What is lamination of plastic windows?
Lamination is the process of covering a plastic profile with a special decorative film. Occurs under the influence of special equipment, pressure and high temperatures. All this ensures tight adhesion of the lamination film to the profile, turning the product into a single whole.
Lamination film allows you to give the window profile the structure and appearance of wood of any species. A high-quality profile system and functional double-glazed windows provide good thermal insulation and effective noise insulation.
By choosing laminated plastic products instead of wooden ones, you get equally beautiful and functional windows, but at a better price.
Aesthetic protection
Thanks to the innovative SST technology (Solar Shield Technology), the new generation film RENOLIT EXOFOL more effectively reflects thermal solar radiation and reduces the formation of excess heat in the window profile. The multilayer structure of the film reliably protects the profile surface from mechanical and chemical influences. This increases the lifespan of the window and improves its overall energy efficiency.
When laminating profiles, we use two types of films:
- RENOLIT EXOFOL PX is an improved version that guarantees color durability and protects against negative climatic factors.
- RENOLIT EXOFOL FX is a solution developed for use in countries with hot, humid climates. In the conditions of central Russia, such lamination provides maximum protection against ultraviolet and thermal radiation.
What are plastic laminated windows made of?
The main elements that make up a laminated plastic window are PVC profiles, double-glazed windows and fittings. And you shouldn’t skimp on any of them!
Profiles of various manufacturers
A high-quality plastic profile will turn the window into reliable protection from all drafts and other weather vagaries, and even from the actions of intruders.
German manufacturers Rehau and KBE have profile options not only in different price categories, but also with different numbers of chambers and installation width, so that each customer can find the best plastic window option for their needs. There is also a more affordable domestic analogue - Novotex profiles, which have several options from which you can choose the best combination of quality and cost.
Functional double glazed windows
Double-glazed windows can also have additional properties.
Energy-saving double-glazed windows, thanks to the presence of low-emissivity glass, can significantly reduce heat loss in the cold season and save as much as possible on heating the room. This effect is achieved due to the ability of low-emissivity glass to reflect heat waves emanating from heated objects, preventing them from escaping into the external space. | A multifunctional double-glazed window has glass with a special coating that helps reflect heat waves into a space with a higher temperature. In winter this will be the inside of the house, and in summer it will be outside. Thus, the room will not be stuffy and will be pleasantly cool, which will save on air conditioning. | Sound-absorbing double-glazed windows have a special structure that helps reduce noise. Windows with such double-glazed windows are ideal for houses located in areas with high noise levels. Their presence creates an atmosphere of peace and quiet in the house, conducive to proper rest. | Armored double-glazed windows will help preserve not only the integrity of windows, but also property. They perfectly withstand both accidental and targeted impacts, so they will be an excellent alternative to gratings. |
High-quality fittings
Ensuring the long-term functioning of the opening sashes of a plastic window is the task of high-quality fittings. To ensure that the doors open well, do not jam or sag, you should choose fittings that are resistant to wear and high loads.
German Roto or Siegenia Aubi fittings will perfectly cope with the tasks assigned to them. It is resistant to wear, has high interchangeability of parts and has a 10-year warranty.
Lamination: varieties
There are several varieties of such products. Here is a detailed description of several representatives of the group.
One way windows
Lamination is performed on only one side of the structure. The second part remains white. Or the buyer can choose plastic with any type of surface. On the outside, the product looks natural, but on the inside, modern materials are used that are sufficiently durable.
Single-sided laminated windows, but with painted outside
There are practically no differences from the previous type. The only difference is that in the analogue the inside is painted, but here only the outside is painted. This is relevant if you need to achieve an excellent combination between different options and design styles.
Double lamination
The designs are more expensive than the previous options, but the design is present on each side. The coatings can be the same on all sides, or different on each. The customer can design an individual manufacturing option, according to his personal preferences.
