The trend of recent years is the use of wood components in the production of plastic window sill panels, which increases the environmental friendliness of the product. Moeller uses wood flour, FiberSill uses wood fibers. The resulting products are distinguished by increased strength and presentable appearance.

Variety of shapes and colors

If you prefer window sills of a standard rectangular shape, you can choose a material of any shade.
Connoisseurs of the classics love white, beige colors, as well as light artificial stone with small inclusions or a marbled texture. For modern interiors with bright accents, we can offer the most unusual solutions. Bay window sills are not only functional, but also act as decoration. You can order a corner or radius window sill, which will not only become a decoration, but will also be suitable for rooms with a non-standard layout.

For small apartments and houses, you can choose a window sill that is a single unit with a dining table or desk. For the kitchen we can also offer an option that smoothly transitions into the countertop.

Artificial stone lends itself well to processing, so you can make a window sill of any shape from it. To add completeness to the product, you can choose original ears or a decorative edge for it.

Window sill measurement

Measurements are taken only after the window is installed, only in this case will they be accurate and the product will fit perfectly. Based on the measurements, technical specifications for preparing the screed are given, and a product of the required shape and size is made from acrylic stone.

Some clients prefer to take measurements themselves and order a finished product with certain parameters. In this case, we guarantee that the ordered window sill will meet the characteristics stated by the client. According to their own standards, they often order small window sills for small windows or for a window sill block (when combining a loge and a room or kitchen).

Shpros: structural and inter-glass

Plastic windows with a golden layout
Shpros are elements of a frame structure that divide the window area into separate segments. In old wooden windows, such a solution was necessary to give rigidity to the frame and install the glass in the frame in separate pieces.

In modern products, real structural interlocks, which are an integral part of the binding, are rare. They are mainly used for wooden window-door units or panoramic structures to enhance a large glazing area. The greater the number of crossbars (shpros) provided in the frame, the more durable the structure will be.

Windows with frames

Disadvantages of this type of design:

  • increasing the cost of the finished product due to the use of more consumables and more complex technology;
  • making the window block heavier, which is often undesirable or unacceptable when glazing a balcony;
  • deterioration of the thermal insulation qualities of the window; The main heat leakage from the room occurs through the junction of the glass and the profile; a large number of layouts in the design of a double-glazed window leads to increased heat loss and heating costs;
  • increased likelihood of depressurization of the glass unit at the joints of parts;
  • Manufacturing windows with crossbars with proper quality requires a high level of qualification from the craftsman.

For plastic products, imitation is more often used - decorative strips are installed between the glasses and secured at the production stage.

Shpros inside the double glazed window

Decorative strips do not interfere with window cleaning

In addition to their elegant appearance, such products acquire additional resistance to vibrations and deformations during operation. Installations inside a sealed structure are reliably protected from the effects of adverse environmental factors, mechanical damage and retain their original appearance for a long time.

Artificial marble window sills

Along with window sills made of natural marble, window sills made of artificial materials that imitate natural stone are also widespread. Their cost is lower and they are lighter in weight. Modern technologies make it possible to achieve the closest possible similarity in the texture and color of artificial materials to natural originals. For many people this is a great alternative.

Mounting options

You can fix the plastic window sill on the balcony using polyurethane foam, brackets, brackets, or a combined method. For example, if the slab is wide and massive, then it should not be fixed with foam alone. It is better to use it and additional brackets.

Each method has its own characteristics:

  1. Polyurethane foam. One of the most popular methods of attaching window sills. It is enough to install the slab on the prepared base. After this, you need to fill all the cracks with foam. The method is simple and fast. Window sills not only made of plastic, but also of other materials can be attached to polyurethane foam.
  2. Brackets. The widest slabs require the use of brackets. They are made in the shape of the letter L from metal plates. Such products work as a stand for the panel.
  3. Staples. This method allows installation work to be completed fairly quickly. Brackets are plates that spring; they are mounted on a base under the frame. Their lower fragment is directed upward, due to this the fastening element fits as tightly as possible to the frame.
  4. Adhesive compositions. If stand profiles are not used during construction work, the slabs are installed directly on the surface of the window, glue will do. It is applied in strips 1 cm wide. After this, the window sill is placed under the frame; it must be pressed to the base. The joints between the frame and the window sill should be treated with silicone sealant after installation. To prevent the panel from moving, place a weight on it and leave it until the adhesive mixture dries completely.

