Choosing curtains for arched windows

Their forms can also be different. You can make the top even, or you can make it in the form of an arch, repeating the shape of the window opening. So, how to sew curtains for arched windows? We provide the answer to this question in this article, describing a detailed master class for one of the many options. After carefully reading the photos and step-by-step instructions, you can easily cope with the task you have set yourself.

Preparing to sew curtains

The diagram shown in the photo shows all the stages clearly. That's it, when the preparation stage is over, you can proceed to the next one - creating patterns.

Now perhaps the most interesting part of the work begins - we will make a pattern for the future curtain (pay attention to the photo below) and then transfer it to the fabric.

But before you go shopping, measure your arched window for which you plan to sew curtains. But you need to measure correctly:

Today I will answer one of these questions, which was sent to me by a visitor to my site named Olga:

I previously wrote on my website that if the window is decorated with beautiful curtains and lambrequins, then it not only plays an important role in protecting you from prying eyes, but also gives your home comfort and warmth. eye.

Regarding the construction of the pattern for the upper curly edge of the curtain, you can use the “Reverse scaling method”, which is described in great detail in THIS ARTICLE, or use the Nanocad program.

For the width of the curtain, you need to take the width of the window, multiplied by the drapery coefficient plus allowances for processing the side edges.

How to do this, see my video tutorial:

Tall arched windows are beautiful in themselves, and in this case it is best to limit yourself to minimal decoration, especially in a modern style interior. A good option for decorating an arched window with curtains in a modern style would be panels made of thin linen fabric in contrasting colors. They can move on a simple double rail and create a spectacular, varied and at the same time modest design of elegant arched windows.

For sliding panels, use only lightweight single-layer fabric: silk taffeta, silk, silk velvet, fine linen.

Features of arched cornices

It is equally important to choose: cornices, curtains and strings. They will either have blinds on them, depending on the choice of decorative item. Which element should you give preference to? It is advisable to choose those designs that can repeat the shape of the window.

Advantages are most often given to profile cornices, which are mounted directly into a niche with an arch.

And due to the flexibility of the material, it is possible to bend it to the desired radius. Profile cornices are sold in various lengths and it is possible to purchase them in any color to match the shade of the frame.

Beautiful curtains for arched windows in a classic interior

To many, modern life seems feverishly fast. Given the right circumstances, modern style can balance this feeling, creating a feeling of peace and order. An essential feature of any modern decorative scheme is minimalism: decoration and furnishings of a room are reduced to the bare minimum, with clean, uninterrupted lines and smooth surfaces reigning in the room, creating a feeling of spaciousness and airiness.

The eclectic style is suitable for fabrics with an unusual combination of colors and textures. Linen with a printed taupe pattern on a white background and bright pink motifs, sheared pink velvet on a yellowish-green base, blue shanzhan taffeta with a black flock pattern.

Arched windows are a real gift for lovers of eclecticism. Stylish and unusual, they look very impressive. The combination of several shades of the same torus color in the design of arched windows will create an atmosphere of melancholy luxury.

To add another stylish touch, choose carved or molded cornices. A cherry wood cornice with ball finials, a mahogany cornice with gilt acorn finials, or a twisted mahogany cornice with vase finials would be a great addition to your window decoration.

Features of arched windows: photo

In general, the appearance of arched windows on houses looks very stylish, but it is similar to conventional frames. If the doors are divided into several parts, in particular 6, then the design will be more harmonious and pleasing to the eye. Exactly how the sections will be arranged depends on the shape and size of the product. In small windows, a pair of sashes are made so as not to interfere with the penetration of light and to eliminate distortions in the proportionality of the frame.

Important! If the room has 2 arched windows with opening transoms, then it is desirable that they be located symmetrically to each other.

In addition, you need to remember that transoms should open not in a way that is convenient for the residents of the house, but as required by the installation technology. Arched window frames can be blind, that is, without a window or opening sash, as well as an opening view. Opening structures are divided into several types. Namely: folding, rotating, sliding, hinged and combined.

We sew curtains for an arched window

1. Measure the length (L) of the curtain at its longest point, that is, from the center of the arch to the desired length.

