The window on a plastic window does not open, how to fix it

Functions of a modern window

To ventilate and ensure normal air exchange, it is no longer necessary to open the entire window; it is enough to switch it to one of the available plastic window modes.

To ventilate the room, just turn the handle up and the sash will tilt to the desired position.

When the window handle is turned 45 degrees, the micro-ventilation mode is set

Micro-ventilation becomes available by turning the control handle at an angle of 45 degrees from the vertical. This creates a gap of several millimeters, which is enough for fresh air to enter the room. .

Additionally, ventilation can be provided even without unlocking the sash, but for this it is necessary to make changes to the design itself and install an additional ventilation valve.

These functions, as well as full opening and closing, are available thanks to a mechanism that is adjusted when installing the window package.

Solving problems with the ventilation mode of plastic windows

Korovin Sergey Dmitrievich
Master of Architecture, graduated from Samara State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering. 11 years of experience in design and construction.

Unlike old wooden frames, modern plastic windows are more functional. It is not necessary to open them completely to allow fresh air to enter the room; it is enough to open the door into the room or set the micro-ventilation mode. However, a situation often arises when the plastic window does not close from the ventilation mode. What to do in this case and what is the cause of the problem?

Closing problem and its causes

Sometimes a situation may arise when the sash cannot be closed. You shouldn’t immediately think about replacing the window; the reasons may be very simple, and eliminating them will not require a lot of time and money.

You can begin to eliminate the problem with closing after studying the structure of the PVC window

The shutter switches to dual mode when closing the window during wind or draft.

As you can see, in most cases, the sashes on plastic windows do not close for elementary reasons. However, if nothing is done about it, the mechanism will gradually wear out. And the ventilation mode for plastic windows cannot last forever; at some point you will still need to close the sash.

What are the ways to eliminate the problems that have arisen and how to adjust the micro-ventilation of windows?

Modes in metal-plastic windows

Modern plastic windows allow you to provide ventilation in the room in various ways.

To organize natural air exchange and establish effective ventilation, you can now move the sash to one of the micro-ventilation positions.

Setting the ventilation mode for plastic windows is simple: you need to pull the handle up, point it towards yourself, and tilt the sash to the required distance. If you turn the window handle at an angle of 45°, you get a small gap for micro-ventilation. This mode limits the air flow, creating a minimal opening, literally a couple of millimeters. This effect can be achieved by turning the window handle from a vertical position to the side by 45°.

You can arrange ventilation without opening the sash itself if you slightly change the profile design and add a special ventilation valve. Such a mechanism is provided by the window package and can be installed directly during the installation of windows. By opening and closing the valve it is easy to provide additional ventilation.

Elimination of problems with closing sashes

To adjust the window and return to normal settings, you will need a minimum of tools and skills. It is enough to prepare pliers and a hexagon, usually four millimeters. How to adjust the sashes and fix most problems?

Sash misalignment

The distortion of the sash can be removed by simply adjusting the position in the vertical or horizontal plane. To do this, there are corresponding screws on the hinges on the inside of the window, which are covered with decorative (protective) caps.

The distortion of the sash can be eliminated by adjusting the bottom and side screws

The protection is removed and using a hexagon they try to correctly set the position of the window sash. The bottom screw adjusts the position up or down, and the side screw adjusts left and right. In this case, you need to close and open the system several times to check how it locks. Adjust the screws, after which the problem will simply disappear.

Loose fit

A loose fit is corrected depending on the cause of the problem. If the seal is worn out (lost elasticity, there are tears, etc.), then it needs to be replaced.

A worn seal can cause a loose seal.

The same problem can be caused by an incorrectly configured control eccentric (summer mode is set in winter). The mechanism regulates the degree of pressing of the sash and in the summer position the pressing is weaker than in the winter. The set mode is indicated by a marker located on the eccentric.

The degree of pressing of the sash depends on the position of the eccentric

Using a hexagon, plastic windows are set to the winter position (label “outside”). In the warm season, the marker is returned to summer mode.