What to choose: acrylic or quartz?

Acrylic stone is made from a mixture that includes mineral fillers (usually white clay), dyes and acrylic resin (usually about 30% by weight) and pigment additives (no more than 5%). The main brands of stone presented on our market are Corian, G-stone, Hi-Mack, Montelli, Staron. Products from different companies differ in color palette, wear resistance, and price. The estimated cost of a two-layer (chipboard + stone) panel with a thickness of 35–40 mm is 20–26 thousand rubles. per 1 m2, but the price of window sills is always calculated individually.

Acrylic stone is easy to process: it is easy to saw and polish. Parts made of this material are connected without visible joints - they are glued with a special glue, and then the seam is polished with a grinder. If you need a window sill board of considerable width and a complex shape (for example, radius), on which you can sit comfortably to watch street events, then acrylic stone will be one of the best materials for it. Unfortunately, it does not withstand solvents well and is relatively easy to scratch.

Quartz stone (agglomerate) is made from quartz powder or stone chips, pigment additives and polyester resin (no more than 9% by weight). In terms of hardness, quartz agglomerate is close to granite. Compared to acrylic composite, it is tactilely cooler and more fragile. The material is produced under the brands Cambria, Silestone, QuartzForms, etc., its cost is from 14 thousand rubles. for 1 m2.

Window sills made of artificial stone are manufactured by small companies (dealers of material manufacturers), mainly to order with a lead time of 2–4 weeks. Dimensional restrictions are dictated mainly by considerations of ease of delivery and installation: sheets of acrylic stone 76 × 368 cm, quartz agglomerate - 144 × 305 cm are supplied from the factory. It is better to entrust installation to a team from the manufacturer, however, in this case, you should carefully monitor the quality of workmanship works

Which material is better for thermal insulation?

Acrylic stone insulates heat well, while quartz stone, on the contrary, has very high thermal conductivity. Why is this important to know? In severe frosts, a window sill made of agglomerate can transfer cold from a wall or window into the room - sometimes condensation from the room air even falls on it. Therefore, when installing such products, the window installation seam (in particular, the area under the ebb) must be carefully insulated with polyurethane foam.

Thermal insulating properties are also important if you install a wide window sill that protrudes into the room. An acrylic product will partially block the upward flow of warm air from the heating radiator, and the window may begin to fog up, so you need to take care of the convection holes in the window sill board in advance. The agglomerate will heat up and form an air flow itself - there is no need for holes.

Preparatory work

First you need to prepare the tool and material. Here's what you need to have:

  • Hacksaw or electric jigsaw;
  • Building level;
  • Tape measure and pencil;
  • Perforator with a set of drills and chisels;
  • Polyurethane foam.

Linings ensure a snug fit of the window sill to the frame

In addition, wooden blocks or special PVC linings, as well as a spray foam gun, may be useful. Based on the condition of the window opening, these elements may not be enough. In this case, you should provide perforated plates for fastening the window sill.

Features of the production of marble window sills

As noted above, marble is an expensive and unique option for decorating a room. The value of marble lies in the relief patterns on its surface. This pattern is considered unique to each marble slab and is often compared to a human fingerprint. When installing marble window sills, it is important to think not only about the beauty of the room, but also about functionality. So, you can combine a window sill and a marble countertop. And if the window sill is installed in the living room, then for practicality you should choose marble for the hall in calm shades.

Combining a marble window sill and countertop

The manufacturing process of marble window sills is very complex and labor-intensive, which is the reason for the high cost of installation. Some manufacturers, in order to reduce prices for their products, resort to various imitations of marble.

Advice from the experts

Some tips on what to consider and how to install a bay window with your own hands from professionals.

It is necessary to lay insulation. The mistake of many is to limit themselves to polyurethane foam. But it only strengthens the structure itself. Insulation will help protect against drafts, cold and other external irritants.

You cannot connect plastic bay windows using black self-tapping screws that are designed for working with wood. Plastic tends to change its density when exposed to temperature. Outwardly, you may not notice this, but a self-tapping screw that is not intended for plastic may not withstand the load and burst or fly out.

At the measurement stage, it is better to invite a professional service. A construction ruler is also suitable for measurements, but every millimeter is important here. It is better to use the help of a master who has a more accurate tool.

