Causes and ways to eliminate freezing of wooden windows
Korovin Sergey Dmitrievich Master of Architecture, graduated from Samara State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering. 11 years of experience in design and construction.
Frosty patterns on the windows are very beautiful. But not everyone knows about the reasons for their appearance. This happens because wooden windows freeze. In fact, this is a serious problem that requires elimination for a comfortable life. There are several different reasons why window structures can freeze. But before you begin to solve the problem, you should determine its root cause.
How to treat car windows to prevent them from freezing in the morning
If you come to your car in the morning and see that the windows on both sides are frozen, then the action plan is this: you need to turn on the engine and heater and the issue will be resolved - the windows in the car are freezing. In the meantime, you need to get out of the car and apply an antifreeze liquid to the outside ice, but since it costs money, it is better to make a solution of vodka and water in a 2:1 ratio and the effect will be the same, because the basis of any glass cleaning product is alcohol and you can safely save money when the issue is resolved: car windows freeze, how to solve it?
After applying a vodka solution using a spray bottle, the glass will begin to quickly thaw, but you can speed up the process with a scraper and quickly resolve the issue of why car windows freeze. In the meantime, the ice on the glass inside the cabin will have time to melt thanks to the stove. After these simple steps, you can safely drive with clean windows and forget about the question: why do car windows freeze.

Freezing of car windows - what to do to prevent the windows from freezing?
Hello, dear motorists! From the very beginning, we will not lie and admit that freezing car windows is not such a common occurrence. Fogging of car windows, especially in rainy weather, yes, this happens in almost every car.
But freezing of car windows is a natural phenomenon, characteristic only for winter operation, and occurs for certain reasons.
We hope that there is no need to explain to the driver for a long time that the phenomenon of freezing car windows is directly related to the safety of both your personal safety and the safety of other road users.
Actually, that’s why the questions: the reasons for freezing of windows in a car, how to prevent glass from freezing in a car and what anti-freezing agents to use should be given a few minutes of your precious attention. Either for information or for the practical application of acquired knowledge.
Freezing car windows - there is only one reason
The one and only natural reason for car windows to freeze is high humidity in the cabin. In combination with low air temperature outside the car, this leads first to fogging of the windows, and then to their freezing.
There is simply no point in describing the physical causes of air condensation and freezing of car windows. But practical advice on how to minimize fogging and freezing of car windows will be more useful to novice drivers.
For information, it should be noted that the process of glass freezing depends on the car windows themselves.
What does it mean? The fact is that regular glass (Stalinite) is installed on production cars. And there are also athermal glasses.
Stalinite glasses have high thermal conductivity, so they condense moisture on themselves faster and more.
Athermal glass, on the contrary, has low thermal conductivity, and, accordingly, low temperature outside does not lead to such intense moisture condensation as with stalinite glass.
How to reduce humidity in the cabin in winter
The increase in air humidity in the cabin depends on us: drivers and passengers. And, naturally, it is up to us to reduce the factors that increase air humidity. Namely:
- When driving in rainy or cold weather, by default there should be forced air circulation in the cabin. In winter, naturally, warm, and in rain, cool or warm, it depends on your preferences. The airflow should be directed to the windshield and side windows.
- When boarding the cabin, you should try to bring as little snow as possible on your feet and clothes.
- During winter use, it is recommended to use textile mats. Rubber mats collect moisture in the form of puddles underfoot, while textile mats absorb it.
- If you have climate control in your car, then the problem of freezing car windows will be solved automatically, without your participation.
- In the morning, after starting the car, let the interior warm up, smoke a little outside, and use a scraper to remove snow or frost from the outside of the windows that has formed during the frosty night.
Solving the problem of poor sealing
To prevent wooden windows from freezing in winter, it is worth performing high-quality sealing of the window structure. One of the methods is to remove a quarter of the window block, sashes and frame. To eliminate the appearance of possible cracks, additional platbands are attached to the sashes.
Removing a quarter of the window block reliably seals the structure
If the method described above does not suit you for some reason, you can use another one - glass fastening caulk. The method involves removing the old putty and using new one. You can also replace old beads using silicone sealant. This method is only suitable for old wooden windows, but for modern ones with double-glazed windows it is worth looking for other ways to solve the problem.
For old products, caulking is carried out in the areas of the narthex where the window block and sashes touch
It is important to ensure a tight fit of the strips to the window frame. You can use elastic materials
The work algorithm is as follows:
- Remove old trims.
- The contact points between the window block and the wall are caulked using polyurethane foam or tow.
- The platbands are put in their original places. You can use both old and new ones.
- A special wallpaper tape or construction tape is glued between the sashes on the inside.
Caulking the window block and installing platbands prevents the entry of cold, but also impairs ventilation
The result is a completely blocked access of cold air in and warm air out. However, it should be understood that this method reduces natural ventilation.
