There are many methods used to attach curtains. Among them are Velcro, with which you can install curtains made of various materials.
Velcro curtains are convenient and practical primarily because they do not require holes drilled in plastic or wood
What is Velcro
This type of fastening is used quite widely: in the manufacture of garments, shoes, accessories and other goods. It consists of two tape elements: on one there are microhooks, and on the other there are the same small loops.
When both tapes touch, the hooks cling to the loops, sticking tightly to each other.
Types of curtains with Velcro
Since the advent of Velcro curtains, they have undergone many changes, and their range has become more diverse.
If previously such curtains were used mainly for decorating balconies and loggias, now they are used in almost all types of premises. They are fixed on special cornices, into which a lifting/lowering mechanism is mounted. It can be either mechanical or electrical on the control panel. They are also sometimes simply attached to the bar with Velcro.
In the assortment of modern curtains with Velcro, you can find options for every taste and color. Manufacturers present a wide selection of curtains from different fabrics, in several stylistic solutions.
The most common are four types of styles:
- Roman curtains;
- Japanese;
- roll;
- cafe curtains or hourglass.
In addition, Velcro is also used in fastening tulle.
Roman curtains
Such products fit perfectly into any interior; you just need to correctly combine the range of shades. This is a good option for finishing windows on balconies, living rooms and other rooms or in offices.
They can be lowered and raised to whatever level you wish.
Where it is inappropriate to hang long and wide curtains, a Roman blind will soften the look of a narrow window. They are complemented by such decorative elements as ribbons, embroidery, stitching, braid, etc.
Designers create intricate patterns from them.
There are three types of Roman blinds:
- Classic. They are a smooth fabric that, when rising, forms horizontal folds. It folds evenly, starting from the bottom. This type is used in rooms with a strict style, in rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows or on loggias.
- Cascade. The canvas has folds when fully opened, and after lifting, a cascading drapery is created. They look more elegant than classic ones, so they are used in more sophisticated and warm interiors.
- Frameless. The design of cascading and classic curtains involves the use of slats, but in this option they are absent. The fabric is gathered in loose folds on the sides or in the center. A self-adhesive type of Velcro or lambrequin can be attached to the top.
Nowadays, the frameless type of Roman blinds is quite rarely used, although it was the very first one that arose and served as the basis for the creation of modern classic products.
Japanese curtains
Japanese style is distinguished by lightness and laconicism. These characteristics are successfully embodied by curtains made based on an eastern country. Currently, they are in demand among consumers and are used by designers to create light, fresh and original interiors of an apartment or house.
They serve not only as curtains for windows, but also as partitions for dividing rooms, screens for niches, etc.
Japanese curtains have several features
- They do not fold either vertically or horizontally. And in order for them to be perfectly straight, a plastic strip is sewn along the bottom line.
The sliding mechanism is designed like a blind. The canvases are divided into several sections, each of which can reach a width of up to 1 meter. They move apart thanks to a complex cornice system made up of several slats. Each canvas has its own “track” along which it moves to the right or left.
The curtains are secured with Velcro to slats equipped with roller runners that move along the gutters between the slats.
For the manufacture of such curtains, mainly natural materials are used: cotton, bamboo, straw, linen. But modern manufacturers often combine them with synthetic fibers.
The palette of shades is dominated by pastels, but bright elements are also often found. Plain curtains are being replaced by products decorated with large patterns.
Roller blinds
Such products are the heritage of our time. They help not only to create a pleasant atmosphere in the room, but also to reliably hide those present in it from prying eyes. Some types are created specifically for those who need to sleep during the day.
Such curtains do not allow sunlight to penetrate into the room, providing complete darkness.
The peculiarity of their design is that they are wound onto the roller when they are lifted.
Control is carried out using a cord, but there are also automated systems controlled by a remote control.
- These curtains are very versatile. They are suitable for almost any room, and are also conveniently located on sloping roof windows. In the case of direct attachment to the sashes, their advantage is the ability to open and close the window without changing the position of the curtains.