Handle wedge

To fix this problem, you will need to remove the sash from the frame. This is done by knocking out the pin from the top hinge (after removing the protective cap).

To repair the handle it is necessary to remove the sash

Now you need to insert the “scissors” into the groove where they should be. This process can be done without dismantling the sash, provided that the slopes do not interfere and there is access to the mechanism.

Door in two modes

The violation occurs when the window is switched too abruptly and quickly from the ventilation mode to the closing mode. This problem can be resolved very simply. The sash is pressed against the frame by pressing on the upper corner. The lock is clamped to the frame. The handle is switched to open mode. The door is locked.

Drainage frame

If the drainage frame has come off, then it is returned to its place, having first thoroughly cleaned the entire window frame.

The drainage hole is designed to drain water from the window unit

If the sashes sag due to deformation of the entire window, it is impossible to do without the intervention of specialists. Most likely, a complete window replacement will be required . In this case, the problem arises as a result of movement of the walls or shrinkage of the house (if it was recently built). Replacement is carried out after making sure that such deformations do not recur.

If the window has changed its geometry due to improper installation, then all work to replace it must be carried out by the installation company!

Solution

So, we figured out what the problem is. But the question is different: how to solve it. What to do if a plastic window jams in ventilation mode?

Here's the procedure:

  • First you need to remove the window sash. That is, pull it out of the frame. In order to do this, you need to remove the patch, which is located on the top hinge. Then, pull the special pin down and then pull it out.
  • After these manipulations, the sash should be easily removed from the bottom hinge. To do this, you just need to lift it a little.
  • Place the sash so that it is convenient to get to its top.
  • Now start looking for the grooves into which, in fact, the element called “scissors” should fit. Once they are found, you need to put everything in place. Please note that you may need to press a lock or move a handle to achieve your goal.
  • By the way, at this stage you can immediately check the operation of the pen. When the lock is pressed, it should turn freely.
  • When the “scissors” are in the grooves, the sash can be installed in place. The final step is driving the pin with a hammer.

It is important to know! There are cases when the “scissors” can be returned to the grooves without removing the plastic window sash. What is needed for this? Experience, so that the slopes do not interfere, the availability of space at the top of the sash.

Setting up micro ventilation

Micro-ventilation is a built-in function of a modern window, when by turning the handle to the desired position, the sash leaves a gap of a few millimeters for air to enter from the street. But you can also install additional devices to organize normal air exchange.

Adjustment using a comb

The comb is an additional fitting that works as a limiter for the angle of inclination of the sash in ventilation mode. The window can be installed with a slope of 30, 45 or 60 degrees.

How can micro-ventilation be arranged?

The solution to the issue of air access into the room has 3 classic solutions:

  • installation of special fittings;
  • sash opening limiter device (comb);
  • installation of the supply air valve.

All solutions for adjusting micro-ventilation in plastic windows have their pros and cons, but they all solve the main problem - ventilation of air in the room without drafts.

After considering all the details, you can decide on a solution that suits your specific situation.

The plastic window does not open

Windows Prof >> All about windows >> What to do if a plastic window does not open: the handle of the plastic window is jammed

The mechanisms of plastic windows require careful handling. Haste or twisting the handle when the sash is not tightly closed can lead to breakage. You can return the equipment to service yourself, but some cases require the intervention of a specialist. If your plastic window does not open, figure out the reason before starting repairs.

Plastic window jammed

Sometimes you can do minor repairs yourself, but in any case you should approach this carefully. Physical effort, pressure, jerking will only make it worse.

To a large extent, the success of your actions depends on the position in which the breakdown occurred: opening or closing a window or balcony door, tilting the sash for ventilation.

Tools you may need:

Position calibration:

This works with all standard models of plastic and wooden double-glazed windows.

Plastic window handle jammed

The handle can get stuck in any position. The most unpleasant thing is when this happens in the closed position and there is no access to the mechanism. In this case, you should call a specialist or find a video on how to remove a double-glazed window and separate the sash. The strapping mechanism may be damaged.