In what places does the problem most often occur?
As a rule, freezing of window blocks is observed in one or several places, depending on the nature of the structural defect :
- Assembly seam. If the gap is unevenly filled with foam, thermal inhomogeneity may occur, which leads to local freezing of the window around the perimeter.
Slopes.
This problem occurs when the installation seam is filled incorrectly. And also with insufficient energy efficiency of the outer wall itself.Also, slopes often begin to freeze along the plane of the walls and lintels if the location of the window profile does not coincide with the dew point formation zone.
- Window sill board. Freezing occurs if the element is too wide to ensure normal convection of warm air. The second problem is the loose connection of the window sill board to the end of the window opening.
- Double-glazed window. Such problems occur when a glass unit delaminates, which causes cold air to enter the chambers between the translucent elements. Also, freezing can occur when water gets into the space between the window profile and the double-glazed window - from under the beading.
- Movable sash. Most often, cold air enters the room if the trunnions are not set to winter mode, or the swing-out structure is left in the open position for too long.
- In severe frosts, experts do not recommend opening window sashes without prior preparation, which can cause the elastic polymer seal to rupture.
- For wooden windows – a shrinkage crack in the profile.
Natural materials have a heterogeneous structure, which can cause their uneven deformation over time. With seasonal temperature fluctuations, as well as with the combined influence of a humid environment and ultraviolet radiation, through cracks may appear in the profile, which will affect the thermal uniformity of the entire structure. - For wooden windows - gaps between different structural elements. The reason for blowing and, as a consequence, freezing of window blocks, also lies in the drying of the material and its change in volume.
- For aluminum structures, the metal has increased thermal conductivity. If there is no thermal break in the profile chambers made of composite or plastic inserts, regardless of the presence of internal insulation, the profile is a cold bridge.
Note. Thus, the most expensive, but at the same time vulnerable to freezing, are wooden window blocks.
To prevent most problems, many manufacturers use penetrating polymer compounds, which provides them with increased resistance to weathering, but at the same time reduces their environmental friendliness.
How to get rid of ice?
If ice does form, it must be properly disposed of. This is done as follows:
- Use a plastic scraper to carefully remove ice formations. It is not recommended to use scrapers made of other materials, as this will scratch the glass.
- Next, use a paper towel or dry rag to remove the remaining moisture.
To remove ice and snow from window glass, it is better to use a special plastic scraper
Some tips will help alleviate the problem until it is completely eliminated. Firstly, during the daytime you should try to ventilate the room every four hours for an average of ten minutes. Secondly, at night you can place a towel at the bottom of the window frame. It will absorb condensation that forms at night.
There is no need to seal the outer frames, as this will lead to freezing of the window structures. It is best to lubricate the glass with a special solution on both sides. You should also try to maintain temperature and humidity at normal levels.
So, if wooden or plastic windows freeze, the root cause should be eliminated. Also make sure that the installation of windows is professional from the very beginning. This will significantly reduce the likelihood of windows freezing.
General recommendations
At any temperature in winter, even with values approaching zero, it is necessary to use non-freezing liquid. What kind of remedy is this? Antifreeze liquid, or windshield washer, is a substance whose purpose is to clean glass in sub-zero air conditions. A similar composition can be used at temperatures not lower than minus 50 degrees.
To tidy up your winter windows, you should follow the following main stages of work:
- cleaning glass from ice, frost, heavy dirt;
- washing window sills and frames;
- processing glass with special compounds, drying the surface;
- applying an anti-freeze substance to windows.
If the car windows freeze.
When going out to our car in the morning in winter, many of us have encountered such a situation as a very frozen windshield. As a rule, we expect to leave the house and, after warming up the car a little, hit the road. But, unfortunately, we often lose a lot of time in order to melt the ice that has formed on the windshield. Often, in order to completely clear the glass of ice, we lose a lot of time. Today we offer you a simple method that will help protect your windshield from the formation of large amounts of ice.
When the customers themselves are to blame
The desire to save on such complex and important structures, which are plastic windows, does not lead to anything good. One of the likely consequences of purchasing economy class models is the appearance of ice. It can be caused by:
- thin single-chamber double-glazed windows
- such models are not suitable for use in our climatic conditions, since in extreme cold they instantly cool down on the inside; - poor-quality fittings
- this leads to depressurization around the perimeter of the active sash and blowing; - A 3-chamber PVC profile without reinforcement
- it itself has the lowest energy efficiency and is an additional “cold bridge”, and can also be deformed in cold weather, which will automatically lead to the windows blowing out.
It is also important to know that freezing occurs most often in rooms with high humidity levels. That is, for ice to appear, condensation must first form, and then the process progresses, and the window structure gradually becomes overgrown with ice
Why do plastic windows let the cold in: the main reasons
If the windows are leaking, this indicates a worn-out plastic structure or a manufacturing defect. Any problem can be eliminated; first, the cause of its occurrence is identified. The solution method and costs depend on it.