- Manufacturers often produce canvases impregnated with a special composition that allows them not to absorb dust and not fade when exposed to sunlight. They are also distinguished by a low degree of soiling. Caring for roller blinds consists only of regular vacuuming.
Short curtains
This option is great for decorating a balcony or kitchen. It is in these rooms that dust, soot from the street or from cooking, and high humidity often appear. Therefore, short curtains will need to be washed frequently.
Natural materials such as linen or cotton are preferred.
A combination of synthetics with natural fabric is allowed. Curtains made of bamboo look very beautiful, giving the room coziness and ethnicity. For the kitchen and balcony, short curtains with Velcro are the ideal solution. If desired, the balcony can be turned into a full-fledged additional room by choosing satin or jacquard decor.
Curtains-cafe or hourglass in the interior
This type of curtain is intended to serve more of a decorative function. Their design is quite simple and consists of a lightweight canvas attached to the window opening at the top and bottom and gathered in the middle with tape or cord. Such an elegant relic of the past returns to us from the 30s of the 20th century.
At that time, it was fashionable to install small curtains on the glass in cabinet doors.
Hourglass-shaped curtains add a touch of aristocracy and elegance to a modern interior. They look great as large, solid canvases on full-wall or floor-length windows. They are used in commercial premises, hotels, conference rooms, restaurants and living rooms.
Thanks to a huge range of fabrics and accessories, tailors create unique textile masterpieces that serve as beautiful frames for windows, diffuse the sun's rays or divide space into zones.
Homemade cornice with Velcro.
Don't want to devote your finances to buying a curtain rod that has a Velcro fastener? Not a problem - you can make a similar cornice at home on your own.
You need to find a wooden beam that will be 15-20 cm longer than the length of the window, Velcro tape, mounting adhesive, several plastic dowels and self-tapping screws.
All parts can be obtained without any problems.
When you decide on the height at which you will fix the cornice, you can move on. Velcro tape is glued to the beam, and then the beam itself is strengthened.
You can do the opposite, attach the beam first, and then glue the tape.
The soft part of the tape must be sewn to the top of the canvas, after which this edge is attached to the cornice. You won’t be able to open such curtains, so you should get a lifting and lowering mechanism. The photo of the Velcro curtains clearly shows what happened in the end.
More options
Using Velcro tape you can make not only curtains, but also partitions between rooms. Partitioning off the bed will add a little romance to the relationship. With the help of such ribbons you can even make a kind of screen for changing clothes right in the bedroom.
It is not necessary to use timber when creating curtains with Velcro. You can hang curtains directly on the window sash or opening. For this purpose, it is best to use acrylic sealant.
If necessary, you can safely remove it from your profile in the future. The main thing to remember is that you need to remove the sealant with a spatula, otherwise unpleasant scratches will remain on the window.
Another option: you can attach the tape to the ends of the strips. The stripes should be sewn to the top of the curtains. It turns out that a loop is formed. This option will allow you to smoothly move the curtains to the sides, opening or closing the window.
A very convenient and simple way.
Design options
Velcro curtains mean products made from lightweight materials that are secured with Velcro.
Moreover, products can have different types of design, from simple to special. This group includes models with Velcro loops, varieties with lambrequins, Japanese panels and roller blinds. Each type of curtain has its own characteristics and differs in functionality. For example, roll products, in addition to manual control, provide for the use of a remote control. The panels of such curtains themselves are tightly wound on a shaft. They are compact and miniature, occupying only that part of the window that falls on the glass. At the same time, when opened, the curtains have practically no gaps. These are some of the best models available today, which are purchased to decorate windows for different purposes in rooms.
Japanese panels are attached to a wide cornice with a slider, due to which they can move. Such products are quite unusual; they are evenly stretched curtains, which, if necessary, are moved to the side. They can be used in various modern interior compositions. This is an excellent decoration for plastic windows that does not require additions or layers.
Lambrequins of this type can have a separate curtain rod with Velcro so that the curtains themselves can be moved. Such products can have from one to several layers, provided that they are all made of thin and light materials. Velcro perfectly holds draperies and various types of decoration with folds.
