Locks, Accessories
A deadbolt lock is one of the most unpretentious, but at the same time reliable locking mechanisms that have proven themselves to be excellent. It is easy to maintain and just as easy to install.
Rack lock with keys
Locking mechanism device
The word “crossbar” is translated as bolt, crossbar, bolt. Actually. the translation indicates the principle of operation of such an overhead rack lock.
Important! The entrance lock bolt is part of the locking mechanism, and it is used to close the door. May take the form of plates or rods made of metal or plastic.
The key feature of this type of locking mechanism is the opening method. In it, the key does not turn, but moves linearly, perpendicular to the plane of the door, as if being pressed into the hole. Due to this, the key is long and has oblique slots on it, which makes it difficult to carry in conjunction with ordinary ones.
The bolt also has slots similar to those on the key.
The lock design consists of the following components:
- Steel body. Moreover, there is no common size for cases; they can be varied.
- The bolt (rail) is a locking mechanism that is also a deadbolt. This is a bar or lath made of steel, it contains teeth and machined grooves. Sometimes you can find models of garage locks of this type with forward and reverse stroke of the bolt.
- Spring - it is responsible for pressing the bolt when the key is removed from the hole.
- A key with slots corresponding to the grooves in the bolt.

Attention to the key
A deadbolt lock has a complex structural component - a key. He can be:
- round or flat;
- different lengths and thicknesses;
- cutting of recesses can be on one or both sides;
- they all must have a specific angle of inclination.
This makes it very difficult to make a duplicate. In addition to the fact that it is difficult to select a workpiece, manual finishing is also required. In this case, it will not be superfluous to know how to open such a locking mechanism without a key. The options are as follows:
- You need 2 screwdrivers. They should be flat and thin enough to fit into the keyhole. The first screwdriver will “catch” the crossbar notch and move it to the side. Next, a second one is inserted, which fixes the position of the crossbar. Then repeat the operation until it opens.
- Key wedge. For this method you will need a wooden wedge; it needs to be driven into the keyhole and pulled out. You need to use soft wood, this will leave notches on it, which will later allow you to use the wedge as a key.
- Pressing out the door leaf using a “crowbar”, which must be inserted between the door jamb and the door. Through the resulting gap, you can move the crossbars using a screwdriver. This method is not always effective, since such locking mechanisms are more susceptible to intellectual hacking than physical hacking.
Complex key
Note! Before manipulating the lock, you need to treat the lock with a rust remover; WD-40 is best.
Operating principle
Mechanisms that are completely different in design work the same way. The device is activated by pressing the key, the grooves with teeth on the slats and the key interlock. Thanks to mechanical pressure, the bolt moves, and the door, for example, can be opened. There are two types of designs of such devices:
- with straight stroke;
- with reverse rack and pinion motion (except for simple pressing, the mechanism must be pulled towards you).
Some models are designed to be locked in a locked position for added security. But this method does not always help with universal master keys: to open the bolt device, you just need to move the rail in some way. From the inside, a door with such a lock can be opened with a key or a special handle.
A rack lock can have two different operating principles; they have the same resistance to burglary
Areas of use
Although these locks have a strong metal structure, they are not able to block the path of even a novice thief. The deadbolt lock belongs to the first security class, that is, to less reliable devices. Such locks should not be used in places where expensive equipment and other valuables are stored, or as an entrance. But at the same time, they do an excellent job of providing additional constipation.
They are often and effectively used on:
- garage doors;
- gates on the street;
- doors of utility rooms, warehouses;
- change houses;
- barns;
- The deadbolt lock is used for roller shutters. Moreover, it is installed on the gearbox and engine, which ensures blocking of the structure.
Types of deadbolt locks
The design of locking mechanisms has been revised and improved more than once. This fully applies to crossbar devices. So, when talking about simplicity and low burglary resistance, for the most part, they mean either an additional element or the simplest option for a closet or garage.
- The deadbolt lock is mounted on utility room entrance doors, on roller shutters, on garage doors, and on metal cabinets. The advantage of the device is that it is installed after installation of the leaf or gate. The downside is that the mechanism is essentially in the public domain. Resistance to burglary in this case is determined by the number and location of the locking pins.

