Door installation
Modern manufacturers and consultants in stores offer consumers the installation of a door rebate. But many buyers do not know what this part is used for and how to install it correctly. To understand installation and selection, it is important to understand what a door rebate is. In fact, the false element increases the functional and aesthetic properties of the structure and provides reliable protection from noise and drafts. It can be purchased separately or together with the canvas.

Features and description of the vestibule
Not every installer and user understands why a door part is installed in interior door structures, so it is necessary to clarify a number of important points. The vestibule itself is installed on the opposite side of the hinges; it sticks out a little - exactly as much as there is a gap.
A door with a rebate has a slight protrusion, which, when locked, is in close contact with the frame. The size of the vestibule is chosen for a reason, but according to its shape, and is exactly one-fourth of the thickness of the canvas, which is why ordinary people often call this part a quarter.
Door sill device
It should be noted that this part looks like an artificial strip made from the same raw materials as the door. Typically, doors in rooms are equipped with doorways in openings with double doors. Among consumers, the common name for such devices is “rebated doors.”
It appeared due to the intricacies of manufacturing, since to create a rebate in the door, a rebate edging is cut out using a milling cutter. As a result, the recessed element becomes a continuation of the door leaf, in contact with the contours of the frame.
Threshold types
According to GOST R 57327 standards, thresholds are of the following categories:
- Drop-down overhead. The overlay moves along the canvas. The height of the position depends on the condition of the sash;
- Retractable mortise. Products that seal the gap are located in a cutout inside the floor or sash. They are fixed from the lower end of the canvas;
- Attached. They are made in the form of an elevation without fixation with bolts. The barriers can be removed at any time during operation.
Types of porch
To install a plank with your own hands, you will need special adhesives, liquid nails and ordinary fasteners. Separately, the porch can be made in a furniture company. If the quarter is installed on a partition with two sashes, then it must extend beyond the sashes so that the gap closes tightly. The strip attached to the back of the door structure acts as a box, eliminating the gaps between the door leaves.
There are several types of vestibules by level:
- with one;
- with two;
- with three levels.
Attention! The design can be conventional or equipped with insulating materials that increase insulating capabilities. It will be more difficult to install such doors without specialists, especially in the absence of knowledge and experience.

Externally, the doors look massive, so if the room is small, then it is better to give preference to other models of interior structures.
Advantages and disadvantages of products
The need to install a quarter remains a big question. The cost of the door increases due to this component. Therefore, you need to figure out whether such costs will be offset by increased functionality.
Appearance of rebated doors
So, let’s look at the main advantages of using a door strip:
- Increased insulation from noise and sounds. Since the gaps are reduced as much as possible and the density of the door cover increases, this becomes a serious barrier to the penetration of third-party sounds. Thanks to excellent tightness, the comfort of use improves, especially if the room is located in an area with increased noise.
- Thermal insulation. By creating a high degree of tightness, comprehensive protection is guaranteed against cold entering from outside and heat leaving the room. With the help of a quarter, you can get rid of drafts and maintain comfortable temperature conditions in the room. This eliminates the need to insulate the door.
- Small errors during installation of the door structure can cause gaps or deviations to appear between the door and the frame. These aspects together worsen the aesthetic performance of the door. With the help of a strip, these defects are successfully hidden.
Despite such tangible advantages, door shutters also have certain disadvantages, the essence of which should be taken into account before installation. First of all, this concerns the budget, since doors with a strip are more expensive compared to the same models without a quarter panel. In addition, the presence of this component introduces a number of restrictions on the selection of suitable loops.