The main reasons for freezing of plastic windows:
- poorly executed window design;
- making errors in installation;
- wear of insulation;
- breakdown of fittings;
- the formation of cracks in the slopes and between the window sill and the window;
- dropped hinges.
If a problem arises, it is recommended to call a specialist from the company that manufactured and installed the double-glazed windows. Services will be free if the warranty has not expired.
Depending on the region, you need to choose suitable window designs. Available to order:
- single-chamber;
- two-chamber;
- three-chamber.
Accordingly, the warmer the region, the fewer cameras will need to be installed. If in a northern city there is an apartment with single-chamber double-glazed windows, then the room will always be cold. A frozen window causes the temperature in the room to drop.
You can deal with most of the problems that arise on your own if you have basic knowledge about the device. You will also need to stock up on special tools. Otherwise, you should not skimp and call a specialist to the site.
Detergents
The hardware departments of supermarkets are replete with an assortment of cleaning products, among which you can find what is most suitable for a particular case.
There are several options for going greener.
Adding 9% vinegar in the amount of 2 tablespoons per 1 liter of liquid. The resulting mixture is convenient to distribute using a spray bottle.
Spray detergent
Add 1 tbsp starch. spoon, but it is possible to increase the cleaning properties of the solution if you add a little alcohol, vinegar, and then add water to 4 liters.
The most ancient method of peeling is considered to be rubbing with a cut of a potato.
A common component of ready-made solutions is ammonia. The substance copes well with the nicotine residue formed when smoking through a window. A glass of ammonia is dissolved in 10 liters of water.
Keeps glass clean for a long time by forming a protective film, glycerin. For application, prepare a small amount of emulsion: 50 g of water, 100 g of glycerin, a couple of drops of ammonia.
Never mix ammonia with bleach or baking soda, as the components will react with each other chemically, and strong stains will remain after cleaning.
Some housewives add grated laundry soap.
It happens that over time the glass somehow turns yellow. It is possible to return them to their former state if they are washed with blue dissolved water.
More detailed options for preparing home remedies are shown in the following video:
So that the windows sparkle and do not freeze in winter
So that the windows sparkle and do not freeze in winter.
Everyone knows that windows must be clean. However, not everyone knows that dirty window glass blocks up to 50% of light. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended to wash them at least twice a year (spring and autumn), and wipe them when they become dusty, about once a month. To wash windows, choose a clear, dry day, preferably without wind - if the glass dries too quickly, rainbow stains may form on them.
Of the products on sale for washing and cleaning window glass, the most popular are preparations in convenient aerosol packaging “Secunda-75” and “Secunda-UV”, blue liquids “Nithknol” and “Nithinol-1”. No less effective, but less common are the liquid products “Aknol”, “BLO”, “Bystry” and “Svet-1”. If you come across them, do not neglect them, as well as the relatively new liquid preparation “IPS”.
Aerosols give the glass antistatic properties and, accordingly, the ability to “repel” dust. “Aknol”, “Nithinol-1” and “Svet-1” can also be used for washing frames and window sills, although special products such as “Pearls” are produced for this purpose and almost any washing powder is suitable (a tablespoon per 1 liter of water). Soap and especially soda are contraindicated here. When using them, the surface coated with oil paint loses its shine and quickly collapses. For the same reason, you should avoid hot water (above 50 °C). Hot water leaves stains and streaks on glass. Be sure to rinse windows washed with warm water with cold water.
The old, “conservative” methods of washing windows have not been canceled either.
Older housewives remain faithful to powdered chalk and tooth powder that have stood the test of time as glass cleaners. The composition, prepared from 2-3 tablespoons of chalk or tooth powder and a glass of water, is applied to glass wiped with a damp cloth, allowed to dry and washed with a dry soft cloth or newsprint. In a similar way, use a paste of tooth powder diluted with a weak solution of ammonia. In this case, the glass acquires a special shine.
Many housewives prefer ammonia, solutions of which (a teaspoon per 1 liter of water) are universal - they wash glass, frames, and window sills equally well. Heavily soiled glasses are first washed with warm soapy water, and then clean, to which ammonia has been added. Dirt accumulated in the corners of the frames, if it is not washed out, is removed with a cloth or cotton wool wrapped on a stick. Glass wiped with newsprint has a crystal shine, and frames and window sills wiped with a dry soft cloth look as if they have been newly painted.
You can achieve a lasting shine on glass by adding starch (a tablespoon per 1 liter of cold water) or kerosene (a tablespoon per 3 liters of water) to the water for washing them. The smell of kerosene will also repel flies from the windows.
The glass will sparkle if you wipe it with a woolen rag soaked in linseed oil and wipe it thoroughly with newsprint.