Colored product options
The plastic is not textured. It is smooth, but rarely painted white. Cream or brown shades are most often preferred. The end part is always devoid of texture; it can be added to the rest of the details. From a distance, the product looks like it is made of natural wood.
The most expensive windows are those that are completely finished in wood. This is due to the fact that the manufacturing process is quite complicated. And the external design should be as attractive as possible. The design becomes visually seamless. The appearance is not spoiled by individual parts that look clearly plastic. Wood-look plastic windows combine the advantages of both materials.
If the customer lives in an apartment at a certain height, it is not necessary to order full lamination. From below, the difference between the parts of the structure will be almost invisible. And the facades of the building do not have a uniform design style. Citizens who own private houses should not save. Even one window frame chosen incorrectly will affect the entire structure of the house.
Types of lamination of plastic windows
There are several types of lamination, each of which increases the cost of a plastic window.
Single-sided lamination | Double-sided lamination | Bulk lamination |
One side, often the outer side, is covered with a colored film, the other remains white. The cost of the window increases by 35%. | The white profile is covered with colored film (of the same or different colors) on both sides, the ends remain white. | The most expensive type of factory lamination, it is used mainly to make plastic windows as similar as possible to wooden ones. In this case, a decorative film imitating wood is applied to the initially brown profile. |
Color palette of lamination film
The film for laminating window profiles can be plain or embody the structure of a material, such as wood. There are many options available: in addition to simple shades like blue, yellow and green, more exotic colors like moss green or dark oak are available.
When laminating profiles, we use high-quality films from RENOLIT. The outer side of the film is highly resistant to atmospheric factors, as well as ultraviolet radiation, so the coating does not lose color saturation for a long time.

* When calculating the cost of laminated plastic windows, we took into account a three-chamber Rehau Blitz PVC profile with lamination on one side, a two-chamber energy-saving double-glazed window and Roto fittings (made in Germany). ** The price is calculated taking into account the average volume discount. |
Stages of lamination of a PVC window profile
Stage 1. Priming the profile, which will allow the laminating film to hold tighter, without any unevenness or peeling.
Stage 2. After priming, the plastic is left to settle for 24 hours, then the profile blanks are transferred to a special chamber, where the PVC is heated to 125°C to apply the film.
Stage 3. Before application, the film is lubricated with an adhesive composition, which improves adhesion to the surface of the profile.
Stage 4. The laminated profile is passed through rollers, which act on the profile walls with different pressure forces. Thus, at this stage, the air trapped under the film is removed.
Stage 5. At the final stage, the profile is placed in the workshop for 2 weeks for storage and only after that the production of the window begins. The shelf life is explained by the fact that during this period the material shrinks and needs to “cool down”. Premature work with painted PVC can lead to changes in the shape of the coating.
The labor-intensive production process of colored laminated windows results in a high cost compared to conventional white PVC windows (by 20-25%) and increases production time.
The process of laminating a plastic window cannot be carried out independently in artisanal conditions. The entire process is automated and goes through special machines, devices and chambers where high temperatures and pressure forces are used, without taking into account the professionalism of specialists. If the technology is violated, the film may appear in waves or may not stick to the profile at all.
Combination of profiles and double-glazed windows
So, you have learned how to choose the right plastic windows
It would be useful to pay attention to the combination of profiles and double-glazed windows. Thus, a profile with three chambers and a double-glazed window with one chamber is a budget option that is used for windows with a glazed balcony, as well as for non-residential premises
A profile with three chambers and a double-glazed window with two chambers guarantee excellent sound insulation properties. If your house is well heated, then this is a completely suitable option.
Finally, a profile with five chambers and a double-glazed window and a two-chamber double-glazed window are the maximum degree of protection. If you live near a railway or airfield, this option is for you.
Thus, the choice of plastic windows largely depends on your place of residence, financial capabilities and taste preferences.
It is extremely important not to save on this purchase, since a good plastic window will serve you for decades. In this case, you do not have to repair it
