What materials can you order windows from?
Metal-plastic windows
Plastic window
Single-chamber PVC window in section
Glazing of loggias with PVC profile windows is the most common and this is natural, since such windows, especially with double glazing, have excellent sound insulation and, despite the large glazing area, retain heat well in the room.
When caring for such windows, almost any household detergents, as well as warm water, can be used.
Sometimes you can hear complaints about wear and tear on seals, but most often this is due to improper care (or complete lack thereof) of them. It is necessary to wipe the seals with a damp cloth and lubricate them with glycerin once a year.
Glazing a loggia, especially when heating appliances are installed there, can cause excessive fogging of the windows. Remember that the quality of the windows has virtually no effect on this phenomenon, on the contrary, since the tightness of the new windows does not allow air convection to occur when there is a noticeable difference in temperature from the side of the loggia and from the street.
To prevent windows from fogging up, the room should be ventilated periodically by opening the window for 5-10 minutes. Wide window sills also contribute to fogging of windows if they block the radiator located under the window, since warm air does not allow condensation to accumulate .
Aluminum windows
The loggia is glazed with aluminum windows
Modifications of aluminum windows
Combination of aluminum and wood
First of all, a glazed loggia provides protection from dust and wind coming from the street, and the effect of sound insulation and heat conservation will depend on the features of the window.
So if you just want to get rid of wind and dust, and you are not interested in insulating a loggia or balcony, then an aluminum window without a double-glazed window, that is, with single glass, is perfect for you.
It would be wrong to remain silent about the ability of an aluminum window to save space, since the sliding method of opening the sashes will not interfere with either you or the furniture located on the loggia, which is very important for rooms with limited space.
What will affect the cost of the window?
The cost of a window will, first of all, be affected by its size, then by the number of lintels in the window frame, that is, the greater the number of double-glazed windows, the more expensive the window will be. It also matters how many fixed windows there will be in the window and how many sashes and the mode of their opening.
The price of a window also includes the number of double-glazed windows, since more or less glass is consumed. The gas with which the double-glazed windows are filled also affects the cost. In addition, along with the window, you can order blinds and mosquito nets, for which you will have to pay extra, and the cost will increase depending on the width of the window sill and the presence of ebb tides.
Advice. If you have never encountered the installation of windows, and do not know which window to choose, aluminum or plastic, and how to glaze the loggia correctly, then it is better to get advice from a specialist in this matter or even resort to their services when glazing.
Advice. If you are able to install a window on the loggia yourself, then try to negotiate with the manufacturer - if all the requirements for window installation are met, the manufacturer usually gives a guarantee for the operation of the profiles and glass, and therefore the entire window.
How to tell if porcelain tiles are glazed
How to tell if porcelain tiles are glazed or not
Porcelain tile is a man-made material that is used for both floors and walls in homes and offices. It comes in glazed and unglazed formats, but the difference does not affect the overall structural integrity of the material, only the color and style of the surface. The surface quality determines where you install certain types of porcelain.
Unglazed porcelain
Porcelain tile is another form of ceramic, but porcelain is created from finer clays and becomes a much harder substance when fired. In the unglazed format, the porcelain tile surface is smooth to the touch but porous in nature, meaning it will absorb stains and liquids over time. If you rub your finger over unglazed ceramic tiles, they will feel a little rough, like very fine sandpaper or dried play-dough.
Glazed porcelain
Glazing is a hard coating that covers porcelain tiles in a polished form. There are many colors and patterns to choose from. Glazed porcelain tiles are non-porous and do not absorb water. They are more useful for wall coverings than flooring as glazing is too slippery for use on commercial floors.
Gloss test
Glazed porcelain tiles have a polished and smooth surface that feels like glass when you rub it with your finger. However, older installations covered in dirt and grime make it difficult to tell whether the tile is glazed or not. Once you have cleaned the tile, you can immediately tell whether it is glazed or not if it has a polished, smooth surface.
Visual inspection
If you are working with new tile, you can easily tell whether the porcelain tile is glazed or not by looking at the side or underside of the tile. The glazing only partially covers the edge of the tile, and the bottom of the tile is a completely different color than the glaze on top. Unglazed tiles are entirely one color and are therefore solid.