Equipment that is not working correctly may need to be replaced. Keep in mind that doing things on your own can lead to even bigger troubles.

The handle rotates freely without engaging the mechanism. There are two options here:

The handle is difficult to turn, although the locking mechanism works. It is necessary to lubricate the mechanical elements of the handle.

Failure of the transmission mechanism. You can replace the gearbox yourself only if you have practical skills in working with plastic windows.

The handle is at the “closed” level and does not turn, the sash is not fixed securely enough. To fix the defect:

If the correct position is not established, then most likely the reason is a mismatch between the positions of the moving elements of the fittings. The trunnion should be opposite the risk.

The shift can be removed simply:

As a rule, after such actions the handle rises to a vertical position when the blocker is released.

The handle is locked in the "closed" position with the sash open. Pressing the lock tab will solve the problem.

A photo will help you do everything right.

The window does not open due to sagging or deformation

Difficulty opening due to sagging; movement is accompanied by strong friction and significant physical effort. This defect can be eliminated by adjusting the hinges. You can do it yourself, without the help of a specialist.

The sash touches the bottom of the frame when opening. Sagging and deformation are possible due to violations in the manufacturing and installation technology of window units. Exceeding the permissible weight of the sashes is a defect that cannot be eliminated. The massive glass unit is replaced with a lightweight one. The same applies to fastenings. Incorrectly selected hinges are reinstalled.

Poor movement of the valves may be due to contamination, sand, small stones, or dust. Remove them with a vacuum cleaner, wipe and lubricate the metal parts if necessary. Lubrication is recommended at least once a year.

During repairs, in order to prevent construction debris from getting into the cracks of the fittings, they are sealed with tape, for example, masking tape.

The window does not close or closes with difficulty

One solution may be to clean the profile with a vacuum cleaner if foreign particles in the shutter mechanism are causing friction. If the problem persists, the gearbox will need to be cleaned. It is better to entrust this to a specialist.

Sometimes a sagging upper slot ventilation strip prevents closure. You need to adjust the sash or tighten the screws that support the bar.

When the lock is stuck in the “open” position, there may be several reasons.

In the case where the blocker simply cannot come into contact with the response mechanism, it is removed by unscrewing the screws. Between it and the frame they put something flat, suitable in thickness. It could be a piece of plastic. The fasteners are put in place.

The window does not open for ventilation

The next problem may arise when opening for ventilation mode. If the handle is stuck halfway, there is no need to press it, the profile or pull it back. The hook may come out of the groove, leaving the sash hanging on one hinge.

The cause of the problem is the scissors, which could jump out of the grooves. The situation can be corrected by removing the sash. To do this, remove the strips from the upper hinges, unscrew them and remove the pin. The scissors are returned to their correct state. Having returned the hinges to their place, hammer in the pin and check the operation of the window.

If the slopes do not interfere and the scissors are accessible without dismantling, then the repair will be much easier.

Opening limiter

Methods of micro-ventilation in double-glazed windows

Installing a multi-stage opening locking mechanism is the most budget option, and this is its main advantage. The comb itself is inexpensive, and anyone who knows how to use a screwdriver can install it.

Before installation, mark the locations on the frame for drilling with a pencil. The tongue is usually installed under the handle:

  • remove the decorative trim, unscrew the handle;
  • attach the locking tab;
  • place a handle on top and screw the screws into the same places, put on the decorative trim;
  • Screw the comb mechanism to the window frame.

This method has disadvantages: the likelihood of damage to the window profile and a rapid loss of internal room temperature even with a minimum gap.

The most technologically advanced solution to the problem of air flow is to install a micro-ventilation valve. It is mounted on the upper frame in the center of the sash. You can do this yourself; detailed instructions are included with the mechanism. Manual and automatic valves are available for sale. They differ in price and method of adjustment.