To obtain a beautiful greenish tint, wipe clean glass with a solution of copper sulfate (a teaspoon of sulfate per 1 liter of water).
Windows are also washed with warm water and vinegar (2 tablespoons per 1 liter of water). Using a swab moistened with vinegar, remove cloudy deposits from the glass, after which they are washed with water and wiped in a circular motion with newsprint.
When closing pre-washed windows for the winter, they are usually insulated. The window sashes are pulled up and tightly closed, the internal frames are sealed with foam rubber strips, and covered with strips of paper or adhesive tape. Glasses with salt are placed between the summer and winter frames: reducing the air humidity in this space prevents the formation of frost on the glass and their icing.
Glass will not fog up and freeze if you rub it on the inside of the window (you can do it on both sides) with a mixture of 1 part glycerin and 10 parts denatured alcohol and wipe it with flannel or suede. A mixture of the same purpose contains 3 parts glycerin, 1 part turpentine and 5 parts liquid transparent soap. In extreme cases, you can do without soap, even just glycerin, but then the glass must be lubricated on both sides.
However, on cold winter days you suddenly find that the windows are frozen. It is likely that the sealing was insufficient and other measures were not taken.
Do not scrape the ice off the glass, wipe it several times with a thick cloth and salt, or rinse with cold salt water (2 tablespoons of salt per glass of water). The ice will thaw quickly, rinse it off with clean water and wipe the glass and window sills with a dry cloth.
If you have an electric fan, direct a stream of air from it from a distance of about 1 m onto the frozen glass. Place rags on the windowsill, close to the frame, to collect water. The rags will have to be wrung out several times, but the entire operation to remove the ice will not last long.
Wipe windows that are prone to fogging regularly with a clean, soft cloth. It would be good to moisten it with the mixture of glycerin and denatured alcohol mentioned above.
Make sure that water from the windows does not flow down and damage the window sill. You can build a kind of moisture collector. Stretch a medium-thick string along the frame at the bottom of the glass and attach it to the frame with small nails or pins. Lower the loose ends of the lace into cups standing on the windowsill. Drain them from time to time.
Finally, you have the opportunity to resort to the help of household chemicals. “Auto-Defogger-1” in aerosol packaging will prevent fogging of the glass of not only your car, but also your windows. And the liquid “Auto-glass cleaner-2” will allow you to clean both car and window glass at low temperatures (down to -27 ° C). To wash car windows and windows in the cold season, you can use Obzor windshield washer anti-icing liquid.
How to clean windows in winter, step-by-step tips
First you need to prepare everything you need for cleaning, namely cleaning products and equipment.
Instead of ordinary water, in sub-zero weather, use the “anti-freeze” known to motorists - it will easily remove contaminants and will not create difficulties.
You can wash windows from the outside in winter when it’s frosty in several simple steps:
- Clean glass and surfaces from ice and frost.
- Remove dirt and dust from the surface.
- Wash window sills, frames and fittings.
- Don't forget about the cornice - it is an integral part of the external window.
- Dry all window parts to avoid frost formation.
If we consider this issue in detail, then you need to wash the windows from the top, gradually going down. It is best to remove ice carefully so as not to scratch the glass or frames. It is best to work with rubber or waterproof gloves. Gloves are necessary not only to protect hands from chemicals, but also as protection against chapping and the formation of annoying “chicks” on delicate women’s hands.
If you dissolve 10 tablespoons of table salt in one liter of water, then with this solution it will be very easy to remove ice. This composition can be used to treat all elements of the window opening for prevention, and then wipe dry. At the same time, you can forget about mechanical removal using knives and hammers forever.
Cold from plastic windows: how to solve the problem yourself (step-by-step instructions)
Before you can fix the problem, you need to determine where the cold air is coming from.
There are several ways:
- Run your palm along the entire perimeter of the glass unit. This method is not always effective, since the wind changes the air flow, which misleads the apartment owner.
- Light a match or piece of paper. The place where the fire begins to move is problematic. It is recommended to examine the entire window, as there is a possibility that it is letting in cold in several places.
- Open the window, insert a sheet of paper between the frame and the transom, close it. If you can easily move the sheet across the width of the frame, then the problem lies in the seal.
Malfunction of the clamping mechanism causes the plastic structure to freeze. It causes depressurization of the valves. You can fix it yourself.
To do this, you should have the necessary tool at hand - a 4 mm hex key:
- Open the window. Find hexagonal parts similar to nuts on the inside of the transom.
- Tighten the fittings clockwise using a wrench or pliers.
- Close the window, evaluate the quality of the work, and repeat the procedure if necessary.
Air from inside enters the room due to untwisted hinges. An assessment is made to identify where the window is freezing and the hinges are tightened. If they are located on the left side, tighten counterclockwise. From the right - clockwise.