How to glaze a loggia yourself
The desire of modern man to expand his living space at any cost gives rise to more and more new technologies and types of work in the world of the construction industry. So, today you can win a few centimeters of personal space by increasing your loggia. This can be done by glazing the auxiliary area (loggia), by moving its window sill slightly beyond the parapet line. This way you will get a fairly comfortable, wide and functional window sill on the loggia, which can easily play the role of a desktop. And high-quality glazing of the resulting space, in turn, will give your apartment more sunlight and visually expand the room.
Glazed loggia with extension
If you have a desire to carry out this type of work, then below we will present you with step-by-step instructions, thanks to which you can cope with the matter at the highest level. However, you cannot do this type of repair work without the help of a partner.

When is approval for balcony glazing necessary?
There are a number of cases in which obtaining a permit is mandatory, these include:
The most interesting thing in judicial practice, when they try to legalize an illegally glazed balcony, the court does not always make the same decisions, appealing to different regulatory provisions.
Therefore, today, companies that install glazing on balconies and provide a guarantee for their work are guided by the rule that an increase in the balcony/loggia by less than 300 mm can be done without approval.
In all other cases, including the removal of a balcony on the ground floor, you must have permission in hand before planning to arrange additional space.
However, you need to know how to obtain permission in all other cases.

Insulation of a glazed loggia
If you want to use the future loggia as a work or other functional space, then it is best to insulate it. This can be done both outside and inside. Foam plastic, glass wool or other available material can serve as insulation. As is the case with the insulation of plasterboard walls indoors, thermal insulation material is laid between the parapet wall itself and its sheathing. The insulation itself can be secured using self-tapping screws. Then we sheathe the perimeter of the loggia with any desired material.
Glazing of the loggia with removal. Stages of work
- First of all, it is necessary to make all the necessary measurements. You should clearly determine the distance of the window sill (it should not exceed 50 cm) beyond the line of the loggia parapet.
- According to what is desired, it is necessary to select metal corners of the appropriate size and firmly attach them to the parapet of the loggia at a distance of 30-40 cm from each other at a right angle to it. The supporting frame must be fastened using construction anchors and a screwdriver.
Installation of brackets and welding of metal frame
- Secondly, you need to remove the roof of the future loggia by installing metal profiles to the concrete ceiling. They should protrude beyond the expected ebb of the loggia by 10-15 cm. The profiles are attached, like the corners (brackets), at a distance of 40-50 cm from each other. We weld a transverse metal beam across the mounted profiles, which will subsequently hold the double-glazed windows. This way we get a kind of frame for the upper part of the loggia.
- Do not forget to check the evenness of the mounted structure using a building level.
- The next step is to weld a metal profile on top of the attached corners (across), which will form a kind of lower frame for holding the double-glazed windows.
- Outside the loggia parapet, you need to weld a metal box according to its perimeter, which will subsequently be lined with plastic or other material.
Balcony insulation.
Balcony glazing alone is not enough if the balcony is considered as a place to relax, sleep or a full-fledged room. It is necessary to take a number of measures to ensure that the balcony is warm, for example, installing heated floors on the floor, making insulation throughout the entire internal area of the balcony.
Balcony insulation process
Information on how to insulate a balcony can be found on specialized forums, websites, books and magazines. There are a variety of insulation materials on sale to suit any budget. But it is best to entrust this work to professionals.
Glazing of the loggia
Double-glazed windows can now be installed on the resulting frame. Ideally, there will be aluminum structures, since they are relatively light in weight, easy to install and have improved performance properties.
We install the windows into the resulting window opening and fasten them securely using a screwdriver and self-tapping screws. Carefully fill all possible holes and cracks with polyurethane foam.
The windows sit for a couple of days, after which you can begin finishing the loggia itself.
To do this, the remains of the polyurethane foam are cut off, a window sill is installed, and the slopes are sheathed with plastic or plasterboard.
Once all the dirty work has been completed, you can begin finishing the interior and exterior of the loggia with plastic or any other material.
We attach the canopy or roof to the resulting frame on top. Ideally, a profiled sheet is suitable here, which is mounted quite easily and lasts a long time.
Tools required for glazing
To fully carry out repair and construction work on glazing a loggia with removal, you will need the following list of tools and building materials:
- Metal corners that will serve as the main load-bearing brackets.
- Metal profiles for assembling the required durable structure (frame).
- Roulette;
- Fastening anchors for reliable installation of metal slats and brackets.
- Bulgarian.
- Welding machine.
- Cordless drill-driver;
- Building level.
- Anti-corrosion solution for metal processing.
- Paint to give a metal frame an aesthetic appearance.
- Insulation.