Before installing any type, replace the rubber seal with the one included with the structure. To learn how to install a micro-ventilation valve, watch this video:

When choosing this solution, you will not be able to save money; the cost of the structures is quite high. But by installing the valve, you will receive constant air ventilation, the intensity of which can be adjusted.

At the same time, there is no noise, dust or insects indoors. It is worth noting that ventilation through the valve will occur when the window is closed, which is important for parents of small children and pet owners.

So, the easiest to install and most cost-effective option is to install an opening limiter. The most expensive and most functional is the valve device. The installation of a micro-ventilation system in window fittings would be average both in price and in capabilities.

Plastic windows attract owners of houses and apartments due to their absolute tightness. And, unlike traditional wooden ones, such structures do not allow even the slightest draft to enter the room. Therefore, it is not surprising that condensation forms on the glass; fogging is especially noticeable during cooking or in cold weather, when the difference between the temperature in the room and outside the window is obvious. You can prevent glass from fogging by using a micro-ventilation system. Fresh air will be able to circulate freely throughout the apartment.

Can it jam?

Most often, a situation occurs when, when opening/closing the ventilation mode, the handle “wedges” without turning completely. There are also situations, although much less frequently, when in ventilation mode the handle does not move to the desired position.

If such a problem occurs, it is not recommended to make sudden manipulations with the PVC window; you should not apply force - this can lead to final breakdown of the structure.

This malfunction occurs when the “scissors” - one of the elements of the fittings - jumps out of the grooves. If the window handle is jammed, it is not recommended to make sudden movements. First of all, you just need to close the window.

Why does this happen - reasons

This malfunction may indicate either problems with the sash or a failed frame.

This can be determined without any problems if you open the window completely and lower the handle to the “down” position:
There are several reasons why the window does not open:

Once the source of the fault has been found, you can begin the main repair of the PVC window.

Doesn't close

A situation may also arise when the window jams. If a plastic window is stuck, what to do, especially when it’s frosty outside. The answer is simple, you need to urgently fix the problem. If the window sashes are tilt-and-turn, the lock may have been triggered when you tried to close the window in two positions at the same time. In this case, you should press the locking tab, pressing the sash, and carefully lift the handle up, and then lower it down. If the window has large sashes, then a possible cause of failure may be its subsidence. You can try lifting the sash a little by the bottom edge and try to close it.

Is it possible to fix the problem?

If problems with the window began a long time after the start of operation, in most cases the problem can be solved independently if you have at least basic skills in working with a screwdriver and a hexagon. But there are situations when you cannot do without the help of specialists and high-quality repairs.

It is recommended to call specialists if:

There is no need to try to repair serious damage, this may aggravate the problem.

Step-by-step repair instructions for various problems

Repairing a jammed double-glazed window can be done in various ways, depending on the cause of the malfunction.

Incorrect assembly of fittings

In correctly installed fittings, the trunnions should be located in the center of the groove. It happens that deviations from the norm are minor, invisible at first glance. In this case, you need to hold the lock with your finger and try to turn the handle to different positions. The trunnion that will rest against the edge of the groove needs repair.

To install it in the correct position, it is necessary to carry out certain manipulations :

After finishing work, it is recommended to lubricate the fittings.

The handle is stuck in the upper position

If the handle is stuck, then this malfunction can be corrected quickly and relatively easily, the main thing is to strictly follow the sequence of actions :

If everything is done correctly, the sash needs to be installed in its place, the upper pin is driven in with a hammer.

If the slopes do not interfere, the sash can not be removed from the frame, but the work can be carried out on site. However, you should not do this without having experience in such work.

Simultaneous opening of the leaf in two modes

This is one of the most common reasons for a PVC window jamming when leaving the ventilation mode.

This problem can be solved simply :
After these manipulations, the sash should close without any problems.

Sash misalignment

In this case, it is necessary to adjust the position of the plane - horizontal or vertical. The procedure takes place in the following sequence :

If the window stops wedging, it means the adjustment was made correctly.

