aluminum outer sash is used, then even longer;
  • Depending on the type of wood and the method of its processing, the design of the structure can be of any shape and shade.

These are the main advantages of Finnish windows, to which you also need to add an unusual but pleasant design and environmental friendliness. The latter is worth mentioning separately, since the sun and temperature changes can have the worst effect on low-quality or old plastic, causing it to deteriorate and evaporate harmful (toxic) substances into the air. The same cannot be said about metal or wood.

Disadvantages of Scandinavian designs

Among the disadvantages of Finnish technologies, only two things can be noted:

  1. Price. Yes, they are more expensive than ordinary plastic windows, but they have better heat and sound insulation and last longer;
  2. The complexity of the design, which can lead to more frequent breakdowns and rapid wear. This drawback is inherent only in low-quality materials and/or unprofessional assembly - use the services of specialists to avoid this.

It should also be noted that previously another “disadvantage” was attributed to Finnish windows - an unusual design, and especially the absence of the folding sash design that is familiar to many. Which is not always a disadvantage. But since many did not like this, Russian manufacturers met their customers halfway and now, if the client wishes, the inner sash is equipped with the ability to open slightly by “tilting.”

Design features and installation

When making Scandinavian wooden windows, the design features of the brand must be taken into account. Products are made entirely from wood or wood and aluminum. The frames are equipped with several layers of glazing. The design includes a frame profile (width from 160 to 205 mm), internal glass unit, external glass, silicone sealant or rubber seal. The outer side of the front frame is equipped with a drainage and side aluminum profile.

The structures are equipped with windows, a transom or a ventilation valve to ventilate the room. The vents are equipped with opening limiters that help hold the sash in the open position. A layer of air is formed between the sealed layers, which serves as a heat and sound insulator.

The design of Finnish double-glazed windows allows for the possibility of creating a frame to suit any width. The technology allows you to reduce the load on load-bearing fasteners when opening and closing.

The Scandinavian design has a rigid frame structure, which leads to less wear on the seals and eliminates misalignment of the sashes.

When repairing a product, you can replace the fittings.

Reflects the design features of brands and prices, because quality products cost more than standard frames.

Installation of a Finnish window begins with the installation of a window sill. Experts recommend using a cement pad as a base, which is secured with dowels. Then holes are drilled in the window sill to attach the frames.

When installing windows on a brick base, it is necessary to install support and spacer blocks. To do this, holes are drilled, the elements are fastened, and the initial installation of the frame is performed. After leveling the frame, the pads are removed. Silicone is applied at the recesses and over the entire area of the frame. The pads are returned to the bonding mixture. After hardening, the cracks are filled with construction foam; The excess composition is cleaned off with a knife. The work is completed by installing the window sashes and adjusting the rotating mechanisms.

Characteristics of standard double-frame windows

  • The Scandinavian window frame is made of wide three-layer laminated timber with a thickness of 132-172 mm. The window block sashes are made of two-layer laminated veneer lumber 46 mm thick. In this case, pine or larch material is used, the humidity of which is 11-14%.
  • Painting is carried out with PU products according to the following scheme: impregnation, priming, painting.
  • For Finnish windows, “Scalen” fittings are used.
  • From the inside of the room, the product has a single-chamber double-glazed window with a thickness of 20-22 mm.
  • The thickness of the glass on the outside is 4-6 mm.
  • Both sides at the junction of the wood and the glass unit are treated with silicone translucent sealant.
  • To ensure maximum sound and heat insulation, 2 or 3 perimeter silicone seals are installed on the window.

  • The internal joints of the corner joint and the ends of the glazing bead are treated with a water-repellent compound.
  • The glass unit is installed on special plastic gaskets.

Finnish wooden windows Tiivi

The company produces wooden and wood-aluminum windows. She began her work in 1977. Every year all Finnish windows are tested for thermal insulation and sound insulation properties. They get high marks. Tiwi's window frames are made from high quality northern pine. It is painted with water-soluble paints from Teknos; they are environmentally friendly and durable.

The note! Tiivi is installed in residential premises, hotels, museums and industrial buildings. It doesn’t matter what climate zone they are in.

