How to hang a curtain in the bathroom, types of curtain rods, curtains and fixtures

The choice and, accordingly, installation of a curtain in the bathroom largely depends on its intended purpose. Although its main purpose is to protect the floor from moisture and water, it often pursues other goals that are no less important for the owners of the apartment. For example, if there are small children, preference is given to stronger bars and curtains; in cases with luxurious bathroom designs, the curtain is more necessary as an element of the interior, and it can be made from completely different materials and looks completely different.

Before choosing and hanging a curtain in the bathroom, you need to decide on the choice of a suitable curtain rod.

Why do you need a bathroom curtain ↑

This piece of furniture performs several functions at once:

  • prevents splashes of water on the floor and furnishings;
  • zones the space, clearly separating the place where water procedures are taken;
  • helps create a pleasant microclimate while taking a shower;
  • is an integral part of the decor.

The latter quality is less often remembered. The solution of practical problems comes to the fore, which is quite justified from an operational point of view. A comfortable curtain fits harmoniously into the overall design concept and can act as a buffer between the ceiling, walls, and floor. It all depends on the idea of the project.

Shower curtain - simple, elegant

The fastening of the curtain is important - safety depends on the reliability of the rod's installation. During water procedures, the free edge of the curtain is lowered from the side of the inner side. This is done to prevent water spillage. Then the canvas experiences increased load, and additional resistance is created by water flows beating on the surface. These factors must be taken into account when choosing a fastening method.

The curtain highlights the bath or shower area well

Shape selection

The functionality of the curtain mount depends on how well the design fits into the shape of the bathtub or shower. Brackets can be straight, angular, or non-standard. Non-standard (curvilinear) models are made according to the author's sketch to suit the design of the room.

Standard brackets can be straight, semicircular (arc), round, etc. Straight shapes are suitable for typical bathrooms. Arc cornices are used for rooms with round shapes. The spacious apartments with bathtubs in the center use original round rods. Flexible frames have also been developed that can be given the necessary shapes.

Straight

Straight brackets are the most common due to their simplicity of design and many types of fastenings. Cornices can be of fixed or variable length. Sliding brackets can be adjusted to the size needed in the room.

The advantages of straight models are versatility, elegant appearance. Used in standard bathrooms.

Angular or arc

When choosing corner and arc structures, you need to take into account the parameters of the room - it must be spacious enough. Experts advise paying attention to the shape of the shower tray, the design of the room, and the material of the curtains. These criteria will allow you to determine whether a semicircular arch or an L-shaped crossbar is required.

The corner structure is suitable for bathtubs in niches. The design allows the curtain to be folded to the side. Due to this, the room will be visually more spacious. Corner bars are advantageous for shower cabins and bathtub trays near the wall.

Structures consist of 1 or several corners. The degree and shape of the elements may vary depending on the purpose. If necessary, rounded cornices are used for L-shaped bathtubs. The arc crossbar has a rounding radius resembling a semicircle.

Non-standard

Non-standard models of rods are developed to suit the atypical shape of the bathtub. Products can be wavy, arched, asymmetrical, trapezoidal, hexagon-shaped.

For the author's project, structures are created from several levels and components. When developing such elements, designers use non-standard compositions. The fastening of the structure is selected taking into account the design of the plumbing and accessories of the room in which it is located.

How to secure a curtain rod ↑

You can purchase two types of holders in hardware stores:

  • “spacer” – the cornice is held by an internal spring in a telescopic tube;
  • rod with special fastenings.

Cornice “spacer”.

Installation of the first type is simple. Structurally, the rod is a telescopic tube with a spring inside.

Installation is done as follows:

  • remove the protective caps along the edges of the rod;
  • extend the telescopic tube until both ends of the cornice rest against opposite walls;
  • determine the height;
  • put on caps;
  • string rings, thread the curtain through the eyelets;
  • fix the bar at the desired height;
  • check the level.

If an error occurs when increasing the length, the problem is simply solved: remove part of the tube with the spring to the end, insert a larger diameter pipe from the opposite side.