Poor frame care

Plastic double-glazed windows require timely maintenance. All components of the structure must be kept clean and lubricated in a timely manner.

If the window is poorly cared for, if the trunnion is dirty, difficulties may arise when switching from ventilation mode. This problem can be solved very simply: just inspect the end part of the sash and remove dirt from all parts of the fittings.

After cleaning, it is recommended to lubricate all moving parts of the fittings with oil.

General principles for adjusting window sashes

The sashes of almost all modern PVC windows can be adjusted in three planes, thanks to which you can achieve the correct position of the sashes in the frame and achieve the optimal degree of pressing of the seals along the entire perimeter of the sash.

The methods for adjusting the sash fittings, the appearance of its individual elements and the tool used for adjustment may vary depending on the manufacturer, but in general the general adjustment scheme looks as shown in the figures below.

Figure 1 - General principles for adjusting PVC windows

Figure 2 - General scheme for adjusting a plastic window

Figure 3 - Various window adjustment options

Now let's look at what needs to be done to fix the problem in each of the above cases.

Possible difficulties and errors

At first glance, it may seem that closing a plastic window from the ventilation mode when the fittings are “jammed” is a simple matter that even a beginner can do.
However, this is not quite true. Even in this case, it is advisable to have at least basic skills in handling a plastic window.

Often, inexperienced owners make a number of mistakes that lead to the final breakdown of the window system. The most common of them is incorrect identification of the malfunction . For example, the “scissors” have fallen out, and they are trying to repair the trunnions, or they are adjusting the misalignment of the sash instead of simply cleaning the fittings.

The plastic window does not open, it is jammed or impossible to close

Plastic windows are one of the main factors that influence the retention of heat in your apartment and help reduce heat leaks, which is very important in winter. But in order to perform their functions efficiently, the windows must be in good condition, including being sealed and closing/opening correctly. Often, violation of the conditions of use and lack of basic care becomes the reason that the windows do not open or, conversely, the sash does not close. The main reason for this is your confidence that you don’t need to take care of PVC structures; you set them up once and forget about them for 10 years. Clean and lubricate fittings that bear a significant load, or check the serviceability of a mechanism that has begun to “limp” but it still works, few people think of it. Let's look at why plastic windows can jam and what to do in these situations.

The main reasons why a plastic window does not open

If the plastic window begins to open with difficulty, or even stops altogether, look for the cause of the malfunction. Surely it is caused by failure of fittings or deformation of the window opening or sash. Main defects:

Each case with a description of the step-by-step procedure for troubleshooting will be described in more detail below.

It is not uncommon for the handle to not turn at all, which makes the plastic window technically impossible to open. If the sash is completely jammed, it does not respond to careful attempts to open it, the handle is static, then only a visit from a service team will help. Understanding the causes of the problem without a lack of experience is problematic.

The second option is that the sash does not come off, but the plastic handle can be turned in any direction without effort. To open such a jammed window from the inside, you need to replace the handle, and if everything is in order with it, then the lock located inside.

The problem can be caused by wear of the fittings or an initial violation of the installation technology. For residents of new buildings, the issue of building shrinkage is relevant. In the latter case, for correct operation of the window, adjustments are made in height, length, width and axis of rotation.

Advantages

By choosing the option of micro-ventilation, you get the following advantages:

  1. The window will not fog up.
  2. Unpleasant odors in the room will disappear.
  3. Heat or unpleasant odors from the street are unlikely to bother you.
  4. A draft will not form.
  5. No high humidity in the room, and, therefore, no fungi and mold, only a healthy atmosphere.
  6. You can leave the windows in this position, even if you go outside.

As for the last point, you don’t have to worry that the room will get too cold or overheated due to the weather outside, or that attackers will take advantage of the current situation, because the gap remains really very narrow.

So we can say with confidence: this option is one of the serious advantages, and it is really worth using. In homes where there are elderly, sick people with respiratory problems, or small children, this opportunity should be used without fail. The same goes for apartments where people smoke.