The company produces Finnish products of 5 types:

Tiivi optimi

The most affordable model range from the manufacturer. Today it is produced in two variations: 1+2 and 2+2. The budget cost is due to the fact that the windows have a more simplified profile, and they also have a minimum number of sashes with an opening mechanism. Tiivi optimi is a rotating two-frame structure installed in a wooden box. The outer frame is made of aluminum, has glass 4 mm thick, if it is a 1+2 line (number of glasses). In the 2+2 option, a double-glazed window consists of two 4 mm glasses, with a distance of 16 mm between them. The inner frame is made of wood. It has a single-chamber double-glazed window consisting of two glasses (4 mm), between which the distance is 16 mm. Abloy swivel fittings are used. Has energy saving class “A”, and resistance coefficient U=1.0 W/m2K. Box width 130 mm. Sound insulation 33 dB.

Tiivi 1+2

The design has a slight difference from the Tiivi optimi. It consists of a more diverse range of colors, as well as additional equipment. As for the technical characteristics, they are almost the same as those of the analogue. Finnish windows with micro-ventilation valve, mosquito net and inter-frame blinds are on sale. The width of the box can be from 130 to 205 mm.

Tiivi 1+3

The design is similar to the first two. There are two frames, a rotating mechanism. Wooden box. The difference is the number of double-glazed windows. They have not one, but two air chambers. They are filled with argon. There are 3 pieces of glass in the chamber, thickness 4 mm. The distance between them is 14 mm. Energy saving class “A”, if required by the customer, is improved by using a different type of double-glazed window and increasing the depth of the wooden frame. The heat saving coefficient is 1.18 W/m2K. Sound insulation parameters – 35 dB. If you increase the size of the box, then the parameter 44 dB is achieved. Ideal for an apartment with a noisy street.

Tiivi 2+2

It has two single-chamber double-glazed windows, the space between which is filled with argon. The distance between the glasses (thickness 4 mm) in the internal double glazed unit is 16 mm, and in the external one – 12 mm. Frame depth – 170–205 mm. The remaining parameters (heat transfer coefficient and energy saving class) are the same as the previous option.

Tiivi blind window

This is a single-frame structure consisting of: a wooden frame and double-glazed windows. The thickness of the glasses is 4 mm, the distance between them is 18 mm. Box width from 130 to 205 mm. U=1 W/m²×°K. The color of the Finnish window can be any. The standard colors are grey, white and dark brown.

Profin

The company has been producing windows and doors for 35 years. They are sliding or regular. The quality is top notch. Products can be divided into 4 series:

  • North;
  • Active;
  • Clear;
  • Core.

These are premium Finnish designs. It is enough that all the Finnish houses that are imported to Japan are equipped with windows from this company, and several more objects in the Kremlin and the Tretyakov Gallery also have these Finnish windows. The windows have a 5-year warranty, and the components have a 10-year warranty.

Features of a double-frame plastic window

A double-frame window has two sashes: an outer aluminum one with one, usually glass, and an inner wooden one with a double-glazed window. The outer frame takes on the load and protects from negative weather factors, while the inner frame is warm. Usually made from ordinary wood, equipped with standard swivel hinges.

  • A Finnish window is often equipped with blinds, which are placed between the sashes and controlled by a rotary and removable handle on the inner frame.
  • In addition to blinds, ventilation valves can be installed at the top of such a window to allow air flow into the room. Their presence in a Scandinavian window is important, because it is implemented only in a turning version, and fittings for a tilting mechanism do not exist in a Finnish window. To ventilate the room, it is more convenient to use the ventilation valve rather than opening the window and turning it to one side or another.
  • There is a hypoallergenic filter inside the ventilation valve, and two latches on the outside that regulate the air flow into the room.

Making a Finnish window with your own hands

When making a Finnish window, the most important thing is precision in work. Any inconsistencies are a risk of damaging the thermal insulation, and this is the main advantage of Finnish windows. If you have carpentry skills, desire and perseverance, you will be able to make Finnish windows to install them in old Khrushchev buildings, where the windows have long been obsolete, or in the country, in your new home, etc.

Where to start for a modern master? From choosing a profile. You can choose the classic version, in which one glass is inserted into the outer frame, and the inner frame is equipped with a triple-glazed unit.

Next you need to choose wood. Oak is too expensive an option for most, pine is inexpensive and easy to work with even for a beginner, birch is harder to find, but it is inexpensive, works well and lasts a long time. The wood must be free of cracks.

After selecting the material, a drawing is drawn up and the necessary materials and tools are collected.

  • Beam.
  • Boards.
  • Glass.
  • Glazing beads.
  • Self-tapping screws.
  • PVA glue.
  • Hammer.
  • Drill.
  • Saw.
  • Milling machine.