Bay windows

They have been used for:

  1. Firstly, the first bay windows were created as elements of defense. The fact is that such numbers are very convenient for archers, especially if the enemy is trying to climb the wall of the fortress.
  2. Secondly, bay windows and toilets were applied. And again the main argument was that this project was a drain, which was very convenient, since all the waste came out directly on the outer wall of the fortress.

  3. Thirdly, such structures could be used as the altar of an internal temple. Everything is very simple, but everything will repeat itself, related to this presentation, but in a different direction. The fact is that, in accordance with the rules of the Catholic Church, the presence of any premises above the altar is prohibited.

Briefly about bay windows

Bay windows get their name from the German word “bay window,” which refers to an architectural element protruding from the flat façade of a building. Windows installed in such cavities are called bay windows.

Such glazing is a beauty of layout, a functional source of light and heat. A bay window fills the room with natural light for most of the day.

Preparatory work

The preliminary stage includes work on major preparation of the base of the future window sill, namely:

  1. Complete cleaning of the base from dust and dirt;
  2. Elimination of any voids or cracks using polyurethane foam;
  3. Alignment.

Before directly installing the window sill, it is necessary to mount the window frames and consider a system for the natural drainage of condensate. After this, it is necessary to pay attention to the condition of the slopes and, if necessary, remove defects; it is important to ensure that the frame structure is completely insulated from moisture (especially important if a wooden window sill is installed). Such measures must be applied in unstable climates and frequent temperature changes, otherwise the window sill board will become deformed.

Installing a window sill on a balcony

Almost anyone can install a window sill on their own - it does not require advanced skills or physically strenuous work. The main key is endurance and precision in manipulations. Full equipment is also important: the presence of all the necessary elements will greatly facilitate the work of improving the balcony.

Installation of a bay window sill

Bay window sills have the shape of a semicircle and are used on designer balconies. The material of the bay window sill in 80% of cases is natural or artificial stone.

Advice. When installing such a structure, it is important to comply with all calculations; it is recommended to first draw a detailed sketch with measurements.

Bay window countertops consist of several elements, so this is a case where measurements and painstaking fitting and alignment are the keys to a successful installation.

For the base, it is recommended to use white cement mortar or cement glue. They evenly fill the base under the window sill.

  1. The brackets are mounted to the wall with strong metal screws.
  2. The window sill elements are installed by adjusting the level and comparing the parts. Tabletops can be fastened together with adhesives.
  3. The spaces are filled with polyurethane foam, and the structure is left to dry under the load.

Installation of a wooden window sill

If you decide to install a wooden tabletop on the balcony, you can use the technology for installing a plastic structure.

A new installation method is the use of metal brackets.

Special brackets are attached to the previously installed profile, between which the tabletop will be inserted. This method is quite simple, but requires precise measurements and calculations.

For a wide structure, additional installation of brackets or supports to the profile is recommended.

The option of installing a wooden window sill in the usual way involves the use of cement or gypsum and includes several steps:

  • surface preparation and cleaning;
  • filling with cement;
  • installation of beacons - wooden blocks to maintain the horizontalness of the window sill;
  • pouring cement 5mm above the beacons;
  • applying an insulating film;
  • installation of countertops;
  • alignment.

Installation of a stone structure

To install the heaviest version of the countertop, it is advisable to use a combination of cement mortar and metal supports.

The prepared base is filled with ready-made mortar, on which a stone countertop is placed.

When installing a stone window sill on a balcony, it is advisable to enlist the support of a second person - the weight of the structure will be at least 100 kg.

Size

To determine the correct length, you need to measure the width of the window opening. Add 6-10 cm to the resulting figure. As a result, you should get window sill protrusions on each side beyond the slopes. The minimum size of protrusions is 3 cm.

On the balcony, the window sills are cut into the wall on one side. At the door they should protrude one centimeter. When calculating the width, add 2 centimeters to the total figure - this is exactly how much is needed to get under the windows. This spade is necessary to prevent the windows on the balcony from fogging up.

The ledge on the balcony must be made taking into account your wishes. The optimal option is 5 centimeters. If you want to use the window sill as a work area, then the protrusion can be from 7 to 20 centimeters. However, do not forget that with a large protrusion it will be necessary to install special brackets for stability.

Also, when working, you can use the formula to calculate the length and width of the window sill.