- Plastic for interior and exterior decoration of loggias.
- Profiled sheet for mounting the visor.
- Polyurethane foam.
- And the double-glazed windows themselves with low tide and window sill are included.

How to glaze a balcony correctly?
There are many ways to make a balcony or loggia more comfortable. Often, developers already offer houses with fully glazed loggias, however, apartment owners do not always have such conditions, and they have to glaze these areas themselves. There is plenty to choose from: glazing can be cold or warm, the frame can be wooden, plastic, aluminum or completely absent.
Cold glazing of balconies and loggias - what is it and how much does it cost?
Today, such a service as glazing of loggias and balconies is becoming increasingly popular among the population. The most popular option is cold glazing . Why is this term used and what does it mean?
What glazing material to choose?
In every city there are quite a lot of companies offering glazing services for balconies and loggias or manufacturing windows for these purposes. The buyer may have difficulty making a choice, since each material differs in physical properties, price, service life, and other indicators.
Before glazing a balcony or loggia, you need to decide how the glazed space will be used. If you do not need an insulated extension of the room, which will expand the living space, there is no point in overpaying and installing warm glazing. In order to dry clothes, smoke or use the balcony in the summer, you can use a cold type of glazing. But if you plan to turn the balcony into an office or warm storage, you will have to choose an insulated frame.

Ban on glazing
The reasons why a glazing permit may be refused are specified in Art. 27 Residential Complex of the Russian Federation
Based on the article of the Housing Code, we can conclude that refusal is possible in the following cases:
The refusal is drawn up and registered in the BTI, of which the person who submitted the application is notified within three days.
Work on removing the balcony along the slab can only begin after the design has been completed successfully, and not at the stage of wandering through the authorities. Otherwise (if permission is not obtained before the start of construction work), the removal of the balcony or extension will be considered illegal. And unauthorized construction is subject to demolition (with some exceptions) by the owner himself or by executive services.
The consequences of unauthorized reorganization are spelled out in Art. 29 of the Housing Code of the Russian Federation and Art. 222 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation “Unauthorized construction”.
Upon completion of all work, it is necessary, in accordance with Art. 29 of the Housing Code of the Russian Federation, draw up an act of the acceptance committee. The certificate is drawn up in two copies, one of which remains in the hands of the property owner and serves as confirmation of the legality of the actions performed.
Note. Even if you obtain permission, you should remember that you cannot place central heating radiators on the balcony or create a warm water floor connected to the central line, so the heating issue also needs to be resolved separately.
What types of double-glazed windows are there?
Whatever profile material you decide to glaze your balcony with, you will have to choose a double-glazed window. They are also different: how thick the double-glazed window is will determine whether the room will really be quiet and warm.
Warm and cold windows differ in chambers. In a warm double-glazed window they are filled with gas. It prevents glass from fogging and prevents air from the street from entering the room. This allows you to make the room warmer in winter and cooler in summer. If the loggia will be rarely used, you can get by with a single-chamber cold double-glazed window. The difference is that such glazing does not retain heat well, and in winter it will not be much warmer on the balcony than on the street.
Glazing of the loggia with metal-plastic
Cold glazing also includes frameless structures. They are made entirely of glass and have no frame. Glazing a balcony (or loggia) in this way is interesting from a design point of view, but it is not airtight, so it can only partially protect from winds and precipitation. It is useless against cold and noise.
If you want to glaze a balcony or loggia so that they become an extension of the living space, you need to choose warm glazing. For suspended structures, you cannot use double-glazed windows that are too heavy, so you will have to limit yourself to a two- or three-chamber double-glazed window. A larger number of chambers will better insulate heat and make the room quiet, but the weight of the double-glazed window will become noticeably larger. Double-glazed windows are quite enough if you do not live in the northern regions of the country, where frosts can be especially severe.
If you want to make additional sound insulation and save significantly on heating, then it makes sense to install winter double-glazed windows. Their fundamental difference from conventional types is that the chambers are filled with gas having a high density. The gas is reliably isolated and cannot escape from the sealed structure. This type of glazing is well suited for those apartments whose windows overlook the highway or a noisy courtyard.
Before glazing your loggia, find out the maximum load it can withstand. Glass units that are too heavy can lead to structural collapse and serious legal consequences.
There are various ways to strengthen the slab and increase its ability to withstand heavy weight, but in this case the possibilities of the balcony are also not limitless.

How to obtain permission for glazing?