If the window is leaking air due to a worn seal, it needs to be replaced. If the window is under warranty, contact the company that performed the installation. Otherwise, replace it yourself:
- open the window;
- remove the bead;
- remove the camera with glass and gasket;
- carefully remove the seal;
- lay a new one.
- for effectiveness, they are fixed with glue;
- install the remaining parts in place.
If plastic windows allow cold to pass through, the culprit may be poor-quality installation of slopes. Glades and cracks contribute to the appearance of drafts and lower the temperature in the room.
Insulation of slopes:
- Remove the plastic box, if any.
- Remove the old layer of plaster, cut off the foam as much as possible.
- Fill the space with polyurethane foam sealant.
- After drying, cut off excess.
- If cracks are noticed, fill with simple sealant.
- Plaster with a thin layer.
- Prime.
- Cut the insulation according to the shape of the slope.
- Attach with mounting adhesive and dowels.
- Install a plastic slope.
After this procedure, the room will become warmer, even in severe frosts. Foam plastic, mineral wool, and penoplex are used as insulation.
Reasons for freezing windows
Therefore, one of the reasons for poor indoor air ventilation is excessive sealing of a certain area. This occurs due to the fact that in winter many housewives seal the windows in the house so tightly that the air humidity increases and ice appears on the windows. The second popular reason that moisture and ice appear on windows in winter is the fact that modern double-glazed windows are completely sealed.
Therefore, the practice of solving this problem shows that most often plastic windows fog up. Thus, condensation on plastic windows occurs when there is high humidity in the room, and when it is also cold enough, then such windows freeze. As a result, it should be said that if excess moisture does not accumulate in the room, and the rooms are heated at the proper level, then ice will definitely not appear on the windows in the house.
General information
Not so long ago, only wooden windows were installed in houses and apartments, which had a lot of disadvantages - they dried out in the summer, and on the contrary, they swelled in the winter. They had to be painted regularly, removing the old paint, and covered with paper for the winter. Of course, modern double-glazed windows, regardless of the material from which the frames are made, be it PVC profile or wood, are of much higher quality. However, they are also not completely free from problems associated with freezing and fogging of glass. Often such incidents occur as a result of violations of the manufacturing or installation technology of double-glazed windows. In this case, they can remain moist in both cold and warm seasons. However, it should be borne in mind that a small amount of condensation does not mean that the product is defective. You should pay attention to the problem if water flows from the windows in the literal sense of the word, and a layer of ice appears on the inside of the sashes.
Condensation on the window
How to fight
The presence of condensation on windows is not only unsightly, but also uncomfortable. Moisture significantly impairs visibility, can damage parquet or laminate flooring if it constantly drips onto the floor, and owners will have to constantly wipe the glass. In addition, high air humidity can cause mold or mildew to appear.
Before you start to deal with the problem on your own, it is worth checking whether the case is covered by warranty. The latter include:
- The appearance of moisture inside the glass unit, that is, depressurization. If there is no external damage to the structure, this is a manufacturer’s defect; replacement is made under warranty on the spot. Usually, the problem can be noticed only some time after installing the double-glazed window.
- Incorrect installation of the structure (incorrect flow or incorrect sash geometry), due to which the entire window is blown out and condensation appears inside. A complete window replacement will be required.
- Poor quality installation: installation seams are not made correctly, blowing occurs along the edges of the frame. Fixed by partial or complete reinstallation.
It is advisable to contact the manufacturer and correct the problem.
How to clean a double-glazed window from the inside
Before you figure out how to eliminate condensation inside a double-glazed window yourself, you should think carefully. Experts strongly do not recommend doing this yourself. Cleaning involves disassembling the window, after which the warranty on the entire structure is void. In addition, the window can be accidentally dropped. It is best to observe where the moisture is coming from and call a specialist.
However, it is still possible to clean the inside of the window. To do this, you will need a powerful, fairly large magnet, a sponge, a metal core, and ammonia.
The procedure is carried out in several steps:
A metal core is inserted into the sponge and secured properly so that it does not fall out.
Use a chisel or plug to pry up the side or bottom bead (the bar that holds the glass) and carefully bend the glass.
The sponge is dipped in ammonia, applied to the glass from the inside and moved with a magnet.
When everything is cleaned, carefully remove the sponge and put the glass back in place.
Experts warn that this is not the most practical option. After installing the glass, the structure will significantly lose its energy-saving properties. It is impossible to dry the air inside at home, meaning condensation will constantly form. It will not be possible to replace the glass unit under warranty.
In addition, if the metal core falls out of the sponge, it will no longer be possible to get it out. You'll have to disassemble the entire window.
Fighting condensation indoors
If moisture appears on the glass inside the room, but the double-glazed window is installed correctly, the reason is most likely a poor microclimate. This can be fixed using some tips:
- It is necessary to regularly ventilate the room, for example, open the glass to micro-ventilation mode so that there are no drafts.
- Ensure the optimal temperature inside the room: in winter it should be at least +18-20 degrees.