Blind or through options have special fasteners that cover the smooth cornice. These are predominantly rectangular panels that have unfastening loops. Each of them is equipped with its own Velcro. These varieties can be used in different interior design options, which depends on the material used, its color, texture, presence of a pattern or additional curtains.
Advantages and disadvantages
Velcro curtains are easy to install and maintain. Attaching them to a plastic window is easy, and if necessary, you can easily remove and wash them. The Velcro used to secure them is reliable.
It consists of two parts (with soft pile and small hooks), has high stickiness, due to which it can be used in various curtain designs.
These products are distinguished by their aesthetic appeal. Despite their apparent simplicity, they can decorate windows of different stylistic directions. Light and weightless with draperies, they fit harmoniously into classical trends.
Creative, minimalistic and often compact, they can decorate any modern style.
Extraordinary options with bright colors can be hung in rooms with a rustic style. Elegant and pretentious, they are beautiful in ethnic variations of interior settings. In general, the products are not limited to design; in addition, they cope with two functional loads.
These products protect the room from incoming sunlight and make the window look elegant.
However, the inability to use dense and heavy textiles does not make them universal. One cannot ignore the fact that not all products with Velcro can be used as night curtains, since the material is often not dense enough for this. Other disadvantages include the fact that not all products have reliable and durable Velcro.
In addition, they have neither heat nor sound insulation, which is inherent in products made from dense textiles.
Choosing the right one
When buying curtains with Velcro, it is important to initially decide on the type of fastening. In one case it is a single Velcro tape, in the other it is cut into separate fragments located inside the strips that fold into loops when fixing the curtains. The second products are hung on the curtain rod, and the size of the loops should be sufficient for the curtains to slide freely along the rod. Options with self-adhesive hinges can not only be ordered individually according to the measurements of specific windows, but also sewn yourself.
Models with a single Velcro should fit the size of the windows, they are not folded, and when the width is not enough, the curtains look ugly. The fastening of the curtains themselves can be either open or closed. You need to choose the option that suits the design features of the ceiling. In this case, the curtains, which should only cover the window glass, are selected so that their length matches the length of the glass sheet.
Regarding the length of all products, it is important to mention: today it is not customary to hang excessively long curtains on windows, and even more so such options that are attached with Velcro. If you accidentally step on them, this will repeatedly put stress on the Velcro and can gradually break the products themselves.
One cannot ignore the fact that curtains trailing across the floor indicate sloppiness. Looking at them, the effect of imbalance in the room is created, this visually shortens the height of the walls.
Color selection
A variety of Velcro curtains can convey one or another mood in the existing interior of the room. Therefore, they should be selected thoroughly, starting from the existing design style. At the same time, depending on the purpose of the room, various games of color and contrast are allowed.
For example, roller blinds on different windows may have the same material with the same pattern, but different colors.
Light-colored products in niches look good. Visually, they erase the rigid boundaries of rooms, making the room lighter and more spacious. They can be designed in different ways. For example, for one window you can select up to several curtains of the same size, fix them on top with Velcro, and tie them with decorative tiebacks in the middle.
You can slightly modify this design if, in addition to fastening it from above, you fix the curtains with Velcro and from below.
Products on the cornice can be combined with a transparent veil or openwork tulle. They will look beautiful together with roller blinds. At the same time, for roller fabrics you can choose a fabric that fits beautifully into soft folds, and for the main curtains you can use medium-density textiles.
Together, such decor will look light and airy, despite the sometimes rough appearance of self-adhesive loops.
It is better to choose a contrasting color for such curtains, but in soft and muted shades of the color palette. The contrasts of two different tones look especially harmonious today.
It can be white and grey, brown and milky, gray and pale blue, a mix of sand and turquoise.
Contrasts can be conveyed not only through the background, but also through the pattern, which will add variety to the sometimes boring interior design. In addition, it is the use of color to match one of the room’s accessories that will allow the curtains to fit harmoniously, without contradicting the overall concept.