7. Multiply the length of the cut by the required width number to obtain the amount of fabric for the curtains and lining.

13. Cut along the top arc

By the way, to install such models, standard curtain rods are most often used, which will cost the buyer much less than their innovative competitors.

Using this principle, you can hang both plain curtains and models with a variety of patterns. It may not be so much flowers and abstraction, but rather vertical stripes, which will also make the room more spacious.

The photo shows options for short curtains and soft lambrequins for the arch.

Which fabrics to choose?

Remember that kitchen curtains of this model should drape well (you probably noted this feature in various photos), so they are made of light, mostly translucent fabrics that can easily be assembled into beautiful patterns. These could be, for example:

  • tulle;
  • chiffon;
  • organza;
  • veil.

They are often made from two types of textiles: main and finishing. Therefore, it is important to ensure that both selected fabrics are in harmony with each other, as well as with the surrounding environment, in color and texture.

Along the arched bend

Curtains hung on a curved cornice along the curve of the window opening will also look beautiful. You can add elegance to such windows with the help of a beautiful lambrequin.

Classic porters on arched windows always look rich, but the highlight of such an unusual ensemble is the stylish tacking, which harmonizes perfectly with any form of drapery. These can be voluminous rings and loops, and other fashionable accessories that add luxury to the living space and turn an ordinary room into royal chambers. In addition, you can experiment with different forms of drapery, and the design of the clamps is by far the most unexpected.

The photo shows models of Austrian curtains for arched windows.

Since constantly opening and closing curtains is not always convenient, you can rely on Austrian, roller, English and Roman models, which are distinguished by their mobility and are more convenient for everyday use.

If it is necessary to slightly lengthen the height of the opening, the cornice is mounted above the arch. Moreover, the attachment point can be arbitrary, which depends on the desire of the housewife, how much she would like to lengthen the window.

This is the most popular method of improving the opening. By installing the cornice at a level lower than the bend of the arch in the photo, you will simplify the task of decorating the window opening. In addition, the upper open part of the window will fill the room with more light than the part that is covered with a curtain.

Semicircular windows: style direction

Semicircular window openings today are an innovation in the architecture of houses and attract the attention of others, but such frames arose many centuries ago and were considered an item of luxury and high status for the owners of the premises. Walls with semicircular windows look stylish, noble and simply attractive. It is worth noting that if the bay window is decorated with semicircular windows, then such decor will 100% attract the attention of others.

Such window frames are especially common in buildings of such styles as

:

  • Romanism;
  • Russian tower;
  • Gothic;
  • Classicism;
  • Morocco;
  • Arab;
  • Modern;
  • Postmodernism.

Unfortunately, in especially standard-type apartments there are not many options for where semicircular arched windows can be installed. Their placement locations were thought out during the design of the structure, and therefore it is only possible to replace the usual square frames with more modern and stylish ones.

Citizens prefer to experiment and install arched windows

:

  • To the balcony;
  • To the loggia;
  • For bathrooms;
  • Kind of fake;
  • On the partition between the room and the balcony.

The difference between arched windows and standard ones lies in the way the design is carried out, as well as in the upper contour, which is not flat, but semicircular or oval. The design of the window directly depends on the designer of the model and the consumer. They are made from: wood, plastic.

Thanks to modern technologies, it is possible to produce rounded windows of various radii, which allows you to choose original designs.

Window shapes can be: completely round or in the form of a porthole, in the form of a horseshoe, in the form of a half circle, asymmetrical type, in which there is a different radius of curvature, with a quarter circle. In a rectangular frame, completely different sides can be rounded, for example: side, top, part of the top, bottom. Such arched structures significantly expand the limit of possibilities regarding the design of premises, and thanks to the large assortment, you can make a choice towards the most original products in shape. Using rounded frames, you can create unusual architectural designs.

Lower than the level of the arch bend

Many housewives prefer to sew a curtain for an arched opening with their own hands. To start sewing, take measurements first.