- Remove sources of high humidity from the windowsill: flowers, aquarium.
- Warm up the glass from the inside if the batteries fail. To do this, you can place several burning candles on the windowsill or turn on additional heating by directing a stream of warm air onto the glass.
- Implement an optimal air exchange system: for example, remove heavy curtains and blinds and replace them with light, ventilated ones.
- On some double-glazed windows you can set a specific mode for winter and summer. It is necessary to change them.
- Use air drying systems.
- If the window sills are too wide and the warm air from the radiator does not reach the glass, it is better to change them to narrower ones.
There are also folk remedies: apply a “mesh” to the window with dry soap, then wipe it with a dry cloth. You can also place a bag of salt or a special absorbent on the window so that excess moisture is absorbed. However, it is worth remembering that their absorption capacity is low.

What is condensate and its types
Condensation is steam that accumulates on various surfaces and transforms into droplets of water or other liquid. Condensation forms due to the temperature difference between inside and outside the room or due to high humidity.
If the air temperature remains high at any time of the day, for example in summer, condensation will be almost unnoticeable. In autumn, drops of moisture settle on surfaces mainly at night, but in winter this phenomenon can be noticed at any time.
Thus, two types of condensate can be distinguished according to the time of year:
- Demi-seasonal, appearing only at night;
- Winter, formed at any time of the day.
In addition, condensation differs according to the type of surface on which it forms:
- On glass;
- On the walls and ceiling;
- On the roof visor.
In winter, condensation on the glass turns into ice, which is why window sashes systems often fail.
But moisture on the walls or ceiling of the balcony can lead to the appearance of mold and mildew, which can also become a huge problem. Each of these types of condensation appears for different reasons, and accordingly, they need to be dealt with in different ways.
The main ways to overcome “winter” problems
To understand how to wash windows in winter, you should follow certain recommendations. First of all, you need to take care of your own comfort, eliminating possible troubles. To do this, take any household or waterproof vinyl gloves, then your hands will not freeze in the cold, and the skin of your hands will retain its beauty.
Ice frozen on windows is first removed mechanically. When cleaning such an opening, it is not recommended to use an excessive amount of liquid, so as not to provoke freezing of the cleaned surface. Excess moisture must be removed quickly.
Use rubber gloves

What other problems might arise?
Many owners try to insulate window structures before the start of the heating season. This leads to another problem - their fogging. If there was no such problem before doing the insulation yourself, it means that natural ventilation was disrupted during the repair process.
You can prevent windows from fogging up in a more modern way - by gluing a special film. Most often, a specialist is called for this, who performs the work quickly and efficiently. But if you wish, you can paste the film yourself; there are no difficulties in this work. It should be remembered that the film will prevent fogging only at temperatures outside the window down to minus 20 degrees. The product may have additional functions, for example, energy saving or protection from sunlight.
A special film protects the window from fogging
Many experts advise using a solution of glycerin and alcohol in a ratio of 1:10 to prevent windows from freezing. First, the glass is wiped with a solution and then wiped dry.
High humidity and condensation lead to the formation of mold. It should be gotten rid of immediately, since mold is one of the most powerful allergens. It can have a negative impact on the health of household members, especially children. This happens because mold releases spores, causing allergic reactions.
First, the affected areas of the structure are treated with a bleach solution. There are also special chemicals that remove mold.
Particular attention is paid to the corners. Additionally, you can treat them using a hair dryer, performing heat treatment
To prevent the recurrence of mold, the corners are treated with ultraviolet light using special irradiators.
Industrial products for window dampness
For those who do not want to bother with preparing compounds that protect windows from dampness and prefer to buy a ready-made product, we can recommend special aerosols and pastes. All of them fully correspond to their purpose. The main thing is to apply the product to clean glass, following the dosage and manufacturer’s recommendations.
Industrial anti-foggers have a specially developed formula, thanks to which they form a protective film for a long time. Safe composition and careful treatment of the surface of the glass unit are the main advantages of these household products.
Inexpensive but effective anti-fog agents:
- Grass ANTIFOG,
- Goodyear aerosol,
- FILL INN FL111,
- paste "PS-1",
- domestic products “Transparent”, “Bullfinch”, “Lilo”, etc.
The PS-1 paste, intended for processing organic and silicate glass, contains, in addition to other alcohol-containing substances, glycerin. To get rid of excess moisture on the window glass and prevent fogging, you need to apply a little paste to a sponge, rub it over the glass surface and polish until shiny.
You can check the result of the work by breathing on the surface treated with the paste. If the glass does not fog up, it means the desired result has been achieved. Otherwise, the processing will have to be repeated.
All the methods discussed above for dealing with foggy windows only mask the problem without eliminating its cause. To get rid of condensation forever, you need to adjust the ventilation in the house, check the tightness of the window structure and adjust the fittings.