The entire procedure for obtaining permission, as well as possible grounds for refusal, are regulated by Articles 26-29 of the RF Housing Code.
What you need to consider when glazing a balcony with a remote:
Note. If the expansion of the balcony leads to the appearance of gaps, cracks in the walls, residential and non-residential premises, or a decrease in clearance, then the court will oblige the defects to be eliminated and the balcony to be dismantled.

Which system should you choose?
Based on the opening method, there are swing and sliding systems for glazing a balcony or loggia. They can be either framed or frameless. The type of construction affects the comfort of using windows; sometimes there is nowhere to open a swing model or an original design solution is needed. Let us consider the selected types of structures in more detail.
Classic casement window for a balcony
This type of construction is considered the most common; it is used both for all types of premises and for glazing balconies. This opening mechanism is familiar to most people and is the easiest to arrange. It is reliable in operation, lasts a long time, rarely breaks, and is capable of providing the most airtight closing of windows.
Hinged windows can open in a vertical or horizontal plane, depending on the availability of space and the desire of the owner. Often the design has a window or a winter ventilation function. In this case, the window does not open completely, but forms a small gap. The sashes can sag during long-term use, especially for those windows whose dimensions are too large. To prevent this from happening, the hinges need to be tightened regularly, and it is advisable to purchase a reinforced structure itself.
Sliding structures for loggias
Glazing a loggia using a variety of sliding structures takes second place in popularity. This type of glazing can be either warm or cold, depending on whether a frame will be installed or not. The opening of the mechanism occurs by moving the sash to the side. This process is controlled by a special guide. It is important that the windows are installed perfectly level, otherwise they will not open easily.
The joints of the structure can be sealed. It is especially convenient for small rooms where there is no room for a swing door, and for some reason you do not want to open it towards the street. Sliding structures weigh quite a lot. To reduce their weight and make windows cheaper, aluminum profiles are often used. It reduces the weight of the balcony glazing, makes it resistant to corrosion, but also has a significant drawback: such frames do not insulate heat well.
Most often, a sliding structure is used with single-chamber double-glazed windows. It is most profitable to use it if it does not matter to you whether it will be warm on the balcony or not.
Double glazing – TheGreenAge
What is double glazing?
All houses lose heat through windows. Installing energy efficient double glazing is an effective way to reduce your energy bills and keep your home warmer and quieter.
Double glazed windows use two sheets of glass with a gap between them to create an insulating barrier, while triple glazed windows use three sheets of glass. Both options can provide high levels of energy efficiency; this is not the case when you need to use triple glazing to get the most energy efficient window.
The space between the glass panels can be filled with either a vacuum (quite rare nowadays as a perfect seal is required, otherwise the vacuum is reduced, so efficiency is reduced) or a heavy inert gas such as argon, krypton or xenon. Both of these methods attempt to create a more effective insulating barrier, scientifically known as increasing the R-value (which is a measure of thermal resistance).
Energy efficient double glazed windows are available in a variety of frame materials (including uPVC and more traditional wood) and styles. These windows vary in their energy efficiency, depending on how well they keep heat out of the window, how much sunlight passes through the glass, and how much air can leak through in or out through a window.
Some manufacturers of double glazing windows and doors helpfully use a window energy rating scheme to show the energy efficiency of their product. This is similar to what you may have seen on appliances such as a refrigerator or washing machine. Class A windows are the most efficient. To check the energy efficiency of a window before purchasing, look at its energy label.
Questions to ask yourself before investing in double glazing:
How energy efficient are windows?
When choosing replacement double glazing, you can check their energy efficiency by looking at the Energy Saving Trust Recommended logo and the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) energy efficiency label. The higher the energy rating, the more energy efficient it is. The Energy Savings Foundation approves any windows with a rating of B or higher. Unfortunately, window manufacturers are currently not required to label their products; however, by choosing a highly rated window, you know that you will be purchasing the most effective ones.
A list of all types of double glazed and triple glazed windows, along with their frame material and energy rating, can be found on the BFRC website.
How many layers of glass is best?
Double glazing consists of two layers of glass with a gap of about 16mm between them. There is also a triple glazing option, which has three layers of glass. Double and triple glazed Class A windows are available.
Which glass is better?
The most energy efficient glass for double glazing is Low-E glass. This is often an inconspicuous coating of metal oxide, usually on one of the interior panels - near the gap. It lets sunlight and heat in, but reduces the amount of heat that can escape again.
What's between the panels?