Take advantage of the additional opportunities that plastic windows provide you, and your life will become even more comfortable. Micro-ventilation will give you comfort and many other benefits.

In the construction world, it has long been considered the norm to install metal-plastic windows with double-glazed windows in buildings. Using such glazing is much more convenient than ordinary wooden windows. Metal-plastic structures are easy and quick to clean, there is no need to paint them, and they last quite a long time.

The undoubted advantage of PVC glazing is its tightness. And this same feature is a bit of a problem. While maintaining the temperature in the room, metal-plastic windows also do not allow moisture to pass through and do not provide an influx of fresh air. The micro-ventilation function will help get rid of this problem.

Why does the window close incorrectly?

The factors that caused this situation are in many ways similar to those described earlier, but have their own specifics. Let's consider the main ones:

Next, we will consider various situations, what to do if the plastic window does not open or does not come off completely, or does not close in various modes. We tried to give you practical recommendations to solve these problems.

Ventilation mode for metal-plastic windows: possible problems and their solutions

Plastic profiles differ from outdated wooden windows in greater functionality. To let in fresh air, there is no longer any need to open the window completely; for mini-ventilation, setting the “window window” mode is quite enough. But what to do if you can’t close the PVC product? Let's look at the main causes of mechanism jamming and ways to eliminate it.

Window jammed: emergency help

A common mistake made by users whose plastic window is jammed and the handle is completely motionless is an attempt to correct the situation by applying force. There is no need to do this; the problem is unlikely to be solved, but the risk of breakdown increases. If the window does not open, be prepared to call a repair team. Although in some situations you can cope on your own.

Basic recommendations for adjusting locking mechanisms:

When installing "Ziegenia" or "MACO"

Remember, the sash must be positioned strictly vertically.

When installing "Roto", "Winkhaus"

Let's consider the procedure for using Roto and Winkhaus locking mechanisms:

It happens that when the sash is open, the handle gets jammed. Pressing it tightly to the top will help solve the problem, after which try turning it horizontally.

Handle jammed in open/closed position

The handle of the PVC window is in the “closed” position, and while the sash is open, or vice versa, in the “open” position, the window is tightly jammed. Sound familiar? To reduce the likelihood of problems with further use of the structure, return the handle to the neutral position and follow our recommendations. Do not put any force on the fittings; they can easily be damaged.

Cause of the problem

The reason for this may be a triggered lock, which is installed to protect the window system from damage. And the one who uses the window should be scolded here - when the sash is open, some of us accidentally turn the handle down.

It will not be possible to solve the problem on your own, so you will have to contact the manufacturer. The problem is caused by a failure of the strapping mechanism.

If the window of a plastic window does not open, then the problem is often hidden in a broken handle.

If the handle does not lock in a certain position, but rotates freely, then there are two reasons:

Survey of our readers

If you follow simple precautions when using plastic windows, they will serve you much longer, and you will have to call a professional much less often.

For this it is important:

  1. Window installation must be carried out by specially trained people, according to the instructions.
  2. You need to buy double-glazed windows only from trusted companies that you trust.
  3. When closing the window, do not apply much pressure to the handle so as not to damage its mechanism.
  4. Do not hang things (clothes, curtains, bedspreads) on the open door.
  5. Once a year, carry out a preventive inspection for damage to the mechanism and lubricate its components.
  6. Try not to cause mechanical damage (scratches, dents, impacts, cracks).
  7. Give the mechanism a rest. When open for a long time, the hinges place a large load on them, so it is not recommended to keep the window “ventilated” for a long time.
  8. Make sure that dust and dirt do not get into the mechanism (especially during repairs) and carry out cleaning in a timely manner.
  9. If the window is closed for a long time (most often in winter), sometimes you need to open it for a second so that the mechanism does not stagnate.

And although it’s quite easy to fix minor damage yourself, remember that if the window is under warranty, it’s better to call a specialist. In this case, you can save your effort and money (repairs are free under warranty) and save your purchase from more trouble if you are not an expert in repair matters.