Recommendations for further care against freezing and fogging
You can avoid freezing of plastic windows on the balcony if only two conditions are met: reducing air humidity and increasing temperature. To do this, you can equip a “warm floor” system on the balcony, and also provide for the location of autonomous heating.
Special air dehumidifiers that can be installed directly on the windowsill in areas of greatest condensation accumulation also work well.
In case of technical malfunctions of the double-glazed window, it is advisable to call a specialist. Problems with fittings or insufficient window sealing are quickly resolved. The last resort is to replace the entire glass unit, which will also help prevent glass from fogging up.
This is especially important for equipment that has already expired.
Preventive actions:
- Try to ventilate the room more often, do not allow air to stagnate, especially when drying clothes.
- Monitor air humidity, use special dehumidifiers if necessary.
- Insulate the room to prevent windows from freezing.
- Ensure good ventilation indoors.
If your windows on your loggia or balcony are constantly freezing, it is important to correctly determine the cause of this phenomenon and eliminate it. Constant accumulation of moisture is fraught with the destruction of wooden and metal elements and the spread of fungus on the interior decoration of the room
What will help if the windows of a loggia or balcony freeze, as well as the main methods of preventing such phenomena are described in detail in the information provided.
Prevention of wet windows
To prevent windows from fogging up, it is necessary to take a number of preventive measures.
- Eliminate the wide window sill, replacing it with a narrow analogue.
- Install a through ventilation valve under the window sill.
- Remove greenery and flowers from the window opening or from the room.
- Increase the room temperature or increase the number of heating radiator sections.
- To prevent freezing of the room, insulate the walls of the house outside.
- Move massive furniture away from the windows and remove the blinds so as not to cut off warm air flows from reaching the glass.
- When living in a private house or on the first floor of a high-rise building, systematically check and clean the basement, since this place is the main source of dampness.
- Do micro-ventilation regularly when the room humidity is high.
Important! It is better to provide ventilation all year round, since air circulation at low temperatures outside will improve health and normalize the microclimate in the house.
Improving air circulation in the room, removing excess moisture with anti-grease preparations, and properly washing surfaces will help solve the problem of foggy windows. With proper processing, the glass will remain clean and transparent for a long time, and moderate humidity and comfort will be established in the house.
How to prevent condensation
You can prevent fogging and subsequent freezing of windows by increasing the air temperature on the balcony and ensuring ventilation of the room.
There are several ways to make it warm. First, install windows with two- or three-chamber double-glazed windows. The presence of several air layers in it significantly softens the temperature difference between the street and the room. The inner glass in such structures is warm enough, which does not allow condensation to accumulate on it and freeze. And on the balcony itself the air temperature will be much higher than in the case of single-chamber PVC structures.

Secondly, you can insulate the walls, floor and ceiling of the room. Insulation based on mineral wool and extruded polystyrene foam are suitable. They are usually sheathed with plywood or plasterboard, and then a finishing material is laid.

Thirdly, an electric heated floor or a heater placed on the balcony can serve well.
As for ventilation, it can also be organized in various ways. This may include periodic ventilation of the premises by opening windows. Most often, it is enough to set them to micro-ventilation mode. And if there is poor air circulation in the house, you can install forced supply ventilation. It is a compact device that provides air movement using a rotating fan.
Troubleshooting
Having found out exactly why the windows on the balcony fog up and freeze, you can begin to eliminate the problem. The most effective result is achieved after applying all the necessary measures.
Fogging
There are several basic measures to correct the fogging situation:
- insulation and heating of the room;
- correct choice and proper installation;
- eliminating dampness;
- solving a ventilation problem;
- some additional measures.
If the balcony or loggia room is not insulated, then you should start with this. If insulation work has already been done, you should pay attention to installing additional heating for the balcony, while simultaneously reducing the overall air humidity.
You can use different types of heaters on a balcony or loggia. When choosing a stationary version of the device, you should give preference to a model with a thermostat in order to be able to maintain a constant temperature level.
Heating a loggia is much simpler and easier if the loggia is insulated with polystyrene foam, or better yet, with penoplex. These materials hermetically seal all the cracks through which heat could escape or cold penetrate.
The heater does not require special maintenance or special installation. But it will occupy a certain space. In this case, you can equip the balcony with an additional heating radiator. If the finishing work on the interior of the balcony has not yet been completed, you can install an electric heated floor. In this case, it is advisable to use heating mats.
Heating a loggia or balcony using a convector
As for the correct choice of a plastic window, then, as already written above, single-chamber double-glazed windows are the wrong choice. Heat conservation without condensation is only possible if double-chamber windows are installed. If the climate is too harsh, it is better to opt for three-chamber options.
When choosing a particular plastic glazing, the following factors must be taken into account:
- loggia size;
- heating method;
- amount of glazed area;
- Windows exit to the north or south.