Important information! A narthex is a part that increases the functionality of interior or entrance door devices. This is supposed to provide increased protection from noise and cold and impart aesthetic properties. The design of such products is more complex, and installation requires experience and knowledge.
Why do you need a seal?
The seal is essentially a tape that is glued along the entire perimeter of the box. Everyone noticed her when entering the house. As a rule, the seal in private houses is installed on street entrance systems or on structures leading from the cold corridor further into the room. In high-rise buildings it is installed on the doors separating the apartment from the landing.
This fittings performs several functions at once:
- The seal for the metal entrance door protects the apartment from the penetration of air from the entrance into it, including providing isolation from extraneous, unpleasant odors (garbage chute, cigarette smoke), dust, and excess moisture.
- Guarantees sound insulation. Moreover, it protects both the apartment from the penetration of sounds into it and reduces the audibility of what is happening in the room itself.
- Retains heat and prevents cold air from entering the house. In the summer, on the contrary, it prevents hot air from getting inside. This fitting also prevents drafts.
- The seal is responsible for the smooth and silent operation of a metal door. There will be no loud clapping with him.
In addition to these tasks, the seal for iron doors partly serves as protection in case of fire: it prevents smoke from leaking into the room. But the fittings will do this only if the tape fits tightly to the metal door without gaps, and its material and workmanship are of high quality.
If you buy a seal that is too thick, it will be difficult to close the door leaf itself and the locks; considerable effort will be required, which will lead to wear of all door hardware. If you choose a tape that is too thin, it will not be able to perform its insulation functions.
How to choose interior doors with a rebate?
When choosing such a product for a residential or commercial space, it is important to pay attention to some features:
- Use of high-quality sealant. If insulating material is installed along the edges of the box, it should not contribute to the appearance of extraneous noise. Normally, a sticking sound appears, which is caused by a slight accumulation of dust inside. This problem can be solved by cleaning the surface of the insulation or using degreasers. If the doors squeak too loudly, then it is better not to install a porch on them.
- Absence of errors, defects and irregularities on the bar. This structural element must have an ideal design - neither bevels, nor curvature, nor other irregularities are acceptable. Otherwise, all the advantages of the vestibule will be neutralized.
Features of fittings
An additional feature of designs with a rebate is that they are not compatible with all hinges. The design of special hinges differs from conventional doors, since in this case the axis moves in the direction of the bar. If you understand how these fittings work, you can always make the right choice.
Accessories
Among the available elements are:
- card loops like corners - fasteners that bend at right angles; when installed, one part is fixed at the edge of the hole, and the second is attached directly to the canvas;
- screw-in - their design contains hinged components on which pins are attached; they are attached to the canvas along an oblique path;
- hidden - a more complex design with hinges hidden under a metal body; there is also a screw that connects the moving parts.
The insertion of loops must be done as carefully as possible; a router is used for this. Hidden hinges are sometimes equipped with a closer, which also facilitates the operation of the structure.
Are rebated doors accessible to everyone?
Obviously, doors equipped with rebate devices have a higher cost, since the manufacture of the rebate involves the use of more manufacturing processes. Let's find out if it's worth spending money on? Nobody will answer definitely. In this regard, you can build on the interior design and the functions that the user wants to get from the door.