To decorate plastic windows, you can use curtains with geometric patterns and ethnic patterns. Products with a floral theme must be selected especially carefully so as not to simplify the appearance of the windows themselves. For example, such products will look better with the same leaves and solid colors rather than with overly bright roses.
In addition, such colors do not fit into every interior.
Even if the curtains themselves seem beautiful, you need to weigh the appropriateness of the purchase and at least mentally imagine how they might look against the background of existing furniture, central and auxiliary lamps, and accessories.
It is important to understand that diversity can create an imbalance in the perception of space. You need to take something that will not irritate your eyes when looking at the curtains every day. Otherwise, over time, it will be difficult for household members to stay in this room.
How to install curtains on a window without drilling
Traditionally, to hang a curtain, you first need to install the curtain rod by first drilling holes in the wall. Then install the holders for it and secure them securely.
However, many novice home craftsmen are interested in how to attach a curtain to a plastic window, but avoid drilling. This can be done by taking advantage of the Velcro fastening options for curtains.
This fastening method can be used when installing:
- Roman blinds, including roller blinds;
- curtains made in the oriental style, in its broadest sense;
- curtains and curtains with hinges that are connected using Velcro.
Mounting features
Curtains can be attached to the cornice in several ways, in particular using:
- Ties and braid;
- Drawstring and loops;
- Hooks and all kinds of clothespins;
- Eyelets;
- Velcro.
And it is the last option, according to the majority, that is considered the simplest, not requiring special knowledge and skills, as well as financial and time costs.
Velcro curtains can be attached to the window frame without additional timber and without drilling the window with self-tapping screws.
Velcro (that's what it's called) has proven its effectiveness and functionality. Thanks to it, you can easily hang curtains on a plastic or wooden window. This method is especially relevant in small rooms where it is not possible to attach a cornice, and a curtain that is not flush against the wall further reduces the space. When attaching curtains with Velcro to a plastic window, you maintain the integrity of the finish of the window opening.
General Tips
- It is important to choose the right material. The fabric should not be heavy. Light natural or synthetic material is suitable. Such weightless curtains will effectively complete any interior.
- For a minimalistic and modern high-tech style, single-color curtains made from natural materials (linen, chintz) are suitable. And for classic styles, multi-colored, patterned, more delicate fabrics (organza, synthetics) are suitable.
- For a bedroom or nursery, you can choose darker dense fabrics. Japanese curtains made of this material can replace night curtains. And for the kitchen you can choose lighter shades. This will give the room lightness and airiness.
- To add some zest, you can form static curly folds on the fabric. They are attached immediately with adhesive tape, due to which they do not change their position and look very elegant.
Thus, Velcro curtains have the following advantages:
- The most important thing is ease of use. Velcro is the easiest way to attach, which even a child can handle.
- Such curtains hide the cornice; there is no need to think of additional elements for this.
- They do not weigh down the window, they laconically complete and complement the interior, making it light and elegant.
- Suitable for any room and style.
Velcro curtains that are attached to a profile cornice are a very convenient thing in the interior.
See for yourself: the profile cornice can be easily bent at any angle and is perfect for designing non-standard layouts or a bay window. And secondly, speaking about curtains themselves, Velcro fastening will save you from countless hooks and clips, and therefore from headaches.
Advantages
It is not by chance that textile curtains with Velcro are chosen, since the main reason is their many advantages. Products:
- are practical, relevant and easy to use;
- fit harmoniously into any interior style;
- do not interfere with opening the window and do not take up space on the windowsill;
- They are a modern element of decor and decorate the window opening in an original way.
Lightweight curtain material is well held by adhesive tape glued to the frame, so sometimes fastening with self-tapping screws is not required, which violates the integrity of the frame and aesthetics.
Methods of using curtains on self-adhesive tape in the interior
Roller and Roman blinds are an ideal solution for decorating living rooms, kitchens, loggias and balconies. To make such products, textiles are used, and the curtains are attached with Velcro to the window frame, to the wall, to a wooden block, separate strips or a special bracket.