To purchase the required amount of fabric, measure the distance from the top point of the arch to the bottom level where the product should end. Be sure to add 15-20 cm to the resulting figure for allowances. The result will be a number equal to the length of the desired fabric. Next, measure the width of the opening and, unforgettable, add 4 cm on each side for allowances to the resulting figure.

Despite their unusual appearance, arched windows are quite unpretentious in terms of design. Any of the following types of curtains are suitable for decorating oval openings:

Linen . This material is widely used due to its qualities: lightness, strength, durability, as well as complete hypoallergenicity. It was flax that was used during the USSR as the most affordable and high-quality material for making arched curtains.

Curtain arch - what is it?

An arched curtain is a woven fabric cut in the shape of a window arch. It is precisely due to the fact that the canvas completely repeats the structure of the window opening that the amount of light that is necessary enters the kitchen. It also emphasizes the design features of the room.

This type of curtain became most popular during the Soviet Union. Then one could find a similar decoration in almost every kitchen, regardless of the status of the family. The only thing that distinguished them was the cost of the manufacturing material.

Currently, the fashion for such an accessory has returned and is rapidly gaining momentum. Nowadays you don’t even have to buy a finished product. You can do it yourself, spending a minimum of financial and time costs.

But first you need to understand whether high-quality curtains are really needed in the kitchen.

Arched curtains for the kitchen: choice of material

Tulle. If the moment of light is not important for the inhabitants of the kitchen, then tulle can also be an excellent option for making curtains for the kitchen. After all, it is not only very light, durable and reliable, but also easy to cut, which also plays a very important role when making curtains with your own hands for the kitchen.

To get the cut right, you don’t need to be a professional, you just need to follow the following algorithm:

As you can see, the pattern does not take much effort. Once the cut is ready, all that remains is to sew the curtain arch for the kitchen.

Important! To prevent the curtains from looking too scanty, it is necessary to add a few centimeters to the width measurements obtained (about 5-10, depending on the width of the opening). This will make the curtains look lush and free.

If you have a classic interior, then everything will be more or less clear with the window. Rich drapery, emphasizing its shape, arched cornices, or, in extreme cases, curtains on a straight cornice high under the ceiling or at the level of the corner of the arch. Then the window will be in complete harmony with the overall style of the room.

Italian curtains

on an arched cornice perfectly emphasize the shape of the window and are suitable, first of all, for the Baroque style in which they arose. Such curtains consist of two curtains connected in the middle and secured on both sides with cords or tiebacks. The shape of Italian curtains is fixed, so to create privacy you will have to supplement them with translucent curtains - Roman ones, with hooks.

Location of cornices

With arched cornices everything is standard: rod - on the wall, profile - in the arch. There are variations with straight lines.

Pros and cons of using arch curtains

Like any other decorative element, kitchen curtains have their advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:

Availability . The main advantage of curtain arches is their accessibility. After all, absolutely every housewife is capable of sewing these for her home. At the same time, it is not necessary to follow other people’s patterns, because you can create your own arches according to individual sizes.

Ease of execution . To make such curtains yourself, you don’t have to be a professional tailor. All you need is basic cutting skills and working with a sewing machine. If you don’t have any, you can always master them in a matter of days using courses that are publicly available.

Practicality . Arch curtains are not only a decorative detail, but also a rather important element in regulating the amount of light entering the kitchen. In such cases, high-quality kitchen curtains will become the most indispensable element in the kitchen.

Durability . The curtain in the kitchen is essentially the most durable decorative element. After all, it is least exposed to external environmental factors.

Easy to operate and clean . Unlike blinds, arched curtains are very easy to care for and keep clean. To do this, it is necessary to wash and iron once every certain period of time. Then the curtains can be returned to their place and forgotten about them for a long time.

Flaws:

Curtains in the shape of an arch are not able to fully hide the heating elements of the room . In most apartments, heating elements are located directly under the window in the kitchen. Thus, this may cause some difficulties in terms of inadequate hiding of batteries and pipes, burning of material, and is also not always combined with the overall design of the kitchen interior. Therefore, they will have to come up with additional hiding elements.

Patterning a curtain can take a long time . Despite the fact that sewing is not a major task for most housewives, many have problems with correct arch measurements. Therefore, it is necessary to use the help of a man or take very careful measurements several times.

