What is jumbo glass and its scope of application

Jumbo glass differs from standard format panels, which are used in traditional glazing of facades, not only in its larger size, but also in its properties. For the production of such products, large-sized thick glasses are used, which have improved optical characteristics and high strength. Jumbo panels are additionally polished and provide good thermal insulation of the building.

Advantages and disadvantages

Large format jumbo glass is energy efficient. It has a luxurious glossy surface, sound insulation due to the increased glass thickness. It is characterized by a polished, easy-to-clean structure and 95% light transmittance.

Disadvantages include weight, cost, and complicated installation. Installation requires specialists. We need heavy-duty fasteners and profiles. Special machines are required to transport and replace glass.

Advantages and disadvantages

Energy efficiency and a luxurious appearance of objects with a glossy facade plane are the main, but not the only advantages of jumbo glass. Important advantages of these products also include:

  • excellent sound insulation – thick glass absorbs noise much better;
  • light transmittance up to 95%;
  • ease of maintenance - a polished surface becomes dirty more slowly and is easier to clean.

Despite the large number of advantages, jumbo glass also has some disadvantages. They are not critical and are rather objective costs of the production process. The disadvantages of such products are their heavy weight, high cost and expensive installation, which requires the involvement of special equipment and highly qualified personnel.

Types and thickness

Complementing the theme, jumbo glass size, it is worth pointing out what is presented on the market in the form of a traditional transparent material having a thickness of 4-20 millimeters. This is a functional canvas with a decorative, protective coating.

Manufacturers also produce industrial triplex, which does not have a coating, lightened optiwhite with a thickness of 8-12 millimeters. Triplex can be made from both hardened and non-hardened fabric with a total thickness of 48 millimeters.

Jumbo glass format

New technologies and a modern format, which has raw jumbo glass, make it possible to fulfill orders for the production of products of even larger sizes. This expands the capabilities of architects, interior designers and builders who use glass panels with an area of more than 7.5 m² in their work. Currently, jumbo glass is used as the starting material, the size of which is 6000x3210 mm, but this limitation does not last forever, and the dimensions can be increased over time.

Double-glazed windows

Jumbo double-glazed windows come in the following types:

  • tempered tinted;
  • multifunctional tinted triplex - due to the three-layer adhesive layer, pieces of broken glass do not scatter throughout the room;
  • unhardened ready-made triplex with or without energy-saving coating;
  • transparent tempered;
  • non-matte protective – characterized by increased strength and resistance to deformation.

As additional functions, products can be reinforced with a protective film of class A1, A2, A3, explosion-proof texture K4/PA and a 3M solar protection shell. They can be made in an arched shape, in the form of a polygon.

Design features are reflected in the decorative organic glass insert. This type of glazing involves a multifunctional assembly and a frame of 16-20 millimeters.

Jumbo glass can have an increased size, an ultraviolet printed pattern, or a sand matte finish. The coatings are supplemented with solvent-printed film or decorative film.

Installation is carried out using a profile aluminum or steel system. They use steel installation with a clamping profile, point and combined spider installation.

What it is

Jumbo glass is a large-format sheet of glass or double-glazed unit used in the construction of structures with large light openings. The definition of “Jumbo” comes from the English language, where it means “giant, large-sized.” In turn, the word came into English from Africa, where “Jumbo” was the name given to circus elephants because of their large size.

The name of the glass in the English manner stuck. It sounds short and succinct, unlike the word large-sized.

Due to the high loads on large glass, it was given increased strength. This is achieved in several ways:

  • polishing - by removing microcracks on both sides of the glass, technologists increased the surface tension (the intensity of intermolecular forces acting on the surface of the glass mass increased);
  • glass tempering;
  • triplex production.

At the same time as the strength increases, the energy efficiency and optical characteristics increase.

Where are they used?

The scope of application of double-glazed windows is wide due to the ability to implement classical, non-standard architectural ideas. They look good, create a comfortable, cozy atmosphere inside, visually enlarge the space and fill the room with light and warmth.

Jumbo glass is used to create:

  • showcases;
  • stained glass;
  • dimensional glass fencing;
  • industrial partitions;
  • facade glazing of commercial and municipal buildings.