If it is not possible to install a traditional curtain rod, then this is the best option to help quickly solve the problem of window opening design. Curtains can also be attached to a plastic profile without any problems.
In living rooms and other rooms, curtains made of thick or transparent fabrics can be hung on plastic windows.
Their choice depends on the lighting in the room: if the side is sunny, then thick curtains that protect well from direct rays are more suitable. For rooms where there is practically no sun, it will be enough to decorate the window opening with a transparent curtain on loops with Velcro.
In addition to them, you can use roller or Roman blinds, which will only be lowered at night.
A textile fastener on curtains is a simple detail with which you can realize any ideas without buying expensive factory-made accessories for curtains.
Which fabric or paper curtains with Velcro for the balcony and other rooms are best suited depends on the design features of the window frame and the personal wishes of the home/office owners.
Kinds
There are three types of curtains that can be fixed with adhesive tape:
- Short curtains with fastening to the cornice;
- Roman;
- Rolled.
Let's consider each of the options in more detail.
Roller blinds
Curtains for plastic windows that are rolled into a roll are called blinds, roller blinds, and roller blinds. At the top, as a rule, there is a shaft that is hidden in the cassette. The cassette is small in size, making it not particularly noticeable. Roller blinds have many advantages, which is why they have gained such popularity.
Advantages of fabric roller shutters:
- Convenience when opening and closing the window;
- Remote control of the opening and closing process when installing an electric drive;
- A wide selection of colors and textures for curtains, the ability to make an exclusive option;
- Curtains in the form of blinds and mini-rolls do not cover the window sill, so you can place flowers in pots, decorations and other home comfort items on it;
- When attaching curtains to a window frame, you do not need to change the position of the roller in order to open the window;
- There is no need to drill plastic to fix and install the curtain rod, since roller blinds are conveniently attached with Velcro.
The mass of a cassette with a shaft and a roller blind is usually no more than one kilogram, so it is fixed to the window. This saves space. Roller shutters with Velcro completely follow the line of the window. Often several roll cassettes of the same parameters are installed on the balcony. With their help you can change the level of lighting in the room. The Velcro adhesive tape firmly fixes the curtain and at the same time does not prevent it from being removed for cleaning. Reverse fixation does not require any equipment.
Velcro tulle in the apartment
You can decorate windows on a balcony or loggia, in a kitchen or in a country house not only with curtains. An equally relevant idea is tulle with Velcro. Now it is possible to choose options to suit any style and decoration of the room. Such tulle is very practical, adheres to the glass as closely as possible, can be easily removed for washing and can be easily reattached after washing.
Both curtains and tulle with this method of fixation have some advantages:
- long service life;
- convenience and speed when removing and hanging;
- maintaining the functionality of the adhesive tape after washing;
- ease of installation, possibility of fastening without a cornice;
- Products dry quickly after washing and are easy to iron.
Some types of Velcro products will cost less than regular curtains.
Roman curtains
Roman blinds combine classics with all its splendor and modern modernity. They fit almost any room design. When closed, they have an even and smooth structure. By lifting them slightly, neat, elegant folds appear, which is where the name comes from.
Advantages of Roman blinds:
- Maximum free space;
- Easy to use;
- A wide selection of fabrics from which you can make Roman curtains;
- Simple mounting method (also on plastic windows);
- Quick removal of tulle for replacement or cleaning;
- There is an opportunity to make it yourself.
Territory of use
Velcro curtains and curtains are ideal for darkening a room as much as possible. This effect is achieved due to the absence of a light beam between the wall and the curtain itself.
It is functionally and practical to use such fastening of curtains in rooms where it is necessary to close windows during the daytime.
Of course, the balcony is the leading area where windows are decorated using Velcro tape. But no less frequent is the case when Velcro curtains are used to decorate:
- children's room;
- bedroom;
- loggia;
- summer kitchen,
- terrace;
- gazebo.
Curtains for the kitchen with a door to the balcony look very attractive, and most importantly – very practical. Easy care allows you to always give the kitchen a beautiful and well-groomed look.