How to sew arched curtains.

Before you start decorating the window, you need to imagine how the fabric chosen for the curtain will fit into the overall design of the room.

The drawing for each window will be individual. In order to complete it, measure the width of the window and divide it into three equal parts. From point A with a radius equal to 1/3 of the window width, draw a line EG. Then the fabric is folded in half as shown in the drawing, where the middle of the fabric is marked by line AB, and the free ends of the curtain are marked by CD.

After this, cut out the pattern along the EG line. The resulting semicircular cutout is aligned in a straight line, hemmed along the edge and loops are sewn to it.

You can use any fabric for making curtains: tulle, linen, artificial silk, satin, fabrics with a beautiful bright pattern.

In this case, sewn curtains for arched windows with your own hands, complemented by eyelets and loops, look impressive. Curtains made from multi-colored scraps with a vertical pattern will look very beautiful against the background of an arched window.

Despite their unusual appearance, arched windows are quite unpretentious in terms of design. Any of the following types of curtains are suitable for decorating oval openings:

Rules for choosing color and design

Before you sew curtain arches with your own hands, you need to choose the tone of the materials - the main and additional ones. As noted earlier, it is imperative to take into account that the arch should be a light curtain, made of soft, well-draped fabrics. How to choose a color and design that suits the interior?

To decorate your kitchen according to all the rules of harmony and style, you need to keep in mind some rules for window decoration.

  • If your kitchen has low ceilings, then choose curtains with a vertical pattern or stripes;
  • The color of window textiles can match the color of kitchen textiles, for example, tablecloths, towels, seat upholstery;

  • Also, when choosing a color, you can focus on the color of the decoration or furniture, as shown in the following photo;

  • For a dark kitchen located on the north side, warm shades are suitable - yellow, orange, beige, cream;

  • Decorating a kitchen in a rustic style requires the presence of floral patterns, floral motifs, traditional checks, polka dots and pastoral patterns on the curtain fabric;

Advice. Don't know which color to choose? Choose a universal and win-win option - white or beige.

Visual extension of the window

Most often, arched windows are large in size. Therefore, closing and opening curtains on them is not easy. Therefore, in those rooms and kitchens where curtains often need to be moved, it is recommended to use roller, Austrian, and Roman models. Today, such curtains are often equipped with a control panel, which greatly simplifies the operation process.

This is the most popular method of improving the opening. By installing the cornice at a level lower than the bend of the arch in the photo, you will simplify the task of decorating the window opening. In addition, the upper open part of the window will fill the room with more light than the part that is covered with a curtain.

If you need to use curtains not only as decoration, and you want working curtains that can be moved at night, you should forget about arched cornices.

Roman, Austrian and French lifting curtains are also quite often used to decorate arched windows.

Fastening

If your curtain is already ready, but you don’t know how to attach it to the kitchen window, read some tips:

  • Even a regular cornice will do. The arch curtain itself is quite light, so you can safely attach it even to a thin cornice. And you can place it not only above the window itself, but even on the ceiling.
  • If you have sewn hanging loops to your curtain, then a tube cornice is suitable for you. A rail curtain rod with hooks is suitable if there is braid on the curtain.
  • Another option could be a window mount. Here you need a cornice that can be attached to the window sash or frame, and a curtain can be hung on it using textile Velcro.

Advice! If you often wash your kitchen curtains, then it is best to choose the latter mounting option. So, you can always remove the curtains without any problems and then fasten them back.

Making curtain patterns

1. Using a spirit level, draw a horizontal line directly under the arch. If there is a window frame at the base of the arch, then use it.

2. Measure the distance from this line to the desired length of the finished curtain and write down this number (side length)

3. Measure the distance from the horizontal line to the outer part of the arch every 2.5 cm

4. Transfer these measurements onto a sheet of paper at 5 cm intervals. As a result, we will get a pattern of the same height, but twice as wide as the window.

5. Add 2.5 cm to each measurement for the top seam allowance and join the new marks to create an arch.

6. Fold the pattern in half widthwise and cut along the fold. Each half will be used to make one curtain.