Doors with a rebate are considered to be traditional classics, but designs without a bar look more modern and stylish. That is why in rooms decorated in a classical style, structures without a vestibule will look ridiculous. But traditional boring doors look even more ridiculous in modern bold interiors.
It is important to note that only a general understanding has been expressed here and is not critical. There is another principle of choice: you should not always start from stereotypes; there are times when it’s time to destroy them.
What is the specificity of the drop-down threshold
Non-stationary fire threshold mechanisms rise after the gate is opened and lower after closing. Among the advantages of the automatic system:
- Compliance with fire safety requirements;
- Saving free space;
- Acoustic insulation of the room;
- The thresholds do not block the path for motor vehicles and large special equipment. They can be installed at warehouse and production facilities;
- Do not create obstacles during the evacuation of people from the building.
Rules for combining doors with rooms
Before choosing the right slat doors for your home or office space, it is important to determine which models are suitable for which type of premises.
Main parameters when choosing:
- door material (wood, solid wood, plastic, MDF);
- features of the canvas (are there glass inserts, partitions, patterns and other decorative elements);
- functions of the fittings used.
Try to take into account a few simple rules. For example, if the door is made of solid wood, then such a door looks rough in appearance and weighs down the interior. If there are glass inserts, they visually lighten the canvas; such products will suit most modern styles.
An equally important aspect is the size of the rooms in which it is planned to install rebated doors. For small spaces, for example, children's rooms or bedrooms, home offices, etc., it is best to give preference to single-leaf structures. If we are talking about a living room or a spacious hall, then it is better to choose a double door - here it will look appropriate.
Finishing of steel sills
Like the door frame, the threshold is treated with an anti-corrosion compound and then painted. Usually powder paint is used, but PVC film or nitro enamel can be used. Unfortunately, such a coating wears out over time and becomes covered with small scratches: the front door takes on an unpresentable appearance.
An excellent solution to the problem is linings made of stainless steel with a polished or matte surface. Products can be decorated with an etched or embossed pattern, making them look harmonious in any interior. In apartments and private houses where traffic is low, metal thresholds are covered with wooden or plastic panels covered with colored PVC film to preserve the aesthetics of the door design. Another common option is aluminum elements, which have a beautiful steel shine and high wear resistance.
The linings are attached to screws in a hidden or open way, so they can be easily installed on ready-made doors on their own. The only caveat is the accuracy of the dimensions, otherwise the element may not fit in height or width. It is better to purchase an overlay made according to individual parameters, so as not to waste time adjusting it to a specific steel block.
Door installation
The installation of the box part is no different from the installation of standard doors, only in this case special hinges will be mounted in the rack. It is important that their threads fit completely into the body of the box. Then you can adjust everything.
After this, you need to align the hinges with the door and check whether the structure opens and closes correctly. Due to the versatility of the hinges, it becomes possible to adjust the distance until the vestibule does not collide with the frame.
Installing a door sill
If you encounter any difficulties with self-installation, it is recommended to contact professionals, since rebated doors have a complex structure. In this case, special fittings are used, which require certain skills for proper installation.

Eliminating the squeak
Rice. 1 If the iron entrance door begins to creak, there are two options: debris has gotten into the lubricant or the door leaf is rubbing against the frame. It is not easy to immediately determine what exactly causes the squeak. Therefore, let's start with what is easier to eliminate:
Cleaning and Lubrication
Step 1.
Remove the door from its hinges (Fig. 1) and remove old grease and dirt.
Step 2.
If the hinges are rusty and do not give in, apply a rust remover, wait the specified time and repeat Step 1. Only in this case, clean the hinges more thoroughly (down to metal).
Step 3.
Apply new oil to the pin and ring.
Step 4.
Return the door to its place and open/close for 1-2 minutes so that the oil is completely distributed.
Important!
If the mechanism is hidden and one-piece, simply clean it of dust and lubricate all rotating parts using a syringe or oil can (Fig. 2). If the hinges have a ball, then unscrew the adjusting screw and treat the cavity from the screw with machine oil (Fig. 3).

What should I use for lubrication?
If the front door faces the street, you need a heat-resistant substance (litol, grease); if it goes into the entrance, something simpler will do (machine lubricants and oils, WD40 grease).
Adjustment
If the previous steps helped, great! If not or not at all, move on. Each type of loop requires a different approach. They come in 3 types:
- Regular (with washers).Step 1.
Check the door frame for scuffs.Step 2.
Determine the loop closest to the fray (we will adjust it).
Step 3.
Select a new washer of suitable thickness and replace the old one.
Step 4.
(Optional) Drill a through hole in the hinge from the top so that you can then pour lubricant into it without unnecessary preludes.
- Hidden loops.
Step 1.Loosen the outer screws on the hinges near the abrasion area. Do this manually using a 4mm hex key.
Step 2.
Adjustable using the central screw. If it is not there, then we try to move the door in the right direction.
Step 3.
Open/close. If it doesn’t help, repeat the procedure again.
- Hinges with bearings or ball.Step 1.
We loosen the tilting screw, followed by the adjusting screw (the door becomes movable).Step 2.