Making a homemade curtain rod with Velcro
If you don't want to spend money on buying a curtain rod equipped with Velcro tape, you can make one yourself.
To do this, you will need a wooden block 15-20 cm longer than the width of the window, Velcro tape of the same length (its hard part with hooks), “liquid nails” mounting adhesive or acrylic sealant, 3-4 plastic dowels and the same amount self-tapping screws of suitable length.
First, determine the height at which the homemade cornice will be fixed.
It can be fixed either directly on the wall - if the curtains are planned to be short - to the level of the upper edge of the window sill, or on brackets with a distance of 15-20 cm, if the curtains are long, so that hanging freely, they do not touch the window sill.
Velcro tape is glued onto a wooden block, pre-treated with fine sanding paper and coated with varnish or stain, and secured with staples from a construction stapler for secure fastening. You can screw the block with self-tapping screws directly through the Velcro tape.
You can first strengthen the block, and only then stick tape on it or secure it with staples. But this option is less convenient.
The soft part of the Velcro tape is sewn to the upper edge of the prepared curtain fabric using a sewing machine. All that remains is to attach the top edge of the curtain to the cornice, and the curtain will instantly be securely fixed.
This method of fastening with Velcro is static and using curtains that are not equipped with an opening mechanism is inconvenient. Therefore, simultaneously with fixing the curtains with Velcro, they are equipped with a lifting and lowering mechanism.
Control mechanism
How to make a Roman blind control mechanism so that it is both simple and reliable. On the backing piece you have three vertical rows for the rings. They need to be sewn to the curtain. You need to thread a cord into each row.
Place the curtain on the cornice beam. Mark three points for attaching the ring-head bolts. Hardware is screwed into the timber. To prevent them from interfering with the fabric adhering to the cornice, it is necessary to make holes and decorate them with eyelets.
The cords are threaded into the rings on the block in a special order.
- The first cord goes through 1 ring.
- The second is threaded through the ring of its row and through the ring into which the first cord is threaded.
- The third is threaded through all the rings of the cornice.
As a result, all three cords will be threaded through the first ring. Their length should be adjusted so that they simultaneously lift the bottom edge of the curtain when you pull them down.
To prevent the adjustment from getting lost, the cords can be braided.
Screw in one anchor bolt with a ring near the window opening. It will help you fix the edge of the pigtail cord in the desired position. You can simply wrap the braid around the anchor, or you can thread it into the ring and secure the desired position with a spring lock.

Where a ruler or tape measure is visible in the photographs, the unit of measurement on them is the inch.
That's it, the curtain is ready. Have fun creating!
Other Tape Applications
If you don’t want to bother with installation or need a temporary solution, you can use self-adhesive tape.
By gluing it to the ceiling and hanging a curtain on it, you can visually divide the space.
Thanks to this, it is easy to create an office, living room, bedroom in a small apartment, you just need to plan everything well. The advantage of this method is that you can always change the layout without carrying out extensive repair work.
By applying tape in the doorway, 2 separate rooms with free air circulation are created. For this purpose, Roman blinds are often used, which add a special charm to such a “door”.
If the kitchen or loggia is small and the owner does not want to spend a lot of time cleaning, you can use rolled sheets for open cabinets.
The fabric for such curtains should be dense, stiff enough so as not to look like a cheap product and cover the unfinished kitchen. The ability to quickly clean the “doors” by simply removing them and putting them in the washing machine, the ability to create new color schemes, changing the usual environment beyond recognition, attracts housewives who are trying to bring comfort and joy to their apartment.
The ability to change colors, accents, and the number of open and closed shelves in the kitchen and loggia is a definite plus.
Velcro is used in many areas. Now she has come to decorating window openings and rooms, giving the opportunity to show creativity and create a cozy and beautiful space that suits the current needs and moods of the owner.
By removing heavy curtain rods that accumulate dust, this solution is ideal for allergy sufferers.
Easy to install and use, these curtains are easy to clean, without spending a lot of time removing them from the curtain rod, you just need to peel one part from the other and you can wash it right away.