Installing the rod on the spacer will not take much time

Flaws

Sliding curtain rods have several not-so-pleasant features. The first of them is not too high fastening strength. With intensive use, the bar may gradually move down or sideways. Eventually, this results in the bar simply falling off and having to be reinstalled.

In addition, the movement of the rings on which the curtain itself is supported will encounter an obstacle in its path in the form of a junction of the tubes. The rings can get stuck and create an unpleasant noise when the curtains are opened. However, there are restrictions on the weight of curtains.

How to fix the cornice on the brackets ↑

The method described above is suitable for a standard situation when, according to the conditions of the problem, an ordinary bath is given. But a curtain is also necessary for a corner bath; it is used to separate the shower area.

When there is no tray, the drain is located on the floor or low above its level - a small “pedestal”, the curtain performs a double function - it replaces the door, and acts as part of the overall decor. It is enough to move it to one edge or move it apart if it consists of two parts, the space will visually increase.

They always try to fit the curtain into the existing interior or develop a project taking this element into account

With this layout, a semicircular cornice is used, which cannot be secured with spacers. Its installation is carried out as follows:

  • determine the height - try on the curtain so as not to make a mistake;
  • display a horizontal level to prevent distortions;
  • the wall is drilled using a concrete drill of the required diameter;
  • drive in a dowel;
  • treat the gaps with putty and allow to dry;
  • install fasteners;
  • hang a cornice or first string a curtain if the model has grommets.

To harmonize the interior, select cornices, rings, clothespins or eyelets of the same color - white enamel, stylized as silver, bronze. This way the corner will look like a single whole.

Selecting a shower area is an effective interior solution

Procedure

Step 1. Mark the fastening locations. To do this, place the curtain rod on the bathtub/pallet so that the ends of the curtain rod rest against the wall (in this position it should be attached to the walls when we raise it to the desired height). The points on the wall corresponding to the centers of the pipe in the places of contact with the wall are raised vertically up by 160 cm (the standard height of the curtain is 180 cm, the curtain should fall into the bath by 20 cm - this is quite enough for comfortable operation of the rod; if you have a curtain 200 cm high , then the cornice can be installed at a height of 170-180 cm from the side of the bathtub). Having measured the required height, set the point of the center of fastening and then Step 2. If you attach the rod to an asymmetrical bathtub and find that the contours do not match, first of all turn the rod over (so that the fastenings have been swapped) and check again. Surprisingly, this very moment confuses many clients.

Note: For a pallet, the installation height is also determined by ease of use - the curtain should be inside the pallet (if the side is high) or not reaching the pallet if the side is low or completely absent.

Step 2. Mark holes for screws. To perform this step on the Great model, you need to separate the static and rotating parts of the bracket. To do this, unscrew the vertical screw connecting the two parts. At this step we work only with the static part (which will later be screwed to the wall).

Attach the mount to the wall so that its center coincides with the previously placed point and mark two holes for drilling with a pencil. Mark the second fastener in the same way (for Optima and Classic models - 3 holes per fastener).

Important! The mounts on the Great model are located vertically! NOT HORIZONTAL! Both screws at the mount (connecting and fixing) point upward. Important! The mounts on the Classic and Optima models have a fixing screw. The fasteners must be positioned on the wall so that this screw is oriented straight up! Not to the side, not to the bottom, not at an angle, but strictly UP! This is the only way the pipe will remain horizontal.

The main cause of sagging in most curtain rods is incorrectly oriented brackets! They need to be installed exactly as shown in the figure above!

Step 3: Drill holes for screws. Never drill into tiles with regular drills! The tiles may crack! Special pens are sold in stores for drilling tiles. First, the tiles are drilled with feathers, then the holes are deepened with a regular drill. The kit with the cornice (Optima and Great) includes dowels with a diameter of 8 mm (for Classic - 6 mm). Drills and feathers need the appropriate diameter.

Step 4. Screw the mountings securely to the wall. Insert dowels into the drilled holes, attach the mount to the wall and screw the mount securely. The dowels and screws that come with the rod are designed for concrete walls. If in your case the fastening is not carried out in concrete (foam concrete, wood, drywall, etc.), then you need to purchase dowels specifically for your wall material at any hardware store. Otherwise, the cornice will not be fastened securely!