Installation of plastic windows should only be carried out by experienced specialists. Non-professionals can leave gaps between the window frame and the window opening. If any measures taken do not produce results, you should request that the problems be corrected at the expense of the enterprise.
Dampness that penetrates onto a balcony or loggia from the outside is one of the main sources of high humidity. All walls and roofing of the balcony must be carefully inspected for leaks. On the upper floors, the likelihood of rainwater or melted snow flowing in is especially high. If leaks are found, they are eliminated using a special sealant. Instead of sealant, you can use a cement solution to which liquid glass has been added.
High-quality ventilation of the room is one of the conditions for combating the problem of fogging of windows on the loggia and balcony. However, a small balcony space does not have the ability to install mechanical ventilation. The latter is provided naturally - by opening windows. Read how to make ventilation on the balcony here.
In winter, not many people have the desire to open windows in winter. However, this is the only way to remove stale air from the room, which has accumulated a certain amount of moisture. It is enough to ventilate the balcony for only ten to fifteen minutes in the morning and evening. But you shouldn’t get too carried away either, since a sharp drop in temperature will lead to an effect opposite to expectations.
Getting rid of condensation
Plastic windows
We have found out the reasons why condensation occurs. Based on this, we will now consider what to do to prevent windows from freezing in winter. It should be said right away that you should not delay solving the problem, since moisture will gradually destroy the window.
If time is lost, only qualified craftsmen whose specialization is replacing and repairing plastic windows can correct the situation. Moreover, if the warranty period has expired, then it will cost a decent amount of money.
Radiator reflective screen
So, if the windows in your house freeze, you need to do the following:
It makes more sense to start from simple to complex. Therefore, first of all, you need to check the ventilation draft
Perhaps the problem can be solved by installing ventilation grilles with large passage openings.
If you were unable to improve traction on your own, you can turn to housing office representatives for help.
If everything is in order with ventilation, then you should pay attention to the integrity of the rubber seals. Perhaps there is damage somewhere or dirt has gotten on them, which has broken the seal.
It is not uncommon for plastic windows to freeze due to a lack of access to warm air.
First of all, you need to remove the curtains from the window sill or make sure that they are not adjacent to it. This way, the heat from the batteries can dry out the condensation that has formed.
Grating on the window sill Sometimes special window sills with bars are used for these purposes. You can install such elements with your own hands in an existing window sill. To do this, you need to purchase them at a hardware store and cut holes of the required size.
- Another solution to the problem is to increase the heat output, for example, by installing a reflective screen behind the radiators.
- Sometimes owners of plastic windows, having tried all the options, do not know what to do to prevent their windows from freezing. And the reason lies only in the excessive number of flower pots on the windowsills. After watering them, some of the moisture condenses on the glass.
- Finally, you need to make sure that the room temperature does not fall below 18 degrees Celsius, as this can also cause condensation to form and further freeze the glass.
It must be said that all of the above actions apply not only to plastic double-glazed windows, but also to so-called Euro-windows made of wood. If these instructions did not help, then all that remains is to seek help from the specialists who installed the windows, since there is a high probability of violation of the installation technology on their part.
Insulation for windows
Causes of ice formation
Why do the windows on our balcony freeze - factors and root causes of this phenomenon:
- Due to the large temperature difference between indoors and outdoors. As a result, moisture accumulates in the form of droplets.
- High indoor humidity. A living example of this is a boiling kettle or a pot of water in the kitchen. The steam coming out of them and condensing on the surface of the glass will certainly turn into ice overnight.
- Defects in the manufacture of double-glazed windows. In which air currents (drafts), penetrating into and out of the house, will cause frequent fogging and freezing.
- The glass unit is too wide in the absence of a split system in the room, which monitors and adjusts the humidity level in the house.
- Complete lack of ventilation of the room.
- A single window will definitely freeze. And heating the balcony with double zeal will not help here; you need to install double-glazed windows where the number of cameras will be large.
- A wide window sill can also cause the window to freeze. The warm air coming from the battery simply does not reach it.
- Frequent opening of the balcony doors leads to the fact that warm air from the apartment, entering the colder room of the balcony, forms condensation, which accumulates on the window glass, then freezes, forming ice.
- Violation of the tightness (sealing rubber bands) even on very high-quality double-glazed windows can cause freezing.
- Lack of ventilation. Systematic air circulation also has its effect, even if it is not long enough, it will reduce the risk of freezing.
- Unscrupulous installation of a double-glazed window is a 100% guarantee that the window will constantly fog up and freeze on a winter night, especially before the morning.
Moisture always condenses on cool places or cold objects, since the window is usually colder than the surrounding objects, fogging and, as a result, freezing are guaranteed.
It turns out that the cause of window freezing is considered to be a violation of air convection. To eliminate the problem, you need to identify the cause and eliminate the effect of unwanted convection.