- Mortise - mounted in steel and wooden sashes of any kind and type. This option is considered the most optimal model for an apartment: the locking device is hidden in the canvas and is inaccessible. In addition, the “unexpected” placement of the bolts can also confuse burglars. The photo shows a mortise device.
- A deadbolt lock with a lever secret is an improved option, although it is also mainly used for locking garages and utility rooms. This is a single-system lock with 3 to 5 bolts and a rotary handle. As a rule, devices are equipped with armored plates, which, in general, increases the safety of the mechanism to burglar resistance class 4.
When choosing such a mechanism, you should pay attention to the number of crossbars: the more, the more reliable the model.
- Mechanism with a cylinder secret - in relation to force, this model is more stable, but less reliable when opened with a master key than a high-quality cylinder lock. They are equipped with 4–5 plates, a rotary handle, and, as a rule, the cylinder is protected by an armored plate. Quite an acceptable alternative for an apartment.
- Electromechanical structures – Yb-500a Led, for example. What it is? The device has a built-in reed switch, which, when closed, closes the solenoid contact. At the same time, the bolt extends and locks the sash. Typically, the deadbolt lock is equipped with both a mechanical and an electromechanical drive so that in the event of a power outage it is possible to open and close the door.
According to safety rules, in the absence of current, the electromechanical lock must be open. Yb-500aLed works exactly on this principle.
The locking device is equipped with 4–5 bolts and a transcoding device. The handle is missing. Models equipped with autonomous power supplies are more reliable. The video demonstrates the operation of various locking devices.
Advantages and disadvantages of the locking mechanism
There are advantages, among them:
- Affordable price.
- Ease of use - you can open it from the inside without a key, which ensures that the key will not be forgotten.
- The mechanism is simple and durable, so rack and pinion locks rarely fail.
- Easy to install - it's a padlock.
Internal design of the deadbolt lock
Disadvantages:
- The mounting holes of such a locking mechanism differ from the standard ones, so if you have to change it to a more reliable one, difficulties may arise.
- You can open it using a screwdriver or even a nail. This is done by moving the plates through the gap between the leaf and the door frame.
- Making a duplicate key if lost is problematic.
Common types
Deadbolt locks are divided into several types according to their main characteristics: installation method, material of manufacture, appearance and even the level of complexity of the mechanism. But there are only two main types according to the type of construction.
Padlocks
Such models are very common - they are used as locks for lockers in some fitness clubs, for locking utility rooms or garages. Despite the aforementioned reliability of deadbolt locks, this type does not differ in this characteristic; they are quite easy to open or hack
, but only if you have special skills.
Mortise deadbolt locks
The very name of the lock suggests that it will not stand out too much on the surface of the door or gate.
It has a high level of reliability thanks to the so-called crab system. The fastening rods are installed around the entire perimeter of the lock and are mounted directly into the door, which makes them resistant to burglary.
Installation
Installing it is not difficult, since such a lock does not cut in, but is applied. To do this you will need the following tools:
- drill;
- drill;
- pliers and screwdriver;
- Bulgarian;
- ruler;
- welding and metal plate if the door is made of metal.
To prevent sparks from getting into your eyes, use special glasses.
Installation process:
- Determine the installation location of the lock, and it is important to calculate the installation height for ease of use.
- Mark the points for drilling holes. It is necessary to take into account the contours for the key. To do everything correctly, the lock is applied to the door.
- You need to mark the end taking into account the thickness of the lock.
- Drill holes around the perimeter at the marked points.
- The housing is placed on the marking points and bolted.
- Next, the keyhole is installed.
- The second part is mounted on the door frame in the same way.
The accuracy of drilling holes affects the quality of the lock.

Installation
Despite what was said above about the difficulty of installing deadbolt locks, it is possible to do it yourself. But you can only install a hinged crossbar mechanism with your own hands. First of all, you need to protect your eyes. This requires special safety glasses. You will also need several special tools if you have experience working with some of them.
These are the following:
- Bulgarian;
- pliers and screwdrivers;
- welding machine;
- drill and drill bits for it.
Below are brief instructions for installing such locking mechanisms.
Mark the installation location of the mechanism
It is very important to correctly calculate the height of the lock and the distance from the edge. Approximately, it should be at a level just below the waist of the average person. Attach the mechanism to the door to mark the drilling points. Next, make markings on the end
It is important to take into account the thickness of the installed mechanism. Using a drill, drill holes along the edges of the end. It is the correctly drilled holes that guarantee the strength of the “fit” of the locking mechanism. Place the body on the door to mark. Fasten with bolts. Install a keyhole. The second part of the door lock is installed in the same way.
How to choose?
With the improvement of technology, even this not very reliable lock has been improved - the security class has been increased. Manufacturers produce multi-locking devices that have additional levels of protection. The handle in them can be raised to a certain angle, and with the help of a key the mechanism is locked.
The lock bolt must meet the following requirements:
- Withstand up to several hundred kilograms.
- Have shockproof properties.
- The metal of the crossbar must be hard so as not to succumb to a hacksaw.
- There must be a gap for movement in the lock, but it must be small.
- The door must be securely locked in the closed position.