Step 5. Insert the rod into the mounts and secure it. Place the rotating parts of the fasteners on the cornice and tighten the fixing screw until it stops (only until it stops! Do not overtighten, because with too much force, the thread of the screw can be cut off).

Then insert the cornice into the fastenings fixed to the wall and connect the rotating and static parts of the fastenings with a vertical screw (also do not overtighten).

Important! For the Optima model, you first need to put decorative reflectors on the pipe, then simply insert the ends of the cornice into the fasteners and secure them with screws. Next, push in the decorative caps to cover the fasteners.

Important! For model > (they fit tightly onto the pipe), then fix the pipe in the mounts with a screw and finally put the reflector on the silicone seal and push it all together to the wall to close the mount.

Ceiling cornice and its installation ↑

Recently, ceiling installation has been used - convenient, ergonomic, the curtain covers the space from ceiling to floor. Installation of such a cornice is simple. We insert the screws from the fittings kit into the special sockets and attach the cornice directly to the ceiling. This design is good for tall or built-in shower heads, or if you don't want to drill into the tile.

The ceiling cornice will cover the entire shower space right up to the ceiling.

Design Features

Curtain fasteners of this type consist of two metal or plastic tubes inserted into one another. At the ends of the tubes there are support platforms with rubber soles that securely hold the structure and prevent it from slipping. A spring mechanism is installed inside the structure, which allows you to fix the rod with two vertical planes.

The main feature of such solutions will be the impossibility of installation in the absence of two surfaces between which the cornice is fixed. The spacer locking mechanism does not provide any other installation options. Accordingly, such rods can be exclusively straight.

What materials are used for shower curtains ↑

Water resistance is a key criterion when choosing curtains. Fortunately, stuffy polyethylene or oilcloth products, ineffective and inconvenient to use, have sunk into oblivion. Today in the production of curtains they use:

  • PVC (budget option);
  • polyester (more expensive, but better quality);
  • vinyl.
  • fabric curtains with impregnation.

Polyester is considered the optimal material. A variety of prints look great on it, it is pleasant to the touch, but requires careful care. Dried streaks of water spoil the visual impression when getting acquainted with the original solution.

Kind with healthy. Ideas for prints - very different

You can buy a finished product - the market is flooded with canvases with various images, interesting plot drawings, and abstractions. If we are talking about a stylish room, then printing is done on polyester. And then a simple curtain will become an exclusive item.

Fabrics with moisture-resistant impregnation are used for expensive interiors. These are classic, Venetian or rich oriental areas for water treatments and hygiene. This curtain can be washed, its wear and tear is not as great as it might seem at first glance.

Gorgeous fabric with a natural print.

Does the quality of a device depend on the material?

What influences the material from which the cornice is made? First of all, on its operational characteristics and service life. A metal tube will “live” much longer than a plastic one, since metal is wear-resistant and resistant to mechanical damage. This is important because the hooks on which the curtain is hung constantly move along the rod and scratch it.

The only advantage of a plastic product is its low cost, so it can be easily replaced with another made of a similar material.

To make a plastic model last longer, when purchasing, pay attention to its strength, which directly depends on the diameter, wall thickness of the tube and elasticity (fragile material will deteriorate faster)

Metal models vary, but most are made from polished stainless steel, painted thin-walled steel or aluminum. The latter are good if there is a need to change the shape of the bar - aluminum bends easily.

The processed material does not rust, does not become moldy and lasts a long time. Sometimes a design project requires all accessories to be consistent, and then the curtain rod is custom-made (from nickel-plated, brass or copper tubing) to match the plumbing details and other equipment.

Tubular metal curtain rods can last for decades, but do not forget about their weak point - the brackets, which are the main fasteners to the wall, and regularly check their stability

Types of cornices in the bathroom: photo ideas ↑

The variety of fastenings does not end with the options - telescopic with brackets. There are many modifications, since the design can be the most unexpected.

For example, a ring cornice looks stylish and neatly zones the shower area.