Very efficient windows may use gases such as argon, xenon or krypton in the gap or vacuum between two sheets of glass.
What separates the panels?
All double glazed windows have spacers on the inside edges to separate the two panes. For a more efficient window, look for spacers that contain little or no metal—often called “warm edge” spacers.
The BFRC Window Energy Efficiency Rating Scheme tests all components to ensure the final window meets its stated energy efficiency standard. This means you just need to look at the AG rating and remember that A is best! Alternatively, simply look for the Energy Saving Trust Recommended logo, which can only be found on glazing rated B or above.
Which frame is right for your home?
The frame you choose will depend on your home and your personal taste. Windows are available in every energy class for all frame materials.
Do you need ventilation?
Because the replacement glass units will be more airtight than the original glass units, your home may experience condensation due to insufficient ventilation.
If background ventilation in a room is insufficient, some replacement windows will have vents built into the frame that allow a small amount of controlled ventilation.
Sometimes condensation can form on the outside of new low-e glazing. This is because low-E glass reflects heat back into the home, leaving the exterior glass cool and condensation likely to form in cold weather—you don't have to worry about that.
Advantages of installing double glazed windows
Lower energy bills : Replacing all your single glazed windows with energy efficient double glazed windows could save you around £135 a year on your energy bills.
Smaller carbon footprint : By using less fuel, you will produce less carbon dioxide (CO2), which contributes to global warming.
A more comfortable home : Energy-efficient glazing reduces heat loss through windows and means fewer drafts and cold spots.
Peace and quiet : Energy-efficient windows not only retain heat, but also insulate your home from unwanted outside noise.
Reduced condensation : Energy-efficient glazing reduces the formation of condensation on the inside of windows.
The cost and savings of double glazing will vary for each home and each window, depending on the size, material and installer. Savings will also vary depending on how much you currently pay for heating oil; these savings are based on a home with gas heating.
Installation of double-glazed windows
When planning an installation, you will need to know building regulations, what to do if double glazing is not suitable for your property, and how to care for your windows. When you are thinking about replacing the glazing, you will need to ensure that your windows are installed correctly and comply with all relevant standards
Building regulations
Building Regulations in England and Wales require that new and replacement windows meet certain energy efficiency requirements:
New and replacement windows in existing homes in England and Wales must have a minimum WER Band C or U value of 1.6 In Scotland there must be a minimum WER Band C or U value of 1.6 In Northern Ireland there must be a minimum WER Band E or U value 2.0 or center panel U value 1.2.
However, if you live in a conservation area, have an Article Four designation on your property or have a listed building, additional rules are likely to apply. Always check with your local planning office before undertaking any work. The Clause 4 direction removes permitted development rights, meaning you will need to apply for planning permission before replacing any windows. This is often used in protected areas.
How to follow the rules
To ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, there are certain rules for installing windows:
Find registered installers
FENSA guarantees that its installers and frames comply with building regulations. To find a registered FENSA installer, visit the FENSA website.
Certass is another scheme that registers and approves installers. To find a registered Certass installer, visit the Certass website.
Ask your installer when you will receive a certificate upon completion indicating that the installation was completed to building regulations.
Other Options to Improve the Energy Efficiency of Your Windows
If you cannot install double glazed windows (eg if you live in a conservation area or in a listed building) you have other options:
Heavy curtains
Curtains lined with a heavy material can reduce heat loss from a room through a window at night and reduce drafts. They will save some energy, but should only be used as a short-term measure.
Secondary glazing
Secondary glazing is the installation of secondary glass and frame within an existing window opening. This is likely to be less effective than replacing windows as the units tend not to be as well sealed, however it is significantly cheaper than double glazing. Low emissivity glass is available for secondary glazing which improves performance.

The Energy Saving Trust approves of any windows with a rating of B or higher.
Glazing or glazing of a balcony
for example, in the case of a loggia, which is a niche in the wall and only goes out on one side, I would say “glazing”. in the case of a balcony, which is a protrusion from the main structure, it makes sense to say “glazing” to draw attention to the fact that frames are placed not only in front, but also on the sides - so to speak, all-round defense.
I did not try to make a substantive analogy. You need to pay attention to the semantics of prefixes. agree that “to block” is on one side, and “to protect” is from several.
Application of frameless glazing
It is worth glazing the balcony frameless, if you want to achieve a spectacular look, you have the funds for it, and you do not plan to use the structure in winter. The main disadvantage of this type of glazing is that it is not able to retain heat, therefore, even if you install heating devices on the balcony, you will only be wasting your money.