This method is used for panoramic glazing in Gothic-style houses, cafes, car showrooms, and office buildings.

Examples of installation of large glass

Car showrooms, boutique windows, shops in shopping centers, cottages - we worked with all possible objects.

Audi City Moscow on st. Nikolskaya 10. We delivered and installed glass for shop windows and the entrance area.

It seems that you can touch the car. But it won't work. Breaking tempered glass with explosion-proof film K4/RA will also not work.

Country house in the Moscow region. Glass 4800*3000 mm on a vacuum grip. Delivery and installation price: RUB 21,000. The cost of glass brand “M1” (manufactured by Optiwhite, Germany): 120,000 rubles.

Jumbo glazing is expensive, but it's worth it.

Bent glass (bent along the radius of the facade) 3000x2000 mm was installed in the center of Moscow, Khilkov Street. Brand “M1”.

Making glass to size took 12 days and cost the customer about 250,000 rubles.

Installed using special equipment and vacuum grip within 1 day.

Features of installation of jumbo glass

  1. You need to prepare the installation site
    . The frame must withstand the substantial weight of jumbo glass. As a rule, we work together with builders who perform the necessary load calculations at the project stage. If they haven’t done this, then we’ll take on this job ourselves.
  2. Access for a truck with a manipulator is required
    . Sometimes it is difficult to drive up to a country house due to building materials, dirt on the site or the presence of wires, trees, or lawn. Then we use special equipment (mini-spider crane). These issues are worked out in advance at the project discussion stage.

Panoramic glazing is increasingly becoming part of our lives and is becoming an indispensable attribute of a modern home. It allows you to make the space much lighter and more spacious!

While requests for increasing glazing area are growing, manufacturers are not standing still and are trying not only to satisfy customer needs, but also to anticipate them.

So. Recently, windows of not just large, but huge format have been gaining popularity. They are called “jumbo”, which translated from English “jumbo” sounds like “giant, large-sized”. The maximum size of solid glass is 6000*3210 mm, glass units with dimensions of 5900*3000 mm are created from it, and the thickness of the glass varies from 10 to 16 mm.

In addition to their size, windows of this format are distinguished by high strength and sound insulation, and also have better optical characteristics due to a larger light penetration area.

Despite all the advantages, jumbo windows have several disadvantages, mainly related to cost.

  • High price

Depends on the final size, on average it is 30-100 thousand per sq.m. excluding the cost of the frame, with a frame from 50 to 150 thousand per sq.m. That is, ONE window of the maximum possible size of 5.9 * 3 meters together with the frame will cost more than 2.5 million rubles! But this is only the price of the finished product, excluding delivery and installation.

  • The weight is as huge as the size

The weight of a double-glazed window is approximately 80-90 kg per 1 sq.m., usually the minimum weight of a finished jumbo-format double-glazed window starts from 500 kg and, together with the frame, reaches 2.5 tons!

  • Expensive installation

Installing windows requires highly qualified personnel and special equipment using a crane. The cost of installation varies from 200 to 400 thousand rubles. Here you need to add the cost of delivery on the so-called “jumbo truck” - this is a special oversized delivery accompanied by the traffic police, which costs from 100 thousand rubles. Another disadvantage related to installation is installation restrictions, because not every house has the necessary spacious entrance and free space for the crane to operate.

In Russia, there are still a few production units that create windows of this format, and even fewer that produce the glass itself. I heard about factories in Europe and Asia that produce glass of larger sizes, up to 9 meters in length, but I did not find information about them. If you know anything about such companies, please share the names or links, I will be grateful.

Despite the fact that this is still quite an expensive pleasure, I am sure that large-sized windows will increasingly appear in private homes. I thank my colleague Dmitry Denisov for clarifications during the preparation of the article. If you are interested in the topic of panoramic and other glazing, I recommend watching our old interview. By the way, if you have already decided to update the windows in your house, you can safely write to Dmitry.

PS The most popular video on TikTok, which has gained almost 700 on my account, is a review of a jumbo format window, with a height of “only” 4 m 38 cm. So, if you install a solid window of at least the maximum possible size in Russia 5900 *3000 mm., you will already surprise most of your friends