First, the box is formed, then the frame is made, then the glazing is performed.

Making a box:

  • We take a board with a section of 15x5 and make an L-shaped groove 1.5 cm deep in it. We make four boards in this way and connect them together.
  • Use a drill to make holes 3 cm deep in the corners.
  • We hammer wooden pins into the holes.

We make the frame according to the drawing:

  • We prepare the side and intermediate strips for inserting glass; to do this, we remove the wood by a quarter.
  • At the end of the beams we make grooves using the tongue-and-groove technique using an end mill or a regular chisel.
  • We fill these places with PVA glue, fasten and press.
  • We place the sashes in one part of the frame. To do this, we make samples in the bars. The sashes are made in the same way as the frames.
  • The sash must be installed tightly.
  • Make markings to place the hinge fastenings.
  • We drill holes in the designated areas and fix the hinges.
  • Installing handles. We mill a groove under them in the sash rail and install the mechanism. In the counter part we prepare a recess for the tongue to fit into.

Installing glass:

  • We cut it precisely to a tolerance of no more than 0.5 mm using a diamond self-tapping screw. A deviation of about 1 mm or more is unacceptable - we will get a cold bridge and the window will not perform its functions.
  • Polish with sandpaper.

We install the assembled window into the opening, having first removed all debris from it.

After this, we make holes for the dowels in increments of 80 mm. After installation, it is fixed using self-tapping screws. The cracks must be sealed with foam. During installation, you need to constantly check the geometry of the window.

Continental PVC windows

Following the trends of the specialized market, the Finns are developing their usual window technologies and now offer so-called “Continental” windows - a hybrid of the German plastic window familiar to Russians and a typical Finnish one. The difference between this window is that it is equipped with an aluminum frame on the outside, and a wooden frame on the inside. If for a standard plastic window the outer aluminum frame is optional and recommended by the manufacturer for additional protection of a wooden window, then for a Finnish window it is an integral part of the window structure. The Scandinavian window of the “continental” type is equipped with tilt-and-turn fittings, which are familiar to Russian consumers. In such a window, aluminum blinds can be placed between the double-glazed window and the glass of the frame. To install them, the outer window frame can be unfastened.

How to buy Finnish windows profitably?

In the nineties of the last century, after the fall of the Iron Curtain, a flood of Finnish windows poured into the Russian market, especially the window market of St. Petersburg. Having virtually no alternative, they immediately took leading positions in the city and region, due to the proximity of the country of origin. Many years have passed since then, but the flywheel promoted by marketers still does not stop and Finnish windows are still popular today. The price of Finnish windows depends on many factors and it is best to get a calculation and consultation by contacting us at the Baltic Window Company by phone or email.

Fittings for Finnish windows and doors

Particular attention should be paid to the fittings, because they are what powers the design of doors or windows made using Finnish technology. The fittings for such windows are rotatable. The tilting system used in German windows is not needed here. Its main purpose is to ventilate the room. In Finnish windows, such a mechanism is superfluous, since a window (if provided) or a transom is responsible for ventilation. Another option is a supply valve.

Thanks to the fittings that connect the sashes to each other, they can open synchronously or simultaneously. The photo shows what she looks like.

The fittings include screw hinges and screw handles. For Finnish windows, the fittings chosen are simple and affordable. Manufacturers are different. The main condition is silicone or rubber seals, thanks to which air will not leak between the windows.

What are their advantages:

Beautiful

Wood is a universal material that can decorate any interior design.

Economical

Installing energy-saving wooden windows with double glazing in an apartment reduces heat loss and helps reduce utility bills - usually a few months are enough for the updated windows to fully pay off their price.

Comfortable

Natural wood creates a pleasant microclimate in living spaces - it retains not only heat, but also oxygen and humidity levels well. In apartments with wooden window frames it is easy to breathe and there is no need for constant ventilation. There is no blowing from the windows, and the appearance of condensation on the glass, dampness or mold is completely excluded.

Light

Thanks to their special design, such windows do not prevent sunlight from entering the apartment.

No harm to health

Wood can be safely used to decorate window openings in residential premises, including children's premises.

Well-established production processes, modern technologies and materials make it possible to produce high-quality wooden windows with reliable double-glazed windows for both standard small-sized and luxury large-area apartments with window openings of non-standard sizes and shapes.