The advantages of this design include the following:
The last point, however, also has some disadvantages. The design is completely transparent, which provides a good view not only for you. The problem can only be solved by tinting the windows, which will reduce their light transmittance. It is impossible to secure anything to such glazing, so you won’t be able to use curtains or a mosquito net either.
You can glaze the loggia in this way if you use the room quite rarely, and it serves you for drying clothes or other purposes that do not require arranging a warm room.
If you have small children living with you, it is better to equip the windows with special locks that the child cannot open. Such devices can be placed on a window of any design: it will protect your baby from accidental falls from a height.
Double glazing versus secondary glazing
What is double glazing?
Double glazed windows use two sheets of glass with a gap between them to create an insulating barrier. The gap may be filled with a heavy inert gas such as argon or a vacuum; They both slow down the movement of heat from one side of the window to the other.
What is secondary glazing?
Secondary glazing is the installation of additional glazing on the inside of an existing double glazed unit. It can be permanent, although secondary glazing panels are often added as a temporary measure.
Double-glazed windows are more expensive than secondary ones
Double glazing is significantly more expensive than secondary glazing. The reason is that if you decide to install double glazing, you will need completely new elements - you can't just replace the second sheet of glass with single glass.
For double glazing windows to be effective thermal barriers, the gap between the panes must be sealed and filled with an inert gas (or vacuum). Therefore, for each window you want to use double glazing on, a company will need to come to your home, measure and fabricate windows especially for you.
Secondary glazing is much cheaper - you can buy DIY kits or have installers install additional glazing on the inside of your existing window frame.
Secondary glazing can be done with your own hands; double glazing needs a professional!
As mentioned above, the double glazed windows need to be custom made for your home, however once they are built (when I installed them they took about 6 weeks to make) the installer can install about 3 windows. per day. So the process is relatively quick, however this is certainly not a DIY project.
Installing secondary glazing can be a DIY project, however there are companies that can come and install secondary glazing for you. In comparison, since you don't have to remove any window units to install secondary glazing, the installation process is much simpler.
What type of glazing best minimizes heat loss?
One of the main reasons to replace your existing windows with double glazing or secondary glazing is to improve the energy efficiency of your home, which helps reduce your energy bills. You'll be happy to hear that both double glazing and secondary glazing do a wonderful job here. However, double glazing is approximately twice as effective as secondary glazing at preventing heat from escaping from the home. If you swapped all the single glazed windows in an average three-bedroom house, you'd save around £150 a year on heating costs. Adding secondary glazing to existing single glazing will save you around £75 per year. PVC double glazing should last 20 years or more, so the payback is relatively slow, but you will get it eventually!
Secondary glazing provides better sound insulation
Both types of windows also do a great job of reducing noise pollution, but it's secondary glazing that takes the winner's medal here. Unlike double glazing, the two different pieces of glass in secondary glazing act as independent barriers to noise transmission. The larger the cavity between the two panes, the better the damping effect - so double glazing, which has panes relatively close together, is less effective at eliminating noise.
Planning permission and double glazing = problems!
A pair of tiny secondary glazing bugbears!
I live on a busy road in my flat so I installed secondary glazing in the bedroom facing the road and double glazing in the rest of the flat.
There are two small problems I have with my secondary glazing, firstly they are difficult to clean because unlike double glazing where you just clean inside and out, you actually have to clean 4 sides of the glass but reach out and clean glass that is difficult to get back into the cavity!
Secondly, my single glazed window is a casement window and the secondary glazing slides out of the way (which is probably why cleaning it is so annoying). This means they are a little more difficult to open than double glazing.
Ecoease secondary glazing
About 6 months ago we also came across Ecoease - these are easily removable secondary glazing panels made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is a recyclable plastic. This type of secondary glazing is becoming increasingly popular because it is easy to install, helps prevent condensation, is cheaper than double glazing and is easy to remove (so you can remove it in the summer and put it back in place in the winter). ).
In the video below James shows us how Ecoease is installed

So which is better - secondary glazing or double glazing?
I have both types in my apartment and they both work very well - it has definitely made a difference in my heating bills since I installed them all. My bedroom is almost completely soundproofed from the noisy road outside, and the uPVC windows I installed have really tidied up what was there before. You may be forced to install secondary glazing if you live in a listed property, but both types of glazing work fine with their task, so I wholeheartedly recommend them both!
